This is cooked to order chicken, so expect a good wait. It's worth it! Fries are unbelievable. I don't even feel guilty after I eat them because they're so amazing. We usually get the double breast. So. much. meat. The only thing I knew previous to Harolds was KFC, and I feel like this place is a life changer. Hot and mild sauce are tasty. I even love the white bread it comes with. I will say, I live a close walking distance to this Harolds, so I get it home and eat it within just a few minutes, which makes it all the better. Will be ordering and eating Harold's often.

This place is the worst. They over charge for bullshit. Nothing was good about it. I seriously prefer popeyes. also, the people that work there looked like they were about to die.

Dude! It's fried chicken, dude! And fried okra. And fried pizza bites. And fried potatoes they like to call fries. Dude!! Oh wait, everything on the menu is fried. Everything's fried to order (although don't think that means they're custom-frying it, just waiting on you to ask for it to drop it in the hot heart attack juice), and takes 15-20 minutes. Their fried stuff is tasty, the waiting area is awkward, no tickets or receipts so you pay and hope they remember your face, and I was denied mashed potatoes or mac & cheese to offset the deep-fry (Deep Fried is King!). But dude, that chicken was goooood!

I appreciate that this place is located in the north side, whereas more of these chkcen shacks are on the souithside too far for me to get to. This place just reeks of homemade fried chicken. It's mostly just a take out place although there are a few stools. Ooh this place has no A/C on a hot summer day so be prepared to sweat it out. It's part of the drill to wait inside as your order comes up. I don't think anyone is coming outside to get you - so you'll have to go back in to check. My boyfriend had a craving for fried chicken and I was kind enough to indulge him. We got the 8 piece with wonder bread, fried okra, cole slaw, fries, and hot sauce. Oh it was so good! The skin was nice and crispy and the meat juicy. The prices and staff there are all right, too.

I won't beat around the bush. The white bread is always smashed. The fries are never crispy. The mild sauce is too sweet. And none of this matters because you come for the chicken. And the chicken is the truth.

Harold's really seems to do what it can to NOT have customers; posted sign saying "20 minutes or more" and answering the phone saying "harold's chick, you have to come in to places an order" click. Chicken lovers do not be fooled. Stay and order. They will get your order wrong, they always do. When you get home to open your mystery meal, your first thought is to be angry about some missing item, but then you sink your teeth in and suddenly, you're not angry anymore. Not even a little. Always juicy and surprisingly not greasy.

Best fried chicken I've ever tasted in my life. (SORRY MOM!) Always fresh, hot and crispy. The sauce is the bomb. One time they forgot to send my bbq sauce and my meal was just not the same. You gotta have that sauce!

Fantastic fried chicken, the way it should be served: fried to order (25 minute wait), doused in fantastic hot sauce and served with fries, slaw and a slice of white bread. The chicken is hot and juicy, the skin brown and crispy, and the hot sauce is perfect. Harold's in infamous for it's horrible attitude and service, so don't expect a friendly visit. I wouldn't expect to eat here either, the space is very small, but there are a few counters. I also discourage phone, online and delivery orders. You have to go to the place in person, don't smile, order, wait, and enjoy. (It's quite cheap too.) I would give 5 stars but I did not have a good first experiences with the fries. I got my order to-go, and they doused both the chicken and fries in hot sauce, so that by the time I got home, the fries were very soggy. I'd recommend getting the cause on the side for this reason, unless you like soggy fries.

I have walked by here for the last couple of years and never gone in because I never thought a Harold's not on the south side would be any good. Surprise surprise! That was some good stuff. Actually some of the best Harold's I had in quite some time. I decided to stop over a little bit before the Salud Tequila Event. I was starving and in the mood for some chicken with mild sauce. I ordered a six piece mild. The guy behind the register asked me if I wanted the sauce on the chicken or on the side. I gave him a funny look and said on it. He already knew why i looked at him like that. He said, "I know on the south side there are no questions asked and you get it automatically on the chicken, but on the north side, they are particular." This happens to be one of the cleanest Harold's I have ever been inside of. Very spacious and they are fast. Walked home after I got the goods and ravaged it like never before. Mmmm good!

is there something wrong with me? This chicken is rancid. I've tried it multiple times and it is just disgusting. I cannot fathom why everyone loves it. It tastes like cleaning fluid.

Just get the wings! It's all that's needed! Their wings are simply great! The wings come out pipping hot and it's like heaven in your mouth. The best fried chicken I've had. I came here my first time when I came to Chicago and didn't think too much of it. The wings were good. They tasted healthier than other wings I've had. It wasn't too heavy. The second time I came, I absolutely fell in love! Hot sauce + wings. Get ready for yummy in your tummy!

Pretty bad, dry, smelly chicken. Was very surprised at how bad it was. Bad French fries too, soggy and undercooked or something.

freaking bomb. so simple. CHEAP. so amazing. so ghetto. perfectly fried chicken. good fries. HOT SAUCE. this meal honestly had me on a high for days and i would have gone back twice more if i could have during my short weekend trip. one of the best (if not the best) chicken experiences i've ever had. 1/4 white chicken breast and wing, so crispy and juicy i've never picked apart a piece of meat like i did here.

I placed an order via Grub Hub so I didn't have any interaction with the staff except the delivery driver, who also happens to be a functioning idiot. I know that seems a bit harsh but the guy went to the wrong address, which happened to be a closed bank, then calls to ask if I'm inside. He then shuts up just long enough for me to give him directions to my place. When he gets to my building he "can't find a place to park" and makes me come out to get my food. I'm sorry but with a $4.00 delivery charge and $3.00 tip I think you can put a nickel in a parking meter. On to the food itself, which wasn't bad but I expected better after seeing all the people talking this place up. I've heard rumors that some Harold's Chicken Shacks are better than others and I sincerely hope this is one of the others. I ordered a Ordered on a 1/2 dark chicken dinner and a side of okra. The 1/2 dark chicken dinner came with fries and two pieces of white bread. The fries were soggy and cold, which I found odd since the chicken was still warm. Evidently the chicken is made to order but the fries are not. Speaking of the chicken, I'm not sure how the chicken was cooked (pressure cooked, fried, or reheated in an oven) but three of the four pieces had no crunch to them, which leads me to believe that this is baked fried chicken (I could be wrong but if I am things are much worse than I suspect because fried chicken that comes out like baked fried chicken es no bueno). On a positive note, the chicken was tasty if not a bit bland for my taste; good thing a side of hot sauce was included. Now on to the okra; there's a special place in hell for people trying to pass off what I was served as fried okra. There was no crunch, no crispness and no flavor. Again, I could be wrong but the okra comes off as fake-n-bake not fried and that is no good especially if it is actually fried. All in all this wasn't the worst fried chicken I've ever had but I feel sorry for the people who say this is the best fried chicken they've ever had.

Maybe im missing something? Many people told me that this was the go to spot for fried chicken in Chicago. This was blah. Never mind the 20 minute wait, yeah I understand that it's cooked to order but it doesn't take 20 min to fry 2 pieces of chicken at a fast food joint. After waiting that long I was expecting it to be exceptional, WRONG! The fries lacked salt, and the chicken had too much salt and the taste of black pepper was way too strong. Popeyes has better chicken than this place, don't waste your money or time here.

Just ordered from here for the first time on GrubHub for delivery. Even with delivery, the chicken was still crispy. The breading was very good and the chicken was juicy and tender. Got a few sides (Mac and cheese, coleslaw, mashed potatoes) that were all good and reasonably priced. Just wish the potatoes came with gravy. Would definitely order from here again.

Chicken has Nice crispy outside and tender juicy inside. Taste nice and fresh. My only critique would be that it lacks seasoning in comparison to say Popeyes. Service was Excellent BTW.

Got a hankerin for some fried chicken tonight. I would walk past this place all the time, cuz it did look a bit shady. But damn, they make some good chicken. I got a 1/4 white. The fries were very good I thought. The chicken was moist. The seasoning on the breading isn't anything to call home about, but still tasty enough. They lay it on top of white bread which sops up the grease so it ends up tasting really good. They had the football game on which was nice. There is a bit of a wait but worth it cuz the chicken is fresh and burn your tongue hot. It really hit the spot. I wasn't a fan of the mild sauce, it was too ketchupy for me. I'll get hot next time.

Got grease? When a hangover is kickin strong, and your day is pretty shitty otherwise, let Harold's be your bright spot on the horizon. Walk in, order an 8-piece mix, hang out for 10 minutes while they lovingly prep and make your chicken, take home and enjoy. I am intrigued by the other menu items they had.. you can order a fried fish and chicken combo, you can order chicken livers, other gizzards, etc. I'm definitely interested in going back to try out some deliciously fried food. Why not?? You should too.

A rainy evening in Wicker Park Lightning flashed from clouds so dark I didn't feel at all like cooking So onto Yelp! I went a-looking Something close enough to walk At prices not to make me balk It wasn't very out of whack For me to try Harold's Chicken Shack I'd walked right past it once or twice And always thought the food smelled nice But never did I go inside I thought, okay, tonight's the night A quarter-white is what I got With mild sauce - not the hot So piping hot I brought it home Ate it and then wrote this poem This chicken was as good as sin So good I even ate the skin This tells you that this place is a win Cuz I never ever eat the skin Now my veins are plenty full Of protein and cholesterol But I am sure another night I'll go from quarter to one-half white And one night after drinking late I might get the fried liver plate

Loved the chicken! Wings, hot sauce on the side, fry sandwich. It was hotter than hell in the restaurant, though. I think the A/C must have been out. Cole slaw was just okay. But the chicken, it was terrific. We can't wait for the next visit.

I love the catfish bucket. Always a welcome companion for an NFL sunday with the buds. The sauce they serve with the catfish is awesome as well. I am not a big fan of the fried chicken though. Not crispy enough for me. I actually prefer popeyes chicken. Like other posters have said - the fried chicken is better at the harolds on the south side.

Harold's fried chicken is served with a side of attitude, exactly as it should be. We have a joke at my office with every new employee that the first "hit" is free. It's like pot - not everybody gets high the first time they are introduced. But maybe a day, or a week later the cravings begin to take hold. A few meals later and you will find yourself mopping up the grease with the white bread garnish (included presumably to absorb any steam moisture that could make the breading soft, as if that is even possible with Harold's chicken). After eating our Harolds we all sit on our break-room couch spacing out, literally stoned on deliciousness. I've read some studies that fried foods are addictive, and once you try Harold's you'll believe.

Harold's is my favorite fried chicken in Chicago. My husband and I always get a mixed bucket of chicken. He likes the dark meat and I like the white meat so everybody is happy. Be sure to get the sauce too!

Sometimes a girl's just gotta get some fried chicken. Calories and workouts be damned. When the craving hits me, I know just where to go: Harold's Chicken Shack. Thank goodness it's nearby. But it is so finger-licking good that I'd be willing to make a special trip for it. Harold's blows KFC and Popeye's out of the water, by a mile. It's like the homestlye fried chicken you wish your momma made. And it's all cooked to order, so fresh and so clean clean. Seriously, this place is clean, I love places where you can see into the kitchen and this one has spotless floors, counters and whatever surface you want to throw in here. Back to the chicken. I'm strictly a white meat girl and Harold's does not disappoint. I won't even describe how good the chicken is, suffice to say it's perfectly crispy, moist, tender and proportionately greasy (not too greasy but enough to remind you what you're eating...fried goodness). And that mild sauce! It's like barbeque and ketchup came together to make a flawlessly sweet, tangy baby just to complement the savory chicken. I'm Filipino so of course I eat my Harold's chicken with rice. Don't knock it till you try it! My hubby gets the catfish and he loves that just as much as I love the chicken, so don't despair non-chicken eaters. There's something for (almost) everyone. But if you are looking for fried chicken, the search is over.

Ohhhh so close to being awesome...but you fall short Harold's. Nothing is wrong with the chicken, frying process, crust, etc...but I do have issues with the flavor. If they somehow managed to rework the recipe with some spices, I would give this place 5 stars. I really can't stand it when people say, its all about "the sauce ..dawg!" be silent. If you need to put sauce on something, its obviously not good enough to stand on its own. The chicken is fresh and well made....I'm not arguing that. my argument is that its just not flavorful. Get some flavor. Did Craig Mack sing a song about that? I don't care If you rate this place a 5...you have not been out of Chicago. Take a road trip through the deep south, then rate this place again. 5 stars? No way. This place is a 3.5 out of 5.

Hmmm.... I'm really not sure how many stars I should give this place. This is my first try at a Harold's Chicken after some friends raved about it. I like that the chicken is fried after you order it. I couldn't wait. I ate a drumstick in the car on the way home. It was greasy, juicy and delicious. I was ready to pledge myself to Harolds forever. But... well... One of the wing pieces came with feathers. Yes, fried and still attached (see pics). My first thought was, "are they raising their own chickens in the backyard?" My second thought, "ew, if they can't even get all the feathers plucked off, they are probably not cleaning the skin any good either." Yes, people, I have actually slaughtered, cleaned, and cooked fresh chicken before. I know how it should be done. I dunno... I was grossed out. I still ate the chicken (after peeling off the skins, which is too bad cuz the fried battered skin is really the best part), but for now, I don't think I'll be back to any Harold's any time soon.

The smell of fried chicken makes my mouth water. It was inevitable that Harold and I would hook up and so we did. I decided that a nooner was appropriate. I walked over, told him what I wanted: 1/4 dark. Yes, I love dark meat. As any lady would do, I waited for him to be ready, it was 10-15 minutes before I could finally have a taste. At first bite, the hot juices nearly burned my mouf! It was crispy though, I wished it could have been a bit more salty, especially with the fries. It never took me so long to finish. Umm.. what is the white bread for? To soak up the meat juices? So.. Harold, I thought you'd be better. I guess my fantasies of your meat were better than the real thing.

Tried their 4 wings + fries combo and it was alright.... I didn't think it was better than your average popeye's or anything like that. It also takes awhile for them to fry it; apparently they slay the chicken in the back or something, jk. But I'd probably come again if I was in the area.

I called today from my office phone to place an order for the staff here and was experienced some of the WORST customer service I have ever encountered in my life. Bria (the name she gave) told me I couldn't get deliver because the driver doesn't arrive until noon. I called at 11:50 am (common sense would say my order will take longer than 10 minutes to cook). Then she copied the telephone number down incorrectly (although she has caller ID) and canceled my order because she didn't get an answer when she tried calling back with the total. To make matters worst when I called back 30 minutes later to inquire about the total she says my order was canceled and would take an additional hour to arrive. We are literally 5 minutes from this location. She didn't offer anything for the inconvenience and couldn't tell me when the manager would be in ( Bo Pollard "if she's telling the truth) would be in. This tells me that I will NEVER purchase from this restaurant in the future and I strongly discourage all of you as well.

Pretty solid fried chicken - I think the fact that they fry it in front of you fresh makes it taste so much better. Sauce is good, I went with the hot but it's not really what I enjoy most about it. If you're expecting classy digs or friendly customer service - Coast sushi is right around the corner - this is Harold's. To be fair I don't think any restaurant that A) only produces fried foods B) calls itself a 'shack' and C) has a picture of a man running after a chicken with a hatchet - has any pretense of being a 'classy' institution. Then again, who want's 'classy' when you're after fried chicken? Soon I will compare this one with a 'control' harold's on 87th to check for authenticity and quality - will update my review accordingly.

Hmm, kinda surprised there's no other reviews for this spot. Anyways, I moved out of the neighborhood a little while ago, but when I was in the area, I came here at least once a month. The food is fresh, has friendly service and a clean establishment. But what impressed me was there was no bullet-proof window between me and the cashier! If you are familiar with the south side locations, you know walking into a Harold's felt like visiting a relative at 26th and California. What also impressed me was the clientele that came in. Who knew that a Filipino guy with a mohawk, wearing a Korn t-shirt and a kilt could get down with a large order of gizzards?!? Apparently it's not just a 'black thang'...

Meh. Like most other people, I heard great things about Harold's... The chicken was decent but not magical like some will have you believe. I had the 6-wing-with-hot-sauce-on-top dinner and I was pretty disappointed with the hot sauce and the bland breading on the wings. I didn't have any problems with service or anything, the mustached lady took my order quickly and it was ready in 10 minutes. The place was empty when I went (4pm on a Friday). Stick with something that has more flavor, like Popeyes or KFC. This particular location is pretty small, so if you're going to get food from here get it To Go. I guess it's just one of those places you have to try once just so you can say that you've eaten there, but don't go expecting "teh best fried chiken eva!!!1!1!!!1!!!"

Yum! I've walked by this place many times but never even noticed that it existed and sold one of my favorite foods ever: fried chicken! I probably would not have gone in if I hadn't read the Yelp reviews beforehand, and omg, it's some good chicken! I got the 1/2 chicken (dark meat) dinner, and waited about 10 minutes for my food. I love the fact that they fry the chicken fresh.. even after a 15 minute cab ride home it was still hot and crispy (and greasy and fatty and delicious...) The fries that come with the chicken weren't all that (soggy, boo!) but I didn't care. Cheap, yummy fried chicken means I will be returning to Harold's! Things I didn't like: the guy taking my order for sure judged me when I told him I wanted mild sauce on the side, hahaha. I'm not that hardcore! Also, when they say "Shack", they mean it. There's barely any seating so you probably shouldn't expect to dine-in.

fries needed salt and the chicken tasted like pepper. best part about my meal was the bread.

Okay, hands down the best fried chicken ever, anywhere. If you don't like it on the greasy side tell them "fried hard". The skin gets perfectly crunchy and the meat stays wonderfully juicy. I recommend you ask for black pepper too. Perfect blend of spices. Yes, there is always a wait, but that's what happens when it hasn't been sitting in a basket under a heat lamp I can't even ding them a star for the sometimes crabby woman (I think she's a woman) who works the register on occasion. The chicken is that good.

I guess I need more than word of mouth to satisfy my actual mouth. I sought out Harold's because people had told me I should try it, given my penchant for tasty chicken from skanky sources. And although Harold's gets full points for being low-brow (I rather enjoyed the thoroughly surly service), the chicken itself, where the rubber meets the road, just doesn't do it for me. Why didn't the rubber chicken cross the road when it met it? Cause it came from Harold's,,,, Here's the thing, and I may be misunderstanding this; Under the fries there are a couple slices of bread. This is ostensibly to soak up the nice grease and juices from the chicken and fries. But there were only a couple of tiny, lonely stains of funk. Nothing to make the bread feel necessary or as delightfully wrong as they should be. I like fried chicken, and although I can certainly eat this fried chicken, I won't be going out of my way for it again. Sorry.

I made it to Chi Town yesterday and will be here for 5 days. My first stop Was Harold's Chicken Shack. Man O' Man was the 1/2 white chicken dinner on tilt,. 2 breast/2 wings and a carton of fries with some hot sauce poured on top. MMMMMMMMMMMMm....You could smell the vinegar from the hot sauce steaming from the bag. It took all of 15 minutes from the time I ordered till the chicken touched my lips. You talking about some hot, juciy chicken. Ooooooweeeee! The chicken was fried to a rust colored sheen. Crunchy it was, oh yes, so very crunchy. One bite and the juice was ooozin. Just imagine a crunchy seasoned to perfection juciy breast and wing. I drove about 30 mins from the airport and in traffic. I had no idea where I was going or how good it would be. I just know I was on a Harold's Chicken Shack Mission. The drive was so worth it.

The funny thing about Harold's is you have to find one you like. Even though they're a chain, they each taste slightly different.... A fun pass-time while waiting for your deliciousness is to strike up a conversation with other patrons about which is the best in the city. I used to the think the best one was on 87th at the Dan Ryan, but then I went to 36! Seriously, add salt and pepper and there is no need for sauce. the lemon and sage flavors explode and the chickeny goodness is just friggin GOOD! then just dip a little. GAWD! Plus the place is immaculate! The staff is friendly, (if you've ever been to "that Harold's" you'll know why that's important) they'll take my debit card and there's no bullet-proof glass! Sad state of affairs that folks won't sell chicken on the south side without bullet-proof glass. Shame! Anyway this is so far the BEST Harold's I've had. I'll be trying and rating the others as I run across them... Tonight it's South Michigan at Cermak Rd. YUM!! and oh yes, try the liver!

I don't care how bad it is for you, good fried chicken is a delicacy. Seriously. I just said that. Wanna fight? Anyways, the Harold's Chains are an institution in Chicago. I was first delighted with their existence when I interned in college in Hyde Park. To me, that Harold's on 53rd street was the source for awesomely fried and breaded meat, full of Chicago flair, and a touch of the south. Yes, I am getting poetic about fried chicken, I love it, but since it kills you, I eat it maybe 3 times a year... When I learned there was a location in Wicker Park, I scoffed. "It can't be like my 53rd street one", I moaned. I remembered what happened to Chicago favorites of mine as soon as they expanded. They all went to crap. Joy Yee being the best example. So, I gave it a shot. The allure of their tangy yet spicy sauce and well fried perch led me to bite the bullet. It's good. It's great. Yes, it's an acquired taste, and I could hear my arteries hardening, but dammit, if you're going to eat breaded and fried meat... go for the gold! Eat the best available. If you happen to be over by 6 corners... this is it. /fried chicken fandom.

Food is good, service horrible. Called in an order for 2 half chicken dinners and was told 20 minutes. Arrived exactly 20 minutes later and order wasn't started. Waited there another 30 minutes until my order was ready. Yep, took 50 minutes total. I wish there was a White Fence Farm Express in the city.

HAROLD'S CHICKEN..."Now That Is Some Badass Fried Chicken!" I've tasted fried chicken from all over and I consider myself a fried chicken connoisseur. I would put Harold's Chicken near the top. To give you a frame of reference: The fried chicken you get at truck stop or a cafeteria is at the bottom: Tough, pockets of grease, relatively flavorless or too salty, large, unexpected chunks of white matter and fat, burning hot meat beneath a limp surface, utterly unsatisfying unless you are starving... The fried chicken you get at Harold's: Crispy, enough kick/seasoning to raise an eyebrow, but not enough to overwhelm the taste of the chicken, tender, moist meat, hot, but never scalding, free of grease pockets, but still plenty of delicious chicken skin (mmmm, fried chicken skin!) I'm a leg man myself and Harold's knows how to make a chicken leg taste great. The sides, eh, I don't go there for sides. I go there for a box of chicken, but I enjoy the white bread to sop up the sauce and chicken skin bits, but I've never thought chicken and french fries go together anyway. You want a side dish, get a giant pickle, that's a complimenting side. Overall, in my experience: Always hot and fresh, completely satisfying on the fried chicken scale, a 9.5, one star deducted because The Dinner Bell in McComb, Mississippi has the world's best and cannot be beat.

Fresh chicken is always better than lukewarm chicken and that's what you get here. The mild sauce isn't too spicy, but definitely gets messy (which is the way to go). The fries that came with my 6 wings were fine, but I had to eat the chicken first, so the fries had to suffer. Next up, hot sauce...

I get the feeling that all the fame of Harold's has brought it down several notches. I went to grab some lunch there yesterday afternoon. I asked simple questions about what came with the "dinners". I got the "you should know that" attitude even though it was my first visit to a Harold's. I ordered the 1/4 dark chicken dinner which came with a drumstick, thigh, cole slaw, bread and sauce. The coleslaw was excellent yet a small portion. Fries were thick and soggy. The bread was on the bottom of the plate to soak up the extra oil from the chicken and fries. The chicken dis not impress me at all. Not much flavor (lacked spices) and a tad overcooked. I also think that the oil in the fryolators needed to be changed as the chicken and fries were a tad bitter. I do appreciate that they cook your meal to order but I don't think it is worth the 10-12 minute wait. Sadly, chain fast food joints like KFC and Popeye's taste better and offer better value.

I love this place. Yeah, its not the best place to eat in at, but that is some good, good chicken at a very good price. I know the Wicker Park branch does not have quite the feel of other Harold's locations, I'm just happy there's one in the area. And yeah, its not good for you, but who cares? Its fried chicken. hot, greasy and plump twelve minute wait is time for coronary soon. OK. Not bad, not great. "Frank's" hot sauce is their go to. Too greasy for me, but that could be just the thing after a hard night. Carry on.

Best friggin' chicken ever fried in Chicago. The service in this particular spot leaves something to be desired, but hey... where else on the northwest side can I get my 4 piece fried hard w mild sauce and salt & pepper?

I have yet to eat the chicken, but I will tell you the fried catfish is now what me and friends now refer to as "the dopeness". Food here is cooked to order so be prepared to wait 10-15 minutes but it is well worth it. The sauce is one of the better sauces I've had, and this is coming from someone who spent 30 years in Kansas City area. The portions are large enough for the price; I could barely finish the small order of catfish which was 3 or 4 hefty strips on a large bed of fries. mmmm. I would recommend just getting take out as the interior is fairly small and the general ambiance is lacking.

I love Fried Chicken. I wish I didn't like it as much as I do as I know it is not that good for me. Harold's is not the best fried chicken I have ever had, but it is good enough that I go back for more. Reasonably priced, and the hot and mild sauce both have good flavor to them. Also like that the orders are made fresh, and it is nice to have the chicken still hot when I get home. Another test for me is how the chicken is the next day cold out of the fridge, and Harold's passes the test.

I'd heard mythical things about Harold's Chicken when I moved up to Chicago some 10 years ago. It took some time but I finally got around to trying it several years later and was, well, let's just say, "generally" satisfied. It was good, don't get me wrong, but when you hear the hype, the expectations run sky high. However, and perhaps no surprise here, it's clearly better than any chain i've had ala KFC, Popeye's, Church's and the like, but that's not so hard to do I guess. This location is very clean and the service is always quick and efficient. A downside of this location, however, is they don't have mashed potatoes and gravy, which is an atrocity when speaking of Fried Chicken....you defo have to have that and a biscuit or two (which they do have, and they're good). Instead you get fries, which are less than favorable, i'm talking a 2/5 at best. Overall it's a 3 star.

First time at Harold's Chicken Shack yesterday, and my man Harold did not disappoint. $8 for 2 large chicken breasts, 2 wings, fries, and toast? Delicious. The hot sauce smothered over the top completed this life changing experience. The breading was perfectly crispy and flavorful without being too greasy. Harold is killin it over there! Great spot

The chicken continues to be good, but the fries have gone downhill and the young woman working the cash register needs to get orders right and to try harder to smile and be polite. I mean, fried hard with salt and pepper is not a difficult order. She made sure that they fried it hard, but she did not key in salt and pepper on her register, so the guys in the kitchen didn't know to add it. It's too bad that Harold's batter is so bland that we have to do this, but so it goes.

Mild Sauce Cologne is what we call it at work. Once you eat a 6 piece wing meal with mild sauce, you are wearing it's fragrance the rest of the day. I grew up in the Northwest Suburbs, and knew nothing of Heralds until I got my first job engineering at a studio on 18th street. A brief discussion with a south side client about what we were gonna do for lunch lead to a trip to Heralds. I'll never forget that first impression. Ghetto, stingy, and they took my order through bullet proof glass. I was gonna order a chicken breast, but was advised otherwise. 6 piece wing meal with Mild Sauce. I've never had anything else from Heralds. It.... is...... an ADDICTION! This location on Milwuakee is actually really nice. Everything is made to order. There is no chicken sitting under heat lamps when ya come to Heralds. Heralds is what I would call "Chicago" style chicken. If your looking for spices in the batter go to Popeyes or KFC. Heralds is all about fresh chicken, salt, pepper, and the Mild Sauce. I don't know what their secret is, but I find myself sucking every last morsel off of every bone like a heroin addict desperately milking the last of his stash for a fix. You know that episode of the Simpsons were Homer gets high every time he bites into the Ribwich? Eating Heralds gives me that experience.

I've been to Harold's a few times and have tried the catfish, wings, and the white meat dinners, and I cant forget the fried okra side. The food is great and you can chose to either get mild or hot sacue on it or on the side- I usually get the hot sauce on the side. The food tastes so good going down maybe because it's covered in grease! This is going to sound nasty, but the only problem I have with harolds is that I taste the grease in my mouth and throat for almost a day afterwards! Hence I only go there if i'm a MAJOR fried chicken craving, otherwise I tend to stay away from it. The few times I've been there, there has always been a handful of people waiting for their food, regardless of the time! The location itself is small, when you walk in there's a counter you order at and there a few stools to sit on and wait for your food. The wait time is around 10 min, you can call ahead if you want. Most people take their food to go, I've only seen someone one eat at the restaurant once.

Right up the street! My tummy was grumbling for something in the fried food group so I walked the freezing cold streets of winter-time Chiburg to give Harold's a whirl. What a warming glowing warming warm glow this place emits. The exhaust fans were obviously off to conserve heat and the place was chalk full of fried chicken haze, it was eerie and magical! I am quite excited for the mood for Harold's comes back. The half-chicken was quite nice for the amount paid and the guys running the place mean business.

Best chicken ever! There is no comparison. I want "1/2 white with mild sauce" to be my last meal so I can die happy. 5 STARS!

Here's what you do: get the chicken and catfish combo. I prefer my chicken and fish naked (without being dipped in sauce)-- the meat has great flavor on its own, right amount of saltiness, crispiness, and juiciness. Sit down and read the magazines, this stuff is all cooked to order. When you get the food, take a good whiff and your mouth will water. Eat the diabolical duo while they're hot, because it doesn't seem to taste as good when the steam and the grease settle. Take your smashed up bread from the bottom of the carton and make a sandwich with the fish or chicken and throw a little HOT (the hot isn't that hot) sauce in there too. Some of the best comfort food you can get.

This is practically not a Harold's, since it doesn't have grumpy people yelling at you from behind a revolving bullet-proof glass counter door thingy. That said, there are still grumpy people, the food still comes out super slowly, and everything is still hot, delicious, fried to order, and comes with a sauce (hot, mild, or barbeque), a couple of slices of totally boring white bread, and a huge shovel full of some of the most delicious fries you'll ever have. Death never tasted so good.

food is great, the mild sauce is awesome as well takes a long time tho, so call ahead. I think it tastes better the next day cold right out of the fridge, so buy xtra i heard they deliver now too, sweet!

We picked up a bucket one busy night, and it was greasy and delicious. It either came with fries or we ordered them, I don't remember which - they weren't as good. You can watch your food being prepared - it's a very open layout, and it's nice to see that your food is being prepared in a clean way that's also safe for the employees. (My little brother used to work at KFC, and he would tell some pretty nasty stories sometimes, that's why I'm concerned.) There's a bench and they have magazines for you to read while you wait, which is always a huge plus. It also didn't take forever.

I always drive by this Harolds and I've been meaning to try it. I haven't had Harolds since my UofC days when there were only a handful of Harolds. The breading seems fluffy and sops up the sauce real good. I got all three sauces on the side, mild, barbecue and hot. The barbecue sauce is really smoky flavored. Sauce is 50 cents extra, although they are generous with it. The "bucket" of chicken comes in a bag so it is kind of messy unless you get the sauce on the side. An 8 piece (2 each of breast, thigh, wing, and leg) bucket is $9.65 plus sauce(s) plus tax. As soon as anyone came in they were waited on immediately. All food is prepared from scratch, so be prepared for a wait.

Dad: You know, there's a Harold's Chicken Shack 3 blocks away. Me: THERE'S A WHO'S WHAT WHERE??!?!? All right, I guess I'm yelping all the food I missed while in my Californian Captivity. Einstein needs to eat here, because I swear time slows down when you bite into one of those perfectly seasoned, crispy/juicy golden hunks of love.

Harold's makes some darn good chicken! They make it to order, so if there's a line, be prepared to wait 10-20 min, but it's so well worth it. It's decently priced too for made to order food, plus being in wicker park. Service behind the counter is pretty good, I like the open window so you can actually see them working frying up your chicken fresh. They have a large flatscreen inside to pass the time while waiting for your food, and there is high top seating along the sides and windows. I ordered the 1/4 white dinner which consists of 1 large breast, 1 wing, fries, 2 pcs of white bread, and your choice of sauce. My friend got the 6 pc wing dinner (also comes w/ fries, 2 pcs white bread, and sauce), and the wings are HUGE. After the 5 min walk home, the food was still piping hot. I bit into the breast and the juice squired out and burned me, it was HOT. Too hot to handle. Skin is super crispy, very well seasoned, and yes, it's pretty darn greasy, but that's why the white bread is there, to sop up the grease. Breast was so juicy. Fries are okay, thick cut and pretty well seasoned, but the chicken is the show stopper here. The mild sauce is not spicy at all, very vinegary. The hot sauce is VERY hot, it's basically Louisiana hot sauce, very vinegary and it hits you in your nose. Paid about $13.50 for these 2 meals, which is an awesome deal for 2 freshly cooked meals of some awesome fried chicken plus sides.

This is the worst Harold's Chicken Shack, but that isn't saying much because it still beats any other chicken chain in Chicago. You can still get "buckets" of awesome fried goodness. The chicken is still deep-fried in oil mixed with beef tallow. Okay, let's take a break and understand this. Beef tallow in your deep fry oil is crucial. It is what made McDonald's before the vegans sued them for beef fat in their oil. Tallow fries at a higher temperature and gives a flavor that while you may not be able to pick it out, will appreciate what it does. Their chicken is delicious and juicy with a crispy crunch that'll never let you appreciate Popeye's or Brown's the same again. I say that because KFC goers will just never understand the complete awesomeness of really really good fried chicken. This location offers up fried fish and okra too. The fried okra is great. They don't have a bulletproof glass counter window which takes away from the decor. Occasionally they have 8 pieces of dark meat for $5.99 which makes it cheaper than any other fried chicken place I can think of. This location's chicken is a bit greasier and their hot sauce is a bit saltier, but it's still amazing. As long as I can have my fried chicken on wonderbread and fries with hot sauce dripping over it with a 5 minute wait so hot grease doesn't shoot all over me leaving short-order cook type burns, I'm a happy camper with this Harold's.

This Harold's outpost in Wicker Park is quite welcome, as the Popeye's down the block has long since departed. Go for the local, I always say. I came here for the first time late last year, not expecting much -- the initial reviews in the Reader panned the scrawniness and dryness of the chicken. However, what I got was exemplary fried chicken, juicy and flavorful throughout. The true test of a decent chicken shack is how they cook the breast. This one more than passed muster -- not dry and overdone, and proved why it's my favorite chicken piece. Harold's is a Chicago institution, as evidenced by the numerous shops interspersed throughout mostly far-flung, predominately African-American neighborhoods in the city. Thank goodness I don't have to go far afield anymore for the best chicken in the Chicago area. Not one for fancy sides, the dinners come BBQ-style, with fries, 2 slices of bread, and cole slaw. One can request the addition of hot sauce, their signature BBQ sauce (recommended!) and/or salt & pepper. The already-tasty crust of the chicken becomes nearly transcendent when that BBQ sauce soaks in. Also on offer are gizzards and liver, some fish (perch and catfish), mushrooms and okra, all breaded and deep fried. Don't feel like picking it up yourself? Tough titties. They used to have delivery available, but have since abandoned the service. Dining in is an option, but only if one is truly on the go -- six barstools and two countertop-style tables on opposite ends of this tiny storefront aren't too conducive. The store is kept spotlessly clean. Each order is cooked to order by 2 extremely busy staffers, so expect about a 10- to 15-minute wait. Just so we're clear here, this is a chicken shack we're talking about. No vegetarian options are available -- they fry in a signature mix of beef tallow and vegetable oil. There's nothing remotely healthy on the menu. Just tuck in and eat tonight, then serve yourself an extra helping of oatmeal in the morning. Your arteries are gonna need it. But it's so worth it.

This was my first Harold's experience in Chicago ... and WOW! I'm in love. The service was absolutely outstanding, with the woman behind the counter coming out to sweep up and clean up where we were planning on sitting. She apologized *immensely* for the mess, which wasn't even that bad. The food was fresh, the chicken was crisp, and the hot sauce was intense. It's the kind of place you go for a true comfort meal, or if you're in the mood for some grease and hot sauce. Fried chicken to me is a lot like sushi ... it's absolutely filling, but you don't feel stuffed. I'll definitely be going back. For the price, it was a delicious meal. EDIT: Just so y'all know ... I went here AGAIN today. They are so friendly, always friendly. No lie. I haven't had a bad/rude experience in all my visits!

I don't know what else to say about this place. It's awesome. It's the best fried chicken I've ever had. And yes, like Julian says, it's sans bulletproof glass like you get visiting some of the places on the south side. I've been going to various Harold's ever since I was a kid, and Harold's was a special 'city treat' when my family came into the city. It's horrible for you, but it carries a certain nostalgia. I'm going to pick up some now.

Torry S.
I've eaten Harolds in the hoodest of hoods and the ones in he loop and this one ranks upper tier. Some of the original harold's on the south side have gone down the toilet with premade chicken they refry just to get you out fast. This one always makes it fresh so it has a longer wait. The freshness give it a juicyness to it that is uncompared with any chain restaurants. Best fried juicy chicken breast you can get without having to dine in. If you haven't got mild sauce on your chicken, DO IT, that's an order.

I wouldn't go here with my Sexy Black Dress on but!! Finger Licking GOOD to the GOOD GOOD GOOD!!! Especially when the chicken is soaked in the sauce! After all whats the point of not having the sauce? I can fry up my own chicken Louisiana Style! .. the staff just want you in and out..no Friendly welcome.. but they will take care of you Quickly!

Being a southern boy I regularly crave Fried Chicken (and yes, as a southern boy I capitalize it with the respect due certain deities). The place probably would've looked a little dingy and grubby back in the 70s, which to me says it MUST be awesome, and the food didn't disappoint. I'll definitely be going back.

Whoever is behind Harold's is responsible for one of this generations greatest discoveries in physics. Right up there with Universal Gravitation and Special Relativity sits Harold's somehow fried yet not greasy chicken. They should just shut down CERN and save us all the (minute) possibility of earth (and surrounding celestial bodies) being swallowed up in a man-made black hole, and instead divert all funding to Harold. He's got a much better track record.
(4)
Bill J.
The chicken strips with fries and hot sauce are the way to go. Steer clear of the perch. This place is 1000x better than Milwood. Anybody else notice Milwood has resorted to selling $2 bud lights? That place sucks, Harold's is a lot better.

Kevin Y.
I love this place. It makes me happy. And it's not just the chicken, which you can see from the other reviews is very good, but the fried catfish with the hot sauce is by far the best catfish I've ever had. My girlfriend doesn't even like catfish and she loves this stuff.
(4)

Mmmmmmmm.... if you like chicken legs, chicken wings, chicken breast, or any fried chicken you don't even need sauce for because of its greasy goodness; You'll love Harold's. It is one of my faves, and I suggest if you've never had it you need to get to your local Harold's Chicken Shack ASAP!

Don't walk in here expecting something you know you aren't going to find. Deep fried food, made to order. The 6 piece wing meal with hot sauce on the side is what I always get. Chicken is juicy and tender, fries are average, and the two pieces of bread are a welcome addition. Give it a shot

I would give it 3.5 stars. This isnt amazing chicken, I actually prefer Browns chicken over this, however, the fried LIVERs are divine, yes, try them! This place doenst really spice the chicken or anything but they cook it fresh to order. The wait has never been longer the 8 minutes for me. If you are craving fresh fried chicken, this place will suit you well.

I grew up on the south side of Chicago and Harolds was a once a month treat. Once I moved to the north side the only way for me to get GOOD fried chicken made the way I want was to do the trek out south. Well that was until I found this gem in Wicker Park... I go now as often as I can, calling in my order ahead of time. The food is hot, fresh, cook and seasoned the way I want. In all of my travels I have not found a better chicken shack. The secret is call ahead or plan on waiting 20 minutes...

This gets an extra star because it is the cleanest Harolds I've been to. The fried chicken is good, but only fresh, its not really the best "eat cold" chicken, probably because its of the really crispy side of the spectrum. I love that side of the spectrum. It can be a bit pricey, when compared to grocery store chicken, or other places chicken (that regularly do coupons). Chicken size is ok, not tiny like Popeyes, but not quite as gargantuan as Browns. I like to appreciate every chicken place for its uniqueness and Harold's excells at its plainness (not in a bad way). If you imagine home made fried chicken, not southern fried, not extra battery, not cajun, not buttermilk (like Brown's) you imagine this. Thats not bad at all.

Ben E.
I've eaten at this location a couple of times and have no complaints. The chicken is about as greasy as any other Harold's, and the sauces are pretty much the same as well. It is neither better nor worse than many Southside Harold's, and it is by far the best Northside Harold's I've tried (e.g. a Loop location that was just beyond awful and is now closed). If you like greasy fried chicken, go no further. It's definitely better to eat here than any fast food chain.
(3)
Jamie G.
The chicken is freshly fried, which is definitely something you won't see at KFC. The fries are slightly below average, but still good. Oddly, or maybe it makes sense, the piece of chicken grease-drenched Wonder bread is quite delicious.
(4)
Zoran D.
I really like their chicken. Nice size pieces. Full a flavor and juicy. I only wish there was a location a little closer to Norwood Park so I don't have to dirve for some tasty chicken. It's still worth the drive. If you want chicken, this is the place to go to.
(4)
Brian T.
Harold makes mince-meat out of Colonel Sanders and Popeye. The secret is the sauce. It compliments the chicken perfectly, and augments the only-decent french fries. I have no need for the slice of Wonder bread, but, I understand that it comes with the territory. Now, is it true that there are 36 Harold's locations in town? For chrissakes, he should be running the Colonel out-of-town. The real extra-tasty-crispy can only be found at Harold's.
(4)
Nina W.
Can this truly be the cleanest Harold's in Chicago? I think so. I ordered the small catfish with mild sauce and fries and it came with two pieces of white bread and slaw. Not for the faint of heart or those on a carb-free diet, but for the rest of us, it's definitely recommended. Their fried catfish is to die for. I spent under $8.00 without tax. If you super impatient, call ahead of time to order. I will be back.

idk if its the fact that i am not a fried chicken aficionado or just the high expecations, but i harolds didn't blow me out of the water. my chicken was good, but nothing i hadn't had before. i think i liked the catfish better than the chicken.

I hadn't had Harold's in years because I didn't think there was one on the north side. I found this one then when on the way home saw there's one on Wilson...wouldn't ya know it..... But this visit to the Milwaukee Ave store was totally seamless!! They closed at 9pm on the 4th so she even called me back to tell me they were dropping my food in at 800p. By the time I got there at 825p she had me ready to do a U-ee out the door. Had a smile on her face, we exchanged pleasantries, talked about the drink we was gonna have with this bagged up table full of goodies, then out the door we went. Ok this is as good as I remember. We sat down to 8 piece dark with onion rings, fries, coleslaw and it wouldn't be Harold's without the white bread to soak up that greeze!! My partner never had Harold's before, never heard of it. He can't get enough of that sauce Poured it over everything on the plate then dipped all the bread and ate that too!! 4 pieces, a load of fries and 8 onion rings later, we were done; couldn't finish it. Chicken was tender, moist, a little bit on the salty side but still greezy great!!! Maybe next visit they can not put in that much salt but I still wore it out. This is NOT the chicken to be proper with...eat everything off the bone so even Mr. Manners wanna complain!! Onion rings and fries were really good. That cole slaw...it should be a crime to just have a SMALL cup of that stuff. It's a wonderful combination of slightly sweet, creamy and COLD!! Do they make a bigger container...we'll soon find out. But we got I-tis and if I hadn't fallen asleep after that fine mess of food, I would have written this sooner!! Overall I give this location a total 5 stars. If you haven't tried Harold's then what are you waiting for???? It's not Church's, Brown's, Popeye's or KFC...but still makes a great meal!!

Went to Harold's chicken shipped through the Wicker Park sidewalk food tour the chicken probably is the best fried chicken I've ever had crisp light the sauce was not too spicy not too sweet it was actually perfect.

Omg I heard about this chicken and was not disappointed! My mouth was pleased with the very first bite! I got the combo with the fried perch. I wish I had one in my state because it was definitely good eating. Hell I'm craving it now while typing this review. If traveling, get a combo for now and get another one for later. You won't regret it.

LOVE fried chicken. That's the easiest way to convince me to eat chicken. Came here one late afternoon when my boy and I were feeling hungry and were in the neighborhood. When we arrived, we realized that everyone came to pick up orders. And everything was MADE TO ORDER. Great idea, but not so great when you're starving. The service is minimal here, and honestly, I felt very out of place. I would suggest to call ahead and order your chicken before coming to pick it up in 20 minutes. I would not step in there alone, ever. And I would not go there at night either. We tried wings (my fave!!), drumstick and thigh. So all dark meat. batter crispy, meat juicy. Would I say the batter is very tasty? not really. Eat it with the mild sauce (basically ketchup), makes it much more palatable. Dinner order comes with fries and bread. Nothing special, but decent fries. Bread, not sure what to do with it. In short, call ahead, get the dark meat and mild sauce, come in 20 minutes or more to pick up your order!
(4)
Irene G.
Yes, the chicken is great and one of the best I've tasted, but if you call in the order 25+ min, ahead of time and arrive to pick it up only to be told it's going to take another 25+ min., then it's not worth it. Maybe I caught them on an off night, but I just know it will be a long time before I order from here again. For quick and just as tasty fried chicken, go to Popeye's drive thru or get them from Jewel deli which actually is pretty good ok!

Went here as part of our Chicago Sidewalk Food tour and learned there's over 60 of these shops and it's a Chicago staple. Just had a chicken wing and it was mighty tasty. Apparently it takes 30 minutes to make so call ahead! The most unique part for me was the batter. Unlike most fried chicken, the batter was light and flaky versus oily and heavily breaded. Didn't really care for the sauce - it tasted like something you would put on a chicken nugget. Just a small shop with limited seating.

I consider myself and my buddy pretty much regulars at this Harold's, going at least once a month, if not 2-3 times. Up until the past month, we never had a bad experience. Large orders of tenders, extra mild on it, couldn't beat it. The past two times this month, the chicken just isn't the same. While the pieces are bigger, they are bland, no taste at all, and it lacks the old crunch they used to have. Even the amazing mild sauce can't make up for it. Not sure if they changed suppliers or what, but until the chicken goes back to the way it was, don't think I will go back to this Harold's. Harold's was always our #1 choice for chicken, makes us upset to see the quality suffer.

Six wings mild sauce and fries will change the way you see the world! Modern updated decor, nope. 20 min waits you bet. But when your order number pops up, you unwrap that meal and you taste that chicken....Wow. I don't think I can say anything else. My stomach is literally rumbling just thinking about it...

This is my favorite thing right now. I was never huge on chicken but this place rules. I either get the 2 piece white or the 6 wing hot. I probably look like a rabid straving maniac once I get down to the bottom and I'm shoveling pieces of fried chicken scraps and french fries, wrapped in a hot sauce saturated piece of white bread into my mouth.
(5)

This place is solid fried chicken. I almost always get a gizzard/wing combo anymore, though their other offerings are solid as well. This place consistently takes me to a peaceful pollo state! Sit back and let the good vibes flow. Easy no brainer good chicken. Staff can be a little intense, but I'm not coming here for atmosphere. I'm coming here to transcend into the chicken zen, and Harold's delivers.

If your curious about BDSM, you can be treated like a gimp here for the low low price of a half chicken mixed. Just don't expect them to honor your safe word. And be prepared to wait 15-20 minutes for your reward or you may also get a tongue lashing. I've been eating Harold's as long as I can remember. Back in Hyde Park during the 80s if we were particularly well behaved my dad would sometimes reward us with Harold's from the store on 53rd. Before I could read I could recognize their signature to-go bags with the chef chasing a chicken with a butcher knife. I longed for Harold's after moving to the burbs and then later to MI. And I never found any comparable fried chicken. Visits to NYC, SF, LA etc. - fruitless. [Roscoe's fried chicken w/ waffles in LA was particularly laughable by comparison.] Fast forward to my adult years after moving back to Chicago but on the north side. No Harold's to be found. So the only Harold's I'd visit was in the south loop, and the combination of pan handlers and horrendous service (even by Harold's standards) I just stopped going. Then a few years back they opened this spot up in Wicker Park. As an initiated Harold's patron, I knew that despite the 'kum ba yah' attitude fostered in the neighborhood - I expected to be treated with indifference at best and disdain at worst. But still that chicken is so good - like an abused animal - I still loved and sought affirmation from my abusive handler. And Harold's has not disappointed on either the abuse or the delayed affirmation. Just trying to order by phone can be an adventure. I've been hung up on, had them not answer the phone extended intervals, been told I couldn't order over the phone because it was within an hour of closing, been told the credit card machine was down, or my favorite, being hung up on and then having the line ring busy for an extended amount of time. In short, despite the 15-20 minute wait - I'd actually recommend that you order in person, smile so as not to offend, and get a beer across the street at the arcade bar while you wait. Why do I suggest you not wait there? Simple - because any patron unfamiliar with Harold's customer service could set off a riot. I'm not sure at this point how people can't know what to expect - and in Harold's defense, they cook the food after it is ordered, which is why it tastes so good. But instead of explaining the wait time - or having a bigger sign (they do but it's small), there tends to be a near confrontation every time an inexperienced customer makes a face when being told their order will take however long. Sometimes these same patrons will try to rally the other folks waiting around for their food - which is unnerving but kind of funny at the same time because most folks waiting are in the know and simply shrug in response. The best is when people have ordered ahead, and show up only to find their order hasn't even been started yet. That's also happened to me a few times but again - you have to take it in stride. I've never seen anyone banned but I have seen refunds given and orders canceled (with attitude of course). Two other tips - the fried okra is also very good and the best time to go is right after they change the frier oil. Overall the chicken is an easy five star call. The service is an easy one star call. That works out to three stars in my book.

OH HAROLD'S. You are worth every bit of the 25 minute wait. I'm not from the midwest, I don't know about the mild sauce shit. Maybe I should try some time. But 8 piece hot sauce drizzling on the fries is a beautiful thing. Yea, you might not finish but you'll have leftovers for later. The wings are just perfect, coming from a connoisseur. Cooked perfectly fresh. You can't beat it. Always gotta stop here when in the Chi.

Now to be fair I haven't eaten fried chicken in a very long time, so either this is just the best fried chicken ever or fried chicken is more wonderful than I remember! They fry here to perfection, the skin and batter so crisp and the meat still tender and juicy. Love the dipping sauce. I could just drink it up. Also tried the fried okra. It was perfectly fried but still not good enough to convince me that I actually like okra...I don't. Keep in mind that they cook to order so must plan on at least a 20 minute wait! Worth it though.

I'm drunk right now. And I am eating chicken. And I feel like my life is perfect. My hands are greasy and slightly covered in mild sauce. I am happy. I said that. Chicken is a great equalizer. 5 stars. Would chicken again.

Had to go to Harold's while I was in the Chi. Ordered 12 wings mild sauce on the side. Wings remind me of Popeyes. 1-5=4. Mild Sauce 1-5=5.

I'm a fried chicken snob, so forgive me when I say that although the chicken is good it lacks that thick buttermilk batter you get at some other fried chicken places in Chicago like Krispy krunchy for example. I totally understand that some people like it this way so that's why I'm giving four stars. On top of that their delivery is fast and the chicken is always delicious.

I'm from the south, so I'm always interested in finding really good fried chicken to fill that homesick pang for soul food I get on occasion. This place is perfection. The fried chicken is absolutely delicious. The service is mediocre, but whatever. It's not like you're going to eat there. Just grab your chicken, go home and be completely delighted. Even when you wake up from the food coma, you won't regret your gluttony.

This review is for every Harold's Chicken Shack in general. Their fried chicken is so good. It's one of the best places to go for fried chicken in the Chicago area.

1/2 white chicken with hot sauce... yes please! Takes about 10-15 mins per order but that's totally fine with me (ya know...since I like my food cooked). Pretty good chicken. Funny staff. I'd come back.

Chicagos best Harolds Chicken. Ive been coming to this place for a couple of years. Their wings are the best, crispy not too greasy. Always get an 8 wing combo even if you don't finish it youll always want to eat it later.

Was reimbursed for the $80 overcharge, they did end up calling me as well. However I still don't recommending making a purchase with them by credit or debit card. Mediocre Harold's not at all representative of the ones on the south side of Chicago. Definitely request salt & pepper on your wings and ask for extra sauce b/ they barely put any on the chicken or fries

It was a fateful night that we ended up here. After getting discouraged by Kuma's Corner who said there was a 2.5 hour wait (WTF!!!) we decided to just head to this neighborhood for bars and eat somewhere. When looking at my food list for the trip, I saw this last addition. Just a couple days before I left for Chicago I stumbled upon the Yahoo article that listed this as one of the best fried chicken places in the US. Skeptical, but intrigued, I was glad to see we would still be eating somewhere well known now that kuma's corner hadn't worked out. After walking a block from the train station i saw exactly what I expected. A grungy, no non-sense sign that was exactly what it said: fried chicken. There's no gimmicks or games with this place. It's a simple men with fried chicken and french fries and a list of sides. I ordered the 1/4 White, which is basically 2 loaves of white bread as the bed for a half-load of french fries and a 2 pieces of white breast fried chicken. The best part of this was that it was about $5. What you must get though is the hot sauce...it probably makes it. The fried chicken was really crispy and delicious. If i had to be negative, I was kind of hoping for more actual meat, but it didn't fall off the bone as easily as i hoped. I was also a little disappointed that there was no mac n cheese on the menu. Fried chicken and mac n cheese is like cereal w/o milk. But anyways, it was cheap. It was delicious. Was it thee best fried chicken I've ever had? I personally would have to say Flossie's in Torrance, CA takes the cake for me, but I'm not opposed to there being better than that too. It is on the better side of fried chix tho. With all this said, I know others will disagree and i know Ashley D. will read this review and be upset b/c she pretty much climaxed after eating this chix, but that's mostly b/c of all of the chocolate daddy's around this store. She can't resist.

Went here once, because, it's fried chicken, why wouldn't I? I'm pretty laid back when it comes to service, if I get great service, I definetly remember, if I get so-so service, it probably won't deter me from coming back. Which brings me to Harold's service: I went in knowing that the chicken is cooked to order and there would be a wait, so I called about twenty minutes ahead of time to order 2 half chicken meals. When I got there, the dude at the counter was having trouble finding my order. I told him what I ordered and...ohhh yeeaahh, here it is..(goes back to the kitchen to hand the cook my order). After that it took about another 20 minutes to get my order. When he handed me my order, I obviously checked it after the service I had already received, and there was only one half chicken in there. As far as the food goes, the standard half chicken meal comes with fried and a slice of white bread. It was pretty good, but is it worth the wait for it dealing with incompetant workers?? Naw, probably not, there are too many other great places to go in this city.

I've been trying to get some of Harold's Fried Chicken for months... finally made it and I dont regret it at all! Mind you they make it as you order so wait for 20 minutes. Reminds me of a mom and pop place its small and they dont have tables for you to stay and eat, but they have counters on the side with bar stools. I ordered 1/4 dark meat lunch special for $5.45. It comes with 2 slices of bread, fries, and a pop. Chicken was well seasoned, crispy, and moist. It is quite addictive... want to try their catfish next and maybe another set of chicken. :-D

God forbid your order food and disturb the girl at front counter . Which one you ask ? Don't matter they all have attitudes. And lack of thankfulness they have a job. I'll still eat there regardless of bad attitudes and the lack of service .the food is good and I have love there sauce for years. When you think about what you get for $8 from across street or anywhere in wicker park for that matter, Harold's is one of the only place I feel that gives you close to your money's worth !

Real great food just I recommend you call and place your order instead of waiting 20mins.

If I were to die tomorrow, fried chicken with the fixins would be my last meal. Wait, actually a lobster tail smothered in butter with a side of stuffed mushrooms, no; maybe crab stuffed shrimp....I digress....The fact is I really have an affinity for fried chicken. I have very strong feelings in a positive way for Popeyes so imagine my surprise and delight to find that there was a Harold's in Wicker Park. It was like Christmas in July! I have had Harold's on my list since I first heard about it's existence in like junior high. So here's how it went down. I waited in line, searching for a menu. It's a tiny little paper menu on the counter. It isn't all that extensive, not that it needs to be. I ordered the 8 wing dinner (special request for the cole slaw, who wouldn't request cole slaw?!) The less than delightful lady working the register was impossible to understand and gave me attitude when I asked her to repeat herself. I assumed she asked if I wanted sauce so I replied happily with a yes. She looked at me crazy and asked what kind, well hell, how should I know there is a variety of choices. Hot sauce please! Well, wings were just okay. To my dismay, I'd take Popeye's over Harold's. Fries again, just okay if not a little undercooked. Where they shine is the hot sauce. I could probably drink it!!! The other gold star goes to the tiny portion of cole slaw I had to special request, good thing I did.

Came here yesterday. I placed an order online through Living Social at 2:33. The estimated wait time was 35 minutes. I arrived at 3:07. I tell her girl my name. I find out that my order isnt ready. To make matters worse, they hadnt even started my order. In fact no food was in the fryer. The staff doesnt seem to be concerned. I finally get my food at 3:26. The girl at the register looked like some ratchet puta. SH!TTY SERVICE!!!! I will NEVER EVEEERR come to this hell hole again. If this place doesnt value and respect its customers then it should be shut down. Totally unacceptable!

I love fried chicken. I love the fried chicken at Harolds. This could totally be the end of my Yelp review, but I'll fill you in on some some of the details. They don't expect many people to eat here. A majority of the people take it to-go. There's only enough room for about 7-8 people to sit down. The dining area is extremely small. Fried Chicken - Cooked to order. Doesn't sit underneath a heating lamp. Can't get any better than this. Yes, you have to wait about 20 minutes for your order. So grab a seat if there's one available and watch whatever they have on the TV there. The chicken is always cooked perfectly. Served piping hot! The chicken is ALWAYS juicy, moist and wonderful. I've never had a bad piece of chicken here. Fried Catfish - this maybe a "chicken shack" but their fried catfish is to die for! The fish is always cooked to perfection. The seasoning so rather subtle and let's the flavor of the catfish shine through. There are times that I crave for their fried catfish. Weird, I know. Fries - There fries are okay. Nothing all that special. It's a great addition to the meal since it soaks up some of the grease that comes from the chicken and catfish. Hot Sauce - I don't know if it's just a generic hot sauce or something that they make in-house, but it goes extremely well with their chicken and catfish. There' the perfect amount of spice and flavors to balance everything perfectly. I am a frequent flyer of this Harolds. I think it's much better than the one in the South Loop. I'll be back, hopefully a lot sooner than later. #hellaYUMMS

This location is fantastic. The chicken takes long to cook because they use just a regular fryer and not a pressure cooker. It's worth the wait. Swing into one of the many bars on Milwaukee while you wait. Served on a slice of white bread to sop up the grease and have many sauces available. Catfish is legit also. Can't beat the price! Bonus, bring your bag 'o chicken across the street to Emporium Arcade bar and grab some crafties to wash down the supremely crispy bird. Can't beat it for chicken in the WP area.

OK, so their serivce is sometimes laughably surly, but the fried chicken is addictive (literally - try the 1/2 chicken dark with mild and BBQ sauce slathered on and achieve a tallow-induced food high). I'd go 3.5 stars if possible (2 stars service, 5 stars food).

Yesterday I came to the Wicker Park Harolds Chicken and the day before I went to the one in Englewood. Big difference. This Harold's was very clean and modern and even the kitchen was in pristine condition, unlike the Englewood location, which was old fashioned and just seemed a bit antiquated, although still they were clean. The prices seem to be different from the other Harolds Chicken also, by $1. the difference is that this one provided you with a beverage, where as the other one didn't, and this one way even tastier for sure. The gizzards and wing combo made me turn my head like Reagan in the Exorcist. I LOVED IT.

You want a good laugh? Call this place up right around lunch time. Damn near 100% of the time, the same woman will pick up the phone, and if it is her- you are sure to hear her yell out "HAROLDS!!!" as her greeting call. Her awkward, yet sharp-toned voice is not the friendliest way to answer the phone, but for us at work who order from here every couple of weeks, it ALWAYS cracks us up. In terms of comparing this Harold's to others- it isn't all that bad, but maybe because I was spoiled with the Harold's on Cottage Grove and 44th back in the day, I can't go beyond an A-OK. Prices are a bit steep- once again, in comparison to other Harold's- but that could be the real estate costs kicking in. Say it with me now: Half Dark Mild Sauce Hard Fried Gizzards are decent, and this place won't tell you straight up, but if you ask- they DO have lunch specials. Demand them. Prices change all the time, so I think they are making it up on the spot- but it is always a much better deal than their normal menu prices. God I love fried chicken...

Delicious! I admit, I was a bit apprehensive about Harold's...I mean, it's always crowded...but it looked like such a hole in the wall. I didn't know what I had been missing! First of all, this spot is sparkling clean..seriously...you could eat off of the floor! That alone scores points. The service was very friendly. We were helped to pick menu items when we seemed a bit torn about what to order. The value is definitely superb...feeding 2 for under $10?! Awesome! The food itself - delicious! I will definitely return! Y.U.M.

This place hit's the spot. Well Done. I would reco calling ahead if you can as everything is cooked fresh to order so there may be a 15-20 min wait or so. The Fried Chicken and the Catfish are very good.

This is more a review for Harold's in general but I'm reviewing this specific one since one of my best friends used to live right by it and we would go like it was church on Sunday and we were southern baptists. So, I'm from LA and we have this thing out there called Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles (maybe you've heard of it?) but when I moved out to Chicago I forsook Roscoe for my new god, Harold. Oh Harold, you give me religious ecstasy. You thought Bernini's St Theresa was really feelin' it? That's cause you've never seen me with my Harold's chicken and a side of fried okra. Harold, Oh how I delight in your ambrosia, and suckle from your magnificent sauce teat. Your tender flesh delights (never overcooked, always juicy), your tangy mild sauce elevates, and your okra leaves me breathless and faint begging for more. Won't you fill me again with your finger-lickin' majesty?

This is cooked to order chicken, so expect a good wait. It's worth it! Fries are unbelievable. I don't even feel guilty after I eat them because they're so amazing. We usually get the double breast. So. much. meat. The only thing I knew previous to Harolds was KFC, and I feel like this place is a life changer. Hot and mild sauce are tasty. I even love the white bread it comes with. I will say, I live a close walking distance to this Harolds, so I get it home and eat it within just a few minutes, which makes it all the better. Will be ordering and eating Harold's often.
(5)Russ S.
This place is the worst. They over charge for bullshit. Nothing was good about it. I seriously prefer popeyes. also, the people that work there looked like they were about to die.
(1)Valissa W.
(3)Leang E.
(4)Danny W.
I won't beat around the bush. The white bread is always smashed. The fries are never crispy. The mild sauce is too sweet. And none of this matters because you come for the chicken. And the chicken is the truth.
(4)Rachel M.

Half dark Hot sauce wet Extra fried Enough said... :-)
(4)Ericka F.
Best fried chicken I've ever tasted in my life. (SORRY MOM!) Always fresh, hot and crispy. The sauce is the bomb. One time they forgot to send my bbq sauce and my meal was just not the same. You gotta have that sauce!
(5)Jacob W.
(4)Andre W.
Mmmm good!
(5)Paul D.
is there something wrong with me? This chicken is rancid. I've tried it multiple times and it is just disgusting. I cannot fathom why everyone loves it. It tastes like cleaning fluid.
(1)Lidia L.
(4)J. K.
Pretty bad, dry, smelly chicken. Was very surprised at how bad it was. Bad French fries too, soggy and undercooked or something.
(1)Ashley D.
freaking bomb. so simple. CHEAP. so amazing. so ghetto. perfectly fried chicken. good fries. HOT SAUCE. this meal honestly had me on a high for days and i would have gone back twice more if i could have during my short weekend trip. one of the best (if not the best) chicken experiences i've ever had. 1/4 white chicken breast and wing, so crispy and juicy i've never picked apart a piece of meat like i did here.
(5)Samantha J.
have been back to Harold's and a very nice gentleman took my order! much better service... oh, and they finally got new flooring. makes it seem a little cleaner.
(5)Shaydon A.
(2)Ashley S.
(2)Tom I.
(4)Eric L.
Chicken has Nice crispy outside and tender juicy inside. Taste nice and fresh. My only critique would be that it lacks seasoning in comparison to say Popeyes. Service was Excellent BTW.
(4)Michael F.
(4)Steve M.
(4)Derek S.
(4)Bonnie C.
Loved the chicken! Wings, hot sauce on the side, fry sandwich. It was hotter than hell in the restaurant, though. I think the A/C must have been out. Cole slaw was just okay. But the chicken, it was terrific. We can't wait for the next visit.
(4)Ryan M.
(3)Jason H.
(5)Suzy D.
Harold's is my favorite fried chicken in Chicago. My husband and I always get a mixed bucket of chicken. He likes the dark meat and I like the white meat so everybody is happy. Be sure to get the sauce too!
(5)Czarina C.

(2)Tiffany T.

(1)Sagar N.
(4)Julian W.
(4)Pritesh P.
(2)Kim C.
(4)Magen M.
fries needed salt and the chicken tasted like pepper. best part about my meal was the bread.
(1)Wendy L.
(5)Leon I.
Sorry.
(2)Cletus O.
Visited here last Friday and purchased the 1/2 mixed chicken dinner, which comes with fries & bread. Chicken was good, the best quality being that it wasn't greasy.
(4)Michael H.
Really, really good friend chicken cooked to order. Always hot and crispy. Simple and great. Cash only.
(5)Sam Y.
Aweful customer service. Didn't end up ordering from here. Impossible to get them on the phone. Took 30 minutes to talk to someone. She was impossibly rude. I am now boycotting this place. This branch is a joke!

(4)Kim A.
(5)Lulu L.

(4)Nicolas H.
(4)Mihir P.
(2)Jesse L.
You can check out a full review on my blog. fastfoodreviewed.com/now…
(5)Paulius N.
hot, greasy and plump twelve minute wait is time for coronary soon. OK. Not bad, not great. "Frank's" hot sauce is their go to. Too greasy for me, but that could be just the thing after a hard night. Carry on.
(3)Kegan C.
Best friggin' chicken ever fried in Chicago. The service in this particular spot leaves something to be desired, but hey... where else on the northwest side can I get my 4 piece fried hard w mild sauce and salt & pepper?
(5)Nick S.
(4)Brian A.
(4)Brent W.
(3)Tyler V.
Great spot
(5)Yo U.
(2)Brian G.
(4)Sonya X.
(3)Jamie K.
(3)Jimmy W.
Best chicken ever! There is no comparison. I want "1/2 white with mild sauce" to be my last meal so I can die happy. 5 STARS!
(5)laela l.
(5)Cathy H.
(4)Patrick M.
food is great, the mild sauce is awesome as well takes a long time tho, so call ahead. I think it tastes better the next day cold right out of the fridge, so buy xtra i heard they deliver now too, sweet!
(4)Sarah V.
(4)Dan E.

(5)Vickie L.
(4)Sharlene K.

Delicious liver and wing combo!
(4)Sarah S.

(4)Katrina H.
(4)Michael W.

(4)Bill J.
The chicken strips with fries and hot sauce are the way to go. Steer clear of the perch. This place is 1000x better than Milwood. Anybody else notice Milwood has resorted to selling $2 bud lights? That place sucks, Harold's is a lot better.
(2)Kevin Y.
I love this place. It makes me happy. And it's not just the chicken, which you can see from the other reviews is very good, but the fried catfish with the hot sauce is by far the best catfish I've ever had. My girlfriend doesn't even like catfish and she loves this stuff.
(4)Reyna H.
(5)Joshua C.
Don't walk in here expecting something you know you aren't going to find. Deep fried food, made to order. The 6 piece wing meal with hot sauce on the side is what I always get. Chicken is juicy and tender, fries are average, and the two pieces of bread are a welcome addition. Give it a shot
(3)Ron R.
Its Harolds, what else is there to say? Im glad I dont have to go out south anymore but its not as good as the one on 87th...and whats up w/ closing so early? Harolds isnt supposed to close before 12
(4)JASON c.
love fresh chicken and i love fresh fries just wish there where more fries n ur can pop cost to much
(5)Ryan C.
(3)Ted b.
(4)Jonathan C.
(4)Ben E.
(3)Jamie G.
The chicken is freshly fried, which is definitely something you won't see at KFC. The fries are slightly below average, but still good. Oddly, or maybe it makes sense, the piece of chicken grease-drenched Wonder bread is quite delicious.
(4)Zoran D.
I really like their chicken. Nice size pieces. Full a flavor and juicy. I only wish there was a location a little closer to Norwood Park so I don't have to dirve for some tasty chicken. It's still worth the drive. If you want chicken, this is the place to go to.
(4)Brian T.
(4)Nina W.
(3)Alex R.
idk if its the fact that i am not a fried chicken aficionado or just the high expecations, but i harolds didn't blow me out of the water. my chicken was good, but nothing i hadn't had before. i think i liked the catfish better than the chicken.
(3)Mark B.
fried chicken done right. love this place for the additional sides.
(5)PJ Mc J.
(5)Bill B.
Went to Harold's chicken shipped through the Wicker Park sidewalk food tour the chicken probably is the best fried chicken I've ever had crisp light the sauce was not too spicy not too sweet it was actually perfect.
(5)Chandra O.
(4)Ka L.
(4)Irene G.
(3)Allison R.
(4)Matt L.
(2)Khomari F.
(5)Sam G.
Tried Harolds for the first time the other day and now I see why everyone loves it! Delicious and fast delivery....ordered some for lunch later today because its so good :)
(5)Dylan Z.
(5)Jerome M.
(5)Robert A.
(3)Nate F.
(5)Elaine M.
(5)Britini R.
I'm drunk right now. And I am eating chicken. And I feel like my life is perfect. My hands are greasy and slightly covered in mild sauce. I am happy. I said that. Chicken is a great equalizer. 5 stars. Would chicken again.
(5)LJ W.
Had to go to Harold's while I was in the Chi. Ordered 12 wings mild sauce on the side. Wings remind me of Popeyes. 1-5=4. Mild Sauce 1-5=5.
(5)Sara P.
(4)Meghan D.
(5)Jacob G.
This review is for every Harold's Chicken Shack in general. Their fried chicken is so good. It's one of the best places to go for fried chicken in the Chicago area.
(4)Christine S.
1/2 white chicken with hot sauce... yes please! Takes about 10-15 mins per order but that's totally fine with me (ya know...since I like my food cooked). Pretty good chicken. Funny staff. I'd come back.
(3)Danny M.
Chicagos best Harolds Chicken. Ive been coming to this place for a couple of years. Their wings are the best, crispy not too greasy. Always get an 8 wing combo even if you don't finish it youll always want to eat it later.
(5)cleo X.

(4)Mykyta C.
Had to wait ridiculously long for my food even tho it's bomb and I love it but really guys 30 min wait?
(1)Mike H.
(2)Rix T.
(4)Larissa V.
(3)Lethe G.
Real great food just I recommend you call and place your order instead of waiting 20mins.
(5)Heather P.

#hellaYUMMS
(4)Ryan P.
(4)Joe K.
(3)Bert A.
Good food They could try make it a more comfortable waiting environment as well as have a better attitude.
(3)Damian P.
I LOVED IT.
(4)Reuben H.
(3)Kathleen C.
