Best restaurant in Dekalb! Last Saturday night I had a great time seating at the kitchen bar with my daughter. We asked the chef to make a tasting dinner with some of the best restaurant dishes and it was awesome. Sushi, mussels, bacon wrapped shrimp, scallops, tamales, and tequila dessert were all amazing. The atmosphere is very relaxing, beautiful and the live music adds to the charm. This restaurant could be in New York City!

We went for lunch yesterday and it was ok- nothing special, dark inside at 2 in the afternoon I got the feeling it was more of an evening/dinner location * the food was ok we had crab cake sliders and BBQ chicken and lobster rolls( pretty flavorless) crab cake sliders didn't have much flavor either I would recommend the BBQ chicken ones though *great selection of different kinds of beer and wine * our server was nice and attentive * I did see the bruschetta on the menu and thought it was rather expensive(just my opinion) 10$ for two pieces

Good food, good atmosphere, good music. I can't get enough of their beef carpaccio salad - the chef knows how to cook red meat perfectly. I haven't tried everything but I've yet to be disappointed. Upscale but also cozy and welcoming, this is a much needed addition to Dekalb's restaurant list.

I think that "Meh. I've experienced better." is a fair assessment. Quite.

This place is great. You can tell the difference with the new owners. They've made a lot of changes and it seems that they're making more for the better. The food is really good, and the service is great. Though I was glad we made a reservation on a Saturday night otherwise we would have had to wait at the bar for a table. Though the bartender is great and a lot of fun so at least it would be a nice wait.

What a great establishment! Stopped in for a snack and a cocktail, stayed because of the great atmosphere and service! I would recommend Tapalaluna to anyone looking for a Tapas experience with great people!

Walked in, and immediately noticed the relaxed, classy setting! Definitely loved the ambiance that this restaurant portrayed. Since it was my first time coming here the waiter was nice enough to go through any questions that we had. The menu has a variety of options from bite size gourmet burgers to full entrees so I decided to to try out the personal portion thai pizza. The portion size was great and tasted even better! For dessert I tried the creme brulee and it was on point. Although it was slightly on the pricier side, I would definitely come back.

A good friend and I decided to devote the start of our evening to some hors d'ouevres at Tapalaluna-- we were not disappointed. Having sampled three different appetizers and a shared entree, I must say that I was very impressed. It was a nice change of pace for a towny, college- filled area. Our entree, an arabica coffee- rubbed filet, was the highlight of our experience. I ordered only one drink from the bar, but greatly enjoyed the margarita which appeared freshly made as opposed to a mix. The service was decent with a cute server to boot. I will definitely be returning. Great atmosphere, VERY ECLECTIC MENU, and reasonably priced (in my opinion). For three appetizers, an entree and four mixed drinks our final bill was only around $60 with tax. Tasty!

Tapalaluna has become a bit of a staple when my friends and I go out. We like the atmosphere -- a step up from the grimy sports bar places around here. The drinks are good (although often the mixed drinks are a touch too strong for my taste, but the bartender has always been willing to fix it when we've asked), and although we don't usually go early enough to eat, the menu looks good so I may try something and come back to update this review. There's also live music often, which is fun.

Just had dinner here today because I heard it opened, but didn't have the chance to check it out. This place is pretty great place considering it's located in DeKalb! The look is contemporary and is very nicely done. It almost seems like it doesn't belong in DeKalb with all their pizza joints and cheap dinner for drinkers after the usual bars. I thought the menu was a little odd since they had a little of all types of food (Italian, Thai, American, etc.) The food was good. we ordered the Thai spring rolls along with the fresh mozzarella with tomato basil bruschetta and the roasted peppers and goat cheese bruschetta. All of that was pretty amazing besides that I would have liked to have sweet and sour sauce with my Thai spring rolls and I thought the spring rolls were more like egg rolls to me. The spring rolls at Thai Pavilion are spring rolls now! After that we decided to go ahead and order the veggie bite sliders and that was pretty great. I wished it had mayo in it though, but it was still pretty good overall. They also had the special sangria of the day which was white sangria made with peach white wine and that was delicious! Our bill ended up being around $35 which is not that terrible, but that's pretty pricey for being located in DeKalb and plus, most of the residents are poor college students, and for the portion size, the prices should be lower. Overall: -food was pretty great for DeKalb -service was great, but then again it was Thursday at 5 and it was pretty dead -prices are a little too high for the location and portion size I would go back to this restaurant especially for a date since there are no nice restaurants in DeKalb that are this fancy. I would recommend going here.

The Kobe beef burgers were excellent.

So I went here with a bunch of my friends for a nice place to eat (little 1.5 year NIU alumni reunion) and i would not go back. Though the atmosphere is nice, I was overall quite disappointed with the food and service. If they want to serve food like a tapas restaurant, I think they should explain to people how the tapas portions are and the staggered timing of the dishes. Some of us ordered tapas, some entrees, and some sushi. They all came out at different times (each plate like 5-10 minutes apart), and our friends who ordered the tapas were surprised by the small portions (which could have been noted by the waiter when we ordered). I loved my blue cheese crusted tenderloin- it was actually very delicious. However, the sushi was an abomination. I don't feel that I'm a sushi snob or anything, but this was actually (we all agreed) the worst sushi we've ever had. A couple were fishy, and one was dry and bland. They really have no business having sushi on their menu. I would not go back, even if the atmosphere is nice. The menu is hit or miss.

Went there only one time for the boyfriend's birthday. Had been recommended to us by other friends. Good things: Atmosphere was nice.. Beautiful decor. The drink menu is on an electronic device (never seen that before). Wine selection is pretty large and the sweet red was delicious. The service from what I recall was good and had no complaints. Things I didn't care for: Good grief it was ridiculously overpriced for such little portions of food. Cant even remember what we had nor how good it was so that should tell you something right there. I just remember thinking that after spending $100 on an appetizer, 2 entres and 3 glasses of wine that we should have gone to Red Lobster in Geneva because at least we would have left full. I was disappointed and felt like I had wasted my money. I don't mind spending at all when the experience is worth the money and for us it just wasn't. End of the day, I'd go back for evening cocktails, but never spending $$$ on dinner again. Sorry Tapa.

I went to Tapa for lunch today, and I really liked it! The atmosphere is really amazing! The decor is very modern and comfortable. Very inviting. I went during my hour lunch break, and I was served quickly so I didn't have to speed eat. There was also live music, so that definitely added to the atmosphere. I ordered the turkey smokehouse panini with waffle fries. I personally do not like fries, but actually loves these! They didn't seem frozen and were seasoned well. Crispy too! The plate was around nine bucks, so it was decently priced for the amount of food received. One suggestion I would make is to have a pick two or three plate. I came by myself and would've loved to try the tapas, however I didn't want to have to pay for a plate of one item meant to share among two or three people.

Went to tapalaluna on a Saturday night and everything about it was great. There was live music that was wonderful. The atmosphere is great, wonderfully decorated. The server was knowledgeable and sweet. Food was great and the price was reasonable especially as far as tapas style dining goes. We ordered 4 beers (although it was just domestic) and 4 small plates to share and the total including tip came to $70. Definitely going back!!!!

What a great find in my travels. Was going somewhere else for lunch but saw live music inside so decided to stop in. I had the white cheddar and steak sandwich. Delicious tender meat and great flavor of horseradish. Parmesian waffle fries were outstanding as well. Slow service but once the order was taken food got out fast. Definitely worth another trip.

I've come to this spot since it opened. The current owners have created a place that has reasonable prices and is relaxed and welcoming. I especially like their beer selection. Their food is always changing, but the hearty items seem to be the best. I recently had the meatloaf, and it was yummy! I'm often there early in the evening, and the service is usually good, but I think it does get a bit hectic later. Overall, they're a great place for both food and alcohol in DeKalb--keep the craft beers coming!

I love coming to this place! The only reason I don't give this place 5 stars is because it is pricey. The food is delicious, but a little over priced for the concept of getting multiple tapas. The food selection is large, and I have not ordered something that I didn't like. The sangria is great and I would recommend this place to others.

Look may be deceiving, the outer and inner design are just excellent! Beautiful wood floors and seating, the big moon definitely adds culture, but the food...it's borderline good. Their pricing is not the greatest considering the amount/flavor but it is good. I think someone said it quite well when they posted on here its like a "Meh, I've had better" kind of experience and their selection isn't all that great. But it is unique to the Dekalb area and so for that I give it credit.

Outstanding service! Rob the bartender is always exceptional and makes the best cocktails. Full bar with lots of wine choices. The chef, Chad, is phenomenal. We watched him carve our ribeye right in front of us - which was seasoned and cooked perfectly. He was willing to make an off-menu item for a member of our group with dietary restrictions as well. Everything was absolutely delicious. The ambiance is wonderful. Being able to watch the kitchen staff prepare your food is such a fun part of your evening. Live music, which is never too loud just adds to the experience.

Your food is great but your service needs to get better. I order coffee with cream last night. I was given the usual single serve containers. After a couple of sips, I noticed chunks of creamer floating in my coffee. The cream they gave me had actually curdled. When I alerted the waitress she said she was sorry. Rather than leave it at that, she gave me the excuse that they do not get many coffee orders there. How about just say you are sorry and not provide an excuse? Unhappy. It was disgusting.
