Yay for Evanston's first brewery! I had the pleasure of meeting them at the Evanston Mashup earlier this year. My husband and sister attended the grand opening were they talked about the great space, grew brews and service. Looking forward to a great relationship - welcome to Evanston!

Evanston has just embarked into an epic change in the craft brewing scene and Temperance started it all. Josh thank you for opening up this great brewery and taproom. I know Josh (owner) and Claudia (headbrewer) and I know first hand the love and quality they put into their beers.

This place is awesome. The vibe, the beers, the decor are all spot on. Great music, lively atmosphere and perhaps the best patio around. As for the beer Gatecrasher is a solid IPA, Smittytown tart is top ten beers I've had, and I've had a lot of beer. Greenwood beach is gonna be my summer beer for sure. Gotta check this place out if you haven't!
(5)Dj H.
minimalist. no frills, no big screens, no large mirrored bar full of liquor bottles. the location and setting is way off the beaten path- much to my liking. parking was also wide open. my first experience was later on a wednesday eve. there was nearly no crowd, getting service was very easy. if you are interested in the beer, and only that, you should be pleased- because there isnt much beyond that. i only had the greenwood beach(blonde light ale) which was great. i will be back!
(4)Rob F.
Surprisingly nice tap room located in an industrial park. I liked the industrial type look to it. I was impressed with all of the beers that I tried. Had a food truck in the lot, not sure if that is always there -- otherwise no food just beer. Location makes it hard to find. Good place to get growlers to go.
(4)andy w.
Just the way a micro brew tap room should be. Great sunny fall day. The overhead doors were open do the entire tap room was an extension of the beer garden. Tried s ginger lemon rye ale shandy and a English bitter on Nitro. Both were spot on. I will return.

Such a great place! 1.) Let's talk about the location since it seems to be the biggest issue. As you're driving East down Dempster and you're getting closer to the location your gps is telling you to go to, you'll see the Goldfish swim school on your righthand side. There will be a sign for the swimming school, an antique store, and towards the bottom Temperance, but it's definitely easy to miss. Just make a right after the swim school into this little parking lot area. As you go a little further down the parking lot you'll see Temperance, you can't miss it. I know it sounds kinda weird, but when you get there you'll definitely be pleasantly surprised! 2.) The bar is so chill, and has such a great atmosphere. The staff is super friendly, and it just makes for such a casual experience. They don't have a full menu, instead they have snacks, and a pizza place from the area comes and has a little set up in front of the bar. Regardless of if you're sitting inside or outside, they'll come bring you the pizza when it's done. The pizzas are made to order and are very good. 3.) The beer selection is on point. My favorite is the chocolate stout. It's honestly one of the best stouts I've ever had. I did a flight of their other beers as well, and they were all great!
(5)Ann M.
Might be little hard to find in Evanston but once there, the Gatecrasher is so worth it!! Megan, the bartender super cool, her suggestions were winners and we even got a growler. Over all great beer and super friendly staff! Next time bring food so we can hang in the beer garden.
(5)lee m.
I've been here twice and I would give the beer 5 stars, the bartenders are a 2.5. These hipsters are to cool for school. The beer hall is modern and well kept. The glass wear is clean and proper based on style. As a Certified Cicerone I'm always on the look out for an informed bartender that is down to earth and excited to talk about the product in an enthusiastic way. These bearded guys have there nose in the air and not once engaged in any conversation about their beer or anything else for that matter.
(4)Chris H.
This must be what real beer halls/public houses used to feel like. Sure, it's not in a walking-friendly location, but it is easy to get to (gotta keep your eye peeled for the blue sign on the south side of Dempster). Friendly staff, comfortable and clean seating. Nice room. Can't wait to try the patio in fair weather. The fancy grilled cheese food truck was just pulling in as we left on a Saturday evening.
(5)Andy S.
The tap room is pretty cool. It is definitely in an odd location off Dempster but has a cool feel to it and I'm sure in the summer will be really fun with the patio they built. Good beer with a different food truck out front most nights. Nice job guys!
(5)Christina G.
This place was a bit difficult to find. It sure didn't help that Dempster is under construction. The sign was barely visible. Basically, it looks like you're turning into some sort of swimming school. Even knowing the brewery was hard to find (there's a warning and map on their website) we still passed it once before we found it. I was surprised the parking lot was pretty full when we arrived about 3:45 on a Saturday. Maybe it's because the parking lot is shared between the brewery, swim school, and an antiques shop, all of which have entrances off the lot. Oh well, we found a spot and headed inside. It was nice out, so the patio was open. We headed up to the bar, and I was really surprised that none of the bartenders came over to greet us. We looked at the beer menu for a couple minutes, and then a bartender did hand us a smaller menu. But, she didn't really say anything to us. She didn't ask us if we had been there before (we hadn't), or if we had any questions on the beer choices. I picked the Greenwood Beach, which was $7 for a pint. I was surprised - prices at breweries are usually a bit lower. The beer was good - perfect to sip on a hot summer day on the patio. I nursed it for a bit as we sat outside and looked around. That's when I noticed that there were a ton of kids there. Like, every couple except for us and a group of three women who appeared to have just come from yoga, had a kid. The website did say the brewery was kid friendly until 8:30pm, but I was surprised at just how many kids there were. One couple had a baby that had to be a month old. Kind of unusual. There were board games you could take from a shelf and play while there, and there was also a bags set outside. The kids seemed to be having a great time with the games. When I finished my beer, I ordered a half pint of the National Anthem. I didn't enjoy that one as well. My husband ordered a Smittytown Tart, and I didn't really care for that one either. So, 3 stars to reflect the OK beer and not too friendliness of the bartenders.
(3)Peter N.
A great local brewery in the Chicago-area. The beers were good and the venue is a lot of fun. I'd be a regular if I lived in the area.
(4)Gspot H.
Temperance is a great and exciting new addition to this area. Its like a hidden gem for Foodies, people good music taste and beer Connoisseurs worldwide. The bartenders and waitresses all delivered better the good service. Some of the workers have grown up in Evanston and Pride come through with a smile. I must Say that is GREAT 2 Finally Have a Brewery and one of this excellence in E-TOWN! There is bunch of parking, enough for large parties. Infact it would a great place to rent out for a Wedding or a Celebration. The Music is always on Point!. The Resident DJs; TeeBot & D. Harris serve up dishes as great at the appetizers there. I am definitely going back in a week or so.
(5)Lisa C.
Cleanest bathroom ever. Great atmosphere. And the beer is delicious to boot!
(5)Heidi L.
Having come directly from Ward Eight, which was fantastic, this was just okay. Very hard to find and not in a good hidden urban gem kind of way (I drove around the huge block a could of times so hey a sign would be helpful). I found the interior to be boring. I like simple but I felt like I was at a VFW or a bowling alley. Felt more like a campus hangout that way, even though that wasn't necessarily the crowd. I don't remember what I got to drink because I barely had any of it - the bartender might have given me the heads up that they were closing soon and maybe to get a smaller beer. On that note neither person behind the bar was super welcoming or engaging. The outside area is ok, overlooking the parking lot. But one thing to be clear - it's not a restaurant or brew pub. It's a place that makes and sells beer, and offers a couple of things to eat. We ordered some gourmet flavored nuts from the bartender and they came prepackaged and we were given a flimsy paper bowl kind of thing to put them in. Not fun, no presentation, just like a bowling alley. I think that's why it doesn't seem like a good place for kids. I bring mine everywhere but I wouldn't bring them here because they would hate it. If I'm bored surely they will be. A lot of people, by their reviews, seem to love this place, but I was underwhelmed. Nothing stood out to me as memorable and I don't think they really care.
(3)Karen C.
They aren't kidding when others say this joint is a little hidden...my friend and I rolled with it, and found our way. And let me tell you, the beer is worth the adventure. We arrived to discover they had a DJ spinning. I was not expecting that. It was a little loud, but having jams playing was nice. Instead of getting a flight, I just started ordering pints. Not a disappointment at all! Although next time I'm going to have to flight it up and try it all. Only downside...I got eaten alive by mosquitos. Boo.
(4)nick d.
Outstanding beer, friendly and helpful bartenders, reasonable prices, and a great atmosphere. Temperance even has board games. It is a great place to hang out with quiet music because you won't be shouting over any Pitbull singles here. Its a little tough to find. If google maps is telling you to turn down what looks like an alley, trust it. It is tucked away off the south side of the street on Dempster.
(5)Rick L.
My cousin took me here for beers during my visit to Chicago. This is a very laid back brewery with a great outside seating area. I did a flight of four beers and they were all quite good. The Nitro was amazing. The brewery is kind of hidden, don't fret, it's worth the search!
(4)Elizabeth D.
Great brews, fill outside growlers, and the bartenders have always been friendly. The location is a little hard-to-find the first time, though!
(4)Kate S.
I finally had the chance to check this place out on Friday. They were doing a benefit night for the Actor's Gym so I was able to get my circus-enthusiast friends to join me. For some stupid reason many of my friends don't like beer, so that's why I haven't been able to convince them to go sooner. Anyway, even they kind of liked their beer. I loved it. This was my first brewery experience so I'm not sure if this is standard or unique to Temperance, but I love that they have 4oz taster options for $2. I went ahead and did a half pint ($4) of their "when life gives you melons" pale variety, which was great. I fully intend to come back and try a 4oz of everything. One of my friends left with a growler for her boyfriend, and I plan to stock up on some of their swag. Their pint glasses are awesome. I would give them an extra star if I could for supporting the Actor's Gym. It was an awesome experience.
(5)Sara M.
5 stars for the beer 0 for the staff. So I'm going to round up to 3. The beers are exceptional. I especially liked the gatecrasher, really well done English IPA. The patio is nice and we had some of the nuts and popcorn while we sampled the beers. The staff is just plan unfriendly. I hate the attitude you sometimes run into at brewery's. Your NOT doing me a favor by pouring me a beer. Get over yourself and act like your in the customer service field. Because without customers you wouldn't have a job. It's one thing is the customer is being rude, be we were not. So as long as you can put up with the pretentious staff it's worth the trip. Oh and they don't have any "paddles" so good luck getting your beers to your table. They also don't give you a list of what you ordered so that's s negative unless you have a great memory you might want to bring a pen and paper.
(3)Erika G.
Evanston . . . steppin' up! Giant tap room with delicious beer. Beef jerky, popcorn and other snacks. My brother is usually sittin' at the bar, and frankly, that's a plus. Six packs and Growlers to go - and you get a discount on return fill ups with the Growler, so there's a beer value.
(4)Scott H.
Temperance really tries to be one of the big boys in the brewery game but falls a bit short. The beers don't change that often and they restrict growler purchases arbitrarily. Also, they need a regular $4 pint to help us poor folk. :) One of my beefs is the music. You get a choice - insipid new age "rock" or old school hip hop. Don't like either? Too bad. That's it. They have food trucks now and then and they're usually good quality at a premium price. The deck is really nice weather permitting but the lighting in their parking area blinds you at the bar. There is a projection TV but most views are blocked by the lights hanging in your way. I would advise the staff to visit Revolution's tap room to see how it's done although on a much larger scale of course.
(3)Jamie V.
This place was a fun day drinking location but infer their beer menu was heavy on the dark beers, which is fine...if that's what you're into. I prefer lighter beers, particularly wheats, saisons, etc and there wasn't much of that on tap during our visit: I did enjoy the atmosphere though--plenty of games available to play, including cards against humanity, which kept our group occupied for a couple hours. I'd love to come back here in the summer in hopes of trying greenwood beach.
(3)steve l.
Excellent beer, excellent ambiance, a bit hard to find. Do a flight because they have a wide range of beer styles and many are in the top tier.
(5)Virl S.
Good stuff. Stopped by here on a quiet Saturday afternoon. Sampled a few of their beers. I like their Gatecrasher IPA a lot. Vibe seemed very family friendly. Naturally very bright and clean inside, from the white walls. Entrance is a little tricky, as I had turned to early and again too late, since it's in more of an industrial area. Regardless, the beer was great and I look forward to returning
(5)Scott W.
Finally, a brewpub in Evanston! Temperance Beer Co. opened today in an industrial park of a space hidden behind a strip mall on Dempster. Lots of folk out to snag a sample of the first fresh beer in Evanston in forever. Its a great big open garage of a space. Glass garage doors. Communal tables. Painted brick on a wall. Wood paneling on another. Nice people behind the bar. Some really good and some fairly forget-able beers on tap. Six in total. Shirts and hats for sale. Food truck in the lot. Big deck waiting for warmer weather. This place has promise and will only get better. A good start. Check it out.

I just went 2 Temperance and bought 2 growlers. The lady behind the bar was very friendly and helpful . the man behind the bar must have stayed out too late last night. He has an expression that could stop a clock and the personality , as in no personality at all, to go with it. I handed him my card to pay . He took the card , ran it and threw it on the bar in of me without a word. I got the impression he didn't want to be bothered. How sad for a business trying to get going and having someone working with that kind of attitude . Oh well, there are several places to get good beer in the area. They obviously do not need the business.
(2)Scott H.
Temperance? I think not! Not in this little light-industrial corner of Evanston, at least! Temperance did a great job in blending the old and the new in their brewpub space. Industrial bones and new and modern bar and backbar space. I enjoyed their opening night with several good friends and have returned on quieter nights to soak in the vibe with just one or two companions. Several tasty initial offerings (Gatecrasher IPA being the clear frontrunner) give Temperance a promising start and hearing of their new canning operations I look forward to taking some of their beer on a summer road trip up North or to the Lake. Their huge outdoor space and encouragement to bring in outside food will certainly make this a must-stop once the weather warms up. Just can't wait!
(4)sara r.
Warm ambiance, great music played at the perfect volume, abundant parking, and DELICIOUS BEER! An instant Evanston classic.
(5)Sam J.
Brought some friends here and had the best time, playing board games and sampling the delicious beers. We liked almost all of the beer we tried, and the taproom is really comfortable and welcoming. Great way to spend a snowy night.
(5)John R.
Been coming here since their opening. Great beer and they have really began to find their style. Their flagships, one and dones, and seasonals are great. Rare flops (some randalls have been a no go...) but owners, bar staff and brewers are very welcoming and friendly. Even as a homebrewer with annoying questions they are cool. Music is good, atmosphere changes depending on the time of day, but this is to be expected in Evanston as it is a very family friendly/oriented city. Cannot beat a good beer, ordering a pizza or meal from your favorite local joint, and playing some board games or bags on the deck.
(4)Jamie A.
My friends and I went there this past Friday and the place was great! Beers were great! The only thing is... waaaay too many kids. It felt like I was hanging out at a day care center. I might return after 830 when it is 21 and over.
(3)Emily F.
5 stars for great beer, great staff & great atmosphere. My friends & I had planned to celebrate a birthday there and the staff was super accommodating. The place is kind of tucked away off the Main Street in Evanston but that makes it better because they have an awesome outdoor porch with plenty of seating and good lighting. I loved the Gatecrasher and the Threeway. I definitely recommend their beers and will certainly be back to try more.
(5)Kevin R.
Great place off the beaten path. It's great that you can bring your own food or order in pizza. All the beers I've tried have been amazing but I really enjoy the Root Down Porter and the Gatecrasher IPA. Bartenders are always attentive and engaging!
(5)Lauren S.
Great place, excellent beer, loved the outdoor patio and open garage feel. Also like how they offer some appetizers. Definitely will go back!
(5)Julia D.
An excellent addition to the Chicago craft brewing community. Claudia's beers are great, especially the Restless Years Rye and Root Down Porter. The bar staff are friendly and attentive, and the atmosphere is modern but comfortable. The porch is a great place to spend a sunny day as well.
(4)Sarah S.
After wanting to visit Temperance since their opening a few months ago, I finally got the chance this week. Temperance is one of the only breweries I've heard of with a female head brewer. Right on, sistah...we need more women who appreciate a good beer. Normally this brewery is only open Wednesday to Sunday but they were open this past Monday for a special IPA release party! They were unveiling their Threeway IPA which I really enjoyed, not too hoppy and quite smooth. Plus my friend won a limited edition poster - score! The music ranged from Beastie Boys to some kind of dance electronica so it's all kind of that vibe. The clientele ranged in age from people in their 20s to seniors. Actually quite a number of seniors were there. I actually much preferred the diversity in age as opposed to a bunch of college kids in there just to get drunk. Also a surprising lot of solo people there - I'm down with that. There were a lot of friendly people in there, as well. Someone sees you on Untappd and it opens up a slew of conversation! The entire tap room is full of long wooden communal tables. I love the wood paneling everywhere and having a tabletop Shuffleboard doesn't hurt the vibe. It looks like they have a decent space for a deck outside. I'm really hoping that means beers outside on the deck in the summer. That sounds like perfection. I have to be honest, none of their beers blew my mind but I definitely liked them all. I didn't have a bad beer. My favorite thing about Temperance is they offer 4 ozs tasting sizes of all their beers on tap for just $2-3! When I go to a new brewery, I want to try all of their offerings so the option to have 4 ozs was insanely appreciated by me. I think my favorite of the night was their Smittytown Tart which is fruity (Hey! I'm a girl, give me a break) and the Root Down, a very creditable porter. I also tried the Threeway IPA of course, the Freedive which was their only brew I had previously tasted and Restless Years. In addition to the five I tried, I believe their were 2 others on tap. Quite a respectable showing. It's BYOFood and most days has a food truck selling yummies to patrons. I was lucky enough to have Union Pizza on the night I went being passed out to the crowd. I'm not a big pizza fan but I was loving Union's pies! They don't yet offer tours but as soon as they do, I will absolutely be back. I still have a few more of their beers to try, as well. Seems like Gatecrasher is a crowd favorite so that will be my first sip when I return. I absolutely loved the vibe and atmosphere so will be back for sure. Cute, friendly bartenders never hurts either!
(4)Ndele S.
Temperance is great. I've been there many times and never been disappointed. They have an extensive beer list that is frequently updated with seasonal beers. I've been favoring the Escapist IPA recently but I've liked everything I've tried so far. The staff is fun and friendly and they play an eclectic selection of music that I found quite enjoyable. Their patio is a nice way to spend a summer evening with some friends. There are occasionally special events on Fridays too; I saw a lip synch competition last week that was very entertaining.
(5)Samantha E.
I may not have liked the beer all that much but almost everything at Temperance was kick ass. It is a bit out of the way but this keeps the freshly minted 21 year olds from Northwestern's campus away. That being said, it did not keep away local families. And when I say families, I mean the entire crew. There were babies in their mother's arms and children running around all over the place. Aren't there laws against this when it comes to bars? Anyway, the outdoor and indoor spaces are beautiful. So much wood and beautiful. They were a bit understaffed at the bar but we were able to get our drinks fast enough and claim a space away from children. I was meeting up with some friends who I had not seen in a while so Temperance was perfect for us to just sit back, relax, and have a few drinks. Plus, their pint glasses are lovely. $8 if you want one to take home.
(3)Rob D.
My friend recommended this brewery and I'm a huge fan! After bringing me a growler of the Greenwood Beach beer I was hooked. Great afternoon/evening spent at Temperance. Attentive bartenders and good vibes. Will definitely be back to try more than the Birdsong Saison and the Greenwood Beach! Thanks Temperance crew.
(5)Bran G.
If you're a beer nerd, going to Temperance is like dying and going to beer heaven. Everything in this tap room is bright, fresh, and to sum up in one word: immaculate. I went with a group on a Sunday at noon and after driving around for a bit, found a huge wooden deck and knew we were in the right spot. Temperance has two giant window garage doors opening up onto the deck so it gets great light but they can also open them up in nicer weather. The entire inside is hardwood and has a warm feel to it. Claudia (the brewer) was there and offered to give us a tour. She was great and you could tell so passionate about her brews. I was focusing on drinking so not sure I really understand where beer comes from but she was working on a stout with roasted coffee - the aromas were beergasmic. Now that beer that I was drinking instead of paying attention, that was their Root Down (a porter). That was my favorite. We all pretty much started with a flight (each beer ranging from $2-$4) so we could pick our poison multiple choice style. I'd recommend that option and you will find one you fall in love with. THE BEER IS WHY TEMPERANCE GETS 5 STARS. So delicious. They serve a few snacks: peanuts, popcorn, empanadas. Or they have menus for you to order delivery as we did. Apparently they used to have food trucks come from Chicago but due to licenses had to stop. I didn't mind no food, we ordered pizza, tacos, etc. and made it a feast. Other things I liked: really cool shirts and hats if you're into brewery swag, their glasses were all stamped with their logo, and just all the little things that had a nice touch One thing I didn't like: we asked for country music and got denied. whomp whomp.
(5)Angela C.
I came to Temperance on a weekday night. Though it was a bit cold to sit outside, the deck looked like an awesome place to hang out, and the clever woodwork helped conceal the fact that you're really in a long concrete parking lot (at least there's plenty of parking). The interior was industrial chic and had mostly communal tables (seated and standing) of varying lengths. The bar was large and took up one side of the room. On another side of the room was a shuffleboard and a view into the brewing facility. I tried Restless Years (Rye Pale Ale), Even Fall (Imperial Red Ale), Might Meets Right (Imperial Stout), and Freedive (India Black Ale) by ordering a "beer flight," which is really just paying the list price for four 4-oz pours. I thought Might Meets Right was the best of the group, even though I didn't like its strong coffee taste. Overall, I didn't care for any of Temperance's beers, so I'd only recommend Temperance to those who like beers with a more bitter bite. Pro tip: the best way to get to Temperance is to head east on Dempster and make a right turn into the driveway.

I love beer and I love breweries . It has been my goal for a while to try as many breweries in Illinois as I can. I've never had temperance but heard of them. We googled mapped this place, and got lost. It says it's on dempster but it's really on that side street by hartrey, off to the side in the middle of nowhere. The location sucks! The place however is not bad especially for a nice weather day! They have a nice outdoor patio. The inside is simple and clean. No TVs, not much food. They have a good variety of beers, my fave was GATECRUSHER! There is not that many seats and a lot of empty space they can improve that. Wish a food truck was there because I got pretty hungry. But deff a hidden gem, best for the summer.
(4)Allan M.
I can't remember what beer it was that was the first ever one I had from Temperance(I think Gatecrasher?), but after coming here, now I have a much better opinion of their beers. Still are more I wish I could've tried, but couldn't due to having to catch a Pace bus back to downtown Evanston. Anyway, I tried 4 beers(FYI, Evanston law only allows them to give out 4 beers at a time, if you're getting a beer flight). My favorite was definitely the Birdsong, followed by the Smittytown Tart(fall seasonal beer btw), Smittytown, then Restless Years. Feel I slightly misjudged this brewery a little negatively, by only trying Gatecrasher(which is a hoppy beer, and as I'm not wild about hoppy beers myself) at first. I'm still on the hunt for Greenwood Beach(mainly since a bartender at Church Street's brewpub in Itasca recommended it), and wouldn't mind if I can get a report of any liquor stores still having cans of it left this late in the year. Since I've unfortunately heard it's only a summer seasonal beer. Regardless if I find Greenwood at any liquor store or bar this late in 2014, I'm sure I'll be back here to try more beers soon enough. Also, the first driveway west of the alley behind all the back entrances of shops serving Evanston Plaza, is how to get to Temperance. When you see a lighted patio area at the back of that driveway on your right, that's where you enter. Public transit bus info: the Pace #250 Dempster bus is the last bus to run through the Dempster and Dodge area, and every night(even on Sunday, since this runs every day) there's an eastbound bus that arrives at Dodge at about 10:28pm, and a westbound bus arrives Dodge at 10:51pm. The CTA #93 Dodge/California is unfortunately only a Monday through Saturday route, with more limited hours sadly. The last weekday southbound #93 bus that hits Dempster arrives just after 9:51pm(the nearest timepoint on that schedule is Dodge/Emerson), and the last northbound bus hits Dempster slightly before 9:31pm(timepoint again is from Dodge/Emerson, north of Dempster). The #93 stops even earlier on Saturday sadly, with last northbound bus hitting Dodge/Emerson(nearest timepoint to Dempster) at 8:03pm(hits Dempster a few minutes before), and last southbound bus at 8:22pm(it hits Dempster a few minutes later). Pace #250 schedule(Monday-Sunday, 7 days a week): pacebus.com/pdf/schedule… CTA #93 schedule(Monday-Saturday, NO Sunday/holiday service. and it stops earlier than the #250): transitchicago.com/asset…

Loved it. I tried the Root Down Porter and it was amazing. They have a nice outdoor area for the summer and let you bring in your own food. They also have bike racks so you can lock up your bike while you enjoy a few beers. Ill definitely be back.
(5)Carolyn G.
Be careful or you can easily drive right by this place. It's set back from the road and the sign is really small, but once you find your way in, you can easily see that this will be a FANTASTIC place to hang out on a warm summer night. The outdoor patio seems appealing, though it's too cold to use it right now. The beer is really good and the service was also good. We were a little challenged by the early close time (stopped serving beer at 11pm, I think) but we would definitely go back.
(4)Daphne L.
Another new favorite place, another great brewery, and this one is a mere mile from home. After two visits to Temperance I am a fan of everything: the space, the beer, the layout, the people, the proximity to my house..there is nothing not to love about this addition to Evanston. And, come the summer? The patio will be a great place to have a beer, but it looks like they have a huge garage door facing the patio, which, if that's the case? Oh honey, Temperance is IT! There are 7 beers on tap, all are very good, and all are available to take home in 4 oz or growler. My current favorites are Smittytown Tart and Root Down, and I'm drinking as much of the Smittytown Tart as I can because word on the street is that it's a limited brew (no, please no!). They don't serve food, but, there is a revolving array of food trucks that park right outside on a regular basis. It's seriously the perfect solution to them not serving food, and I don't know why other places don't do this. Maybe they do, I don't know. Anyhoo, I love this and it makes me love Temperance that much more. It's a great location, there's plenty of free parking, the beer is good, and, they have card games available. Cards Against Humanity, anyone? Love Temperance.

Chill, laid back, trendy, environment. Looking for a micro brewery in a nearby suburb and came across this gem. We will definitely be coming back. Beer was pretty stellar and they offer flights of your choice which was awesome. Staff was super friendly :)

This place rocks! If you like beer, this is a place to visit. My favorite is the ThreeWay IPA and Gate Crasher IPA. Support your local brewers!!!!!

Biked here from Lake View in Chicago, which made for the perfect cycling destination. Sat on the patio on a picturesque Mother's Day eating a sandwich from Bat 17 drinking Temperance beer. Low-key vibe; parents bringing their kids after a soccer game -- love it. Didn't fall head-over-heels for their beer. The Birdsong was tasty, but everything else was just okay. Ambience, BYOFood, great space, quiet, low-key vibe are worth returning.

If you are into local spots and or minimalist bars attached to micro breweries (and I am...both) Temperance is an excellent choice. Not only do they have great beers, an outdoor patio and a decent service....you can order a pizza from the Panino's (close by) and have it delivered right to the bar. The location is in the back in an industrial park, but don't let that dissuade you. The interior is slick, and you don't feel that you're in a massive parking lot behind some low brick industrial buildings. What they lack in location and view they make up for in the quality of their beer...which is really the point here. (I was going to say raison d'être...but felt a wave of self loathing while I went to the trouble of pecking out the special characters) Anyway....I loved it ...and am looking forward to going back soon!

We were on a Brewery Tour and this was our third stop of the day. Very difficult to find--need better signage on Dempster. Parking was not a problem though, so that was good. Very nice interior. Love the wood on the walls and window. It is winter so we had to be inside but it looks like the patio outside will be nice in the summer. One of my friends did not like the low tables and little chairs but at least they had a place to sit. There are games to play too, so if you are with some friends and want a little something to do while drinking, it's a nice free touch. The music was nice. A little loud but nice. We wanted to order flights. Most tap rooms that we have gone to have little boards or something to line up your tasting glasses on. Temperance does not have this. They sell you little glasses but you don't get a written list of what you are drinking and you have to carry all of the little glasses individually to your table or wherever you are standing. There were two employees working. The woman bartender was very friendly and helpful. The guy who was working behind the bar was not. He asked us if anybody had waited on us and when we said no, he walked away. Strange. I was with a group of six people and we were there for a few hours and were ordering pretty much everything on the beer menu. At one point, the guy bartender said, "Is that all? Because I don't want to keep walking back and forth to the tap." Really?!?!? Isn't that your JOB???? Service aside, the beer was pretty good. Don't go on an empty stomach because they don't really serve food there. They had nuts, popcorn and beef jerky. They do let you order food from other vendors (saw a few pizza deliveries come through the door). I think there was a food truck outside too. But the emphasis is really on the beer. One thing I did find weird--there were quite a few little kids in the tap room. Parents--why would you bring your kids to a beer tap room? There is nothing there for them. At least the kids who were there were well behaved. But really--leave the kiddos at home.

Came here with 15 friends last week and had a great time. The space is very conducive to a large group with long tables and open spaces to mingle. The shuffle board table is an especially nice touch. Their beer is quite good and served by bartenders that know what they're talking about when asked making for an informative experience. If there was one downside it's that during last call the manager was very open about his desire to have us leave the bar even though he had just served us fresh beers five minutes earlier. It made for an abrupt end to an otherwise enjoyable evening. I'll be coming back, I just hope there's a different manager on duty!

This place is fantastical !! The beers are delicious and varied in tastes, plus change seasonally. The atmosphere is super chill with a great mix of people, anything from young college kids to folks who are def collecting a social security check. The location may seem a bit sketchy at first but you soon learn to appreciate the fact that it's a bit hidden and every drunk a-hole doesn't walk in off the street. Major plus, they do awesome theme nights regularly with music and food brought in. Def worth coming to check out and you can take home any beer you like.

Unbelievable. Went in at 7:30 on a Tuesday night. Totally dead other than some friends of the bartenders. I sat down at the bar and tried to order a beer from the menu and a tamale. The bartender informs me that they are out of that beer. Ok. That happens. I order a different one and a tamale. As I get my beer another friend of the bartender (in fact his neighbor) comes in and she is told that they have a new beer not on the menu on tap. Of course, I wasn't told this when I tried to order something. I'm not his friend. And he's an imbecile of a bartender. Then the bartenders go into a long tirade to their friends mocking people who come there and want to sample beers. Oops. I heard that. And I had just asked for a sample of the beer that wasn't on the menu. I sure feel extra-welcome now. Yadda yadda yadda, tamale never comes (they didn't put it in at all). I leave a half pint of my beer on the counter. They take my money happily. Temperance, because it makes you prefer not to drink at all than to drink local. All said, the gatecrasher was tasty. Hopefully they fix the tap room.

*Since posting this review, I've had several people (some of whom took children to Temperance) tell me that they did not share my experience. In light of this, I plan to go back to Temperance soon to see what my experience is like and raise my star rating to "average" in the meantime.* Don't Go If You're Not "Cool" This review is for service only I finally got a chance to go to Temperance today after wanting to since it had opened. Unfortunately I can't rate the beer because I wasn't served any beer. One bartender made Eye contact with me and then servedthe person behind me, another bartender asked the person next to me if they were all set and then kept walking when I tried to ask for their help. I don't know if I was being ignored because I wasn't as cool and young as the rest of their clientele, or if it was because my wife and I brought our infant son. Before you throw your hands up in the air and say "who would bring an infant to a tap room?" consider that the Temperance website says that they are totally cool with kids up to a "reasonable hour." Had I known that this hour included 5 o'clock at a place that serves food I never would've brought my son. We were planning to enjoy the nice weather on their patio, but after the seriously unwelcome vibe, I'd be surprised if we visited again.

Just tried Temperance New beer Threeway :) launched on Monday. My fave was Gatecrasher but now I love Threeway. Won't give up my Gatecrasher, so a flight of beer is really the way to go! Hubby tried the Freedive India Black Ale very dark and rich.

Really like this spot. Quality vibe, quality beer. They don't serve food inhouse here, but do a good job keeping food trucks/catering vendors around. Great outdoor patio as well. Great spot for a few beers with friends, and a nice low key hipsterish/ trendy/ craft brew spot in Evanston. Check em out, buy local.

Good beer with a friendly atmosphere. Pint prices are a bit high for a brewpub, could be the exorbitant Evanston taxes at work. They need to extend their hours eventually but otherwise a welcome change to the boring corridor of Ev/Skok/Mort/Niles and free parking to boot!

As a previous reviewer mentioned, the place was hard to find with all the contruction going on at Dempster, a sign outside the lot would've been super helpful. I went for a friend's going away party and there really was nothing special about the place. Sure there were some board games but that's about it. I was standing at the bar area for quite a bit before I got any service either. Finally when I did get serviced the beer was okay, but it was a major bummer that they didn't have any real food, just movie theater snacks like popcorn and nuts. I also noticed a ton of little kids, which I thought was really odd but I guess it's a chill enough place that no one would care to tell you to leave if the kid was reading the riot act. Overall, meh.

Temperance is awesome! I have been many times since my first visit in February. The beer is amazing and the atmosphere is great for either a casual date or a get together with friends and family. I prefer to sit at the bar if I am with a few friends, but they have long tables for larger groups, and a cool outdoor patio area. They are a bring-your-own-food place, so I have had pizza delivered to the brewery on a few occasions. I find the bartenders to be very engaging, friendly, and quick to pour. For beer recs, I am a fan of the Root Down porter and Gatecrasher IPA, which are staples on the menu. However, they have some amazing seasonal beers as well that come and go, so you better go now before they are gone!

Temperance just opened up a few months ago. So new that they still have the fresh scent of a new construction site. As a rehabbed old garage, they turned it around and have a nice open layout with lots of space for a smaller brewery. As new as they are, their beers taste as good as if they've been at this for some time. The Smittytown Tart was a solid hit. It's a limited release, but I'm hoping they make it not so limited in their rotation. We never had to wait to get a drink and the two staff members handled the crowd really well. Also, they have a shuffleboard table! Case closed, end of story. This place is great. I just wished they had been open when we still lived in Evanston. We'll definitely be back, though.

Evanston' first brewery! I went there on the first Sunday, just two days after they opened, and it was nice and quiet there, so we were able to get great service. The six beers on tap were all great. They offer 4oz samplers, 1/2 pint, 1 pint, and growlers to go. The prices are good, especially for the quality of the beer. The Smittytown Tart (an ESB with cherries) and their porter were my favorites. They also have a rye pale ale, an ESB, an IPA, and a wheat beer with blueberries. So it's a bit of something for everyone. They could dress the place up just a bit, but they're new and will have plenty of time to make minor improvements. I hope they start serving some food though, at least appetizers. Overall, a great place to hang out and have quality beer.

Picked up a growler on a quieter, slower night... Great to try a tasting portion as you get your refill! (Amazing stout!) So nice to see other kids in the space... Reminded me of a local pub overseas, where multiple generations can mix and mingle.

Came by for Chicago beer week and had a flight with my girlfriend. Waited quite a while at the bar with no one acknowledging us. The beer was mediocre to bad. The talked guy bartender was awful and looked so bored it was ridiculous. I would probably drink their beer if someone brought it to me for free but would definitely not pay for it any time soon.

what a cool laid back microbrewery spot. it's a little hard to find but definitely worth the hunt. they always have specials and i like that you can taste basically everything since they have sizes of 4oz and up to a whole growler (to take home). the bar is nice and they have a cool table shuffleboard game. they even host parties there in their taproom. prices are super reasonable for these craft beers!
