(Based on multiple carry-out experiences only.) I absolutely love Hanami for its fresh sushi. I often get the Tuna Martini since it's so yummy/addictive, in addition to various sashimis and a roll (I'm a sushi pig, bless them for giving me the benefit of the doubt and always including chopsticks for two). Service is friendly and fish is fresh and flavorful, not bland. As far as neighborhood sushi joints for high quality carry out or delivery, this is it. You can order online via GrubHub, which makes it super easy and thus a problem for sushi addicts who live around the corner. I have yet to dine-in.

After our fourth lovely meal from Hanami I thought they deserved a few nice words. All of our meals have been delivered until tonight's when I visited the restaurant for the first time for carry-out. I had to wait a few minutes for the order to be packaged. I was greeted with genuine warmth and kindness. Was offered a seat and a cup of delicious hot green tea with roasted grains floating on the surface was placed in front of me. On a cold and rainy night this was awfully nice. I am a working musician and can rarely afford to splurge on sushi but because of my profession I have eaten sushi all over the world. The sushi I've had from Hanami has been very very good. Well prepared, fresh, creative yet unpretentious. Attention to small details is apparent. The miso soup, often an afterthought at many US sushi restaurants, has the perfect amount of hondashi, wakame and tofu. Can't wait to go back.

This is a great, quiet, neighborhood spot that is BYOB.

Some of the best sushi we've had in Chicago. They kept bringing our large party free things (edamame, some drink I can't remember), which was awesome. We loved every single roll we ordered. Usually there is one or two people think are ok, but every one was great. Two weird things: as other people mentioned, this place was empty. We couldn't understand this because the food was so amazing and the service was great. The 2nd thing was that is smelled REALLY bad. So that might be the problem? But no one else mentioned this, so it could be a weird, one off situation. We all agreed we would give it one more try to make sure it was just a random problem, but that we would definitely do carry out / delivery. 10/365

Hanami has catered 2 of my parties and the food was fantastic! Everyone raved and I have never seen people go back for so many more tastings! As always the food at the restaurant is great and I also do takeout all the time! The tuna martini, passion on fire, mr right, volcano, cucumber salad and the teriyaki rib eye are fantastic.

I called for a delivery order and spoke with Sam. I didn't have a menu, their website menu wasn't working, however, I did find them on GrubHub. GH's menu was minimalist and Sam was most gracious in suggesting maki rolls based on my preferred tastes. I ended up ordering salmon, mackerel and yellow-tail sashimi (two pcs per order) and one of their signature rolls, Passion on Fire. The sashimi slices were slightly larger than what I would expect on rice as nigiri, yet much smaller than I've been served elsewhere. The salmon and yellowtail were as fresh tasting as could be. The mackerel was just a bit over-the-top preserved and tasted more like pickled herring. The Passion on Fire roll is described as shrimp tempura inside salmon, super white tuna on top, served with chef's special sauce with a sprinkle of tobiko and green onion. And to me, the shrimp was sweet and plump, the sauce and garnish combo was delicious, however, the salmon and superwhite tuna were mere shavings. Overall, they fit together well in theory yet I would have enjoyed it more if the salmon and w.tuna pieces were thicker and distinct in flavor. 3.5 stars would have been 5 had I felt the portions matched the pricing. I'm grateful that Sam included a comp order of edamame to fill the void for a more satisfying light meal. I bumped my rating up to 4 for great service and a speedy delivery. I really want to give this place an ELEVEN...their unique menu is just one better than most, I'll give Hanami an in-house visit, with a Yelp or Groupon discount deal, to get the full experience of the house instead of a late night delivery and will post an update if there's a significant difference.

Notably good special maki rolls and great service.

I went there for dinner last Friday with my brother and sister in law and overall had a really great meal. I was a little worried when we got there and there were only two other tables filled, but it worked to our advantage because we were stay and order a couple rolls at a time without ever feeling rushed (and more tables filled throughout the night). We had the Snow balls, beef negi maki, crunchy spicy tuna, tiffany roll, and volcano roll - everything was awesome. The service was super friendly, attentive and fast and it's BYOB which is definitely a plus.
(5)Valreyrib ..
Very good. It is just small and kind of cold because it is an all window storefront. Fresh and innovative. Good combo of ingredients for creative rolls, without overdoing it. One of the best sushi rolls I've had in general is here, snowball roll. You have to get that!

It was late on a Friday afternoon....one of those days when you are exhausted from a long work week and you don't feel like cooking. I asked my sister if she know any places in the neighborhood where we could grab dinner and is in the inexpensive range. She suggested we try this place. "I do warn you, every time I walk by there, it's either closed or no one is in there." Whatever, we weren't desperate for food; we both were just lazy to cook. Sure enough, when we arrived there was not a soul in the place. We got seated and proceeded to order. The menu is pretty standard for a sushi place: various soups, rolls, and maki. She ended up ordering the California & sweet potato roll; I tried two of the sea scallops roll (cause I'm a fan of scallops). Supplemented the order with a large ramen bowl. The rolls that we ordered came out to be just the right size. Both of us tasted pieces of each other's order; I liked her rolls better than mine! The soup was tasty; overall the dinner just was filling enough. I was disappointed because in one of the earlier reviews they said that they got free edamame with their dinner; but we still received free mochi for dessert. Sweet! Since we were the only people there (although another group came in later as we finished our dinner), it's no surprise that our order came out pretty quick. The waitress was attentive as well. I have yet to try the other two sushi places directly across the street; but if/when I do they have high expectations to live up to.

We finally were able to dine in at the restaurant last weekend. Again, my husband and I were blown away with how good everything was. We both agree now that Hanami makes the best sushi in Chicago. (And we've eaten at a lot of sushi restaurants.) Everything we ate was delicious, and we couldn't get enough. They gave us free edamame and cucumber salad, which had their yummy tempura crumbs and special sauce on top. We've never tasted a cucumber salad like that. My husband doesn't even like cucumbers, and at first he didn't know that they were in there, but he loved it. The only thing that bothered us about this place is that it was empty. We could not figure out why no one was in there on a Saturday night when their food is SO good. We're thinking it's because they're still a new restaurant. Well, that's why I had to update my review, so more people will go there! They need more business! If you want fantastic sushi with amazing flavor that melts in your mouth, you must try Hanami. We can't wait to go there again.

Hanami is our go to sushi place in the area. We eat it about once a week. We dine in, pick up and order take out. All three ordering options are quick and efficient. Hanami has a beautiful dining room and delicious food. The sushi is amazing! My friend and I recently had a leisurely dinner here and left feeling like we had been at a spa.
(5)Jess T.
Delicious sushi place! My server was very nice and polite. Loved the complimentary edamame. I got free miso soup for checking in with Yelp, which was tasty and a good portion. Got the Chicago roll which was delicious and fresh. The environment is pleasant and the decor is fairly classy. Would've given 5 stars but the rolls are on the pricy side for everyday, but I can't wait to go for a nice dinner again sometime!

There is not one bad thing I can say about this Japanese restaurant. The food is delicious and fresh. The ambience is cute and quaint and the service is outstanding. The prices are reasonable and they have BYOB. Haven't had better Japanese food in North Center. The rolls were melt in your mouth delicious. I also had the Salmon Teriyaki which was to die for. The fish was cooked perfectly and the teriyaki sauce was so good I kept dipping my rice into it long after I finished my salmon. I have been there twice now and had the same server. He was attentive and helpful, even giving us a complimentary salad at the start of our meal. Definitely give this place a try. The food, value and service make it worth a trip!
(5)Angelica P.
Very nice staff. The place was empty when we went but the food was really good. They start you off with complimentary edamame, which is always a nice treat. The appetizer crispy sake is amazing. It's very unique and tastes great! The Mixer Maki, spicy tuna and spicy salmon were all very good too - tasted fresh
(5)Jeffrey S.
The rolls were creative, unique, original and visually appealing. The space is small, serene, modern and appealing. The staff is attentive and calm. I will definitely be going back soon.
(5)Lindsay W.
This order was absolutely unacceptable...For one we couldn't even see the fish amongst all of the rice in the tempura and crunchy spicy tuna. The fire in paradise smelt rancid and was more sauces than filling. The tropical tuna was LOADED with mayo even though it did not advertise that and I asked for none just to be safe. 67 dollars for our order and it looked like enough to feed a toddler. I could go on but I am sure the point has been made.
(1)Kelly W.
Went there for dinner and sat at sushi bar. I ordered chicken tereyaki it was tough no flavor rice was cold. We also ordered sashimi dinner. It came with no bowl of rice. When we asked for rice. They gave us cold rice. Service was bad they took forever to get the chicken. They forgot to flip it over on the sizzling plate. So bottom was burnt and sticking to plate. It was the worst sushi place I ever been too.
(1)Julia J.
Decent carry-out sushi! Hanami is a typical neighborhood sushi joint, but I found it to be much better than the Wasabi Cafe across the street. Prices were reasonable, the maki were good sizes and tasted fresh. We were quoted 20 minutes, the order was ready on time and didn't taste like it had been sitting out forever. Sold.

I came here alone spontaneously after my date for the night postponed our rendezvous (say what?! I know, right?!) because the Groupon redeemed notification is just as big of a thrill. I walked in and there were two people there, who then left, making me the only person in the entire restaurant. Awkward. First of all, there are two websites for this restaurant and two different online menus. I was looking at the fancier site and the wrong menu. I thought I knew what I wanted walking in, but instead had to read all the roll descriptions on the spot (stress!) and ordered some gyoza to give the staff something to do in the meantime. The server, by the way, was the cutest thing ever, saying "excuse me" every time she timidly approached. I decided on the crunchy shrimp roll and the hanami roll because I usually love any maki with shrimp tempura, eel, and avocado in it. After what seemed like a long wait, the gyoza came out, with the maki coming out right after. Ugh. I really wanted some time between the app and the rolls, but ok. I'll just take my time. 6 gyoza! They were tasty and perfectly toasted. Absolute enjoyment and I ate all 6 even though I knew I should have saved more room for the enormous rolls sitting in front of me. The hanami roll came in 10 pieces and the crunchy shrimp was in 8 pieces (if I remember which was which). The crunchy shrimp was not crunchy. The hanami was, because of the cucumber. Soggy tempura? Sad. Considering my history of maki eating, I should have known better than to order rolls with cream cheese, and unfortunately, both of these had it, but usually it's not so overwhelming and it works to tie the roll together. In this case, all that was left in my mouth was cream cheese- I actually had to clear my mouth of the gooey substance between each roll. The flavors of what I was eating never came through and if not for my wasabi infused soy sauce, I think I would have been eating particularly bland food. I ate more of the rolls than I wanted because I was shy to leave so much on the plate being the only person in the restaurant. At some point the waitress lit all the candles, which seemed like a waste of wax, and at another point a party of two walked in. They had an 'any 3 rolls for $30' special, but I'm glad I didn't waste the calories. There are so many great sushi places in the city that I won't be back to this one.
(2)David W.
I've only been here once and had a great experience. The Tonkotsu Ramen was super tasty, and the service was great. I will be coming back for sure.
(5)Hope H.
We ordered Tiffany maki and Hamachi Kama with miso soup for each of us. Tiffany maki had fresh taste with right amount of spiciness and sauce. However, I had to wait for my dish, Hamachi Kama ( grilled yellowtail collar) for almost 40 minutes. When my dish was served, it was a little undercooked and needed to be more seasoned. Their wait staff was very friendly but our waitress didn't recognize what hamachi Kama was when I ordered it. I will try this place at another time with a bottle of cold sake to give it a second chance, but I won't rush back.
(3)Rebecca L.
We came in on a very slow Monday night and had the whole place to ourselves. It's BYOB so we did. Service was very attentive, but not over-the-top. I got the Tonkotsu Ramen and my partner got the Mr. Right roll. The ramen was fine and met my need for a tasty bowl but didn't go above and beyond. The roll was really tasty: tuna, yellowtail, mango, avocado, cilantro and jalapeño. Yum! Prices were very reasonable. Music was a funny mismatch (upbeat pop) but it was not distracting :). We'd come back for a low key date night for sure!

I was super excited to try Hanami as it is right around the corner from my new apartment. My food arrived around 8:30 pm and by 3:00 am I was curled in a ball due to crippling stomach cramping. I crawled to my bathroom, proceeded to get sick and hung out there for a while as I felt too ill to crawl back and I knew I wasn't done. Somehow, I gathered up enough energy to stumble into work where I spent more time losing my cookies than I did getting any work done. I had to leave, buy some pedialite, get into bed and ride *it (food poisoning) out. I can't even begin to think about sushi again and I'm sad to say I will never give Hanami a a second chance.

We live in the neighborhood and have passed by Hanami many times. Well last minute my daughter and I decided to head out there and give it a try. Good idea that we did. The place is actually cozy when you walk in, not super big of an establishment but perfectly laid out. Appetizers: We ordered these fried rice balls called Lava stone. They were deep fried rice balls topped with scallions, tuna and tobiko. Very tasty combination twist. YUM Also ordered gyoza. Standard dish and done well and delicious. Maki: Here we go! We ordered 3 maki rolls as follows: 1. Mr. Right Maki: Yellowtail, tuna, mango, avocado, cilantro, jalapeno topped with white tuna. Holy moley delicious. It was ridiculously good!! 2. Hanami Maki: Unagi, shrimp tempura, crabmeat, cucumber, cream cheese, tobiko, avocado, topped with tempura, wasabi spicy mayo, eel sauce. Another solid yum! 3. Finally Volcano: not a standard volcano roll, this was 5 pieces consisting of Asparagus, avocado, jalapeno, masago and cucumber, topped with roasted spicy crab meat and squid. Tasty. Get this, it looked like finely shredded noodles on top of the roll but it was the crab meat and squid atop of the roll. The presentation of each maki was nicely done, the sushi was delicious, and the service was on point. Not too pushy and really easy going without rushing to get us out of the table. I was happy to have ventured in my neighborhood for some quality mom/daughter time alongside great sushi, nicely presented with friendly service to boot! will go there again OK go try them out, especially if you live in St. Ben's, North Center Area. YUM

I had a meeting here with a girl from my agency and it was really good! They have a great lunch special that was a nice deal. The sushi was the best I had in a while! The only downside is the service is a little but in the slow side! Nothing worth not coming back over but it took like 20 minutes to get our check. 5 star food, 3 star service.
(4)Christopher M.
Some of the better sushi in the city here. We've never had a bad roll, the place always has seats available, and it's BYOB. The perfect sushi place. 301/365
(5)Jaimee S.
Was craving a ramen, so we searched and found this lil gem! If I were hanging round this part of town I'd most certainly be back, that ramen was a 10/10. The service was also really, I got a family owned kinda vibe but I could be wrong. I wish I lived in the area as I would definitely be interested in trying to work my way through the menu.
(5)Scott H.
Went here the other day because I like trying out different sushi restaurants, and I'd already been to Wasabi across the street. It was a Saturday night and the place was completely empty. I was a little nervous that maybe this was a bad sign, but that wasn't at all the case. Our sushi was absolutely superb, and the service was great to boot! Not only did this place have lots of available seating, but the atmosphere was perfect for an intimate evening for 2. Next time you and your SO or group of friends don't have a place to go choose Hanami, and I promise you won't be disappointed. Added bonus: best 90s music EVER!
(4)Douglas B.
So wifey and I were looking for a BYOB Japanese restaurant nearby and came across Hanami. We figured we would give it a shot. As many have mentioned, its a pretty standard, semi-solid place. The place is cozy, it could be tidied up a bit more though. The waitress was very nice, it was pretty empty when we got there so she seated us right away. I think there was only one other couple there on a Friday night. We brought a bottle of wine and a few beers. The prices are very affordable, they even have specials. We started off with some seaweed and squid salad. Pretty standard, nothing spectacular, tastes like every seaweed squid salad I've had in the past. We also got some vegetable tempura.. again pretty straight forward. For our main entree, Wifey went with some maki, a spicy crunchy salmon and a salmon avocado. They are a little skimpy on the fish, you could barely see any fish. I went with the Tonkatsu Ramen it was on special. It was a very generous bowl and it was actually very tasty! I was pleasantly surprised, I was actually not expecting much as I have had some very disappointing ramen at a few places. The broth was good, the pork was flavorful.. the only criticism I guess would be that the noodles were all balled up and still a bit chewy, they seperated after a while and got a little softer, but the noodles could be better. We enjoyed our meal with wine and beer and went on our merry way... it was good.. nothing spectacular, but, i think would be back for a nice bowl of ramen with a few beers, probably not the sushi or maki.
(3)Selin S.
This place is cozy and neat. Service was quick and the waitress was so helpful. Passion on fire roll is a must to try which is delicious. I also liked flavoured calamari and broccoli that served with it. This place may not be the best sushi place but i m sure you ll feel comfortable and satisfied by the cheerful service:)
(4)Ellen A.
I'm updating my review because of a recent experience at Hanami. As my initial review states, I love this place, but my last order was mediocre at best. The sushi was falling apart, and the tonkatsu ramen was bland - The soup is usually full of rich broth and tender pork belly, but in the recent order the broth was tasteless and the pork was tough (and skimpy in terms of quantity). I'm bummed. This is my go-to takeout place, especially in winter, but with the increase in price for the ramen (from $9.00 to $11.00) and the decrease in quality (noted above), there's really no incentive to order from here.
(3)Douglas C.
Customer service was excellent. We were immediately greeted and the waiter was always there when we needed him. No wait to get a table. It is a BYOB place, so come prepared. The sushi was good. This would be a good place to grab a bite if you're looking for good service and small crowds (only 2 parties were there). There's better quality sushi out there though. The passion on fire was my favorite roll.
(3)Ted M.
Very good neighborhood Japanese which is clean w/ a nice menu of sushi, ramen, and other entrees. We had one of each and they were all very good. Highly recommend as the "go to" place if you live close by or as a destination for a Friday night or weekend lunch.
(4)Kevin F.
Decided kind of late on a Saturday to head out for a quick bowl of ramen and we left very impressed. My wife and I both ordered to tonkatsu ramen special ($8.99 for a giant bowl of ramen with pork, egg, scallion, and a hefty portion of noodles in a savory pork broth). And we had their "Snowball" app which is white tuna and unagi on a ball of sticky sushi rice - very tasty. And the BYOB policy resulted in a very tasty and cheap meal. Recommended for a low key, inexpensive, and delicious Japanese meal!
(5)Xiaowen D.
I really really like this place... The sushi is awesome., and the server took care of us very well. It was a wonderful meal that I ever had.
(5)Joanna T.
While this restaurant is usually pretty empty, I never understand why! The service is excellent. Wait staff is attentive, friendly and flexible. I always enjoy the fresh ingredients and fun spin on traditional Maki. I absolutely love the sesame salad as well!
(5)Philly G.
Good service. Had the seafood ramen which was yummy. Had to ask for some hot sauce which made it that much better. The mochi and ice cream dessert had an awesome presentation and definitely hit the spot without it being to sweet. We also had gyoza for appetizer which was your typical gyoza. The bill was so inexpensive for a date night for two. Would definitely go back if I'm in the mood for ramen again.
(4)Rob K.
Everything here is so good. Very fresh. Great lunch special. 2 rolls, ans miso soup for $9. I have also had the the snow white, excellent. They gave me the sesame green salad which I would normally never order. It was so good I want to buy the dressing to take home. The staff is also extremely friendly. I will definitely go back many times.
(5)Christine W.
This sushi place focuses on quality! Everything my husband and I ordered was delicious. Their specialty rolls were detailed and every bite was awesome. We also got a crispy salad, seaweed salad, and seafood udon. Everything was exceptional! I have not been here for lunch, but I always see specials. The only critique I have for this cute place is the loud top40 unedited rap music. The prices are a little steep as well but worth the quality that you get. We will be back!
(4)Meghan N.
Some of the best sushi I've had in a while. We ordered the Lava Stone, Snow Ball, Hanami Maki, and Sweet Potato Roll. The Lava Stone was amazing as well as the Hanami Maki. The Sweet Potato Roll was simple but good - how can you go wrong with tempura fried sweet potato ingredients? I must admit that I have had better sweet potato rolls in the past. The Snow Ball was good. The salmon on top had a smokey flavor I was not too fond of, but I'm just not a fan of smokey flavors in general. All in all, I am very glad that this is a nearby sushi place! I will be going back (or getting GrubHub to deliver it to me!)
(5)Ivana J.
This was a great place to eat my last meal of 2012. We came here for a "light" NYE dinner before going out but ended up leaving stuffed. I think where we went wrong was with appetizers. My friend and I ordered a seaweed salad and a special cucumber salad, both of which were HUGE. The seaweed salad was practically an entree and the special cucumber salad was smothered in sushi crunch (see the photo). The cucumber salad was certainly not what I was picturing, but was delicious nonetheless. We were also served edemame on the house, at which point we were regretting ordering two rolls each. I tried the salmon avocado and spicy salmon rolls. I prefer my salmon cut with a little more fat, but both rolls were good. And filling. They served mochi with our check. Delicious, but it really eliminated any chance of my taking advantage of the appetizers at our NYE party.
(4)Kate N.
Should be 4.5 stars, but since that's not an option, I'll round up. Hanami has very fresh fish that melts in your mouth and a great lunch special salmon don for only $12 - that's basically unheard of for places that deliver to me. Definitely recommend.
(5)Natalia R.
We went to Hanami for lunch today. The restaurant was empty. The server was very pleasant and the service was quick, we didn't have to wait at all I think. I had Hanami and miso soup, both delicious! For dessert, I had green tea ice cream - amazing! Will definitely come back. I really don't know why this place is empty most of the time I pass by...
(5)Sandy R.
Solid 4 star sushi. Perhaps my faith in Yelp has been restored. We got 4 rolls - two special maki and 2 standard rolls. The fish was fresh and everything tasted really good. We went mid-afternoon so it was pretty quiet which is fine by me. Street parking was easy and service was quite good.
(4)Chicago A.
Very friendly, and the sushi is well priced and fresh. I pick this over Wasabi Cafe across the street any day. Which is too bad, Wasabi used to be a favorite of mine until I had the all you can eat and the fish tasted OLD.
(4)Heather P.
At first glance, I was a bit nervous. The ambiance is interesting. It almost reminds me of a middle school play theater set. It's dark with red curtains offsetting a little nook in back. It is rather dark in there, not sure if that's to set the mood or hide some imperfections somewhere. When I arrived to meet my friend, there was no one else in the entire place except the guy rolling the sushi and the server who I imagine is also the owner. He was extremely attentive. Perhaps a bit too attentive, but who can blame him when we're the only ones in there. He came by twice because he said we called him over; which wasn't the case at all. A little odd, but it could be worse. I had the seaweed salad. Very yummy. My friend had the cucumber salad and it was like nothing I've ever seen. It was a glob of panko crumbs over a pile of something that may have included cucumbers and doused in a spicy mayo. It tasted good, but not at all what I was expecting. I had two rolls that were tasty but average. I wouldn't run out to return here, but with another groupon sure I'd come back.
(3)Bryan X.
It's hard to stand out in a city with so many sushi restaurant open and close all year long....... This would be a solid 3.5 star: The salmon sashimi is close to being as fresh as it can be. The scallop shooter is fun, but as many other sushi place, it was not done to make you like Waha..... The deco is warm with candles. The small restaurant quietly sitting in around a street corner. The service is very nice. You also receives FREE edamame , and Muchi cake for desert! What a nice touch to win over customers. I'd always keep in mind this lovely store is there if you need a quiet and good service Sushi Restaurant.....However I can't see myself come back with a long list of Sushi place to try in chi-town.......
(3)Ediwn A.
I did a late night order to have delivered to my home and delivery did come on time nice delivery man Sushi was good but the Hanami sushi was disappointing some ingredients inside was very over powering. I will try it again to see if anything else is good.
(3)Erica L.
Tried Hanami yesterday night after a long work week. Since I like to eat dinner early, I wasn't surprised that we were the first couple there on a Friday night. There were 4 servers standing around and after a few pauses, one of them finally invited us to pick any table. Our server was very nice and friendly, but definitely new to the job, which she told us up front. I had barely taken off my coat and pulled out the chair before she asked if we wanted any appetizers to start the meal. When we were actually ready to order, she was unfamiliar with the menu and took a while to take our orders. Then we waited. And waited. And waited. None of our food arrived until at least 30 minutes after we ordered. At least the sushi was decent, which was the only redeeming factor in our dining experience here. We started with the Yellowtail Sunomo, which was good. Then we waited for another 10-15 minutes until the rolls, nigiri, and hamachi kama arrived all together. Initially, we were missing a pair of ebi shrimp nigiri, but the server said they were still preparing it. I thought that was odd since I'm used to having all the sushi presented at the same time (or at least all the similar types of sushi in groups). Seriously, how long does it take to make ebi nigiri? The rolls were pretty good: we ordered the Spicy Crunchy Tuna and the Caterpillar. The best was the hamachi kama, which was tender, fell right off the bone, and was not over salted. By the end of the meal, our meter had already expired, and so had both of our patience and tolerance. At least the food was decent and the server remained enthusiastic, even when she was oblivious to what was going on. I'm disappointed given the higher ratings. If we ever try this place again, perhaps we'll order takeout; it'll probably take just as long if not longer to get the food!
(2)Jack B.
Great sushi. Tried the spicy tuna, ramen, yellow tail, gyoza and a few of their specialty rolls. They were all really good. The place is a quieter restaurant, at least when we were there. Sam gives excellent service.
(5)Tam D.
Just had the most disappointing meal at my (former) favorite ramen place. When the waitress came to take our money, I explained that the Tonkatsu ramen--my favorite, which I've had literally dozens of times there--was terrible today. There was no spice to it, no sesame oil, it came to us lukewarm, and worst of all, my friend's soup had a bunch of pieces of inedible gristle in it. Gross. The waitress, who struggled to understand, said "OK, OK, let me tell my chief" (that's not a typo--she called the chef her chief). She comes back and says, "The chief wants to know what was wrong with the soup." So I start over: No spice, no sesame oil, no warmth, heavy on the gristle. She says, OK, OK. And walks away. And that's it. If it were my business, I would have made it right. Worst of all: this ramen is ALWAYS on special for $8.99. But today, it was full price ($11.99). So I paid extra for extra gross ramen. Hope it was a fluke.

While driving back home I saw a grand opening sign for sushi and that's all it took to visit Hanami on their second day of being open. So this place is where T Spot used to be and honestly I was surprised with the another sushi restaurant opening here considering Wasabi is pretty much across the street. Service: Well, I talked to Sam who I think is at least a partial owner of this restaurant and he was very cordial. Since it was only their second day open, I did get paid close attention to, especially sitting at the sushi bar. Decor: It's nice... Pretty much your usual new, hip style look with the exposed brick wall and also the black painted walls. The chairs and tables were new (found out talking to Sam) and everything fits together. Of course, you can't just have good service without at least decent food... Things I got were: Cucumber salad: Given to me to try complimentary and it tasted fine. Pretty standard. Edamame: Given complementary. Same comment as the cucumber salad. It's edamame... Salmon and saba sashimi: The fish is fresh. The cuts were on the generous side. With the saba I got three small pieces for my order. The saba tasted like it was pickled differently than other places, but was good although served what seemed a little warmer than room temperature. Spicy scallop roll: It was fine. Not spicy... it tasted fine though. Red fire maki: One of Hanami's signature makis. It was pretty spicy. I thought it was a bit too sweet though with the sweet chili sauce. I would attribute this to the sushi chef drizzling the sauce straight from the bottle instead of like a squeeze bottle or something. I liked the fresh jalapeno on top as it is a nice touch. Strawberry mochi: Another complementary item for me. It was one strawberry mochi split into 4 pieces. Overall, you can tell this a new place. I am giving Hanami a 4 (rounding up) as nothing was bad here. I actually enjoyed how I was treated and can see this place as a nice addition to the North Center neighborhood. Hanami definitely has the potential. I will definitely come back to try again and update.

Delicious, by far the best sushi in North Center. We arrived on a Friday night around 6pm, maybe a couple tables were full. By the time we left at 8pm, the place was packed. I was happy to see others are enjoying this new spot! The food - we started with the Crispy Sake appetizer. It was so delicious, I literally thought about it first thing the next morning. We also had the Snowball app and three different rolls. All were fresh, inventive and so yummy! The service - fine, if not a little cold. But, attentive and not too hurried. The space - it's a dark, modern space and would be great for a date night. However, the music was really young and goofy. We're in North Center, not near DePaul or some hip spot in River North. I think they need to know that their diners are a bit more sophisticated than that. Also, there were a few randomly placed Yankee Candles burning - not appetizing at all. In fact, my husband asked to move away from a table that had one burning. No need for it. Overall - food A+ Ambiance - C

I'm a big fan of this place and am surprised it has not gained a following. The sushi is amazing. It is a lot better than the more common sushi locations in the city. More specifically the Passion on Fire, Mr. Right, and Volcano rolls are as good as it gets. It is BYOB and the staff are very friendly. They have recently updated their menu and changed their platters for the better. It is a fairly small location and I have been easily seated every time time I've visited. They can accommodate large groups with notice (15-20). Checkout has been slow in the past and that has improved greatly during my last visit. I highly recommend Hanami for their sushi and being able to bring your own wine is the icing on the cake.

super duper uber mega delicious sushi!! yeah, sushi cravings can be somewhat satisfied by going to walgreens or wholefoods to buy a pack of sushi but........ if you want fresh and beautifully made sushi then you have to try Hanami! i melted a little inside when i took my first bite. i couldn't believe my taste buds no lie. they are definitely worth a visit or just stay there and never leave their place because their sushi is all you need they also have fried ice cream... sadly i didnt get to try it so i'm going to wait until next time reallllly can't wait!

I went here with a Groupon that was about to expire and wasn't feeling very well that day. I had a lunch sushi special with 4 pieces, california roll, and miso soup. It was just enough food but did not spend the $20 Groupon. The staff tried to get me more food to make sure I got my money's worth. The soup was awesome, the fish was fresh and tasty but a little small. If I had been feeling better, I would have needed more food to feel satisfied. I will go back soon.

Perfect for date night, exceptional sashimi (BYOB) Hanami Sushi is a very welcome new addition to North Center's quickly growing options for excellent dining. The atmosphere is intimate, the artwork appealing and relaxing. There were not many people there on the Sunday night when we went (which I suspect will change as the word gets out), so it was perfect for a date. The service was very friendly and exceptionally good (which I guess is not surprising on a quiet night). Between the miso soup/seaweed salad and main dish, we were surprised with some warm, complimentary edamame that was, in my opinion, perfectly cooked. I'm a finicky sushi eater--I eat it without soy or wasabi--so the quality is essential for me. I asked what the freshest catch was, and I was treated to some very creamy salmon sashimi that had just come in. The super-white tuna was also very fresh, creamy, and buttery. The maki was also good--the Passion on Fire Maki was an excellent combination of flavors that I have never had before. It was slightly over-flavored, but the taste was appealing, so I didn't mind a little extra richness--definitely worth trying; I'll probably make it a regular order. The Mixer Maki was slightly less satisfying--it's a combination of spicy tuna and spicy salmon, covered with tuna and salmon sashimi. The top fish were fine, but the roll itself was neither flavored very well nor spicy, somewhat of a disappointment. This is probably a difficult issue for sushi chefs though, since most people immediately dunk it in soy with a ton of spicy wasabi--If I had done that (which I actually did for the third piece), it probably would have been fine. No real complaints though--I'm just splitting hairs. At the end of the night, we were again treated to a complimentary dish, this time mango and green tea ice cream balls. A very tasty end of the night. The restaurant is currently BYOB, which saves money--our entire bill for two was $43. If you forget alcohol, it's not a problem--just visit the new Bottles and Cans boutique wine and beer store 2 blocks north on Lincoln (I just discovered it today as well). On the whole, Hanami was an excellent experience that I highly recommend. I'd probably rate it 4.5 stars, but since it's a new neighborhood business, I'm rounding up...

Don't like it at all.....

This place has the best ramen. Period. It's not even on the menu but it's the best thing they got. The broth, noodles, meat...even the egg. Perfection all around. My family and I go there almost every week. Had couple of rolls and I found the fish very fresh but the nori they used was bit too strong and drowned the flavor. Kids love their tempura udon with very generous portion of tempura on the side. I've been to the trendy places in NYC that charge at least double for their ramen and I prefer this place. Place is not fancy and staff is attentive although bit inexperienced. But I don't care 'cause I LOVE their ramen so I'm super glad for this addition to the neighborhood!

super kind staff! been here a few times now and every experience has been perfect, plus they give you a cash discount! The sushi itself is always good, and the chef often comes out to ask how it came out! we even got free dessert. Thats how you treat a customer who you want to come back

Tasty sushi to enjoy with your favorite white wine at a reasonable price. Went to enjoy some sushi and split a bottle of wine with my sister one last time before I moved for a new job. The decor was relaxing and attractive, and the service was attentive but not overbearing. One nice touch is that the standard water has lemons soaked in it to give it a slight flavor. The cucumber salad we had for the appetizer was quite tasty, and all the tables came with complimentary edamame. The Hanami and Lover's rolls tasted great, and one cutesy thing on the Lover's roll is that they make hearts on the top with the sauce.

perfectly awesome in so many ways. disappointed never and their happy hour deals are some of the best in the city.

Excellent maki and excellent service. The hanami maki is amazing, as is the strawberry mochi ice cream. Will definitely be returning again!!

I dont write yelp reviews, this place made me want to. Service excellent. A+ Food was incredible. A+ Overall Experience was fantastic. I love that there is no uncorking fee and the food is reasonable priced for the freshness. My girlfriend and I loved this place. go here. be happy.

We shouldn't have ordered the usual suspects that we always do bc this restaurant is incredibly inventive. The mr right roll and Tiffany roll were fantastic as was the super white tuna sashimi. Next time we go we will DEFINITELY order the house made ramen which is not on the menu and some of the beautifully pictured (and highly recommended) dishes like passion on fire and snowball. Great little spot.

Our first visit was a great experience. Food and service were both excellent. We will definitely be back.

The staff was friendly, the place looked cute and the menu looked good- but... the place was empty and food took soooo long. If you want something to drink, keep in mind they are BYOB- and no longer offer the smoothies on the menu. Most places offer a kids version of chopsticks- but this place clearly isn't targeting that crowd as they had no idea what we were talking about. (Some may appreciate that tidbit) And keep in mind if you sit next to the window on a cold night- wear something warm as the window wall makes it pretty cold. I hope the recent Groupon gives them some traffic and they speed up the service- Always like a local place to do well. Tough neighborhood with so many other sushi places nearby.
