After passing by this place many times I finally stopped in yesterday to give this place a try. My first impression of the place was that it certainly was not geared for large dine in crowds since there are only 3 small tables in the place. That's ok with me since I was planning on getting my order to go anyways and only mention it in case others may be expecting a dine in type restaurant with many tables. I was there at lunch time so I took advantage of their lunch specials to get a good quantity of food for a very reasonable price. I ended up ordering a Pepsi, an eggroll, an order of crispy sesame chicken with pork fried rice and an order of 8 fried dumplings (pot stickers) for the low price of $13. I say the low price because as far as the quantity of food goes it would have easily been enough food to feed 2 people with average size appetites. Well, actually for 2 people you'd want to order another drink and another eggroll which would be about $2.50 more than my total, but still a reasonable amount to pay for enough food for 2 people. Ok, on to the food portion of the view. The absolute star of my meal was the eggroll. The flavor of the eggroll was good but pretty much the standard fare that you'll receive at 99% of the Chinese restaurants here in the city. What set this eggroll head an shoulders above everybody else's is that it was cooked to perfection! It was cooked to a nice golden brown so that every bite had a nice crunch on the exterior, but was not cooked so crispy that with each bite you end up with pieces of the outer wrap crumbling and falling all over. If it had been left in the fryer probably even 10 seconds more it would have just been another messy eggroll like we're all so accustomed to getting at Chinese restaurants. As far as the crunchy sesame chicken goes it was good, but nothing that I will get excited about. I like food with a bit of a vinegary type twang to them, but I'd prefer my sesame chicken not have it like this order did. It didn't thrill me, but it was good. Next time I'll just try another item off the menu and I'm sure I'll be more impressed. The pork fried rice was very good. Unlike most places it had a really nice flavor and was not bland like a lot of restaurants serve. There was plenty of pork and also very small pieces of sweet onions. A lot of restaurants could learn from these folks about how to make a good fried rice. The fried dumplings were easily the second best I've ever eaten. The gentleman that made them took the time to come to the counter without me asking him to and he explained how he made them and the care he took in preparing them just perfectly for me. A nice touch of customer service in my opinion. As far as the flavor goes the dumplings themselves were good. I thought that the meat inside them could have used just a touch more seasoning to bring them up another notch. What made me such a fan of the fried dumplings was the sauce that comes with them. Unlike most places the sauce was very good and the 2rd best sauce I've ever had with fried dumplings (potstickers). Overall it was a real good experience and I'm sure I'll stop in many more times. Keep up the great work Great Wall!

This place is always fresh, fast, and great!

This place is exactly what you expect it to be: cheap and greasy, hole-in-the-wall, American-style Chinese. The portions are large, the word "spicy" meaningless. I got two main dishes and will probably stretch them to three meals. The best thing was the (almost certainly frozen) veggie egg roll, with a thin, crispy rshell. The sauteed green beans were also pretty delicious. The "ma po bean curd" in no way resembled actual ma po tofu you'd get at a more authentic Chinese restaurant (or, you know, in china). It was basically a tofu stir fry in a generic brown sauce. Once I readjusted my expectations, though, it didn't taste bad, just very boring. This is definitely not a place you want to eat in at but my order was ready for carryout pretty fast. Bonus, my food came in reusable containers. #freetupperware

Just moved in two blocks away and the four star Yay! I'm a fan. is the perfect description. Ordered general tso's chicken, sweet and sour chicken, chicken fried rice, and crab rangoons. Everything was fantastic, can't wait to go back for their lunch specials!

If you're a Loyola student, this is the spot where you get your Chinese food. Not the best I ever had, but it's convenient and near campus.

You just have to be honest with what this place is. It's a cheap, neighborhood Chinese restaurant... And it's good at it. Not pretentious, no bells, no whistles... Just cheap, descent food with good service.

I have been here a few times since I lived in Rodgers Park. The food is usually pretty great and they make it in a very reasonable time! Also the food is very reasonable for the price they are charging cause it's pretty cheap. The negative thing about this place I don't like is that they have a 10 dollar card minimum. Why do I need to go threw the struggle of ordering 10 dollars of food if I only want like 7 dollars worth. Other than that a reasonable place to grab something quick to eat.

I almost walked by this place. I just moved to the neighborhood and I was looking for a place to grab some lunch. Great Wall really is a hole in the wall and I was amazed at how fresh and delicious the food was. I had the shrimp in black bean sauce and mooshoo pork. No sooner had I ordered than a man in the back began chopping fresh garlic and vegetables. The shrimp were huge and very fresh. The portions--I ordered smalls--were still huge. I had lunch and dinner the next day. I can't wait to try more menu items. I had to wait a hot minute for my food but I would've waited even longer for it. This place embodies the idea that you shouldn't judge a book by it's cover. Go here for some mouthwatering fresh seafood the next time you're in Rogers Park.

Easily 5 stars for a number of reasons. 1. Great price for the quality and quantity. Something like $5-$6 gets you a massive helping of fried rice, an entree, and an egg roll. I think it's technically the "Loyola Special" for Loyola students only, but they never ask for it when delivering, and only sometimes do for pick-up/dine-in. 2. Delivery is always FAST. None of that waiting for an hour only to get cold food like other places. Never taken more than 20 minutes (about a mile away), and they have delivered 2 entrees to me a half mile away in exactly 12 minutes. Unbelievable, but the quality was still great. Fast and tasty Chinese food. Simple as that. Couldn't ask for more. Note: If you pay by debit for a delivery, be ready to provide your ID and the debit card itself for the delivery guy.

I have heard mixed reviews about this place and decided to try it for myself. I got the Kung Pao chicken which is one of my favs.. it was good, average I would say, but better then expected. I got the lunch special which came with rice and soup.. I forgot the eggrolls so I will have to try that next time. A steal of a price $5.44 with tax for lunch.. Service was average.. everything was clean.. To Be Continued...

Tried this place two times - and only gave it a second shot because Rice (a few doors down) was closed. Food bland. Fried rice tasted like oil. I drenched in soy sauce (which I never use) just to make it more tolerable. So disappointing!

Have had bland, cold yuck from here enough times to give up on it. Staff have been surly more than once, too. Not worth the trouble It's a shame there's no other Chinese places nearby but consider Rice Thai instead -- their care and preparation are like night and day compared to this place.

Great Wall makes good soup and rice. I used to get their knock you out orange chicken, but I can't do it anymore. Not a bad pick up place with canned sodas. Little packets and little cardboard squares.

We've been ordering from them every other saturday. They have gone way, WAY down hill. So much so that we are actually walking our fat asses to the grocery store. Yeah, they have gotten that bad. We are done with this place.

I have been eating at this place ever since I was a freshman at Loyola. It is very popular among students here, as their menu pamphlets can be found in the lobbies of many dorms. I was hooked on Great Wall because of their "Loyola Special" - your choice of several meals that are each about five dollars. You get your entree, along with your choice of rice, and an egg roll or soup. The food itself is rather tasty. I myself I only have the Kung Paw Chicken or Mooshoo Pork. The serving size is very gratuitous and filling. As a heads up, this place will not take credit/debit cards for orders under ten dollars.

Fast, inexpensive, average Chinese food great for staying in and being lazy on movie night! Order here all the time. Never had a problem with anything. When it's what you are craving it hits the spot.

The merely adequate food is not enough to make up for the terrible and disrespectful service.

Pretty good Chinese, really quick ordering (at least in my experience) and you get a nice amount food for the price.

I've eaten here a number of times and have enjoyed it....BUT, this time I order food. All 3 employees were eating using their hands no utensils.... . Not a problem.. They proceeded to finish eating and began making my order WITHOUT WASHING THEIR HANDS.. I asked for my money back and walked out.. The least they could've done is at least make a show of washing their hands. Not sure I'll eat order from here again.....

Totally fine Chinese, polite and matter-of-fact service, great crab rangoon (and a lot of it). Inexpensive for what you get, as well. I have recently had a few lousy orders from where I usually get my chinese from, so I'm going across the street to Great Wall from now on. Very prompt service, clean place, and you get to watch the guys cooking which is great that a place is open enough so that you have a clear line of sight to all the food prep stations. I will definitely order there again.

Great Wall gives you the results you'd expect from a take-out Chinese restaurant. The food is inexpensive and tasty. It's not authentic or remarkable in anyway, but the staff is nice, efficient, and the food is consistently good. Plus, the deliver for very little additional cost.

I've been patronizing this place since the 1990's and I love it. Their delivery is quick and the food arrives hot. I enjoy their egg rolls, fried rice, General Tso's chicken and soup. It's my favorite quick Chinese place. There's really no room to eat there, so it's definitely for either take out or delivery.

This place was so disappointing- even the rice. It had decent reviews, so I figured, why not? But man. This place is mediocre at best. I was really disappointed, and I like hole-in-the-wall, twice-fried Americanized Chinese. Chicken was good quality, but almost no flavor. The egg roll was pretty bad. The rice was starchy and hard. I'll put up with some mediocre Chinese food, but this place was pretty bad.

It was gross. I was trying to go to a sushi place nearby with my friend but it was closed, so we walked over to this place to get some quick chinese food. I got beef with string beans and fried rice with it. The only good thing about it was the string beans- they were very fresh and tasty. The meat tasted very strange and rubbery- I couldn't eat more than one piece. The fried rice tasted like plastic and just weird- I've eaten fried rice from a bunch of different chinese places and never has it tasted anywhere near this strange and terrible. Plus, it was so tiny and hot inside that we had to take our food over to the nearby starbucks benches to sit and eat. I would never go back there again.

Better than expected Americanized Chinese food, which is good because they're really the only Chinese place worth eating in a 1 mile radius in this neck of the woods. I called in my order and picked up, it was ready as expected. They have a number of "special combination" plates that hover around the $6 mark. I got General Tso's chicken, which comes with a free egg roll and pork fried rice. Everything was very hot and the free egg roll was very crispy, not soggy as they sometimes are. The general Tso's chicken was nice and crispy too, the sauce was better than some others I've had recently. It had a subtle spice to it. It didn't come with any sort of broccoli/veg like, but I wasn't expecting that either. (as far as one of the other reviews where the reviewer forgot to tell them they were using credit card credit card... that's not their fault; it's generally assumed you're using cash unless you say otherwise. Also, I'm laughing at the term "organic salt").

A friend of mine lives down the street and introduced me to Great Wall. The food is pretty good and you get a good quantity of it for the price. I normally get the orange chicken, the crab rangoons and fried rice which is a solid combo.I have had other dishes there and they were all very good. They are pretty fast when you order delivery

Great Chinese food. Made me feel like I was home in NY. Good delivery time and they were friendly when they took my order. Had the chicken fried rice, beef and broccoli, shrimp lomein, and crab Rangoon. I think this will become my usual Chinese place.

So, I decided to order from the Great Wall after discovering their menu in the vestibule of my apartment. My order: Kung Po Chicken Shrimp w. Chinese Greens Egg Roll Several minutes after ordering, I realized A. They did not ask how I was going to pay B. Nowhere on the menu did it mention method of payment. Only a delivery charge. I was kind of panicked since I did not have any cash and I could not walk anywhere because of a pinched nerve in my back! Also ,my lame cellphone decided to lose its connection and the delivery guy arrived before I could call. After being chastised about not informing them that I was using a credit card (and letting them know I was under the impression that THEY were suppose to confirm method of payment with ME) I paid and sat down to eat. The menu states that they have 20 years of Chinese cuisine but the Kung Po (which is flagged Hot and Spicy) was bland, bland, BLAND! I had to add my own red pepper flakes and still it was wanting. The Shrimp w. Chinese Greens was ok. BLAND but the veggies were fresh as were the shrimp and after several dashes of Organic salt it was ok. Oh, I just remembered there was also a bit of eggshell that I bit into and for the life of me I have no idea where it could have came from. Egg Roll. Basic. Tasty. Will not be ordering from here again.

Having just moved to the neighborhood, I was craving some Chinese. I noticed that this little area is like an Asian Central -- since there is a Japanese place on one street and a Chinese and Thai place across and just down the street. The reviews were favorable for this place so I thought I'd give it a try. No need for delivery -- I'm very close. I found a menu on Grub Hub to order on the phone. They don't take online orders - which is fine by me. Already cautioned by the reviews that you have to spend $10 to use a credit card (gots to get my rewards points and besides, it's not hard to spend that, even at the cheaper places). They have some great lunch specials at this place, which I will most likely take advantage of in the future. I decided upon the special combo, which includes an entree from a list, fried rice and an eggroll. What, no soup? Oh well. I ordered the Moo Goo Gai Pan, since I wanted Chop Suey, but prefer the lighter sauce on the Moo Goo dish. I also ordered a side of white rice (probably should have asked them to sub - but I wanted to try the fried rice) and crab rangoon. The food was hot and ready when I got there. The place is kind of divey, but not dirty. The portions were generous. In fact, so much so that I could have easily split this with someone. Given that I eat small portions, I'll get at least 3 more meals out of this. I prefer white rice with a dish like this, but I also love fried rice. However, I am more partial to Thai fried rice, I have found. But for what it was - the fried rice was fine, if you like Chinese fried rice. I won't be ordering fried rice from this place and rarely ever do from Chinese places. The Moo Goo was deliciously prepared and the rangoon very good -- and generous. I will definitely be returning, for sure. Just not for the fried rice (but that's not their fault - I just prefer Thai fried rice). Oh, and I love when they give you those nice plastic containers - as a result, I haven't bought a plastic container for storing food or stuff in years! You really can't beat their deals, if Chinese is what you are looking for! The menu is extensive and very reasonably priced. One of the advantages of living around here is that there are so many students, so places tend to compete with specials to accommodate them, which only makes it better for everyone else! Here's to higher learning!!

Here's the highlights: My food hadn't even been started when I got there. When It finally was ready, it was wrong. When I called to complain, the guys working there told me I was wrong & must have ordered wrong. I've been eating the same dish for 25 years, 6 months of which from Great Wall, and what I got tonight is NOT what I ordered. Because I'm angry...here's the whole story: I moved to Chicago in December & have been ordering from Great Wall since we moved here. Typically I'm very satisfied but I have to say, after tonight, I'll be ordering from somewhere else. I called in a take out order & when I arrived it hadn't even been started. He asked for my phone number as if that would help him "locate" my food - he just looked at the caller ID to figure out what time I'd called in. I asked, for the second time if I could have my Shrimp Chow Mein with Rice and was told I could not. Finally when I got home I discovered they hadn't even made what I ordered. Instead I got something else I've never had before. I have been eating the same dish for 25 years and the guys attempt ot explain to me that I must be "mistake" and "ordered something else before" infuriated me. Especially because two weeks ago I ordered the very same thing & they got it right. If you want to spend your money at a restaurant that treats its customers like idiots & doesn't deliver what you pay for, be my guest. As for me - I'm done with Great Wall.

Decent Chinese food; they're right down the block from us, so it's a natural fit for when we're fiending for egg rolls, kung pao chicken, or another so-called "Chinese" dish. ;-) They're open until 11pm, which is better than most other places nearby, meaning they win by default sometimes.

While I have no complaints about the food here - it's actually pretty good for the price - I have to say that the customer service this last time we ordered left more to be desired. I called and placed a delivery order, as I've done in the past, but the person on the phone did not ask me for a credit card number, or even give me the total, before hanging up. Then, when the food got here (which was FAST, by the way), the delivery driver had to go back out to his car for a credit card reader - and then, instead of apologizing for the delay, he said, in an exasperated way, "Next time you order, tell them you're paying by credit card, or they'll assume you're paying by cash." (I don't know of ANY other restaurant that offers delivery and does NOT ask you upfront when you make an order how you're paying.) Then he left, without a "thank you" or anything else. So the problem this time wasn't in the kitchen - but it still made for an unpleasant experience. I'll think twice before ordering from them again.

I regret ordering from Great Wall for a few reasons: 1) food wasn't that good (shrimp fried rice and crab rangoon); 2) food didn't agree with my digestive system; 3) they told me my card was declined, so I used a friend's card and later discovered we were BOTH charged. Now I have to get this sorted out with my bank because the person who answered my call at Great Wall wasn't helpful. Don't make the same mistake I did - go elsewhere.

This place is my wife and I's favorite Chinese Restaurant. I love their pork fried rice and also their crab rangoons (They give you ten per order) Kind of dingy looking on the inside but the food is great.

Depending who is cooking in their kitchen is determinative of how good the food is. The only time I would eat there is if the older gentlemen is cooking, otherwise the taste is extremely bland!

This is the place where you go to get your out-of -the-freezer, deep fried, and lathered in sauce food fix. Even in that category, the quality is sub-par!

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
