It is what it is, a fast food sushi place. It'll definitely satisfy that sushi craving.

Pros: Fantastic Hibachi Above-average sushi Value Cons: Addictive In my travels I have yet to find a Japanese restaurant that offers a better combination of value and quality than Fushi Yami. The hibachi (all varieties) is fantastic and affordable, the included hibachi-grilled onions and zucchini are fantastic, and the rice is great. The pinku and ginger sauces are great compliments. The sushi is above average and the prices are reasonable. They often offer coupons that make it a steal of a deal. Most Japanese restaurants in this price range specialize in teriyaki, but FushiYami offers (what I consider to be much more valuable) superb hibachi delicacies. In a college town where bang-for-your-buck is king, FushiYami maintains this standard while offering some of the best Japanese food that you'll find in Northern Illinois and beyond.

I probably eat at FushiYami at least twice a month. FushiYami is in a strip mall dubbed the Junction right off of Lincoln Highway and right in NIU campus. The eating space is booths in the main room and tables in the front area. This is an order at the counter restaurant. FushiYami is clean and pleasantly decorated. Would I bring kids here....maybe. During the semesters you will see a good deal of students anyways. FushiYami did not seem Japanese owned and operated, not that this is any type of requirement of course. I dislike the typical Chinese restaurant cheap wood chopsticks that never break clean. The soda machine, plastic ware, and paper napkins shows that FushiYami is targeting carry-out and college students more than dine-in. It used to be all Styrofoam, paper napkins, plastic cups, and disposable utensils. Awhile ago they started serving dine-in food on non-disposable plates. I do prefer to sit down while deciding on the menu. Although I consider FushiYami my "7 minute drive to get some quick sushi", in those cases I'm not looking for a sit down restaurant. The menus prices are fair considering the scale of this restaurant. I actually prefer their hibachi. The steak hibachi with their sauce and the ginger sauce is one of my favorites. You can choose between white and fried rice but I personally think the white rice is best with the steak hibachi. The hibachi side veggies are also good although I noticed (sadly) they have been cutting back on the amount of zucchini you get. I also frequent the una-q (eel) and spicy tuna unamaki. The una-q is usually very good. The spicy tuna and salmon are ok but are hardly spicy at all. I've also tried the yakisoba which was also decent. FushiYami has started offering more choices since they first opened, including some noodle offerings as well. **The last time we ate at FushiYami the una-q was not so good. I was pretty apparent that their eel was not the usual quality. I'm hoping that this is a one time issue!**

I grew up eating at places like Onami's, a West Coast sushi buffet. Since moving to the Midwest, I have found few places to cure my cravings. Fushi Yami popped up like a god-send. Their spider crab rolls are excellent and their hibachi is spot-on. Occassionally they will put too much oil in their fried rice, but it still tastes good. The owners did not skimp on desserts or drinks either. Their ice cream bon bons are fantastic, as well as the assorted Asian candies available for purchase. As a tip-of-the-hat to this establishment, I took my cousin to Fushi Yami last night. She had never eaten sushi before and I recommended the tempura shrimp roll. After dinner I was informed she is hooked on sushi, and could not wait to come back and try more. This is a great, casual place to take a date for dinner, or to relax after finals. They have a large, semi-private seating area towards the front for parties, high-top tables and booths for couples, as well as a few larger seating arrangements for less formal groups. As wonderful as they are, I only give them four stars because they are not the best sushi house I have ever been to, though they are the best I have had since leaving the West Coast.

***update!*** NOW you can get your food on REAL PLATES! No more styrofoam! UPGRADED REVIEW TO 4 STARS! Sushi good! Carry-out/Order-at-counter style restaurant so there's just a cup to tip if you wish. Seating was comfortable enough and the walls were comfortably painted with decent lighting but crappy american radio. It would be nice to have some Japanese music going.

Surprisingly good sushi...a little pricey for a college town but good nevertheless.

We like to order from Fushi Yami when we're really craving some sushi but don't feel like spending a ton of money. It's not the best sushi I've ever had, but you really can't beat their prices or selection! I've also gotten the hibachi as well and I've never been dissatisfied with what I've gotten. I have to say, a sushi place that delivers is pretty cool too!

    (4)
  • Ben M.

The sushi here is not very good... If you are near NIU, have little time, and are craving spicy tuna rolls; this place is for you! Otherwise... Go to Haru. It's much better.

  • Anita M.

yes ladies and gents, good OI Dekalb finally has a sushi joint! The Spicy Crunchy White Tuna roll is delicious as well as the chicken hibachi fried rice. Everything is moderately priced with an average of $5 per roll. Don't expect this to be a nice sit down restaurant however, its considered express (kinda like panda express) so its all served in Styrofoam plates and such. Its not sushi like the city but not a bad start for dekalb. Go ahead and give it a try!

  • Mikel S.

Fushi Yami sounds nice except to the Japanese since it says "Eternal Darkness", but besides the odd naming choice, the food is healthy! The food is pretty sizable and the spending range is from $8 to $14. The one thing I don't like is that the scallops are never done very well. Besides that, the place is timely service and the food is good. The lighting in the building does make it very gloomy though because it is mostly dark.

Decent sushi for a price that is pretty common. Nothing out of the ordinary, but the food is usually solid.

I frequented Fushi Yami between Spring 2011 and May 2012 while I was a student at NIU, usually with a friend or two. Occasionally, more recently, I eat there if I am in DeKalb for a visit. Generally, I order the Chicken Hibachi with fried rice. It is served with this orange sauce, which has to be unique; it is so delicious! The portion size was nearly generous. The price for this meal (with water) was only about $6.00. Getting any meat besides chicken or any combination of meat thereof in the Hibachi dishes increases the cost substantially with little to no gain in quality or quantity. They used to have beer available there but do not since the steakhouse next door opened -- which is a shame. Service is efficient. It is a quiet restaurant that might actually be good for conducting business. I highly recommend it.

Came here with my little sister, who goes to NIU. Cheap, quick, generous, and tasty. Can't really go wrong! We did the hibachi grill option and it was very well seasoned and seemed fresh.

  • Monique C.

Honestly, this place isn't the greatest, but considering you're in the middle of nowhere and limited food selection, it's pretty good. I remember going here a lot with my sisters when it first opened because all of us love sushi and it was the first sushi place around unless you wanted to get sushi from the dorms or jewel (bleh.. yuck!). Their sushi isn't terrible, but it's not the greatest and it doesn't always taste fresh. I'd prefer their hibachi over their sushi. Service is always good and the owner is really nice, but the price is a bit high for okay quality. However, their menu keeps expanding which is a plus.

  • Jenn H.

Sushi is really good and a wide variety. I didn't like their tofu appetizer though. Atmosphere is inviting. My favorite place to eat in Dekalb.

  • Oliver k.

Really good stuff they got going on in here.

    (4)
  • Breana R.

The steak and chicken hibachi is my favorite!! The fried rice is so gooood. I also get the house salad which is super simple but the dressing and fried onions give it a delicious flavor. I think they are very reasonably priced as well.

    (5)
  • Kristine M.

This is a good place to eat and the food is good. However it is close to NIU so you do tend to see a lot of loud (and often drunk) college students. As such we always do take out. Their chicken BBQ on skewers is excellent. Some of the sushi is good, however be prepared for an overly strong fishy flavor, even on the California rolls. We stopped eating here once the fishy flavor got stronger and stronger.

    (3)
  • Felice C.

It's basically this and Haru of Japan in the vicinity of NIU for sushi. It's fairly cheap here for what you get...but 3 stars cos it's pretty mediocre quality. I ordered gyoza, spicy crunchy white tuna, and salmon dream (4 pc. California roll, 6 pc. salmon sushi, 8 pc. spicy salmon) for carry-out around 3pm on a Monday. The total was $22.50, but the guy on the phone was curt and was talking so fast like he was so busy (but he wasn't...)--it came off a bit rude. I wouldn't say I won't come back, considering there aren't many sushi places around here. But if I could eat sushi elsewhere...I would. Thumbs up for an easy-to-use website!

    (3)
  • Christi J.

I tried the hibachi steak lunch. OMGosh, so good. The steak was medium rare, I got veggies that were sauteed, and fried rice. I'm not sure what they put on the fried rice, but it was sweet tasting and delicious. If you're watching what you eat, I would suggest the steamed white rice. I love this place, never had a meal that I didn't like.

    (5)
  • Marta I.

Fresh and delicious as always. I love their hibachi chicken. Crazy roll is probably my altimeter favorite. Right now they have a Halloween roll that us BANgIN! It was pumpkin, salmon, avocado, and spicy mayo! Totally try it out! A little kick but not too much. So tasty! Love this place for lunches with my ladies sometimes too!

Love, love, love this restaurant! I discovered this hidden gem when a friend was visiting and we were looking for sushi. The menu is well displayed above the cash register, along with a good description of what is all in the food you're ordering. The staff is very helpful in recommending food to fit your mood. I ordered the spicy veggie crunch, miso Soup and spring rolls. All were very good, but The miso Soup is exceptional. They offer cooked as well as raw sushi which is a plus if you want to introduce someone to the sushi world. The atmosphere is nice. They usually have sports playing on either television they have there, which isn't my favorite thing to watch, but we do live in a college town.

  • Chris R.

We enjoy this little shushi place. As with most sushi, it can be pricey for what you get. Great flavors and good service. We've never had anything to complain in the many times we've been here. Tons of variety, something for everyone here.

  • Tom S.

Really good sushi. Combo fried rice is great also. Fast service too. I've eaten here many time

  • João D.

Great restaurant and great food. However, delivery area is limited. I live in Sycamore and after ordering received a call informing they would not make the delivery due distance. A pity as it seems all the other Japanese restaurants in the area doesn't make deliver at all, meaning, a great opportunity lost by the owner in making more orders. I would order at least once a week, again a pity. You will lose a customer.

    (1)
  • Matthew K.

The sushi is pretty decent. I personally like the Firecracker and Baby Monster rolls. I don't think I've ever had a disappointing experience with the food. Dinners can get expensive in a hurry, though.

    (4)
  • Jackie C.

Like their hibachi but they have poor customer service. Anytime I call in an order they're rude. About three years ago they were friendly but it's been horrible there. Last three times we have ordered their credit card machine was down so they required cash only yet they didn't mention that when we ordered. In all poor customer service beats out the taste. Won't be going there often if at all anymore

Great sushi, hibachi & Japanese food. Excellent variety and ample portions. The take out orders are always accurate and quick and I order around once a week on average.

  • Raymond M.

I love unagi and theirs was just fabulous! I love their hibachi too. Scallops are delicious, seasoned very well and cooked just right coz there's a trick of cooking scallops. I heard that you can now get served on real plates and that is sooo cool. People don't like to get served on styrofoam plates, I myself didn't like the idea but this is the only sushi resto in town so I really didn't mind at all. I am glad that they went extra to use real plates now. Prize range is moderately high. If you are a student, settle for the regular sushi which are as good as the fancy once. They are half the price of the fancy sushi but still you get the same flavor. But if you've got extra money to spend try Godzilla...yummmy!! Overall, the serving, the number of rolls is just right and very filling. I hope they continue their good service to sushi lovers of Dekalb.

Did some traveling in DeKalb and was so excited to see Fushi Yami!! I wanted sushi and there was the answer I was looking for! The food was fast and yummy! Great that they also offer delivery too!

  • Brian H.

Great Japanese food for an affordable price. Would highly recommend their sushi and hibachi!

  • Christina C.

For Dekalb, I would say this place is okay to satisfy a sushi craving. I actually use to live a 2-minute walk from this place so it was a nice place to get sushi for me. It has decent prices and quick service. Overall, the sushi is moderately above the kind of "sushi" you get from Jewel or Dominick's in quality. Its surprising how fresh the ingredients are considering its surrounded by cornfields. The hibachi is not bad. I actually prefer the hibachi over the sushi. I really enjoyed the steak and scallop. I mean its not like Domo 777 or anything, but it works. Overall, this place is OK if you don't feel like driving to Geneva or Naperville for some 4 to 5-star sushi.

  • Jen T.

I had a sushi delivery this past weekend and it was awesome to be able to have sushi in my very own dining room since I don't know if I'd ever attempt making it myself! I ordered online which was quick and easy. The only slight annoyance was that I just wanted two types of rolls and my order was less than $10, but they require a minimum purchase of $10, so I ordered another type. No biggie, my husband ate it later! Delivery was super-fast! The website said about an hour and it was about 30 minutes when it arrived!

  • Michael G.

more of a 2.5 review. Its a decent place to eat, I usually get the hibachi with a side of sushi. Well the hot food is average and nothing special. I noticed when you eat there the portions are small compared to when i have picked up. Some of my friends love it but I think its over rated and would rather eat elsewhere. The sushi it ok, i mean it sushi not much to screw up there just rice and stuff.

    (3)
  • Courtney R.

I love this place. The sushi is always fresh and tasty. My friend and I went here and ordered a bunch of different things and everything was delicious.

    (5)
  • Derek G.

Multiple times over the last few years I've gotten the steak hibachi and the meat has been all gristle. I don't eat here that often either, so its about a 50/50 chance of meat or fat. Don't really care to take that chance anymore.

    (1)
  • Tavi O.

The Snow Crab is EVERYTHING I wanted and more. So good! A Little pricey but its worth it and you do pay for what you get in Quality and quantity. I highly recommend Fushi Yami.

  • Guillermo P.

Sushi is GREAT and I personally dig the theme of this place. Japanese culture is probably one of my favorite! I highly suggest you try their Fried Gyoza, very tasty! This place has earned its spot on my weekly take-out list.

    (4)
  • Kelly J.

I was a weekly guest here and for good reason. The food is delicious and fresh. I also love the substitutions, modifications, and general choices on the menu. I am on a first name basis with the manager who always greets me with a smile when I call in or come in. Clean, clean, clean restaurant.

  • Chris L.

Decided to try this place out because I had a huge sushi craving. Rolls are ehh, but that "spicy yellow tail' just sucked, it was a total joke. It was neither spicy, and had no scallions in the roll. The spicy tuna was tuna with spicy mayo. Don't call your tempura roll tempura, it was a basic fried shrimp in the roll. Your rolls are sloppy and fall apart. This is the McDonalds of sushi.

  • Kat O.

I love their sushi. Thats all ive ordered from there. My favorite is the Spider Crab Roll. My friends have ordered hot/cooked menu and enjoyed it.

  • Angela M.

I have been getting sushi from here for a couple years now and this place is great. The fish is always of very good quality. The "Huskie roll" is especially delicious. I am a DeKalb native, but have not lived in the state for a number of years. Every time I visit DeKalb I make time to stop by fushi yami.

I just ordered from Fushi Yami for dinner. My husband and I eat there at least twice a month. It's good and reasonably priced.

    (5)
  • Marie D.

The food here is delicious and fairly priced - if, of course, you can get it from the staff. Incredibly slow service here, and not the best when dealing with a big rush. But I order takeout all the time! Fantastic steak hibachi and vegetable sushi.

    (4)
  • M R.

The sushi is pretty good. I have had better closer to the city but we are in Dekalb. I just want the salad dressing recipe! The dressing I rate at 4 stars! I know you can buy it there and take it home but I cannot always get out there to buy it. Any suggestions on the recipe for making it at home?

  • Chad G.

WOW.. sushi comes to DeKalb! Now I can satisfy my sushi craving without traveling as far. the menu has traditional maki options in an a somewhat easy to read menu. About two roll orders can fill up one adult if you do not get miso soup or some of those excellent crab egg rolls (I hope they still have those). The hibachi is OK, but we tend to stick to the sushi. Many of their rolls are cooked, only a handful are raw. The beverages are self-service fountain plus some bottled/canned options. All dishes are disposable, either Dixie plates, styrofoam trays, and paper bowls for the soup. Not the greenest restaurant, but they are a great "Sushi To Go" option. Do not expect to see a sushi bar that you can sit at. There are plenty of tables and booths though. I have had better sushi, also have had worse.

    (3)
  • Jan D.

Not a huge selection of sushi but still had what I wanted and it was AMAZING.

    (5)
  • Tatiana P.

This place used be super when it first opened. But, just like any great place after a while it isn't so great anymore. It's like they stopped trying as hard. It really depends on the day, some days it's great, some days not so much. They keep expanding their menu which is great - I always love when they have a new sushi roll - I love trying new things! They do have a good selection of rolls. Sashimi and all that fancier stuff gets expensive, but for rolls it's not too bad. Don't like sushi? They also have good hibachi and a variety of appetizers. They also deliver, and within reasonable time. I consider this place to be a pretty healthy choice, which is important to me, so when I'm dying of hunger at work and can't take a break to go get something, this is the place I always call for delivery.

A bad experience with an extremely rude Caucasian waitress and terrible, overpriced yakisoba are forcing me to knock this one down a star.

    (3)
  • Robert C.

Fushi Yami is a nice alternative to some of the national chains in the DeKalb area. I usually get the hibachi w/ Chicken and fried rice. The chicken tends to be dry, but its not horrible. The fried rice is really good. The portions tend to be smaller, but you can get extra meat for $3 extra. They have a modern decor w/ a couple TV's tuned into the news and whatever game is on. It's worth a try for something different.

    (3)
  • Anne M.

It's just okay, I used to be so excited about this place but they skimp with a few of my orders and the guy tried to trick me by making the softshell crab look bigger and more pronounced than it is by placing it more towards the edge so when he cuts it, it would stand up higher and fuller when there is no softshell crab at all in the middle, hence I'm just eating rice and some fillers. I think that's shady and crude. I will go on to say there are pluses I do remember from this place and it's that I like the firecracker roll, tiger roll, little monster, and dragon roll.... it's fast food meets sushi made by Chinese & Mexican people...it's a filler!

    (2)
  • MB P.

Hibachi is actually good and they do have generous portion. However, any sushi items are very over-priced and very bland.... Special rolls are the worst...$10 for a roll with breadcrumbs and some spicy tuna is not acceptable. Don't waste your money on sushi items.. Hibachi is def worth it..

    (2)
  • Katie D.

The deliciousness of a high end Japanese steak house for half the price, loveeee it. The hibachi chicken is great and the sauces that come with it make it even better.

  • Sarah P.

Sorry to say I live in DeKalb and I disagree with any other reviewer who exclaims, "Sushi came to DeKalb." This place serves sushi by name only. They may do better if they take it off the menu completely. This is very mediocre sushi and I would question how fresh any of it is. In their defense I will say that it is inexpensive and made very quickly. I've eaten here twice now, once when it first opened and now approximately two years later. I was hoping for improvement and it's still the same. If you are looking for sushi and don't mind driving 30-60 minutes away, you should do it. If you're desperate for a sushi fix, this will work. As for me, I'm still waiting for good sushi to arrive in DeKalb.

"Yay! I'm a fan" is a great way to describe my feelings about Fushi Yami. I came here with some ladies after class after hearing from several people it was delish. I was surprised that it was the type of place where you order/pay at the counter then they give you a number and deliver the food to your table. I'd never heard of a quick hibachi place like this but it's convenient for those who want a quicker lunch. I ordered the Fire Cracker Roll ($10), the Sea Scallop Hibachi ($9.50) and and a fountain drink ($1.65). The roll had spicy tuna and tempura in it, among other things, and was topped with more tuna and spicy mayo. Very good! The hibachi was a little less good, the scallops were small and could have been cooked longer, but the fried rice and veggies were perfect. I like that you can choose between fried and white rice without an up-charge. The "white sauce" which is actually pink, was very tasty and complimented the whole meal well. The fountain drinks offer free refills which is always a plus. I took home a whole meal worth of leftovers so i'd say I definitely got my moneys worth. For a Japanese restaurant within walking distance of a college campus I was impressed and plan on coming back.

I loved this place when it first opened. Today I ordered the crunchy white tuna roll and a salmon roll, and a cucumber salad for lunch. It took 30 minutes to be served. They were not busy. Then I found what looked like a wood splinter in my food. It was in the tuna roll. I showed it to them, and they did nothing. So I won't be going back unfortunately. I do hope they improve their service.

Love this place. Number one place for sushi in the Dekalb area in my opinion! I love the snow crab rolls and their hibachi dinners are really good all for a reasonable price!
