This place is great! Traveling through with 3 kiddos, we found this place through Yelp. What a neat find! All they have are burgers, fries and drinks, with ice cream cones and shakes for dessert, but what great burgers they were! The fries were heavenly- seasoned with garlic and really really tasty. And they weren't kidding about the family size bag- it really was in a large paper bag ! The decor was inspiring - complete with a bazooka and the front of a jeep. It's all Marine Corp inside. We were there at lunch time and the line was out the door most of the time. Service was quick and friendly. So glad we stopped, and we'll stop there again on our way through sometime!

Stopped for an early lunch on our way to Urbana. Not too far off the interstate; got lucky and found a parking space next to the building. Order quickly taken; under $10 for a burger, double burger, fries, iced tea and bottled water! Had to get a shake, too. Under $3 for one of the best I've had. Appreciated the large straw! You have to wait a bit for your food, but it's worth it.

Worth the wait for the food! You can't go wrong with a regular cheeseburger and Gross Fries some of the best food I've had from a small burger joint.

We were a little leery going to a place called Gross' Burgers, but we had a teenager with us and he was positive that's where we should go. The staff was fantastic! Clearly it was not their first day! The place was pretty busy for 8 o'clock at night and the staff didn't flinch and more importantly they didn't make us feel like we needed to rush. We felt just as important as the next person. The food was delicious and the fries were plentiful. Shout it to Dalton and Mercedes they were delightful.

Gross' is gross, gloriously gluttonous, and totally worth the detour. This place is about as greasy spoon, whole-in-the-wall as it gets. And that's exactly what you want in a great, simple burger joint. The menu is brief: burgers/cheese burgers, Gross fries, ice cream, fountain drinks. That's it. Oh, and a fish sandwich, but who cares. The burgers are grilled on the flattop, smashed down super thin so they get nice and crispy on the edges, and the cheese is steam melted with a lid over it (as it should be). Onions: diced. Cheese: american or mozzarella. Fries: garlic salted (perfect). Decor: Military proud American. Ambience: Ughhh... The place is filthy and I wouldn't look too close at the floors or crevices or kitchen, but you'll be too busy eating the best burger you've ever had to notice or care. If you're passing through Danville, IL do yourself a favor and drive a couple blocks past the sad Burger King and get yourself a Gross burger and fries. I suggest a double cheese (american) with onions and mustard and ketchup, and sprinkle a little of the spicy season salt on your fries (you won't need ketchup), and enjoy. Guzzle lots of water after to stave off the dehydration from all the sodium and once you've digested do a few laps around the block so you don't slip into a gluttonous food coma.

I always stop here when I go hiking at Kickapoo, but I'll admit that I've made the drive to Danville just for a Gross' Burgers burger and shake. They make a particular style of burger that I've had at some other small-town establishments where the patty is super thin and almost crispy on the edges. It's great and I can't get enough. I'll even admit to doubling up on the shake order every now and then...you won't tell, right? That said, this place has some special decor. I explain the whole place to people by saying it has amazing burgers and a bazooka on the wall. They apparently grind their own meat in-house because they're just that hard core. Make sure you call ahead if you want to go through the drive through- they don't take orders at the window. Also, don't bother asking for things like tomato or lettuce when they ask what you want on top...they only have condiments and pickles.

Wanting to visit here for a long time....Fellow Yelpers got it correct. Great burgers, moist and tasty buns, and very good fries and huge and I mean HUGE helpings of fries. About 1 & 1/2 times what you get in McDonalds large order. We will return again when we pass this way again.....

Great burger! Tastes fresh and cooked really well. Only disappointment was they they don't have lettuce and tomato.. What burger place does that?? Fries are pretty average, only thing that sets them apart is the garlic salt. Not too bad but would be better if they were fresh cut, as apposed to vendor bought. Strawberry shake was really good, definitely recommend getting a shake over a drink. You won't be disappointed. Overall good experience, friendly, and fast.

Hole in the wall burger joint, but really good. "French" style burgers..they are flattened and seared. I always get a banana shake cause I mean where else can you get a banana shake...and they give you a ton of fries.

Can't comment on the food as we walked in the restaurant and our shoes stuck to the filthy floor and we turned around and walked out the door. It was almost 2:00 and there wasn't anyone in the place but yet the employees hadn't bothered to clean up the lunch rush. There was spilled drinks on the floor along with dropped food. Not one table was clean they all had leftovers all over them. Have a hard time believing that the floor had been cleaned in a LONG time. If that's the impression they want the customer to see first I can't imagine what the kitchen must look like. No thanks

THIS PLACE IS AWESOME! You get a freshly ground burger, grilled to perfection! They give you a whole sack of fries with your order and best of all they are affordable. The only negative thing I have to say about it is the parking lot is small and hard to find a spot but that's because the place is always packed with customers. One of my all time favorite places to eat!

This place surprised me. The burger was excellent and the fries had a great garlic flavor. If you are a former Marine or any Military branch the props and decorations are very cool.

Best in the USA ! This needs to be on tv! Unreal burger, shake w elephant straw and fries at a phenomenal low price. Thank you it was awesome on my way thru Illinois !

Burger was pretty good, Krekel's in Decatur is maybe a bit better but comparable. I liked the garlic salt on the fries but the fries were not good, too crispy or overcooked, could have been a fluke but it is not hard to cook frozen fries right. Interesting displays of military stuff on the walls, although the bumper sticker implying that without the Marines we would all be able to read Arabic was a bit much. Was there an existential invasion the Marines fought back that I missed?

It's clear this place is a local favorite, and compared to other selections in Vermillion County I can see why. There were a fair number of things that I wish were different, and that keeps this place far from a 5 star experience (it's probably close to 3.5 for me), but again, it's clear that when you compare this place to the other local selections they're doing better than most. So first, the shakes were A-MAZ-ING!! I would go back just for a shake. So good! The fries were crispy and delicious shoestring style, but way over-salted (and I love salty fries). The burger was the most disappointing part of the experience. They do not offer any lettuce or tomato, it's burger, cheese, bun (I got ketchup and mayo as well). So right away I'm lacking some flavor. The burgers are cooked on a flat top (similar to Stake n' Shake if you've eaten there). The problem is that they go a little overboard with the spatula squishing, so the burger has no moisture at all. It's super dry, flavorless, hockey puck style beef. Maybe there's a beef quality issue there, too, honestly no way to tell the way it's cooked. The bun was soft and cheese was good. And the ratio of meat to bun and cheese was good. I'm disappointed to admit I've had better burgers at Wendy's. Maybe they were having an off day? I'll definitely be back. The service was excellent. I love that they have a pick-up window for call aheads, but it seemed clear that answering the phone was not their first priority at 12:30pm. Others have commented on the decor and atmosphere. I was surprised to see a variety of uniformed service members dining there on a random Tuesday afternoon, and glad for the opportunity to thank them for their service.

Great local hamburger joint. I have never been disappointed in Gross burgers and can thank my husband for showing me this jewel of a hamburger place! The burgers are flat and crispy and are slightly reminiscent of steak n shake burgers, however these are tastier and not dried out like steakburgers can be. I always get the mozza burger with grilled onions, a crispy juicy flat pressed pattie with mozzarella cheese and diced grilled sweet onions. Their shakes are awesome as well and the garlic seasoned fries come in a huge amount that begs you to dig in and enjoy!

The best burger & fries I've had. Just as good as Five Guys or In-N-Out Burger, but at a fraction of the price. I recommend the pizza burger with fries.

Wow. What a great burger! Basic burgers great taste. The sign says the meat is ground daily. We came off the interstate a bit for it, but it was worth it.

Oh yum!!!! This place is awesome!!! I had a work assignment in Danville, IL, and I was trying to find a place to eat at. A coworker searched on yelp and found this place; the outside is not the prettiest of decors. I was very hesistant; however, after all the great reviews, I decided to go try it. I ordered a cheeseburger, fries, and a small drink; the total was only $5.22! You can't get cheaper than that! The burger is flat and awesome; the fries are good, but it was pretty salty (hence the 4 stars instead of 5). They had cheyenne pepper and garlic salt for the fries, if you'd like. I recommend this place to anyone; it's really good and definitely worth the stop if you are in Danvile. It's pretty close to the highway (couple of miles).

My wife and I found this place on Yelp! while running some errands in Danville, and wanting a quick burger. We walked in to the sound of "The Moody Blues" on the radio -- Gotta be a good place! This is a really simple spot, small and friendly, with a menu that really concentrates on burgers -- very tasty burgers. You can get them with from one to three patties, with or without cheese, as a "pizza burger", etc. The patties are smashed thin and wide, and develop lovely crispy edges. These aren't the "thick and juicy" burgers (that can also be quite good) sold by other restaurants. The buns are good, toasted as I recall. My first trip, I had a double cheeseburger. My second, a double pizza burger. I think the menu has a chicken or fish or something-like-that sandwich, but I'm guessing that's just for the tourists. :-) The fries are good, though not my favorite style. Tip: I usually ask for my fries "extra crispy", but that's not a good plan here, as they have better body, texture, and flavor when done just the way they normally do them. On the tables are makeshift shakers of a couple of powders (garlic and chili) to be sprinkled as desired on sandwich and/or fries. Ambiance: It's a burger joint. You order at the counter and go find a table. There's classic rock playing over the audio system. The place is decorated with US Marines posters, news clips, "ammunition", etc. When we're in the area, this has become our spot for a quick and tasty burger.

A favorite stop if we're south of Danville, IL. The burgers are fantastic and very fresh. No heat lamps.........off grill, on bun, in box. You're eating it seconds later and you'll be in burger heaven. The fries are seasoned with garlic salt, which is a different twist and tastes great. Also fun war memorabilia to look at while you eat.

Fresh beef, super clean restaurant, dirt cheap prices. It is owned by a ex military man and the restaurant runs smoothly- even when busy. The burgers are thin and caramelized over a scorching hot flattop. The flavor is fantastic. My favorite burger place in the USA so far.

Burgers. Fries. Milkshakes. All done perfectly. When I asked the hotel workers "Where should I go to eat which is local in Danville?" They all said "Gross' Burgers!" without hesitation. I had a single cheeseburger, a small order of fries, and a vanilla shake. The burger was pressed flat (like Steak N Shake) but not too flat, and had nice crisp edges. It was still juicy. the bun was nicely toasted and ketchup and mustard (I'm a purist) were applied evenly. The fries came straight out of the fryer, were liberally seasoned with garlic salt, and then dumped into the bag. You get a TON of fries, even with the small! Each table has 2 small containers, 1 of garlic salt and 1 of cayenne pepper, should you need extra seasoning for your fries. My handspun vanilla milkshake was heavenly. It's served with a super fat straw that I've previously only seen used for bubble tea. The flavor was great-sweet but not syrupy-and the consistency was just thick enough yet still drinkable. The interior is US Marines themed. It has murals painted on the walls, a Jeep with working headlights above the door, machine guns and shell casings on display, along with commendations, posters, and other memorabilia. Rock and roll plays on the radio. I really dug this place. The interior was loud-ish but not to the point that you can't conversate. The open kitchen and music provide a nice level of background clatter. They don't serve tap water here because of the nearby chemical plant. Knowing this, I would suggest you go with bottled water or a shake!

Excellent pizzaburgers. So big a fork is needed. Each time I return to the area, I make sure to stop here for a meal. Quality burger, lots of pizza sauce and cheese.

If I lived nearby I would be eating here often. The fries are plain, just like I like them. I have no idea why places serve those 'seasoned' fries. Nothing like that here, though. I am a french fry lover and these shoestring fries were PERFECT! Not too greasy, not too dry, not too mushy, not too crispy. I got a double cheeseburger which had an really good flavor; like something you'd get on a boardwalk or fair. The decor is kind of like 50's diner meets retired Marine. There's part of a Jeep up by the ceiling and an M2 Bazooka mounted up on the wall (there's an assortment of inert rounds in the window, only one of which is for the M2 by the way...) I would consider this a 2-star class eatery; it's really a fast food joint but obviously miles above the likes of McD's etc. That said, it rates 5/5 for that class! If I am ever in the area I WILL be back here.

This restaurant was established in 1982. Think about it - it's been in business for 26 years with the name GROSS' BURGERS. That should tell you something, in and of itself. Whenever I'm around Danville or Westville (usually at least once a year) I make sure to make the trip to Gross' Burgers for a quick meal. It's well worth the trip; if I lived closer, I'd be here at least once a week. Now, the place is a little eccentric. The owner is a retired Marine and Vietnam vet, and the decor is ... well, it'd probably trigger a flashback in the flashback-prone. The walls are covered in posters and signs about the Vietnam War, the Marines, and so on. A rack full of informational pamphlets is present. In a display case are Gross's old uniforms (and bigass knives!), in one corner is a huge artillery round, and in the cubbyhole above the door is a whole diorama - a junglescape with a jeep, a bazooka, and a big machine gun of some sort - all pretty authentic-looking. Don't let this turn you off though, because you'd be missing some of the best damn burgers on the planet. Generally, I get the All-American, which is a triple (!) cheeseburger, fries, and a 44oz drink. This costs the vast sum of just over $6. Unbelievable. The fries are truly outstanding - he uses garlic salt, so they have a slightly seasoned flavor. They come in a little bag, but then about as many fries are in the meal bag as are in the fry bag itself. Really, what I'm saying is that you get a LOT. And they're GOOD. The burgers... wow. Gross grinds the meat daily, and it really shows. They're made greasy-spoon style, each patty seemingly somewhere around a quarter-pound, though I'm honestly a pretty bad judge of these things. Succinctly, the patties are huge and they cook up with delicious crispy edges, just like a greasy spoon burger should. So yes, by my estimation, this means that in my $6 All-American, I'm getting a crapload of meat, cheese, and goodness. The burger completely fills up the foam container it comes in. Finally, with the owner being ex-Military, he runs a tight ship. They have the cleanest bathrooms I've ever seen, and the health inspection report he proudly displays shows that he received a 99%. Think of the ramifications - this is a *greasy spoon* place that gets almost a flawless report. So yeah. This place is a little small-town treasure, and completely worth the 5 minute trek off I-74. Watch out - from the north, you can almost miss it, since another sign pretty well blocks this one. So yeah. Gross' Burgers. Who woulda thunk it.

This is a REAL BURGER JOINT. This reminds me of the places I used to visit as a kid, before McDonald's, and the other franchise places. GREAT BURGERS good fries. My favorite p=lace to get a burger fries and Pepsi in the area. You MUST taste them to believe how good they really are, compared to the franchise competition. This place is small, nothing fancy, just really really good.

DISCLAIMER: Couldn't post a comment without rating, but I've not been there. Read on. So disappointed....we're from the Chicago suburbs and were in Danville on Sunday, Oct. 16 for an event. After research on many different sites, I couldn't wait to try Gross' Burgers. It was nowhere near where we needed to go (about 15 miles out of our way after a nearly three hour drive) and they were closed at 4pm Sunday! This Yelp posting still says it's open daily 11am to 8pm so I don't know what to think. Too bad they don't have a website, but I guess I should have called ahead. Don't know when I'll ever be back in the area. Just a heads up to others . . .
