Italian Cuisine
The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.
Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.
If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.

I've been coming here for decades and either get a beef, hot dog or breaded steak. Today I had the double cheeseburger.......OMG absolutely delicious for less than $5! I can't believe I never had one before!!! Another favorite to add!!

Simply put the best Italian Beef sandwich in Chicago. Get the beef or Combo. Family run for decades

Speaking of a hole-in-the-wall place, Tony's Italian beef definitely is qualified for such description. The space of the entire dining is smaller than my living room! But the patrons didn't seem to mind and enjoyed their meals regardless. Other the typical "Chicago-hotdog-joint" varieties, they offer lots of menu items that you can see in an old-fashioned American or Greek diner. In other words, there is something for almost everyone, unless you're a strict vegan (then the Chicago-style diet isn't going to work out for you). I had the Italian beef sandwich with mozarella, and hubby ordered the pepper & egg sandwich. I did like the beef very much. It was one of the renderest beef I've ever had. The entire sandwich had just the right amount of saturation; it was easy to consume. My minor complaint I had was the amount of mozarella in the beef sandwich. It was on a skimpy side. I barely detected the presence of the cheese until I got to my last bites. Hubby's pepper & egg sandwich, on the other hand, didn't have much wow-factor, according to his words. Perhaps he needs to order a different item next time to have his mind changed. Overall, it was a good experience to try out Tony's on the southside of Chicago. It's located in a gentrified neighborhood, yet during the day I don't foresee any danger to explore by foot. If you prefer to drive your own vehicle, there's limited parking behind the restaurant.

Yummy food. We've had it all here. The egg breakfast sandwiches are cooked to ordered If you want ur bacon crispy u will get it crispy. So good! The beefs here are good as well juicy and cheesy. The fries here are so good! They have a red-ish seasoning on them. The workers are nice. My brother loves the burger they smell delicious! 5 stars!

They make good sandwiches at Tony's. Most previous reviews were all about the Beef and I like those here just fine. They have the Jr Beef for $3 and that is usually enough for me. Or I've been known to get 2 Jr Beef with giardinara and a Coke. Good sandwich for the price. What people are missing clearly is the rest of the menu. Go in and get a Super Sub with 3 eggs, 2 pieces of Bacon, 2 sausage patties, 2 slices of ham, and American cheese and tell me you don't like it. I like the eggs cooked over medium so the yolk breaks and runs all over the place. That is a whole meal for about $7. Good place for breakfast, lunch or dinner. They also have a text club that they use to notify you of specials, and they hand out a card so when you get 10 punches on it you get a free sandwich.

I stopped in for dinner while staying at a nearby hotel. It's small, fast paced and strictly takeout. I went with the King Size Italian Breaded Steak sandwich. The Italian bread, which was good but not remarkable, was packed with thin beef cutlets soaked in tomato sauce along with a few green pepper strips. Wow. It was outstanding and quite filling. All for just under $10. I'll be back!
(4)Kat N.
Just spent about $9.00 on a beef fries and drink.... The pop was hot! Fries were cold and the beef was dry!!! I won't be back nor do I recommend anyone going here! Sucks! Waste of money!

I've been coming here since they opened. Everything on the menu is FANTASTIC!!! My favorite is the Corleone sandwich. I get mine dipped well & it really gives it that extra oomph. Can't go wrong here. There chili is really good too. The large tamale boat is great in chilly weather. I usually phone ahead bcuz the place is small & always packed. Prices are reasonable with what you are paying for. Highly recommend. Satisfaction guaranteed from breakfast throughout the day.
(5)Jason H.
The homemade Italian beef is awesome and the homemade hot peppers are even better. There breakfast is something to behold as well. Great place !!
(5)Sandy V.
This has to be the best beef on the south side we have been going here for 30 years my husband was a mailman and ate there for lunch a couple days a week . There beef is tender the bread is fresh just n everything is awesome Tony the owner n his uncle John are the best
(5)Tony R.
This place has great cooks who won't disappoint you on the freshness. There beef combos are one of the best in the southside of chicago. I will Most definitely be back to try there dogs and other things on the menu. They have the Jr beef and regular size Jr beef is a bang for your buck and so is the regular.

I'm just writing this review to make future clients aware of the quality of this place. I went to Tony's because it came up rated #1 on channel 11 WTTW. The Italian beef combo is literally disgusting. There is no other way to put it. I love Italian sandwiches and I will eat almost anything, I'm even open to International cuisine, but the plastic taste that these subs have is unbearable, I had to throw mine away after the first bite. They taste like plastic. I could not discern if it was the sandwich or the peppers I put on it, but something tasted very wrong. Oh, and the pop has absolutely no gas in it. WTTW, shame on you! How much did this establishment pay you to rate them so high! Want a good Italian, cut the crap and go to Portillo's. Order it dipped and with hot peppers. Put some black pepper and a little bit of salt and cut the bullshit with all these other half ass establishments that get listed and rated so highly.

Great beef sandwiches. As well as breaded steak sandwiches. Great burgers and dogs. Fries and onion rings. My secret weapon is the Sicilian steak sandwich. A must try when in Chicago.
(5)Diana G.
Decided to drive out here for a late dinner. Been wanting to try this place for awhile. They do have a parking lot which is nice. Italian Beef with Red Sauce, Mozzarella and Giardinia on the side - My guy said it was good, but he wasn't too fond of the giardinia. He said it was different or it tasted like it was going bad. Breaded Steak - This was okay. Breaded steak was tender, but even though the bread was soft, part of it was cold. They also forgot my sweet peppers. Cheese Fries - Think they overdid it with the cheese as it was a bit salty. I will definitely come back and give it another try.

The Corleone is by far my best choice here and everything else they have is awesome try this place out!! But I highly recommend the Corleone sandwich!!!!
(5)Paul L.
Every now and then you will find that hole in the wall that turns out to be a real gem, this is one of those places. It is literally a hole in the wall, you can only fit about ten guys in here standing up but the food is great, I have never gotten anything here I didn't like and at reasionable prices. Service is good and staff are very courteous.
(5)Gonzalo F.
I love the food here, but was dissatisfied with my last visit. I ordered the beef meal with hot peppers did not get the peppers. I ordered diet rite they did not have any so I ordered water did not get a discount on the meal.My visit was on 1/10/15.
(2)Lupe G.
It's a staple out here on the south side. I personally don't care for the seasoning they use but people swear by the stuff! The place is fast & the people are always really sweet even when they're slammed with customers
(3)Kal B.
If you're going for the BEEF.....YES, Go here, BUT the add-ons are not all the there, ie.. Onion Rings, M-Rooms, Cheesesticks. It's all frozen and nothing to really talk about. The Beef is very good (4 Stars) The Appetizers (2 Stars) - Too greasy. I know it's fried, but it used to taste a lot better. They've also got a couple of Grilled Chicken Sandwiches that pack a nice kick of flavor if you're interested.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news all my Chicagoland beef fans, but this beef joint in the top 10 just does not meet the quality in my opinion and I will explain why below. This place is really hyped up as having a really good beef sandwhich. When you walk in the place it is tiny, and even has leaning shelves designed for a beef stand. There is a sign that says "the best Italian beef since 1975" or whatever year it said. Seeing all this set up one will automatically think they are in for a treat and give this place a higher review just because of the old beef stand ambience, and hey it is designed to be a perfect beef stand but the food does not add up. I was real excited when I opened my beef after I got it despite the fact my food critic brother was complaining his beef was not dipped well like he asked for and it was bland, I was praying he just got a bad one especially since he got cheese on his which often dries the meat out when being melted on the meat, well later he informed me the cheese was not melted on so that was not the case. I opened mine up and what I saw underneath the tin foil wrapping was a deli looking, almost Arby's looking Italian beef starring back at me with light colored, dry looking meat. I said in my mind "Oh dammit!!!" I bit into it and yes, it tasted exactly like it looked, bland, unseasoned and dry meat. Mine was more dipped in the gravy than my brother's but the gravy itself was even bland, and of course it would be if the meat is since they are put together eventually during the preparation process. The giardinera was weak as hell with a slight burn only, and we ordered our peppers hot, all three of us, and all three of us said the same thing, it was weak as hell and over vinegered. I was very disappointed indeed. I give three stars because I fell in love with the chili cheese fries I got. I was real skeptical at first when they served it in a styrophome cut, but it actually helped because it caused more cheese to be added all throughout. For the first time I had cheese fries that had more cheese than fries! Noice!! But I am sorry I am here for the beef not the ultra delicious chili cheese fries. This place is far below the quality of Johnny's beef in Elmwood Park, I was expecting this to be lesser but not deli line less quality. A beef sandwhich should have dark looking meat and dark looking gravy and you should be able to see specs of spices in there. This place had no specs or hardly any and the gravy was light in color. The over-vinegered giardinera was weak as hell, but great for someone with acid reflux disease, I guess. Oh well bummer, I will just stick with Johnnys and Buena Beef. And yes Buena beef has amazing beefs, c'mon just look at those spices in the meat and gravy!
(3)Kathryn C.
We're from Dallas and had been craving an Italian beef sandwich, they were the only place around open this late. The pricing wasn't bad and the sandwich was really good. Don't let the interior deter you. We also decided to grab a Gyro since we hadn't tried that before- also really good! Overall great place glad we stopped by. The owner was nice and made sure everything was good for us
(5)Stephen R.
This is the best beef of all time right here. Everything is homemade and they cook their beef and peppers on the grill. I recommend the Corleone. Nothing like this place. The BEST in Chicago! Take my word on that one. I've had all the big names such as Johnnies, Freddies on 31st, Al's, Portillos, Mr. Beef, along with countless others, and Tony's beats them all! That is saying something because in Chicago, Italian Beef is King.
(5)Mark L.
I had a beef, fries, drink. Good beef sandwich, very filling and tasty, take a pass on the sweet peppers though, they were tasteless and over cooked. But Im going back.
(4)Mildred P.
I drove a long way for 2 breaded steak sand which. And I go home empty handed! They ran out of bread! That sure is bad management
(1)Tiffany V.
If I had to describe this sandwich in one word. "Decadent." Okay I'll have to use two words. "Obscenely Decadent" It is a self-indulging, greasy, juicy, spicy, and .....just delicious. If you aren't from the area like me then you wouldn't really know what the hype about these Italian Beefs are. From a distance, they reminded me of a Philly Cheese steak. NOPE. I WAS WRONG. VERY WRONG. After eating a Chicago style Italian Beef, I will NEVER, EVER go back to eating a Philly Cheese Steak again. We were looking for some place to try Italian Beef Sub known to Chicago and stumbled upon Tony's. This was simply the absolute best beef steak sandwich we've ever tried. With the fat, buttery, chewy bread, giardiniera peppers, tender and juicy beef cuts drenched in broth, used it just made an amazing sandwich. Tony's is a hole in the wall but don't be fooled by it's appearance. These are the best. This Chicago-Style Italian Beef steak at Tony's and the Chicago-style deep dish are amongst the reason why I absolutely love this city.
(5)Frank T.
Holy mother of eight Pound, Six Ounce, Newborn Baby Jesus, in your golden, fleece diapers, with your curled-up, fat, balled-up little fists pawin' at the air.. This is the place to get your Italian Beef/Combo!!!!!!!!! It is so amazing! There are no words to describe it. If you think you have had the best Italian Beef ever before trying Tony's, you are wrong! If you think Al's Beef is the best, you are wrong! That place is a rip off compared to Tony's Beef. I wish I could buy stocks on this place. It's a gold mine.
(5)Andre H.
Good food and good service. Don't know how many Iitalian beefs i've consumed from here... And now i'm hooked on the bacon double cheeseburger....They also make this great breakfast sandwich.
(4)Jason N.
Another unassuming gem if you want a good sandwich. Have tried many and all have been good. The Corleone is a nice twist on the classic Chicago Eye-talian beef (yes everyone, many south siders say it just like this) The breaded steak is also quite tasty as well as the chicken chickalini (just think of a chicken parm sammich but with thin sliced chicken) But my personal favorite is the greek chicken sandwich. First they take french bread, add some chicken grilled to perfection, along with lettuce, tomato, feta, and onion. Then it's topped off with their own homemade greek sauce (which I always ask for extra, so I can dip my fries in them) This makes for a helluva meal! The service is always fast and friendly. Prices are reasonable, and no matter who you are chances are you'll find something you like. They also serve breakfast all day, which is a good thing to know. So if you're looking for a new sandwich joint to try out, check out Tony's. Your stomach and taste buds will be happy you did!

I remember the first time a friend invited me to this place back when I was a sophomore, 95 if my memory serves right. Next year it will be 20 years, God Darn! I always order the double cheeseburger w/grilled onions, no tomato, extra pickle. The beef is always soft and delicious. Every now and then when I have extra $ I get the Sicilian grilled steak sandwich. When I am running late in the morning to go to work I stop by & get the Super Sub Sandwich w/free coffee. John, Tony, and Tony are awesome people. You can tell they are living the American Dream
(5)Sarah M.
My Italian beef sandwich lasted two meals. Bargin! Very sparse on the peppers, though the mountain of beef more than made up for it. I wish my mother could cut beef this wafer thin. The thinness is important to me. Oh, and the bread was nice too. I also tried the chocolate shake. It was huge and really good. Ordering times were accurate.
(4)Timmy C.
My absolute favorite food in Chicago. I've been on a mission to find a better italian beef, but have come up short every time. I would always recommend getting it dipped with mozzarella. The breaded steak is also something to behold. It is enormous, and you should absolutely feel ashamed if you eat entire king size in one sitting. I may have moved out of the neighborhood 10 years ago, but I will always take the trip back for more delivious Tony's Beef.
(5)Cesar M.
A challenge between me and the sandwich. What to say about this place but good stuff. I have been here many times usually for lunch and everything is good. On my most recent visit I ordered for the first time the Italian beef/sausage combo with green peppers and cheese, and giardiniera on the side. I was expecting a medium size sandwich. Well, it is a humongous sandwich. I looked at the wrapped sandwich and thought that it must be the wrong order. Unwrapped it and I was wrong that was my sandwich. So I started working on it. First bite mostly bread, good sturdy bread which is good since you have a lot going on on that sandwich. next few bites; bread and some really good Italian beef and a hint of the green peppers and the hit of the giardiniera. Very good. Let me take this moment to tell you about the giardiniera. It is so good and fresh that it has got to be made on location. The hot peppers are still a little crunchy and so good. And then OMG I get to the Italian sausage: sweet and salty cooked to perfection with the peppers and the giardiniera it was really good. So I'm almost full and have damaged the sandwich a little more than half. At this point I'm happy I did not order fries or any other side. I take a couple more bites and now I'm positive I will not be able to conquer this thing. And just as I was about to give up I remembered a saying " God said: God and human, not god and food" :-) I'm happy to say that I won the challenge. TIB. Definitely good
(4)Christopher L.
1st let me tell you I consider myself an Italian beef sandwich junkie, and when my girlfriend suggested Tony's I said I would give a try. Let me say WOW, the beef sandwich jumped into 1 of the best I have ever had, and I have had them all over the city its definitely worth a try you will not be disappointed they have a great staff and a killer milkshake.
(5)Carlos A.
I'm a regular I've been comming to Tonys for about 5 years now and so far they haven't disappointed me. If ur looking for a delicious fast food this is the place.
(5)Engineer E.
This was voted top Italian Beef place by Chicago City Workers for a reason. Screw Al's Beef and throw any other beef you've ever had out the window. For the past 15 years, I've tried nearly every beef Chicago and this is THE best. Their menu is overwhelming but don't be afraid, the beef is why you go.
(5)Charisse L.
Been going to see Tony and John for the best beef, sausage and meatballs in town for over 30 yrs.!!! NO ONE HAS A BETTER SANDWICH. Their food is consistently good, don't hesitate to try anything new on the menu. Everything is fresh because it doesn't stay there very long, due to brisk sales.NEVER GREASY AND ALWAYS HOT AND TASTY!!!Tony Jr.and all staff are very friendly and get you out fast.Try the egg and pepper sandwiches during Lent. Theirs are the only ones I'll eat.The seasoning is to die for!
(5)John L.
Simply the best Italian beef in Chicago. If you flying into Midway and have some time to waste, get a beef at Tonys and a pork taco at Zaca's a block away!
(5)Rob J.
MMMMMMM!!!!! Italian Beefs are very good the only other place that is better is Johnnies Beef over in Elmwood Park. Fries are tasty and seasoned but the Chili Cheese Fries are better. Hands down the best breaded steak around. Overall great eats.
(5)Jay P.
This review is for one thing only and that's the beef. Tony's beef is the best beef joint in Chicago in my opinion It has changed very very little from when I first came here as a kid . Everything is right on this sandwich the bread the juice and the beef are all in concert on this one putting this beef well above the original Al's or even Johnny's beef which is a very good beef as well.
(5)Barbe Q.
this place has been around forever, and is still a stop for me when I'm around there, it's always been good. neighborhood is kinda seedy though, now.
(4)John C.
This is a good place for a Italian Beef, nice and juicy. I now have a southside and northside spot for a italian beef sandwich. Cheese fries are good, the fries itself are seasoned well, in fact you may have to ask them to go easy on the seasoning. The interior is counters and high/bar style chairs, so it's better for to go orders.
(4)Jay K.
Now when I have to go to Midway I have to fight with myself where to go... Vito and Nick's for an excellent thin pizza or Tony's for an excellent beef. can't go wrong at Tony's, the beefs and combo's are great. I always get a combo dipped with giardina...so good. Excellent bread, sausage, beef, gravy. Don't know about the rest of the menu cause I have to get beef and sausage when I go there. Not worth a trip from the north side since Johnny's located a new place in Arlington Heights but a must stop if your in the neighborhood and have to have a excellent beef!
(5)Andrea B.
Best beef in Chicago. Great service and a huge menu! I will be back!
(5)Marc R.
If you are going to Midway and need some food go here! Amazing huge sandwiches. Also open for breakfast! I had the Italian beef with cheese and hot peppers! Giant, amazing, and yummy. No need for fries. They do a red sauce dip which people swear by. You can get one and share it. They don't skimp down here! This place rocks. Real Chicago place. There is no dine in really. Just some chairs and a counter-top. Lots of people were getting to-go orders.
(4)Bashar E.
Had the Italian beef sandwich (duh) which was huge. Ahh I love chi town.
(4)Paul T.
My good friend took me here when I was visiting Chicago back in 2005. I didn't have any expectations, since we were just trying to get some dinner before heading out to the bars. Wow, I was so surprised. I got the spicy italian beef sandwich. The thinly sliced beef was piled high along w/ melting cheese and a soft/chewy bun. The beef was seasoned just right and was spicy just the way I like it. The grease/juice from the beef soaks into the bun, giving the bun much added flavor. Along w/ the chewy texture of the bun, the sandwich is everything you'd imagine it to be. Can't wait to go back to Chi town to have it again.
(4)Tina B.
For straight up Italian beefs, this is probably one of the best in the city. The beef gravy (au jus) is rich and flavorful (if Starbucks started serving cups of this stuff it would sell like crazy - I'd take a venti...often), the beef is moist and not grizzly, the bread is chewy and delicious. Just a great sandwich. The place is small, like a closet of greasy sandwiches, with only a couple of bar stool type seats. Decor is the menus, all over all of the walls, just option after option of cardiac distress causers. Their homemade giardiniera has some unusual additions to the usual peppers, celery and carrots - like beans and a bunch of other veggies - which makes the oil fantastic, but misses a bit on texture. Fried mushrooms are noteworthy, fries are decent and well seasoned. Misses are the Italian sausage - too dense and chewy for my tastes, and the "Corleone" - a grilled Italian beef with grilled onions and the giardiniera - grilling does not do this type of meat justice, leaving it tough and difficult to eat - stick to eating it after it has soaked in the gravy for about a million years or so. Even though it's not next to the Loop or the northside, it must be mentioned whenever the topic of "best beefs" comes up.
(4)Michael W.
The "I" talian beef is really good. It's a lot better than the sausage. I'm sure that's the priority here...hence the name of this Southwest Side hole in the wall in the flight plane of Midway. It's not Tony's Italian Sausage. Yet, what is beef without sausage? That's like Laverne without Shirley. Surely that's not the way God intended me to eat beef, all nekked, alone and linkless. Who would want that? So minus one star for that imperfection. But then again, perfection is overrated and I'm hungry.
(4)Damian P.
Good, delicious sandwiches .....
(5)Jason R.
Tony's Italian Beef has man's best made sandwich in its name for a reason, but not a five-star reason. In one of the largest, most-value-for-the-cost slice of hard bread, Tony's heaps on a generous portion of beef on your sandwich and doesn't pre-weigh the meat, like you'll find in most places that care more about a dime than they do a genuinely satisfied customer. I went in there with a semi-complicated order for two sandwiches. After all, we had two picky beef sandwich fans who wanted it their way. The order was perfect. As I sat down and unwrapped the footlong sandwich, I noticed that the natural juices of the sandwich had made my once dry sandiwch a wee bit soggy. I wasn't too picky that day. I wanted to bite into this neighborhood staple. A part of me, which is reflected in that gray star up above this review, was disappointed. I knew Tony's had a hearty type of "beef stew" taste to its meat so I expected that. What I was disappointed in was their less-than-generous helping of giardiniera peppers. My ideal sandwich has one of the world's greatest condiments hidden among the mounds of beef. This sandwich had a big serving, a slight beef stew-like taste and a small helping of giardiniera. Overall, it was a better-than-good sandwich, but my quest to find the best continues.
(4)Erik s.
f*ck the knock off cheese steaks chicago tries to pass off. if you want some sloppy greasy meaty goodness get an Italian beef. This stuff is just plain delicous and make sure they dip the sandwich this will ensure that your artery is fully clogged and you will reach tastebud bliss. their chicago dog is shite though and fries average
(4)Yo U.
A very good breaded Italian beef is on offer here. Tony's is worth a look if you're in the area.
