Italian Cuisine
The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.
Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.
If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.

Our experience was not good. The mozzarella sticks were low quality and the marinara sauce was like Prego Weren't impressed with the chicken Marsala Staff was friendly

Well, I am back again with an updated review. Tonight I tried the feature appetizer, Bruchetta. Frickin awesome! Soup of the day was minestrone, again, homemade and delicious. Entree was gnocchi basilica. Spot on perfection. 5 stars. Best restaurant in Dixon.

Your meals come in courses! First an appetizer (which is quite large!), the soup, and then your entrees. All of which come with freshly sliced bread. It was amazing. The vodka sauce was amazing with my gnocchi pasta. The jumbo shrimps on the side were great. I enjoyed the decorations. We sat our own private table in the empty restaurant (it was a very early evening on a Tuesday). Lovely floating candle in water and we sat next to the wine storage. The manager/owner came over a couple times to ask how our meal was. When I complimented the cuisine, he invited us for a tour of the downstairs reception area. My partner and I were very impressed. It was fancy dining, and probably a formal dress code but we wore blue jeans and it didn't seem to matter to the other guests and hostesses. Our first time rocked!

Quite possibly my favorite restaurant in Dixon! Relaxing atmosphere and friendly service - The vodka and paesano sauces are both excellent choices for a main dish or as an add on for the side pastas. If the tomato basil soup is available, go that route and you won't be disappointed. In addition to the usual, the owner is always welcoming and friendly. I moved here somewhat recently and am out of town for work the majority of the time. It's nice to have a night out where you remember what a small town is like. He's taken the time to recognize us and make us feel like part of the community inside of just the occasional visitor that I tend to be everywhere else in the vicinity.

Service and food outstanding. The best spinach lasagne I ever had. Good wine selection and great presentation. A nice evening out but a bit pricey.

Dixon is full of surprises. You can't find a single decent cup of coffee anywhere in this town, and as far as I know, there doesn't seem to be a movie theater or a place to go shopping other than Walmart. And yet, here is this cute little restaurant that has great Italian food. Old school Italian American restaurants usually overdo it with the sweetness in sauces, but the sauces here hit just the right note - fragrant, with deep flavors, and you taste herbs more than you taste anything else. The chicken has this interesting smokiness and depth. The gnocchi is dense - I prefer the light pillowy kind, but it's my understanding that dense gnocchi, more like dumplings, are a legitimate gnocchi style, and I did like them. The bar has a coppery tin sheath on top, which excited me. As a Chicagoan strolling west, I was on the prowl for things that would be too expensive for me in Chicago. I had already picked out a chair in St. Charles. I had hoped that maybe they sold that material in Dixon - the waitress didn't know, but they were so awesome that they brought out someone who did know and told me about the building of the piece, which was very nice of them.

Food was very good as usual. Excellent selection of pasta and sauces. The Tuxedo cake for dessert is recommended. Also recommend a reservation on weekends. Weekdays are not so difficult to find a table. As seems my luck with restaurants in this area, I always wait what seems to be a long time for the check at the end of the meal. Just my wife and I. If we were a larger group and were visiting well past the meal I would understand.

We came to Sterling from Chicago to visit my friend. She has been raving about this Italian place in Dixon so of course this is where we came for dinner. I have to say she was right, the food was delicious! For appetizers we got the calamari and the bruschetta, the calamari was good but the bruschetta was great. Then we had the minestrone soup with their fresh, warm rosemary bread - excellent! For entrees my husband got the cheese ravioli with cream/marinara sauce (yes, you can create your own pasta with their many sauces which is so cool) and I got the baked mozzarella topped prosciutto wrapped chicken breast, both were great but that ravioli was the best - and I'm not even that big a fan of ravioli. What really made Basil Tree stand out was how gracious everyone was, from the waitstaff to the host (who was the owner himself!). My friends go to the restaurant often and they were talking to the host about different wines on the list (which is pretty extensive) and happened to mention a Cabernet that they really liked in napa that wasn't on the menu. The owner took down the name of the wine and told them he'll try to track it down and give them a call when they get it, amazing! Now that's five star treatment. Coming from Chicago where the options for great restaurants are endless I have to say Dixon has a true gem.

My colleague and I were in town on business and came to this place based on the yelp 4.5 star rating and lots of good reviews. Let me just say... The food was amazing and the portion was very generous. for the price you pay you couldn't get this high quality food anywhere else. Definitely recommended if you in the area.

The food was fabulous and your staff was exceptional. We drive over 60 miles round trip for the food and atmosphere. Well done!

I grew up in Rock Falls and my wife is from Dixon. We live in Indianapolis, but visit Dixon often. We dined at Basil Tree for my wife's Birthday on October 27, 2014. This restaurant is one of the gems in the Rock River Valley. I lived in Chicago for 20 plus years and have dined at many quality Italian restaurants. This restaurant ranks with the best, food wise. OK, the food...We ordered calamari as an appetizer. Outstanding. We ordered two fettuccine alfredo dishes, one with chicken, the other shrimp. In addition, we ordered penne pasta in a vodka sauce with vegetables and spaghetti/meatballs with meatsauce. All were excellent. Also their dinner salad is excellent. Their italian dressing is a must. Add gorgonzola....killer. We topped off the night with tiramasu with raspberry sauce. Very good. I'm giving them 4 stars only for one reason. When we arrived they asked if we were celebrating anything. We were. My wife's birthday. I assumed when they asked they would do something to recognize it. Nothing. To get a 5 star it must be an ultimate client experience. It fell a little short. One note...they allow you to bring wine in at $15 per bottle. Very fair for this restaurant. So if you bring in a $40 retail bottle, it costs you $55 total. To buy that in a restaurant, it would be $100-130. You can save big $$$'s by doing this. I brought an Orin Swift Papillon. Great compliment to our meal.

Not fabulous, but definitely very good. The options in Dixon are pretty limited, so it's nice that even though there's really nowhere else to go, it's thoroughly enjoyable. The service was good and the kitchen was prompt. Very fresh veggies in my pasta, but I have to say my husband's steak was pretty average. I will definitely try them again, but I will probably stick to the pasta as it was the best of the dishes we tried.

Opted to go to this restaurant based on Trip Advisor reviews. Atmosphere is charming, staff pleasant and attentive, food outstanding! Husband enjoyed his veal parmigiana, I thoroughly enjoyed the fish of the day (lightly crusted tilapia on a bed of spinach, garlic and cherry tomatoes, lemon butter drizzled on top). We live in the Chicago far western suburbs, would consider driving to Dixon again for another dinner at Basil Tree. You will not be disappointed!

Excellent food and service. Most selections are gluten free or can be adjusted to gluten free which is why we love this restaurant.

I have been a fan of this place for quite a while. It is difficult to pass up the lunch buffet's variety but the individual entrees are so wonderful it is nearly impossible for me to make up my mind. Service is as delicious as the food. I generally prefer to dine with my Kindle. Unlike some dining establishments, they offer the same great service (without over doing it) as they do couples or larger groups. It has become a tradition when I am in Dixon for a visit to KSB to stop in for lunch. Takes the sting out of the doctor visit.

Went here on a weeknight date. Very good food and decent service. I had the veal franchese which was fantastic! I would definitely go back.

My husband and I are from a western suburb of Chicago and had the delight of recently dining at the Basil Tree Ristorante. We visited family in Iowa and after finding accolades about this restaurant online, decided to exit I-88 for Dixon and have a 'date night' at the Basil Tree. We were absolutely thrilled with the ambiance, the genuineness/attentiveness of the owner and staff, the excellence in the food (presentation and preparation), the exceptional value and the overall experience at Basil Tree Ristorante! We have eaten at some of the finest Italian restaurants in Chicago, New York and Rome (and plenty of places in between). I also LOVE to cook and obviously eat...so we tell you wholeheartedly that this is a GEM of a restaurant in charming Dixon. If you want great authentic Italian food, priced so reasonably, in a small town atmosphere (really nice people), we HIGHLY recommend the Basil Tree Ristorante. We can't wait to go back!

From the time you walk through the door, until the time you leave, you are treated as a king (or a queen as the case may be) The restaurant is beautifully decorated, clean, and very inviting. The hostess was very nice and sat us very quickly. Our waiter was prompt to come to our table and introduce himself, tell us the specials and explain each one. He took drink orders and gave us some time to look. We still hadn't decided when he brought our drinks, and I needed some help, which he happily gave me. I decided on Pollo Ala Basil Tree. Which is slices of chicken breast cooked in a white wine and lemon sauce and served with manicotti. Both were delicious and served with bread. I would definitely suggest Basil Tree and I will definitely go back.

It's good. The foods pretty yummy. However, the oil for the bread taste like grass. Like seriously you might as well go outside with some bread and pick grass. It's crowded inside, but it's decorated well. The service is nice.

If you stopped someone on the street in Dixon and asked them what the town's nicest restaurant is, chances are you'd hear "Basil Tree!" This is my boyfriend's and my go-to place when we're looking to celebrate or want a great meal. It's a little out of my "average night out" price range, or we'd definitely be there more often. My boyfriend swears by their gnocchi. I love their vodka sauce, but I usuallygo for one of the specials because they never disappoint. The bread is great, the wine list is extensive and the dessert...amazing. The service is also highly professional and very attentive. They also have a banquet room in the basement that I'm eager to try when I have a reason to rent a banquet room!

Always a special treat with authentic Italian cruising from scratch. Superb service and very pleasant ambiance. Definitely give this one try. My best choice for fine dining in Dixon

Lovely food and service.

I discovered this place by sheer chance while in Dixon, and what luck that was. I realize this will all sound like a bogus review, but I don't know how else to say it-- the food is excellent, the portions decent, the prices fair, the atmosphere inviting, and the service wonderful. After coming here once in December, we came back 5 more times in the following few months. I just wish I still had more frequent reasons to be in Dixon, so I could visit more often!

Went here twice for buffet over the summer. I think it has spoiled me for other restaurants, especially Italian. Buffet seems to be an excellent deal, since it is a modest price with a superb experience. 3 main aspects that come to mind are: food, environment, and service all of which I'd put at 5 stars (this is coming from someone who has done his fair share of eating out, but almost never to high end restaurants, and isn't a picky eater). I'd say the service is most noteworthy, about as close to impeccable as you can get. Very professional, attentive, and knowledgeable. When we'd take a trip to the buffet and happen to take a smaller salad plate for the entrees, the guy at the bar would always encourage us to enjoy a big plate :) Food on the buffet was great, 5 dishes plus salad and soup. They keep smallish portions of the entrees out so they can frequently add freshly made. The selection varied between the 2 times we were there which was good. My favs so far: beef tips and mushrooms in brown sauce and cheese ravioli in vodka sauce Environment is near perfect, especially a well done interior. Update 10-2013 I understand they no longer offer the buffet (weekday lunches), which is rather disappointing. However I've been there for dinner on a Sat (twice I think) and it is no less remarkable.

Wow...to find this place by accident was the best thing ever. Food was excellent, wait staff impecable. There were no misses here. Try the gnocchi, it's the best. Not our first time here, and certainly not our last. We brought friends from out of state there for dinner and they couldn't be more satisfied. We love it here...Keep up the good work basil tree.. (There is a waiter there that looks like a young Abraham Lincoln, who is the best!) Ask for him!!

Sweet little Italian family-owned ristorante! LOVE this place, and just wish it was closer to the big city, I think I would want to eat in this place several times a week! Great atmosphere with a family-style touch but still very nice for formal occasions. Took my father here for his 87th birthday, and they treated us VERY well... each dish was prepared individually and with fresh ingredients ! I loved my homemade gnocchi with their special vodka sauce (with extra mascarpone!!!) and salad of tomatoes with onion and gorgonzola...simply delicious! Nice wine list and fabulous family running this establishment. Warm & friendly... definitely check this place out. Buon Appetito!

This place is always a pleasure for dinner. Quiet music from Dean Martin or Frank Sinatra create an ambiance perfect for a date or a meeting of friends. Pasta and sauce selections make this establishment easy for return visits without having the same dish twice. The wine list is limited, but decently priced. Energetic wait staff are attentive to the table needs while also eager to provide recommendations if you are having trouble deciding on a meal choice. I haven't tried the desserts, but I am positive with the rest of the dinning experience, this place wouldn't sell you short!

Average food, attentive staff. I think that this is probably one of the better restaurants in Dixon, but nothing to write home about.
