So I was a very regular customer at Niu (the parent restaurant on East Illinois by AMC) and I loved their food and drinks. So it was disappointing to see that they never brought along their signature dishes like Japanese Fried Rice, Red curry or their signature drinks - Sake Mojito, Green Tea Zen Mojito. Ah well, I quelled my disappointment and sat down to dinner with a friend who was a regular customer at the original Niu. The waiter came in literally 30 sec after we sat to see if we wanted appetizers. Clearly he was new to this - he did that a few times (coming too soon to take the order) and even gave us our check without asking if we wanted dessert. Ah well - such things happen in a new place with someone who didn't seem like he had been a waiter before. I am sure he will get better and friendlier with time. However to give him credit - when we had initially asked for some chili sauce on the side, he said he didn't have any (only the sweet chili version) but later on he did find chili sauce and bring it to us. Definitely nice of him to do that. The food was quite good - I ordered the soft shell crab appetizer that came with oranges, edamame and avocado. The sushis I ordered - the Flamer was great but the other one with the Alaskan crab was ok. I had about 4 pieces each left on my orders which I asked them to pack for me to take with me. (I came home to discover that two of the Flamer pieces were missing which seems really odd - not sure what happened there but I don't want to speculate). I looked at the fairly large check (~$120 for 2 people - this included 4 drinks) and they had charged us $1.00 for some chili/ spicy sauce we ordered on the side - are you kidding me? For 1-2 tablespoons? The woman who seemed to be the manager had the nerve to tell me that they did the same at the other Niu when I said I was a regular there. I have eaten at Niu for 4 years and I have never had to pay for a side of sauce. I miss "Chai" from the original Niu - he was so nice. She did then take it off the check but that definitely added to the less than superb experience we were having there. Overall it seemed more expensive compared to Niu especially for the rolls ($!5). I doubt I would go back anytime soon despite it being so close to home for me. I still miss the signature dishes from Niu and maybe its just the hiccups that come with a new place but unless they added those dishes on the menu, I might just go to the original Niu even if it is farther away. There are a lot of nice and less expensive sushi places in and around that I might frequent instead.

Crappy sushi. So disappointing. This place is right on. Michigan Ave and must cater to tourists who won't return

Such a meh place. after the symphony, and gladly found this place is still open after 10. Decided to grab a bowl of ramen and then got really disappointed. The ramen was meh. The broth was meh. I'm sure it's not tonkatsu. And the meat was overlooked. The vegis were not fresh. Also got the orange juice. It tasted so weird, like with alcohol in it. (Though they insisted no) The service was pretty bad as well. A lot of people were friends of the waiters. But it's pretty late, so I can understand. But overall, THE FOOD, IS, JUST, SO, BAD.

Let me start by saying that the quality of the fish used at Niu B is excellent. Since that is by far the most important quality when it comes to sushi, my experience started out on the right foot. When I was seated, I was immediately served water with cucumber which was a wonderful surprise. If you've never had the pleasure of eating sushi and cleansing your palate with cucumber infused water, you're missing out! I started with the Miso Soup and it was very good. I ordered the Lychee Martini in hopes of trying something a little different. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was a very light and refreshing cocktail. Something I'd happily order again. For my meal I ordered the Maki Roll, Mellow Yellow Roll, and two pieces of Salmon Sashimi. Everything was wonderful! The Mellow Yellow Roll is so unique and beautiful. The presentation of both rolls was very impressive. I've noticed several complaints regarding the prices of the sushi. Sushi is quite similar to steak in that pricing dictates quality. So if you can't tell the difference between a $10 Applebees Steak and a $40 Ruth's Chris steak, by all means, go to Applebees. Yes, Niu B is a bit higher on the sushi price scale, but it was worth the price. My next trip to Chicago will lead me right back here to try out the other rolls that Niu B has to offer. If I could give this restaurant a 4.5, I would!

One of the best sushi I ever tried. Fresh fish and a great presentation. Something simple like a hot tea they serve you in a clear teapot with a cute cup. Something like a hot and sour soup would be in a nice ceramic bowl you may see in Asian History Museum. Oh and did I mention an amazing service!

to my previous p.s. they actually seem to be shaking things up! We're pleasantly surprised, keep up the good fight! They have added Ramen and a noodle section to the menu, smart. Service is improved and the scene, whether manufactured or not, is a little better. As mentioned earlier, we live VERY close by so the convenience factor is huge, if they can get it together -- it's looking good for a cold winter and some HOT ramen. bravo p.s. next suggestion, how about a better name? maybe too late for that? Niu Asian Fusion (south loop) -- just call it what it is and don't sound like a "newbie" LOL

I ordered a variety of foods. Starting with appetizers: I ordered the miso soup which was way too salty for my liking. The Ocean salad is my favorite at NIU on Illinois but the B location really cut back on the size portion. The stuffed clams came with only 4 shells but very tasteful. The raw scallops were sliced thin and had roe on top, delicious. Moving on to entrees: I loved their sashimi because they were generously cut just like NIU on Illinois. I just wished they had other varieties instead of the common ones like salmon, tuna, and yellowtail. My kids' favorite at NIU is the sea bass appetizer but NIU B has a sea bass dinner so I tried it. The dish was made with a different flavor. The sea bass was moist and delicious, breaks apart in your mouth. A variety of maki rolls were ordered and we're all pretty good. However, I didn't like how one dish had aluminum foil under the maki when plated?? Was that a mistake? If it wasn't, the presentation for that 1 dish was sloppy looking. The next time I go I will have to try the cherry blossom which I totally forgot about.

I should have written a review 2 weeks ago, because I really liked them! We went there for dinner on the 18th, and then ordered it to go two more times before Christmas. When we got back in town this past week, we ordered it again and they had apparently changed their entire menu- so they said. It's possible they just made the wrong thing, but whatever happened, it was not good. While we enjoyed our dinning in experience, the restaurant was ridiculously cold, and my mom had to ask a few times for her silverware (she can't use chopsticks lol).

My wife and I went here Wednesday night after the gym right down the street!. We both have been here numerous times. I myself used to visit Oysie (sp) before they left!. Last night left a wonderful taste in my mouth and stomach. From the drink the PLT 6 which was FANTASTIC!!!.... to the Gyoza to the Lyechee Tea Smoked Duck Breast to the rolls we each had. I was compelled to write a review. The server was also very patient and attentive. PLEASE-PLEASE-PLEASE continue to keep up the great work. Hopefully they will stick around a lot longer than its predecessor..... The ONLY reason I did not give a 5 is because I have not tried a majority of the menu yet!. :-)

I loved the service here. This is my first time here since I'm visiting from New York. The sushi was really good. We got the Ume and California roll and the rice was really soft. The sushi itself was fresh as well. We also got the seaweed salad and it was really good. I didn't expect that there was going to be green salad on the salad lol.. because every time I eat seaweed salad, it doesn't come with cucumbers or tomato. Overall the salad was really good. My cousins shared the tonkatsu Ramen and they said the Ramen was good. I myself, got the spicy miso Ramen and it was really delicious. It wasn't as spicy as I thought it would be. The Ramen was really good and everything else tasted delicious. They also give u a candle on the table so It made the restaurant feel really fancy. I would come here again. When I revisit Chicago.

Not the most hospital Establishment on Michigan. I was on Michigan ave to take in sights with family for father's day and my elderly mom needed to make a bathroom stop. Went into Niu which was empty at the time and was refused access to bathroom! I understand policies of not having a public access to bathroom but taking a hard stance on Sr citizens; a nearly 70year old lady is a bit absurd and downright inhumane. Luckily there's was a segway place (city segway tours) that was extremely gracious and accommodating and allowed her access. Use to eat at Niu occasionally but will never return

I ordered the dragon roll; the rolls had non-uniform size but most were decently large and all were filled properly. If you're looking for dessert, I recommend the lychee sorbet, which had good texture and tasted very good. The sorbet also contained jello bits and mango puree, which added a nice touch.

It was our first time here and surprisingly, food was awesome and priced right. We were afraid that it will be overpriced due to its location. Wifey's tonkatsu ramen soup was very tasty and pork belly melting in your mouth. I have the pleasure of having the Dragon maki and was very good with side of spicy mayo. Host was very polite and our waitress was always asking us if we need anything. Definitely a place to check out if you are close by.

The prettiest food presentation in the Chicagoland mid-priced Asian Fusion world. Competitively priced and portion. A notch up to the common menu. Decent taste. For 2: share a Ramen + 1 maki will suffice. WINE LIST -- decent selection that is below $10 per glass. CHERRY BLOSSOM ($12) -- one big half a scoop of spicy tuna. Impressive avocado wrapping. SPICY MISO RAMEN ($12) -- 2 big rounds of perfectly grilled pork, 1 half egg, bamboo shoots, 2 slices of rice cakes, and my favorite wood ear. Medium spice. The artistically pleasing bowl is inconveniently functional. THE FLAMER ($15) -- skip it. The baked shrimp tempura batter is hard. Nice and colorful. SALTED CARAMEL CAKE ($8) -- the perfect ending to a meal. Light, fluff and crunch. Unique. Presentation looks like a painting with red flying birds. Impressive. SERVICE -- Tak is informative, smart with good recommendations. If you are curious and bored, seek out Tak's knowledge of Chinese culture and history. He also knows the level of dryness between wines. An impressive man. VENUE -- The window area can be cold. Clean and organized. Warm -- modern decor with wood accents and slats. Table placement is tight.

My boyfriend and I found ourselves hungry on Christmas Eve. We came into niu b at 9:45 pm. Service was excellent. Tak was very knowledgable about the menu. He made great suggestions which were all really good. Loved the cherry blossom app he suggested. We chose the flamer, rock n roll, ultimate spider, and the summer roll. We definitely had plenty to take home. My boyfriend was beyond pleased. We will definitely be back. Thank you Min and Tak!

It's my second time since they have been open. They did indeed fixed and changed few things. Which made a difference for me. They added Beef tataki!!!! Which is amazing, super tender and jucy! Great option for a starter can also be tuna tataki as well as himachi tartar! I litterally fell in love with the Flower roll, just super fresh amazing fish!!! And Hawaiian sunset is a great choice as well! Service is ok, but over all it a great place in the neighborhood!

After a long, arduous day of work in the sun, I took a detour from my route home to head to Oysy, one of my long time fav sushi restos in the South Loop area. To my dismay, they were no longer at their location. How could this be?! How could Oysy be gone?! "nuib" as in "newbie", had replaced it. My heart was broken, although just temporarily. I was pretty hungry so I decided to head in and check the new place out. What I found was a revamped, inviting space with a warm 'Palm Beach' feel to it. It wasn't busy so I decided to sit at the sushi bar. It's important to get to know your sushi chef in order to learn about the inspiration and ingredients. I was fortunate to be the only one at the sushi bar and to chat with the executive sushi chef, who was surprisingly, extremely friendly and talkative! I was in the mood for something sweet and salty, so I started off with the "Mellow Yellow", which consisted of fresh Norwegian salmon, tempura crunch, avocado, spicy mayo, topped with mango (or wrapped in), ginger sauce, and dried red pepper flakes. Perfect!! My kind of summer roll and not to heavy for a specialty roll. It left me with just enough room to order one more roll. My second roll, super white tuna with avocado, was simple but delicious! If available, I always order super white tuna. If it's buttery and melts in my mouth, then it's of high quality, which is exactly how this was. This tells me a lot about the fish a sushi restaurant receives. Another perk about sitting at the sushi bar was learning about the different special sauces created for a few of the other rolls and getting to taste them! The sushi chef spoke proudly about his creations and his positive energy added to my experience. Overall, my experience was a great one! I recommend coming to "nuib" with an open mind and leave the comparisons to Oysy elsewhere. "nuib" has a new and exciting approach and more importantly, the fish is high quality and quite delicious!

Fairly new restaurant in the area. I've tried it a few times now and have had a bit of all the different items on the menu.. Their sushi and fish are good. My favorite rolls are Mellow Yellow (ginger and mango combined with salmon really gets me lol) and Ocean Maki (love rolls wrapped in cucumber). Tuna tataki app is delicious! The Korean kalbi beef is not as good as it could be. The tempura udon is good and you really get your money's worth as it is a pretty big portion. The Shoyu ramen is pretty good too, although not sure if it beats out some of its other Chicagoland ramen competitors. Depends what you order really! I'll always come back because their location is convenient and the sushi is fresh!

While walking back from the museums, we stumbled upon this place since we were in the mood for sushi. Overall decor and mood is nice but we were sat at a 2 top table squeezed between two other 2 top tables so it felt a bit claustrophobic. I wish we would've had some more room and privacy from the other tables but it was not terrible. The prices were more than average but it tasted pretty good. We ordered 4 rolls and an app, all delicious. Jade, our server, was super nice and made our experience very enjoyable.

I have been here twice since opening, and the second visit showed they had shaken some of their opening week jitters. The first visit was met by some pleasant but sporadic service. And the militant was a little strange because some girl was being hovered over by the chefs and some well-dressed gentleman who appeared to be either management or ownership. This wouldn't have been so bad that we not been sitting next to her. However, the maki was very good and priced competitively compared to nearby sushi restaurants. The second trip was much, much better. The rolls were of the same, above- average quality. The service was smoother, but two of the three chefs seemed preoccupied with socializing with staff, and the third chef seemed to be covering the lion's share of the work. The salmon roe was way too fishy, so that was a bit disappointing. The Mexican role is not very spicy; the rock 'n roll was delicious; the Rogue beer is a must.

They could provide more variety and choices in the menu but the food they do have tastes lovely. Service and atmosphere is definitely nice and relaxing whether you're going there to eat alone or with a group of people. I also like it because the prices are very decent and reasonable for the food and service they provide. I love the food and definitely one of my favourite places for lunch or dinner!

Now I know why it's called newbie. This was probably the worst sushi I've had EVER. Trust me, don't waste your money and stomach space for it.
