All you have to do is follow the smell! This little shack is family run and is a diamond in a ruff! Their menu is limited with the basic burger, hot dogs and fries. The must try item here is the skirt steak sandwich, it's seasoned just right and grilled to tender perfection and topped off with a side of yummy greasy fries! If that's what your craving then Mr. D's won't disappoint and you won't be able to find a better fast food joint in the area!

Awesome fries, Awesome Ka Bobs, awesome steak sandwich. My favorite food in chicago. I have always hated steak sandwiches but the one at Mr Dee's has no bones, gristle, hunks of fat or any other nasties. The only steak sandwich in the world I will eat. Just awesome. Small menu but how much do you need. Hipsters, yuppies, and torists stay away please. Don't ruin this place like you did Kuma's.

Mr.D's is 5-star worthy hands down one of thee greatest sandwiches i have ever eaten in my life!I don't even know where to begin really. The steak sandwich was cooked perfectly.Tender, charred, juicy and very very flavorful. The fries are great to.I feel almost shameful that I didn't know about this hidden treasure until a few days ago.The sandwich was so good,It made me want to smack my girlfriend!I literally tried to bite her hand off for trying to steal some of my steak sandwich.I wanted to savor every bite of this sandwich all by myself no sharing.IMO if you love steaks or steak sandwiches,Mr.D's is an absolute must try.I went to bed dreaming about eating another steak sandwich you know that's not even right.

LOVE MR D'S!!! When I spent time serving overseas this was that sacred ' first meal when I get home' meal...shish ka-bob sandwich, extra lemon, and their #2 rated fries in the Redeye last year....squeeze one lemon wedge on the sandwhich and one wedge on the fries, ketchup, and watch OUT!!

I used to work right across the street for 7-years, so I've had many meals at Mr. D's. This place is a classic, old-school diner. Mike and Ann, the owners, are very friendly, and have been working side by side for over 30-years. The shish-ka-bob sandwich and the steak sandwich are both excellent! Some times it can be hard to find a table.

First of, they should change the name to: Mr D's best Steak sandwich and shish-kabobs. This hole in the wall, generic looking place was visited by WGN's Chicago Best. So, I decided to try it. Everything that the show describes is true. And the steak sandwich. Oh boy, if the locals and dedicated customers(which I saw a lot of), say that this is the best steak sandwich and fries(natural cut from whole, fresh potatoes), that under $10 can buy, then why argue? I'm not a die hard steak sandwich eater, so I'll have to take their word. The menu is simple. And where else can u find a local fast food place where u eat it first there, and pay when you're done eating. Love that. Kind of like, we're not going to take your money unless you're completely satisfied. Works for me. And it will work for you. Make sure you try this place asap if you want to try great, fresh steak in a sandwich. I guess my only gripe is that I wish that place stays open later. Closes at 6pm on weekdays, 5pm on weekends. cash only.

The best steak sandwiches in chicago!!! Unbelievable fries! Must try, but be prepared to crave it!!! The only way not to love this places basic yet unique flavors is if you do not have any sense of what good flavor is!

Love hole in the wall places like this. Menu is small, but they certainly deliver in quality. As mentioned, the Steak Sandwich was awesome, well seasoned, tender and flavorful and was complimented perfectly by the fresh bun. Need to go back asap to try the Shish Kabobs.

Great char grilled steak sandwich. Very tender. Kabobs are always great. My only hiccup is the fries, sometimes they are a bit soggy, however always we'll seasoned. Great overall neighborhood joint.

Since one of my friend seems to frequent this place and likes to give rave reviews about it, I said sure why not since its in my neighborhood. I never really noticed the building before, it kinda just blends in with the neighborhood, doesn't stand out much. As of the interior, that doesn't say much either, very simple with a simple menu. If only I had enough money I'd would like to be one of their investors to help remodel the place. Upon entering I see a woman and 2 other guys, I assumed the woman and older man were the owners based on the few pictures I saw hanging from the wall. Like the fact that the actual owners are putting in work, don't see that much anymore. Ok so about the food, I decided on the pork loin kabob since the place is calld "shish-kabobs" Also that's the only kind of kabob on the menu =/ the rest of the menu has hot dog's, burgers, steak sandwich's, and Italian beef. The fries are fantastic! Super hot and fresh. I did see a potato slicing machine right on the wall =) As for my pork kabob, the taste was decent. Only problem I had with it, was that it wasn't cooked all the way thru =/ more on the outside if anything. Nice neighborhood spot, all sandwiches come with fries!!! Great deal right there =D Next time I should try the steak sandwich since that's what a lot of customers kept ordering that day.

WOW... everything is fresh and love how it is a cozy place. My favorite is the fresh cut fries dipped in the Au Jous. The only thing that sucks is they don't serve chicken!! I don't eat red meat or pork but boy did I want to eat that steak sandwich that is extremely popular!! My bf said it was the best sandwich of his entire life. We have the same taste buds so I know it was worth 5 stars. PROS: Food and service CONS: Not in downtown and no chicken

Quite simply brilliant. I will be so sad when this place gets discovered by the masses. It blows a place like hot dougs out of the water without the ridiculous line. Please diners drive ins and dives never come here. Keenan area that has so few good restaurants this is truly a diamond in the rough. You can thank me later

Went for the first time today. Had the shish-kabob sandwich. It was so delicious. Grilled to perfection and the pork was tender and flavorful. Will definitely go back!

Great stuff. Been there twice. AWESOME FRIES! AWESOME BEEF KABOB! GREAT Cheese Burger!!! Guessing he uses tenderloin for the kabob. Delicious! Grape Soda!!! Yummy! Run by Father/Mother/Son. Love it! Another great local joint! 4 tables..... Going back for sure. Next time, Steak Sammich!!!!!!!

I'm not a greasy food fan, but this place has amazing steak sandwiches. For like $7-8, it's pretty cheap too. That's really all you need to know.

The fries are beyond amazing the burgers and stakes sandwiches are on point every time. No seasoned fries but they are better than five guys.

I've been coming here since I was able to walk. I grew up less than a mile away. I can't imagine there is a better shish kebab sandwich anywhere in the world. The sauce he uses is so incredible. I always get a small cup of it for the fries. Combined with the lemon he gives you to squeeze it's luscious deliciousness onto the luscious deliciousness, well, you are getting glimpse of an idea of how amazing this is! And to watch the rhythm he cooks with, mixed with the two Greeks always sitting in the corner he raps with between the turning of the pork. It's just a feeling you have to experience. 30 years and I have never had anything except the shish kebab there. I'm very adventurous. But I don't mess with perfection. I will drive the hour from Naperville. I can't believe Mr. D's crept into my head at 1230 am. No chance to get there for at least 36 hours. I can't handle reviewing anymore, it's too painful and the Pavlov is in serious effect. Go there now!

Fantastic shish-kabobs and steak sandwiches. Amazingly great fries. The burgers and beefs are good, but I hate canned giardiniera, especially when everything else they serve is fresh. However, I don't go there for the beefs or burgers. The shish-kabobs are super tender and flavorfully seasoned. Likewise with the steak sandwiches. The fries are hand cut in the front of the shop. They are so tasty you don't need any condiments. Just eat 'em hot and fresh. I saw Paul H's review where he drove out from Bartlett to find that they were closed on a Saturday. That's very odd. I've been there on Saturday's at the same time and they were definitely open. I was just there on Friday and there was no indication they'd be closed the next day.

Mr. D's is the quintessential "hole in the wall" fast food spot. It's right at the corner of Normandy and Diversey, where there is plenty of street parking for you to get your food to go or stick around to eat at one of the 6 tables inside. Here, what you see is what you get, which I really appreciate in a restaurant. But the food is actually quite good. The owner, his wife and son have been the only employees as far as I can remember. They serve the obvious vienna beef hot dogs, burgers, shish-kabobs, steak sandwhiches..but what you really come here for is the FRIES! Mr. D's was voted #2 best fries in Chicago in the Tribune(#1 was Five guys, which should not even be valid!). He cuts the fries himself, leaving just enough of the skin on and frying them to a perfect golden brown. To me, Mr. D's is the perfect Chicago hot dog joint.

Teeny, tiny little place that has been on this corner forever and ever. They serve burgers and hot dogs, but I've never tried them, I can't get past the deeeeelicious steak and "kabob" sandwiches! Incredible flavor! Perfect hand-cut, homemade fries. Absolutely perfect. Only five tables in the place, and I believe they are only open for late breakfast and lunch. It's a "Ma & Pop" place and the owners couldn't be any nicer. Absolutely a "word-of-mouth" NO FRILLS place. A Chicago hidden gem.

My parents ate here since they were kids and I too grew up on it. They have the BEST fries, shish-kabob and steak sandwiches!!!! Its a hole in the wall place owed by a sweet family who knows you by name. Its nothing fancy but its just really good!! My family jokes about how sad I would be if I could never eat their food again or if they ever closed how I might cry.

one of the best (if not the best) standard american fare fast food joints in the Brickyard & Belmont/Harlem area... and I'm talking about food quality: fresh cut fries (made from real potatoes), fresh chunks of meat grilled while you wait (souflaki aka shishkabob is unbelievably tender and soft, I recommend it), and you get an Italian bread bun, not the sponge bread. No, it doesn't get any better under 6 bucks people... next time do your mouth and stomach a favor, and rather than McD, Whitecastle, (overrated imo) Luke's, or Taco Burrito King, stop here instead. Unfortunately they close at 6PM on weekdays, and 5PM Saturdays...

There are few places on this planet that hit the spot for me like Mr. D's does. I don't come here often, but when I do, I always regret that I don't come more often. Don't get discouraged by the location or the dinky little shack; the food in here is the real deal. They offer typical Chicago fare, at very decent prices, and always made extremely fresh and made to order. I usually say otherwise, but this actually IS one of the places where I come for the fries. The proprietor is an older Greek man with his son working the register, and sometimes his wife working alongside them on busier days. The fries are freshly cut for each order, and double fried to perfection. He gives you one giant russett potato, so it's a really good portion. I talked about the fries, but I still haven't gotten to the best part; their steak sandwiches. Everything about them is perfect. From the roll, to the medium well, deliciously marinated steak, seasoned with a little bit of oregano, and loaded up with onions, tomato, and au jus. I think the charcoal grill is what makes these steak sandwiches, as well as the freshness of the steaks. It's just so juicy and so smoky, and with the perfect fries, it's hard to get any better than Mr. D's. The steak sandwich hits the spot so well for me, that I don't usually have room to try anything else. My whole family raves about the Shiskabob sandwiches from here, as well as the cheese burger, and the beef. Mr. D's is one of your typical looking, but very unique Chicago dives that everyone should try. It's even been featured on Chicago's Best and a couple of other foodie shows. Forget about all of that though, and just come for the food, because for that Mr. D's gets a 6/5. *When you eat at Mr. D's, never pay up front! Order your food and sit down and eat it, then pay when you leave. It's customary here.

Stopped in on a Monday, and the place had a lot of foot traffic, many regulars coming in for their fix of either the steak sandwich or cheeseburger... I had the kabob - it's pork grilled to perfection. Four (maybe five?) large chunks of the tenderest, no grizzle, no fat tenderloin made into a sandwich with onion and tomato. I will admit the 'char' flavor was just a tad strong, but nonetheless it was a delicious sandwich. Very good fries, akin to Gene & Jude's. My son had the steak sandwich which I will admit was AMAZING. great flavor, super tender, again - no grizzle or fat, just thin slices of perfectly cooked meat on a delicious bun with grilled onions and tomato. We both left with full bellies for $15.99, which includes two cherry RC colas... the only drawback is that it's open only till 6 during the week, good thing I live close!

So, the husband has been dying to try this place and decided to go there one weekend for lunch and bring me back a chicken kabob. Um, grossest thing I have eaten in a long time. First, there is no flavor other than char. The onion is barely cooked, making it sound like you are eating pieces of apple in between the chicken chunks. And kabob, well, there are two things on there, chicken and onion. Not my idea of kabob. Then, they shove a slice of thin and creepy mushy tomato on there with a slice of lemon. So, I guess I could have had lemon-flavored char. And the fries are mushy greasy pieces of nastiness. Police usually know good food, so I am shocked so many are in here - maybe they are eating the burgers??

  • Jason S.

Wow- simple and really good- I had the steak sandwich which was probably sirloin on a french roll, onion and tomato- really great flavor from the grill and fresh cut fries. Best fries I've had in a while. No frills here, its all about the sandwich- My friend had the Shish kabob sandwich and she loved it, I had a bite too and it had a really nice flavor. If you want a really good sandwich and fries in an old school setting this is for you.

Drove all the way from Bartlett to have a steak sandwich on Saturday (today). Based on the information posted they should be open from 10am until 5pm. Well at 1:30pm this afternoon they were closed!!!! I don't know if they have gotten so much business from being on "Chicago's Best TV" that they don't need to open on the weekends. BUT, if they have changed their hours, it would be nice if they make the changes to the postings!!!!!!! That way I don't have to drive between 1.5 and 2 hours FOR NOTHING!!!!! Ended up driving to Booby's for a steak sandwich which was good. Cannot say if Mr D's steak sandwich is better or not....... BECAUSE THEY WERE CLOSED!!!!!!

Ok so the restaurant itself is a little plain. It's this ugly little white building on the corner of Diversey ave and Normandy but the food is awesome. Steak sandwiches, amazing burgers, great fries, polish sausages, shish-kabobs and more. Not a whole lot more but I've pretty much named the things I've tried and liked. For me, there are no better burgers than this place right here. Check it out for youself.

A nice simple delicious joint located on a typical Chicago corner (old school). Great steak sandwich and fries! If your hungry try it with double meat, you'll pay extra of course, but it's worth it...and don't forget to ask for a lemon wedge.

I wish I knew abou this place when I was pregnant! I work literally blocks away at the Brickyard. I wo,uld never have thought to eat here because of how unassuming the place looks. Plain white box of a building with tinted windows! Their fries are AMAZING, long and fresh, cut on the premises and fried perfectly. I LOVE their ribeye steak sandwich. There's usually a line of people and only a few tables. They jokingly call the table by the door my table. I would give this place 10 stars. It is run by Mike a.k.a. Mr D, and his wife and son. Cash only.

In all the years I've lived on the NW side I FINALLY made it over to try out Mr. D's and it was delish!!! The shish kabob sandwich hit the spot. Succulant tender chargrilled meat with onions, peppers tomato, a brown sauce and lemon wedge to squeeze for additional flavor! All sandwiches come with fries so I got to try these famous buds and although a bit greasy for my taste they were so fresh and mushy, browned perfectly in thier hot tub of oil. While waiting for my food I watched as potato after potato was cut there right in front of me It's really nice to know that aside from the oil the only ingredient in thier fries are potato (imagine that) I'm not gonna lie the interior is a bid "sketchy' lookin and could certainly use a little color or updating because it has an extremely drab feel to it, there are only 3 tables or so to be seated at and a counter to stand at but the food was really good! I would like to try the steak sandwich next time around.

this place is pretty secluded, if you don't know what you're looking for, you might just drive past it and think, what a run down place in the middle of a residential hood. but the kabob sammy, oh, it's so good. juicy and tender, with the squeeze of lemon.... the fries are very good too. i would prefer them a bit more crispy, but they are tender and soft in the center. simple menu for great fast food.

You can not go wrong walking into mr d's for lunch or dinner! Kabob sandwhich is the best and steak sandwhich is amazing too!! Never had a bad thing to eat there. Also their French fries were voted top 3 by the Chicago trib!! To sum it up great food, great owner a real Chicago tradition!!!

  • Jose C.

I don't know how many times I would have passed this place up and written it off as another greasy fast food place, had I not tried it some years ago due to a recommendation. Don't let the nondescript appearance of Mr. D's fool you into thinking this is just another kabob place. From the outside, the tiny establishment is stark white and plain. It's no better on the inside, with its four or five small tables and no decor of any kind. But there's always people coming and going, and very often there's a fairly long line of customers savoring the delicious steak sandwiches, kabob sandwiches, and any other of the 4 or 5 other items on the menu. Personally, for me, it's all about the steak sandwiches. They are so good, and they, like all sandwiches, come with hand-cut fries that are fried in a mixture of 50% tallow and 50% vegetable oil. The prices are a wee bit on the steep side (it's about 8 bucks for a steak sandwich, fries, and a can of RC), but believe me, it's worth it. For what it lacks in hipster-attraction flair, it makes up with old-school, no-frills service and atmosphere. BTW: CASH ONLY. There is no ATM here that I'm aware of, and you have to pay after you eat, so make sure you bring the green paper!

  • Robert C.

This place, like they claim, has got to be the best sandwich in the city! The shish kabob is second to none. Nowhere in Greektown or any other place that serves kabobs can come close. They add more sauce right before they serve it and you squeeze some fresh lemon juice on top...it all blends together. The fries are fresh cut and double fried, making the kabob even better. The double cheeseburger beats most places as well. Quality in this hole in the wall is top notch. The family is all about quality of food and not so much the looks. Another thing too, if I do eat in, they are not cheap with the air conditioner like so many place are these days. The temp inside is always pleasent. Oh, and they serve my favorite drink...ice cold Dr. Pepper in the can. Mr D's rocks!

i like food. and so should you. so here. . . eat a souflaki (shish-ka-bob) sandwich one day at Mr. D's on Diversey. It's a bit west, but who cares. . . there is nothing like this place any closer. I promise. I went there once with my Pop's when I was a young'n, and ever since I've been hook. I've been known to wake up at odd hours of the night, screaming " I NEED YOU MR.D!" If you know me, then you might know that I like excessive amounts of lemon in and on everything I eat or drink. This place squeezes the perfect amount of lemon all over the sandwich, leaving the bread crispy on the outside, but soggy on the inside with the juices from the chared meat and lemon juice. It's amazing. if you want to plan a trip there with me, let me know.

This place defines Chicago. Its has 6 items on the menu and they perfect it. One of the best steak sandwiches in town. their fries are fresh cut and are always deep fried to perfection. Also they only sell canned pop, and the pop they sell Is only RC products. I actually prefer Ice cold canned pop over watered down fountain.

I can't believe I've lived in this neighborhood for 25 years and even worked in the original Brickyard Mall add a teenager and have never walked in to this place. My boyfriend is a huge food critic and is always looking for great places to eat. Well this place has definitely made it in our book of the top places to eat. I had the shish kabob sandwich , he had the steak sandwich and let me tell you, both were amazing. Oh, and don't forget the fries! The owners were also really great, they truly make everyone that walks in the door feel like friends and family.

On the corner of Diversey and Normandy, there's an old white house where you can see human traffic and grilling goodness. Hence, do not be afraid to walk into the door. Oh by the way, lunch for two (2) is under $20, so have your cash ready. Daddy J. and I were 100% sure that we made the right decision to come here for lunch. Speaking of the grill, that thing was HOT. Fortunately, the Midwestern chilly late August sorta kicked in, not to mention the ventilation here was quite alright. We had their signature steak sandwiches, with raw onions and tomatoes. O.M.G. Daddy J. and I kept on "bubbling" our heads (well, we weren't high), but it was because our food was Delicious, with a capital "D." Every order comes with made-to-order fries, super amazing that was! The man of the house, Mike, was very hospitable and beyond nice. He treated each and every customer like his family. Although the seating wasn't, at all, ample, Mike would come out, wipe the table, and invite us to sit down. Rosa J. and Daddy J. were not strangers of making friends with "strangers." When there's great food on the table, you can miraculously turn enemies into your friends! Mr. D's Shish-kabobs is located in the Montclare neighborhood on Diversey, near Harlem Ave. #76 (Diversey) CTA bus is accessible since the bus stop is front of the most aromatic White House.

Mr D's it's a family business. The couple who own the place is very nice. The sonny to. It's like it is nothing special about that place but still I want to go there. Husband grilling and frying. Wife or sonny on the register. It's a FAST FOOD place with a nice twist. I really LIKE the personal touch there. At the lunch time, there is a line. Food is GOOD. We gonna LOVE the fresh cut fries. For me, once a week is a must...... :)

This place is perfect for a quick bite and if your a parent who wants to be left alone cause it's not a place where kids will find you lol. Burgers and steak sandwich are amazing, fries are perfectly cooked which means not over done nor under cooked. Price is reasonable and the cook is friendly.

Best Steak Sandwich... All sandwiches come with fries, what more can you ask for. I guess their feature on Chicago's Best boosted up there prices, but still worth the flavor of it.

My parents put my sibling and I on this place since we were tiny. Mr D's is the local hidden gem of the Belmont Cragin neighborhood. Their burgers, freshly cut french fries and my favorite, their Steak Sandwich! If you live nearby please stop in and don't make it to Mc Donald's instead! & if you do not live nearby it's worth the drive!

Ok, it's a bit scary from the outside and the inside is a notch below a "dive", BUT if you are into authentic Chicago neighborhood joints that serve up outstanding Chicago-style grub, THIS is the place. The 1st time I dropped in, I went with the steak sandwich. It was so damn good (charcoaled marinated steak, tomato slice, onion on a hoagie-style bun smothered in nicely done hand-cut salted fries) that I HAVE to order it every time I go. I can tell everything else they serve is just as good, but I gotta have my steak sandwich. Absolutely no frills at Mr. D's (no fountain drinks, just canned RC Cola), but it doesnt matter when the food is this damn good.

Been going to this place ever since i was 11. Burgers and the steak sandwich are a must if going here. Best fries in the city imo. Friends that have moved out of state and return to chi beg to go there. Only negative are the hours. Only open til 6 pm if im correct. Go here!

This is a five star steak sandwich here, folks!!! This bad boy had SO much flavor and was so juicy that I kept thinking there was some cheese in there somewhere, but came to find that there wasn't and it didn't even need it!! Mr D's is a complete "what you see is what you get" kind of place. No smoke and mirrors here, you walk in, sit down, order and you can watch them cooking your food right before your eyes. The place is tiny, the walls are bare, and the customers are all locals, mostly blue collared fellows stopping in on their lunch break. The staff seemed like a father and son operation. I LOVE the exposed kitchen, the meats looks freshly prepared and there was a whole potato sitting right inside the fry chopper, so you know it's the real deal fries. Steak sandwich....First of all, you have to appreciate and enjoy the flank/skirt type steak. It's a bit tougher, just a tad bit chewier at times. But the secret is that it really holds in the flavor of the marinade or seasonings that Mr. D is using. I ordered mine with tomato and onion and the veggies were VERY fresh, well seasoned and enhanced the sandwich no doubt. So did the bread, which was like a french bread bun but not as firm, almost like a burger bun. This was key b/c is allowed the juices to quickly soak up in the bread, which gave it a cheese filled texture. The fries were excellent. Someone else mentioned they tasted like Gene and Judes and I completely agree. However, the fries at Gene and Judes, IMO, get a bit mushy when wrapped up with the dog. The fries here at Mr. D's stay crispy and crunchy as soon as they hit the table. Prices appear to have gone up a bit here. My steak sandwich was $7.15 before tax. But I would pay it in a heartbeat, as I know sit down places with fancy decor and all would charge twice as much for a steak sandwich like this. If you're in the area and want a quick bite, this is definitely a place to consider.

Yes. Best steak sandwiches ever. Just look around at the crowd and you'll know, these guys know how to eat. Try to get there later in the afternoon. These guys like to roll in around 11 on weekdays.

This place is as Chicago as it gets. A counter, a flat top grill, deep fryer and 3 tables and a cooler full of rc cola. Probably the best steak sandwich I have ever had in my life. It kills me that I don't live closer to this place so I can go at least once a week. The sandwich was so simple it was perfect. Steak, onions and tomato. Oh and a few extra fries I shoved into it. Go to this place. You will not be disappointed.

This is my favourite hole in the wall type place ever. Family owned and run from the start. I recommend the steak sandwich. Fries are in my opinion the best in town. Dont pass this little gem up!!

Love, Love, Love Mr. D's!!! Let me just say that the D in this case stands for delicious;-) I started coming here when I was 8 yrs old with my dad every Saturday. We would stop in for a shishkabob & steak sandwich with grilled onions & xtra au jus. Now in my 30's, I'm still making my weekly visits but now it's with my kids and they love it! His food never changes, still the same juicy sandwiches and fresh fries I remember that keep me coming back for more. I'm still in awe at how he never forgets a name and always remembers to ask me how all family member's are by name. Only flaw I can think of is they're not open on Sundays and they usually close for a month in the winter. Which has me itching for a Mr.D's fix in December, but No worries, I still LoVe this place!!!

This place is crazy good. Its one of those lowkey spots that look pretty normal but the taste and quality is out of this world. Real fries , steak sandwich is the bomb. Shishkabobs r the shiznit

steak sandwich ($6.50) - 3 stars. The steak was nicely seasoned and not dry, but as a sandwich, it was lacking oomph and wasn't balanced. Like I took a bite and was not impressed by how the sandwich tasted as a whole. Maybe too much bread-to-filling ratio, or the fillings weren't working well together for me. It didn't help that I wasn't a fan of the bread, but then I'm really picky with my breads. If this sandwich had used Romano Brand's bread and was paired with a nice, melty cheese, then it'd rate at least a 4.5. pork kabob sandwich ($6.60) - 3 stars. Same issues as with the steak sandwich. Did not eat the bread. 4 pork cubes to a sandwich. It's a waste for me to order this again because I'd be paying about $7 to eat a pork kabob, 2 tomato half-slices, and a lemon. I did enjoy the smokiness to the pork.

One of the best if not the best steak sandwiches I've had. The fresh cut fries are awesome. The Shish kabob and burgers are great too. One of the best food spots around the neighborhood. Not too expensive either.

Great little neighborhood spot!! No frills, just good ol' burgers, beefs, etc. I'll be back to try the infamous steak sandwich!

You know what I love about this place the most, CONSISTENCY! Small family ran restaurant that's only open til about 5 or 6 pm. Their steak sandwich is amazing as many times as I've had it it's always tasted great not burnt and not dry and full of flavor. They also have really good burgers that have that "off the grill" flavor served with a basket of fries. If you want some great mom n pops food this is the place you have to check it out you won't be disappointed!

Hands down the best steak sandwich in Chicago. They keep it real simple with a grilled piece of seasoned steak (i think its skirt), tomato and onion. This place is a true hidden gem. I lived near this place for years and never went in because it looks like a hole in the wall that tosses frozen meat on a flat top and frozen fries into a deep fryer. This is a hole in the wall however fresh cut fries, and literally THE BEST STEAK SANDWICH I have ever had.

Ambiance: not much to say here, it looks like a run-down counter with simple chairs and tables you might find at a church cafeteria. The service was a little brusque with not a smile to be found... except for those eating. Food: Simple and good. Thin (~2 mm) wide well-seasoned piece of steak that hits the grill and half-cooks half-catches of fire is sandwiched between a large chewy roll with onions and tomato. There is little to criticize as the meat is tender, super tasty, and smoky from being set aflame. The fries were a good texture and well-fried without being too processed like a fast-food chain. Definitely worth the $7 for the meal although would be nice to buy the sandwich individually from the fries but its a common strategy to increase profits because potatoes are dirt cheap relative to other ingredients. I recommend giving this place a shot if you're nearby.

I love the nondescript exterior and the classic vibe of the place. The shish-kabob I got was great. It was tender, juicy and filling, grilled fresh right it front of me. Prices aren't too bad either, all sandwiches are under $7.50, and they include a fair amount of fries.

I grew up in the area and haven't been here in 20 years or so. I couldn't remember how the food was since it has been so long. Though I have been on a yelp sandwich review kick and trying different sandwiches and subs around the area. So I had to try the steak sandwich here. I have to say it is excellent, probably the best streak sandwich I have had. Nothing fancy, just some tomatoes, onion, bread, and some good seasoned steak. It really has excellent flavor. Plus they give you a nice amount of fresh cut fries, which were great as well. Have to not wait 20 years to come back to this place again...

Great place. So good I went 2 days in a row. Steak sandwich with fries first day. It was very good. Went back to try the kabob sandwich and to my surprise it was even better. The fries were so good I didn't bother putting ketchup on them. They were way better then the duck fat fries that hipsters wait in line for at a certain hot dog joint.

I love this restaurant it is basically lunch and early dinner sandwiches only. They primarily have a neighborhood and local businesses clientele they have been around about 40 years. The fries are the best anywhere and i eat out a lot. The meats are grilled really tasty. I love the combos and burgers big and tasty. But what brought me here 20 yrs ago was the steak sandwiches juicy tender and seasoned just right. The Chilis excellent. It's run by mom, pop and son they are the friendliest people.

Order a Shish-Kabob at Mr. D's and watch them remove a skewer of pork and onions from a marinade and set it on a scorching-hot grill; then enjoy the spectacular aroma as the fire works its transformative magic! Once the meat is beautifully charred, they place the Kabob in a bun and remove the skewer. This Kabob is a wonderful combination of tart-savory-sweet-moist-brilliance! It is always Great! The French Fries are always terrific too. French Fries come with every sandwich, but you'll want an extra order as well; I usually do... The fries are peeled(though, some skin does remain - Yum!) and cooked fresh throughout the day. Sometimes the fries come out a little extra crispy; sometimes a little less crispy... I do prefer them a bit more well-done, but either way, they are always great here. Street parking is available throughout the neighborhood.
