O’Leary’s Menu

Sorry, We are updating this restaurant menu details.

My wife and I have been here multiple times and have had just an ok experience. Unfortunately the bartender has steered us away. She was more concerned with chatting up her friends than the handful of patrons at the bar. If we want a beer and a quick bite to eat we will be going elsewhere. However, the food is actually delicious. Overall above average bar food. With that being said we may choose this place if we want to dine in with the family. The guests seated away from the bar seemed to be getting just the right amount of attention. I saw the waiter running around from table to table checking in on the guests.

Portions were huge. The beer battered cod was good although the batter was quite salty. Cole slaw was too sweet. Large beer selection with over beers, but 9 of them were sweet and fruity. The wine list is poor, it was graduation weekend, we ordered a wine off the list and they didn't have it. The table behind us ordered wine and they were out of that. Now if you know it's going to be a busy weekend wouldn't you stock up? Loads of families in town this weekend from around the country with money, you missed a golden opportunity.

Good food and awesome beers. Monday through Thursday they have a $5.99 lunch special that never ceases to be disappointing, the turkey club was delish! Stop by here if you are passing by on Lincoln highway!

The only reason I go to O'Leary's is for trivia on Wednesday nights (which is always lots of fun!). My biggest complaint is the service. It is consistently bad. No matter where we're sitting and no matter how many people are in the restaurant, the servers barely even bother to come to the table. A few weeks ago, our server came to the table MAYBE a total of four times during our 2+ hours there, and he didn't even come until we'd already been seated for 20 minutes. Last night, a server didn't come to our table for so long that three of us went to the bar to order our drinks. The bartender seemed irritated that we were ordering through her instead of at our table, even though I explained no one had come by. A server showed up shortly after that, but I'm pretty sure it's just because he got in trouble for not being there in the first place. Anyway, service is consistently poor. The hostess when I'm there always seems disoriented and confused. Food is mediocre, but I don't expect that much out of a bar anyway.

This is the type of local place that I love. That is speaking in general terms because this place is just not very good. We stopped in Saturday looking for a sandwich and a drink. That was our second choice, because Fatty's had a 45 min wait for a table. The good news is that there was no wait here, unfortunately that is because this place is just not very good. It is a nice bar, and maybe if you are just going to have a drink or two it would be fine. I've been here a couple of times and the food has never been great, but it's has not gotten better with time. Having had a couple of blah meals here before, I picked a burger. How tough is it to make a good bar hamburger. Well based on the one I was served, it must be akin to rocket science. I had the smokehouse burger, (burger, bacon, BBQ sauce) not something that should be difficult. Well the burger tasted like a food service patty (think cafeteria) that had been pre-cooked and re warmed. Well mostly re-warmed. I can't be sure if the burger was cold, or the sauce was, but either way it was at best luke warm, The bacon a limp, and thin piece of flab that looked like bacon, but had no noticeable taste. It had the taste of that left over burger that you take for lunch the next day. My GF had a chicken flat bread, and in her words, the toppings were good. The problem is that the crust had the texture of cardboard. I did taste it and I'm glad I had the burger. If you are looking to be underwhelmed, by warned over institutional food, stop here. If you are looking for a good bar and grill go to Fatty's, the Twin Taps, or the Courthouse. If you are just looking for something to eat, get a hot dog off the roller thingy at a gas station, either way you will get a better meal.

Super friendly staff and great homemade food! Huge beer selection too!!!! They always have a three floyds beer on draft unlike any other bars in the area!!!

Great food and beers !! Also the best looking and friendly staff around Dekalb. Service is awesome :)

I'm not sure how best to start this, the service is horrendous. I've been there when they are busy, when they are slow, it doesn't matter food takes forever to come out. If and when you do get your food, it may or may not be hot. I've come in for just a drink, there was a moderate crowd but still had to yell at the bar tender to get his attention. I would understand if the place was packed but he was more interested in the female clientele than serving. I only mention this because this is not unusual for the bar. I have serious questions how they stay in business, the only reason I keep thinking they realize they have a problem and have addressed it. It is sad because it in a great location and has a really nice atmosphere to it.

Try the Cobb Salad!!! The best soups around. Great presentation.

While they have a good beer selection the food is horrid. It is an Irish pub in name only, absolutely no pub grub there and what they do serve is obviously prefrozen and not fresh.

I've eaten at O'Leary's before and it was pretty good. I suggested it to my cousin as we were visiting DeKalb. We both got different meals. She got the Baja Chicken Sandwich and I got the Jameson Irish Pot Roast. Our meals came out almost suspiciously quick and wasn't as hot as it should be if it was cooked that quickly. The food did taste good, though. The main reason why I'm giving this review 1 star is that we both immediately got sick after eating there. We don't know if it was from the food, where the food was stored, the water we drank, an employee, etc., but something was definitely off. Needless to say, we will never be eating here again.

Just stopped in here for drinks.... Great Bacardi and Diets.... Adam was easy on the eyes.... some obnoxious people hanging out at the bar, but thats not the bars fault :) If Im ever in the area again, I will stop back in!

This place has great potential, but every time I have dined here the food and the service has seemed very low quality.

A little introduction: I have been to O'Leary's Several times through out the years my 1st few visits were amazing, great service, great food, and atmosphere. Sadly for awhile they tapered off with lower quality food lower staff count etc see the reviews below, my latest visit was going to determine weather or not I ever came back. The two of us walked in on a Sunday afternoon about 2ish well past the lunch peak, and we greeted by a Hostess in very little time. She seated us in a booth and we placed our drink orders I had a Apple wood Chuck bottle and she had a Soda, Coke I believe. Fearful of our last time I ordered for her the tried and true appetizer platter it came with Mini burgers, cheese sticks and chicken fingers. This combo was not at all disappointing in fact it rocked, then came the BBQ Pulled pork sandwich, this was the reason I started eating here the 1st time I ordered it was simply amazing! This time was almost as good and the best part is they went back to their good fries (last visit they where cheap and awful) with this powerful rebound for the win I give them four stars! Why four and not five you might ask? well the service was slow our server was inattentive and for how dead it was I would love to give them a five star but come on people when there is only two lonely tables in the restaurant pay attention.

We went to O'Leary's tonight with my parents and sister who is a student. We ordered: pot roast (husband), fish and chips (dad), emerald salad and red pepper soup (sister), Burger and onion rings (mom) and French onion soup and a side salad (me). My mom's burger came out with four small onion rings....mind you, she paid extra to "upgrade" her fries. My husband's food was cold, not warm, cold. My sister's salad was brought without dressing. My soup was a laughable portion, I literally ate the whole bowl in five bites, I am not exaggerating and I am not a big eater to begin with. The only redeeming thing they had going for them was my dad's order of fish and a very large serving of chips, which was actually hot. The kicker was when my mom asked for more onion rings and the owner, a dark haired, middle aged woman brought out TWO more on a plate and proceeded to say to my mom "just so you know.....this is our usual portion, FOUR onion rings per order. I brought you TWO more because I want you to be happy, but just so you know for next time" Isn't that generous? TWO more onion rings! We were absolutely blown away by the poor quality of food and even more so by the rude condescending attitude of the owner. She returned later in the meal to ask if things were better and my husband commented that his now warm food was better than her attitude. She stared blankly for a second and turned around without saying a word. No apology for talking to my mother like a petulant child. We are not stupid, nor are we children. We don't appreciate being talked down to. When our bill came I guess I should not have been surprised nothing was taken off. I'm guessing they will need every cent they can get. The place was empty and Lord knows we will never be back! We passed on our original idea of getting the bread pudding for dessert. We were afraid their "usual portion" came with a generous amount of condescension.

An OK place to hang out with friends and have a drink. Service is usually good, but I would say the food is only average and definitely NOT healthy. Every seafood item they have here is deep-fried, even the fish tacos, which traditionally use grilled fish.

So one week later I am finally not so angry that I can write what I hope is in a fashion that depicts what I would call one of the very most terrible examples of customer service that I have ever seen in my 35 years of in the food service industry. It all started when my best friends son decided to get married on the 4th of July. (There was a family emergency that brought the family together. So the kids figured why not?) The brides mom started making calls when the decision was made. And OLeary's said NO PROBLEM we will take care of you. How many will you have? The brides mom said I am not sure... Just give us a ball park figure. She then told them 18 to 20. When we started arriving we were crammed into the far back of the restaurant behind the bar. there were place settings for 21. However our total ended up being 28 with no way to expand. The young lady (I use this term loosely) informed us that we would either have to sit at the bar in order to be close to the family Or we could choose to sit away from the family up in he booths. THAT'S ALL I CAN DO! What about your party room upstairs??? Its being renovated. Then why the sign as you enter that says ask about our party room. SHEESH! The bride was in the corner with two others trying to put up her dress. Same Girl says, You need to move this is a thorough fare you are in the way? I'm sorry can anyone say rude? How about excuse me can I get through? Next: My friends daughter orders two Jr root beer floats for her two small children. Same girl again says: We don't have those! Friends daughter says OK what are your floats like?? Same Girl: They are three scoops of vanilla ice cream in a tall glass topped with root beer. Friends daughter: Oh that is way to much. Can I get a scoop of ice cream in a small glass with the root beer over it?? Same Girl: I have to charge you the same price! Friends daughter: Never Mind We'll all have water. So she gave up a transaction when all she had to say is you know what I will put a scoop of ice cream in two smaller glasses and pour the root beer over it. Hows that? Customer happy and a sale made!!! Same Girl then turns to me and says have you decided on your drinks yet?? I say No not yet. Can you come back in a few minutes? (I was waiting for my husband to arrive) Same Girl: Actually I can not once we start bring food out it will be to difficult to get drinks. I said: That's it I have had enough I got up said my good byes and left. However as a foot note to all this. As we were all trying to get this girl our orders, the original people that got to the restaurant 20 minutes before we had arrived, were just getting their drinks. And my friends sister finally got up and got her own coffee. As we were leaving My 15 year old son said mom the server is in the bar talking about you to that guy. I had to laugh Silly Girl, you shouldn't point. This is not the high school cafeteria! It is a place of business and you just lost a $50+ transaction. This is not the first time I had bad experience at this restaurant. It will however be the last!! Go to The Junction!!! Service is better and food pricing is much more reasonable!!! I wish I could give less then a one star. I would!!!

After living in the area for a year and a half, my husband and I finally decided to try O' Leary's instead of the usual places in Sycamore we've grown tired of. It seemed like there was plenty of staff, and not too many parties eating, but it was by no means empty. We came here around 5:30, and we were seated right away. The server was not far behind, so we didn't wait long at all for our beers and appetizer. Maybe a few minutes for the beers and less than 10 for the mozzarella sticks, which were pretty tasty. After reading through the menu, I decided to get the 8 oz. Sirloin and my husband got the Fish & Chips, and this is why I gave this restaurant only 4 stars - I would've liked to see a ~little more variety, maybe more Irish items, but from what I saw, it was your traditional American pub fare. With my steak, I ordered the fries and cinnamon apples. I ordered it to be cooked medium-well. We did not have to wait very long for our meals to come, not nearly as long of a wait as Applebee's last month. I cut in to my steak, and FINALLY....I got a steak perfectly cooked to order! It was just a little pink in the middle, but overall very juicy and flavorful. Nicely charred with pretty grill marks on the outside. I loved the crunchy onions and the seasoned butter that was on top of the steak. Fries were crispy, (and there were plenty of them!) not too salty and the cinnamon apples were heavenly. My husband devoured his fish and chips, and could not believe he got so much food for $12. The pieces of fish were massive, and he loved every bite. As far as the flavor of my steak goes - my $14 dollar sirloin here at O' Leary's was so much better-tasting than the $40 dollar filet mignon I had at Johnny's Charhouse, by leaps and bounds. And it was perfectly cooked. My idea of medium-well was exactly the cook's idea. The server was always coming by our table, making sure we had enough water, if we wanted another beer, and checking to see how things were. She didn't "disappear", or anything like that which is a sign of a good server, in my opinion. We ordered dessert, and originally we were going to get the chocolate chip pie, but our server politely informed us that they were out of the chocolate chip cookies that went into making it. So, she suggested the chocolate molten cake. I was apprehensive, because I know Chili's and Applebee's does the same thing. But this one was really, really good. Two huge scoops of vanilla ice cream and whipped cream, and then the cake. Very warm and moist, and we ate every bite. The price was what I expected - $56 for two people BUT we did order expensive beers, appetizer, two entrees and a dessert. I would recommend this place, for sure. However, as our server told us, it will be getting busier when the NIU kids come back. Definitely recommend coming here for lunch or dinner.

First of all, I should say that I don't go to O'Learys to drink. I generally go for the food, because my parents like the place, so I'm often there in the afternoon and can't really comment on its nightlife. The salads are all wonderful, the cornbread is tasty, and the french onion soups are salty and hot. The blue cheese burger is an artery-clogging wonder. I've even had fajitas there. Fajitas were not Irish at all, but they were delicious. The spiked coffee is also good. The servers are friendly, although from time to time they seem to have been given too many tables to cover, and are being run a little thin. This is, as I have said, a good place to bring your parents when they visit.

We won't be going back here. The menu looked good and we were seated at a great spot overlooking the street so it started off well. The waitress was nice but didn't really check back very much and we had to ask for refills even when she did. My mom ordered the Spinach and Artichoke flatbread. When it came, she looked in vain for one artichoke and only found one small shred of spinach on the entire thing. Instead, it was just sausage on top of melted cheese. When we told our server, she looked at us blankly and simply said she was sorry that we weren't happy with it. We actually had to suggest that she check with the kitchen and see if she could get it fixed. She came back with a sauce that seemed to have chunks of artichoke and flakes of spinach. Maybe the kitchen forgot to put the sauce on the flatbread? Who knows? I had the bruschetta chicken which tasted fine if too salty. The white cheddar mashed potatoes were delicious. My husband and kids just had burgers and grilled cheese so they were fine with their meals. The main reason I am giving this restaurant one star is because I got sick within an hour of eating there. I spent the rest of the night in the bathroom. No one else in my party got sick so it was limited to just my meal. Still, we won't be going back. It's a shame because it is very convenient to downtown and the theaters.

We've been here for drinks a few times before this weekend. While they are somewhat over priced normally, they have some decent specials during the week. My husband's parents were in town and really like pub fare. We took them there for lunch on Sunday and were very pleased with the food and drinks. 3 of us had burgers and one salad. We were thrilled with all of it - it was just the right amount of food and it was delicious. The only reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5 is because the prices were just a little high for the area.

Nothing special at all. went with a large group on a monday afternoon, had terrible service. food was average at best, as we all ordered different things. Nice and clean restaurant, but if you want a solid bar and grill, head down lincoln highway to fattys. food is much better and dare i say it, even tho fattys is known for slow service, service is better there.

For a college town bar, this place sure is clean. Of course, that means this place gets about zero college crowd, so I'm guessing you don't go here for the jello shots. We were there to eat dinner before a show at the Egyptian Theater nearby. I got the fish tacos. Not real impressed. Fish wasn't breaded and fried, the tacos had grated fake cheddar on them, and the tortillas they came on were paper thin and fell apart as I ate. Also, for $12, you get 3 fish tacos -- that's it. No rice, no beans, no parsley, nothin'. My wife got the Fettuccine Broccoli Alfredo. It was very good, although a little on the heavy side. My brother got the fajitas -- I'd say he had the best of the lot. It looked very good, and he liked it. His girlfriend got the pot roast. It came as a large scoop of mashed potatoes (lots of skin still in the mash), two good-sized slabs of pot roast, and a small bit of carrot and some bits of onion. That was it -- basically meat and potatoes. So, if that's what you're looking for, they've got it. Overall, not worth a special trip, but not a bad place to go if you're visiting your kids -- or waiting for a show at the Egyptian. TIP: Park somewhere near the restaurant if you're going to the Egyptian, it's only a block away. But watch the parking signs, their are all sorts of parking restrictions downtown.

Home of the short pour on your pint! Amazing, but I watched the male bartender (I believe it was Adam) consistently pour pints a good 1/2" short of the rim of the glass. When I mentioned the short pour of my pint to the female bartender working with Adam, her response was "yea, he's been doing that a lot lately" and then she happily topped me off. It wasn't just my pint either. I watched him pour all sorts of glasses short. What's up with that?

First, was there to take my daughter to lunch. There were 4 in the group, just ordered sandwiches and an onion ring and soft drinks no boose. It was over 60 dollars for a lunch. WAY TOO EXPENSIVE! The onion rings were good, and the food is ok for a bar and grill, I had a burger, which was not as good as a fudruckers, and a small amount of fries on the plate, smaller than a Mcdonalds small fry. Just too expensive for average food, and yes the place is clean for a bar, but yes very slow, maybe because the other poeple in town know it;s too expensive to eat at. I know college kids cant afford to eat there.

Typical college town pub. Good food, I would head here at lunch time and you avoid the college kid feel.

WAY Too Salty/Fatty, Dark, but clean. Oddly competent-looking incompetent distracted waitresses. Is anybody there NOT red-faced and bloated in early stages of High BP vascular failure? It's NOT JUST a beer face. As Elizabeth D wisely prophesized (Drunk-parent-killer at 4 stars :) "This is, as I have said, a good place to bring your parents when they visit."

I have given this place too many chances. They are the most overpriced restaurant in town, and the service is always slow. I wouldn't have a problem with their prices if the food was good, but it is not. The last time I was there, I got an Aloha Burger, which was just under ten dollars. The bun was practically stale, and the burger itself was just a measly pre-formed patty like the kind you get frozen from the grocery store. The time before that, I got a barbecue ranch burger and substituted their homemade onion rings for fries. And again, the bun was not fresh, the burger patty was small and dry. The onion rings (which cost an extra two dollars) had way too much batter, and I only got four. I should have known not to come back after the first time, when my friend and I had lunch at the bar. He ordered some kind of vegetarian sandwich and requested guacamole. I ordered a turkey club. Our food took (no exaggeration) over an hour to arrive. My friends order was wrong, and when he brought it to the bartender's attention, the bartender suggested that he pick out the parts that he did not want. When we got our bill, we were overcharged. Nobody apologized, and they acted as if we were inconveniencing them. The only reason I gave the place a second chance was because of the kind response I got from the owners after I emailed a complaint (the first and only time I have ever done this). But it doesn't matter. The food is still bad, the service sucks, and they charge way too much. Unfortunately, these owners have multiple restaurants in Dekalb. Thank God they don't own Upper Deck anymore.

We ate lunch here on a Saturday afternoon with our young children and were served promptly. They do have a kids menu with generous portions (enough to split) and the grownup menu is huge! I suspect that means some things are not as good as others. We had fish and chips and the veggie burger with homemade potato chips. Both were delicious, and they had $3 pints of Blue Moon--yum!

  • Tracy K.

I understand that Dekalb is a college town, but does that necessarily mean that, even at 10PM on a Sunday, the music outside this bar/restaurant must be blaring? And did the shot girls need to hear "no" four times before leaving us alone? The interior of this place was a little quieter, but it was still hard to have a conversation. Its decorated in the typical trying-to-be-Irish fashion. Bathrooms were clean. Our server was perky, but could have been a little more attentive. The shot girls were just plain annoying. My veggie wrap was bland, but the french fries were good. My boyfriend's nachos were gross, even by bar food standards. I could see coming back here for a pint if I was visiting friends in the area, but that's the only way I'd be back.

O'Leary's WAS GOOD several years ago. I remember ordering Baja Fish Tacos, and they were spicy and excellent. The onion rings were huge, covered in a home made batter. Then two years ago, I ordered the fish tacos again. They were grilled instead of fried, dry and bland. I asked the manager what happened, and he said that they modified the menu to be more healthy. Hmmm.. they are an Irish bar... while I can appreciate their efforts, they have lost sight of who they are. The last time I went was last year. I met up with some friends for lunch. Ironically, on this visit I actually did not want anything too greasy, so I ordered some shredded chicken tacos (why do I keep ordering tacos from an Irish Bar???). For $10, I received three dry, bland chicken tacos and that did not even come with a side dish! I did not complain because I was with friends.. I did not want to appear picky around them, so I doused the tacos with their excuse for salsa, then with sour cream to make them somewhat edible, and paid my check. I will go there for a Guinness at the bar. Maybe I will luck out with a good appetizer. As for the kitchen, perhaps Gordon Ramsey should help. The upstairs banquet room is pretty nice... it has a pool table, a private bar, and more booths. It is a great place for a work party, and it can accommodate perhaps 50 or so people. But you will probably be forced to have their kitchen cater the event in order to use the space.

About as Irish as green beer. If you are looking for an even remotely Irish setting or menu... go elseswhere. Waitstaff was disorganized and slow. Service was slow and our food order was not cooked as requested and one person in our party got the wrong side item. All in all... the food was ok if not a little pricey. I just wish there were an actual Irish pub in DeKalb. You don't have to have just an Irish menu... but a few items would help.

O'Leary's is a cozy place in the heart of downtown DeKalb. I love to see the downtown coming along and I think O'Leary's is a wonderful addition. I would highly recommend the chicken tenders and the french onion soup. Both are great!

My bride and I've been to O'Leary's several times and I wish I could give O'Leary's at least an 'A-OK' as I like the ambience of wood though it's light wood, I'm a man and real men love dark wood) but when it comes to their menu, portions and the food's pizzaz I've experienced much better. Maybe it's just me but I find the menu boring. A good menu to me is where I'm in great stress because there are so many things. Not so at O'Leary's it is the opposite, I'm stressing as to what to settle for. My most recent visit I had the A1 peppercorn burger and was reminded I'm not a fan of O'Leary's. It was about an 1/8" think on a ho-hum bun. The side of fries probably smaller than a medium size fry at the place named after a clown. Truth is I felt like it was a meal from Mac's and if not for the meat being somewhat more tastier I would think they ran to Macs. My bride had the salmon and though she enjoyed it was average at best. Considering the small portions and the lack of pizazz to the overall prep, I've had much better burgers for the price and those burgers had larger sides. Then when it comes to desert, talk about boring! There is only four items and one of them is bread pudding. OK the Irish are big on bread pudding but it was boring enough to skip and I'm a kid when it comes to desert. The ambience is very nice, nice big square bar, booths, TVs. It' clean and he staff is friendly and most of the times attentive but all those pluses don't add up to overcoming the blah of the boring menu, little baby bear portions and the food's lack of being yum yum 4da tum tum and ho-hum food and it is those items that make a Scottie Bear place a 3 - 4 star place. The going out the door on O'Leary's if your out walking and it's raining and your hungry I'd say it be worth going in the door.

a really nice establishment with good service unlike the place down a few stores. The food and atmosphere here was a lot better although it is too modern of a bar for me. They had booth seating that I did not notice until I was leaving so it is more like a restaurant . The statue of a cow in the front greets visitors and reminds people they are only like sixty miles away from Chicago. Plenty of televisions to catch a good sports action

  • Nathan W.

My wife and I loved this place. It was out favorite restaurant in Dekalb hands down. I'd crave the California chicken sandwich, and the loaded mashed potatoes were unbelievable. Then, one day, we go to our favorite restaurant... and it's apparently been hijacked by a lunatic. The entire menu was changed. All our favorite items were gone. The prices jumped exponentially. The portion sizes dropped to below their borderline, but perfectly acceptable, levels. It was $50 for us (two people) to eat lunch. And we were still hungry. The five french fries I got with my sandwich just didn't quite hit the spot. We're done with this place until we hear that the old menu is back. It I wanted to spend $50 on not getting satisfied, thinking about food I can no longer get, I'd just watch the Bears at home with a couple bottles of Crown wishing I had a McRib.
