Amazing and flavorful Thai cooking, diverse menu, one of the best I've tasted in Chicago seriously. The owners are great people, and I think this place subconsciously finalized our decision to buy property down the street.

I have been wanting to try this place forever. I have gone by quite a few times and they are always closed. They certainly do have strange hours. I read somewhere (maybe on Yelp?) that the owner wants to have more of a personal life now so he opens for limited hours plus closes for a few months out of the year. I totally respect that but it sure does make for difficulty in trying this place. Anyway, the important thing is I finally made it there. I absolutely loved my entree. I am usually quite predictable, always ordering veggie spring rolls and veggie pad thai with tofu. Not this time. I decided to go outside of my comfort zone so I orderd a fried tofu appetizer, which was good but not great. I might get it again but am not dying to. Now my entree....that is another story. I ordered this dish of noodles and broccoli in a peanut sauce. It usually comes with your choice of meat but being a vegetarian I asked for tofu instead and they happily obliged. OH MY GOD! This entree was delicious. The noodles were the large flat kind and definitely homemade. The broccoli was steamed to crispy perfection. The peanut sauce, I think I had a dream about it last night.....damn those limited hours. I want to go back for lunch and they are not open!! I will definitely go back to Thai Aree.

YUM!! The food is so delicious! My sister and I decided to stop in on a whim after driving around looking for appealing restaurants. From the outside, it's nothing special and pretty easy to miss, but it's worth a trip over here. The owners are so nice and friendly that it feels like you're eating at their house. When my sister's chopstick went flying, someone was there with a clean one before she could even pick up the one on the floor. Everything we ordered was perfect. We'll definitely be going back again soon.

I love this place. Maybe not the best Thai place in the entire city, but a fast, yummy, friendly place for take out or dine in. Be careful when you ask for "very hot" it will be.

Our family has been going to Thai Aree for over 10 years and the food is always superb. There is no finer thai food in the entire city. If you are on the northside, Thai Aree is a must!

OK so once a cheater, always a cheater I guess...I am so sorry that I cheated on you Siam Taste Noodle! I cheated on you with your neighbor, you know - the one around the corner? I did it twice this week...it wasent enough the first time I went, I had to go back for more. I am so NOT sorry though. The first time, I had the beef salad as suggested by Bryan R's review and wow - it was great. My friend had the Red Curry Tofu w/Green Beans and it was amazing. It was super hot but I couldn't stop eating bites of the tofu. My lips grew twice their size because of the hotness alone! *Wow* The next night I went back for more, only this time I got the Pad Thai beef and it was so so spicy that it was hard to eat - although even though my nose was running and my mouth was on fire I continued because I am a dirty dirty cheater. I also had the fresh spring rolls and they were great as well, I would have them again and again. So although my first love around the corner is delish as well, this new found lover will be my new obsession...and Thai Aree I will try my best not to eventually two time you as well....xox

Most of what we have had there is good. Tom Yum Seafood is what most people rave about.

I went there with a friend in 2004 and fell in love with the place and food. I have beeon going back there since with other firends and family and everyone has loved it. The service is outstanding and so is the food. They make you feel comfortable, make sure you have everything you need and are willing to make food to your taste! I will not stop going there especially now that I live around the corner.

They have the best Tom Yum soup in Chicago.

Very friendly place with great Thai food! We moved to Chicago from Michigan a year ago and were pretty disappointed with the quality of Thai food we've had here so far. This place has good food, but be aware of the spicy levels! We were warned before ordering even medium spice level, but went for it anyway. One of our dishes was very spicy.

This spot rules. Fantastic food, great service, and BYO. Loved the green curry and basil chicken.

I stopped in here for like two seconds to order their Panag curry togo. Super friendly owner, fast service, more than reasonably priced. Final Verdict: The Panag curry was delicious and a must order!

The owner is super duper nice here! I love that he really wants you to have a good experience. He is attentive and kind and is there to help you with anything regarding the menu or your food. My friend was late to dinner so I was sitting there by my lonesome for a while. I guess he felt bad for me sitting by myself, so he brought out some complimentary tea! Seriously, such a nice guy... As much as I like the service here...Why can't I find a Thai place with good Tom Yum soup? This place is on the sweet side...I wonder if I can ask to add more lemongrass and spice to fit my taste buds? I don't know...

It is hard for me to eat Thai these days, with a little one at home with a peanut allergy. As such, I often try to get a Thai Fix while on travel. I stopped at Thai Aree with a coworker and his family. The service was exceptional, the food was better. We started with a Thai Pancake/shrimp appetizer - tasty, awesome. We moved on to Pad Thai (great example), a basil beef (served with fried eggs. . ), a Papaya salad, and a green curry. All of these items were excellent examples of Thai food. Dishes were slightly spicy (but spiced to taste) and were served with plenty of rice. The meal ended with a palate cleansing watermelon. . .i'm not sure how Thai Aree can acquire such flavorful watermelon in october - but they did. the next time i'm in Chicago, I will be back

If your looking for Thai food, then look no further. Best food! Sarah the waitress is awesome and always remembers our order. Go with any suggestion Sarah makes. Also don't forget to bring your favorite beer or wine!

I very seldom write a review but I feel this place def deserves it. I'm a tough critic and possibly a little boojie when it comes to food. I've tried dozens of thai spots all over the city and this has to be the freshest, absolute best thai food in all of Chicago. I ordered the noodle kee mow with chicken and my friend ordered the shrimp pad thai. We shared both dishes and both were amazing. I must say when you ask for spicy, expect to sweat. Aside from the amazing food, the owner is so incredibly kind. After I paid for my take out he says hold on one second and slices me up some delicious watermelon to go. The food won me over but that was just icing on the cake. Been looking for a great thai spot for over a year and I think I finally found it.

  • Matthew D.

Owners are super super nice - nice enough to warn me that even though I love love love hot food... BEWARE ordering it HOT! Whooo Weeee... That's some spicy Thai Food! Green Curry was awesome and Pad Thai was really good. Can't comment on anything else as it was a simple pickup for the Mrs. and me, but it might become my goto spot. Take a look at the photos of the menu here as it's nowhere online. But this is a sweet little spot run by good folks that will go out of their way to please you.

FAVORITE SPOT FOR PAD THAI and love that you can choose your spiciness from level 1-10. Great food and friendly staff.

I've lived right by them for years and this the first I've tried this place. The owners are sweet hearts for one. The food is really good. I ordered their fried rice basil but spicy and it is really good. It is different from most places. I also got the appetizer shrimp rolls with their home made sweet and sour sauces which is good as well. I have yet to try more from their menu. Recommend place.

I really enjoy this restaurant a lot. My husband and I go here when we want Thai food. Its not to far from our house so we go here a lot. We have been bringing everyone that we know to the restaurant. The waitress here is fabulous and if you don't know what to order she will direct you to the right entree. She is just a great waitress. We really enjoy her. The food here is also delicious and always the right amount. Most of the time we always have leftovers. Its a great surprise to eat it again the next day.

Second Helping. Carry-Out this time. Arrived just past 4 Friday, again I am alone. ?? This Thai Rocks! Am I the only one who knows it? He poured me water offered me the paper to read, whilst my meal was in the works. He kept consulting me to get the correct heat for each dish. When the bill came it was totaled out so I left a few dollars on the table. This guy deserves a tip the least. The Tom Yum was just that YUM. The heat perfect, if I lived here in the winter I would buy a 55 gallon barrel of this for the house. Panang was authentic and not Jiff on rice. Again even carried out, the Pad Thai was spot on! Best Thai since Pucket last year, and oh so much closer. Another on foot adventure for awesome food, I figure it took me twice as long to find than was needed. A unassuming building and decore, small and Saturday night at 7 I was it the third patron.? Super friendly staff took my BYOB to keep it cold. Tom Yum Seafood was 10$, dining alone thought I could take leftovers home. It came in a hot pot and was HUGE. The broth was a 10! Perfect medium hot, it was cathartic. The ingredients with a few shortcoming like the addition of surimi, jalapeño, and Italian basil The med/hot Pad Thai chicken was plenty hot but best light and flavorful! Pad Thai should be more like a salad than a pasta. You should taste but not see the sauce. Perfect!

My tastes buds run contrary to the majority of reviewers I guess, let me explain: I have had this place bookmarked for weeks bc it's right by my house and great ratings = perfection. This is the second time I've had their food. The first experience wasn't anything to write home about but I'm all about second chances. Alas, this was not worthy of a second chance. My review is based solely on the food bc the service is not lacking anything. I ordered the plain pad thai and hubby had the beef basil fried rice. Both sounded great but his meat was very, very dry and my noodles stuck together in an awkward way, they had to much peanut mixture and just wasn't very yummy. I had about 5 bites before I decided it just wasn't worth finishing. I love thai food and Chicago has some amazing options but unfortunately this won't be my "spot".

  • Aly P.

Really great Thai food and very friendly staff! I like that they give you a 1-5 scale of spice level everytime you order and it's usually pretty accurate :) 4 stars because it's very expensive for the portions they give.

  • Rick F.

Ed and Ann the owners are the best, they really care about every detail of your meal. Best service ever! They remind me of my own parents who are passionate about food and family. Love it! Food of course was excellent, Chicken soup flavored perfectly. Basil Fried Rice was wow heaven in every bite. Garlic Chicken, they crisped the garlic perfectly. Pad See Ewe I don't know how she does it but damn was that good, Jasmine tea watermelon and cherries for dessert no charge. Fantastic experience.

We love Thai Aree house. Their owner is always friendly and the food is some of the best Thai we've ever had. Either dining in or taking out we find ourselves always commenting on the wonderful flavors this place sends our way. A few must try items are the Shrimp in a Blanket with their homemade dipping sauce. The Beef Lard Nar with their house pickled peppers mixed in and the Pork Pad see yoo(spelling may be off on that one). When looking for a new place you should always wonder, "how's the food?" and, "well, what about the service?". Here the answer has always been- fantastic.

This place has amazing wonderful delicious knock your socks off good food! The owner is so sweet and is very attentive and the sauces he provided were homemade. Definitely recommend if you're looking food good food!

Love this place! We had been looking all around the city and suburbs and finally found a great place. We get takeout a lot from this place because the restaurant is kind of a hole in the wall, but definitely eat in your first or second time - the owner is amazing at recommending and coaching your order to be fabulous. He recommends sauces to mix and what to add to dishes. The shrimp in a blanket are the most delicious appetizer, with their lard nar and pad see ew being some of the best I've had. I think the pad thai is actually a little bland here, so we avoid that, but everything else we've had is delicious.

  • Aaron K.

Usually do pick-up from here but have also dined in. Food is consistently very good and always ready when they say it will be. All the typical Thai favorites are done well (Panang and Pad Ka Prow are my usuals). The owner is EXTREMELY friendly and dine in service was good. Definitely a gem in the area.

  • Justin B.

Eat here weekly. The food is great (some of the better Thai carry out in the city). Owners are great. Only thing that drives me crazy is when they take their long vacations!

    (5)
  • Kevin B.

Customer service is excellent, place is small but very clean. Who knew this little gem existed! If your in the area try it, you'll love it. Food is cooked by an older thai couple, one of the best!

Lovely staff and fresh dishes. The ingredients are authentic and fresh. I loved the willingness to recommend and suggest things to us, in an effort to give us the chef's favorites. Sightly long wait, but worth a return.

  • Justine W.

Pad See-we with tofu, it is always a safe dish to order when you walk into a new thai restaurant. The wide noodles absorbed the sweet sauce perfectly with the right amount of broccoli and tofu. However, I wish the tofu is more favorable. Maybe if you order beef, chicken, or duck would be better not bad ..The service was great.

  • Roxanne P.

Absolutely delicious authentic Thai food. The owner was very friendly. Excellent, superb service. I orderd the kamg green curry with chicken & my bf had the karee curry with pork. Fantastic! The owner brought us watermelon at the end of the spicy deliciousness of dinner. Would definitely recommend & come back!

What lovely people and amazing food!!!! I can't wait to go back. Seafood was fresh. Noodle dish was perfect. And my soup was amazing. I think this might be one of those places you can't go wrong with the menu. Close your eyes , choose , and for sure it will be delicious !! Omg.... I can't believe I almost forgot the best pat.... No MSG !!!

The panang curry was delicious. I'm glad I got mild because it still had a kick. The pad Thai was delicious as well and very fresh. The carry out was quick and freshly prepared. We will be coming back to try more dishes!

Stopped in for a quick dinner on a whim. First thing I love about this place is that it's definitely a neighborhood joint. During the course of dinner, it was clear that the majority of diners were regulars on a first name basis with the owner. As for the food, it was excellent. We tried the tom yum soup and a duck pad see ew, and would order both again. This place is BYOB, another plus. If you're in the area its definitely worth checking out.

I had the worst Thai-Aree-A after I ate here. NO....just kidding. But I did come here with a couple of friends for dinner one when there were just a few other patrons in the place. Our very enthusiastic host was helpful, but he was also just so hyper I didn't feel all that relaxed or comfortable. I really at this point don't recall what we ordered. We had one chap who doesn't do spicy and that was a challenge I remember. As I recall, the menu was pretty standard or template Thai, and nothing we had was particularly memorable. BYOB was good. But, living in a neighborhood with forty Thai restaurant choices, I doubt I would make the special trip back out here. After one shot, I don't get the appeal. But "each to his own."

I love this place! By far the best Thai food I have had in Chicago, Service while picking up is superb, they really appreciate the business. I usually get the Steamed Wonton which are delicious along with an order of egg roles, which I believe are the best in the city, and think you would agree, along with #62 - The Pad Woon Sen which is a made up of Chicken, Pea Pods, Shrimp, egg, mushrooms in a vermicelli stir Fry. Yesterday, we are also added Fried Rice to the order which we are now fans of too. If you are looking for the Best of "XXXX" in Chicago, I recommend Thai Aree House. I do not think they delivery, but do accept Credit Cards on orders above $15. They are not open for lunch unfortunately.

  • Carolyn M.

I went here for the first time, and it totally lived up to the Yelp reviews. The food and service were fantastic! I live nearby, and have tried to go several times, but they have been closed. There was a sign that they would be gone 9/11 through 10/20 (I think), so perhaps they take extended vacations. We got spring rolls, green curry and panang curry (I think-my friend ordered it). Both dishes were great. The waiter (or owner?) asked how spicy we wanted it, and they accurately captured our requests (even for one dish that we requested mild-medium spicy). The service was excellent. The waiter (owner?) seemed to bend over backwards to make sure that we were happy. He made recommendations about the sauces on the table, asked us whether we wanted additional plates, did we want chopsticks, how many glasses for our BYOB, etc. He even clarified whether egg was OK in one of the dishes we ordered vegetarian. Seriously great and prompt service. The atmosphere is nothing special--comparable to other authentic Thai restaurants (Thai Thai, for example). It's not fancy, but the fancy ones don't usually have great food. :) I wish they had a website. Hopefully someone who does websites will convince this owner to barter some meals in exchange for doing its website, if only to get the menu, delivery info, etc. on it. Love this place, and glad I finally got to try it!

  • Maggie H.

Amazing food. Ordered a curry dish and rice noodles dish. Flavor balance was just right. Dishes were not oily as most Asian dishes can be when the cook is not skilled. Family owned establishment. The family is very friendly and personalized the dishes to our ingredient preferences (I.e. Included only Chinese broccoli instead of American broccoli). I would highly recommend.

Thai Aree is where you want to be for Thai food! Holy Moly it's my favorite place and the owners are the sweetest people ever. The pad thai is on point, and I don't have words for the Tom Yum soup- it's delicious! Be warned- the spice level of this place is intense- the mild/medium dishes are hot enough for me, and definitely considered hot at other thai joints. I haven't eaten in here, only pick up, but the atmosphere seems super homey and comfortable. Will be back often to explore the menu. Yum!

Amazing service! Food is always fresh and made to perfection! Best noodles and red curry around.

This place is amazing. The service superb. You get your moneys worth with the size portions you given. The peanut noodles sauce is the best I've tasted along with its som tum! :) I hope they never run out of business.

How adorable is the owner of this place? I saw some write-ups on Yelp and wanted some Thai food that was above average, so we ventured on over. We were one of two tables to start in the place that were occupied, but we do eat at typically senior citizen hours, so that was not a problem. The owner came over and made some recommendations and was really helpful in determining the right spice level and telling us what to add to the sauce. We got some fried wontons and shrimp in a blanket to start. I mixed the chili sauce on the table with the house sweet and sour as instructed and loved the result. The shrimp was perfectly cooked and there were a ton of both for the price! I then ordered the crab fried rice and husband got the Praree (?) curry with beef. He is a total cissy when it comes to spice, so I ended-up trading him (I knew it was a possibility, so I talked him out of getting chicken) I loved the curry - very reminiscent of Japanese curry to me, with a sweeter kick (from the coconut milk). And, you get a tureen of rice - there is enough there for 4 people! The crab fried rice had a mix of fake and real crab meat - fine with me - but it also had a little too much cartilage/shell for my liking, hence the one star off. I would totally come back here and explore the huge menu more! Be aware that the new hours are 4-9 pm only now.

5 stars not fair for this restaurant, wish I can rate it a 100 star :D,loved it,very cozy, feels like eating home with very tasty food, everything was wonderful n the owner is a nice uncle as well. Very recommended. Have to take tom yum sea food, for two to share it n try one or two of their fishes

This is the best Thai restaurant that I've eaten at so far in Chicago. I grew up in Lake View and my family used to order from Bangkok Star. They had the best red and green curry soups along with many other excellent dishes. When they closed, we tried many Thai restaurants but all fell short (just plain not as good or inconsistent). Thai Aree House is great for a couple of reasons: excellent food, consistently good, extremely nice owners, the water melon at the end of the meal and the great service. The location is a bit out of the way and a lot of their business is pickup so there always seems to be a table to sit at. The prices are really great too. Delivery can be tricky -- it's best to pickup or eat in.

  • Patrick L.

The owner certainly takes pride in the food they serve. He even showed us the fresh herbs they were growing outside that they put in the Tom Yum soup (which was delicious, by the way). Green curry was good, but was made even more amazing when the owner showed us how to mix the curry/pepper mix that's provided on the table's condiments with some soy sauce to draw out all of its flavors. I was surprised! They're only open for dinner, so mind the hours. Owner was very friendly and welcoming. Definitely would return here. TL;DR - Yummy Thai food; friendly service.

As a die-hard Thai cuisine fan, I have eaten at Thai restaurants all over Chicagoland area but by far Thai Aree House is among the best. The food is always fresh and balanced in flavor, and the service is fairly fast. I don't recommend going there at lunch time, or Friday nights though - these are they busy time so you might have to wait for a seat, or service. A must if you are a Thai cuisine fan....

The food was fantastic, the staff was extremely friendly and helpful. It's a small, cute little place. The waiter even brought us some watermelon slices and hot tea to go! He was very accommodating to one of us being vegan. We will definitely be back!

5 STARS!!!!! Going off of the previous comments on YELP we dined in last night. It was a great experience. Nice and intimate. The food was AMAZING!! I had the Pad Sea-Ewe w/squid, medium spice but it wasn't hot enough. The owner was paying close attention from afar and brought me hot peppers to spice it up a little more. Man they were perfect!! The sexy man that was with me...oh yeah my BF! Got the Peanut Sauce Noodles w/Chicken and thick noodles, medium spice. He didn't like the noodles they were too thick lol but the flavor was to die for! TOTAL DINNER FOR 2: $21.26 The service is great and the food is even better! This is our new favorite neighborhood spot. Dine in or carry out...we will be back!! OH AND BYOB!!

We went here and got takeout last night. We both had different curries and both enjoyed the taste very much. $21.84 including tax for both chicken curries, takeout. Neither of us can handle spicy food- we are total lightweights when it comes to heat. I got green curry, mild, and it was a little spicy but I didn't finish it and used a bunch of rice so it was good. I'll finish it today. My husband got medium Panang Curry. He loved the flavor but will get mild next time. Both my husband and I went in to pick up the food, to check the place out. We had read the reviews and we disagree with people slamming the inner appearance of the place. Comments like "no decor" I really don't understand. It's obvious to me the place is decorated inside and the guy was soooo super nice I just can't see judging their design taste. If you want to feel like your on the Gold Coast or have very set expectation about design then don't come. For me it has its own decor and is clean and cute inside.

Quiet little BYOB place with some of the best Thai around. The Thai Sausage appetizer was phenomenal. When they say spicy, they're not kidding around :) so somewhere between medium and spicy will be the way to go for us. We drive from the burbs for good Thai and this filled the bll.

  • Justin C.

My wife and I decided to stop by Thai Aree after reading all the good reviews. In our opinion, nothing beats great service, and that's what we received from the moment we got there until we walked out the door. In between, we enjoyed some very good food as well. We tried the Papaya Salad, Pork Satay, Pad Thai Shrimp and Massaman Beef. Everything we had was excellent. The Pad Thai was the best we've had in Chicago, as it had a very authentic taste. Overall, it was a great experience, and we will happily return someday.

New update. This place is now my favorite thai restaurant. I tried ordering to go once, and he sat me down and gave me tea and something to read and felt bad that it was going to take some time to cook. haha. I understood. They had orders going out the door! The food was excellent even after taking it home.

BEST SERVICE IN CHICAGO!!! The food is outstanding, but what makes this place extra special is the AMAZING hospitality. The owner is very very nice and can accommodate any request you may have.

The kang green curry here is the real thing. Awesome flavor. For green curry this place and Yum Thai are the 2 best I've found. Also had excellent Kee Mao. The shrimp they use in their entrees are delicious & huge. They use plenty of spice. All around, everything is just done right.

  • Donna P.

The service is excellent- at least on the to-go order I placed with Sarah. She helped me pick out dishes and both were great. I got Panang Curry and Beef with Broccoli in Oyster sauce (me and my bf's standards). Both were good portion sizes, the broccoli in the beef dish was cooked perfect- crispy! I would have liked some broccoli in the curry, it was only sauce/ seasoning/ tofu, so I put some of the ample broccoli in my bowl. We also got pork egg rolls- not too greasy and very tasty. I wish they had an online menu, they gave me a paper one so I can order in the future but I can never find those things when I am looking for them. Overall, tasty. I am cheap so I will probably just make food at home and order take out on occasion, but worth trying.

We had the fried mushroom wontons, the Pad See-Ew and the crab fried rice. It was fantastic and the waiter (owner?) was super nice and attentive. He gave us a chopped Thai spicy pepper and some watermelon after our meal! The place doesn't look impressive from the outside but don't let that fool you.

  • Lin W.

Charming small authentic Thai. Very attentive service. Sampled Yom tum soup, mee krob, lad na and ground chicken with basil and rice. Fresh basic versions of these dishes and as spicy as you might ike them. Flavors are not complex and perhaps a bit rough compared with higher end Thai places but they are authentically based and have not taken on that overly sweetened taste of much American Thai food. Liquor store nearby for beer. If you prefer wine probably best to shop elsewhere.

  • C W.

I'm surprised to say this might be the best restaurant in the neighborhood. Fresh ingredients with distinct flavors, as opposed to the "gloppy" stuff I've come to expect from run of the mill Asian places. The dining room is charming and homey.

I wish I had my receipt, cuz I ordered just about everything. No crab rangoon, boo. Spring rolls, shrimp and veggie tempura, soup, pad thai and pad see ew. Sorry if these are all spelled wrong. I think I also ordered something else too. I tend to go overboard with take out simply because its fun. I didn't like the sauces they gave us for the spring rolls. I loved the tempura. Everything else was just ok. The soup was better the next day. I believe this is auth Thai food and it seems to be quality. It may throw some american thai food eaters off a bit but you'll enjoy the different flavors of the traditional dishes.

YUMMM My husband and I decided to check this place out because it's close to our house and we are always looking for good Thai places. We were VERY satisfied! When you walk in, it doesn't look like it will be as good as it is. Very clean, but you can just tell it has been there for a while. It's definitely a mom and pop shop. The menu is very large. It was hard to decide on what we wanted. My husband was very impressed because he asked for his dish spicy and the owner said, ok- medium will make you sweat. He was right. It did! He even gave my husband a small dish of dangerously hot looking peppers in case it wasn't hot enough. He also brought over some sauces from the back to "add more flavor" to our dish if we wanted it. LOTS OF RICE! They certainly don't skimp on the rice here. You get a very large bowl to share. We usually always eat all of our rice, but we couldn't finish it here. And complimentary watermelon after we were done eating! (not sure if this is an every day thing- he might of just wanted to get rid of it) It was a pleasant surprise. I will definitely be back. There are about 15 more things i NEED to try! might be BYOY... not quite sure.

Everything is fresh and delicious. My family has been getting take out here since I was a kid. It's still as good as it was when I was little. I enjoy dining in. It's usually pretty empty (not sure why) and the owner is so sweet. They make the best pad thai I've ever had. The panang curry and masaman curry are also superb. Best peanut sauce ever. The basil khee mao and pad see eiw are amazing. The Thai iced tea is tasty, too. I never get tired of this place! If you love spicy food, I would recommend this place!

I tried Thai Aree based on the strength of other reviews and was not disappointed. The owner was so friendly, welcoming, and nice, and the restaurant was incredibly clean. If anyone wants to complain about the decor, they obviously haven't set foot in any other small Thai restaurants. The chicken Pad Thai has a great flavor and plenty of spice with the hot peppers the owner suggested adding. Also, the egg rolls and steamed wontons were spot on. Overall, a totally awesome dinner.

I had the Panang and it was delicious. The chicken was cooked just right and the curry was spicy enough to pull everything together but not send me into tears. Our waiter, who I assume was also the owner, was extremely friendly and talked and gave advice throughout our order. He checked on us regularly and timed my second beer perfectly. And then when we were leaving, he brought out what was left of my beer without me even having to ask for it (I had forgotten about it anyway). The only problem I had with the place, and this was only a slight problem, was the appearance. It's not that it was an ugly place, but it lacked a certain appeal. I had a craving for Thai and met someone for a date there but I would have preferred an environment slightly more classy. But if you're already in a relationship and/or just looking for some good Thai, I would highly recommend this place.

I tried Thai Aree House after my huaband and I have tried several other Thai restaurants. It exceeded all the reviews. The food was amazing!! The service excellent and the owner was so friendly and went out of his way for us. We will certainly be back and we will recommend Thai Aree to all of our friends as well as bring them here.

Really yummy, really freakin' spicy. I love hot and spicy but be careful here. If you ask for hot, they actually make it hot. Like you will hurt the next day hot. I've had their Tom Yum seafood soup, Yum Thai Aree seafood salad, various curry dishes and the pad thai. Loved everything except the pad thai. Very bland. I have noticed that the food flavors and spice levels do vary based on who is cooking in the kitchen that particular night. I might try the pad thai again. The Yum Thai Aree salad is really good. It sounded odd and I'm not sure why I ordered it but that is probably my favorite dish. The restaurant is not much to look at. I've only ordered take out and delivery. Workers are always friendly if not a bit frantic. This place is in regular rotation for take our nights.

Thai Aree is really a hidden gem. If you're looking for Asian fusion with the cuisine of six different countries crushed together and thousand-dollar fixtures on the wall, this is not the place for you. But if you want authentic, reasonably-priced and amazing Thai food with wonderful service, look no further. I ate here for the first time last week and my wife and a friend and I had one of the best Thai meals we've had in Chicago. Highly recommended.

Wow. Friendly, knowledgeable, fast service, great prices and diverse menu choices. We ordered the egg rolls to start, I had chicken curry rice which was just perfect. My friend had Pad Thai and asked for it spicy, the owner verified with him exactly how spicy he wanted it and brought some extra peppers on the side just in case. There were also four house-made sauces on the table that the owner explained in detail. The food came out quickly, and just as my buddy began to sweat from the spices, the owner brought complimentary slices of Watermelon to cool down with! On our way out, the owner handed me candy, gum, and a bundle of Jasmine flowers "for aromatic pleasure" which I couldn't resist sniffing the whole walk home. The decor leaves more to be desired, but the staff completely makes up for it!

BLAND. Didn't get the hot sauce on the side that I requested or anything else. Not even a menu. Won't be back, still on a mission for good Thai food.

I have this problem, which is that I grew up with Thai Aree, and all other Thai food gets compared to my "home" Thai place. And just like few matzol ball soups live up to my mom's maztol ball soups, few tom kha gai live up to Thai Aree's tom kha gai. The salads are the hidden treasure of this menu-- sweet, spicy, salty, all in one. I heart the Thai sausage also. The tom kha is some of the best you'll find. I order the green curry about every other time I'm here. The vegetables are always perfectly cooked in the curries! Apparently that's hard to do, since so many other places mess it up. It's not the best Thai food I've ever had in my life, but it is very good and very consistent, and the overall restaurant experience is laid back. The owner and occasional other servers all love talking about the ingredients, and about Thailand, so if you've been to Thailand or like Thai cooking, feel free to chat them up. If you're heading over around mid-July to mid-August be sure to call first. The family heads over to Thailand once a year and they close up shop for a couple of weeks.

Oh Man! what a GEM!! Take it from a Thai person, this place is the real deal, home style Thai cooking. I ordered Lad Na, the standard by which I used to judge a Thai place, Thai Aree did not disappointed one bit. The flavor of the lad nar is right on, do not have to added anything else except the chili, the chili, you know it's homemade. The friend ordered the Massamun curry, most other Thai place will butchered the curry and turn it into this thick yellow syrup looking curry, not here, I had a taste of this curry and my friend just start laughing at me because I F-ing enjoy it so much. It was just the way I remember it back in Thailand. I spoke with the owner, about how much I enjoy the food.I commented on how I like that the menu even have the Thai writing on it. The owner made a comment that it's an old menu, and that it doesn't have some of the new item that some customer asked for like crab rangoon! I told him, don't bother trying to be like every other Thai/Sushi place you find at any corner in the city. I told him to just keeping making these amazing homestyle thai food, because it's so hard to find it in the city!! Give this place a try!!

Terrific food and service, and accommodating as all get out. I suspect I was speaking with the owner when I placed my order for delivery, and that he delivered the food. A very energetic fellow! Delicious and spicy panang. A great experience all around. We'll definitely be ordering from there again.

Went here for the first time for dinner with my boyfriend after reading all the positive reviews. The place itself looks sketch from the outside, but has a very cozy feel indoors. I'd have to agree with others in praising the service, our waiter (who actually seemed more like the owner) was very attentive. The beef pad see-ew tasted super fresh and delicious. After dinner, we got complimentary watermelon slices. Nice touch. Only reason I give this place 4 stars is because I wasn't impressed with their spring rolls. I've definitely had better. Will be returning with some booze. Love me a good BYOB restaurant!

Wow this place was great! But wow was it also spicy! This is one of those restaurants that are very authentic, and therefore their spice levels are authentic to the way Thai people eat it. I normally eat what I feel is pretty spicy food, but the Yum Thai Aree salad (a seafood salad with tomatoes and lettuce) that I ordered "medium" was incredibly spicy. Not at first, but Thai food has that kind of heat that builds slowly and in 5 minutes you're downing rice and water to try to level the heat. Next time I will realize that I am a Thai spice weaksauce and order mild :p. On to the dishes: Thai spring rolls - pretty good, reminded me of Taiwanese spring rolls my family (and most Taiwanese families) eat at New Years Yum Thai Aree Salad - SO GOOD! Green Curry with bamboo, eggplant and chicken - Very very good :d The coconut milk they add makes it so fragrant.... mmmmm.... Basil Chicken - a ground chicken and basil dish, pretty traditional. Incredibly flavorful here; this dish is a hit or miss with alot of Thai places, and Thai Aree hits! Pad See Yew - this was the only dish that I didn't enjoy all that much, but mostly because I found my love of Pad See Yew at River Kwai, which if you remember that gem, closed down a while ago. Why why why??? Haven't ever found a place that makes it quite as good. Sigh. But overall this isn't the best place for pad see yew, Thai Bowl is ok for that. I'll definitely be back. It's a small quiet restaurant, and the owner is just so sweet and nice. The food came out pretty quickly, and he takes the care to explain each dish you want to order in more detail so you know exactly what's in it. Street parking is also free (yay). My friend says she thinks it's the best Thai restaurant in Chicago. Check it out and decide for yourself :).

Okay so even after not being able to receive delivery from this place twice and refusing to ever attempt to order from here again... I cracked. I just hear to many great things about it. This time I went with carry out. I was in the restaurant for less than five minutes, and was more than impressed by their outstanding service. The feel of the place is great as well. The food, I cant quite remember what I ordered... I apologize it was about a month ago. But parts of the meal were outstanding, others fell short when I compare it to some of the other Thai I've had. However, it was still good food! I will be back here, and can easily see it becoming a regular for my family.

Hands down my favorite Thai place in Chicago. Every time I have been in (and I am here often) the service is outstanding. The food has always been stellar. The fried rice with curry is heavenly. I have tried almost everything on the menu (the menu is not very big) without a single failure. I only wish they were open for lunch...

We found Thai Aree House through Yelp as we were driving through Chicago on a cross country trip. From the outside it's not much, but the service is amazing and so is the food. The egg rolls were simple and delicious. Be warned, spicy means spicy here.

First off my family and I have been going to this place for almost 30 years (I'm 37). They use to be on Addison right around the corner where there is a newer (but not better, not even close) Thai restaurant, the Thai Siam. Before that they were on Lawrence in Albany Park wayyy back when, I hardly even remember that one. Hell, Eddy (the host/proprietor) was a young kid when we started going their. Definitely the longest time our family has gone to any particular restaurant. I guess you can tell we kinda like it. Enough of the history lesson, how's the food you ask? I think it is the best Thai place in Chicago(and I'm a self acclaimed foodie), definitely the best value given the great quality of the food. I've had most the dishes on the menu and they are almost all at least very good if not excellent. The curries, Panang, Kang Pa, etc. are excellent! The char beef salad, Yum Nue or Nue Num Tok is savory, spicy and exquisite (I have the menu in front of me). Excellent soups! The Tom Ka Kai which is a spicy coconut, lime soup is incredible! But so is the Tom Yum and Tom Ka Kai. I haven't had the others because those three are so damn good! They also have very good appetizers, the satays, spring rolls, egg rolls and the mee krob (puffy, crispy, noodles in a sweet and spicy sauce...mmm). They also use to have a fried snapper that was outstanding but I don't see it on the menu, you might ask though. Although they don't have much of a desert selection the coconut ice cream, which is homemade, is just a fantastic finish to the meal. I think it has lychees in it too, so tasty! Well, if you made it through all that thanks for reading. I could keep going really. I mean this place is a bit of an institution in our family. PS. Just in case you needed an extra bit of praise, my family had gone to Thailand a few years back (we are the original multi-cultural family) and made friends with some well respected Thai folks. Well, they had a chance to come to Chicago and of course we took them to a few Thai restaurants (including the one around the corner on Addison). This was there favorite one in town by far, besides Arun's. Of course, Arun's is a $100+ per person and isn't meant as an everyday Thai restaurant. PPS WARNING! They spice there foods very hot in general. If you order mild you will get medium. Medium=Hot and Hot...well let's not go there. Otherwise, Bon Appetit!

Finally writing a review after several delicious dinners at Thai Aree House, which still holds the title of Best Thai in my opinion. What sets it apart? Fresh ingredients, super-friendly service, and the TASTIEST shrimp pad thai I have ever had. The sauce is clean and flavorful, not heavy and soggy like too many other restaurants, and the shrimp taste like they've been on the grill for a minute or two, with just a hint of char-flavor to them that extends throughout the dish. At the end of the meal, we were given complimentary fresh fruit - watermelon and what we thought was mango at first but turned out to be persimmon, which was sweet and tasty. Definitely a 5 star meal every time!

The food here is excellent. The service is attentive and prompt. The only thing missing is the decor, hence the one star deduction, but overall, my favorite Thai place in the neighborhood.

This is my second favorite Thai place in the city. Right after, Siam Rice and Noodle on Sheridan. Unfortunately, Siam is too far from my house to get it often so I decided to try this place and now its my back-up Thai restaurant. The panang is delicious as well as the pad see ew/pad kee mao. Its a little different than Siam (which I absolutely love!) but its definitely home style food not altered for the American palate.

I was wrong, I ordered a heat level 6 the second time I went, and it makes me think the first time I must have actually had something like an 8, because this time it was a lot more tolerable. Still equally as delicious, and still had a lot of heat, just not as painful. This place is awesome.

Thai Aree House was definitely a great surprise for the wife and I. We were in the mood for Thai, and for just moving into Jefferson park, we found this little gem through, of course, Yelp! And we weren't let down. We ordered the fried eggrolls, chicken panang, beef lard nar, and beef ka prow(sp?). All were dishes were good. The owner was very kind as well, even giving a little more extra rice when he asked how many people were eating. In summary, good food, normal pricing, good service. Will definitely return back!

I live in Logan Square and walked to Thai Aree to have dinner there for the first time. YUM! I am delighted to finally have found a tasty Thai spot within walking distance. Both my friend and I had curries (Panang and Red) that totally charmed our taste buds. Thai Aree will definitely become a frequent destination!

Best place for authentic Thai on the Northside, but be forewarned, authentic means unbelievably spicy hot if you ask for the food the way Thai people like it. The owner takes a hands on approach at this little neighborhood place, and remembers me even though nowadays it's months between visits. I think he likes to see me sweat and cry when I eat there, but I like a little pain with my Thai food, especially when it's hot and humid in Chicago. Have no fear, they will certainly tone it down for you if you ask for it that way, and if you're not that familiar with real Thai food, that's what I suggest. I also suggest you try the shrimp cake appetizers, and order at least one curry dish with tofu instead of meat.

god, i really wanted to like this place. the first time i came here we ordered basil chicken (thai style) - and it was GOOOOOOOD. i mean, really good. i mean it. and i was really happy i came. the 2nd time, i ordered the pad see ewe. that is usually my go-to dish - my test dish for all thai restaurants. it was really not good. like, really. not. it was dry. now, how can PSE be dry? it was like there was no sauce at all. and maybe that's the way it's supposed to be prepared - i dont know. it was really disappointing :( we ordered the shrimp in a blanket - those were okay, too. the good news is, my friend ordered the basil chicken, and it's still amazing. i would come back for the basil chicken, definitely. but that's the only dish i trust.

i live five blocks from here, and have never been. this happens a lot. i like my late lunches. a few trips to siam left me wanting a bit more. these guys don't open until 4. finally, today was the day. i'm really glad i went. one of the best quick-meal experiences i've had lately. one of, if not the best red curry i've ever had. the flavor was amazing. it didn't look like the blended type of red curries you mostly see, but had a bit of separation, like ghoulash. the spices were in full effect at "medium", just enough to get you a little sweaty. super nice guy waited on me who i assume was the owner. five stars, definitely. i will be back!!!!!

Ok I have to premise this...... When I ask for hot and spicy I usually get something that has a kick, but I'm always having to add additional hot and spicy goodness to really get it to where I want it to be. As a matter of fact I will go out on a limb and say I like hot and spicy every type of food. So I really didn't think it would be any different when I went to Thai Aree. Even after I asked for hot and spicy, even after the nice man taking my order asked if I was sure "hot and spicy here will make you sweat", and especially after he provided me with extra hot sauce and a few extra chilli peppers "all you have to do is wash and cut and throw in" in my take out order I thought for sure I was going to have to bust out the sirracha in my pantry. So when I took a bite of my Khee Mao I realized very quickly they're not messing around AT ALL..as a matter of fact this was the first time I've been really listened to when I said "extra hot and spicy please". AMAZING!!!! Also it was just really good in general. The extra broccoli I asked for was super fresh, the tofu great, the noodles spot on, and as I looked closer at it I realized there were all sorts of peppers in this dish...this is why the spiciness was more complex than I was expecting. Half is in the fridge for my husband, with a note that says "proceed with caution" I also ordered spring rolls good, fresh, but really you can't really screw up a spring roll. However a note about that. Normally I'm used to spring rolls having bean sprouts, tofu, and egg--not sausage, so when I stared to order my noodle dish and asked for tofu the nice man backtracked and asked if I knew the spring rolls had sausage in them...most servers at little hole in the wall Thai places don't usually pay that much attention to details like that. He did.... I just moved in steps away from this place, I think this could be the beginning of an amazing relationship.

A friend introduced me to Thai Aree, and I can't believe I hadn't let him convince me to go here earlier. This place is amazing, and the food above and beyond the other standard Thai places in Chicago. I just returned from Thailand, and the food here tastes remarkably like the hand and homemade, freshly cooked food off of the street carts in Bangkok. You can almost feel yourself sweating next to the zooming cabs and tuk tuks that fly by. The panang curry is sweet, spicy, slightly creamy and lingers in your mouth in all of its delicious, coconut-y glory. The young papaya salad is fresh, with bursts of spicy red pepper cut by the delicious peanut finish. Thai Aree will set a new bar against which the mediocre, paint by numbers Thai food that is all too prevalent in Chicago is compared. You must try this place!

One of the better Thai food places on the northwest side. Very generous portions for a reasonable price. They do not shy away from the spice, which in my opinion is a great thing.

  • Lynn G.

We love it here. The owners are great and prepare dishes to your preferences; they're very interested in knowing how spicy you can handle your Thai food before making something too hot. The owner even offered my sister a book about Thailand when he found out she would be studying abroad nearby. We love it here and go quite a bit.

I used to live in Lincoln Square where there were several Thai options. My favorite of which, all things considered, ended up being Opart. Now that I am in Logan Square, Thai Aree House is the closest, most reasonably priced, and very tasty alternative. I use the spicy basil dish with ground chicken (pad ka prow) as my measuring stick, it's all I've had here, but it's awesome.

Ha, I decided to write this review because I am currently experiencing a huge craving for their Tom Yum soup....and I see I'm not the only one. Yes, it's the best. Yes, I'm serious. It's actually been awhile since I've eaten here. It's not fancy. It's not a "dining experience" ambiance wise, but it's cozy and warm and the owner is great....just makes you want to root for this place. Focus on the food..it's all about the food. I love spicy and Thai Aree does too. I've been wowed by everything I've tried here. I definitely need to make a trip back soon!

Go Here. I have been somewhat disenchanted with local Thai options (I've tried a lot), until now. Dining at Thai Aree I actually forgot for a moment I was still in Chicago. The best Lard Nar I have had in the city by far. The noodles are the perfect texture with a rich flavorful sauce, and the meat was much higher quality than most thai places. And per their recommendation, asian broccoli. So good. Charming vintage 80s thai hole-in-the-wall interior. Friendly staff, eager to make recommendations. Next time I will opt for spicier than their suggestions, but I tend to like things spicier than what is usually served in the midwest. Delicious Tom Kha Ga. Amazing fresh salad with complex and authentic Thai mix of flavors. Home made spice condiments, also very authentic. I will be back soon!

Decor aside, this place offers some truly disgusting food. It's always offensive to read a litany of great reviews on Yelp and then discover how wrong they are, frustrating as well! We ordered drunken beef noodles, panang curry and the classic pad thai with beef, both of which lacked flavor and fresh ingredients. The service was pleasant but this is obviously irrelevant when the food is so bad. We compared this experience with our favorite Thai restaurant Thai Classic on Clark and everything here was flavorless, old, and sterile.

    (1)
  • Greg S.

service great, curry solid, pad thai B+, fried rice meh. we end up comparing all thai we eat to thai spice on devon, and this just didn't cut it. not bad but make a run to thai spice (any curry, basil fried rice, pad kee mao, padga prow, three flavor red snapper, not the mongolian beef) and you will be astounded.

I have to say, I went here because I read all of your reviews. I was not impressed. Eddie was certainly a very nice man and very helpful. But when I got my food home to eat it, it just wasn't very good. I wish I could say more, but I can't, that's all I can get. My Pad Si-ew was bland and flavorless. That's all. I wish Manee Thai hadn't burned down, that was my favorite.

I have been going to this place for years. Every now and then I will try a new thai place, and they never equal up to Thai Aree. Customizable dishes, excellent service (Eddie knows my family now and will recommend adjustments and substitutes to our taste and is ALWAYS spot on) and it's BYOB! Please try this place- you won't regret it! :)

very excellent thai food! my husband and i wanted to try a new thai restaurant and got very lucky with thai aree house! we ordered the pad thai, tum yum soup and panang chicken - so freakin' good! their food is fresh and authentic. their service is friendly. i'm looking forward to going back the next time we have a hankering for thai food!

I grew up a block away from Thai Aree and my parents have been going there since way way way back in the day when they were on lawrence...So, this place has shaped my Thai tastes...Eddie taught me how to use chopsticks when I was 8...but anyways... The food here is always extremely fresh- in the summer they use peppers that they grow out back. I absolutley LOVE their Tum Ka Kai! and they're vegetarian dishes (i went through a phase when I was 12) are pretty stand out- try the vegetables in black bean sauce. They're salads are really good especially the Yum Nue which has steak, i believe, but is extremely good with chicken. Lots of lime, which I love, but sometimes it can get a little salty. I think they're prices are fantastic given the portions and the quality of the food. I have never ever been disappointed in Thai Aree.

Since moving to this area a few years back I've been devoted to a regular family Thai place right around the corner. She's been perfectly good to me, she never causes trouble and I always know what to expect. Until last week, I knew nothing about Thai Aree- it certainly doesn't have lots of curb appeal to get my attention... But Thai food for me is about adventure, so for a little side action I strayed in here like the lying cheat Thai food lover that I am... Yeah, after one visit I know I'll be sneaking in here for now on for my Thai needs- can't believe I waited so long. The menu includes a lot more real Thai basics than other places in the area. In one meal I was only able to try a few dishes, but they were all winners- grilled Thai sausage- as greasy as it's supposed to be, pretty good Somtom (although I missed the dried fish-food looking shrimps some places use), my curry was really outstanding- everything I could ask for. It was so nice to be able to get enough heat in a dish too- 'Chop Pet' as I say in my best weak-ass Thai actually worked! So the food suggests this place could be 5 star for me, but the ambiance is holding me back until I visit again and confirm. I'm guessing if I bond with the friendly owner I'll be in for some serious treats- this seems like that kind of place where a person can learn and enjoy.

Best Thai food I've ever had, hands down. Also easily accessible, by Carl Schurz High School at Milwaukee & Addison. I got the Nam Sod for an appetizer, which was really good. It was fungus salad with chipped pork, chilis, veggies, and crushed peanuts in a lemon/lime broth. Very tangy and good. For the appetizer I got the garlic beef. The vegetables and the beef were one of the best, most flavorful meals I've ever had. I don't know how the veggies and beef could have been any more FLAVORFUL, unless God himself had grown them. I know I've said flavorful about five times, but that word sums this place up. The tom kha gai soup was absolutely incredible. I already want to go back a few days later. I will probably order some other dishes and post as to how good they are. I have heard multiple people say that this is by far their favorite Thai restaurant in Chicagoland, and it is a hidden gem. No Yelp reviews? WTF. The owner, Eddie, is really cool too. He goes out of the way to make you feel more than welcome. Prices were normal (8-9 for an entree) and they take credit cards. The peppers are really spicy here, so be careful when ordering something too hot. Definitely come support this outstanding restaurant.

No crab rangoon!? What? Oh don't you worry you're pretty little head because this menu is brimming with authentic Thai dishes, some of which I have never seen in a typical Thai restaurant. The tom kha kai soup is served in a type of soup tureen with a heating element, meant to be shared at the table. It was very citrusy and not as pungent as some other versions I've had. It was really delicious. Thai spring rolls were good, but not great. I can't wait to go back. This seems like THE place to try new dishes. (I waited a week for Tim to write the first review and suddenly there are three! So much for manners.)
