West River Cafe is a nice little spot right off Kedzie. I came here with a larger group with younger kids and they pushed together tables very quickly and were very cheerful. They even made little strawberry shakes for the younger kids in the group, just because and on the house. That was really nice of them. Everyone ordered the breakfast items and seemed to be very happy with their orders. I happened to order a chicken caesar salad and it was HUGE. Very good quality chicken and tasted very good. This is an inexpensive spot to grab brunch. Stop by if you want to be full and still have money left in your pocket.

Great place and nice and cozy.. Me and the wife went there had the steak and eggs and she had the chops and eggs.. And was satisfied to the fullest.. Going back every chance we get!!

I'm a firm believer in adding avocado to just about anything and one of my favorite breakfast items is eggs Benedict. You add avocado to that and I'm in heaven. I no longer needed to glance over the menu once I spotted my avocado eggs benedict. It was served with a good portion of hash browns. Definitely left feeling stuffed. My friends had the manager's special: two eggs, two pancakes, two sausage links served with hash browns, and an order of french toast. They both enjoyed their food and it was decided we'd come back again. The cafe isn't huge but you have your choice of seating from booths, tables and a stool at the counter. The staff were all very friendly and attentive. Was't very busy when we there at 9 this morning but I'm guessing this place fills up after 10. Reasonable prices, quick service, clean, and good food, can't really ask for anything more in a place.

Eggs, eggs, eggs in everything! When I ordered an array of sides, but no eggs, the waitress seemed genuinely startled. The hashbrowns and bacon were, well, hashbrowns and bacon. The coffee was coffee. Nothing spectacular, but nothing wrong, either. The food was served on mismatched plastic plates and bowls. Any kitschiness in the cute, worn-down decor is purely unironic. The price is definitely right. If you just want some solid, no-frills food for a decent price, in a clean neighborhood place, go here. If you want a cutesy, upscale brunch place, go somewhere else.

Great place for breakfast! A classic Chicago neighborhood diner. I go for breakfast during the week when I'm in the area before babysitting my grandkids. The two waitresses are cheerful and friendly, and very service-oriented. Love the coffee, the hash browns, the French toast, but my all-time favorite is the avocado eggs Benedict. Even the hollandaise sauce is excellent--tastes homemade. And they have real Louisiana hot sauce, not just Tabasco. Another plus--they open at 6 a.m.; most places don't open that early. Love this place!

This was a snowy morning in late February, but Rosa J. and her hubby were still energetic and wanted breakfast. Since traffic everywhere was congested due to the harsh weather condition, we took it slow and headed to West River Cafe. Like many other joints in Albany Park, I passed through this establishment many times while riding the CTA 78 (Montrose) bus. Again, what a discovery! It's located on the corner of Montrose and Kedzie, diagonally across from the Walgreens. The waitress was cool and attentive. We received our coffee immediately upon sitting down. There are many vegetarian-friendly items on the menu. Hubby LOVES avocados, so he picked the avocado Benedict. I'm a "Benedict" junkie, too (the food, not the former Pope), so I had the Florentine Benedict. The items on the menu are priced reasonably, comparable to the "semi-nearby" popular competitions (The Kronor and Bryn Mawr Breakfast Club...even though I would say "The Kronor" is slightly more expensive). However, West River Cafe is one of the a few quality breakfast joints in Albany Park. Both avocado Benedict and florentine Benedict were super on point! The eggs were poached perfectly, and the hollandaise sauce was delicious. Our hash browns had good texture and were cut into a good "bite-size." There's also a TV there, so we could pay attention to the local traffic since it appeared to be ultra-dysfunctional this morning. They do accept credit cards; paid street parking is available on Kedzie. If utilizing public transportation, the CTA 78 (Montrose) drops you off at Montrose and Kedzie; CTA Kedzie Brown line station is a couple of blocks north of West River Cafe. With that being said, I will be certainly be back!

We went on a Saturday, at a morning-ish hour, for brunch. The food was fine, and I came away full, but it took a very long time to order, get our food and get out of there. I know brunchy weekends are busy, but an hour wait for food is a bit much.

I may have gone on an off day, but....sub-par service, corned beef hash from a can, and mediocre bacon.

This has been my go-to breakfast and brunch spot since moving to Albany Park. The servers are super nice, the food is super good and plentiful for the price. I rotate between the benedicts, skillets and the biscuits and gravy. Beware, however, the B&G is big enough to keep you full all day, so maybe go lighter if you have late lunch or dinner plans.

Great place if you are hungry for some eggs. It's a diner with a variety of plates and specials. Service is fast and food comes out fast too. I've tried the Huevos rancheros which were just ok. Rice and sauce tasted like it was from a can but eggs and tortilla were good. My son had the chocolate chip pancakes and he really did like those. Place is a little divvy but kid friendly for sure. Plus, while packed, it was fairly easy to find a seat on a late Sunday morning. Prices were a little higher than I would expect but again...if you're in the area, this will do.

In a restaurant. In a west end town... ...a dead end world. The east end boys and west end girls. West River Cafe... (dun dun dun dun) Too many shadows, whispering voices. Mundane menu with too many choices. If, When, Why, What. A boring diner - anything interesting you got? West River Cafe...(dun dun dun dun)

When I moved from Lincoln Square from Albany Park, I wasn't sure if I'd find a good go-to brunch/breakfast place. I won the jackpot by landing just a few minutes' walking distance from West River Cafe. Phew! West River is your classic neighborhood diner. Warm, welcoming, tasty, and not pretentious at all. You will not find bloody mary bars, or bottomless mimosas (or any alcohol for that matter) here. Nor will you find maple bacon doughnut holes or trendy gourmet breakfast items. But what you WILL find is hearty breakfast and brunch options, a comfortable environment, always friendly service, and reasonable prices. Full disclosure, I've only eaten here for breakfast. I would like to try it for lunch as I suspect it would be a hearty lunch too. Full disclosure #2, I do not eat eggs or cheese, so I can't comment on the omelets or burritos though when I take visiting family here, they are very complimentary about those menu options. So, based on what I've ordered, you cannot go wrong with the pancakes, waffles, french toast, or sausage here. They have a large breakfast menu but also specials and neither disappoints. Tasty every time. But the charm of West River is not *just* the food. It's also the experience. The service is friendly and I think we've had the same 2 waitresses each time. Both treat you like a regular. I usually only go out for breakfast when people are visiting but think I'd feel equally comfortable pulling up a stool to their counter and enjoying breakfast solo. West River Cafe is the real-deal, and much more comfy than some of the places in Lincoln Square.

Love the food, great atmosphere but felt kind of ignored my waitress was usually very attentive and nice to me and my child but recently she has been not as great as when I first moved in the neighborhood. Only tip: improve your customer service .

Defiantly not a place for a crowd nor if you have a few little ones, as I experienced on my visit; waitress was getting annoyed. Waitress was in such a rush to take our order which she could easily see that none of us had actually taken a glance at our menus. Food had a great taste ( egg tacos) beans were defiantly a bit stale. Kids pancakes were defiantly a hit with the kids. Food overall was good but service was in need of improvement but maybe it was just one of them days for that particular waitress. Some children also picked up on the waitress disturbance. I would definitely try them again & this time try some coffee ( another negative on the waitress part, didn't bother to ask what we wanted to drink )

Great service and nice staff. Kind of dirty atmosphere, the back of the restaurant wreaked of cigarette smoke. Food was super average for a vegetarian but my bf loved his chicken dish.

This corner cafe is super low key. They have prompt service and the food comes out before you can blink. Their gyros omelette with feta cheese is terrific. We will be back!

Great diner place that you can easily walk in on a Saturday or Sunday morning for a table with no wait. This is just a few blocks from where my boyfriend lives and he's a frequent visitor, and I've tagged along quite a few times. I can always count on a good meal, fast service, and a good price! Only had breakfast food here but it's all been great!

This place is great! I use to live in lake view and loved salt and pepper. Needed a place to go to and finally found a great local joint. The food is decent and came to the table fast. The owner was standing by the cash register the whole time making sure biz ran smooth. His name is Jim. Say hi!

West River Cafe is the closest diner to my place so I've been there a few times for breakfast despite the fact that it is pretty lackluster overall. The prices are mid-range and the food is okay, for the most part. The hash browns are tasteless and rubbery, and asking for them extra crispy is usually ignored, or possibly the cook doesn't know how to do it. The service, though, is why I won't be returning. When I go to a diner, I like to have breakfast, read my paper, and drink coffee. This means I might not jump up and leave as soon as I've eaten my last bite of omelet (unless there's a line at the door - I'm not a monster). However, the older waitress with short hair (who I suspect might be one of the owners) is in the habit of dropping your check on the table after 2 coffee refills and then completely ignoring you in order to make you leave. Even when she is pouring coffee at the tables on either side of you, and you are flagging her down, cup in hand, she will straight up refuse to serve you. Again, if the place were busy, or if I'd been there over an hour or something, I'd understand her wanting me to leave. As it is, this is just super passive aggressive nonsense and I'm not going to reward it with more of my money. Any recommendations for other breakfast places near Montrose/Kimball/Kedzie?

A wonderful little diner with a traditional feel to it. Great for low key breakfast/lunch in the local area. Service was spot on...not too bothersome but not lacking. Food was the best part. A little pricy but well worth every penny. The Manager's special is highly recommended!!

Good chilaquiles, the waitress was a bit distracted being that she was waiting her friends but it's ok because the food good although we also had a gyro and it was like the saltiest thing ever bah but it was good lol fresh coffee nice little chill spot.

Small cozy diner. Staff was exceptionally friendly and very courteous. portions are big but the prices are very reasonable. Food was really good. Had the Montrose breakfast special. Delicious! Will definitely be returning to try some of the other breakfast items and lunch specials.

West River is a cute little Breakfast/Lunch corner diner. I had a Steak skillet and it was good. I was seated at the counter and service was good without being intrusive. I live very close so this is a good low key spot I can grab some good brunch and write.

2 words, Monte Cristo..It's probably the best I've had..The portions are huge and the quality is more than you'd expect from a diner. The wait staff is super nice and they're always nice to my kids..Can't ask for more..No gripes about this place at all..

Love this diner! They make the best french toast, nothing fancy, but the best good old-fashioned french toast. They also make nutella crepes, great skillets, and pancakes.

  • Rae W.

You can't go wrong with large portion size and reasonable pricing. What makes this a 5 star breakfast joint, in my opinion, is the customer service and true diner experience. No frills, just consistent coffee refills and fluffy short stacks. Me and FeFe will be back!

Breakfast special $4.99! This is a great little neighborhood breakfast/lunch place. Ask for their wonderful multi-grain bread. It is cozy, clean, the food is great, prices are good, and service is fast. Most entrees are about $9 but they do have that amazing special. Love it! Sundays of course are very busy.

This is a fantastic small family neighborhood diner!! The staff are friendly, attentive and quick. We like to have a quick brunch here and there's seldom a long wait. Food always arrives very quickly and made to order. Classic breakfast favorites are accompanied by some Latin and Greek options for greater variety. Love the gyro omlette, the feta cheese is delicious!! Prices are very reasonable as well. Definitely a place to check out and support in the neighborhood.

I've been hear a few more times than I have actually checked in. I have to say the food is good diner food. When I think of diner I automatically think breakfast, but I've tried other menu items and it's just those breakfast sausage links that are horrible to me. Nice staff, fast service. Closed by 3pm but good to stop in if you're up early wanting good food.

Had to check out this place before I moved out of the hood. The food was pretty good. Oddly enough I decided to order an oatmeal and I really enjoyed it. I was a little wary ordering from a dinner, but I wanted to eat light. Definitely decorated in a country decor against the backdrop of the bustle of Kedzie and with a diner feel. The wait staff was friendly enough. We got a wobbly table and the busboy went out of his way to stick stuff under the foot of the table to keep it from rocking back and forth. Worth a stop if you happen to be getting out from church or walking the 'hood.

Sweat pants on! Hair a mess! Cross the street with dumb look on face! I did it all for West River Cafe! Everything here is perfection personified for diner fare. Portions on your plate will usually not be finished because there's so much for you to take home across the street to your hobbit hole! Grumble grumble go the voices in your head. Eat the rest of your Gyro skillet ya ding dong! I'm so happy to come here though and the staff are friendly and know the meaning of re-fill! Oi. Now to lose some weight!

I just moved to the neighborhood a few days ago, and I've already eaten twice at West River Cafe. It's the ideal diner. They serve breakfast all day, and the food and coffee are aces! I had the avocado skillet with bacon and coffee the first time. The skillet was very tasty and the portion was substantial. My boyfriend had the breakfast tacos with chorizo. We kept stealing bites of each other's food--SO GOOD! The next day, I was still unpacking and didn't want to make food, so I got a bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich and a coffee to go. The sandwich was also excellent. I'm so happy to have such a rock-solid diner just around the corner from me. It's right up there with Cozy Corner in terms of diner awesomeness.

I think yelpers get this one wrong. No one thing was worth four stars let alone the whole experience. The coffee was water and the waitress was indifferent. Won't be returning.

Good food, clean, reasonably priced. This is a decent diner through and through. However, what kicks it up a few notches in my estimation? FOUR KINDS OF OATMEAL. Well, okay, four different ways oatmeal is served. I love oatmeal. I order it for brunch whenever I can, and usually it's just a big heaping bowl with some brown sugar, milk, and maybe a few dessicated raisins. Not so at West River. I got myself a heaping bowl with strawberries, blue berries, and granola. I also got some eggs and bacon, both of which were tasty. I'm definitely hitting this place up again.

I've been coming here for years. My office is in the vicinity. I've always enjoyed the eggs benedict and daily specials. The other day I discovered their home made potato soup. I couldn't believe my taste buds... just exquisite. Yesterday we picked up 2 bowls of mushroom soup. We took it back to the office and were delighted with the wonderful home made soup, and delighted to find french bread in the bag. Together a wonderful lunch. Thanks West River cafe.

Neighborhood diner - win. Diner that's a straight up diner and not an international festival of foods - win. As Johnny T has said before me - strung out looking locals - win. All of this means that I can roll out of bed with a mild hangover, not worry about having to look like anything other than exactly that and just eat. While that wasn't me today, I did enjoy the breakfast. The french toast wasn't very traditional but it had an interesting and pleasant citrus-y scent. The staff is very friendly, the dining room is clean and my coffee was always topped off. I sat by the window, read the paper, enjoyed my breakfast and drank my many cups of coffee for under $10.

I am always a fan of a place that serves breakfast all day. They have so many choices, it's ridiculous! I had the gypsy skillet, and my boyfriend had the biscuits and gravy. Both dishes were delicious! The portion size is out of this world. My skillet was huge and it was under 5 dollars. My boyfriend had the option to do a full or half plate. He went with the full plate and got 6 biscuits. Again, his dish was about 5 or 6 bucks. It's a small place, and it's not very crowded. We didn't have trouble finding a seat. It's kinda like an old school diner. The service was great, and our waitress was very nice. The atmosphere is very relaxed, and I didn't feel rushed. I would def go there again! It was awesome.

I'm glad this diner is in my neighborhood. I typically come here for their breakfast. The food is good and not expensive at all. My parents love going here when they visit me. The staff is always friendly. Good recommends: Avocado Benedict(my fav), when offered their 4.99 bone in ham is solid. Pancakes and French toast are also tasty.

I've gone here a couple of times because it is close to our house. The friendly service really goes away when they are busy. The first time we went,I had an enjoyable experience, nothing earth shattering, but acceptable. The second time we came here, it was busy. All the tables were full, but someone finished and we barely waited. I felt rushed the whole time and had to flag down our waitress a couple of times for water and utensils. She seemed annoyed and flustered. Usually, i don't really care about service if the food is good. however, since the food is just okay. I had a meat skillet both times i've come here and it was good, but... again nothing out of this world, or even this neighborhood. would i recommend eating here? not if you don't live in a 1 mile radius. don't come for sunday brunch either, they get "busy".

West River Cafe was our third choice and after my experience there today, I don't feel so bad saying that. We walked in and was greeted my no one for about 3 minutes. Finally one of the busy servers nodded to us, asked us how many in our party and then mumbled while pointing to a table that was being cleaned for us. We sit down and another server comes to our table with water and silverware. He does not bring menus and he does not greet us. Finally, we asked a third server for menus and she promptly brings them. The entire time we are barely getting through the greeting process there is another gentleman behind the cash register. He seems to be an owner or a manager, and he is not participating in the chaos that is brunch service, in any other way but quickly taking people's money when they are leaving or leaning against the wall that divides the small, bustling kitchen and the tiny chaotic dining room. We order our food from server number one. She is apologetic for our wait and seems a bit disheveled as I have watched her multitask through the dining room as her manager watches calmly behind the register. Not doing anything to assist her or any of the servers during this busy time. Our food comes out within a matter of about 10 minutes and was good I guess, but I was just happy to be eating at this point because I was starving. The server brings our check more than half way through our brunch. We quickly finish eating and prepare to leave. Now that I am about to pay my bill, the manager is now sitting in the back of the restaurant, drinking soda and checking his cell phone. I wait for him to return (as you can imagine he was in no hurry). As he is taking my payment he never asks how my meal was and he doesn't thank me for coming In. Needless to say i will not be back. Having worked in the service industry, you learn to "follow the bubble". Help seat, help bring menus, drinks, condiments and take payment. As a manager, you are ALWAYS suppose to assist your staff. I was disgusted with my experience. If it wasn't for the okay food and my bustling server who did the best she could in the weeds, I would give this place one star because it was easy to find. Good luck.

It's a diner but I am high maintenance. I like for my diners to hop on one foot and call me 'Cutey.' Not really. Well, sometimes. The point is, I can accept diners for what they are and I don't expect more. If you put out there that you _can_ do more, however, I'm'a expect you to man up. WRC, sorta, boyed up. I came and sat in a booth (point). The veteran waitress smiled and gave me grapefruit juice (point). The locals looked strung out (point). I was prepared to get my usual (pancakes and eggs) when I noticed a sparkling delicacy: gyro omelet. "Hmm," I thought, "an omelet with lamb, onions, tomatoes and wickywicky sauce? That sounds delicious! I must try it!!" Well, what I received was a large omelet with brown meat sticking out of every side. "Not everything can be pretty (looks lovingly into a mirror). Taste it what's important. I can't wait to savor those veggies and slickyricky sauce. Mmm." No. It was a large, dry omelet with brown meat sticking out of every side. I don't know what made this a gyro omelet. Maybe the grill cook's name is gyro. I'm confused. I learned a lesson: don't try to be cute and order something 'exotic' at an old-school diner. The WRC should have learned a lesson as well, however: don't offer something if you're not willing to commit to it. Unless, the order item was a joke. In that case, bravo, brava.

A most acceptable diner in Albany Park! Very old-school, but with enough spiffing to keep it off the "dive" list. Waitresses that refer to one as "hun" and "sugar," and keep the hot coffee a comin'. Big ol' plates of potatoes, eggs and various breakfast meats...perhaps a short stack here and there, and big huge fountain sodas with precisely the right carbonation. Ahhhhhhhhh, fizzy. If you like a good diner meal, West River Cafe is sure to please. Gyro skillet was somewhat ridiculous in its proportions...and tasty in its execution. Huge pile of hashbrowns topped with gyro meat, tomatoes and feta....mmmm, scarf. Brekkie all day, every day. Just the way it should be! At the corner of Kedzie and Montrose, parking (meters) is quite easy. Friendly staff, good coffee, hot breakfasts. Bill for 5: $62, and we ate like diner kings!

this is our favorite place for weekend breakfast/brunch! Menu is consistent with typical diners but there always has specials that often inspired by Latin American cuisine. The service is super fast and very friendly. We never had any problems with food or service.

    (5)
  • Custom M.

I have been to handful of diners, but this one hits home. Service is great, food is fresh, but the only thing they lack is consistency. The place gets packed on the weekends so service and wait time are a little longer than if go during the weekday. If you go there Sunday morning, make sure you go before the Church down the block lets out. If not, yer gonna be waiting. Overall, I can't complain, the staff is friendly, the food is great for what you pay and the ambiance is very comfy. I'll pick this place over iHop, Dennys, or Golden Nugget any day. Breakfast rules here, lunch isn't bad. They always have daily specials for breakfast and lunch. All I have to say is MONTROSE SPECIAL!!!

Not at all what I expected at the corner of Montrose and Kedzie- less grimy lunch counter and more suburban family restaurant. Overall a nice little place. After grabbing a table and we had water and silverware almost immediately. I like that. We each ordered a special from the chalkboard and a full biscuits and gravy to split. The food was fresh, portions large and my Greek Skillet was packed with gyro meat and little feta blocks. Now I like to think of myself as a bit of a biscuit and gravy connoisseur and West River has very good biscuits and gravy. My favorite in the city are still a few blocks east, but these are not bad at all. Thick, not too salty and filled with sausage chunks. Good stuff. The coffee was good, the service was fast and the place seemed clean. Winner.

Ordered the $5 chicken sandwich and fries for lunch one weekday. The piece of chicken was bigger than the rest of the bun...and that's the way I like it. :) Fries were good. Friendly service. I went back the next week and had the gyro skillet...it was so good! :)

Came here once, will not be back again. Which is a shame, as I'd love a diner just a few blocks from our house. The food is..well..meh. Which to me is a crime - a diner that can't make good breakfast food? Cramped and divey. Hilltop on California & Foster is better & worth the walk.

  • Lauren H.

I was searching for a place to have lunch with a friend, and when I asked her about West River, she said it was a couple of blocks from her condo yet she didn't know it existed. Well then, I insisted we try it. I liked it from the minute I set foot in it, it had a diner-ish feel to it. I ordered the manager's special: 2 eggs, 2 sausage links, hash browns, and 2 of the lightest, yummiest pancakes I have ever tasted. My friend had a skillet and enjoyed it too. Prices reasonable, service quick. My only complaint is that I thought the hash browns weren't browned enough, but easily remedied, I will simply ask them next time to make them crispier. And there will indeed be a next time!

My family and I have gone here over the past several years. We used to like it more, but the prices have gradually gone up and are just too high for the quality of the food. Service is fine and the decor is fun (mostly chicken-themed). Sometimes the music is turned up a bit high.

Great neighborhood spot with fast and friendly wait staff, 80s rock on the radio and tasty and filling skillets. Pretty much the only sit down breakfast spot in Albany Park. I wish they'd add a location further west (hint, hint!).

My husband and I have been coming to this establishment every Sunday since we moved to the Albany Park neighborhood 5 years ago. Which is about the time the establishment first opened it doors. Obviously, we like the food. The 2 waitresses and owners, one of which are always on premise and very polite. They will also help you make a discussion if you can't decide between two dishes. Their breakfast/lunch menu is extensive: Breakfast: I would recommend a skillet or one of their daily specials write on the wipe board by the door. Lunch: The gyro platter is delicious and comes loaded with fries. The Greek Chicken is yummy but you need to ask if they have it sometimes it not ready or they have sold out. It's a roasted chicken with a Greek blend of spices. And if you're in the mood for a huge, loaded salad go for the Cobb salad. Loaded with chicken, bacon, avocado and served in a bowl as big as your head. If you eat it all....congratulations. Over the years we have seen this Cafe popularity grow substantial and of course with that comes the line of people. Yes, this establishment is small about 7-8 booths and 6 tables. If you go during the week there will be no wait however like most Chicagoans we like our Sunday breakfast/brunch so yes there will be a little wait. Typical wait time now is about 10-15 minutes. There is no hostess, however someone a waitress or owner will ask you if you want a table or booth and then give you an est. wait time. You can take in the quint atmosphere by the door until your seating is ready. If you decide to stop by go early (before 10am) or after 1pm on a Sunday your wait time will be very minimal or non- existence as we have discovered over the years. While writing this post will only cause more people to flood one of my favorite Chicago cafes, I cannot let this establishment go unrecognized for their great service and food we have received over the last five years.

"You're an asshole" from Tony A. That is one of several "compliments" I have gotten for my previous review of this restaurant from this individual. His 5 star review is below. He's clearly the owner or employee. Since my previous review complained about the service I got here, these e-mails only reinforce my initial impression of this place. By all means, visit the West River Cafe and you too can be called an asshole. Better yet, skip it altogether!

This is our ultimate Sunday brunch spot. This diner is filled with character and wonderful, super nice people that work there. The experience here is very personable and the food is super delicious. I always order the florentine Benedict. Also the Alaskan Waffles are delicious and are served with ice cream - yum!

My husband and I go here everyone in awhile because it is cheap, close and cute. And of course yummy. Especially the corn flake french toast which I have never heard of anywhere else.

This is a delicious hidden gem in Albany Park on the corner of Montrose and Kedzie. It is so diner-y, with its wood paneled walls and rooster decor. It only serves breakfast and lunch (and breakfast all day, I do believe). And breakfast there is so good. This place is always full of locals. I'm kind of protective of this place. I want it to do well but I don't want all of Chicago traipsing into my hood to experience the deliciousness. The staff is friendly and pleasant, the food is so darn good. My favorite is the sausage gravy and biscuits. The portion is plentiful - six biscuits!! - the biscuits are home made and a decent meal here won't set you back very much at all.

This review is long overdue! My roommate and I have been going to this diner almost every Sunday afternoon since I've moved to Albany Park a year and a half ago. I really like the small town feel to this place. Living in the city, it's quite difficult to break away from the hustle & bustle of everything so this is a great place to come sit down & enjoy a cup of coffee and a stellar breakfast. (Get the California Omelette. It is FANTASTIC) Service is great. Everybody is really friendly and welcoming. It is certainly always one of the highlights of my weekend! I'm always stoked to go out & party on a Saturday night but I must say, I always look forward to my Sunday afternoons a little bit more!

What a sigh of relief after leaving the rude service at Kuma's. We walked in, and had a server in less than three minutes, our food was ordered an served in under 10. I had the breakfast burrito, which for $7 was enormous. Girlfriend had the poached egg sandwich which she said was very good as well. Prompt coffee and water refills by a friendly and nice waitress made this place quite enjoyable. While it was an older, smaller establishment, it wasn't dirty and seemed to be run very well. I'd definately go back and definately recommend for a nice relaxing breakfast/brunch.

What a great find! The atmosphere is more like a diner than cafe, but they serve some solid breakfast food. Your grandparents would love this place. They were really nice about all the substitutions we requested. If you're hungry, I recommend the gyros skillet. They roast their gyros off a spit and it rivals most gyros places. It comes with eggs, hashbrowns, and pancakes/toast. I peeked over at the other tables and the eggs benedict and french toast looked really good. We were stuffed and left with leftovers for $23,

Service amazing the plates are a nice size and food is the best. I love to take my family and they always have two high chits when I go it hard to dine with twins but they make it easy. If you live in Albany park must go.

Trying to patronize more businesses in "the hood" (and by "the hood", I mean "my hood", as opposed to The Hood), we decided to check this place out for a little late-afternoon Sunday brunch. I found the interior to be, well, f'ing adorable. Obviously not a hand has touched it in 30 years, and yet it looks almost new. The little green bar stools made me giddy for a hot minute. Adam had the juevos rancheros, which swiftly disappeared. I had the chicken ceasar pita with fries and some chicken and rice soup. The chicken ceasar pita had great flavor, but was really difficult to eat. Once I did manage to shove some in my face--rather gracelessly--I discovered gristly bits in my chicken. That effectively ended my consumption of said pita. The fries were good, and the soup was tasty (though there was evidence that it came from a can). Very clean, very prompt service. Total check, with tip, $22. I'd go back. I just wouldn't get the chicken!

The trend now of days, for diners, is to look super fancy, appeal to "yuppies", so you can have a spot in Time Out Chicago, and have a line of tourist out the door. Not to say that the people at West River Cafe wouldn't mind a line out the door, but the place comes off as real as the food they serve, and by that, I mean real good. It has your traditional diner look, and feel, with service that is quick and friendly. I haven't pointed out a favorite off of their menu yet, but that's mostly because every new dishes that I've tried, I loved.

When I moved into this neighborhood 5 years ago, it was somewhat diner-less. I prayed and prayed for a nice little breakfast joint to open up near by. Well, my prayers were answered cause this little gem open it's door a month later :D Service: Fantastic. I love the waitresses there. They ALWAYS greet me with a smile and the owners are really nice people as well. I had to move out of my neighborhood for about a year (long story) but when I moved back, and strolled through their doors for breakfast, they all looked up and said, "THERE she is! Where have you been?" Food: Good. I'm not blown away by the food, but it's good. The chicken dishes always seems dry, but the eggs, BLT's, or Gyros never disappoint. If you're in the area for breakfast, I recommend this place! Update (3/13/2014): This place has really gone downhill. The food seems like everything is frozen, nothing fresh. I had an egg dish with cottage cheese and it was the grossest cottage cheese I've ever seen....like it had expired...it was WAY to thick to be considered cottage cheese. They also let the decor go to crap. The booths kinda slant now and it looks really run down. Finally, on a weird note, I was having breakfast one day and the owner served me coffee and asked, "Where have you been?". I said I was doing more cooking at home these days. He smiled and said something like (this is not verbatim), "Well if you don't come back I'll go out of business." I thought that was soooo weird to say to a customer! Guilt trip me into coming back? I don't think so! I mean, I think he was just joking around, and it wasn't meant to be taken personally, but it was weird. I try to avoid that place at all costs now.

Decent eggs benedict, good hollandaise, my sons eggs were cold and I had to ask them warm them up, my wife eggs and bacon and they were good, but just not that spectacular. Nice small environment, you get your money's worth.

Cute cheerful place - I'd go so far as to say a step up from regular diner food. They give huge portions, I don't think I've ever finished all the food on my plate, and breakfast is my favorite meal. They oven-bake their omelets, which is healthy, but sometimes I'm just in the mood for a nice buttery greasy one - you won't get that here. Oh, and they have TONS of benedict's - my favorite is the avocado, I swear, they put a whole avocado on it - yummy goodness (I usually ask for less hollandaise sauce, it's not the best, but not terrible either). Because it's in my neighborhood, and walking distance, we come here a few times a month. Not sure it's worth a special drive out, but the lack of breakfast places around me is sad, so it's nice to have this one in the 'hood.

My husband took me here for breakfast. Honestly I'm a bit of a "greasy spoon" snob so based on the neighborhood and outside appearance I never would have tried it. I'm glad I did. I liked it! I ordered pancakes and some bacon. Pancakes were fluffy and large - but they really need to warm up the syrup for you, cold syrup just doesn't taste good. Bacon was good, nice and crisp. My husband ordered a skillet - I think it was the Montrose Skillet - Wow! Huge plate of food arrives! He didn't even finish it all. Looked really yummy so I stole a bite and it was delicious. I didn't know this before we went but apparently he's a regular w/ the guys from work so the owner and waitresses chatted him up a bit. :) I would go again because it's neighborhood-y feeling (if that's a word), not too pricey (our bill was just about $20) and the food was pretty good.

This is the mom and pop breakfast spot my wife and I have been looking for since we've moved up north. The service and decor takes me back to my childhood days. The food is just right and very reasonably priced. Will definitely go again and will update the review on my next visit.

Thank you yelp for helping me find a good brunch place! I had some kind of skillet, and my bf had the french toast. They give you a ton of food for the right price. The service was great, my coffee cup was constantly refilled. The menu had a good mix of breakfast and lunch foods which was perfect for my bf who doesn't really like breakfast foods. The atmosphere is nice, small, people coming and going in a way that it is busy on a Saturday morning, but not much of a wait.

I found this place on Yelp today 'cause I was craving an omelette. I saw that the reviews were good so I decided to check it out.... it's great! it's fast, it's local, it's delicious! the ladies working there were very friendly. we got our food to go but still got great service. I had the Sante Fe Omelette-- it was great! My boyfriend had the Mushroom and Swiss burger and it was amazing! Of Course, I ate some. ;) We're new to the neighborhood and we definitely will be going back. The food was great and it was a great value! We spent $15 for two people! We brought home a menu so that we can plan our next couple meals there so that we can try everything! Ha! :)

Rooster Heaven! We went here for the first time today, and finally have a breakfast place we can call our own. We have been in Albany Park for 7 years but never found a good breakfast place (not a fan of Tre Kroner, too pricer, too much of a wait) and used to head over to Svea's in Andersonville, but this morn read the Yelp reviews and decided to try West River Cafe. Loved our breakfast (simple and quantity - the Montrose special is fabulous and with the French Toast, shareable.) the waitress was personable, helpful and very nice. Kept our coffe cups filled, and it was good coffee. Fairly confident we will become regulars. The lunch menu looks interesting, when we try, will advise!

Some of my favorite memories growing up in the South Suburbs are of heading out to one of the region's countless Greek family restaurants with my dad. West River Cafe is exactly like those places of my youth, bringing the Greek family diner experience to Albany Park. (And of course, I believe one of the owners is from Palos - the West Africa of the Greek restaurateur from which all Chicago diner owners must hail). I know, I know. Four stars for a diner? If I was just rating the food among all restaurants, we would probably be talking three stars. But in the "diner category," I think West River ranks right up there. Most days, I tend to get the skillets. They are huge things, well prepared, with the eggs always coming out how I ordered them (no small thing when the place is packed every weekend). Pancakes are also consistently good and the breakfast special is usually worth checking out as well. As you'd expect in a diner, breakfast is served all day. Lunch is offered as well and the sandwiches are fine, mostly what you'd expect, but fine. One exception is the West River chicken sandwich, grilled chicken, peppers and cheese served in a pita that is quite good. But probably stick to the breakfast side of the menu. The service at West River Cafe sets them apart. It is friendly, fast and they know how to treat regulars (servers knew my name by the third time I went there). Plus, the restaurant is exceptionally clean for a diner and the many windows make it feel very warm and open. If you crave diner food and find yourself in Albany Park, I can't recommend a better one.

Just a neighborhood diner, that's all. It's what you'd expect. I would not say they are very "service" oriented.

Waking up the morning after Obamapalooza at Grant Park, I was hungover (we managed to sneak in whiskey), exhilarated, exhausted, and not in the mood to take any public transportation to get some grub. Used Yelp to find "breakfast" in the area, and realized I lived blocks away from the West River Cafe. My friend and I were promptly seated, served, and stuffed. I got biscuits and gravy (though pancakes are in my future) and he got the breakfast burrito. I couldn't finish my full portion, but it was good. Maury was playing on mute on the t.v., everyone was extremely laid back, and a family came in and were greeted as regulars which made me smile. I like a sense of familial relations in a diner. It was a good morning after, and I plan to come back again rather than hiking to the Irving Park G-Nug.

When you go to the West River, you have to expect a dive-y little diner. And that's what you get. But NOT filthy or gross. This is a sunny little place with a homey atmosphere & good service. My BF and I LOVE West River for our little local breakfast nook on a Saturday morning. Everything is good (so far as we've tasted!). Sausages are not your Jimmy Dean freezer variety links--they're yummy. Their scrambled eggs are light & fluffy & delicious (and they'll put some cheese on top, if you want). They have whole grain pancakes that make me so happy, I feel like a little kid who was just told that Christmas will be EVERY day. This is home cookin'. It will fill your 'hungry hole', and be a warm, lovely experience. (Did I mention even with it's size, it's still good for people-watching??) Go there.

The food is great and the service is wonderful! I recommend this place to eat. One draw back, it's more of a restaurant / diner than a "cafe."

  • Theresa M.

I'm soo bummed! They changed the sausages and their rye bread, to mimic the "cookie cutter" breakfast establishments, I loved to avoid since finding this place!! Where they used to have LARGE delicious sausages that would seriously be a main draw when talking about this place, in it's place are these skinny pathetic looking links. They also changed the brand of Rye Bread they serve up. It used to be nice thick almost bakery type bread, and now it's these thin little "nothings" they call rye bread. Portions are getting smaller too. Less potatoes, less eggs and puny sausages and toast. I don't know what to say. It's lost the appeal for me. I can walk to the corner at Golden Nugget and get the same breakfasts now. Sorry West River....you had me sold, but now you've lost your individualness and joined every other breakfast establishment. Ohh, and the service is getting slower and slower. I think they need more cooks back there on the weekends...we waited almost 40 minutes for our 4 simple dishes to be cooked and served....and when they came my french toast was raw with it's insides mushy with egg batter...YUCK! By the time they made a new one, I had it wrapped to go.. I wasn't going to wait longer!! For all those reading this review that have only experienced the new sausage and all the new changes....you don't know what you had missed!!! Sure it's still decent and good...but now, it's nothing special like it used to be.

Starve yourself the night before, just so you can come in the morning and order one of their great breakfast skillet! Seriously, I found this place through yelp when I returned from holiday, and was pleasantly surprised to find such a great spot for breakfast food that wasn't IHOP, and quite affordable. The service was fast and friendly, the food was delicious (I ordered the corned beef hash skillet with rye toast), and the crowds were not so great (we had no wait). I just might make it my Saturday breakfast time home.

  • Steve G.

It's a diner! I just moved to the area and don't know of another decent diner nearby, so I was pleased to find West River Cafe. I've had one breakfast here that consisted of the traditional solid diner dish: omelets, toast, OJ, oats, cereal, coffee, friendly service, etc. It's what you expect from a traditional diner. Definitely not a "destination" for those who don't live nearby (e.g. Overeasy in Ravenswood/Lincoln Square, or M. Henry in Andersonville), but a great standby for those who do.

  • Iris H.

Coffee is important to me. A diner can have the bestest foodage, but if the coffee is off, I won't be back. That said, I enjoyed my food and coffee at WRC. It's clean, the waitresses are attentive w/out being in your face, the ingredients appear to be fresh, and the clientele are from all walks of life. I've tried the Reuben, tastes several diffident omelettes and sampled a veggie soup. All good. This is a mom and pop establishment that I hope sticks around for a while. Go here and eat well.

Great joint in the neighborhood. Large portions & great specials like Oreo pancakes & blue cheese frittatas. Would have given them 5 star but they need to turn the music down!

  • Alice S.

The coffee here is pretty good (my benchmark for breakfast places). Food here is pretty standard, nothing out of this world, but solid and filling. Service is a little bit scatterbrained but not offensively so; during a not very busy period it took a while to get our menus, but after that it was smooth sailing. My guy had that omelette with big chunks of breakfast links sticking out of it, and while it looks comical he said it was tasty! Everything I've ever had there has been prepared well, and is never overly greasy. Good place for when you're not feeling adventurous or in the mood to wait for breaky.

I love a good breakfast at a local diner. Dont expect anything fancy but good American food and good service at West River aka the Rooster cafe. My favorite is the montrose special -eggs, bacon, more bacon, hash browns, and french toast. Great big portions too. Get there early as there not open for dinner.

Great diner! My boyfriend and I love this place and always head there on a weekend morning. The pancakes are fluffy and the crispy French toast is awesome. The service is super friendly. The prices are average diner prices, definitely a place where you get a good bang for your buck. Definitely try one of the skillets, but come hungry!

is it really a skillet if it comes on a plate? the food was decent but undersalted. my greek skillet did have 3 eggs though, and for that they get bonus points. plus, for a crowded sunday morning the service was super prompt and friendly. why is this neighborhood so severely lacking in diners. not just good diners, ANY diners!?

I used to live two blocks from this place and I miss it!! It's the perfect locale for a hungover carb fest! The breakfasts are huge and cheap! I always used to get the 3 eggs, hash browns and toast for $3.75!! Where else can you get that deal?? The owners are friendly and the place has a family feel. The chicken rice soup is fab too! They are only open until 4 so those late risers might miss out. This place really is great! I'm happy to see that they are getting busier these days as for a while there it seemed like The West River might not make it!

In my quest to visit every Diner within walking distance from my apartment I finally got around to visiting West River. It's pretty much your typical all American diner and the first time I visited there was only one other person eating. The diner closes at 5 so it mostly a breakfest/brunch place but they do have some entrees. The specials are were its at and I had the fried chicken with rice. I expected a typical fried chicken meal but what I got was a very large breaded chicken breast. The breast was cooked to perfection tho, the breading wasn't burned or crispy and the breast was moist inside and Delicious and for the reasonable price of eight bucks I thought it was a great deal. On the second visit I had an break fest quesadilla with eggs and bacon and that was very tasty and very filling. The service was great and our bill was cheap. I will definitely come back to try out their other specials.

Went here for breakfast on a weekday morning. The food was incredible, and the portions were huge. I had a gyro skillet and my wife had one of the benedicts, and we were both very pleased. The service was pleasant and efficient, and our waitress kept the coffee cups full. Enjoyed the atmosphere as well. Fun place.

This is a great place. The food isn't five star quality, as it's nothing mind-blowing, but they do a good job with the typical breakfast diner standards. I do enjoy the atmosphere (very "local"), good service and the location (2 blocks from mi casa!). They do have a small healthy section on the menu if you're not one for greasy breakfasts, which I personally appreciate. :o) And I suppose that overall the breakfasts aren't that greasy compared to, say, Golden Angel and the like. But it's tasty, and holy hell it's cheap! We're going to be regular patrons for sure.

Had a GREAT breakfast here early this morning. I was craving Biscuits & Gravy and read someone elses review of this place. I ordered the eggs, sausage, hashbrowns and toast breakfast with a side order of biscuits and gravy. The side order came with FOUR biscuits covered in a very creamy sausage gravy loaded with pieces of sausage. I couldn't finish my breakfast and was happy to pay the $10 check. This place will go into my weekend breakfast rotation.

Been here about 3 times so far. I've tried the West River omelet which is made with egg whites, spinach and mushrooms. It comes with OJ. (my favorite dish so far) The baked chicken is surprisingly good and the portions are really a good value. The coffee is better than average and the service is good for a diner. This place can get pretty busy and isn't very big, so plan to avoid peak breakfast time hours (9am to 11am on weekends). I don't think they have a parking lot. There's meter parking on the street. Mangia!

We like going to West River Cafe for breakfast. They have a lot of selections and it is a good place for families. The service is good and the restaurant is clean. I agree with some of the other reviews, this place is nothing to write home about but it is consistent good food at a good value. Try the homemade pound cake that is up by the register! Good stuff.

I can't say I got my socks knocked off, I mean, I had really good scrambled eggs, my son liked his pancakes, blah blah. However, the staff couldn't have been more friendly and helpful and the place is SPOTLESS. Very rare for a diner. I've heard the biscuits and gravy are awesome and the omlets too, but I don't eat meat and I have yet to finish an omlet so I didn't try them. If you live nearby it's worth a walk or a short drive.

This is a great breakfast, brunch, lunch diner spot. Over the past year and a half its been picking up quite a significant amount of business. I think their omelettes are simply fantastic, nice big chunks of sausage cut up into it. Their vegetables, and fruit taste pretty fresh and something must be said for their biscuits and gravy (which I don't normally like). Their eggs florentine dish is superb and is quite a helping if you ask me. Sometimes I do feel like the service is a little slow, even when their not particularly busy, but I wouldn't call it poor because they do get to you it seems just before it gets annoying. It will get really busy on a saturday or sunday morning/early afternoon, so play your odds correctly. For a good spot to hit up in Albany Park during that breakfast to lunch time frame this place is defintily worthy.

Not the most awesome diner around, but a solid place to get breakfast. Staff is friendly and service is excellent. Would have gotten another star if my corned beef hash arrived well done, as I asked.

I work not too far from this location, so my co-workers and I were eyeing this place before it even opened. We ordered a few breakfast/lunch items from there and were kind of disappointed, the eggs tasted like eggs, the potatoes tasted like bacon and the bacon was dry. I think they might have changed cooks but even w/the recent change the food isn't anything special. They serve typical diner food, turkey clubs, burgers, gyros, soup, breakfast specials etc. but the price is decent but food is bland. I have tasted their breakfast & lunch menu and nothing pops out. I feel as though I could do better cooking at home then eating at this location. I have been to numerous diners and this is one that is on the bottom of my list because there isn't anything special about this place in my opinion. Since I work nearby I just order from here if there isn't anything else to eat but otherwise I wouldn't recommend this diner.

If you live in the neighborhood, don't have car and don't have time to take public transportation somewhere else then this is an OK choice for you. I would describe it simply as basic, uninspired diner food. I never understand why people refuse to go the extra mile from average to above average. This place certainly does not. Make sure you have plenty of water when eating the pork chops (or are sitting with someone that knows CPR). I am giving it a 2 because there's nothing wrong with this place, it just isn't very good. The prices are good, the staff friendly and the place is clean.

I happen to work in the area....this is THE BEST place...the food is ALWAYS so good, even better than homemade. The owners are SO nice and friendly, they always remember you and make you feel at home, especially if you are alone, they don't let you eat alone if you don't want to.....HIGHLY recommend...its worth it

I miss this place. I used to live in this neighborhood and eat here ALL THE TIME. The servers and the owners were always so friendly. The servers knew my name and my order. They would let me take up a whole booth to myself, sit for hours reading or whatever, and never cut me off from coffee refills. This is a great place.
