First time here and we really enjoyed it. Sunday around lunch time. Seated right away, ordered right away. Food was great! We had an omelet and a skillet. Didn't care for the coffee at all. But I prefer a bolder coffee. We will definitely be back again.

Great breakfast & lunch spot up North! Very busy at lunch time but got seated right away. Large menu to pick from. Tried the turkey melt with tomato soup and it was delicious!

The food wasn't bad, that said, the customer service sucks. Don't ask for a container to,take soup, home, they don't have them, don't ask for anything but styrofoam, because it's the only kitchen on the planet that doesn't have aluminum foil. If you care at all about the environment, don't go,there. If you want to have a conversation with a manager or the owner, don't go there. He refused to come to a customers table!! Like I said customer service, SUCKS,

This place has great eggs, good French toast, and delicious bacon. However, the service is iffy depending on the server. Most are quite friendly though have encountered some who are short, rude, or dismissive.

This place does a great job with breakfast. Easily accessible, great service and excellent food. I was shocked with how attentive they are to the customers (I sat next to a customer with a VERY specific order, he seemed happy when the staff brought it over) and the food is some of the best breakfast fare around the area. This place will be a goto for me moving forward.

Updated today to 4 stars --- great breakfast and service - maybe someone reads yelp here. Really 2.5 stars. Decent breakfast, decent service, but a very good location and comfortable environment. A ton of booths and window seats to relax in. While its not "great" food it is decent, but it's that type of place that grows on you for just the comfort relaxation factor. They could have better managment and friendlier front end folks, but my waitress was nice.

I absolutely love this place!!! It's so cozy and the food is fantastic!!!! I love the gypsy skillet followed with the French toast (course I have to share) as the portions are huge. For lunch I normally have the Caribbean salad or the portobello sandwich.......mmmmm delicious.

A good neighborhood joint. Good menu for a diner. Great service. It's the reason I come back. The food is good and fresh. I mainly come for the breakfast. Omelets, eggs etc are always done right. Your coffee will never be empty for more than a gulp. Good for business breakfasts too (nice and quiet).

Not sure what people expect from a breakfast cafe with some of the subpar reviews here. The Eggshell Cafe is exactly what it holds itself out to be. It's a diner/cafe that serves breakfast and lunch. That's it, no more, no less. That said, I love, love, love their skirt steak skillet. It's hearty, it's filling, and it's tasty. Their portions are large, but the price is not cheap, so I think its a fair value for what you get. Breakfasts typically come with toast or pancakes. Lunches typically come with a side of soup. I have not had a bad thing here yet.

Came for breakfast, ordered the special which was sausage, eggs, hashbrowns and pancakes. Food was great, service was good. Nothing mind blowing but solid across the board.

Unfortunately, we will no longer be patronizing this restaurant. The location is perfect for breakfast meetings for our executives. The issue I had was the service when calling back for some help with a receipt. The one we received was not legible. I asked for a copy, and was rudely told that is was not something they could/would do. I would have easily worked around the lack of receipt, and tried to come up with an alternative. However, given the treatment I received over the phone, I just can't justify sending our office guests back.

I WILL NOT RETURN TO THIS ESTABLISHMENT. So why would I say that about a restaurant that I have given four stars to and live about 10 miles away from? Here's why... I went there on a Thursday morning and walked up to the door - I have included two photos of what I observed at the doorway when I arrived - please check them out. I was seated as I walked up to the host stand, given a nice booth by a window overlooking Lake-Cook Rd. I decide to order my "standard" breakfast - a Lox & Onion Omelette with a tomato juice. Spiros is my server and takes my order. Shortly afterwards, my meal arrives. The omelette is a fluffy style as advertised - a nice size and not "over-fluffed". Fair amount of lox - that's good too. Hashbrowns look and end up tasting pretty good - nice mix of browned and non-browned taters, not greasy either. English muffin is lightly toasted as requested. Tomato juice (I was given a large one though I did not specify nor was I asked) was fine and OK for the price. I finish up and I'm thinking, "all in all, this was a pretty good place; good food, decent service, fair prices... I can see coming here more often." Spiros sets down my tab - $14.67 with tax. I review it and set down my AMEX - which I use for virtually all my personal transactions. Spiros comes up to take the bill... "I'm sorry sir, we don't take American Express." My jaw drops - "Yes you do - it's posted at your entrance" (pointing toward the front). "I'm sorry sir, we don't take American Express" repeated Spiros. I'm livid about this but am not going to argue the point because if this is the case, no amount of arguing will change the cards they accept - whether they advertise that they accept them or not. I give him a bankcard that I use for other things as I have no cash with me. He returns the bill - but no manager approaches me about the card acceptance issue. I did tip him for the service provided as he doesn't make the decisions about credit cards. But for me, here's the bottomline - I will not visit or support a business that uses DECEPTIVE business practices. I went back later to take the photos I shared here - if this was simply an oversight, those AMEX decals would be GONE. But they weren't. So... while I did have a good meal here - that's what my four star rating is based on - I will NOT go back and spend my money at a place that falsely advertises and deceives its customers. There are plenty of other four star restaurants that I can get breakfast at that don't mislead their guests.

Not sure why my last post isn't showing but I wanted to say what a great experience I had with my mom. We stopped in for lunch this time and it was real yummy! Great choices, we even had the same sweet server. Both of us were very pleased once again.

Just an egg joint, food is good, however the owner is arrogant and rude. The waitress lost my credit card after charging the meal. She looked a little then said just too busy, not sure where your card went. The owner says, he will put my card at the front desk if it shows up. He does not want my name nor my phone number as it is my responsibility to call and check with him. He says, "What do you want me to do, I didn't lose it." Will never return again, too many egg joints in the area to put up with this type of customer service.

I really, really try not to give negative reviews unless the place is truly awful. This place is truly awful. I work nearby, so I've found myself at Eggshell probably four or five times in the last year. Every time, I wonder why I come back. First thing - the food. It's aggressively mediocre. Soup is clearly not fresh, pancakes are tasteless, hash browns are soft and not crispy, salad toppings/omelet fillings are canned. Two stars for food, because even though it doesn't knock it out of the park, it's pretty much what you'd expect. THE SERVICE IS AWFUL. Every time I've been there, the group I'm with has been given a very nasty attitude by the guy that I presume is the owner and the other male server. The ladies have all been pretty nice and accommodating. A great example: because I've had the misfortune of dining here several times, I know there's a policy that you can't split checks and you can only use up to three credit cards per check. Annoying, but whatever, it happens. My group (of 6) ordered, ate (the server only came by to take the order and then drop off the food, never checked on us or anything) and waited around for a LONG time to get our check. It was dropped off and my table worked it out so that we gave some cash and three cards, everything was written down neatly so the server would know which card to charge with what amount. The server, very rudely, told us that we couldn't pay that way and that we could do two cards and cash, or three cards. Just to clarify, at the beginning of the meal we ASKED HIM if we could split the check and he told us no, we could put it on three cards and cash. Listen, I get the plight of the server. I waited tables for three years and I totally understand that sometimes the restaurant has systems set up in an illogical way. But there's a way to politely explain the situation without being abrasive, rude and, frankly, just obnoxious. Because we're not monsters, we left him a decent tip, but you'd be better off going across the hall to the Greek restaurant. The servers there are super chill and the food doesn't taste like it's been sitting under heat lamps for three hours.

First review just so I can tell people about the horrible customer service it ran into. Arrived here to a 1/25 filled house and informed the host I would need a table for 3 when my party would arrive. He waived his hand and told me to sit and wait on the dust covered benches. I told him I just flew in and was hoping to get a drink while waiting. Nope - go sit and wait. So now I will be waiting at the nearest Starbucks and eating at the Jimmy Johns across the street.

Some days especially when I get into one of the moods where I yelp a lot I wonder if I am being hyper critical of stores and restaurants. Today I was with the kids and wanted to venture out to a different breakfast spot. I have passed eggshell thousands of times and thought today was the day to try. I saw the prior reviews but dam the torpedoes I was going. I am sorry to my fellow yelpers I should have listened and not doubted you. This was a meal of pet peeves: 1. I walk in and see many open tables and told to wait (I know I was a waiter and they may have not wanted to slam a waiter or the kitchen) but let me sit away from the drafty front. 2. Coffee was warm and I needed to seek you out after my cup was empty for 10 minutes. 3. When you mess up the order say something and fix it quickly especially if it is for a kid as they do not wait well. 4. Fill the water cups 5. If asked for extra napkins don't bring 2 they are kids! 6. If the bill is $25 and I give you a large bill and it is not even in a folder don't ask if I need change. I am not giving you a gift. 7. Give change so I can easily give a tip In case you are wondering the waiter said he had been here a long time. Don't go here there are lots of great breakfast places nearby.

Okay, so we are moving up a star. Here's why. Very friendly! Seriously, a big change. We enjoyed our meal and didn't feel like everyone had RBF (resting bitch face). These folks were friendly today and food was solid (that's never been an issue). Way to go Eggshell....you're smiling!!!!!

By far the best Breakfast around. This place is always jammed packed. Service is fast and very nice. The waiters have been there for years. Their omelette are to die for and the pita toast is like nothing you have ever tasted. Delicious, delicious, delicious. Their skillet egg dishes and pancakes are amazing. Don't miss this place.

Okay. So let's put it this way: veggie quesadilla with spinach and cheese? Sounds good? yes. Reality? They're using frozen broccoli in the quesadilla. Beyond the question of "why broccoli in a quesadilla?" which may be up to personal preference, the choice of frozen crap is an automatic -2 stars. It came out incredibly hot, but that didn't hide the problems with the broccoli. Oddly enough, the mushrooms in the quesadilla were fresh. So how does that work out? Service was polite, but I wouldn't even call the food credible. Don't give me that shit at a restaurant. Straight up unacceptable. I don't go to a restaurant to eat frozen food. Soup was okay, fries were....heavily fried, but hey - you're not coming here for exceptional quality, I suppose. I do not condone frozen food in a restaurant, and I do not suggest this place for that reason. Sorry, but no. I feel really sorry for the waitstaff, because they're pretty friendly and do a good job in comparison. You get what you pay for as far as lunch goes.

The Eggshell Café is a decent family restaurant which serves up some pretty good food. They are open only for Breakfast and Lunch from 6:30am until 2:30pm and they had many breakfast and lunch choices to choose from. We had a nice server who was very attentive even though it was pretty busy today, even on this 4th of July Holiday! Honestly.. not much more to say than this, it was a decent enough place to stop off and have lunch.. I know my Aunt had a great looking chopped salad and I had a nice corned beef sandwich.. Steak fries were just okay.. So.. the fact is we initially were headed to Dimitri's, a pretty great greek restaurant from what I have been told. However, they were closed for this holiday. So.. we wound up next door at The Eggshell Café. One complaint.. in order to visit the restroom you must leave the restaurant ..which makes no sense to me.. Other than that, it was an okay lunch Not great.. just okay..

Love this place for a relaxing breakfast it's great during the weekdays before heading into work. The wait staff is really friendly and the food comes out uber fast. I love the omelets they are fluffy and delicious, the hash brown are always golden brown.

Today my friends and I ate here only to be served a cockroach in her omelet. We waved down the owner/manager who first ask her if it was on her plate or in the omelet. It was in the omlet no doubt about it. He then took the plate to the kitchen and then returned to seating customers. No apology, nothing. Waitress came over to do his job and said sorry and told us they spray monthly, like that should make us feel better. We got up and walked out. But first we stopped and addressed the owner/manager. Again no aplogy just deplorable behavior. He said to my friend you have been coming here for years. Not sure what that has to do with a bug in the food. Again, he could care less that we had a bug in our food. Wll never eat here not only because of the bug but because of his deplorable behavior toward customers.

I went today to pick up my food. I called the place because I got lost going to this place. I called the place and they told me that is across the street from Home Depot. The guy on the phone yelled at me on the phone, which is not nice. You should never yell at anyone on the phone. They sounded so rude to me on the phone. When I got to the place, the guy there, looked at me like he was mad at me. You are supposed to greet your guests with a smile and be nice to them. I did not appreciate the guy in the front to be rude to me. The meal itself was cold. They should have microwaved the meal. I think Walker Bros is a better place then this one.

We were here about a month or two ago on a Sunday morning. The OJ was good, but everything else was just meh. The server was not very interactive - almost robotic. Everything just seemed disjointed. There are better places to go.

I have had monthly breakfast meetings at Eggshell Café for over two years and have found the meals delicious and the service incredible. Jon and his team always make my guests feel special and they know how to serve without being intrusive. I have ordered many items not on the menu and have always been accommodated. I encourage others to try this awesome restaurant for group events as the private room is perfect!

The owner/manager of this place is the most arrogant and unaccommodating person I have EVER encountered. If you would like relatively decent service - DO NOT GO HERE!!! I've been here twice and I will never ever go back, ever. Just think of Taylor Swift singing about this place instead of her ex. The first time I went, I saw the manager fighting with a customer the minute we arrived. The customer was very kindly explaining to him that there was a hair in her soup. He said "So, what do you expect me to do about it" and gave her a terrible scowl. She said, well you're the manager what do you suggest. He said "we do nothing". She said there's a hair in my soup and you'll do nothing? He belittled her and she screamed several well deserved profanities at him then stormed out. As a manager, he handled the situation in a ridiculous manner. I thought it was a one time thing. Today, I recommended this place to a group of old co-workers that drove a half hour to meet for lunch. We all had debit cards - no cash. Upon sitting down, we asked our waiter if he could give us separate checks (we even said we know this is a pain but no one has cash). He said no, he can't do separate checks. I asked him if he could ask the manager because if he can't our group of 5 would need to leave. Surely they'd accommodate a seated group of 5 on a Thursday at 11:30 am, right? I see our waiter walk off and instead of asking he just decided to wait on another table. I decided to ask the manager instead. Forget about the glaring look of disgust he gave me when I asked to speak to him and his demeaning and rude tone for a sec. I politely explained our situation and asked if he can split our check so we can eat. His response "no.". No. Really? So I asked him if he really was going to have us leave because he didn't want to split a check. His response "yes.". Oh really? So, you don't want our business? "What do you want me to do about it? I'm not splitting your check" Between his tone, the look on his face, his responses and thinking back to the soup woman I decided to lay into this prick. I screamed in his face that he can go and #!%@ himself and that he's an #!%@ #!%@. Loudly. I also loudly mentioned the soup incident. I went and told our group we're leaving because this guy REFUSES to take our business because he's a lazy #!%@ #!%@. I am absolutely stunned at the behavior of this man. I'm beyond surprised that he's not bankrupt.

Good solid lunch place. I had a Caesar salad, and it was a GOOD sized salad with just the right amount of dressing. I'd have thrown in some more anchovies and lemon juice, but hey... that the way I make it at home. The bread was, I thought, a bit stale. Reading reviews, a lot of folks have complained about poor service. While I wouldn't exactly call it "friendly", I would call it efficient. I was seated right away. When I found that the lamp over my table was missing a bulb (kind of hard to read my Kindle!), I was promptly seated at another table. So... ok in my book.

Pleasantly surprised by Eggshell Cafe. Very good food, delivered fast by friendly wait staff. I had a solid breakfast skillet with steak and for under $10, can't be beat. Highly recommend checking this place out.

It's okay. The skillet was tasty but very greasy especially near the bottom. Strawberry french toast was pretty good. Service not the best. We asked for a to go box and didn't receive one. I wouldn't come back - the food wasn't that great.

I visited this place for the 1st time today to have lunch with some co-workers. Eggshell shares an entry way with Demetri's ( a greek restaurant). We walked-in and much to our surprise, we were greeted by the owner. At least I assume it was the owner because the walls are decked with pictures of him and Chicago celebrities from Jon Scheyer to Mike Ditka. Also the place is dotted with soccer balls, framed jerseys and soccer club scarves. The place was pretty busy at 11:45 when we walked-in, but we were seated immediately. Our waitress came by and took our drink orders. There was a bit of a delay before she came back to take our orders, but it was very busy and the guests that she was serving were not very patient. The food came out as we had ordered and hot. I had a corned beef hash skillet. It was underseasoned for my taste, but still good. The pancakes that came with it were amazing. I can't believe I ate the whole thing. My co-workers had the Turkey club wrap with fries and the tuna melt with fruit. Both seemed to like the food. Overall, this is a good place to have lunch, but it is pretty busy. I chose here because I wanted to eat breakfast for lunch, and my wish was granted.

Nasty! I walked in yesterday to have lunch alone and I asked the owner repeatedly if they had somewhere to sit. He served everyone else and left me standing there! There were also 3 waiters and 1 waitress that saw me standing there. I am fasting this week for church and just wanted a veggie skillet. I left when he completely ignored me. Do NOT go to this restaurant. They don't care about their customers!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Cassie S.

This place is solidly ok. Hence the meh. Not great but not totally terrible. The food is ok. The service was ok. The prices were ok. I had the Caribbean salad. I asked for dressing on the side but they drowned it in dressing anyway (which is annoying because once a salad has been dressed, you really can't save it for later and I certainly had enough for leftovers!). The soup was nice. I had the split pea. I'll probably go back - it is across the street from my office after all - but not somewhere I'd really make an effort to get to.

Look, this isn't gourmet dining, but it is a great brunch option in a busy brunch landscape. I don't like the crepes and don't love the pancakes, but the salads, eggs, skillets, and waffles are excellent. My favorite is the walnut salad. It's not on the menu always (but can always requested), and it includes romaine, walnuts, oranges, apples, raisins, and hearts of palms. It's refreshing to get more than a basic chopped or green salad at a place like this. Also, the Mexican skillet is delicious. Good prices, plenty of tables for larger groups, and fast service.

    (4)
  • Marc J.

Unbelievably bad service. it seemed like the server was bothered that we were ordering food and creating work for her. The orders showed up wrong and instead of apologizing she tried arguing with us that the orders were correct. Asked to see a manager, who never came. They undercharged us on our bill by accident. After we paid, but before we left, the owner came by to demand another $40. When we complained about the terrible service he actually threatened to call the police if we did not pay. Not just bad service but mean service.

  • Harini P.

Let me just say that I am an omelet lover. I love the textures, lightness and of course, the flavor. I know people say eggs are something hard to mess up, but it is all about the texture and perfect balance/ratio of egg to toppings. The omelets here are so airy and perfect. I love coming here for lunch and feeling like I am indulging!

Consistent good food. Average prices for that area. Brunch will run about $12-$15 with breakfast or lunch and a drink and tip. Service has been improved and is above average. It can be a bit noisy on Sundays.

THE WORST!! The owner/manager is a complete a$$#$%&! Has a real nasty attitude, almost arrogant. On a good day still does not smile or add one bit of customer service. When I was a "good customer" eating there 3 times a month - never got a smile or hello out of him, and when I order the same entree ordered every time with a minor modification - although he knew me, he refused and was a jerk about it. I was shocked, it was unlike anything I had experienced at any restaurant I've been to. Food is ok, nothing spectacular. Do not recommend this place at all. Too many better places around with much better food, atmosphere and customer service.

I just left eggshell cafe. While the food was delicious never in my life have I had worse service at a restaurant! My girlfriend and I arrived several minutes before the 2:30 closing time expecting to be turned away, however surprisingly we were seated and given menus. However, it was at this point we wished they had simply informed us the restaurant was closed. Our waitress arrived immediately after we were seated and ordered us to place an order. We kindly asked for two minutes to at least see what was on the menu and were told to "order now". After being rushes through ordering (drinks were never offered) our food arrived and our waitress disappeared for no more than ten minutes, only to return with the check. I continued to eat for a maximum of five minutes before being told I had to "pay now". The waitress then stood there while I examined the check and impatiently told me to sign it. She looked non to pleased with the tip and walked away in a hurry. As stated above I would have much rather been told they were closed than be forced to sit through by far the rudest service I have ever received. I would not recommend eating here, and personally will never step foot through the door of Eggshell Cafe ever gain. Ps I'm from New York and am used to subpar service, but nothing like this!

I work just down the street from Eggshell and it is always my default for a consistent quality, reasonably priced breakfast or lunch. The service is always prompt and friendly, and the food is very consistent. There can be a small wait at times, but the restaurant is large enough that I've never seen a wait more than 5 or 10 minutes long. Eggshell is great!

    (5)
  • Melanie V.

Derrick Rose, David Beckham, Alfonso Soriano....I walked into Eggshell and noticed the massive amounts of pictures the owner had with all these sports stars and other various celebs. I could've stared at that wall for a good 15 minutes! Anyway, the food here is great! I'm a big fan of the quesadilla's and the chicken salad on a pita. It's always packed when we go here, but the service is never slow. My coworkers love the breakfast options (they offer every breakfast item imaginable, even a bacon topped waffle!). This is a great place to go to escape from the monotonous work day...even if just for a little bit.

    (5)
  • Donald R.

Save yourself some money...don't order the quesadilla (chicken or steak, we tried both). They are served without sour cream or guacamole and the meats are seasoned fir something other than quesadilla. Bus help very loud...not the cleanest place we've ever eaten at.

We're here, we're hungry. Get used to it, brunch. This quaint brunch space I think used to be Ed Debevic's and is now shared with a Greek place. Compared to Ed's, I would say the service is slightly better. I kid I kid, I've never been to Ed's. The breakfast side of the menu has a glaring omission: no biscuits and gravy. Aside from that I guess it's fairly comprehensive but a touch pricey. The lunch side of the menu is average (I got a reuben), the fries were steak fries but had no seasoning. A bowl of soup is also included which was a nice touch. Coming in at about 9 bucks, it's also a tad pricey but the "free" soup evens it out. In conclusion the food is average brunch and that's fine.

This place is right across the street from my cousins place and they suggested for me to try it. The staff is nice and their food is great...Their skillets you can't go wrong with. And their nutella crepes are pretty tasty!

  • Matt B.

It's breakfast, it's lunch. It's pretty good, as far as these things go. The decor is a little old fashioned, but they have booths which are fun. The meals are a not that pricey (about $10 for lunch, including tip), and you get a lot of food including a bowl of soup. I recommend the Caribbean salad with the avocados, hearts of palm, and bacon with the mango dressing. It does get busy at lunch, so if you have a group of five or more I'd definitely call ahead. The staff can be not so nice the first go round, but once they recognize you as a frequent customer they perk up quite a bit.

Went with my family, owner would not give a kids cup for water for our 20 month old baby!!! We were told we have to buy a drink Asked to speak to manager and he would not talk to us. My family eats out at least 6 times a week, I have never heard of this. Food is fine, just can't believe they are so rude and stingy!

I had been here before, but it had been about 5.5 years ago. The wait staff was knowledgeable if not very attentive. I originally ordered the Chicken Salad sandwich on sourdough. When informed they were out of sourdough, I inquired what other bread they had. The waitress suggested Greek Bread. My meal was excellent. Getting the check and a take home box for my son was a struggle. Four stars for the food and three for service. Eggshell is a great place for brunch with good choices from both the lunch and breakfast sides of the menu. The host area has plenty of suckers for the kids and crayons to keep in kids busy.

Third time was not a charm. I went here twice before and didn't love it. I went one more time and had a bad experience. I ordered a roasted red pepper panini with turkey, lettuce and cheese and asked for tuna instead of turkey because I'm a vegetarian. The waiter looked like I asked him to take off all his clothes! He could not make that change. I said, ask the manager if they can make the substitution and if not, I'll just take the panini without the turkey. My food came with the tuna substitute, but the roasted red pepper was a green pepper. I said, thanks for the tuna, but the menu said roasted red pepper and you gave me green. The manager said, green red what is the difference! I said red is sweeter and the menu said red! He said, well you got a pepper! A pepper is a pepper! He stormed away from me. The waiter said he was sorry. I will never go back after being treated so rudely.

Cute little restaurant, but they seem to have an identity crisis. Some of the restaurant is decorated in pastel colors and flowers, very feminine, and then there are sports memoribilia on the walls as well. They serve typical breakfast/lunch foods. Very reasonable prices. It can be crowded on weekends.

We drive to the burbs once every 2 or 3 weeks. We always pass Demetri's Greek restaurant on our way home and this time we decided to stop. We figured if we liked it, we could make it a regular thing. We went inside and instead of a Greek place we found ourselves inside a poorly decorated brunch place. We were starving so we stayed. It was apparently only 15min to closing. We were seated only a minute and asked twice if we knew what we would like to order. My husband said "please give us just 2min to look over the menu" and within 30sec asked again if we had decided. I was flustered and ordered the 1st thing I saw. My sandwich was dry and tasteless. My husbands was supposed to be fried, it was not. The fries were good and service is stupid fast. She asked me if I wanted a togo box before I was half done. When the check was brought it was actually said "pay now I have to cash out". We will never go again. It turns out Demetri's is in the same building but it was closed at the time. This place was so bad that now I don't even think we will try the Greek place in the same building. Next time I will drive on by. Eggshell is terrible.
