Live Jazz, free live Jazz that is. Every other Sunday the Crosswinds Latin Jazz band does an open set, may I say they are tight. If you are uncomfortable being the ivory in the ebony, head North, wait in the long ass line at The Green Mill and pay to get in. The music in the laid back lounge is on par with any other Jazz club I have been to, the big difference for me is the soul food. I was bellied up to the bar during the bands first intermission, a young lady approaches me and asks if I would like to eat. I asked for a menu, and suddenly I am in the scene from the Blues brothers where Aretha Franklin is trying to take the Brothers order, it went like this, Me: Sure have you got a menu? Girl: We got soul food. Me: Cool, what you got? Girl Tipping head down, Soul food. Me: Do I get a choice? Girl: You want something to eat? Me sitting back in my chair: Yes I do. My plate of fried chicken, collards. corn, biscuit and sweet potatoes came right before the band jumped into a great version of Manteca, my head bobbed as I slurped porky bits of collards between peppery fried chicken, I looked across the bar and an amazonian woman with a cigar between her lips eyeballed me, the biscuit was buttery with a little crumb, just the way i like. I threw back a Miller, mixed my sweet potatoes into my collards and wondered why i moved up North to this bitter cold. A woman sat next to me, she had streaky graying hair, a smoky perfume, and everyone knew her, everyone but me. The band leader came over after his second set, introduced himself as Greg, he introduced me to the lady, a local Blues singer who would later join him on stage. I soaked it all in, the real Chicago, the real makers of music, people living their lives as they want to. Well at least that is how it seemed to me. I realized then and there, Chicago is my home again.

Okay, if you're a house head, then this is the place to be! Straight Chicago old school house. And it's for us grown folk folks!

If you are lookin to STEP or LEARN, you should hit the Family Den. There are 2 rooms and a LARGE bar.. Kinda resembles club ambrosia or the bottom line in the old New Orleans. It is not a fancy spot, just someplace where you can really have a good time and listen to some GREAT house music. They were serving food, but I was busy watching the steppers on the floor.

I had a great and fun time(friday). For those that is looking for an evening of drinking, dancing and socializing on the southeast side of town, this is THE place. Music is good, drinks is def affordable and strong. The womens bathroom is not only clean but is red-carpet styled. Rose pedals is even on the carpet. Nice touch:) Thanks attendant you are the best!

"Never judge a book by it's cover" certainly applies here to Family Den. Why am I all the way on 89th and Stony on a Wednesday? Because of a girl of course. Family Den is a medium sized, dark, smoke filled bar. The clientele is mainly middle aged, blue collar workers. They have a kitchen in the back where they serve food, and according to the sign you can order a huge bowl of greens for only $5.00. I did not see a menu but I saw people eating mostly soul food (fried chicken, greens, potatos). I was a little intimidated being the only white dude in there but everyone was nice and we had a blast. The bartenders were very attentive as well, but did make me pay once my 1st tab got around $100. I gladly paid up and countinued my quest of intoxication. There is an electronic dart board, pictures of musicians and Mohamed Ali sporadically placed around the walls, and even a dance floor. I particularly enjoyed looking at the Janet Jackson picture placed by the bathroom. It's the one where she is almost puling off her jeans. What a nice image to have right before you use the restroom. Here was the kicker. I'm sitting with my friend having drinks and all of the sudden I notice 5 guys all in suits arriving with band equipment. They set up and played some of the sweetest jazz I have heard in a long time. Who would have guessed this joint could attract that kind of talent. The band was certainly say, Green Mill quality. They do accept credit cards which is good because my bill was quite high. Yea, I drank a lot but even still it was surprising to have such a big tab(s). Will I go back?? Depends if I am out that way again because it is far from my hood in the west loop. I would however recommend to anyone who is indeed around those parts. It's almost been 24 hours since I was there last night and I am still hung over from my time at the Family Den.
