4.5 stars! The last time I was at Peet's I was shopping at Whole Foods near by and had a horrible cold. I was losing my voice, and desperately needed tea. So we stopped in. Peets staff was fast and friendly (and patient with a near mute customer). I had the most amazing pot of hibiscus tea! Their coffee is great, but this is an amazing place if you love tea! P.S. It's a great location to people watch or just sit and read (or study).

I'm here to profess my love for this place. Combine the fantastic coffees, the talented, friendly, and knowledgable baristas, and the perfect atmosphere and I get that "gonna go outta my way for some Peet's" kinda love.

Peet's is a chain based out of Berkeley. The Evanston location was the first Peet's store to open outside of California. The Peet's guy told me Evanston had the highest amount of Peet's mail-order coffee orders outside of CA (probably from all the CA natives at Northwestern). Peet's gives you that neighborhood coffee shop sort of feel. Whether barista or cashier, the staff take their time with your order, and even spend time answering questions. Their coffee and teas are excellent, complemented by a nice selection of muffins, breads and even fruit. I grabbed a vanilla latte (sugarless, a first!) with a slice of banana nut bread and got a seat by the nice floor-to-ceiling windows and watched Evanston go by. While street parking may have you circling around the block a few times, there is a public garage nearby (Church & Chicago) which offers the first hour free. The only minus however, is that Peet's is only open until 8PM everyday.

Been here last week .... compared with one in Chicago (on North Ave)\ This Peet's has better environment and bigger space. Mocha is good as always....I got to say Peet's coffee is more tense and better taste of coffee than Starbucks

My now favorite place in Evanston.

Great tea selection, and the best selection of baked goods I've found in either Rogers Park or Evanston. Four stars, not five, because they only give one hour of free wi-fi, and they don't have enough space for their foot traffic. I've been there a few times to work and I thought I would have to turn around and leave because there was nowhere to sit. So far, someone has always left just as I was debating whether to get in line. Ony a matter of time, though. Still, I like it a lot.

this is one of very few peet's cafes in the midwest, and every time i come to chicago i make a stop here or at the one in the city; there really should be one in ann arbor. it's one of the nicest peet's i've ever been to. but altho i profess eternal loyalty to peet's coffee, this one doesn't serve the drip coffees quite right. it's brewed a bit light, lighter than peet's stores usually brew it. it's usually so strong you wonder if they did it wrong, and then you take another sip and realize that's how it is. overdone? maybe, but you really taste how good peet's coffee is. at this store, they don't make it quite that strong, which is weird. peet's, please open a store in ann arbor

I'm not sure if every Peet's is this good, since this is the only location I've been to, but I'm impressed. As far as corporate coffee chains go, it's way better than starbucks. The baristas are trained to be able to taste subtle nuances between different coffee and teas, so they know their stuff. The loose tea is my favorite, and you can buy tins of it to take home :D

I'm giving 'em one star because they're such snots. I've bought about $2,000 worth of coffee from these guys over the years and it's generally just what you'd expect: competent big-chain coffee drinks in a pleasant if generic setting. Worth 3-4 stars. So I went in during a long bike ride and wanted some ice for my water bottle and I figure this can't be that big a deal, but after waiting in a fairly long line when I get to the barrista I'm told "they'll get to me when they're done serving their paying customers", which I guess I'll never be again. Sheesh.

I had no idea they had Peet's Coffee around here! While I like it much better than Starbucks (which isn't saying much), it still has a few quirks. I thought my coffee was kind of bitter (heated too long?). On the other hand, this location is big (nice!) and has free wireless (even better!), but only about two power outlets in the whole coffee shop, which makes it kind of useless. Friendly staff, though, I must say.

Drip coffee is really really fresh, every single day. Very nice, fast people behind the counter. Comfy and quiet, too. Wish they'd add more outdoor benches, though.

On my first visit here, I was a little overwhelmed by the amount to choose from. They had their pumpkin spice latte marked as a suggestion, and I took it, and boy am I glad. Delicious stuff! Rather than schlep your drink on the corner and yell out the type of drink, they call your name, which they politely ask for while you order. And I love this.. made me feel like I'd been coming here for a long time even though it was my first (and surely not last) visit. Their space is spread out, so not everyone has to sit in each others lap or eavesdrop on conversations. Their bathrooms are large and clean and have not only a hook to hang your purse, but also a shelf to place your belongings.

I read the reviews and decided to try Peet's, because the reviews were so strong. Big disappointment. The place is nice, but the seating is not intimate at all. We tried the Chai tea and it was very disappointing, it tasted watered down. The only good thing about it was that it was warm on a snowy day. This place has potential, but it seemed to be more of a place for commuters and passerby's, and not people who make this a destination to spend some quality time at.

Peets here is exactly as it is in the Bay Area. I love walking in and just smelling the smell of Peets. Sounds crazy, but it's true. It's ok for lingering, but really, go there for the coffee. Blend 101 is great if you want low acidity coffee. Pastries are blah for the most part. Again, just go for the coffee. Wifi is free w/ purchase for 2 hours.

It's too bad these aren't all over the place here like they are in California, but I'm glad there's one near Northwestern. Delicious. I completed my obligatory tenure as a Starbucks barista when I was in college, and, I mean, Starbucks has a higher quality control than a lot of small coffee places, but Peets blows them away. Of course, as I'm sure many of you know, once you're a barista and you realize how (and how not to) make a drink, you can't help but cringe when you watch people re-steam milk or let your espresso shot sit for 5 minutes. I'm sure everyone is relieved to know that Peet's passes my rigorous scrutiny. Virtually all Starbucks locations have been using these soulless automatic espresso machines for the past couple years (the coffee is ground, tamped and brewed in the machine) which is just sort of icky. Peet's espresso isn't ground and tamped until you order it, AND a small has two shots of espresso (the standard 12 oz at the bucks is one shot). The soy milk is better (starbucks buy special Silk soy milk with extra sugar in it) and the people are very friendly (ok fine, i guess starbucks baristas aren't bad either. I mean, I was one...) It is also a good place to read or study, that is, if you can find a seat.

I had the best iced americano here I have ever tasted. Admittedly it did pack quite a wallop of caffeine. persons with heart conditions, pregnant women--you've been warned.

this chain is a little more focused on coffee than its competition. strong, fresh, and wakes you up. maybe too strong for some. if you keep drinking Peet's, you may think all other coffee chains are weak. oh, and there is some tea selection but small.

  • Lena B.

The vanilla latte I ordered blew my socks off. It was dark and rich and sultry, and I am so totally hooked. I've sampled quite a few of the other local coffee houses since and so far, only Metropolis beats Peet's on flavor. Their customer service, however, beats all other cafe's, hands down. The staff are friendly, knowledgeable, and incredibly patient. I bought my parents coffee from Peet's for Christmas and the lady who helped me carefully explained the different beans and their flavors. She wrapped everything for me when I'd made my choices, and then gave me a free drink coupon for my next purchase. I plan on being here a lot!

I think Peet's is the only other chain coffee shop in Evanston besides Starbucks, so it's hard for me not to compare the two. The conclusion I come to is that Starbucks (at least the one on Sherman Ave. which has no seating room) is for a quick coffee to go and Peet's is a better place to sit and chill. I love getting a pot of tea here and the lattes are tasty, but every time I come in here, no matter how empty it is, it takes a good 5-10 minutes to get my drink. That may seem like nothing, but I usually get my coffee to go en route to class and those extra minutes mean something. Bottom line: if you want to sit and drink coffee and chill out or do work, Peet's is a good option. But if you want your coffee to go, I'd recommend going elsewhere.

Best. Coffee. In. Evanston. Wow. Not even close. I believe I had a hazelnut blend, and I'd like to be dropped in a vat of this stuff so I could drink my way out. The atmosphere was very modern, and I like my coffee shops with more wood than metal, but it's hard to complain when the java is this good. It was empty when I went, but I could see space being an issue in peak hours.

I don't usually come here to drink coffee or tea (although I do like it), but I will go to buy tins of tea. What I love about this place is that they have Tea tasting on Sundays. Maybe other days as well, but I've only noticed on Sunday. They're very helpful - a few months ago I was there and asked about a particular tea pot they sell in the store and the woman working there went so far as to brew a pot of tea in the pot I was asking about. They can also help pick out tea that they think you might enjoy based on teas that you already like.

Main draw for me here is the people watching at one of the window-side barstool seats. Unfortunately, on some wintery mornings the windows get so fogged up that you can't see out. Overwise, they do a pretty good job on the mochas.

Fantastic coffee - definately adds flavor and personality to this place. A bit cramped and gets crowded easily but the coffee is worth it.

  • The Undertow W.

Outstanding coffee...if you like DARK roast. The quality and care that Peet's puts into its brew is exemplary, although the taste may not suit those used to more tame fare. As for service, the staff is generally friendly and good, but I've been going here for years and I must say that turnover in the last couple years has resulted in some erratic service and the space itself has looked more ragged (e.g. lights out in the toilet...for months). That said, the coffee really is great and on a good day that staff and store are fine too.

  • David S.

I'm new to Evanston but have been to many of the standard coffee haunts. Peet's makes my favorite coffee. An additional bonus is that it definitely a place where I can get work done. My barista was friendly and knowledgeable. Just in case you are curious, my sugar-free Mocha was absolutely perfect.

I've only had tea here, but I've heard so many people say that this is the best coffee in town. Only complaint - not enough tables and chairs to accomodate all those lovers.

  • Meredith F.

First time at Peet's, and it was a fairly pleasant experience. I went at around 3 in the afternoon, and there was a variety of people, both younger and older, sitting at their computers or reading or just drinking some of Peet's above average coffee and eating a piece of banana cake. I wasn't thrilled that the iced teas were "no longer in season", but my decaf costa rican coffee was good. They play soft classical music, and for a little while it was extremely quiet in the store. I observed that Peet's fills big orders for coffee, desserts, and/or other beverages, and they sell a lot of different coffees in bulk if you're looking for a gift. As Jaclyn said, their seating is less than impressive, with only a couple bigger tables, a sort of bench with small tables, and window bar seating. Definitely choose this place if you want a little bit of a quieter environment, great coffee, and a less "chain" feeling than others.

Their coffee is the BEST! Although, the store is small, so it gets crowded in there. They also have tasty treats to go with their delicious coffee and tea.

After being here week after week every single day and getting addicted to their teas, I felt like I owed it to them to write this review. Peet's is definitely a place that deserves 5 stars; however there are some minor issues that lead to the star drop. First of all, I think that Peet's is the best coffee shop in the Evanston area. It is located on the main street, and the huge windows and tall ceilings allow the customers to feel spacious no matter how busy it gets. I think they have one of the greatest local coffee and tea selections (rare teas definitely recommended) and the staff is always warm and welcoming which makes the wait that sometimes gets too long due to the excessive interest much more bearable. I think that seating is arranged perfectly considering the building design, and you never feel like you are squeezed between people. I think that it rather depends on the experience rather than the words to understand the value of the teas and service (I used to be a huge coffee fan, now I drink nothing but tea) Now comes the issues: - The air conditioning is really problematic. It has no middle setting, so it gets either steaming hot or freezing cold. That's why the staff has to manually turn it on and off at random intervals. I feel like it's not really that hard to hire someone to look into this problem. - The plugs are a huge issue. There are basically 4 plugs on the walls of the main area, and there are way too many on the bar side. I always feel like I am on the hunt for plugs, and it can be easily arranged with an extension cord fix. - It's wonderful that the shop opens up so early, but it also closes way too early (8 pm) and after that there is only Kafein in the area. - The internet is allowed for 1 hours only. I think it's a great idea and that's not the problem. The problem is the internet is a bit too slow. After seeing speeds around 2 MB/s at Coffee Lab that was opened only couple months ago, I feel like Peet's could do better, considering the amount of visitors that use the internet at any given time. All in all, highly recommended!

I love Peets - the coffee is worth the money and the pastries are fantastic. It tends to be crowded (because its great) but when you get a seat, its the best. I finished my final paper of college on the barstool there and I couldn't have picked a better place!

    (5)
  • Grace H.

The coffee is always rich and it makes you feel divine. With my wildcard I get a dollar off their pastries. Their almond croissants and banana bread are so plump and satisfying. I love studying at Peets, because it's pretty quiet and serene. I also like to meet up with people at this cafe for catching up or just spending some quality time.

  • Stephanie C.

Even though I live right next door, I've only come to Peet's a few times because they have odd (read: not very long) hours and spotty wifi. Otherwise, coffee is great, service is good, and the ambiance is relaxed and pretty quiet--IF you can find a seat; it's usually packed. I got an iced latte when I came here today, and it was perfectly fragrant and creamy--none of those burnt notes in the coffee you can get from other coffee shops in the area.

  • Lisa A.

From their coffees to their teas, I prefer Peet's over Starbuck's any day. They have roomy interior for enjoying your beverage and there are a couple of benches outside for basking in the sunshine. They offer free Wi-fi as expected My favorite is the Macha green tea lattes!

  • Liz T.

I really am beginning to be a Peet's nut. I'm more of a small roaster, local coffee connoisseur but Peet's has done a tremendous job with their espresso and baked goods. Better yet, the staff is always friendly. I was especially pleased with my drink and the barista took the time to tell me what they're trained to do to make the espresso taste so good. They have a nice balance between quick and friendly. The location is great in downtown Evanston. There is plenty of the study crowd as well as local professionals getting their caffinne.

Peet's is my usual go-to coffee shop if I haven't had my daily cup of caffeinated goodness. I walk to campus on most days, and during the colder months, it's always great being able to duck into Peet's and grab a piping hot beverage to enjoy as I continue to walk to class. The coffee here is consistently refreshing, and the espresso is great as well, though a little on the stronger side (in my opinion). The matcha latte is also delicious, although I tend to ask for one pump of sweetener rather than the usual three or so. As for baked goods (10% off with Wildcard!), I've only had the almond croissant, which is heavenly and often visits me in my dreams. The best part about Peet's is the customer service. There have been times where the wait time is extremely long and/or another customer accidentally walked off with my drink, but during each mishap, I've been presented with a free drink voucher for my next visit. During another visit, the barista started chatting with me and ended up giving me a free latte (with a complimentary extra shot) once he heard it was finals week. Honestly, I haven't had a grumpy barista take my order even once, so I love how friendly and cheerful the staff can be. :) Cons - Peet's tends to be on the crowded side any time of the day, so the wifi can be a little shaky. On that same note, the wait time for your beverage can be on the longer side, but the baristas really do take the time to make your drink just the way you like it. :)

Peet's is alright --their tea selection is great, and otherwise the atmosphere is too generic. This location is frequented by college students.

My husband and I have been to this Peet's a couple times recently and I must say, it's not that impressive. The first time we went the line was so long that they forgot to make my drink. It took about 15 minutes to receive it. The baristas were apologetic and gave us a card for a free drink, which was nice... But the day I went to redeem it, the chai latte I ordered was cold. I actually saw the barista pouring COLD soy milk into my HOT latte. The latte took at least 5 minutes to get, and there were people in line, so I didn't bother asking for a new one. As a former barista, I understand little mistakes and the stress of pleasing everyone, but I still don't know if I'd waste my time coming back. Next time I want a latte in Downtown Evanston, I'll likely just go to Starbucks on Sherman or try Kafein or Unicorn Cafe if I want something different.

The people are friendly, smells like beautiful fresh coffee. Drinks are amazing. They have almond milk.

    (5)
  • Katrina D.

They have really good coffee, but the service is not the best at times. The lady at the register asked for my name to put on the order, but the barrista only said the name of the drink, and so a customer who was behind me in line took it and dashed off even though she ordered something else.. I ended up with her drink and told the barrista what happened, he sarcastically offered to make me a new one then laughed with the other barrista. So I said no, and took the drink that I didn't order, and they laughed even more... Thanks Peet's, your employees are the best...

  • Bennett M.

They take their time to do it right. The lattes are way better than Starbucks and they don't have that bitter taste Starbucks has. Good foam !

  • Sharon C.

I was here this morning for brunch with a friend, and I ordered a loose leaf black tea and an almond croissant. The ordering process was a little chaotic, it was difficult to find a seat, and I almost missed my tea when it came out because they called "English Breakfast Blend" instead of "black tea," and I had no idea that it was mine. The tea, however, was very well presented and quite delicious, and the almond croissant was quite good as well - I had my initial reservations because it was very, very crunchy on the outside, but the inside was still soft and it contained the perfect amount of filling.

    (4)
  • Cheryl S.

good coffee here, great wifi, however why have a cafe counter if the employees never check on you. You have to get up and leave your belongings to go to the register to order, order it to go, and return to your seat. Next time put in comfy couches and lounge it up if you aren't going to "serve" coffee at the counter.

  • Caty H.

Peet's did a flakey follow-up-ish. I did everything they asked me to do, in the comment they left, and they told me to anticipate a call back to chat about the issue. Never happened. So, Peet's, I'm done. You guys were once so solid.

Another coffee spot near the Northwestern U campus with lots of seating options - that are always almost full (seriously, there should be at least another 3 or 4 coffee houses in Evanston to handle the demand this area pulls). I like the seating and design of this place, so despite some problems with service, I have returned a couple of times. But, those problems ... I've only ever ordered the Chai Latte here, a couple of times, and it has tasted completely different EVERY time. Is there no recipe for this thing? Am I ordering it wrong? Not sure what's up, but sometimes it tastes sugared and syruped (like it should!!!), and sometimes it tastes like regular old Chai with a splash of milk (watery). Not a fan of the inconsistency here, baristas! Also, the staff seems rushed, overworked, distracted, kinda grumpy and annoyed at all times. All of them - whether or not there are customers at the counter. Is it that lack of recipes? Do they need more training? Who knows, but these issues bring Peet's to a very average 3-star rating. :/ Oh, and the wifi was painfully slow during today's visit. :( You can do better Peet's!

  • Vicky A.

Been wanting to try this coffee for some time. I went with my friend and I got the icee Carmel latte and she ordered the blended caramel freddo. They were both very good. Very nice area that it's located in and found parking very easily. The place is kinda big, so it's a very good sized coffee shop. It must be very popular because there was a line of 10 people behind me. The people working there are really nice, especially the girl at the cash register, that complimented me on my necklace Lol. Peet's has become one of the coffee shops that I will go to often. I like that they have benches outside and will be nice to sit there once the weather gets warmer.

Everyone is friendly and accommodating. I've ordered lattes here a couple times. They also have a water dispenser which is very convenient since coffee dehydrates you. The atmosphere is cozy and very good for studying.

Used to love Peet's. Their lattes and pastries were all pretty good. But yesterday, I came in for a plain coffee in preparation for exams that day and because I was running late. Unfortunately, I got super sick! My stomach hurt throughout the entire day and I couldn't focus on my tests at all. Later on in the day, it started to resemble food poisoning. I'm not sure if this was because of the coffee, or the half and half I added to it. Didnt expect this from peet's at all as it has always been reliable in the past. But I don't think I will come back here and risk it again.

Requirement for a great coffee shop: great coffee, decently priced unless it's a mom and pop shop, friendly service, positive and cozy environment, and, last but not least, WIFI!! Five requirements and five stars. This is getting 3, and that's giving it the benefit of the doubt. I came with a coffee in hand bc Kafein wifi was oddly not working. I bought a little treat and sat to finish my thesis....super slow internet and I had to share a small table with someone bc the place barely had an seating, most of which was at a counter and it was filled. This wanna-be Starbucks is not comfortable, is not fulfilling my basic need for wifi and doesn't seem great or studying bc they don't have big enough tables. Haha they also didn't have napkins..but I'm sure I caught them at a bad time. Oh, well.

I like everything about this place EXCEPT the terribly crappy internet speed. if they fix it, I'll be back for the great coffee. if not, Kafein is right across the street...

Great coffee- especially the lattes and cappuccinos. Stopped here with a friend after visiting Northwestern University and thought it was a Starbucks as the look inside is very similar. When you taste the coffee, that's where the difference kicks in. Great service, great coffee, warm roomy atmosphere- what more could you ask for?

  • Tim B.

Peet's is, somewhat surprisingly, not a bad place. I say "surprisingly" because I don't expect much from chain restaurants, let alone chain cafes; but they do deliver, and I will explain why this earns them three stars. Relative to other restaurants: This is more of an issue with Yelp's obtuse rating system but it needs mentioning. These three stars are, in part, relative to all of the other restaurants here in Evanston; while it is a good place to get coffee it is not a 5 star joint like some may consider Farmhouse, Quince, etc Relative to other coffee shops: If this were the only metric Peet's would do quite well. It is better than all other chain coffee shops in Evanston --seriously, if you go to a place like Starbucks you aren't doing it because you enjoy coffee. The coffee is pretty good; not Bridgeport-good but still leagues beyond most of what evanston offers --this includes cafes like Unicorn. Especially for the price --cheaper than starbucks-- Peet's beats the competition. Rated against itself: Although the coffee is good I'd say Peet's is lacking in other amenities. The wifi has always been fairly slow, which is a problem for me as internet is the second commodity I wish to consume at a cafe. Inside it looks like a chain, which is to say nothing spectacular (and heaving on the smooth brown tones), and the seating isn't super comfortable (though no worse than a starbucks). That said, if you are just looking to grab a coffee on the go then none of these are of much concern.

I really like this location in the heart of Downtown Evanston - close to shopping, restaurants, the lakefront and Northwestern's campus. Quality of drinks is high, freshly brewed coffee all the time, and a decent selection of baked goods. I often stop here when in the area. Decent table space, and counter space for people watching as they pass the shop.

I only stop by Peet's occasionally since it's usually out of my way, but every time I've come, I've usually gotten some sort of flavored mocha drink. It's always rich and delicious, and the staff is always friendly. I wish their tables were bigger though, so I can bring work to do it next to natural lighting near their glass windowpanes, though during prime afternoon hours there never seems to be any open anyway. Not my personal go to place to get work done, but I'd never hesitate to swing by there if I'm in the area and need a caffeine fix.

  • Cassie S.

I'm sorry, I am just not a fan. First off, they are never open! Their hours are very limited, especially for a coffee shop in a (sortof) college town. Service is sooooo sloooow. And finally, the drinks just don't do it for me. I judge coffee/tea places based on their soy chai and this one was so bad that I couldn't drink it. I went once more and tried a vanilla soy latte, which was also awful. There are plenty of other places for good coffee and tea around - not worth wasting my time or money here.

    (2)
  • Daniel And Kelsey P.

A lot of the bad reviews were mainly because of their 1-hour limited wi-fi. However, this is not the case anymore. Peet's wi-fi is unlimited and works fine. Their service is great and their interior is spacious, clean, and looks great. Drinks are well-made by baristas that know what they are doing. I also love the fact that they serve all kinds of tea, especially matcha green tea. Coming from Japan, it's hard to find good green tea in America. Peet's definitely knows how to do their green tea right!

Nice atmosphere, and good service. Went here with a few friends who enjoyed their drinks. Their pastries are delicious, mostly because they're from Bennison's Bakery. I had the banana bread.

Bad experience at Peet's. I have come here to meet colleagues quite often, but I am not sure I can go back. I got there at 7am to get some work done and sat at a table by the window/door. The manager lady thought it might be the right time to supervise an employee cleaning out their shelves or something, disregarding the fact that the cleaner they were using would make a normal person nauseous (especially on an empty stomach), and fully aware that this activity was making me so squished at my table that I could not even cross my legs. I felt for the woman who was on her knees squished next to my table who was asked to clean and resort the product in their shelves. But why do this when there are customers around? Or did I appear as such a benign person that I just didn't count. I finally got up to leave, my coffee only 1/3 drunk, and the manager said that they would move to cleaning another shelf (further away from where I was sitting). But I left anyway. I left because the manager knew (as any normal person would, and as her tone and quick "we'll move" signaled) that she was disrupting customers and just didn't care. That is horrible customer service.

Peet's has the best baristas in town -- helpful, friendly and knowledgeable. Great space to catch up with a friend or do homework or just read a book. The chai latte is really great (I only ever have it with soy, so not sure how it is with other kinds of milk) as is the soy vanilla latte (I guess there's a theme here with my drink orders). As others have noted, not very many outlets which may be the only con--so maybe come here to do homework that doesn't require a laptop?

Great coffee, and staff! The pastries are also good but they don't have a toaster oven, which seems like a great oversight considering how much it costs. My solution was to stop purchasing pastries which is great for my wallet and waistline, so I guess, thank you, Pete! I am giving them a 5 stars because they have a great ambience, coffee, and staff, all of which are key. But seriously, can I get a warm pastry too?

This place had pretty great coffee. The baristas were excited to give you the details on the coffee, which were numerous. I had a medium (huge) "101" coffee, which tasted great. I can't vouch for any other flavor though. Listening to the baristas, however, it all sounded delicious. Great atmosphere, not too noisy, seemed like a place I could stop by again.

The staff ran out if the required ingredients to make my drink, and generously offered me a free drink while I waited for them to prepare the drink I had already ordered! Though I would have been just fine waiting a measly five minutes, the gesture was so kind! Lovely staff, calm atmosphere, and my drink (once it was ready) was cool and refreshing!

Let me just say right off... if not for Peet's, I wouldn't have made it through graduate school in one piece. There is something magical about this Peet's. I wish I were kidding after I said that. I'm being super serious though... for the most part. Why? Here's why... While Peet's Evanston is often packed (particularly between 9AM and Noon and from 2:30-5ish PM), customers continue to be loyal to this specific store. I am often there on school year weekdays from 2-6 working away and I always see what I call the "3:30 Crowd" consisting of a (presumably) university professor writing on his laptop, an older gentleman who always wears fabulous linen suits (topped with hat) even in 90 degree weather, a mother who takes her "break from the children" by reading a novel and sipping tea, and a business school student who always talks on his iPhone while he sips his iced coffee and eats a scone... and that's just the 3:30 Crowd. There's also the 5 PM Crowd... but I'll save that for another day! I think these are the reasons why the 3:30 Crowd (and others) stay loyal to Peet's: 1. The barista turn-over is relatively low for a chain. I feel many of the staff have remained there since I first started going three years ago. A few of the baristas know my "usual" and when I don't order my "usual," they look at me like something's wrong... and usually that's the case. (Exhibit A: I order pumpkin spiced lattes in the fall or some heavy creamy drink in the summer if I had a "bad day.") 2. The coffee, while strong, is delicious. It took me awhile to get used to Peet's coffee, but over time, I learned to appreciate the richness of their blends and particularly their espresso. I always order an iced Americano and I still think they have the best iced Americanos in Chicagoland (Metropolis and Intelligentsia included!). 3. The ambiance is welcoming for students, businesswomen and men, scholars, and locals alike. One of the "usual faces" I see at Peet's said once that unlike other coffeehouses, Peet's has a "mature feel." I'm not exactly sure what she meant by that, but from what I gather, I think she thinks Peet's is an environment suitable for serious workers and folks who like the coffeehouse feel without the quirkiness of your typical "beatnik"/"hipster" coffeehouse. That, and we both agreed, we like the classical music playing... 4. The pastries are from Bennison's. Yup. 5. This is probably more specific to my personal likes, but I love that for every $25 you put on a Peet's gift card, you get a complimentary medium drink. Since I'm there often anyway, it pays to do this! I've had some radical academic breakthroughs at this Peet's over my usual iced Americano, and I must say again, this Peet's helped me get through some intense workloads! Thank goodness for Peet's in Evanston!

I really enjoyed my experience here. I ordered a white chocolate mocha. Very tasty. I appreciated that if I had chosen to stay there and enjoy my beverage they would have given me actual glass ware instead of a paper cup. They got my drink to me in a prompt manner and added the personal touch of using your name to give you your drink. I like that you can either sit in or just walk in and walk back out. Very clean interior, bright, well decorated too.

I'm not a fan of this Peet's. I really love soy chai lattes and I order it pretty much everywhere to use as a standard for comparison (either that or their house coffee, black). I thought their chai here was probably one of the worst chai latte's I've ever had. It wasn't sweet enough, but when I added sweetener, it tasted strange and I didn't know what was up. I can make much better chai myself at home. Also their wifi here is limited to 1 hour unless you buy something else. While I understand the logic of having this rule, Evanston is a college town and most of the other coffee shops don't have this, so I don't see why Peet's does.

I love Peet's! First time I tried them was in California and then found out they had a place in Evanston. The coffee is wonderful :), employees are great, and the place is cute. Their teas are really good too.

Peet's! PEET'S! Why the big, bold excitement? I completely associate Peet's with California, and when I'm in San Francisco for work I stop by Peet's at least once a day. Though we do have a Peet's on North Ave, it is practically in California considering that this particular stretch of North Ave is impossibly busy. Always. So, I just don't go to Peet's. Imagine my excitement as I'm driving through Evanston and see my ol' friend. Is it too late in the day for coffee? Probably... but out of sheer proximity, I had to stop. I've never been big on fancy espresso drinks (I do hear these are spectacular here), but I'm a simple regular-cup-of-joe kinda girl. It may not be glamorous, but I can do without all that milk, foam and syrup. Save the labor pains and give me the baby! The cafe is comfy with enough room should you wish to linger, and has free wi-fi. I love the Peet's staffers - they mean business! Just like their coffee. I'll be back, you can count on it.

Green tea freddo is fantastic, the mocha decent. With a bustling posh-euro atmosphere, the feel is very modern and slick. But the true glory of this place is the coffee and tea tasting. They have endless different roasts and tea varieties, so go there, find a free barista, and ask to learn all about their teas and coffees. You will be amazed at the range of knowledge they have about each and you'll end up with the best tea leaves and coffee beans you've ever had. Do it!

  • Hillary B.

This place is really convenient and relaxed, like a significantly less-hipster Kafiene...service is always extremely fast, so great that I can be running late, see a long line inside, and still get a coffee in time to catch a shuttle. As a working and studying environment, it's also great, plenty of space to find a little spot and order a big mug of coffee. The maple latte is incredible, which you can't actually get at Starbucks or anything that I've seen...it's perfect and so are the little healthy snacks at the counter leading up to it!

    (5)
  • Clement C.

This coffee spot is great. Similar in quality to Starbucks, but better in my opinion. The have the usual coffee selections, but also seasonal innovations that are just delicious. The space is also very nice, big windows, rustic tables, right next to the Whole Foods, and across from Kaffeine - another good spot.

Nice change of pace from the run of the mill Starbuck's. This place makes a fantastic red eye and has very nice pastries (which is where the "other" shop really falls down IMO). I live 45 miles west of this location and when I want a nice long bike ride, this is where I head to. Often crowded on weekend mornings, even when the line is long the staff does a decent job of making all the hand-crafted drinks. Definitly worth the wait, the drive or the ride!

Whenever it fits into my schedule, I like to sit at this Peet's for a coffee. Sometimes I come just for a great cup of coffee and some "me time." Sometimes, though, I'm in work mode and need to use the Wifi and power outlets to crank out creative goodness. I like sitting at the bar at the south end of the room. There are plenty of power outlets. If the sun is not too strong, the east-facing window seats are great for people watching and vegging out. When I'm not in work mode, I find that Peet's is a great place to make a new friend. I've met several "regulars" and "first timers" who just happen to have an open seat near them. Conversations are all over the map, as you might imagine, and occasionally a long term friendship is born. The WiFi used to be pretty flaky, but in recent months I've noticed it is plenty spunky, so no complaints. Mallory, the manager, runs a tight ship. Sarah, Halle, Wendy and the rest of the team are all fun, dedicated folks. One area of improvement: if you come late in the morning when business is most brisk, it may be hard to find a seat, the water jug is likely empty, and the fresh coffee may be refilling. But be patient. It's worth it.

PEETS IS AMAZING! The staff here are so amazing helpful. I would quickly like the share a story that highlights the first-class customer service of the staff at this location. This morning I went to peets to buy a much-needed iced red eye, as I have to finish a paper that is due in the afternoon. I went into Peets, bought my coffee, and then attempted to leave the store. However, I could not find the keys to my car to save my life. Wendy walked me through all the places I had been in the store before and after I purchased my coffee. After about 25 really stressful minutes, Wendy was able to find them in the trash. Apparently I had accidentally thrown them out! She was SO helpful, patient, and accommodating. Not only do I LOVE the coffee at Peets, I LOVE the STAFF!! Thank you thank you thank you!!!

I'd happily trade my Starbucks habit for Peet's. Too bad there isn't one by my office. :( If you know Peet's, you know what you're getting here. If you don't know Peet's and you love coffee, this is a MUST TRY. I have to stop at every Peet's I see. Good thing there are only 2 locations in the Chicagoland area. The folks who work here are knowledgeable and efficient - unlike that kid in Cabazon... 20 minutes for a latte?! but I digress. I *heart* the super coffee geeks here.

    (4)
  • Jenny F.

Solid, dependable cup o' coffee/latte. Free wifi and good working atmosphere - finding a seat is really difficult though. Also, they have manual espresso machines so it takes awhile for the latte to be made so not exactly your quick on-the-go coffee. But if you want to grab a cup of coffee with a friend and chat, its a great place.

I love Peet's and I can't quite put my finger on why. It's not exactly bursting at the seams with old-school charm - it's much more sterile and there are not as many comfy couches. But here's why I gave it five stars... It's a nice place to work. Kafein can get a bit too noisy, so it's a more fun place to catch up with friends instead of finish an essay, for example. You can buckle down but still enjoy a friendly coffeshop atmosphere. There are delicious coffee drinks here, but if tea's more of your thing, you're covered. The tea selection is excellent as well, and so are the baked goods. It's not a caricature of itself like Kafein is, but that's OK by me. This is a great place to work and get caffeinated. What more could you want?

I've been going to Peet's in California for the last fifteen years. The service at this location is horrible - there's always six people behind the bar, with only two making coffee, yet one cashwrap is always open, and never two, especially during peak hours. It shouldn't take ten minutes to order a plain coffee - this Peet's needs to take a page from the operations manual from Starbucks. Horrible, horrible, horrible. Drives me nuts every time I go. The only reason I go is because it's next door.

A cut above the typical coffee place and they know how to make a brewed cup of tea (loose or with bags-i recommend loose). Staff is very helpful and people were enjoying their various coffees as they read the Tribune on a Sunday am.

Been here a couple of times and still haven't been wowed. Both times the coffee has been awful, like thick tar. This morning I decided to take advantage of the "free wi-fi" and get some work done. 1. it's not "free," you have to buy a drink and you get ONE hour of internet time. 2. it's so crowded and people are not very friendly about sharing outlets for computers. 3. it was very loud, may have been negatively influenced by the two girls with fake voices screeching next to me, but even after they left I kept my music on. After 2 hours of this insanity I walked next door to Whole Foods and enjoyed my FREE wi-fi and quiet space. My only regret is not having done that sooner.

  • Kristi P.

Great coffee! I mean this as a compliment when I say this is basically a Starbucks with a different name (coming from a Bucks snob, here) I am so happy to find this place bc it is right around the corner from my work and Starbucks is a much longer walk. I ordered a latte and was perfectly sweetened, I didn't need to add anything to it. Ima happy girl now.

Consistently the best cup of espresso in Chicagoland. Best I've found anyway. I buy my beans here, too. Not a bad place to hang out and work, read, or chat either.

This Peet's excels at customer service! Mallory and the gang are always so chipper and friendly that the sometimes long waits are totally bearable. The nonfat, sugar free vanilla latte and chocolate croissant I get about three times a week are the highlight of my morning. Although I've never stayed in the cafe for any length of time, it seems like a good spot to hold an informal meeting, study group or just have a quiet read. Saw Mark Suppelsa (WGN news anchor) in here the Monday after the Super Bowl. He was decked out in sweats, a Green Bay sweatshirt and Green Bay slippers...and he looked HOT! (Despite all the GB stuff. Blech.)

  • Steven N.

Received a personal email from Mallory, the manager at this location, regarding an explanation as to why they didn't have beans for purchase. Response from corporate and this location came right away, proving that their customer service is second to none. The coffee - and the service - cannot be beat. Love Peet's.

Very impressed. By pure chance I had a temp job doing surveys there over a weekend, and it is a heck of a place. Some things I know about it impress me further but I can't really say for their own confidentiality, but lets say you'd be surprised who works there (more than you would suspect, a bigtime chicago rockstar lol). The coffee, amazing. Maybe it was just my opinions of the people and the style but I am not a coffee guy at all, I really avoid the stuff, but it was good. Extremely good. Also, they DO have wifi, lots of people surf while they are there. As someone mentioned in a comment (and I neglected to mention), the coffee is strong. It is definitely good and worth a checking out, seriously. Like stated above I don't care for coffee but honestly the best I've ever had.

  • Zach G.

I'm revising my review because even after writing my previous one I continued to go to Peet's, maybe they take these reviews to heart, or I was just catching them at a bad time, but I haven't noticed the problems I was originally having anymore. The tea consistently tastes fresh, the side counter isn't a mess, and it has been fairly quick service. Also, I was feeling a little sick one day so I decided to get a hot tea, although Black Tea is my choice drink, I really don't know any types or variations besides just calling it black, I believe the guy's name was Michael, but he recommended a great English tea that made me feel loads better.

    (5)
  • John F.

The coffee is very good. Lattes have been consistently tasty. Prices are reasonable (similar to Starbucks) and worth it for the quality (much better than Starbucks). The employees are kind of "alternative." Regardless they have always been competent and friendly. The warehouse-like atmosphere leaves something to be desired. High ceilings and a concrete floor make for a lot of echo and noise when baristas are using machines. It's usually too cold too. Bottom line: I come here often but tend to not stay for long. NB: One hour free wifi with purchase.

One of my favorite study spots as an undergraduate. Less sceney than Unicorn, more roomy than Starbucks, and devoid of the high schoolers who flock to Kafein. The coffee, espresso, and tea (both hot and iced) are great and there's ample window seating. 1 star off for relatively early closing times and lack of outdoor seating during the summer.

I get grief from some of my friends for not frequenting the "local" shops in downtown Evanston. When I think of a local neighborhood store, Peet's is the one I think of. When you go in it is warm & welcoming. The staff is friendly, remember your name and drink and have taken time to introduce me to new items. I admit it, I am a coffee snob, I am one of those people that will pass up a mediocre cup of coffee and just have water. I can tell you I never pass up Peet's. I only brew it at home and if I am going out for coffee only stop there. My suggestion to any coffee house that wants to be the neighborhood place spend time at Peet's they are the real deal. Great product, wonderful atmosphere and the best staff anywhere!

  • Joshua N.

Not a particularly comfortable coffee shop to relax in, but they do have a terrific staff. They're always friendly and usually make great lattes. The espresso is not the best, but totally passable and definitely a step up from what you get at most other chains. I've never waited long for a drink, but I haven't been here in the AM. The ordering counter is a little confusing because it runs the entire length of the shop and there are staffers running around everywhere behind it. You'll figure it out though. I believe in you.

Back when I was single and bored, I spent a lot of time in Evanston and Peet's in particular. Back then the coffee had always been really good, the cafe cute and comfortable and the staff very friendly and cool. Having been back recently I am glad to see nothing has changed. If you like your coffee strong, fresh and fabulous, you need to check out Peet's!

This place is delicious! I've been to a few in San Francisco and had no idea that they had Peet's in Chicago. You can really taste the flavors in their lattes and it's not overly sweet like Starbucks. I will definitely be coming here again!

I am such a fan of Peet's. Yes, it's a chain -- but they have their hearts in the right place, introducing fine coffee and tea and espresso drinks to Americans. The staff is incredibly knowledgeable (I have inside sources), and the barista training program lasts two months -- yup, that's right: you won't receive an espresso drink here made by unskilled hands. I wish all coffeeshops adhered to their standards -- grinding the espresso freshly for each shot; not exposing the shot for more than ten seconds -- and their steamed milk is practically unparalled. I stick to soy milk as a general rule, which can be hard to steam, resulting in little foam and an unpleasant taste. The soy they use at Peet's is specially formulated to be steamed, and the drinks taste creamy and fresh with a perfect micro foam. I do know that they don't manually tamp each shot, but being a chain requires a level of consistency, and besides, the store can get busy. I just had a latte macchiato there today, and could certainly go for another one right about now. Oh, and I can't get enough of the Matcha Green Tea Freddos... Even though the coffeeshop can get freezing (they won't raise the air conditioning above 73 degrees, and drinking a blended/iced drink is an obvious recipe for disaster) I simply can't resist a Matcha Green Tea Freddo... (oh, AND their whipped cream is made only of cream and simple syrup...no high fructose corn syrup here!!) :D In conclusion: Yes, they're corporate, but they blow Starbucks straight out of the water.

very friendly and funky staff, the coffee shop itself is always full of international students and always busy!! the coffee is very strong and will def do justice if you are in need of serious cafein.
