Outstanding sushi and great prices. The in house atmosphere is ok,but the food makes up for it! I have to admit I usually order take- out. FYI they are closed on Mondays.

This is very good Sushi for Northwest Illinois. I eat here at least once a week. Never been disappointed.

In a city of few good eats, this is a remarkable surprise. Specialty rolls are created with care and delicious!

I've been to Fuji twice: once in February, not too long after it opened, and once a few weeks ago. I am happy to report that they improved on the second try; however, the sushi is really still only 3 or 3.5 stars. But also...they're the only Japanese joint in the area, so there's that. Service is friendly and lunch specials are affordable, so give them your business! It may not have blown me away, but I'm still happy to see a sushi restaurant come to Freeport.

Totally better than what I expected. Although first of all, I gotta say that Fuji needs to do something about its curb appeal. It's barely visible from the street and half of the signage is missing from the storefront, making it look like it's been there for ten years and closed for maybe the last five. But inside it's all good. The environment is relatively small and nothing fancy, but it's clean and inviting. After considering some of the options off the menu for my take-out, I ended up ordering the 10-piece "salmon lover's" maki roll from the specials on the wall, and I definitely enjoyed it. Basically, it's salmon and avocado wrapped in rice and more salmon, and topped with roe, crunchy stuff, etc. I should've taken better notes, but I think that about covers it (I uploaded a picture if the description doesn't quite cut the mustard for you). On the regular menu, the ratio of cooked rolls to raw rolls is about 50/50, with the cooked options conveniently marked with a star (note to newbies: "sushi" by definition isn't raw...the name actually refers to the rice that's used). Some interesting choices that I might try another time are the Pizza Roll (despite its name) (spicy shrimp, eel, avocado, snow crab, and black tobiko) and the Naked Girl Roll (again, despite its name) (spicy tuna, fried banana, and eel). Aside from the rolls, they apparently also offer a few nigiri options, tempura dishes, and a selection of cooked-at-your-table hibachi dinners of chicken, steak, shrimp, scallops, lobster, and salmon (and vegetarian of course). I'm seeing some good lunch deals too (e.g., hibachi chicken w/ soup, rice, and veggies for $6; two rolls w/ soup for $8). I do plan to hit this place up again sit-down style the next time my girlfriend is in town.

Sushi in Freeport? To steal a phrase from Samuel Johnson, it is not done well, but you are surprised to find it done at all. Not that sushi can be done well if one insists on doing it well-done. Sushi, as everyone knows, is a dish best served cold. Cooked sushi is the exception; raw is the rule. Yet on Fuji's menu, raw is the relative rarity. Methinks that someone in the Stephenson County Health Department is deeply fearful of the whole concept of sushi and preemptively brought the hammer down (as hinted at by the food-borne illness warnings distributed ominously around the establishment, like Department of Homeland Security terrorism advisories at an airport); either that, or it simply isn't possible to obtain fresh enough fish in Freeport to make the effort worthwhile. In any event, when you combine Freeport and sushi, you get pretty much what you'd expect: disappointment. Spicy tuna rolls that aren't spicy, in which you can't taste the tuna. Lots of fried stuff. Weirdly naughty maki names. ("Sex in the Lobby"? The hell?) One is left to conclude that not everything that can be done, should be done, no matter how wishful the thinking. P.S. Chicken . . . in sushi? No. UPDATE, 5/27/11: I decided to give Fuji a second chance. There are a few new sushi items on the menu, including my go-to favorite, yellowtail-scallion rolls, so naturally I had to give those a try. I also tried a Crunchy Roll (cooked crab and tempura). Credit where it's due, the Crunchy Roll was good; the yellowtail-scallion roll, however, was cold. Not as in not cooked, not as in room temperature, but COLD cold, like it had just been taken out of the refrigerator. I couldn't taste a thing except the soy sauce I dipped it in. It might be OK if I ordered it to go and ate it 10 or 15 minutes later, but that's an experiment for another day. In the meantime, the two-star rating stands.

What a great surprise! Freeport, please support this restaurant! I visit family there monthly and ordered take-out on Sunday evening to check them out. The rolls totally blew me away. A lot of food for the money. Service was friendly and prompt. They have a BYOB policy, if you desire an adult beverage with your meal.
