Not a bad place to have a decent breakfast. You get a lot for your money. I have had a combo of pancakes and fried eggs. It was a lot of food.

If you want a decent breakfast in a decent "mom & pop" setting, at a very good price, this is the place to go. I had Eggs Florentine for less than $6 - total for two of us including coffee/tea was about $13 and I call that a deal.

The worst place to eat. They to not care about the customer, the waitress would rather stand there talking with each other. Went there and walked out after 15 minutes of no one coming to the table. They were not crowded only 3 other tables were filled NEVER AGAIN

Fantastic breakfast options! I Yelped around Elgin, IL for some good breakfast options. This place had some great reviews so why not?! The breakfast options were seemingly endless as well as inexpensive. I tried to test the other reviews about bottomless coffee and I can confirm its true! I never had to ask for more coffee, it was always refilled before I knew it. Everybody enjoyed their meal and praised me for my yelp-inspired restaurant recommendation. Next time I go back to Elgin, I plan to stop here for a legit breakfast.

The smallish storefront space and low-key appearance do not do justice to Golden Skillet's charm as a nice neighborhood restaurant with tasty food and welcoming service. Though they do not offer much in the "dinner" category, they are a sure-fire place to get a fantastic breakfast, or a sandwich 'n' soup if you're in a lunch mood. My wife and I frequent GS because of their good food and terrific prices. Servers are always attentive (we rarely see the bottom of our coffee cups until we throw in the towel) and friendly, and we always feel like they appreciate our business. Though we generally stick with the same few items (yes, we can be a bit boring in our menu choices), they are consistently delicious. My wife likes her eggs criminally well done, so we have had to send her eggs back a couple times - I'm sure because the cook recognizes the injustice he is being asked to commit :) . However, the staff always seem eager to correct what is not really a mistake on their part, simply an underestimation of my wife's egg-related depravity. I better hope that she doesn't read this.... For breakfast, I usually go for an omelet, while my wife loves the chorizo and eggs - she's Mexican, so if she says it's good, it's good! For lunch, our mutual favorite is hands down the Chicken Philly sandwich with a cup of the soup of the day. Be sure to check out their daily specials on the wall as well! For great food and great service at a great price, The Golden Skillet is a great choice! And, mi amor, if you're reading this, TE AMO!

Nice divey breakfast spot. Server was attentive and the value for what you get is spot on. If you like to get your carb and salt fix on in the morning go with the #4. My poached eggs were cooked perfectly and the amount of ham steak it came with was thick, tasty and filling!

On a long drive from Indianapolis to Madison we decided to stop in Elgin and take a chance on the Golden Skillet for lunch (thanks to its high kudos on Yelp). Though it was a bit off the beaten track (about 5 miles from I-90), it was well worth the trek. The restaurant is located in a small strip mall, and stepping in the door was like stepping back into the 60's. We were greeted as we walked in, and our friendly waitress understood our need for a rest room before we could sit down for lunch. I chose a BLT Club, which came with soup (DELECTIBLE homemade pea soup) or salad (can't speak to that). Jerry chose a meat loaf sandwich with potatoes and gravy. We both decided the soup alone was well worth the off-highway trek, but we were both impressed with our meals. I don't get better food at home, and Jerry's a great cook. My BLT had fat slices of tomato and lots of crispy bacon, and it came with crispy, delicious fries. Jerry's meal was made up of two thick, piping hot slices of meat loaf (heated on the grill) and REAL mashed potatoes with a savory gravy. We were stuffed to the gills and happy as clams (pardon the aquatic acclaims). Looks like we'll only need a snack at dinner time. Oh, hooray!

To be honest, this place is not really 4 stars, but it is definitely more than 3 stars, so I am going to play nice for two reasons. One, the service here is outstanding. Not overbearing, not neglectful. Just the right amount of attention given. I really like that. Two, the Country Fried Steak is simply the best around. I don't know what they do differently, but its just got a great buttery crispy breading to it. Add to it the tender steak inside, and it is near perfect. When I am craving CFS, this is my place! Give it a try!

Very good service. Large portions for the money. Exceptional biscuits and gravy! They were not very busy when I was there, 7:30 AM on a Sunday.

We stopped here after spending the night in Elgin on our way home from a road trip. Pretty much just looked up the closest breakfast place, and Golden Skillet came up, with good reviews, so we decided to check it out. It's in a residential area and located in a little strip mall. The place isn't fancy or new - but it definitely has a certain charm. It's small, and it was busy, but we got a table right away. We were greeted instantly and got offered something to drink while we looked over the menu. I ended up ordering the "eye opener" skillet - a massive serving of 3 eggs, hash browns, corned beef hash, cheese, peppers and onions all in a skillet, with toast on the side (could have gotten pancakes instead, and regretted that decision immediately when I saw how good they looked). My fiancé got the French toast with sausage and eggs and there was not even a crumb left on his plate after we were done. I highly recommend stopping here if you want a good breakfast!

Tried this place for the first time with my 62 year old (ornery) dad and 9 year old (picky) son. All of us were VERY satisfied! The server was kind and efficient, the corned beef hash was crispy, and the pancakes were delicious. My son said that the fries were the best (and he is definitely a french fry expert). The prices were reasonable and the space is cozy. I will be eating here again.

Never had a bad meal here. Nice and cozy! Def a spot where the regulars go. Fast and so CHEAP. 3-egg skillets and 4-egg omelets, you're set for the rest of the day! Have also has sandwiches for lunch, the fries are awesome. Best breakfast place in the area.

Our favorite breakfast spot in Elgin. Yes, I am giving this five stars. Breakfast is breakfast: it does not require ridiculously obsequious Michelin-quality service. It does not require gold leaf decorated eggs. You will be seated closely to your neighbors. That is fine. All that is required is a comfy, cozy place to sit, simple but well prepared food, and attentive service. You get all of these here. The prices are extremely reasonable. And it has great community warmth and spirit.

Take this from someone who had frequented almost every diner in Elgin multiple times, this is the place. The food is fast, cheap, and always HOT! My friends and I have a Sunday breakfast club that used to rotate among several places in Elgin. Now we go here every single week. If you're there on a Sunday morning or early afternoon, look for the large obnoxious bunch of "Gentlemen" and I'll be there. For breakfast, try the "#1" for a bit of everything, or a "#3" for the best pancakes around. For lunch and dinner, get the soup with anything else. The atmosphere is bright and upbeat unlike the depressed slow feeling you get from some diners. Juan the owner will likely come by at least once to make sure everything is flowing smoothly, which it undoubtedly will be.

Delicious food and a convenient location. Didn't order a huge breakfast but was hungry enough for eggs, bacon, hash and wheat toast. The eggs were light and fluffy and the bacon was fried just how I had ordered it. The coffee was very good and was always filled promptly and politely. Despite filling up and being slightly noisy, the experience was nice and I'd definitely be back for a hearty breakfast and friendly service.

I have lived in Elgin my whole life, and I never ate here. I decided to take my boys out for breakfast before school. When we arrived, the restaurant looked like it might need a update. It felt like one of those restaurants when you're on a road trip. May I add I'm is a big fan of those restaurants. You can tell they care more about their food then there look. Our waitress was Cheryl; she was very sweet to our boys. You can tell she worked there for a long time because she knows a lot of the guest by name. I love that!! For someone to take the time to get to know your regular guest is wonderful. Our food was yummy, and the price was cheap. I must say the coffee was one of the best coffee's I had in a long time. The only down fall was it's not open late. I will still come back even if it's just for the coffee

This place is all about quantity. Two people can eat off one meal and still walk away full. Cheap prices, friendly staff. Sadly the quality was lacking. My farm fresh skillet was loaded with canned and frozen veggies. They even put frozen broccoli on the skillet. That was just plain nasty.

Golden Skillet is an unprepossessing, little place. When we visited on a Sunday afternoon, it was busy and stayed that way until closing time. Even though they were packed to the gills, the service was attentive and timely. My husband had the chicken fried steak, which came with three eggs, cooked to order, and hash browns. I had a small stack of pecan pancakes, and we ordered the "small" biscuits and gravy to share. The portions were generous, the food was simple and tasty, and the value is excellent. I would love to see this place switch to making their sausage gravy from scratch, and it should have more sausage. It seemed to have been a pre-made concoction, and the little bit of sausage was bland. Don't get me wrong, it was still worth the calories, but I am a bit of a biscuit/gravy snob. My only other gripe is that I have not been able to find any place in the Fox Valley that will cook an over easy or poached egg properly (at any price point, but it is much more forgivable at Golden Skillet prices). We moved to St Charles 18 months ago, and have been on a hunt for new favorite restaurants. We have been sorely disappointed until now. I would much rather have good old-fashioned food at the Golden Skillet, than to pay three times as much for food that is pretentious and falls way short of its hype. We will definitely be going back. And, btw, thanks for serving Pepsi products!

Neighborhood breakfast joint, it's good, simple and what you would expect from any breakfast place. I like to take my out of town friends there before they head back home.

I recently move to USA, and i was looking for place like this! Great food, low prices, very friendly service. Portions are very big, comparing to money you are paying. Went there couple times, tried different things, everything was DELICIOUS! definitely will come back there.! In addition this old fashioned look.. it has its own charm

Food taste good but be prepared to wait to be seated! I called in an order for breakfast and noticed a meal missing when I picked it up. They fixed it but when I came home my plain omlette that I asked to be with egg beaters had been made with regular eggs.

Decent no frills nothing to special diner with fair pricing and pretty bland food. The service was good and portions are just enough.

Food was very good. We had breakfast. amazingly affordable prices. Our particular waitress was easily distracted, therefore, our service was not up to par. we sat on in the room on the right as you enter. It seemed hot and crowded. The room on the left seemed better and not so crowded. We would still highly recommend this place.

We definitely enjoyed our experience at this little local place. The staff was incredibly friendly- definitely my favorite part of the entire place. We came here on a Monday morning, and most of the tables were full which I assume means at least decent food and good service. I found this to be accurate about the entire experience. Our beverages were filled multiple times (coffee and soda), and our waitress checked back frequently. My husband polished off all of his biscuits and gravy, and I enjoyed my eggs, sausage, and pancakes. We would definitely come back to this location to try another meal in the future. A nice neighborhood spot with friendly employees is nice!

Not enough people know about this place! My cousin used to live in the neighborhood, so we would walk down there a lot. CRAZY cheap. At least, it was. Haven't been there in at least a year. Though I think the prices remained low even after it became Golden Skillet (used to be 'The Oak'). Great diner food. I've had both breakfasts and lunches; it's all good.
