We've been meaning to review Golden Wok for the longest time. Definitely recommend delivery, their dining area is a bit gloomy. They're super fast (not always the best sign for "fresh food," but moving on). Food is consistanly good! We always get the Kung pao beef and beef fried rice. The egg rolls are the best ever - not sure if they're made there; but definitely like no other. Hits the spot when at home with friends and need yummy food fast.

I am sooo sad. Every time I come home to Chicago, I must have Chinese food from golden wok waiting for me. I get Egg foo young, egg roll, and fried rice. It is completely different. The gravy is now watery brown liquid and the egg roll is small and not tempura battered, the fried rice was different. New owners, different cook. It's most likely not bad food, it's just not what I expected. I want to know where the cook went so I can go there.

New owners, food is totally different. Gone are the huge awesome egg rolls. Sad.

This place is now categorized as mediocre. The food changed and not for the better. The egg rolls are gone, now they serve the standard issue egg rolls for the same price. Kow Kow is the place to go now.

So I had a craving for egg rolls today and I went to yelp and it steered me to this fine establishment. I turned off on the no outlet side street next to the restaurant and it was packed. I was like either this is the new spot for illegal transactions or chinese food nirvana. I took the food home and nirvana took over. The egg rolls were very big, crispy, and mmmm delish...I ordered 2 but one was enough of this goodness for one sitting. The real winner was the Sweet and Sour Chicken. When I opened the carton I almost didnt think I got the right order since it looks so different from other places Ive ever gotten it. It was strips of chicken cooked to perfection. It was crispy and flavorful and my new favorite chinese dish EVER... Yelp you did it again...What would I ever do without you???

I believe this place has changed hands in the past year or so. I know everyone was crazy for the egg rolls and now they are gone, but in a lot of ways It has improved. Chinese food is not cookie cutter, the same dish can be vastly different from one place to another. I think a lot of the bashing has to do more with people liked the old place and it changed. And yea, the egg rolls are pretty generic now. But it is much brighter and cleaner than it was and I like the food. We frequent quite a few Asian restaurants because we like variety. This is now the place we go the most (good food, close by, value). The Lunch specials are a great value and available on weekends (at least as of this review).

First time eating here. Food was good. We had moo shu pork, Chicken fried rice. and egg rolls. Fried Rice was good. Egg rolls were fluffy? or puffy. Altho good we have had better egg rolls. The moo shu pork was really good alot of onions. The "pancake" was flour tortillas. I was supprised to say the least. Overall I will go to again. "pancakes" maybe not.

This is the Chinese place down the street from my husband's childhood home and the one they ordered from growing up. The nostalgia factor is high here. Stepping into the Golden Wok is like stepping into a time machine. This place reminds me of the Chinese restaurant in A Christmas Story in a lot of different ways. Kitsch factor is high. My husband loves their Hong Sue Chicken. (only available in a large size). I've had several dishes and been underwhelmed by most of them. Too sweet sweet & sour last time. I asked for them to add broccoli and pea pods and they said "that's not how it comes" to which I replied "yes I know but its how I'm asking for it". I ended up with just 2 broccoli crowns and pea pods but they of course charged me $1.50 for "extra veggies". So my overall opinion of the food is "meh"- kinda pricey for what you get. If you want "Americanized" Chinese food....its not too bad. But holy crap GO THERE FOR THE EGGROLLS. They have the best eggrolls I've ever had. They make them somewhat traditionally but then batter them before frying. Holy wow, so good. This place was on my way home from work and I'd often think about stopping in to get an eggroll before dinner :) CLOSED MONDAYS.

EGG ROLLS. Golden Wok 5731 N. Central Ave in Chicago makes the best egg rolls I've ever had. They are so doughy-crunchy-savory-sweet that I never eat fewer than three of them as a snack/meal! They've only provided me with those little packets of Sweet-Sour sauce each time I've gotten egg rolls here, but I've only gotten carry-out; I don't know if they provide more sauce options for dine-ins. The sauce hasn't mattered too much anyway, because these incredible egg rolls are actually good without any sauce. I found good egg rolls at Kow Kow in Lincolnwood. They provide a good Sweet-Sour sauce for the egg rolls. And New Star in Elmwood Park has a very good Hunan egg roll. I like New Star's Hunan egg roll because it's a bit hotter/spicier than their regular egg roll; New Star has a good Sweet-Sour sauce too. But Golden Wok has the best egg roll!

Went here based on the reviews....especially about the Egg Rolls. (Actually the reviews made me crave them even more!) I wasn't disappointed! The Egg Rolls have a great flavor and good size. Take Out service was quick, and the food was good. I will be back for more.

Was in town for the weekend and was taken here by an old friend. He spoke of it very highly on the way there, saying the flavor 'jumped off the plate' but after getting there we were both disappointed. Most of the food was way too sugary for my taste and the egg roll which was anything but crisp (the way an egg roll should be). All said and done its definitively a place that has seen better days, the people inside were helpful, but thats because it was mostly empty when i was there (8pm) If your craving chinese and everything is closed this would not be a bad choice but would probably try something else if i had the choice.

The best egg roll I have ever eaten. Oh. My. God it is good. Also, fried rice is nicely seasoned, not too much of anything, and served moist but not wet and sticky. Tasted great. I went with my 2 year old boy, perfect for families with young kids or just people looking for really, really good chinese (american) food. But don't be stupid - order an egg roll. It just may change your life.

I'm so disappointed with the food I received tonight. I have been a loyal customer for two years and my husband has been the majority of his life. It's been the ONLY Chinese place we would ever even go to. The food has definitely changed, I'm assuming there is new owners. The amazing egg rolls everyone has raved about are now half the size and no longer dipped in tempura. And the pot stickers are not even remotely as good as they use to be. Everything tastes different. The food's not terrible, it's just definitely nothing special anymore. Which just sucks because this place used to be our absolute favorite. We most likely won't be ordering from here again.

5/6/2015 Since I can't delete my review, so I wanted to update, I really like the food for the last year, much healthier than most was a 4.8 star for me. I heard there are new owners again as of beginning of April 2015, so putting 3 star until I can go in and try the food. Update later. thanks.

They changed ownership and I truly miss the egg rolls and the former recipe. I went there for years and it was our to go place as a family. We called the egg rolls *crunch crunch* silly but fun. Gone but will never be forgotten! The other dishes are also prepared from diffrent recipes and gone are the original tasty homemade dishes that were unique and different than anyother Chinese food restaurant that we have purchased from the past. With that being said, and not to dwell on the past,we ordered two nights ago from grub hub. We had S&S chicken, egg roll, combo fried rice and beef egg fu young. I had requested for my SS to be separated from the chicken ,this way it wouldn't be soggy. This wasn't the case. Unfortunately the temprua was saturated, soggy, and literally just falling right off the chicken. It was mushy. I called and the gentlemen that answered, said my order did not state I wanted it separately. I wasn't looking for reimbursement nor a replacement, just to shine a light on the overlooked request. I double checked my order from grub hub just to be sure..and indeed I did. . It ruined my meal for the most part, but I did make the best of it. What I do really appreciate is the fact you have many options for the fried rice for a small up charge of 75 cents you can upgrade your fried rice and I had chicken pineapple it was supposed to be spicy according to the drop down menu but it wasn't ,however the chicken was clean it was white chicken meat the rice was decent although I do miss the old recipe. The combo fried rice was ok says my husband. Although fresh and a ample amount of meat,it lacked something. After adding soy sauce he seemed to enjoy it a little more. He said he just wasn't used it it. I could tell it seemed fresh and on the healthier side. Guess we do get used to things a certain way. But that doesn't mean we can't change :) The egg fu young was good. We asked for it well done, and they nailed it...however some improvement could be made with the gravy. Its watery. Over all it technically is a New establishment and seeing that they bought it out from the old owners which I believe was their sister they have a different spin on the food and it was fresh and it was quality. I did not like the egg roll @ all ..l even with it being the status quo . I would give it a try again with the knowledge that this is not the old golden wok. Delivery was fast, food was hot and fresh and if we do choose to order again I will follow up with a phone call to assure that my sweet and sour sauce is sent separately from the chicken and I would not want the egg roll. Having an expectation of the food as we once knew it could have influnced our taste buds somewhat. In all fairness I would give it 3.5 stars with the hopes it rises to the potential that it seemingly has. Less the egg roll for me....

I miss the old recipes. The egg rolls in tempura batter, war won ton soup, fried rice with Japanese rice, Botan rice candy. They were truly unique. They might have changed hands again. When they first changed, the new owner said he would still make the old dishes. Yesterday they were all young guys and they told me I was out of luck. They packed the package poorly. They ran out string beans.

This used to be my FAVORITE Chinese food but since they switched owners forget it. Food is just like every other commercialized location you can go to. The egg rolls were one of a kind and they got rid of them. Now they have Costco microwave egg rolls- good move. Totally killed this spot for me. Over 20 years coming here and I will never come back. Don't waste your money.

This used to be my wife's favorite place. Shortly after they changed owners, we placed a pretty hefty order. Needless to say after we drove 40 minutes to pick it up, and 40 more minutes to get back home....much to our surprise some of the food was not fully cooked and was still raw. Not to mention they forgot to give us our steak on a stick (probably best they didn't give it to us, it probably would have been raw), as well as our pops. I called on the phone to let them know about the missing pops and the raw food, and I told them I would be coming back to give it back to them. The girl on the phone told me they were closing and she would give me a credit towards my next meal, and she hung up on me. I called back repeatedly and no one answered. They got me good. Please avoid this place if you are reading this. Clearly u can see after my experience, how poorly I would rate them. 1 star is too good for a place like this. They deserve a half a star to no stars. I don't know how businesses like this manage to stay in buisness. Please don't get taken like I did. Find another place with better reviews.

I don't recommend the place anymore. So sad the egg rolls are gone. My review from last year was some how dated 1/1/2015. It was suppose to say 1/1/2014. Sorry for the mix up.

New owners, lots of changes to the menu. Not sure if the food is good or not but I wanted to take my old post down since the old owners sold the business and I haven't ate there since. Apparently I can't take off my old post so at least I can update it. Disregard the 5 stars, since that can't be changed.

I was craving Chinese on Thursday night so I decided to order from The Golden Wok. I was surprised that the food is different. The rice isn't as good as it once was. My husband wants the old egg rolls.

Great meal! Have not picked up food from here in awhile. They must have a new chef or different owners. Food was very good fresher taste. Good job.

New owners, and a definite improvement. Have only ordered once so far, but loved the Shrimp w/ Vegetables and Four Seasons. Good variety of fresh veggies, and tasty meats in the Four Seasons. We'll certainly order from here again.

We want Golden Wok to get better since we live nearby. The menu is overly ambitious. They should cut offerings by 60% and concentrate on doing Chinese food well. In addition to changing the egg rolls, they changed sauce packets. The mustard packet is unspeakably nasty. Buy a bottle of Trader Joe's Sweet Chili Sauce if you need sweet goop on your egg roll. (No matter how many times we request no packets, they load up take out bags with it.) Seriously avoid their "Thai" offerings, worst "curry" ever (go to Thai Elephant on Devon for yummy Thai food)! Hubby likes Buddhist Delight (order it spicy, otherwise, very bland), Korean Chap Chae Noodle, Kung Pao Chicken (mega celery) and regular or Korean BBQ Short Ribs. Moo Shu Chicken is ok (sauce needs work); Cold Sesame Noodle Salad is BORING and needs greens. Take a pass on the Szechuan Chicken. I regularly see one of the "chefs" squatting out back taking a cigarette break. Wish he spent that time improving the menu instead.

Had a craving for egg rolls last night so came to yelp for advice and found this place. Based on the reviews my son and decided to give this place a try. Now, just as most everyone said on Yelp, the egg rolls were great, very comparable to KowKow's egg rolls but the rest of the food we ordered was crap. We had sweet and sour chicken, which was the oddest looking sweet and sour chicken I had ever seen. We also ordered the orange chicken special with vegetable fried rice and it was horrible. The orange chicken had this nasty looking color to it, the rice had no flavor and it wasn't even hot! We were the only customers to visit the restaurant at that time so our food should have been pipin hot. But no! Next time I want Chinese, I will head on down to Saigon Grill which is much closer and has way better food.

I like this place. Very comfortable to dine in, owner is friendly, and food is great! The best part is their egg rolls and pot stickers. They're fresh, and not frozen!

Egg Rolls indeed!!! The City's best Chinese Egg Roll hands down! Their food is absolutely amazing. Everything is sooo fresh, cooked to order, none of that Panda Express frozen Chinese B.S. I have been coming to this restaurant for about 20 years now and their food has never ever failed to make my insides very happy. Try the Orange Chicken/ Beef, their Happy Family, Crab Rangoon, Beef/Broccoli, Sweet-Sour Chicken. and G**Dammit don't Forget the Egg Rolls... Did I Mention Egg Rolls?

I have been going to this restaurant for years and have never had any major complaints, HOWEVER tonight I ordered mu shu and instead of getting the traditional Chinese pancakes, I received a flour tortilla! It was carry out and I certainly wasn't going to turn around and drive back. Totally ghetto and lazy and I will not be back. I think the quality of this place has gone downhill.

  • Vince H.

Wow. You guys weren't lying about the egg rolls. I've been to a LOT of chinese restaurants and I have to say the food is damn good here. The eggrolls are definitely some of the best I've ever had. I have yet to try the crab rangoon which I will probably order next time. The orange chicken was phenomenal. I can't believe this place was right under my nose the whole time. Well, better late than never I guess.

Their egg rolls are beautiful-looking, but one of them triggered my allergies. The server had told me that everything was made with regular vegetable oil, but she apparently didn't know what she was talking about. I'm betting the rolls are fried in sesame oil. Too bad--the place was otherwise nice.

Stepping into Golden Wok is like stepping back in time 25 years (and that's a complement coming from me). The egg roll here is good as mentioned by previous reviewers and the other grub is acceptable. The premises are clean, the service is courteous and the place is retro-tastic. I'm sure that Golden Wok is a neighborhood favorite.

This place has the best chinese food! This is where I g for take out/delivery. If you would like to dine in..good quiet place, but not where you would want to go on a date. This is a good dine in restaurant if you have little kids that are going to run around while you eat or you just don't want to be around people.

This place is great, i order food for delivery almost every sunday when im at home. Great sweet and sour chicken and pork. Fast delivery, although I think Kow Kow in Lincolnwood has them beat on THEE best eggrolls.

  • Laura A.

Hey, just tried Golden Wok. Their food was OK but i may not be back. Their oarnge chicken was a little too thickly battered and I really hate dark meat pieces but the sauce was OK. Had some fried rice but my husband said it had very little taste. The eggrolls were different from what im used to. They had a special batter/coating. They were alright. I ate, im full. thats all.

Golden Wok has the BEST Mongolian Chicken/Mongolian Beef!!!! It is secluded in a little area near Central/Elston on the far north side of Chicago,so you may not have heard or seen this place unless you live in the area. It is definitely worth it if you are in the area and crave some good chinese food.

Good menu selection, fast delivery, clean...dine-in, carry out, or delivery available. Their prices are pretty standard...not pricey at all.

Friendly, clean and big menu. Food was okay. Was still eating soup and appetizers when entrees came out. The "serving plates" were cute. Somewhat large for the table size. "Just made it home" if you know what I mean... Gave 3 stars. Everyone else seemed to like it. Don't think I will return.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
