growing up only a few blocks from tag's, walking here on a saturday morning for a freshly baked donut was tradition. nothing can beat their cake donut with chocolate frosting (and yes, i am drooling right now). oh wait, then there's their smiley face cookies, and tarts, and cakes, and butter cookies and and and....yeah. everything in here is ridiculously delicious. whenever my mom makes a trip to see me, she always shows up with the little white box with the red/white string tied around it. no matter what's inside leads to instant happiness.

I was able to pick up a last-minute birthday cake the same day I needed it for a reasonable price. It was delicious and the birthday boy was impressed with the amount of flavor it packed! Highly recommend for an affordable alternative to your run-of-the-mill grocery store sheet cake. If you're looking for a large cake (sheet cake size) you'll definitely need to call a day or two ahead of time.

OH--I must correct myself on the scones. Yesterday they sold me a killer cinnamon scone. It was supposed to be today's breakfast, but once I nibbled a little corner, my will crumbled (haha), and I devoured it on the drive home. Tag's continues to be eminently reliable for cookies, especially the chocolate-chip and fun decorated varieties. I wish that they would discount their doughnuts after 5pm, since that's when I'm usually there, and they are understandably stale by then. I wonder what happens to the leftover doughnuts after closing time. Maybe I will hang out behind the store next time to find out.

I'm not always happy with things I buy here. It's the closest to home, but nothing ever looks very appetizing. I will say, I like their donuts and some cookies. The cakes, I'm ambivalent about. There is room to add two very small bistro tables, but they don't. I like the place, but I could like it so much more.

Seriously underrated Evanston Bakery - Check it out!
(5)john B.
More of a 3.5 star than a 3 star. Pretty good. Nothing transcendent. Didn't seem to be worth the 4 and 5 stars reviews others gave it (though I am something of a tough grader).

They are known for their Florentines, and according to Marie D, they are "worth the trip from anywhere in Chicago." But, I was enticed by some butter cookies and a pretzel thingy made from pie dough mixed with cookie dough covered in almonds - and wow was it deliciously rich and ginormous in size! I saw their sidewalk sign advertising marzipan baked goodies, but when I went in I quickly learned these were way too big for a single serving size and so the super colorful case of cookies called me over. A great variety to choose from. I have to say I immediately fell in love with a particular cookie batch that looked like the cookies were decorated with a single monster eye on them (in my pics). I've always know about Tag's, but yesterday was that magic day where I was on a real sugar and coffee kick, so I made the actual stop in (after my gelato). Some bakeries seem picked over when you stop in later in the afternoon, but not here. I was thrilled at the great variety, perhaps a little overwhelmed in a good way. The cakes looked old school delicious, and I imagine they are all made with a recipe that's been used and perfected over and over again all these years. The lady behind the case was super friendly and extremely patient with me when I couldn't make a decision to save my life. Thankfully my time was running out before I had to head up north, so I had her wrap up two bags of goodies. One for me and the other for my kiddos. Tag's will be a for sure stop the next time I'm passing by Central.

Their Florentine cookie was one of the most amazing cookies I have ever had. It was like a thin piece of English toffee in cookie form. Wonderful butter cookies. Sadly, all of their flaky pastries, the turnovers, donuts and apricot sticks, were old enough to have lost their flakiness, and the chocolate chip cookie was way past due. They really need to throw their old product out sooner.
(3)Kelly C.
Best bakery around! It's pretty pricy but it's worth indulging sometimes!
(5)Yav A.
My recommendations: The custard and jelly donuts are always good. If you like fruit cake, they make a pretty good one bite size or full cake for the holiday season. The spinach and feta croissant was good too. Will go back to try the cakes and other pastries!!!

The rappers say, "It's all about the Benjamin's baby!" The nurses say, "It's all about the meds baby!" The foodies say, "It's all about the Florentine's baby!" And this is where it's at. After finishing up my three month ICU nursing orientation at the hospital where I work, my preceptor gave me a box of Tag's Bakery florentines adorned with a cute gold ribbon and handwritten note stating, "Congrats! You have made it. Good luck on your own! -Stephen." He was carrying on the tradition of having received cookies when he finished his nursing orientation. Little did I know what unexpected golden treats I had waiting at the end of the long, dark, dreadful tunnel. Unfortunately, I have been to Evanston many times and never knew about Tag's. Why, why, why Yelp?! While cupcakes, gelato and waffles have become the popular treat in the Chicago food scene, these Florentine's are my new favorite discovery to share with the world. Florentine: Oyster-sized cookie consisting of very thinly sliced almonds, one side of milk chocolate, the opposing side of homemade caramel, and a pearl of marchino cherry in the middle. If you can't picture it, see Stephanie M's image here: yelp.com/biz_photos/tags… These goodies melt in your mouth (and in your hand, unlike M&Ms boasts) and stick to your teeth. Instead of this being bothersome, I view it as allow me to savor all the flavor. While I'm usually not the first person to enjoy almonds, these are simply amazing---and it tasted just as delicious the following few days, not just in a daze at 3 am in the morning while on the night shift. Although this review does not discuss the bakery, since I still have yet to go myself, it reviews their amazing Florentines. That counts, right?! I can't wait to make a stop for another box (for just myself, not as a gift or to share with the rest of my unit) in the near future. Side note: I just discovered that the Florentines are Gluten-free! Score!!
(5)Tracy H.
Usually only go to Tags for fresh Florentines (love to gift them!) YUM. My family loves their cakes but I find them pretty standard bakery cakes, super sweet. I recently tried the muffins- morning glory was excellent. They are very small for usual bakery or store bought muffins but so home-made delicious...and gave me an "excuse" to try 2

Came here right when they opened. Ordered a few cupcakes, my favorite being a lemon raspberry that was to die for. Eclairs weren't so great, i'd skip them next time. Originally came here for cookies but when I got there, they looked like they had been out from the previous day, which was really disappointing. Again, they're the reason I came here in the first place so I ended up getting just 1/2 pound. Brought them home and sadly they weren't fresh. :( 4 stars for the cupcakes.
(4)Donaye N.
Florentine cookies...TO DIE FOR!!!!! Got a yellow cake with buttercream frosting...cake was soft & moist so it was perfect for me, buttercream frosting was a little bit too sweet for my liking. Hoping to try the chocolate cake with raspberry filling soon!
(4)Marie D.
Five stars for the Florentines - worth the trip from anywhere in Chicago.
(5)Joseph D.
Not widely advertised, or well appointed. Just the most delicious cake. Wide selection of mouth watering choices with traditional cakes, but also in small portions. So you can offer one or two portions of 5 or 6 different things, instead of just a single cake. All their frosting, is light and creamy, not heavy with sugar. And I'm not even getting into the cookies, coffee cakes, etc An Evanston institution throughout my lifetime with good reason.
(5)Ehow C.
I ordered a customized chocolate banana cream pie here for a coworker's birthday party a week in advanced. The pie was prepared on time and surprisingly affordable, much cheaper than Bennison's. The service was a bit slow while picking it up, but the girl seemed like she was sort of new to the operation. The pie itself was very tasty. The cream and chocolate crust were just plain tasty. Most importantly, my coworker was very happy with the pie, and that's all that really matters.
(4)Allan M.
Yes everyone, Bennison's isn't the only bakery in Evanston. Tag's is overshadowed by you know who, but it definitely was decent, when I did go here late last year. The donuts I tried here were definitely decent(can't remember the names of any of them unfortunately), but I know the cake donuts were my favorite of the ones I tried. I also had a few non-donut pastries, that weren't bad. Don't find myself up in the Central St. area as often as I'd like, but perhaps one day I'll find something here that will feel like a triple or home run, and would push them up a star.
(3)Suzy S.
Yes, the Florentines are delicious but I consider them more of a candy than cookie and I like cookies. The smiley face cookie is delicious! The frosting thick and white chocolate tasting. But my favorite thing is their streusel strip. Buttery, sweet delicious coffee cake. Theirs is not too thick so the streusel to yeast cake ratio is perfect. I make a special trip just for this. Not a big fan of their cakes but the breakfast treats are very good.
(4)Shradha A.
I don't even know if I can start to list all the delicious things this bakery has to offer - I, in fact, don't even know the names of all the things I've tried from here but this has got to be one of my all-time favorite bakeries around! But Florentine's are the addictive part, which makes me want to drive all the way from downtown Chicago to Evanston - and you can't just eat one! Their cookies are really soft and buttery - melt in your mouth kind!
(5)Yanyao N.
I came here for one thing: Florentines. You Yelpers are right. They are incredible. Tiny little "cookies" made of thinly sliced almonds, some type of caramel, and a chocolate base, with a little piece of dried cherry in the middle. I wasn't ready to commit to a whole pound of these things, but upon next visit will happily fork over the $15ish dollars just to have a pound of these in my house at all times. We picked up a little bag on them and within hours, they are almost gone. A lot of self-control needs to be administered around florentines. Bennison's remains my standby bakery for sweet treats, but now, a trip to Central will ALWAYS involve a stop into Tag's for these delightful little almond, caramel and chocolate noms. Believe the hype. Totally worth it.
(4)Carla G.
If I am ever on a diet and you present Tag's Florentines or Smile face cookies in front of me I will quickly forget the meaning of the word diet. Their other selection of treats are also tasty, but these are just too good to pass up! The cakes are also very moist and flavorful. It's a small bakery and they have always been very friendly.
(4)Plenty F.
3 stars. The red velvet cupcake was actually pretty good. It was moist and featured the smoothest frosting I've ever eaten - it's like edible silk! The Florentines were interesting. I loved the buttery caramel and almonds. The chocolate kinda disrupted things a bit for me. They should offer a non-chocolate version of the Florentine... 'Tuscanys', maybe?? (Go ahead, you have my permission to use my idea - you know u wanna!) Sorry, but we will just have to agree to disagree on the butter cookies - they were a huge disappointment. They were soft and crumbly and lacked flavor. A little lemon extract or amaretto would greatly enhance their appeal. One cupcake, Four florentines, two butter cookies - $6. If you are spending less tan $10, be prepared to remember your ATM PIN or pay cash. They are extremely pushed about this... All in all my visit was okay. I wasn't wow'd, but I was satisfied. Heck, I'll take it. Yeah, there might be more than one bakery in Evanston, but the one with the big red sign over near the Metra station is the better bakery - hands down.
(3)Barbara B.
O.K. Since today (9/14) is "National Cream-Filled Donut Day", I had to give props to my neighborhood bakery...Tag's. I had a chocolate cream filled doughnut that was so delectable, that I felt guilty eating it. Felt kinda sinful and glutinous, especially when I heard myself saying "yummmmmmm" after each bite. This bakery is a favorite for b-day cakes, homemade breads, cookies of all sorts, homemade pies. So, if you're in or around Evanston, and have an urge for a sweet treat, stop at Tag's Bakery....you won't be disappointed.
(4)Michelle P.
Tag's makes the best birthday cakes. Ever. The cakes are gorgeous and taste good too, which is a rare combo. Lots of places have beautifully decorated cakes that taste like sawdust. Not Tag's. The cake is moist and sweet, and the frosting is a perfect blend of sugar and butter. Not too sweet, and not so rich that you feel you've just eaten a tub of shortening. Completely perfect. As for decorating - these folks are the pros! They have a huge book of sample designs, or bring in a photo, or even just describe what you want - they can do it! My family has had cakes decorated like a golf course or bowling alley, a map of the solar system, and even one where they drew an amazing likeness of my brother in frosting. They make train themed cakes that look like a scene from Thomas the Tank Engine, complete with a 3-D tunnel made of cake & frosting on top. My absolute favorite design is flowers completely covering the top - the cake looked like a flower basket. And these weren't just run of the mill roses - they were actually shaped like different varieties of flowers, and even had clusters of grapes made of frosting dangling over the side. They don't skimp on the frosting either - depending on the design, the frosting on the top of the cake can be a good inch thick. Want just a taste of cake? They sell all sorts of fancy pastries - small slices of a variety of different cakes, cupcakes, cakes with domes of frosting (did I mention how great the frosting is?), petit fours, eclairs, you name it. And then there's the donuts - over a dozen varieties, and you can even special order them. One year my son wanted chocolate donuts with yellow sprinkles for his birthday party, and Tags was able to do it, no problem. I haven't tried their huge selection of breads, but their harvest scones are perfect with a cup of coffee in the morning. They also have the typical selection of European bakery butter cookies, which aren't my favorite, but for that type of cookie they make some of the best - a little sweet and an easy to eat texture, not crumbly. They make big decorated cookies too, in kid friendly shapes like dinosaurs & teddy bears, and also in seasonal and sports team colors. Tag's is definitely one of the best bakeries out there!

Florentines. Just, just, FLORENTINES!!!!!!!!!! What a great bakery. I also remember once in desperate need of bread after a long night out. I got the croissant which was outstanding. What a great (high calorie) treat. The pastries and cakes looked amazing, I tend to stick with florentines but if the florentines are that good the rest as to be just as tasty!
(5)Kelly S.
I have limited experience, but this was good. A group of friends and I were in town just for a quick weekend, and we got some donuts from Tag's the first morning. They were solid, if not something that totally blew me away. The lemon poppy seed glazed donut was absolutely wonderful though, and the macaroons were very good. It sounds like some of their other pastries and goodies are great too! I'll have to try them next time!

I would have been mislead on this one if I looked on Yelp first... We wandered up to Central St. on our bikes one weekday morning and decided that a bakery would be a nice place to stop, so in to Tag's we walked. Everything looked super decadent and appetizing, to the point that we considered ordering a cake from here at some point. Service was quick and friendly. We ended up sampling a slice of chocolate cake, lemon tart, and two small cupcakes on some benches across the park (not really any seating in the store or outside). The two mini cupcakes and lemon tart were, in a word, gross. My two cupcakes were a bit stale, so they tasted dry on top of overly sweet; I could barely stomach a full bite. The lemon tart had a horrible rotten taste, possibly just so sweet it was rotten, or just the combination of too much sweet + old lemon that sat too long? I don't know, just wrong. Either way, they didn't taste fresh, especially the old cupcakes. The chocolate cake was actually really good and moist with a nice fluffiness. I do see good things written about their florentines, but I wish they'd call themselves a cookie shop if they couldn't reliably deliver fresh and well executed versions of the other items they offered... For the chocolate cake and benefit of the doubt on their cookies, 2 stars. I'd come back to see if the cookies are any good, but the others were so off the mark...

Just got back from visiting family in the area. Went to this bakery 3 times in a week. Cakes were awesome and so were the donuts. Try the chocolate donut with chocolate glaze. Yummmmmm. Also had cookies, carrot cake and red velvet cupcakes. Everything was fresh and very tasty.
(4)Sandy N.
I got some cookies (florentines included) from Tag's for an event, and I was not disappointed. The only con is really that it's not as conveniently located as Bennison's, but they're accomodating with orders and their treats are delicious. So if you have a car or don't mind taking the 201 bus or the Metra to get there.. by all means, stop by! :)
(4)Jenni E.
Florintines. Skip everything else and get the florintines. These cookies are to die for - they are totally worth the $14.95 per pound price and you will be back for more. I live quite a way from this bakery, but anytime I am in the area or know someone who will be I always get a pound or two of these cookies. You can also order them online - makes the perfect gift if you don't end up eating them all yourself.
(5)Rebecca L.
I love Tags. The bakery goods are wonderful. The people are delightful when they wait on you. It's a great bakery that I use often.
(5)jen m.
FLORENTINES....if you haven't had one, I'd suggest you drive over to Evanston and pick up a pound or two. Florentines are a layer of toasted nuts covered in a caramel like sauce and are coated on the bottom with chocolate. You'll become a believer, believe me. The bakery is reminiscent of an older bakery, a smaller room with display cases of sweets all over. Service is friendly and are quick with the orders. Haven't had anything else from the bakery so this review is strictly on the Florentines and the service.
(5)Chitown D.
In November, I bought a Black Forrest cake here for my husband's birthday. It was delicious. He picked it up and there was no complaining, so I assume it all went well. It took a while to place the order over the phone, but it was ready the same day and it was delicious. We'll be going back.
(5)Jennie S.
As of this moment I am sitting down to Tag's FAMOUS chocolate dipped, caramel Florentine. I wish I said I was savoring it but it's so darn good I finished it up in two bites. This gourmet bakery has something for everyone's sweet tooth. Their website is also user friendly and let's you order some pastries online. I wish someone in my office would steal the tantalizing box of goodness so I would stop staring at it thinking, "hmm, maybe just one more..."
(5)Valerie Q.
These folks have made wonderful creative birthday cakes for my kids. When I couldn't find a Pokemon cake anywhere, I bought little pikachus and such on Ebay and then brought them in to Tag's, where they created these wonderful, whimsical cakes. And this place makes awesome cider donuts, which are very hard to find outside an apple cider mill.
(5)Elmo G.
Came in recently looking to pick up a snack for my two kids. Lady behind counter couldn't crack a smile and seemed annoyed by us. (kids were silent, acting fine). Muffins were excellent. I don't know, maybe a bad day? I'm going to try again and see what happens.
(3)Julie N.
I tried out Tag's for the first time today since there was finally NO line to get inside the place. Seemed like standard bakery fare, so I opted for a baklava. Sadly, it lacked flavor. Nice crunch, but no butter flavor :(
(2)bella b.
There is not enough stars here to express how happy I was with the cake for my son's birthday. I came to Tag's a little weary because I have had a good experience with another bakery previously but after they refuse to make the cake the way I wanted it I looked for other options and I found Tag's. After talking to the chef decorator - master :))) I kind of liked what he proposed and the options he gave me but I have not seen any other work of his besides the albums at the bakery. And you know no cake is good looking enough for your child :)))) I was not completely sure if the cake will look the way I wanted it to look. On the 31st of December I went to pick it up and was I amazed ?????? it looked even better than I ever imagined. He captured every essence of what I had in mind. The colors were vivid and alive and just the whole cake was a big happy cake. I was speechless. Not to mentioned the taste - really soft and easy and airy... not those heavy buttery tasting generic cakes. That one was so light you can easily eat the whole thing. The art work - I can't stop talking about it - the details were just amazing he - the decorator thought about every detail - I could not have made a better choice. I want to say thank you one more time to Tag's for the excellent job.
(5)Sari K.
THE best chocolate fudge cake *any*where.
(5)Heather C.
So good! I wish I lived closer so I could come here more often. Although, it is probably a good thing that I don't because I would seriously stop here every day. Last week my husband and I stopped in for the first time and I was very pleased. He went with a pecan danish and I went with some sort of raspberry thing. They were both delicious. Plus, their prices are super reasonable. I can't wait to go back.
(5)theresa a.
i took one bite of Tag's Florentine and instantly understood why my friend saved the little box of them she received as a gift in the freezer for as long as she could, and shared them with reverence. that was years ago, and i made sure to remember this place. now that my friend lives in Greece, i drove all the way to Evanston just to get some Florentines to send to her.
(4)Lena M.
Wanting something sweet while at Evanston Hospital, I found Tag's from all you great people on Yelp! There's so much to choose from I had to take a moment to soak it all in. The butter cookies are just melt in your mouth delicious. I'm ashamed to admit that I ate most of the one pound box I bought all by myself - Most, not all of it. I also had to try their Red Velvet Cupcakes. It was moist and just the right hint of chocolate with the proper proportion of "red." The cream cheese frosting isn't a sock you with cream cheese type of frosting which is good. You actually taste the cupcake. I did go back a week later and bought more cupcakes and was slightly disappointed by them the second time around. They were not nearly as moist or as flavorful as the first time. It doesn't mean I didn't polish it off. I guess it's just a hit or miss thing. I tried the Florentine's because I love almonds, I love chocolate and I love caramel so put it all together ... It was just Eh. It was too sweet for me. This will definitely be a stop I have to make when I go to Evanston Hospital for Dr. appts and such. OH! If you're in a hurry, you might want to skip this place. The girls (there were 5 behind the count the second time I went and 3 the first time I went in) working there are extremely slow. I really mean slow - I was the only customer the 2nd time I was there and it still took me over 15 minutes to get 2 one pound boxes of butter cookies and 4 red velvet cupcakes. The 1st time I went in it took me just as long for 2 one pound boxes of cookies and only 2 red velvet cupcakes.
(4)Liz P.
Tag's Bakery makes me wish I lived in Evanston so I could frequent it a lot more. I've only been there twice but both times I was transported to bakery heaven. Picture the quintessential bakery in your mind and bam--that's what Tag's is. Their smiley face cookies are out of this world....the ladies behind the counter are always super friendly and the place is so quaint and smells great. And their selection is huge! Wonderful place to go. Just a heads up--they don't take credit/debit under $10.
(5)Julie S.
Smells good. Folks are nice. Everybody loves their treats:-)
(5)Jenna C.
Our fantastic office manager got me a birthday cake at Tag's. At first I was iffy, the frosting was over the top old school balloons, not too pretty. The cake however was DELICIOUS. Chocolate with buttercream frosting. All buttercream, no spun sugar, no whipped cream, no fruit filling, just classic deliciousness.
(5)Ashley B.
This review is strictly about their donuts. I've been a donut freak ever since I moved to the West Coast and couldn't have my annual Dunkin' Donuts sprinkle-covered munchkin fix. Well, I came back to Chicago and discovered that America runs on crappy, stale donuts, so now I'm trying every bakery donut I can get my hands on. I must say that Tag's donuts are better than Bennison's -- the yeast-risen plain donut I had had that awesome three-dimensional yeast flavor (sounds gross, but if you've had Bob's Donuts in L.A., you know what I mean), and the sour cream donut had a moist, delicate crumb. Both were ridiculously fresh, especially considering that I visited them at 3:30pm on a Monday! They don't seem to really advertise the fact that they have these goodies on their website...guess that means more for me!
(5)Jay D.
I wish Tag's was open on Sundays. Their smiley-face cookies are the best and happiest dessert ever, at a better price than their Evanston competitor.
(5)Marissa D.
i've gotta give this place 2 stars for their cake. while the cake-part was moist and satisfactory, i am not a fan of their frosting. tastes a little too much like whipped air. i prefer a frosting that sticks to you, like what you find at mandy b's.
(2)Laura L.
Highly recommend the smiley face cookies (or the other various shapes and designs, ie, cubs, flowers, animals). The frosting is of a chocolate consistency and goes great with the hinting of cinnamon in the cookie! I've been eating them since I was a toddler! The other baked goods are also delicious and they have lovely holiday specialties!
