So my girlfriend and I decided to go through the drive through tonight and whoever was working it was ignorant from the start. My girlfriend started our order and after the very first thing she says "Is that it?" Like trying to rush us. My girlfriend says 'No.' And continues to order. Next, we try and order a Butterfinger and banana shake. 'You want what?' Like we just did something wrong by asking for a mixed shake. Then my girlfriend asks her what came on a certain number and she responds with; "Like what normally comes on a cheeseburger...lettuce,onion,tomato..." My girlfriend then said we don't want anything anymore because she's being very rude. She responds with "Okay." Well okay you just lost our business and received this review, avoid this place, very ignorant staff. Thursday 8/27 around 9:30 pm. Whoever was working drive through, you ma'am, are very ignorant.

Conveniently located next to Downer's Delight and First American Bank. This place as many of its chain honestly can be rated at a 3 or more star mark. They use real beef, which is nice and I love, love, love their Milk shakes. Quick meal and customer friendly

Man, I missed Steak n Shake. This was one of my "must visit" places on my recent trip to Chicagoland. I ordered my favorite- the Frisco Melt. Nom. The fries were just as good as I remembered. The service was great- it was a Friday at lunchtime but they had plenty of staff and things moved quickly.

I came here with my mother, my sister, and my great-aunt. My mom and my great-aunt were very pleased with their shakes, but my sister and I were not so thrilled about our dinner. My sister got a garlic burger of some kind, and she said that there was so much garlic on it that she couldn't finish it without wondering if she was going to smell like garlic for a week. I ordered a hot dog, and the fruits were very good, but the hot dog seemed like it was room temperature. There was something about it that didn't seem to taste right, but I thought at first it could have been due to stuffy sinuses, since that can affect taste. By the time I got to the car, my stomach wasn't feeling the best. The girl that served us was super sweet, though! I know my great-aunt likes to go here before we go grocery shopping, so I am sure I will be back. I guess I will have to reconsider what I order next time.

This is the slowest drive thru I have ever experienced! I'm sitting at the drive thru right now and it's been 7min since the girl told me to hold on one second. I am still waiting and wondering if there is only one person working in this location. There are 2 cars behind me. The only reason I am being generous with the stars is because they do have really good shakes but the service could not be any slower!!!!

I like a good burger, but I don't think they should all be judged on the same scale. McDonald's 99cent McDouble is a fairly mediocre product, but the fact that it's on the value menu makes it a pretty good deal. I think you have to apply a sliding scale -- how well does it deliver given its context? Steak 'n Shake's special Jalapeno Crunch Steakburger destroys its big market fast food competition at places like BK and McDonalds, giving a nice complexity of flavor with pickled jalapenos, chipotle mayo and French fried onions. At $5 including shoestring fries, it's an impressive value. I'd prefer a little higher beef to bun ratio, but it's certainly par for the course for mass market burgers. I don't think $5 will get you anywhere close to this amount of flavor at the arches, the king or the ginger. By additional comparison, when you consider that you could easily drop $9 or $10 for a burger and fries at Five Guys, Meatheads or Smashburger, the money here is well spent, though I feel you'll get better ingredients for the higher prices at each of those places. Steak n' Shake, like Winstead's in KC, serves elevated fast food in a throwback environment. There's a definite niche for this type of burger, and I hope it doesn't disappear.

There are few things I like less than dry, gritty, old baked beans, but that is just what I got tonight. I had a waitress that must have worked to many hours and her customer service was lacking to say the best. She brought me the most disgusting bowl of baked beans. I mentioned to her I wasn't going to eat them and she could take them away and if she would please take them off my bill. Needless to say they sat in front of me through dinner. She also didn't take them off my bill even though I reminded her. Good part!! I took a picture and showed the manager he took ten dollars off my bill and said he would train his staff on what should be brought to the table. I was so glad he was willing to work with me I gave the grummpy waitress a 20% tip on the origional bill. Someone needs to spread a little cheer.

I haven't eaten at a Steak 'n Shake in years. I must pass this location 10 times a month for the last 6 years and only once before stopped for a shake. My partner and I made a very last minute choice to get dinner here. When noticing the drive through line was a little long, we decided to order at the counter to go. The employees were quite friendly and quick for service. I think we waited less time by doing this then waiting in the drive through. The burgers were excellent and cooked perfectly. I love their fries, yet we felt a little shorted in the to go boxes... as they weren't even full. It will be worth a dine in visit for a better, true assessment.

This place is easy to miss. I actually gave up and was on my way back when I spotted it. The double burger was great. The taste couldn't be beat. The fries were razor thin. But the whole plate with the food seemed a little small. The service was fast. The waiter was a little screwy. But he works in a hamburger joint. What do you expect. The only thing is that I forgot about the table service. Was the food that good that it deserves a tip. Not really. I can think of a dozen places off the top of my head that have better food and give you more for the money. If I have to shell out for a tip, it better be a nice restaurant. Not a burger joint.

Horrible customer service! don't go there if you are in a hurry. I went at 3:30 there were 2 cars ahead of me in the drive through. 1st car waited 10 minutes. 2nd car waited 12 minutes. when they got their food, they handed it back so obviously after waiting that long the order still got messed up! Then, I got to the window. did not get a greeting at all. Mind you, I only ordered one shake. Waited 3 minutes, still no greeting or "i'm sorry it will be a minute" Honked the horn, still no response. There were at least 4 people in there working. I finally just drove off. wtf.

Like most of my fellow reviewers, I find no surprises at this S&S Food is fine. The dining room needs more oversight. It is not always as clean as it could be, but it is acceptable. Wait staff experience varies greatly depending on who you get. Some are great, some not so great. The layout of the place is odd between the booths and tables. Booths are worn and overused. Tables don't seem to offer much privacy. Also, checking out can be a long ordeal with lines. In summary, good food, but mediocre human interaction. I never really feel welcome there.

This place would get a higher rating if it was a bit better at cleaning up. Food is okay, I wouldn't really go out of my way usually for their food. The shakes are the real selling point I think for them. I recently took my son here after school for the half-price shakes and that's a deal you just cannot beat. The fries are the "skinner" version of fries but that's fine with me. The burgers can be a bit of hit and miss. Last one I had was a "double" but came out more like 1.5 burgers - not sure if the other .5 escaped or the waitress had a snack on her way to our table! I think it perhaps fell apart on the grill when they fried it and they just didn't notice - it was busy that day and the person grilling perhaps had a lot going on? Staff here is also so-so, kind of like they are just showing up for their job so don't expect too much but there are times you meet someone that does smile and welcomes you. I'm not saying they are rude because they are not, they are just your typical burger joint workers.

I've been to this location several times and they never disappoint me, but that's not to say they impress me either. I get exactly what I expected. Came last night around 6pm and it was a packed house. We were seated pretty quickly and the waitstaff was able to seat us quickly with a high chair request. I love that Steak n Shake is pretty kid friendly with paper mats and crayons. The waiter was able to take our drink and food order very quickly and get started. We were served with our food within 10 minutes. Came back to check up on us a few times. Overall, a decent experience. We live pretty close to this location so we'll be returning soon I'm sure.

Clean, good food (exactly what I have come to expect from Steak and Shake) Experienced super poor service from waiter and manager at this location though :( Full order never made it to table (only 2 of us), check incorrectly computed, rather than apologize - Manager gave us attitude as she corrected it
I've ate here for lunch/dinner many time and I enjoy their burgers every now and then. Their burgers tend to be somewhat greasy but it's that the point of this place. I really do like the fries and they totally taste better when you eat them there because they get soggy if you drive-thru. Shakes, Shakes, Shakes...I've tried a few flavors and they've all been excellent. Something about real ice cream makes those shakes that much better. Recently, in the last 2 weeks I've dined-in for breakfast and I thought the food was inexpensive and on par with a Denny's. Basically it's a step above McDonalds or Burger King, but it not as good as breakfast place. I've never had a problem with service when I dined-in. Obviously drive-thru can be a little bit of a wait because everything is made to order. I think that's an acceptable trade off for better shake or burger

I love their burgers cuz they're thin yet juicy. I also loves their fries cuz they're thin. But my fave is their shakes! I love that you can get different flavors side by side or get candy mixed into the shakes. I really like the banana flavor and they even put real banana chunks in it. Yummy! Same goes for the strawberry! I also received excellent service here today for lunch. The waiter gave us the wrong flavor shake that belonged to another table, so he comped us the shake even after he brought the right one out 5 seconds later! That was really nice of him cuz I really didn't expect him to do anything. It was an honest mistake and I didn't think anything of it. But great way to make up for a small mistake! That's what you call wonderful customer service!

Do you ever have a place that you go to every 3 to 4 years and then ask yourself "why is it we hardly ever come to eat here?" Steak and shake is that place for me. The food is really good, the shoestring fries are always good, but the service is freaking lousy! Granted we went there on a Saturday night at 7 o'clock so they were kind of busy. It was apparent very quickly that they were understaffed, probably some of their minimum wage teenagers called off because of the holiday. So after you wait 10 minutes to be seated, another 10 minutes to get any recognition from your waitress that she sees you, and then you never received any utensils or napkins you know that's a service meltdown for me. See you in another couple years.

Love Steak N Shake! We stop here whenever we come this way as there are none closer (need one IN Chicago!) food is always tasty, coffee is fresh, and their milkshakes are made fresh every time. Only one server today -Kathy- to run restaurant and drive-thru so had a few minutes longer of a wait than usual. But she kept the coffee refilled and was very pleasant. Our food was tasty - pancakes didn't even have a chance to get cold before they were gone. Royale Steakburger was juicy with egg cooked just right and the silver dollar Hashbrowns were crispy. Overall good experience today! We will stop again on our next trip into the area.

Being served a FILTHY plate, Water tastes like it comes out of a dirty faucet and there is stuff floating around in our water. Me and my boyfriend ordered the garlic double steak burger with Parmesan fries. We get a regular burger with regular fries. All they did was switch the buns and dumped Parmesan on the fries just a big pile of it on the fries. Disgusting. I will never come back to this location for a very long time.
