My sister's birthday was a few weeks ago, so I decided to treat her out to dinner & a play. The play that we ended up seeing was in a theater in Edgewater. She had a taste for sushi afterwards, so we decided on visiting Coast after hearing rave reviews from a trusted friend. Her rave review was for the Bucktown location of this place, but we decided to go up to the Evanston location of this restaurant since it was closer to where we were at. To me, this place looks like a typical sushi restaurant. Sushi bar was located in a central area of the place, with four guys behind it prepping/making rolls. My sis ordered a bunch of things: edamame (her old standby in Japanese restaurants), fried scallops (next to catfish, this is probably my second favorite dish in the fish family) & seaweed salad. The main course is where things got interesting. She ended up ordering the Po' Boy Maki (white fish tempura, white fish tempura, unagi, cream cheese, masago, spicy sauce, scallion, avocado, tempura crumb & eel sauce). I got the King Crab Maki (king crab, scallion in spicy mayo with tempura crumb, red tobiko) YUM. Both of these rolls were different & delicious. The Po Boy was kind of what I expected; the roll was spicy with a bit of a kick to it. The King Crab was nice with a lot of flavor. Service was great and food time from kitchen to table was good. What stood out to me was the location of the restaurant itself; off the main street almost by a residential area. Seemed like a very "neighborhoody" place. If the night wasn't that cold we would have eaten out in the large patio area. Hopefully soon.

Excellent date place. Byob and it is encouraged to open up your bottle in the lobby area. Great food and the staff is friendly. I brought lots of dates over the years here and even had a chance at one of the waitresses after dinner (dessert portion of the date). Recommend it to anyone who has the adventurous side to them.

This place is literally so expensive. We got two rolls of sushi and edamame and the total came to be $30.55. The sushi rolls came in four pieces - 8 pieces total. $30. We're broke college students and the sushi tasted horrible. Don't go here

We heard Coast had ramen, and decided to give it a try. It rivals the ramen at Slurping Turtle and Mitsuwa. Very, very good. They didn't have many options -- just one ramen offering on the menu, but it was excellent. I would say it's better than Slurping Turtle. The ramen is a little spicy, which seemed unusual, but delicious. Our daughter had tamago, which was fine. Service was sweet and cheery.

If it weren't for the gyoza and tempura seaweed, this review would be 3 stars. The sauces for the free tempura seaweed appetizer were delicious and I loved the gyoza. My ginger beer and starters were good but I was not very impressed by the sushi. It was extremely chewy and difficult to swallow. A lot of the pieces are too big and I am not sure if the seaweed or fish is chewier. I think there are much better places for sushi. However the atmosphere was cute and we had a nice time. The service was also good.

This place has delicious sushi!!! It is definitely on the pricey side, but the fish is fresh and super yummy. They have some unique rolls and great cocktails. If you're looking for a great sushi place in the Evanston area, this is the place to go.

To be clear, I would would absolutely eat here again, and the quality of the fish is not in question. However, a restaurant has to do at least something special to get 4 stars, and has to knock me out of the park for 5. Here, the food was very expensive - we wound up spending 120 for 2...that's a lot of money considering I can do the same at another sushi restaurant for 80. We were dining in a group of 9 and we split the bill. We did accommodate one couple of the 9 who didn't drink nor eat any of the 4 apps we ordered and I think they only spent about 40 total. The server was a young woman who clearly didn't know what she was doing; we asked her specific questions about preparations and alcohols, and she really just didn't know. I actually felt kind of bad for her - she should be better trained to understand what goes into sushi and the specials. Our dining companions all enjoyed their food, and again, I'm not really complaining, I'm just saying it's not a stand out.

There seem to be a lot of Coast haters out there, which I kinda understand because I was on the fence myself at some point. Yes, it is expensive, but having been several times at this point I think it's damn good sushi, and food in general. Great fish, and rolls are not overpowered by mayo and whatnot, which is nice. Ambiance is solid. I'm tempted to deduct a star for their insultingly small portion of seaweed salad - it's a dollop - but I'm leaving it at 5 because Coast is not a 3.5 star joint.

We have been coming here for years now. The sushi is consistently very good. Drinks are strong and tasty. Appetizers and deserts are unique and delicious. The service is accommodating and efficient. We will keep coming back!

I have heard good things about Coast Sushi, so I visited there recently. Compared to what I have expected, it wasn't totally as "amazing" and "great". I went there on the weekends. The food came out late. However, the service was good. Our server was attentive and friendly. Most importantly, compared to other sushi places that I went, it wasn't the best.

I've gotten better from Kansaku. I ordered the crunchy spicy tuna roll and it was the furthest thing from spicy, it was actually a little sweet. The staff was kind and our waitress was very professional. Another bummer was the menus, they are paper and were covered in splotches of different colored sauces, not appetizing. If you're skimping on nice menus then at least make sure the paper ones are clean. I asked the waitress for a clean menu and she didn't even flinch or apologize, it was like she was used to being asked that.

Heard good things about this restaurant so we thought we would give it a try. Unfortunately there are a lot of sushi restaurants nowadays so I'm sure competition is tough. The décor of the restaurant is nice and service was pretty good. However, this restaurant is slightly more on the pricey side as sushi restaurants in the suburbs go and I really didn't think the quality of the sushi justified the price. We got the Coast Sushi Special roll which was just not very exciting and was $13 for the roll. The spider crab roll was the best we had and it was $9 for four pieces I believe. All in all for two people with an appetizer, 4 rolls, and one drink, the total bill came to around $60. To me, there are better quality sushi places at better price points in the area.

Great Sashimi but not many roll options. Everything we've had from Coast has been delicious, but you kind of have to know your sushi to pick a good roll. Size and quantity of the rolls have been pretty reasonable, some places give you less. It is on the pricer side of some sushi restaurants but the fish does taste fresh.
(4)Vic L.
Great sushi !!!! Loved this place when it first move into bucktown around 2004ish. ( not sure if same owners or not but E-town c oast is just as good!!) All the rolls are great & the pieces of naguri are big, fresh, & delicious. i would definitely recommend this place if you are in the mood for sushi!!

The food here is consistently good. It's a great place from which to order and pick up, or dine in. The staff members are nice and friendly.
(5)Fred H.
I ordered for to-go late in the night, close to their closing. The reception is polite and helpful; the order is prepared promptly and timely. The flavor is average (i only ordered sushi so I don't know about other dishes), not particular, but as you could expect from all moderate cost sushi place. I will give three stars. Since it's the few restaurants still open till 11 on central st, and the service is polite, I will add one more star to the rating.

We went to Coast for the second time last night for a quiet Sunday evening meal. We had the warm sake for 9.00 which I think is a great deal. We also had the shrimp tempura and edamame as our appetizers. The edamame was cooked perfectly and salted just right. The shrimp tempura is excellent and a definite must for those that want an app. For our rolls, we ordered the spicy tuna, spicy salmon, and wasabi. All were excellent, but if I had to chose between the salmon or tuna, I would get the salmon. I think the décor and lighting is nice and clean in this location. We have never had to wait and it has been relatively quiet when we go. I do wish they had the chocolate dome cake desert at this location. It is amazing! I would choose Coast over Koi for sushi in Evanston.

Coast is a welcome addition to Central Street! We had a party of 5 for dinner on a rainy Saturday evening, no reservations, but we were seated right away since we arrived so early. We had multiple rolls, nigiri, edamame, and chicken teriyaki (for the 4 year old), and everything was wonderful. We especially liked the wasabi roll. The decor is very hip, the service is attentive, the employees are friendly, and we will certainly be back. If not to done in, for carry-out.

Great sushi, soups, friendly staff, full bar, some neat original cocktails, and BYOB. Plus you get 5% off the bill if you pay with cash. Parking is a little limited close by, but you can usually find a spot within 3 to 4 blocks. Metra Central stop on UP North Line is also down the street. Overall a great place for sushi.

Glad this place moved into the neighborhood. It is convenient from our north Evanston home. Atmosphere is nice but kind of stark. Gets loud when there are groups. Lots to choose from on the menu. We had an Angry Salmon appetizer which was tasty but only 3 small pieces for $11. Overall, food is good but not the best value.

Pluses, ambiance and service were nice. Well appointed all the way around, with attractive serving dishes and good plating of food. Our server was attentive and friendly. I don't know what it's like when it's busy though. We went for lunch and the place was completely empty. We had sake, but the bar stocked some expensive and fancy Japanese whiskey, which I find impressive. So downsides. I had ramen. The broth was tasty, probably home made, but overall the dish was utterly "meh". Nothing in it but a small handful of spinach and jalapeno pepper, which was a jarring flavor to find in ramen imo and three slices of shitake. I had asked for tofu instead of pork, and they breaded and fried it, which ended up being a horrible flavor tragedy. The tofu, obviously not from Phoenix Bean because bland as hell, just tasted fried. Which, thanks to the sloughing off of the breading in the soup, ended up with the entire soup just tasting fried by the time I got to the bottom of the bowl. I wouldn't have even necessarily objected to crispy fried tofu, but breading anything that's going to sit in soup is just a bad plan. That's why whenever you get soup with tempura involved, it's usually on the side, for you to dip when you're ready. So ramen is fail. Better by far to be found at Sunshine and Renga te. Even Sea Ranch has better ramen actually, and (no judgement, I eat the hell out of their ramen) they're getting their broth out of a box. On to the maki. It was unremarkable. Plenty of avocado in the avocado maki, little thin on the eel in the unagi maki, but overall no issues with it. The wasabi was fail though. No heat at all and oddly sweet. No clue wtf with that. My dining companion had the Boatmans Special, which he found perfectly satisfying, though he did say everything tasted a little on the sweet side. Add some edamame (which they managed just fine), one order of mochi (likely out of a box, no issues), and two hot sakes and the bill came to a staggering $80 for two people at lunch hour. Waaaaat?!?! Alas, like most of the food in Evanston, expensive and underwhelming. I want so much more from you Evanston. Why do you suck? You want to be Andersonville but you're just...not even. This place caters to people that have never actually had Japanese food. Because I have, I was deeply disappointed. But, we had a gift card, so no real loss. I'd go back if someone else was paying for it, but never on my own dime.

Visited Coast Sushi for lunch, as we were in the neighborhood. The crunchy spicy tuna roll and the spider roll were good; not the best I've ever had, but good. It was a little pricey for the amount of food. My partner ordered a bowl of udon with chicken and it was fantastic! Our server was friendly, as were the sushi chefs.

We sat outside on this beautiful night. Started with the wasabi shumai & the crunchy spicy tuna roll. Tuna was very fresh. Shumai had amazing flavor. Entrees were teriyaki salmon and chicken yakisoba. Salmon was delicious. Noodles had just the right amount of chew. My only complaint was that it took a while to get my water glass refilled. Will definitely be back and order the same dinner.

UNBELIEVABLY GOOD. This space has gone through several transformations over the past couple of years - perhaps due to the fact that it's hard to spot from Central St, despite being just half a block north. Hopefully Coast will develop a sufficient following that it's around for a long time. The decor is modern and sleek, the outdoor seating is great (especially late-night in the summer), and the food is incredible and interesting. I always think sushi is expensive, but relatively-speaking the menu here is very reasonable for the quality. My only beef is that there's no affordable cold sake option (cheapest is a $28 bottle), but for how good it is I'll suck it up and drink the hot stuff.

While the food at Coast is decent quality, the service is awful and I will not return. I arrived to pick up an order I placed online- even though I had an email confirmation of the order, they had no record of it. They weren't particularly apologetic and I waited 20 minutes. Then they told me they forgot to charge me for adding cucumber to a maki and asked me to pay $2.17 in addition to the amount I already paid on my credit card! Terrible customer service
(1)Yelana B.
Came here with our three children and though the appetizers were tasty, the service was terrible. Waited forever for simple things. Maybe if the situation was handled differently, I would go back. But because of apathetic attitude, will not return. Maybe I will do take out only but don't think I will be dining in again. TERRIBLE SERVICE

In short, Coast Sushi is a mediocre, bland, expensive disappointment. I don't recommend the maki unless you enjoy bland fish and a lot of overly sweet rice. It's almost like when they were mixing the rice, they added too much vinegar and instead of adding more rice to correct it, they added more sugar. Or maybe they just like sweet rice at Coast. Whatever the reason, it doesn't justify the completely tasteless fish. Did they soak it in water overnight or something? In all my life, I have never had completely tasteless fish, how is this possible? If I had to look on the bright side, I guess it's good that it wasn't fishy and the texture was right. Maybe if I had been able to stuff my face with copious amounts of bland sushi, things would have ended better, but instead all I got was itsy bitsy portions. So it feels like I paid a lot of money for some sweet sushi rice... awesome! And while I'm at it, I'd like to point out that tempura is supposed to be a light flour batter, so please leave the panko out. I was so completely underwhelmed that I won't be going back to try the sashimi or nigiri, it's just not worth it.

Wonderful! This is our new favorite neighborhood sushi place. Dining al fresco on their heated porch is a great midweek treat.

$24 for 8 pcs of mediocre sushi and a cup of udon soup. With tofu. I'm pretty sure this is the most uneconomical sushi I had ever had. We had a carry out order of one spider roll, one spicy salmon roll, and one tofu soup that had "udon" in the ingredient list. The ambience wasn't bad, and we got there about 15 min before they were closing. When we checked the food back at home it was just sad how little we got for what we paid for. The udon soup was the most disappointing with an over salted soup base and 3 pieces of udon floating in a 8 oz styrofoam cup. The spicy salmon was good, but meager in portion size. Nothing spectacular about the spider roll ... The thing is fried anyways and hard to mess up. If I were to give a yearbook description about this place it would be "pretentious, overpriced, undersized". It would win an accolade for "the most likely to leave guests hungry".

Since moving out of the city, my wife & i have been to the Evanston Coast a few times. The sushi is always reliable (although i think that the rolls have gotten a bit smaller over the years) and the wait staff is always friendly. I like the open feeling of the restaurant, and we even sat outside on the patio when waiting for a table and had a drink which is nice. Although not a full BYOB as the Bucktown location, you can bring you're own wine/drinks, but make sure they clarify the Corkage fee's upfront.... if you're with 2 people its not bad, but i think with larger people (per Bottle & per person) its get kinda pricy.

What a great surprise! This place exceeded all our expectations and we can hardly wait to come back. We ordered the dressed sashimi plate - at the recommendation of our terrific and super attentive waiter. It was delicious and super fresh. An excellent choice! We ordered a seaweed salad, miso soups, and a couple of veggie maki rolls (spicy sweet potato, shiitake tempura, avocado and asparagus), and a couple of cocktails (a martini for me and a signature lemongrass drink for my bride... Tasty!). The service was warm and welcoming - even for our late Sunday evening arrival (almost 9:30p). I'm looking forward to our return, or take out. Thanks for such a great experience.

My taste buds went "KA-POW!" at Coast Sushi! Don't expect average sushi here -- the quality of the fish was excellent. Try the signature sashimi. Presentation, atmosphere (modern/sleek), and service were excellent. Also, it's a great location for both city and suburban dwellers since Evanston in a good in-between. Can't wait to go back!

I wanted to take my gf out to someplace fancy the other night, and Coast was just the place for us. We got there, the service was great, the food was delicious, and we both left happy. We got the sushi sampler and it was all good - the miso soup was great and the fish tasted soft and fresh. I will say, though, that it wasn't quite enough food for what we paid. I'm pretty skinny, but even I left feeling hungry. Good thing we had some money left over for coffee and dessert at another local spot nearby!

Ate here for the first time and it was the first day they got their liquor license--thank God cuz I had a real shitty day and was dying for a stiff Martini. Two Goose Martinis please! As for the sushi-- I thought it was pretty good, fresh, and some were well priced although some were a bit expensive so I guess you need to be a bit discerning here. For example we got an app of 4 dumplings and it was $17 bucks Yikes, what were we thinking?? On the other hand the Miso soup was only $2 and the picky Miso ( w jalapeño) only $2.50--delish! The edame app was overlooked as the pod skins tore in your mouth-- disappointing. All and all, a great addition to the hood and would definitely make this a regular place to go.

First of all - I am not a sushi snob by any means but I definitely enjoy large pieces of fish and delicious sushi rolls. My boyfriend and I checked out this place because we had heard great things about Coast in Bucktown. We really enjoyed it. It seemed well priced to me, especially with the current BYOB option. I think they are trying to get their liquor license so that might change things eventually. We got 5 rolls - 1 was recommended to us by the server and the rest were more general rolls. We enjoyed them all. We also got edamame. It actually seemed kind of overcooked. Overall it was a really nice meal and I am glad to see this place open in Evanston!
(4)Susan D.
Excellent sushi! We had it delivered and it arrived within 20 minutes, packaged very well in individual containers. Chopsticks, soy sauce & plenty of ginger & wasabi included. Fish was fresh & so good, we got 5 different rolls & tuna tartare. Gomae was excellent as well. My new favorite sushi in Evanston. So glad they moved into the neighborhood & I'm certain they will do very well.. Can't wait to try some new rolls.
(4)Stephanie S.
So.... I really do not mean to be rude and I really really wanted to like this restaurant because it is right in my neighborhood and I like supporting local businesses. However, the sushi was pretty bad. The unagi cucumber roll was absolutely vile with a disgusting liquid on top- not the usual yummy sauce like in other sushi restaurants. The salad was vile and the other sushi we got was also equally as terrible. I kept thinking it would taste better if I kept eating more, but it just was bad. Sorry for the negative review, but I am just being honest about our experience there.
(1)Jason W.
This is the worst sushi I've ever had! Worst ! Not even bad! It's unreasonably priced and the food tastes cheap! The quantity and quality of the fish is far from satisfactory! I will never ever come back! No!
