First off, the people were great, the food was delicious and I really really wanted to give them 5 stars. When I sat down, one of the workers came and explained everything to me: how ordering, the amount of time to expect to wait (about 30-40 mins), and how portions worked. The food was exceptional. We all loved our food. The downside: whomever was taking orders and working the cash register was confused. On top of waiting about 40 mins for our food (which was expected and totally fine), we waited at least 10 mins at the register because they had other people's orders on ours and our stuff on theirs. The bill was $70 something which sounded right, but upon walking out of the restaurant, our receipt said we paid $90 something. I will probably go back again, but definitely not sit inside, just order to go so hopefully the bill problem wouldn't be an issue. Word of caution: check your bill before you leave.

We had the lasagna, the chicken pot pie, the mac and cheese and the johnny salad. So delicious. Just wonderful. Thank you for a relaxing and delightful weeknight family dinner. The jazz on the stereo was great too. We can't wait to come back and try the jambalaya.

I recently attended a 2 year old's birthday party and was blown away by the food served (jambalaya, mac 'n cheese and house salad with green goddess dressing) - the mom told me it was from Johnny Casserole! I became an instant fan and have placed several take-out orders since then. The guys are really friendly and the food is hot and delicious. Note that the individual sized portions are small - you'll probably need to eat 1.5 to 2 portions to feel completely full. I also wish they had some casseroles made for 4 people on their menu -- that would be the perfect size for my family. Nonetheless, it's a great option if you're hosting guests or feeding a hungry family.

I ordered a single serving chicken pot pie and my husband ordered the single serving jumbalaya. While the casseroles were tasty, it took an hour to heat in the oven. This is definitely NOT a take out place. On the positive side, staff was nice and super helpful. Doubt I"ll be back.

Great veggie pot pie and shepherds pie! Delicious kale salad. Call ahead and make reservations!!! We'll be back:)

Not that impressed with the For Your Thighs Only. It had a lot of grease, and I'm pretty hungover right now so you think I would love that. I was told it would take an hour for delivery and it took an hour and a half. I had the vegetarian lasagna when they first opened and I feel it had way too many peppers. Sounds like there are some good items on the menu so maybe I'll give them a shot. I do appreciate the casserole dish full of Tootsie Pops in the restaurant though, and they do a great job with their coffee.

Never seen a place that had 5 stars on YELP! I had to check it out and it was by far 5 stars. Small cute place that has very nice people. The food was soo good and worth the wait. Get the clam chowder (it is literally made from scratch, with just fried bacon) and the Beth Ann( amazing biscuits!) I will be eating here or take it home again!

This place is phenomenal. I attended a birthday party on Saturday here. I wasn't familiar with the place so i had no expectations going in. The table shared a spinach salad, which was great, sides of mac n cheese (not a crazy mac n cheese person, but theirs is phenomenal) and settled on ordering the veggie lasagna. The lasagna was perfect for summer, light and delicious and not being a vegetarian i didn't miss having meat one bit. I can't recommend this place enough. It was so good, I can't wait to come back. The only downside is they have a really great patio, but it started to rain and we had to come inside. The inside is nice too but it was a gorgeous day out. Oh well, oh yeah and it's BYOB also. Next time maybe i'll bring some cider with me. :)

This place is unreal. Our friend Cassie and Sean brought over a chicken pot pie casserole after our second son was born and we returned from the home from the hospital. The food was great. If they hadn't told me that it was from a restaurant, I would have figured they made it. Definitely worth checking this place out.

We've ordered on 3 separate occasions now from this place. Does that make me a regular? Love the concept and the food-- thumbs up on the Jambalaya, Chicken Pot Pie and The Hungry Hungry Hippie. Can't wait to try some of the other options.

So good! Like one of the other reviewers was saying, I'm excited about having this as an option for the cold days ahead. The owner could not have been nicer and gave us great background on the dishes and how everything works there. Not a place for a quick bite (we were quoted a 45 minute-an hour cook time if we chose to dine in) but a great cozy place to hang out with friends and chat if you have time to kill. Otherwise, with a little strategic planning with timing, you can get delivery or call ahead. We chose to bring ours home for heating and that worked really well too. We had the tuna casserole and the polish sausage casserole and we loved them both. The tuna casserole featured artichoke, which I thought was kind of a nice touch. The only slight disappointment was the roll that came with the casserole, which was a little on the dry side. I would suggest waiving your dinner roll and picking up one of the handmade buttermilk biscuits instead--those were fantastic, with the perfect amount of crisp to the otutside. Our salad was fresh and good; they use a nice variety of greens. All in all, it was basically comfort food heaven--basically the food equivalent of a hug from your mom.

First time visiting. My fiancé's suggestion: I was clueless what to have for late lunch/dinner. Ordered take out over the phone, takes 60mins which is fine with me, I'm patient. I arrived at the eta the gentlemen offered for my order to be ready. Wonderful greetings and smiles, like they were happy to see me (i was sure happy to see them). The place itself is cozy and comfortable and definitely dine-in worthy. My order was ready to go. Asked if they have desserts. He suggested the French toast with all kinds of wonderful yum yums...uncooked...bake it while I'm eating my meal he says...(I'm drooling by this point, smells so good in the place). I'll take it. I asked if they have bread, I'd like to buy extra to have with the leftovers, if there are any. I hear another cool dude suggest biscuits...mmm, yes, I'll take it. Well, I'm back at home now. The oven has been preheated to 350° for the French toast and is rearing to go. Wish me luck, I'm about to dig in: mac n cheese, shepard's pie, kale house salad, and French toast. I will check back in soon (if I'm not in a food coma)...to be continued...(fast forward an hour later) WOWEEE WOW WOW WOW!!!! Perfect in every way. The mac n cheese is so tasty and amazingly cheesy with a nice crust on top. The shepard's pie is frickin dynamite. The kale salad is fresh and yumny. The biscuits are soft and soooo tasty. The French toast is decadent and gooey. This meal is by far up there in my top three, French Laundry being #1 and Au Cheval being #2. On top of offering amazing, fresh food, their service was top notch. I love this place and will probably dine here once a week for the rest of my life.

For one thing, how can you beat a business name like Johnny Casserole? Love it! I was intrigued from the moment I heard about it! Warm, happy, kitschy goodness! Casseroles made to order and delivered to your house!! My friends hosted a party this New Years Eve and all my friend talked about for a few weeks prior was that she was going to have some casseroles made. I'm not a huge casserole person, as it reminds me of 6th grade sleepovers with my friend who was the sole culinary genius in her family. We always had tater tot casserole. Urgh. I digress.... My second concern was that there might not be any veggie options (after I came around to the idea, I realized I HAD to try some!) Lucky me and other vegetarians alike, there ARE a few veggie options on the menu (depending on your level of veggieness, you could opt for a lacto-pescatarian treat such as the Ain't Your Momma's (Tuna casserole) or a veg mac and cheese, or a veg pot pie. I sampled the For Your Thighs Only mac and cheese, which was so good, I found myself digging into the pan after the party died down, wondering when my self respect was going to kick back in. I also had a few bites of the Beth Ann Goes Veggie, the veg version of the pot pie. Oh, it was scrumptious! The only one I didn't sample was The Great Plainsman, a twist on the Shepherd's Pie with bison (for reasons that are probably self-explanatory). And bonus, I got to meet THE Johnny Casserole (who was on hand to bake those . What a nice guy!

Pick up dinner last night and I'm already thinking about what I would like to order for Sunday. I love to cook at home, and this is the next best thing! For nights I do not want to cook, I know where we are going! We just LovED it!

Hearty! say it with me again - Hearty! the Great plainsman (aka best Shepherd's pie money can buy with the exception of you making your own) is delicious! The cooking instructions are simple and straight forward, David (Johnny Casserole) also throws in some fresh chives so you can sprinkle on top of the casserole after it's been cooked for picture perfect look. Yummy and hearty. It's a bit pricey but it will feed many hungry people.

This place is very good. The owner and his employees were very nice and professional. The decor is great and cozy. The food is amazing and I cannot wait to go back. Spread the word Yelp. I love when new places come into North Center. Lets keep them coming!

I just had the Uncle Al fresco. Good Lord is that delicious. The sun dried tomatoes and basil in this pop out. It is ridiculously good, and from an Italian who has eaten his share of homemade lasagnas, this ranks pretty damn high. I'm moving this week and will be giving him a call to take care of dinner for a few nights.

Wow!!! We had the mac and cheese this weekend while walking out of Rib Fest, and it was UNBELIEVABLE. This was easily the best mac-and-cheese (for your thighs only) we have ever had. While the chicken pot pie is still our favorite, the mac and cheese is a close 2nd. Once you try one of Johnny Casserole's hot dishes, you will be hooked. The portions are huge and can easily feed a large group or family. The food was so good that we bought 4 more to take home! Cant wait to pop the mac-and-cheese in the oven for dinner later. Homemade food that uses only fresh ingredients, if you have not tried any of Johnny C's hot dishes yet, this is a MUST for anyone in Chicago.

This is a brand new mini catering business, from which I have just tried the For Your Thighs Only macaroni and cheese with shrimp and bacon. Holy delicious. Creamy, cheesy, loaded with mixins. Can't wait to try some of the others. Included on the menu is the Beth Goes Veggie (a veggie pot pie with asparagus...YUM...broccoli, cauliflower, roasted corn, peas and carrots. Each casserole supposedly feeds eight. I think it's a misprint. Eighteen maybe. Great prices, too! This is a great order ahead of time dish, for a special treat on a Friday night. Highly recommend!

Friends of ours surprised us with the Uncle Al Fresco's Lasagna Del Giardino to celebrate the adoption of our daughter. Not only was it super delicious but the ingredients were fresh, the directions were easy to follow, and Johnny Casserole was a real pleasure to meet. The bread from Red Hen was a definite plus and the fresh basil ;) was a nice addition! This is what real food tastes like! If you're looking for tasty casseroles to entertain with or as a nice surprise for friends, Johnny Casserole is the way to go! Double yum yum in the tum tum!

I was given the For Your Thighs Only (mac & cheese) casserole as a welcome home present after I was in the hospital. It was very easy to just bake it in the microwave and then heat up the leftovers in the microwave. The mac & cheese was perfect--creamy on the inside with a crusty cheese topping. I didn't have much of an appetite when I got home, but this is one of those things that I just kept eating after I was full because it tasted so good. And for the amount of food and the high quality you get, the price is actually quite good.

Johnny Casserole is not only efficient delicious and convenient, its just plain cool. Johnny does the work to make you look good at that family gathering, brunch, work event whatever. The food is spectacular and the service is brilliant, he comes to your house with a smile and usually makes a follow up phone call after your event to be sure everything went ok; he even will make whatever customized adjustment to your order! I have ordered several times and each time my guests are hungry for more! VIVA LA HOT DISH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This place is AMAZING. We came in for brunch and ordered the mac and cheese and the chicken pot pie. *CALL IN TO ORDER YOUR FOOD 30 MINS IN ADVANCE BECAUSE IT TAKES THAT LONG FOR THEM TO MAKE IT!!* The mac and cheese was extremely delicious! I could stop eating it! The chicken pot pie was also delicious! The biscuits were soft on the inside and crumbly on top. It was just all so good! The guys that worked there were nice too! I think they kind of have a dry sense of humor so that might come off as kinda rude to some people, but they are very nice! I would definitely come back to this place! They let you call 30-35 mins in advance to place your order, then when you come you can just sit there and wait for your food to come out. This place is a gem!

This place rocks out some AMAZING casserole. We love to pre-order a large size to pick up when we get back from being out-of-town. It gives us something to look forward to at the end of a trip, and it beats having to go to the grocery store when you are jet-lagged. Everything we've ordered has been delicious, and the staff is the friendliest.

Love this spot. Comfort food to go or dine in? Yup. Dinner and breakfast. My wife did a corporate event (small, informal gathering on a Saturday) and that was our first experience (try the French Toast Casserole...mmmm) and then recently on a rather cold and crappy day I decided to go and get some Chicken Pot Pie. Just love it. Good dude, great concept, delicious food - Get out there!

TRY their The Great Plainsman, (Shepherds Pie) it seriously lives up to its name...i had the individual 14oz serving (for a big boy like me) it was VERY filling not to mention hearty with a dynamite "stick to your bones" goodness, in translation if you leave hungry, then thats on you~!! Great, courteous & knowledgable staff that go above & beyond expectations to insure a memorable dining experience, if the food doesn't grab you then perhaps their ambience will (vintage casserole dishes, mis-matched glassware etc..) Oh, check out their map just inside the front door of all the different neighborhoods in Chicago too! You WONT be disappointed!! NOTE:It is imperative to call ahead of time (for those larger orders/family sized orders.. ) or in the meantime if you have 45 minutes or so to kill B.Y.O.B. have a drink on their back patio..Hell, have a sandwich or a salad too!!

Remember all those things like shepherd's pie that your mom used to make (that is, if you had a mom that cooked)? Do you ever wax nostalgic over tuna noodle casserole? Welcome to Johnny Casserole-- Chicago's one and only "casserole café"---slightly off-kilter versions of childhood casserole favorites. But I bet your momma didn't use fettucine and cremini mushrooms in her tuna noodle casserole. All of the casseroles have quippy names, like "For Your Thighs Only (mac and cheese)," "Tamale Lee Jones (tamale pie)," or "The Erik Estrada (breakfast strata), and come in two sizes: individual and large, which serves 6-8. The large requires 24 hour notice, but most of the individual sizes are on hand. And let me tell you, all of it is fantastic. It's good old-fashioned, stick-to-your-ribs comfort food at its best. The food is baked to order so it takes some time, but I ended up purchasing several things for take-out so I could prepare them at home at my leisure. Cooking/reheating instructions are provided. We tried the shepherd's pie, corn chowder, mac and cheese, and the blackberry buckle. I loved everything! The shepherd's pie had a rich gravy and was very filling. There's even a veggie version if you eschew meat. The mac and cheese had four different cheeses; so creamy and satisfying. I adore corn chowder and this was positively heaping with fresh corn and potatoes. The huge slab of blackberry buckle (it's more like a coffee cake) was not too sweet and had a lovely cinnamon streusel on top. They even give you little containers of fresh herbs to garnish your dishes. And they're byob. And the staff is so sweet. And there's an outdoor patio. Oh yeah, and they deliver. I never thought I'd actually crave tuna noodle casserole ever again in my life, but if my mom's was half as good as JC, I'd never have stopped eating it. Sorry, Mom.

This place is awesome! Here is how you do it: 1. Is it winter? Is it cold? Do you need vegan comfort food? 2. Go to half acre down the street & pick up beer (or cvs across the street if u have to) 3. Put 2 hrs in the meter if u drove 4. Order one of their delicious vegan casseroles 5. Sit back, slow down, drink beer, color with their crayons, relax 6. Enjoy their delicious comfort food in a warm cozy little place ...mmmmmm...dreaming of the tamale pie

Service here was a bit awkward. Nice guys though. Cute place as well. I enjoyed the cozy set up. We tried the chicken pot pie, chili, and shepherds pie. There wasn't anything comforting or tasty. Nothing hit the spot. The best was the chili. If you come, prepare carbo-load to the max. I mean it more than going to Maggiano's because there's almost no protein available in many of these dishes. If there is a dish with protein, then they probably ran out or don't have it available. I have to guess that this business is profiting mostly through catering or when people are ordering ahead for pick up only.

Time to bust out the fat pants... Thanks Johnny Casserole. (seriously, thank you - you cooked up some delicious casseroles). We dined here recently for Sunday brunch and sat in the back patio area. We had the patio all to ourselves, which felt like such a luxury. We placed our order the day before (because you have to. casseroles take time, people.), brought in a bottle of champagne (because they're byob), and sipped mimosas while we waited for our individual portions to bake. It was oh so nice. A short while later, our Eggman's Hangovers and The North Woods came out. The Eggman was a pizza strata with mushrooms, spinach, bacon and cheese, served with avocado. The North Woods was a baked french toast. Everything was piping hot and home-baked delicious. We also split a piece of fruit cobbler, The Kimmy-D. Immediately after we got back home, I fell into a food coma-nap. That means the food was good and I had a happy tum tum. Johnny C. is such a clever restaurant concept and the staff was very nice and friendly. The pre-ordering process could be a deterrent for passers-by who just happen to be walking around and decide they'd like a bite to eat in the form of a beautiful casserole, but there are some menu items that can be ordered on the spot, like soups, salads, sandwiches, etc. See you again, we will be back!

This place was superb. Every time I commute to work via bike, I pass by this place. I decided to go inside with my best friend who is gluten intolerant. This place had specially made casseroles, both of which we had the gluten free option. It took forty five minutes to bake but it was a relaxed atmosphere and the people there really nice. I ordered the jiamblya and she had the tamales Lee Jones. Both were excellent and really met our expectations. Thus far, I would recommend this place for people to relax and have a good casserole. It only came out to 20 for the meal

So, funny thing. I've eaten there once--delicious!--and tried to eat there several times since then unsuccessfully. Here's the thing: I'm a vegetarian, and I've tried multiple times to order things for delivery or takeout that look awesome, only to be told, "could you order that at least a day in advance?" On their website, it now says that veggie options should be ordered at least a day ahead. And while I'm sure it's delicious, ordering my dinner (an act of convenience, or rain avoidance, or whatever) a day in advance is just not going to happen. Soooo, delicious, but I'll probably never eat there again :-(

Cute place! I have been driving by this place for a while and finally checked it out! The staff member was super helpful in helping us navigate how to order. He did mention that it would take 45 minutes since the food was homemade, which we were totally ok with. JC is BYOB so bring some beer and have a good night! I tried the mac and cheese and it was delicious. It is also served with a homemade role which were crispy on the outside and soft and chewy on the inside! Will definitely go here again!

Grew up in Michigan with parents from Minnesota. So every meal that was baked in a 9x13 pan was called "hotdish" in my house. Wasn't until much, much later that I learned of my regional colloquialism. Needless to say, I love me some hotdish! I wasn't sure how the place worked. Do I call an order in ahead of time? Do they only do take-outs before 4? Can I get mini-hotdishes to go? Do they have enough seats inside or will it be standing room only for the salivating mid-westerners? Answers: I called around 5pm to order some mini-dishes to pick up hot at 6:30. We did take out because my friends and I didn't want to be shut-out of sitting immediately since we were all getting ravenous. When I walked in I realized that we could've easily had a place to sit since only one table taken that Thursday evening. Still, there aren't a lot of tables, so beware! We also could've called in to have our hot hotdishes waiting for us as we came in to sit. Brilliant! Instead, you'll have to wait patiently for them to bake the 45min or so. But they have books and games, and if you byob the time will fly by! The staff was so nice, the interior very cute and comfortable what with the kitschy casserole pans from decades past and the 30's/40's music playing on the radio. But lets get down to the main attraction. Big Grabowski? DELISH! Pot pie? SUBLIME! Jambalaya? JAMAKINGMECRAZY! Mac & cheese? I DIED! I'm not kidding, we just sat there with out little take out pans making a symphony of mmmms and ooooohhhhhs while we stuffed ourselves. I can't wait to try the rest of their dishes. Uff da!!

I'm a mac and cheese aficionado. Hands down THE BEST mac and cheese in the city. Hands down.

First off, the service was impeccable. The fellow who answered the phone, whom I think was the same to fill my order and ring me up when I arrived (could he be the eponymous Mr. Casserole?), was very nice. He honored a coupon I didn't actually have on me (though to be fair, the coupon just said to mention Gamestop, nothing about needing to bring it with me). Anyway, what follows is a review of the food I got: For Your Thighs Only: this is their name for mac & cheese. It was creamy, cheesy, quite good. Some restaurant mac is bland, which is a cardinal sin. I mean, all you gotta nail is the cheese part of mac and cheese (the mac is a gimme), but some places cock it up regardless. Not this one. Couldn't be simpler, but they nailed the tangy, cheesy goodness. The Great Plainsman: aka shepherd's pie. Technically it's a cottage pie, since it's made with ground beef, not lamb. No complaints about the quality of ingredients, but the sauce was a miss for me. Should be more like a brown gravy, but it tasted like red wine and ketchup. I'd much prefer a bottle of ale or stout as a base for the sauce. Much more suitable for English peasant food. The Beth Ann: chicken pot pie. It might just be me, but when I make a chicken pot pie, I actually make a double pie crust, and inside is the filling. Johnny Casserole's version didn't involve pie crust at all, but had biscuits on top. Not a significant difference between biscuit dough and pie crust I suppose. And the biscuits were yummy, I'll give them that. The chicken and vegetables with sauce beneath were good as well. Overall, a very tasty dish. In conclusion, I'd probably go back.to try some other things, and maybe get the mac & cheese or Beth Ann again. High marks for effort. Good, friendly service is enough to help gloss over some minor flaws in the food.

Food is delicious. Also great for catering or bringing to a friend's house, etc. Mac and cheese and pot pie were both great. Check it out!

We finally got around to trying this place over the weekend. All I gotta say is WOW! First off, the service is amazing. I just had take out, but when I got there at least 3 different people came out of the back just to say hello. Dave, who took my order, came out just to say hi and put a name to the face. The chef then came out and asked if it was ok to put chives on our mac n cheese. The food was even better than the service. We had the chicken pot pie and mac n cheese, both some of the best if not the best we've ever had. Can't wait to go back and try more of the casseroles!

Compelled to write a review of this spot - my first on Yelp - after years of benefiting from the site and not returning the favor. Sorry dudes! Anyway, we had a bday dinner for 11 here this past weekend and couldn't have been happier with the experience. We made the reservation earlier in the week, which I'd suggest as it only has space for 16 (the outdoor area has more for the never-arriving warmth), and ordered two casseroles in advance - the For Your Thighs Only and Hoppin' Johnny - presciently suggested as companion dishes by the owner. Both were great and we added on 3 large salads (House, Caesar, Spinach), and there was plenty of food for the group, with generous leftovers. While I'd recommend ordering a casserole or two in advance for a large group, we also tried an individual serving of the tuna, as well as a biscuit. All were on point and after tip, we were at only about $14 per person. Toss in some free bday cake, great service and generous accommodation to us BYOBers, we couldn't have asked for more. Great in concept and execution, I'm sure we'll be back many times down the line and have already hyped it up to friends.

Comfort Awesomeness!!! Great food and great guys. We stop in here twice a month with our son Mac for the Mac n Cheese. It's called "For Your Thighs Only". Nuff said. Make sure to ask for chives with your Mac n cheese...also comes with big loaf of bread.

AMAZING!!!! Yes it takes 45 minutes for your casserole/hot dish to bake. However, between the bluesy rock n roll and games, you will not be bored! Plus they encourage you to order in advance and they deliver. And BYOB is great to pass by those ticking moment before the deliciousness arrives. Salads were fantastic! Everything is made to order and they guys who run the place couldn't be cooler! If you are looking for some amazing home food. Stop here, actually call them, order ahead and show up, you won't regret it!

This place is FANTASTIC. All their food is made from scratch by the owner, David. I've had 5 or 6 casseroles with the Shepherds Pie and Lasagna being my favorite. We've had their breakfast as well, the North Woods and Egg Strata. The egg dish is so ridiculously good you must try it yourself. Please support this place!! It's a great addition to the NorthCenter 'hood. They have a nice outdoor patio out back, they play good music inside and their service is personal. Be forewarned that the casseroles take about 45-50 mins to cook, so it's not exactly the fastest place in the world, but that's what makes this place so great. Slow down, BYOB, and enjoy a night with your s/o or some close friends. While you're waiting, order a couple biscuits with honey and jam on the side. Trust me.

Came here about a month or two ago so I will recall the best I can. I bought the mac n' cheese and the chicken pot pie. There was a wait for some reason (but I forget why...I didn't mind since I was anticipating trying their food for the first time and after reading reviews) the guy said I could pop them both in the oven and it should be good to go. I have to tell you I followed his instructions for both when I got to my place and they were both delicious. In hindsight, I thought the individual sizes were rather small and the family size would have been a better portion for one in my opinion as I could eat it all in one sitting. (I bought individual sizes for both) Hey, it's comfort food, BRING IT! Two gripes: 1)individual size prices: need to be slashed down since the portions aren't up to par for my stomach... 2) corn in chicken pot pie: NOT a big corn fan and this was in the chicken pot pie...I probed them all out of the pie. The guy who took my order was informative, accommodating and encouraged me to ask any questions. Savory food and customer service on point here; Individual portions need to fill out more...add a muffin top or two on the sides?!

The first time I went to Johnny Casserole was almost a year ago for my birthday dinner. I have to say, Dave and Timothy display such welcoming and impressive hospitalitiy; in addition to their heavenly delicious dishes. My partner and I keep coming back. I will admit, that I should have utilized the back patio a bit more this summer but we have a couple of weeks left before it gets cold. J.C's is NOT just seasonal comfort food. They actually have a delectable veggie lasagna (called the Uncle Al Fresco) and the tamale pie (a.k.a. Tamale Lee Jones). And for you picky eaters, since they have vegan, gluten free, and vegetarian options there is no reason you shouldn't go and check them out! Recommendation: Call ahead of time to make sure J.C's has enough casseroles for those picky eaters because they go fast! The salads are amazing and they are big enough to share. Whether it is 90 degrees or 20 degrees outside, these savvy gentlemen know just how to fill your bellies. Oh, the best part! J.C's is B.Y.O.B! They also use the freshest ingredients. So if you are struggling to find a place that will accommodate all the picky eaters in the family or what to pick up on the way home, this is your place. They even have huge family sized casseroles. Personally, I have never order take-out because Dave and Timothy are so friendly and courteous, what's the point. My partner and I prefer their company. Keep up the great work guys and thanks for staying innovative, eccentric, and extraodinarily delightful.

Update: I finally got the chance to go back to Johnny Casserole and it lived up to every great memory. Still delicious food, great customer service, funky atmosphere, and a fun time while you wait for your food. Side note, their biscuits are a delicious way to tide yourself over while waiting for the casseroles to come.

I hate to be that ONE person that writes a bad review while everyone else is raving, but here goes. Yep, I'm that bitch. First, delivery took over an hour. Ok, so we ordered on a chilly fall Friday night - I'll cut them a break there. I'm sure everyone was in the mood for a warm hearty casserole tonight. Next up, the credit card app didn't work when they showed up at our door and the guy didn't have change. Lucky him, he got an extra big tip. Then comes the food. We ordered soup and two single size portions of casserole - one chicken pot pie and one shepherd's. Oddly, the portion of soup was bigger than the casserole. Shouldn't the main course be the larger of the two? Still, I was trying really hard to be optimistic about things. The soup I ordered was mushroom tarragon - sounds delicious! But it was a really weird texture. They blended it all up, so it wasn't chunky, but it wasn't completely smooth either (imagine watery brown cream of wheat ?) and it was an unappetizing greenish brown color. The flavor was ok, but overall, not what I had hoped for. There was still hope for the main course though, right? So, when I think casserole, I think huge portion that you can't possibly finish. And I imagine myself feeling warm and satisfied afterward. Unfortunately, I ate the whole thing and still felt hungry. Maybe I should have eaten more today? Maybe I should have skipped that nice fall run I took earlier and not been so hungry for dinner? Maybe this is all on me? Bottom line, I honestly feel like I could have gone to the freezer section in the grocery store, picked something up for less money and would have ended up with a meal that tasted the same but left me more satisfied. Sorry guys, I guess I fail to see the appeal here.

Great Food, But... I was excited about going to this restaurant and when we walked in, we were the only people in the place. About 10 minutes later other people filled out the restaurant.. Now, the staff warns you that it takes 45 min to cook your food, so we ordered soup and salad. When we did not get these within 15 minutes and others who came after us started to get appetizers, I became upset by the wait. I kept asking where these were. When we finally got our appetizers after a 30 minute wait, someone came out of the kitchen to explain the wait and said "You know, you don't have to eat anything". I felt he was inviting me to leave. I bit my lip and stayed not to embarrass my wife (and we had a show to get to in an hour). It's too bad. The food was fantastic, but the service was disrespectful to this customer.

I received the Beth Ann as a condolence gift tonight. I have not been cooking much and this was a Godsend! My husband loved it. There was so much chicken and the veggies were perfect; not mushy but just the right texture. The biscuits even had a buttermilk cup that I brushed on before I cooked it. Heavenly is all I can say. Johnny casserole was my delivery man as well- and he took the utmost care in explaining to me what I needed to do. I am very impressed! I will definitely be going to the restaurant and will also use them the next time I need to send a gift to someone.

So Delish! Cute place, friendly service. We ordered chicken pot pie and mac and cheese. They bake the casseroles fresh so it takes 45 min, BUT you can call in and order in advance and they will start them for you. And, if you call a day in advance, they have a more extensive list of items they will make for you! We decided to try the soup of the day while we waited - tomato with fresh basil shreds on top - so good! We also had an amazing home made biscuit - which has huge. BTW - if you dont want to wait for the casserole baking, they also have sandwiches and salads. I cant wait to come back, or to stop by and pick up to bake at home.

Complimentary tootsie rolls and vintage Pyrex. I was sold the second I walked in. I live two blocks from Johnny Casserole and have walked/driven past their storefront several times/week since their opening, always thinking to myself "I need to stop in there." Well. It finally happened. I spent the majority of my commute home texting back and forth with my boyfriend determining what we should eat for dinner. Take out? Eh. Nothing sounded good? Cook something at home? Eh. We'd have to go to the store or split a two year old Lean Cuisine. In the end I decided I would walk to Jewel and just wander around aimlessly until something tickled my fancy. That was until I reached the corner of Irving Park and Damen and remembered Johnny C. My initial plan was to just grab a take out menu to peruse, since we had both decided we wanted to eat "healthy" and let's get serious, casseroles are anything but. Note: I put healthy in quotes whenever I'm using the term loosely - meaning, anything with vegetables in it could fit the bill - even if they were covered in butter. Upon walking in I noticed immediately all the cute vintage Pyrex casserole dishes and mixing bowls which took me back to Defiance, OH - five years old watching my grandma preparing Thanksgiving dinner...a warm feeling washed over me. Then I saw the basket of tootsie rolls. Heaven. If it were a basket of Sixlets I would have fallen over. I didn't ask his name, but the young chap behind the counter was really enthusiastic and told me all about how things work - you can order casseroles ahead of time (hot or cold) and could also buy them there hot or cold. They also have soup, sandwiches and salads which is nice for switching it up. All casseroles come in small and large sizes. I'm already considering Johnny Casserole for my next gathering of friends for dinner or perhaps a Super Bowl party next year. Let them do the work....I'll just preheat my oven thank you very much. Also important to note - they are BYOB. Could be a great dinner option for a group with the right preparation. As for what I ate - I ordered two veggie chilis to keep with the healthy theme my boyfriend and I had discussed over text. They were super hearty and filling. And because I couldn't leave without a casserole, I ordered their small jambalaya at the suggestion of a gentleman I assumed to be the owner. He did not steer me wrong - it was AMAZING. Other options on the menu - the staples: Shepherd's Pie, Mac and Cheese (create your own style as well), Chicken Pot Pie, Tuna Casserole, Biscuits....Just think of your grandma's best recipes - they're there. I'm just sorry I waited so long to try this place. I will definitely be back - and soon!

The quality of the food is outstanding. Everything was delicious and homemade. However I thought the portion size was a little small for the price. Either lower the price, increase the portion size, or throw in a salad or soup or something. We had 4 people for dinner and ordered 6 individual servings so we could all have a little taste of everything. Little did we know we would each get a BITE of the extra servings. I was really sort of shocked when the food arrived and I thought "this is it?" We scraped our plates clean and there were no leftovers. Ordering hours ahead of time seemed like kind of a waste since they did not even put our food in the oven until we got there and we waited almost an hour to eat. We had called multiple times in the morning putting in our order and planning what time we would like to be served after we arrived. I think this place would be great for a date where you don't want to eat too much and you want a quiet place to talk for hours. This place is NOT good for a group of very hungry people that want large amounts of food and want it quickly!

This small, quaint place is just another jewel to have in North Center. This restaurant does the best comfort food I've ever tasted and there has got to be some love in it. The staff and ambiance is like you are eating food made by your family. We had the Shepherd's Pie, Chicken Pop Pie and the Mac-n-Cheese. The Shepherd's Pie was amazing but the Mac-n-Cheese rivaled my own. The place is small so call ahead and they have piping hot comfort food ready when you get there. Now that I know they have delivery and do carry out during lunch, it will be one of my favorite spots.

I don't know if we'd ever actually eat in because of the length of cooking time but take out and cooking it at home is fabulous. This was our first visit and we were the only ones there so we got a lot of attention and could ask a lot of questions. Everyone was so nice and helpful. We had the mac and cheese with andouille and the tuna casserole. Would have both again and we are looking forward to having casseroles and trying a number of the other options on a regular basis. I'm not sure why I thought they were located so much further south (closer to Fullerton) but I'm really happy that they are only about a mile from home.

I love this place, and I hope nobody finds out about it because I wants it all to meself, but I also want it to stay in business, and I am spindly and can't possibly consume enough to keep it afloat, so everybody please eat these delicious casseroles but save enough for meself The Beth Ann is amazing

I guess mark neighborhood casserole shop as one of those things you didn't know you needed till you got one. Fresh, delicious, friendly, inventive, and just all around with it. Had the biscuits and gravy then took home a kielbasa casserole and both were as close to home cooking as I've found yet in this city. I'll give this place 10 glasses of water. Cannot recommend it enough.

Tried the Mac N Cheese (For you thighs only :) and the Chicken Pot Pie (The Beth Ann) at a friend's dinner party - they were both delicious! I will be ordering some for my next dinner party, I think my friends will love it also!!

What can I say? This place is where stomachs go to snuggle on a swing on the back porch in the cool Georgian breeze. Casserole at its freshest and best! I had the Mac and cheese and my date had the grabowski! Both fresh and delicious! One of the best Mac n cheeses I've had! We started with the mushroom and tarragon soup which is a must for mushroom lovers. And the peach cobbler was simple and the fresh peaches made all the difference. 5 stars all the way!

People want to talk about fall being pumpkin season but I say fall is most definitely CASSEROLE season. I've been to Johnny Casserole three times so far and each time has been the same level of satisfying, hearty, comfort taste. I'm a vegetarian and I've only ever ordered takeout, that said, I give high praise to the rich veggie pot pie and vegan Hoppin' Johnny. The biscuits are a revelation. Bring on the brutal winter, Chicago. I've got Johnny Casserole to keep me warm.

Best shepherd's pie I have ever had. Period. Picked up the party size for a work potluck. Devoured. I stole the last quarter to take home and eat all by myself. Staff is super friendly. Place is very welcoming. Love that it is BYOB. Gonna take my friends here to try out the rest of the menu. Glad they moved into the neighborhood!

I can't say enough great things about Johnny Casserole. We had an impromptu mini wedding reception for 7 on Saturday night. The team here accommodated us at very short notice, and let us bring in cake, decorations and drinks. We had the Caesar, the spinach salad, and the kale salad, and they were amazing. I'm still craving that delicious kale salad today. For casseroles, we had the great plainsman(shepherd's pie), the beth ann(chicken pot pie), uncle al frescos(vegetarian lasagna), for your thighs only(mac & cheese), and fresh dinner rolls. All of the casseroles were delicious, out of this world. A few points to note, there is limited seating, I believe the max is 16. The casseroles are oven fresh and take a little time, don't be in a rush. If you want to order a full size pan of anything, give 24hrs notice. Most importantly, it is BYOB. Thanks to the team for an amazing and memorable experience. Amazing Food, Amazing People. Go there ASAP.

Just got back from a 2 year old's party. Man, does that kid have smart parents. Adults had the lasagne and the kids had the mac and cheese. The vegetables in the lasagne were so fresh. Each layer had the right amount of everything. What a delicate blend of incredible flavors. Also...I may have eaten half of my sons mac and cheese. Delicious! My buddy didn't have to spend a lot to feed 10 people and the quality of the dishes were amazing. Do yourself a favor and order up some Johnny Casserole. You will not be disappointed.

Food is good.. so if that's all you're looking for then great place. Went on a Saturday to find they were closed just that day for a catering event. We understood and asked if we could come Sunday and they said definitely, you can even call when you're on your way and order so you won't wait as long. So Sunday, my birthday, we came back. Drove from the suburbs and called when we were about a half hour away and got the rudest man answer the phone. Before I could finish my first sentence, after I mentioned we were on our way, he interrupted me and told me they were totally full. I said o ok I wanted to order but that's fine we will come and just wait..but he made it seem like he didn't want us showing up at all. He explained how it'd be at least an hour before we got seated let alone another hour until we got served. I was going to be fine with that but he gave off such a rude vibe I didn't want to deal with that on my birthday. My husband called back 3 minutes later and tried to order and said they had a table available for us and saved us a spot and casseroles!! I couldn't believe that within 3 minutes everything opened up. We were shocked that we still went and ate. Everything was delicious. Found out the owner was the second man we spoke to on the phone, so he handled it well, however he was very cocky. When I brought up my frustration from my phone call, he said "Well you're here aren't you?" Sounds like he was doing me a favor...And I hate to be like this but I've worked as a manager in business/sales for years and businesses are lucky to have a customers,, not the other way around. The young man though that greeted us at the door both days and served us was very kind and remembered us and also remembered that I mentioned on Saturday it was my birthday, so keep up the good work. You never know where customers are coming from and what kind of a day it is for them so instead of backing up an employee just apologize I just wanted him to be aware of how someone else answers the phone.. That's all that would've made me a little happier while I was eating the casserole, otherwise, I just felt unwelcomed the whole time and awkward. Won't return or recommend.

I should have written this sooner. Had guests coming in from out of town and wanted something delicious and easy for the first night. Had the wonderful JC Chicken Pot Pie. Pre-ordered it and it was ready for pick-up. Chatted with the guys while waiting for the final bit of browning and found them to be really nice. The pot pie was fantastic and lasted all weekend! Next, I'll be trying their lasagne. I agree with the other posts. Support these guys!

We went here last night for my birthday dinner. We all ordered something different, so I was able to sample a lot of different dishes. They were all tremendous. I ordered the jambalaya, and it was perfectly spicy. The staff Is friendly, the atmosphere is mellow, and the food is great. Since the casseroles are all freshly cooked, it takes a while, but they let you call ahead if you are shorter on time. But if you do have time, it's BYO, and it's a great place to enjoy your friends' company. They also cater, carry out and deliver. I will be taking advantage of this comfort food during the colder months. If tl;dr, 5 stars, everything's tasty.

I was in town from NYC and I absolutely had to check this place out. I'm originally from the Midwest and will admit I miss the casserole comfort food of my youth. Johnny Casserole did not disappoint. I went with a small group and we all got slightly different dishes. The Blazing Saddles was AMAZING! Spicy but just the right level of spice, and overall delicious. My friends had the tuna noodle, and the mac and cheese special with Andouille sausage and they loved it! The space is small and intimate but extremely homey and immaculate. Call ahead if you want a family sized casserole but they had plenty of individual ones on hand. The salads were also divine. I HIGHLY recommend this place, and I hope it's around for years to come. The service was also excellent. I'm sad they don't have one in NYC!

The best comfort food there is! The chicken pot pie is amaaaaaazing, as is the shepherds pie! It does take awhile to make (as most casseroles do) so make sure you order 45 min before you're ready to eat... But trust me, it's worth the wait! :-)

What a great addition to the North Center neighborhood. I have walked by a few times but had never stopped in until last night when I was coming home late and not wanting to cook. I popped in and was delighted to see they had some individual size lasagnas ready for purchase. They packed them up nicely and I had them on the table 15 minutes later. The Lasagna was phenomenal as was the roll that came with it. I am now salivating over their menu thinking about what to get on my next visit. If you have walked by without stopping by like I have, do yourself a favor and stop in. You will not be disappointed.

I tried to send an email on the website but there was an error. As embarrassing as it is, I'm posting it here in hopes that the person who took my call sees it. I promise I will update and write an actual helpful review as soon as possible. Dear David, My name is Sage and I tried to place an order with you when I seemingly hung up. I just wanted to let you know that that was not the case. I had to borrow my friends phone because mine was stolen. Her phone died on me and I don't have a compatible charger. Anyway, I just wanted to thank you for not only your willingness to take separate orders, but for taking our orders even though it was 9:16 when I called and you guys close at 10. I've ordered from you before and I'm hooked. I can't wait to try that Shepherd's Pie. You guys are doing it right! Peace and Love, Sage

Saw this JC featured on Chicago's Best and all they had to say was biscuit and pot pie and we were hooked. Couldn't remember the name but after some savvy Yelp searching we soused the place out. This was a vacation day planned destination end of a thirty day cleanse blow out: so stakes were high! Staff was warm and attentive. Place was cozy and inviting ( it's BYOB!) . Based on availability I had the Mac & cheese and based on Brittany Payton and memories of mom 's cooking he had the chicken pot pie (topped with homemade biscuits!) I had a side of biscuit and we both partook in cups of bean/kale/kielbasa soup...so worth the 45 min wait. Everything made from scratch, fresh and flavorful. The biscuits (my favorite food!) we're thick but not too dense. Mac was crusty yet gooey inside, the soup was hearty and balanced. You can call ahead to confirm your preferred dish is available or have it set aside. You can take to go hot or to heat at home. Loved that a couple who had obviously called ahead ( and got the last of the Jambalaya) got handshakes and a "hey man I talked to you on the phone" greetings. Support this place!

So good. This review is purely for take out that was ordered 45 minutes prior to pickup (the requisite cooking time for Mr. Casserole). Everything is rock solid but to me the best I've had are the chicken pot pie, tamale, and mac and cheese. The mac and cheese brings something extra with a delicate cream sauce with hints of many unique and different flavors. The biscuits on the pot pie really bring it together and the tamale is creamy polenta with beef flavor filled goodness. Shepherd's pie is also excellent...if you're listening Mr. Casserole a tad more meat would bring it to the next level. Tuna casserole isn't my favorite thing in the world to begin with so its tough for me to review, but this one was pretty darned good. Ask for the biscuits, they are great to mop up with. All in all for a dinner to go, this unique spot is at the the top of my list.

Delicious BYOB with passionate, friendly and well-seasoned chefs! The love and flavor that goes into each dish reminds you of family recipes. We had a fantastic girl's night! We tried and shared several options. Great, affordable food. Love, love, love! The BEST! *They also do delivery, and take out! You can order a whole casserole or a single serving. Don't forget weekend breakfast casseroles, too! Yum.

Went in for a casserole, but alas you must call ahead because these are actually cooked to order (45 minutes). However, the tuna salad with side salad was excellent! Also, had the tomato soup which was equally satisfying. Even the lemonade was different with the touch of lavender. Garden out back was very pleasant as was the interior. Everyone there was extremely friendly and looking to make our experience as perfect as possible. Will be back and will phone ahead for a casserole.

Tired of the ubiquitous burger joints and sushi restaurants? Want to feel like you are in someone's home sitting down to a home-cooked made to order meal? Enjoy the groovy sounds of 1960's Motown? Like Tootsie Rolls? If you said yes to any or all of the above, Johnny Casserole is for you. I was lured here by yelp reviews because I was in the 'hood and wanted to try something new. and the food just sounded way too tempting to pass up. So glad I went. The decor is warm and inviting, lots of vintage cookware, brick walls, wood tables, lots and lots of plants and fresh flowers. The staff is equally warm and inviting, and willing to patiently wait while you mull over the menu and change your mind again and again because everything sounds good. One note - don't come here if you are in a hurry, because everything is, literally, made to order, FRESH, and takes about 45 minutes to prepare. As one staff person put it, "The casseroles lose their 'essence' if they sit around too long." But it is definitely worth the wait. If you are starving, you can munch on the aforementioned Tootsie Rolls. You can also order a cup of soup or chili or a salad. We let ourselves be tempted by the Popeye and Olive Oyl salad, yum, and the corn chowder, double yum. For our main dishes, we had the Beth Ann (chicken pot pie with biscuits) and the Shepherd's pie. Delicious, fresh, and I really felt like someone's grandma was in the back cooking things up. Perfect portion sizes for me, and I have a fairly healthy appetite. I left feeling content, not stuffed. There is a pretty outside patio for when (if ever) it warms up, until then, this is the perfect place for cold weather comfort food, so run, don't walk to Johnny Casserole! (not his real name, btw!)

Our new favorite place. Went in with my boyfriend last weekend. The two guys there were a)awesome and b)up-front about the wait we could expect (they bake the casseroles fresh, even if you want an individual size). The food? UNGH. So. Good. We will be back. A lot. Sorry, waistline. You never stood a chance.

Best Jambalaya I have had in Chicago. Crawfish Mac n Cheese special was solid. Super easy to toss in the oven and home and enjoy encredible food. This is your go to spot for impressing party guests. Excited to try a casserole next time!

Quaint little place where you can read a paper or play a game of cards while you eagerly wait for a delicious, fresh made creation from Johnny! My husband had a savory chicken pot pie, while I had a spicy jambalaya. Really worth the wait! Great music too- relaxing ambiance.

My friends hosted my recent baby shower here, and it was an amazing spot. The casseroles (shepherd's pie, mac n' cheese and chicken pot pie) were amazing and the spinach and pear salad was really fresh and tasty. Oh, and the coffee cake for dessert was delish. People raved about the food and the atmosphere was just awesome for the event. The owner let my friends decorate the place with tons of baby-related gear, flowers, etc., and it was really a special day. I'll be heading here for easy casserole takeout once the baby arrives!!

We have been wanting to go to JC since we moved in the hood and it's never quite worked out.....until now. And we are sooooo happy we finally made it! First of all, the service. Really friendly group of guys that just took care of us thru each step of our experience. Because the casseroles take awhile, which they tell u up front, we were able to order, then head to local wine shoppe to get a bottle of cava for our mimosas. Loooove us some byob! Secondly, the food. Oh good Lord. We split a biscuit while waiting on our entrées....I can't even tell you how delicious it was. I mean, it was a BISCUIT. If the biscuit was that good......dayyyyyum! I was hoping the biscuit wasn't the highlight of the experience. Wellllllll let me tell you, JC did not disappoint! I had the Mac and cheese, and y'all know I'm all about the m&c! It was delightful...like southern, real, authentic. The hubs got the Hangover something or other. Awwww man was it delicious. You might think, "who eats casserole in the summer?" Well, let me challenge you to go anytime of year. You will NOT be disappointed!
