"Angelo! Rigo!", I exclaim, bee-lining to the bar before checking in to my room. They reply with a smiling glimmer of familiarity, "HEY! Good to see you again!" I can't imagine Angelo and Rigo, the awesome bartenders at Hyatt Deerfield's Jaxx Bistro & Lounge, recall everyone they've met over the years, but they make it a point to consistently treat guests with friendly welcome and comforting hospitality. They're one of my favorite parts of the Hyatt Deerfield/Jaxx experience when I travel! Hyatt Deerfield is one of the preferred accommodations when travelling to work's corporate HQ (Northbrook), so I've stayed there a few times (and probably will a few more). Great, great hotel (linky:http://www.yelp.com/biz/hyatt-hotels-and-resorts-deerfield?hrid=U7io5AtKFLKkJ_eqA5GivA ), but there's a scarcity of nearby [walking distance] restaurants/entertainment and sometimes you just aren't in the mood to venture out, cars or cabs or shuttles withstanding. In a pinch, Jaxx (or room service provided by Jaxx) offers decent fare at an understandable premium ( deerfield.hyatt.com/en/h… ) when hunger hits, and a decent bar/lounge when the hotel room feels isolating. The Breakfast buffet ($18) hits the spot (or spots, depending on how much you put on your plate!) and is a great start to the work day! Eggs two ways, sausage, bacon, breakfast breads, cereal, fresh fruit, yogurt & dairies, etc. The abundance of laptop toters and sharply-attired early risers converged every morning in the restaurant is indicative how much this is a business travellers' hotel. THe morning waitstaff are pleasantly attentive and friendly, setting a great mood. There's also a Starbucks kiosk for those "shoot! Got up late and the shuttle is about to leave!" mornings. The lunch Meyer™ natural angus burger ($13) with aged white cheddar, onion jam, & horseradish sauce on a brioche bun is a decent, satisfying sandwich, served with fries or chips for extra guilty gluttony. It's got the kind of heft and slight glisteny sheen that any self-respecting burger should have, so have an extra napkin at the ready. Plus, it's one of the more accessible and reasonably priced items on the menu, allowing some wiggle room on the per diem for necessary liberties of the liquid kind. Priorities. The dinner Chilean Sea Bass sautéed, over spinach and oven-roasted tomatoes with saffron broth ($36) was light and uncomplicated. I don't often do much fine dining, so I have little experience to compare to, but this dish was flavorful and delicate, deservedly getting top billing (and priciest!) on the hotel menu. The beer & liquor program here is sufficient - there are usually 5 taps carrying the usual array of beers (lager, IPA, wheat, amber, something local, etc), as well as a couple bottled beers, wines, plus liquors and mixers. The dining area & bar are great venues for people watching and mingling IF there are activities being held in the hotel - this Hyatt is a popular venue, it seems, for conferences and the bar sees quite a bit of liberal "put it on the company card" traffic - otherwise, it can be serenely vacant. Some nights the hours have flown by while chatting with conference goers at the bar, some nights have been spent at a lobby table quietly dining by the glow of a laptop. In either situation, Jaxx has been an apt setting. While driving to/through a nearby town or trekking into Chicago proper for dinner/drinks/night out would be fun and/or picturesque, sometimes you gotta choose to stay near and enjoy the perks you have. Thankfully, Jaxx makes enjoying those perks comforting and worthwhile. I'm looking forward to the next trip and stay. ________________________________________ Plus, being an elevator ride away from your room, shower, and bed are a blessing when a stressful day at work means dinner is "beer & whiskey, neat, please?"

The only reason you'd probably be eating here is because you're traveling for business. That being said, it's a solid choice, offers enough healthy options, the menu has a nice variety. It is a bit overpriced, but I suppose that's what happens in hotel restaurants - plus, if you're traveling for business, you're going to expense your meal anyways. I had dinner and lunch here (because that's what happens when you travel for work and never leave the hotel). They'll start you off with sliced multigrain bread and a large pretzel bread, both of which are delicious. It's served with a honey butter. If you're trying to exercise self control, pass on the bread because you'll likely eat all of it in one sitting. I had the sea bass ($34) for dinner and it was light and delicious. It was served with 2 slices of roasted tomato and spinach. No complaints, other than it was a little on the pricey side. The next day, I had the French Onion Soup ($6.50), which was also good - it had good flavor without being too salty. I asked for half the cheese, which was the right amount of cheese for me. The size is fairly substantial too and enough to share between two people. My favorite dish from them was the Farmer's Green Salad with Salmon ($15). Yes, pricey for a salad but at least the lettuce mix was fresh (the worst is getting wilted, rotting pieces of salad), and the salmon was cooked perfectly and was flavorful, not bland. I think just the salad alone would have filled me out - I'd definitely recommend it and would get it again the next time I'm here. All in all, I was pleased with the quality of the food here and would recommend it if you're traveling for work and don't have to foot the bill.

Now that I'm a fairly regular guest at the Hyatt Deerfield, I've really come to appreciate everything Jaxx Bistro & Lounge has to offer. In addition to the new decor, Jaxx has updated its menu, now offering a wider selection of dinner options, including a DIY meal, where you select the protein, sauce and sides. Excellent for picky eaters, or those with food allergies. The friendly and helpful staff are quick with recommendations, and service is quite efficient. My new favorite dinner item is the sea bass, but their burgers are quite tasty too. Breakfast is always good, with eggs cooked to order and tons of fresh fruit. And for those on the go, Jaxx has a tiny Starbuck's kiosk near the front of the restaurant.

Why this restaurant is not busier on a Saturday night, I'm not sure because the food is delicious. Stayed 1 night for business & ate at Jaxx. The Chilean Sea Bass is amazing!! Love that they don't ruin a mild fish by covering it in an unnecessary sauce. Instead they serve it with roasted spinach & tomatoes and let the flavors shine!! Kudos to the chef!

Food is good. Extremely friendly waitstaff. Slightly overpriced because it's in a hotel. Good enough that I didn't get sick of eating here three nights of the week while I was traveling for business.
