We ordered sandwiches for lunch for our work one day. They were awesome!! Generous portions and very flavorful!! Can't wait to go back, next time we will eat in!

When I don't bring lunch to work and am in the mood for a delicious sandwich, In the Neighborhood is my go-to spot. All of the sandwiches I've tried have been delicious. The flavor combinations just work. Take the Ellis, for instance. Something about the caramelized onions combined with the saltiness of the pretzel roll just makes the sandwich. And on the Route 31, chicken & pepperoni combined with ranch dressing and hot sauce (among other ingredients) is an awesome combination, and I don't even really like ranch. The sandwiches are between $8 and $9, which one might argue is pricey for a sandwich. But that is comparable to what you'd pay at Panera and Jimmy John's, and the sandwiches are bigger here. Also, I do not make "nom nom nom" noises when I eat sandwiches from Panera or Jimmy John's, like I do when I eat sandwiches from In The Neighborhood. The main chef (owner?) is super friendly and clearly loves what he does. Kudos.

Love love love!! Jeff is a sandwich architectural genius! Every sandwich comes with the highest quality ingredients, perfectly stacked to keep the integrity of those ingredients. What I mean is that lettuce on his sandwiches remains cold while the cheese is melted and all the other ingredients are perfectly distributed so each bite is a perfect blend of the flavors for the particular sandwich you chose. It's a masterpeice! Jeff also gives back to the community and has made this neighborhood deli, just that; a part of the neighborhood and the community and a lovely intimate place to have a sandwich.

By far the best deli in Elgin! Discovered with my co-workers a few weeks ago we have been back diligently every Thursday (free drink day!) since. I always order the S.E. Storm, as I love the spice. Other group favorite are the Boca Jump for those who like their sandwiches slightly acidic (think pickled vegetables) or the Clocktower for those that like sandwiches almost as good as the S.E. Storm. The staff is friendly and the space is clean, although the restaurant is small and the service is not the speediest. Not a place for large groups, but perfect for a small group at lunch time.

Place is amazing . Great variety . Good quality meats . Will be going there often !

I have been here a few times and like this place! Good variety of sammies! Everything is made on the spot, so don't expect a super quick McD's experience; also not super slow --just right given the food quality. I accidentally ordered takeout through the Elgin location and then showed up at the Dundee location. They called the Elgin location and whipped up my order right away, even though I had paid via phone/credit card already. I wish they had fresh cut French fries ;P They only have bagged chips. Also, one time I went there and they were out of tomatoes, which I love, and is included in a lot of their sammies. I'll keep going :) Try the portobello sammie...forget what it's called.

This place also has a location in East Dundee now, but I haven't been to it yet. I've been meaning to check it out, though! Anyway, my boyfriend and I stopped in for a couple of sandwiches. Friendly staff, and my god... The sandwiches were delicious! I got a pretzel bread sandwich with turkey... It was more complex than that, but I can't remember the name of it. Half of it filled me up. The portions here are nice and big. Give them a try.

This place is so good it makes me want to punch a kitten. Best sandwiches I've had, fun staff, good prices, and quiet comfortable place. I recommend the South Elgin Storm.

I loved the Elgin theme of the restaurant and the variety of sandwiches. I have had a few different sandwiches there. Each of them have been good but nothing overly special. Also, it seems to take forever to get your food. I have called ahead a pick up order of 8 sandwiches for a half an hour pick up time later. When we arrived, only half of our order was ready and the place was empty. I would recommend the Larkin Center, the Lowrie and the Abbott. Those were my three favorites. Each time we have tried to order the Hemmens, they have been out of pulled pork. I do think this place is very reasonably priced. I also liked the freshness of ingredients. All in all, it's a decent lunch spot.

Place is very small..the chairs are half broken..the menu is dis organized and dis proportioned...the staff isn't very knowledgable about their own products..also aren't very hospitable (had to find my own cups for drinks also staff didn't warn me the fountain drinks were out of service) the sandwich was good but wasn't traditional , for instance the Reuben sandwich the corned beef was cold when it should have been hot, in another sandwich the avocado tasted frozen or box made..wasn't fresh, very small selection of canned drinks there's no bottled root beer or craft soda like epic deli or even potbellys have..everything drink wise is out of service even the tea machine..also the menu needs to be re done everything is pretty much the same with only small variations..also they use an iPad for credit card purchases which is very sketchy and not secure, they need a more sophisticated machine for the cards..I mean I'm glad this neighborhood has a place like this..but if this place is going to stay for the long haul they need to make some major adjustments..will I return again? Maybe once more...I mean the sandwich wasn't bad at all, wasn't great either! The broccoli cheddar soup was good..let's see I will return again one day..I hope to see some improvements made prior to my return, also some daily specials..it's a little expensive for the products they serve! Wish these guys the best! But it costs to be the boss!! Take notes

Well today was the second time I went there to get some lunch and I really like this place. All the sandwiches are named after something in Elgin which I think is really cool. The sandwiches are really good and the soups are amazing. I have had the wedding soup and the beefy mushroom and I just love them. As for the sandwiches, I have gotten the Boca Jump, and I really liked that one, today I had the Ill. Park and it was good, but was not that impressed with it. The chicken was kind of bland. Staff was very friendly and service was pretty quick. I would say that if you are in the mood for a deli sandwich, but want something a little different, check this place out.

Got the tomato basil soup with a "clock tower" sandwich (grilled chicken, chipotle mayo, bacon, lettuce, tomato, cheese on a pretzel roll). Soup was good, sandwich was worth 5 stars. Only reason I take a star off is half of the sodas were out of order and really wasn't a big fan of the pickle. I like mine crunchy and not chewy. Either way I would definitely go back.

  • Matt V.

What a gem! I had the Corned Beef and potato, cheddar and sausage soup. If there was a sixth star, I'd have it clicked. Go there if you want to eat great food for lunch. The staff is wonderful as well. It was my first trip in today, and tomorrow will be the second...

Courteous and friendly staff. I've already tried 5 different sandwiches, and that's just breaking the surface with over 30 of them on the menu board. Each one has been as good or better than expected. I don't live in Elgin but I come in about twice a month. When I do come into town, I always stop in for a great sandwich. It's a great stop for lunch during the week because they're only open till 5 M-F

First, let me start off by saying that the man making the sandwiches, whom I assume was Jeff, was very friendly and cordial. From there, it went downhill really fast! The old lady with the long gray hair at the register was rude and cold. It was my first time there, so I had a few questions. She just pointed to the menu board on the wall and curtly said, "Those are the sandwiches" Jeff overheard me asking her questions and then answered my questions and was very nice. He was friendly and helpful. I decided on a sandwich and ordered it. After I paid for it, I noticed that on Wednesday it was "Buy one, get one 1/2 off" Since it was Wednesday, I asked the lady at the counter about this and she snapped, "You already paid for your sandwich, so you can't get the special" She was so nasty and rude, I could not believe it. I would not be surprised to receive a response like that from some young kid at McDonald's, but not from someone her age in a small Mom & Pop restaurant... so much for personal service! She really needs to brush up on her customer service skills (or even common courtesy, for that matter!) They really need to get a new person at the counter who knows how to be social and friendly with customers, as she was a rude mess. Maybe she was having a bad day, but she definitely is in the wrong business. Once I got my sandwich I was so disappointed. It was just on regular store bought sliced bread with a very small amount of meat. For $7.99 I would expect more than a small, skimpy sandwich on regular store bought bread. Even Subway and Jimmy John's gives you fresher, homemade bread. It was really a let down as I was hoping that it would be a great find in Elgin. Not so much......... So much for my experience as I will never return to this place, and will share my negative experience with friends and family. My grades for IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD DELI Customer Service - F Quality of Food - D I was hoping this would be a great, fresh, better alternative to Subway or Jimmy John's, but I guess I will stick with Subway and Jimmy John's, as this place is a total waste.

Have never had a bad sandwich ever. Great selection and a very different sandwich place than the chains.

I absolutely love the deli. The staff is very friendly and helpful. I highly recommend the Highland sandwich.

    (5)
  • Shin M.

First off, their menu has soo many different "unique" sandwiches. It's all written on a huge chalkboard. You can select any type of bread you want. I got the Crusader, which was basically an italian sandwich with "special americano sauce." It was kind of spicy but it was pretty good. I kinda wished it was warm and had melted cheese on it. It cost $9 for that sandwich... wish it came with fries or something- even a pickle would have been nice!

Like the variety of sandwiches. Really wish I lived closer, I'd be a regular. Cute décor, good, unique sandwiches. Love these type of delis, so tired of the Subways & Jimmy John's.

Jeff is a great owner and is hands on. It is GREAT people, customer service and of course the sandwiches. The best deli around.

We love this place . Great sandwiches and friendly staff. The owner really gives back to the community in a big way. Always nice to see that. Remember folks, you've got to give back :)

If you are ever in a mood for a deli type sandwich, this is it you must come and check it out. I have been to ITND now for a total of three times with friends and they all seem to like their sandwiches. Not much seating area inside and you can just drive past this small hidden place but, worth stopping by if you are in the neighborhood.

This place is awesome! Great sandwiches and soup! I tried their tomato basil soup and it was delicious! I can't remember the name of the sandwich i ordered, but it was also delicious. There's something for everyone!

I don't get out to Elgin often, but when I do, I would like a place I know I can stop at and grab a decent lunch and not some fast food horror show. When I saw the reviews for the In The Neighborhood Deli I was sure I had stumbled upon my new magical, Elgin lunch spot. The sandwich I ordered, The Kimball, was a Roast Beef and Horseradish Panini, made extremely well. It came with Roast beef, cheddar cheese, caramelized onions, tomato & creamy horseradish sauce on rustic panini bread. All the ingredients in perfect proportion, warmed to the perfect temperature - it was truly a surprising and fantastic sandwich. However, I can't bestow a 5 star rating for the following reason. The menu board led me to believe that all the sandwiches came as a meal for $5.99 (whether this is true or not I can't say, but that's how it read to me). This included chips and a drink. Pretty fair deal if you ask me. Except I was not given chips (not that I needed/wanted them at the time, but if that's part of the deal I should get them) and when I asked if I could sub out an iced coffee in lieu of a pop (same price noted on the menu), the girl at the counter said sure! And then charged me extra. So now a $6 lunch was nearly $9. I hate to quibble over a few dollars but if you are expecting to pay a certain amount, and then get over charged, you are going to be sore about that and it will probably affect your decision to return a second time. Hopefully this was an error and it won't happen again, but if it does, In The Neighborhood is going to be Out of The Running.

Great hang out and the sandwiches are awesome too! I came in by accident just from pure hunger ;) The place is pretty low key but the sandwiches are wowowowooooow!!!!

So happy to have found this place and also a big plus is its locally owned and managed; love supporting local businesses vs. a chain. The sandwiches are a welcome change from chains like Jimmy Johns and Subway. Sandwiches are fresh, made to order, and use awesome ingredients like pesto, avocado, in interesting ways, like pp have said. As an Elgin native, I ADORE the names of the sandwiches too ("The Gail Borden", "The LHS"). You can definitely see that not only does the owner care about the quality of his food, but about the community as well. It is a little pricey but the sandwiches come with chips and a pop. You can sub out your chips for a side of pasta salad or potato salad for a hefty upcharge. While their receipts are signed for on an ipad or other tablet, which is cool, I didn't like that you are asked to tip at the time you pay, tip for what? Maybe the guy bringing you your food 5 steps from the counter? Weird. Also, the place is small, but very homey and cozy and filled with eclectic locally made products like beaded bracelets, art etc. New fave sandwich spot.

With all of elgin's major fast food/restaurant chains it's great to see a local place thriving. The sandwich selection is extremely varied and fresh with a friendly easy-going vibe. All 3 locations have menus unique to their location. Love it!

It's really sad to see the decline of this business over the past couple years. I used to love this place and I would come here all the time but you can tell that there are some issues. When you frequent local places as often as I do its nice to see a consistent staff.. I feel like everytime I walk in there's new people working or training who aren't as friendly or as efficient as the long term staff members. There is one young male with long brown hair (maybe manager) who is always polite and even remembers my order when I come in. I wish the rest of the staff was as interested and polite as he is every time I come in. It's just a shame to see such shifting all the time. I hope you can work out your staffing issues and keep the good employees around.

The part of Elgin near my office is a culinary desert. Working here has inspired me to drag my behind out of bed fifteen minutes early to make my own lunch. In the Neighborhood Deli is a welcomed anomaly. My coworker is into their soups, which I hear are superb (I'm restraining myself from spelling "superb" so it'd be a pun. Just thought you should know that). I'm all about their sandwiches. What distinguish this place from its nearby all-purpose lunch joints, are the ingredients. The first time I went there, I was pleasantly surprised to find interesting toppings like sauerkraut, caramelized onion, or roasted garlic mayo in many wonderfully concocted sandwiches. I took one look at the menu, and I instantly knew I was at a place run by people who care about food. You can't really go wrong with any sandwich here, but my personal favorites are The Abbott (Vienna corned beef, swiss cheese, saurkraut) and St. John (beef, caramelized onion, blue cheese, horseradish cream sauce). For less than $9, you get a gourmet sandwich, a drink, and a bag of chips. I simply can't ask for more from this affordable foodie oasis.

Great locally owned deli in Elgin, IL. Everything on the menu is named after places around town. Doesn't get much more local than that!

IF you are looking for a good sandwich in Elgin, this is the place to go. I dont remember the name, but they have an amazing roast beef sandwich with bleu cheese and horseradish. only gripe is they arent open late, but i wont ding them for that!

Ok to start the sandwich new are bass in street buildings event and people from Elgin. Great concept and idea for sandwiches. Then the combination on the sandwiches great! They are unique and some of them I would never thought it would taste good together but they do, The lady at the counter friendly. Pricing well it is $8 a sandwich a bit high cause u have to buy everything else separate. Maybe if they had combos it might help the price. Took my co workers there and they liked it as well. It is small quaint place just enough for about 15 people. Looks like most is take out.

  • Scott M.

A quaint neighborhood deli with a homey feel. The food is great. The ingredients show that the owner cares more about quality than profit margins. The menu is interesting because many of the items are named after local landmarks or people.

Wonderful new deli in Elgin. Good lunch spot. The sandwiches can all be grilled/heated/steamed like a panini. Each sandwich is named after different schools in town, a cute touch. I'm a big fan of the Lowrie, it's served on a pretzel roll! If you've got time to relax and enjoy a sandwich, eat outside! They have a cute patio in the back of the building with nice tables and umbrellas to avoid the sun, the inside is somewhat small-ish. Super nice owner, glad this place took Dominos spot!

  • Katie W.

Love their sandwiches and love that they are all named after Elgin landmarks - what a cool idea! The owner and staff are very friendly. I usually get my sandwich to go at lunch time, but they do also have a few small tables for people who wish to eat in. Overall, a great place for lunch!

  • James H.

If you are looking for a great sandwich or salad in Elgin this is the place! A bit pricey, but the quality of ingredients and the warm feeling in the place justifies the price :) Also, they make "real" paninis ... definitely a plus!

  • Brandon C.

The staff was incredibly friendly here. The owner even took the time out of his busy day to come introduce himself and say hello. I can't say enough good things about this restaurant. I truly wish they had a place like this near where I live. Delicious sandwiches and an active community involvement. Any place that is taking a portion of what they make on every sandwich they sell and turning it around into donations for non-profit organizations is a business that is doing things right in my book. It's a restaurant with great food and a great heart!

Elgin's best kept secret. My brother introduced me to this place a few years ago and I have been going back ever since. I never bring "outsiders" (i.e. chicago) people here because they will want to keep coming out to "visit" me instead of me visiting them. As a self professed "foodie", I have run the gamut of restaurants and Elgin has very few quality places. This is one of the few. The sandwiches, soups and salads are fresh. I have even had their catering that was out of the park. These guys know how to make regular deli food a treat for the senses. My favorite sandwich is the St. John but honestly, I haven't had a bad one yet. Their deli salads are different everytime I go in and don't be afraid to ask if they have another just made one behind the counter. Considering I head to Chicago to get decent food, the pricing at ITN is cheap, cheap, cheap! Seriously, the most expensive thing on the menu is $9 and these are gourmet sandwiches. I've had sandwiches from New York to San Francisco and ITN has beat them all in terms of paying for what you get. If you don't get out to the city or you don't travel much but love those food programs, ITN is Elgin's place to go. Just keep it between us townies though. I hate sharing awesome food places because quality goes down when to many people know about it. ITN deserves Elgin's business and Elgin deserve an awesome place to eat.

Quality ingredients, great variety, personable service - I have never been disappointed by a sandwich here. I like the Kimball - a panini of roast beef with horseradish, and the Abbott - their version of a Reuben. As others have mentioned, all the sandwiches are named after local schools or other Elgin institutions, which is a nice touch. Prices are a buck or two higher than Subway/Jimmy Johns, but portions are very generous and the ingredients are so much better - it's really not a comparison in my book. Only a few small tables for dining in, but when the weather is nice, I like to take mine to go and eat outside at nearby Wing Park - about a mile north. This is the kind of place Elgin needs to support. These guys seem like they want to be a part of the community, and I would definitely recommend giving them a try.

  • Ralph H.

The catering was not much more than the school lunch lady would put together. Sandwiches were on regular bread and there was nothing that denoted this sandwich was from a deli rather than quickly put together by a tired mom. They spent more money on the packaging of the food than the actual food. It might be a fine deli to visit, but the catering is not worth the money.

My sandwich was delicious and I got to eat it outside. I don't think I could possibly give that combination a bad review.

Shhhh!!! don't tell anyone how awesome this place is. It's Elgin's best kept secret. Stumbled upon it by accident when I wanted a ruben sandwich, and OMG! Amazing deli. Sandwiches are made upon ordering, so allow a little time, but so worth the wait. This place belongs in a college town. All the sandwiches are named after elgin landmarks and buildings. Highly recommend the St. John, although I've been several times and never been disappointed. They also offer freash green, pasta and potato salads. Chef Jeff is definately on to something, hope this place survives, because it's a gem.

  • Aaron R.

I really wanted this place to be good. My wife had the $5 egg salad sandwich (a la carte), which the chef pulled the bread right out of the plastic bag (from Jewel? Aldi?). C'mon, even Subway makes their own bread! So does Quizno's, Jimmy John's, Panera, etc. For a $5 sandwich, I should not get bread from Aldi's. My sandwich was the Reuben for $6.75. For that price, there are no chips, pickle, or anything else. It was supposed to be on marble rye, but I don't think Aldi's has that, so they gave it to me on plain rye. And he toasted it on a George Foreman. It was okay, but definitely not worth $6.75. The restaurant has lots of overpriced items for sale on shelves lining the walls, like a tiny jar of cheese dip for $5. I think they are trying to be a trendy little neighborhood shop, but there is nothing there to justify the high prices. If this restaurant is going to last, I hope they start making their own bread, and focus on quality. I don't mind paying a premium, but there has to be quality to back it up.

I thought the food was pretty good if you're looking for something that's not fried but it might be just a tad pricey for what it is. Also I was a little confused when I went inside... one area resembles a small deli, right next to an area that looked like a day care center, right next to a gift basket store... hmmm.. what's that about? But again, if you're looking for something for lunch that isn't fried, I'd recommend it.
