Chinese Cuisine
The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.
Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.
There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.

New to the area. A block away from my place. Love it! Really good, staff is nice. All the food has really good flavor and tastes freshly made. Definitely recommend. updated review- i ordered the smoothy with tapioca and the tapioca was hard. sent it back twice and the third time, i just gave up. gross! 4 starts to two. what a fail.

I don't understand the negative reviews of this restaurant. I've eaten here dozens of times, had many different dishes: beef, chicken, rice, vegetables, and they have all been great! Prices are great, service is fast and friendly and the portions are huge. Heck, even all the Chicago PD eat there! Wish there were others like this in the neighborhood!

I've eaten here dozens of times, usually takeout and it has always been good. Huge portions, cheap prices, consistent flavors. Not a fan of their sweet and sour but honestly all the other dishes I've had have been pretty fabulous. I agree that the service when you dine in isn't great but not many Chinese places are. I don't live in Chicago anymore and miss the days when I could pick up some Happiness on the way home from work...

This is has become my favorite place for Chinese food! I actually drive past the more touristy "Chinatown" to eat here. The servings are plentiful, service is fast, and the staff friendly. Their lunch specials give a good bang for your buck. The only reason I didn't give them 5 stars is because of the facility itself. It needs a bit more updating and atmosphere (IMHO). Definitely check this place out!
(5)Christine E.
This is my favorite Chinese place in the neighborhood! The food is always yummy and hot. The veggies (especially the broccoli) always looks fresh. My personal faves are the Orange Chicken and Kung Bao Chicken. You can order via phone or online for pickup or delivery. When you order via phone for pickup, they usually tell you 10-15 minutes which is awesome because I am usually starving! The place is nothing special to look at on the inside, the there is ample seating if you want a casual dinner.

I have had the place a few times with some of my Coworkers as a Delivery so today was the first time that I was about to do a walk in to place my order. The Dining room area was nice and clean the 2 ladies at the front counter was Pleasant. I order the pot stickers and then I place another order. Lunch special for later today (veggie egg foo Young with a egg roll and fried rice) When I got home I did try my food and my rice was a little cold. Other then that my food was OK.
(2)Byron K.
I have lived down the street from them for a few years now. There serve, good, fresh reasonably priced Asian cuisine. Combination fried rice and bbq ribs are among my favorites. Nice friendly, family atmosphere. Lots of 9th District cops eat there, which is a good enough endorsement for me.
(4)Daniel S.
I must give this place credit, it was the first place ever that i can remember where i literally couldnt finish my plate, it was the bbq pork shanghai chow mein, and it was so biiiig, plus only like $8! Such a deal, good have fed 2, also got an egg roll which was solid, and a mango smoothie, which was ok, not one of my favorites, but they have a lot of good reasonable priced options so i am pretty sure i will be returning (i also literally live 50 feet away XD)

Ugh! I ate at Happiness with my family on September 17th 2011 let me tell you that I will never eat here again! My husband and I got very sick from the food we ate...my son, lucky for him, only had the chicken and rice soup, which by the way was not bad at all and I should have chosen that instead of the food I ordered. The portions are HUGE way too much food. Hubby and I could have shared one dish. The food was o.k., not great but o.k. The staff is not very friendly, no smiles, no personality whatsoever. Just plain business, take our order, serves, fill water, and get out They speak very loudly in Chinese in front of customers, which I think is rude The restaurant could use a good scrubbing Over all, price-wise,the bill we paid (under $30) was not bad but the unfriendly service, quality of food, and the aftermath of being ill for a day has me promising to never eat at Happiness again
(1)Jennifer H.
I've been going to this place since they've opened. The people there are so nice! The food is great was never disappointed. and delivery was quick and friendly. I would recommend it to all my friends!!!
(5)Lindsay A.
I had to give this place 2 stars because while the food is pretty awful, its not completely tasteless and their lunch deal gives you a hefty helping of food. If your starving and need a lot of food and are willing to sacrifice quality for quantity, this is your spot!
(2)Jamie L.
I question some of the people who wrote these previous negative reviews. One reviewer is complaining that the restaurant gave way too much food. Since when has that ever been a bad thing that a restaurant gives good portions? That same reviewer also complained that the place could use a good scrubbing. It just got renovated!!! I've been in there and the place looks clean; has this person ever been to a restaurant in Chinatown!? This person seriously has no idea what she's talking about and has no credibility. On to the food. This place seriously has the best crab rangoon I've ever had. The ma-pa-tofu was tasty and the orange chicken was amazing. This place has tasty food, gives large portions and is affordable. What more can you honestly ask for?
(5)Sherelle G.
Not happy. YUCK Red sweet and sour sauce is never good. The few veggies at the bottom of box were tough to chew. The chicken was odd shaped and random sizes., some hard and crunchy. Never again.
(1)Love L.
I came here for take out a couple of times. It was recommended by the locals. I ordered the orange chicken and it is very delicious. Very fast service. I totally want to go back. The mango smoothie is totally delish!
(5)Dawn D.
We LOVE Happiness! It's only a couple of blocks from our house and it's affordable. The food is as good as any Chinese American Food I have ever eaten in Chinatown an dthe prices are better. When we dine in ...the place is clean and the service is good. Thanks Happiness for making us Happy!
(4)Vanesa B.
Got sick off their food. Really sick.
(1)Yuan Z.
I honestly don't understand why they are still in business. I've came here about 10 times ONLY because it is close to where I work, but I promised myself I won't go back anymore. I haven't wrote a review because I usually don't write reviews, especially negative ones, but I honestly dislike this restaurant with a passion. What pushed me to write a review: They have lunch specials (which cost $7 after tax, the norm is $5 for other places). They let you choose egg rolls or BBQ pork as an extra with w/e lunch special you order. I like their BBQ pork over the egg roll, but they always put the BBQ pork in the rice box (with a lot of BBQ sauce), and the BBQ sauce mixes with the lunch special dish. The sauces mix into an awkward salty yet sweet taste which I really don't like. Knowing that, I asked them to separate the BBQ pork from the lunch special and put it in its own container. To my disbelief, they said they can't do that. I paused for a second thinking there might have been some miscommunication, so I explained to them how the sauces mixing makes the lunch special taste weird. They said they understand, but they can't separate them, and recommended me to just have the egg roll instead. I asked why not, they said they don't know, but they just can't do it. This is what pushed me over the edge with them. Only explanation I can think of is that they're trying to save some rice boxes? Needless to say, no more Happiness for me! Food: I have tried 10+ different dishes from them (mostly rice box) and the ONLY one that I actually think is decent is the Mapo Tofu. All the other ones I've tried are garbage. They are 100% Americanized Chinese food. They give you a ridiculous amount of sauce with anything dish that requires sauce. So much sauce that you'd think you ordered some sort of stew/soup. If you order Beef and Broccoli over rice, you'd get Beef and Broccoli stew. It's just disgusting. I personally like traditional Chinese food, but you may like the extra sauce. They are CHEAP: Don't be fooled by the sauce, the actual food content they give you is sparse for the price. Everywhere else, the lunch specials are in the range of $4 - $5.50, this place is $7. Their regular rice boxes (which are about $5-6) are the small cube paper ones that is about half the size of a normal rice box that cost the same. And if you want to order the normal sized rice box, it's $9-11 (once again, it's $5 elsewhere). In addition, they are the ONLY Chinese restaurant I have ever seen that actually CHARGES you for TEA! On their menu, front and center, says "Additional $1.00 for pot of tea". I laughed pretty hard when I saw that. Anywhere else they give you a pot of tea just like how American restaurants serve water. You can tell from some restaurants the the owners are skimpy out on content while emptying customers' pockets. Service: Their service is slightly above average for a Chinese restaurant. Their front desk girls are underage (probably daughters), and they don't usually show any emotions. Kind of just a blank face taking your orders. Conclusion: What else can I say? This place simply sucks. I think I've been pretty unbiased towards them, it's just that I never actually got a good experience from this place. I'm theorizing that the only reason they are still in business is because they are the only Americanized Chinese "restaurant" in the neighborhood. There are some other Americanized Chinese places around there, but they are more of a "Pick up to go rice box" joints, no waitresses. Potsticker House is the only Chinese restaurant with waitresses, but they are traditional Chinese and not Americanized.

The food here is just "ok". It's an average chinese restaurant.. nothing spectacular. Oh, but I do have to give them credit for their won ton soup... yumm! I've never eaten at the restaurant, but when I do place an order over the phone and provide my phone number to the guy.. I have to wait about 5 seconds before giving him the next digit of my phone number (i.e.: 7 (5 sec), 7 (5 sec), 3 (5 sec). THEN, once I get there to pick up my food, he'll verify the order by asking for your phone number. I whisper my phone number to him.. then he repeats it very very loud for the entire restaurant to hear. LOL. This guy cracks me up.. and it happens every time. When you place the order for delivery, they get to your door... call you on your phone, then say, "We deliva". So I of course, try to clarify it by asking, "are you here?" Then he responds with, "we deliva" again.

i love the potsickers at this place, but I have never had any other food from this restaurant, and it was a friend who brought the potstickers to me last night and I thought they were really good.
(3)Marie S.
Im surprised at the low reviews... this is my tried and true restaurant for Chinese takeout for years. Nothing fancy or trendy, just good Chinese food that makes you want to eat until youre so stuffed you cant eat anymore. Pros: My favs have been shrimp egg foo yung (they've made me a believer), hunan shrimp, sweet and sour chicken, potstickers Cons: Dont care for their noodle dishes
(4)Emily N.
I just dont understand why this place doesn't have higher reviews. The food here is awesome! I had the orange chicken. Some of the best ever. I admit, I would prefer it a bit spicier but I've been told that my obsession with spicy food is over the top. So here's a little story. Last week, the boyfriend and I are trying to decide on dinner. Finally I say I'll just pick up some chinese on the way to your place. Minutes after hanging up the phone, I regret the decision because now I don't want chinese anymore. Oh well, I'll just eat it, cuz its easier than going through another half hour conversation about dinner. I call in my order for pickup. The minute I walk in, I'm so glad I called for chinese. It smells great and it's ready 5 mins early. Nice. And it was delish as always. Not to mention we both ate for under $15 bucks
(4)Mando T.
I loved this place for years, spent literally $70.00 here a month ordering delivery. The last few times I ordered, it seems they can't make up their mind on additional charges. I usually order a dish with extra meat. I always got charged $3.00. Today a woman tells me its $9.00. Really $9 additional on a $6.00 dish? When I questioned that, she basically tried to say I was a liar. This is after I gave her my number and she pulled up my address. Pretty sure you could see I'm a regular... I have receipts here where I'm always charged between 3-4 bucks additional. Now they want to be rude and try to come across like I'm trying to pull a fast one? When I asked her to confirm the charges, she huffed and hung up on me. There are WAY to many good chinese restaurants in Chicago to have to put up with someone talking down to you & acting like that. Maybe they do well and don't need to treat their customers respectfully, who knows. All I know is I will never spend another penny here.
(1)David L.
Ridiculously huge portions at great prices. The fried rice needs some things added to it, like carrots, peas, etc. The bbq pork can be a little tough. All in all, this is a good place. Here's a photo of the take-out sesame chicken lunch special I ordered earlier today. This is a lunch special--one of their smaller portioned, lower priced (less than seven bucks before tax) items. I don't know whether I'm supposed to eat it or move into it (and I mean that as a compliment).
(4)Michael R.
I have been going to Happiness for years. I have delivered from them and even went and eaten inside their restaurant. It is nothing fancy but the food is delicious. Our favorite is the orange chicken and my wife loves the shrimp kow. I love their crab rangoons, beef and brocolli..... just about everything I have tried form them is great. They have smoothies too. For the people on here with bad reviews, they must seriously be uptight. This is not ruth chris's where I would expect a smile and 5 star service. It is a hole in the wall dive chinese spot. I expect to be able to give my order, and get great tasting food in return. That's it. If you want a smile and all the other shit, go to P.F. Changs and pay for all that. This is a cheap chinese food place ran by people with limited skills. Don't let that shy you away from this place, it is amazing.
(5)Jorgen R.
This restaurant was lacking in both atmosphere and flavor. I ordered the cashew chicken and the honey chicken. The cashew dish tasted like a poorly made pot pie filling. The honey chicken was drenched in an overly sweet pink sauce that seemed more akin to sweet and sour than any other honey chicken I've had. I liked that it was close and local, and the food came quickly. But that did not overcome the negative marks in food and overall feel. I likely won't be coming here again.
(2)Romelle N.
Don't waste your money on the sweet-and-sour shrimp! Dried petrified barely there shrimp!
(1)Jon C.
I must say since I have moved back to the neighborhood over four years ago they quickly became one of my favorite Chinese places. They have the best egg rolls, Crab Rangoon, and General Tso's Chicken. Steamed pot stickers are awesome too. I'm so close to China Town and prefer this food.
(5)Laura I.
My husband used to work near here and would regularly order lunch take out from here (Egg fu Young or General two & egg roll). We also started ordering from here on occasion for home delivery. Their food is consistently great and yummy! You can't go wrong with this place. They go above and beyond with service, quality and friendliness. We recently moved a little outside their normal delivery zone but don't mind paying the little extra for delivery. They are far superior to any chinese food place in our neighborhood in taylor/st./pilsen. I have also been there for dine-in and it's nothing fancy but makes do for a quaint place to grab a casual meal if you want to dine out.
(5)Paul M.
Good food, good prices, very friendly and courteous staff. I visit here at least once or twice a week
(5)Robert S.
My office isn't too far from this place and we've ordered from here a few times. I've ordered something different every time (e.g. sweet & sour shrimp, kung pao chicken, shrimp w/ broccoli) and all of it has been just ok. Given how close this place is to Chinatown, I don't know why anyone would choose it over a number of much better places.
(2)Diana G.
Have you ever sat down to eat and such high hopes and high expectations and then you try your soup, you taste a few bites of the fried chicken dumplings and you are in a bad place emotionally after indulging? Why is this sub par fake Chinese restaurant getting such high reviews? I have been to some of the BEST Chinese restaurants in China town in San Franciso, China town in Chicago and in New York city where you can actually enjoy authentic Chinese freshly prepared dim sum without the grease. Here they don't even bring you out chopsticks unless you ask for them. When I asked for a few slices of fresh lemons to go with my water she brought me out two measly slices that looked bad. Honestly it's a bunch of cheap ingredients and a lot of food but the taste is truly awful. I brought home some for my pets for tomorrow because after some of the noodles and tiny shreds of chicken I had my fill. I ordered a large bowl of chicken noodle soup but the broth was not prepared well it was just so so and the chicken slices were miniscule. What upset me was the price. I expected to pay a certain price for each item I ordered but apparently I ordered from an "old" menu and they changed their pricing system to at least $3.00 more per each item. I tried their chocolate smoothie but it tasted more like a slushy to me and very sugary. If you were to go to a more authentic Chinese restaurant food is prepared with more delicate ingredients and the last time I had authentic Chinese food it was Peking Duck with the best broth but this place was horrible. I guess the people who reviewed this restaurant and gave it such high ratings have not tasted true Chinese delicacies but I have and I was very disappointed with the taste of my dinner and the high cost. A good and honest restaurant won't do a "bait and switch" with you. Your bill should not be an UNHAPPY surprise but this bill of $15.00 or more dollars was not worth the price. If you are a picky eater like me don't waste your time here it's about QUANTITY of food and definitely not the Quality and or taste or authenticity of the true Chinese culture...Well prepared Chinese food is supposed to be HEALTHY for you but all I saw on the menu was FRIED and GREASY. MSG, Grease, heavy on sugar WHAT MORE can you ask for right?
(1)Roland S.
NEVER ORDERING FROM HERE AGAIN. Lo Mein is a particular kind of dish, anyone who has had it knows that the noodles are thick and very flavorful. THEY GAVE ME RAMEN NOODLES. I could've just gone and bought a cup of that garbage at a 7 eleven. and I'm positive the chicken isn't even chicken, or they are just overcooking it because its TERRIBLE. this is NOT authentic Chinese food. if I could give 0 stars I would. screw this place.
(1)R W.
After seeing favorable reviews about the restaurant, I decided to order some food. First problem, I had to call back several times to place order. I received a record message to call. Second, after placing order and waiting over an hour, the delivery driver calls and tells me that he is in the lobby. I gave him the bell code and he refused to come up. So, I was upset and said to myself "I just will not give him a tip." When I went to the lobby the delivery guy was across the street and expected me to go outside the building and cross the street to get the food. Finally, I returned to my apartment and called the restaurant and refused the food. Happiness might have good food (That I was unable to try.) but the delivery service get an F for service.
(1)Yesy D.
The restaurant isn't much of a looker and the service is not the greatest but it's not the worst either. The food is your usual Chinese restaurant fare. It is better than a lot, plus their portions are pretty big. We are definitely frequent costumers because we always leave satisfied. Do try their Happiness noodles it is very delicious!
(4)Sandra M.
I'm surprised at the negative reviews. Although we are not far from Chinatown, we prefer this place over most places in Chinatown. Their combination "George" fried rice is a favorite, as is the Mongolian Beef. The portios are huge...the lids on the containers are never closed becuase of how full they fill them. The staff is very friendly and you can get 5% off your order if you order online! We've also had them deliver and they are quick and very couteous.
(4)Region R.
This place gets a bad rap because it's close to Chinatown, but this is my favorite American-style Chinese place of all. Their hot & sour soup is AMAZING, as is their fish filet with ginger. They're also always very friendly behind the counter!
(5)Miguel H.
First time I actually sat down to eat here and I found a screw in my shrimp fried rice! That's right a rusty screw!!!!!!! Last time I'll EVER eat there.
(1)Stephanie R.
This place never disappoints, the food is always hot and fresh and delivery is very fast.
(5)Peg P.
Favorite neighborhood place. Really enjoy the egg rolls and my new favorite "Scallops, Shrimp, and Mushroom Combo. Lots of sea food and very tasty.
(4)Lisa L.
I will never order from this place again. Aside from being a little pricey they are rude and disrespectful. i ordered $60 worth of food for delivery, i was charged $3 for delivery and when the driver arrived i gave him $63 and he looked at me shaking his head telling me that why i wasnt giving him any tip and that i was cheap and he said that his boss didnt pay him delivery and i should tip him. All this was said to me while I had clients in my business and he walked away shaking his head. I called the restaurant to let them know what happened and all she said was "Ok thank you and hung up". Food wasnt great and i will never recomend this place EVER!
(1)Claudia S.
My BF and I LOVE Happiness! I recommend the BBQ Pork (appetizer), orange chicken, BBQ Pork fried rice and pot stickers! Nice people work there! The smoothies are good! :D I recommend going during lunch if your on a budget, they offer awesome deals, perfect lunch specials. They serve a good amount of food so it can feed two adults and a child. Depending you know? haha give it a try! I did and loved it! :)
(5)Hope Z.
Decent enough food The smoothies are worth the delivery. seriously. best smoothies ever. they may be putting crack in the smoothies. they are so addicting.
(4)Sarah S.
I go here mostly cause the lunch specials are super good and cheap. I usually go there with my cop buddies and order a bunch of options and we all share. My favs are the mongolian beef.. there will spice it to you order (I get extra spicy) and I love the BBQ pork and any of their soups are delicious. Their veggie egg foo young is really good also.. I usually scrape some gravy off of it, but other then that its awesome. I get white rice, but the fried rice seems popular also. Their smoothies are great... so all in all you can have a very good meal for a very fair price.
(4)Unknown K.
Why is it so hard to find a Chinese place that delivers? Oh wait, they do deliver - perhaps I should have been more specific. A Chinese place that tastes good that delivers. We ordered rather basic dishes. Everything was so drenched in sauces that it was more like soup. Bland food as well. The only good thing was that it was ridiculously cheap - if you have a lot of drunk people to feed over, you might consider ordering from here.
(2)Don S.
Not happy! ;) I've eaten here before always pleased. Called an order in for chicken teriyaki with broccoli. I was told about 10 minutes. The order ended up taking 20 minutes and it wasn't the right order. It looked nothing like how it had before neither did it match the description and picture. It had chicken, broccoli, carrots and onions. I can't do onions. I asked is this your chicken teriyaki? Then they looked at each other and said " yes chicken teriyaki, broccoli, carrots and onions." I said where is the teriyaki?.... Won't go Back at least if you mess up an order try to fix it. Also don't sell chicken with mixed vegetables as chicken teriyaki. So ignorant that you think I would't know.
(1)Joanne B.
The rudest people over the phone, for one they need a website so you wouldn't have to ask them over the phone about lunch specials! I can tell she gets aggravated and raises her voice because she doesn't speak much English. Well they should hire someone who can take orders over the phone so it can make their job easier! So aggravating when I know this place has potential their food is decent for Chinese food, but definitely needs to hire more pleasant kinder people for phone orders!
(1)Fabi A.
I love this restaurant. Me & my fiancé order from here a few times a month. We live about 10 mins from the restaurant, I'm sure more with traffic & they always deliver to us in a timely manner. Our order is always correct & freshly hot.
(5)S T.
Some coworkers order lunch from this place occasionally. It has NEVER looked appetizing. For some reason I still decided to try it once when they ordered. This is some of the worst chinese food i've ever had. every single dish was brown. everything brown. i had a rice and vegetable dish and it was completely tasteless. I had asked over the phone if the vegetable rolls were vegetarian and they said yes. I don't know if they gave me the wrong rolls or what but mine had shrimp in it. if you're like my coworkers and aren't very adventurous with your pallet, you might enjoy this place as they do.
(1)Rebecca F.
$30 delivery fed two of us for two BIG meals. Great General Tsao's Chicken. Great Hong Sue Shrimp. Very tasty crab wonton. We live close by, but the food arrived in, no joke, 13 minutes! Polite person took my phone order and everything we were expecting arrived piping hot.
(5)Van C.
Scallops and shrimp with black bean and garlic sauce is to die for! Make it spicy for the extra kick and flavor. This place definitely does not disappoint!
(5)Marcin K.
I am a huge fan of getting the most bang for the buck. This place always delivers on that. I have a few options closer to me by McKinley Park, but I do not mind heading out to Bridgeport for the mongolian beef lunch special, which is enough to usually feed two. Great place when you are looking for that greasy comfort Chinese food, although the menu is extensive enough to satisfy all tastes. Place might not be big enough to host large parties around lunch, considering that all the beighborhood cops eat there, but the service is pretty quick and the atmosphere very relaxed.
(5)
