Chinese Cuisine
The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.
Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.
There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.

Absolutely love the food here, and to think I couldn't fine good Chinese food in Hyde Park. I've always ordered food never ate at the place itself but the service is so fast and efficient. They are always kind enough to bring change, and of course the delivery person is so well mannered, and nice, that it makes me feel like this restaurant definitely goes out of it's way for their customer service satisfaction. I ordered the following items: crab ragoon, spicy salmon maki, vegetable fried rice, crispy egg noodles with chicken and veggies, general two chicken, and beef in black bean sauce. All in small sizes, and this portions were huge!! Also they provide such lovely containers for the food, which are reusable. Crab ragoon was good and extremely well filled, however a little too much cream cheese and less of the crab. But crispy! Spicy salmon maki was a bit disappointing, didn't seem fresh and it didn't look to appetizing. However, it tasted fine but not spicy at all. Vegetable fried rice was excellent. Well cooked and not too much soy sauce like some places but the perfect amount. Something I would order again. Crispy egg noodles with chicken and veggies was great as well. Tasted really good and included lots of veggies and chicken. The general tai chicken was delicious! My only complaint is that I wish it was a bit crispier that's all. But I would definitely recommend this. And my absolute favourite and highly recommended dish is the beef in black bean sauce. This is just excellent; great flavours and great tasting. Beef slices are cooked well, the veggies are good, and the black bean sauce is just exquisite. I recommend people try this place! Especially if you're living in Hyde Park, since we are very limited to good food especially in the Chinese cuisine.

First time trying De Rice and I got delivery. The driver was very nice, and on time exactly. Had a nice short conversation while filling out the receipt and warranted a nice tip. I ordered the Potstickers, Crab Rangoon, and Chicken fried rice. Crab Rangoon was cooked nicely, and a very good helping of filling to boot. Only thing is these were slightly on the sweeter side so I couldn't really eat them all myself. Potstickers were good as well, not too oily but could use a bit more meat inside them. Rice was great! Minimal oil used and flavor was good. Included some good veggies that helped add to the flavor. Will definitely order again!!

Crab Rangoon was delicious but everything is was blah. If I order again I would only get the crab Ragoon.

Should have written this A long time ago. Back when I was pregnant I couldn't eat a darn thing. I had hyperemesis gravidarium and could keep nothing down. Not even water. Well I had a craving for Chinese food... and well, chinese food at other places wouldn't stay down. But Derice?? LOVED it. The only food my pregnant self could keep down. Their Hawaiian fried rice and crab rangoon kept me and my baby alive! now my son is 3.. and I still come back. Love it! FAV chinese food place in Hyde Park!

Best Chinese food in hyde park by far, and they deliver!! Loved my Mongolian beef! Shrimp rice, Cantonese egg rolls all delicious!

I'm really trying to find decent non greasy yet flavorful Chinese food in Hyde Park. I'm afraid I have to keep looking. Really quick, the veggie fried rice is really good according to my boyfriend. It had a variety of vegetables and the rice wasn't greasy at all. The problem? No flavor!!! My jumbo shrimp fried rice had peas, carrots and no bean sprouts!!! I really don't think peas and carrots belong in fried rice but what do I know. I may go back and try something else but this place isn't on my fav list.

Food is mediocre. Nothing to get too excited about. I ordered the orange chicken and it had a distinct fryer oil aftertaste- it makes me think that they leave the oil in their deep fryer longer than they should. Their boba drinks are delicious.

Everytime I order from here, I get exactly what I want. Best crab ragoon!!!!! It's not fried hard with a teaspoon of filling. It's made right. For those who say it's too much filling, hey I'd rather have too much and get what I paid for. The beef was tender and not chewy in the fried rice. The fried rice was not greasy and I like that they can make any dish spicy. My egg roll, again made right, not greasy and enough filling where you can actually taste the veggies. I love their shrimp fried rice. They are well mannered, as this is one of the only asian establishments in this neighborhood that has employees who don't have attitudes, yell at you when you make a substitute request or roll their eyes when you ask for extra utensils or napkins. Delivery is fast and my food was hot when it arrived. This place is great!

Really good food & fine prices. Coming from the east coast, I've had the hardest time finding really good, Americanized Chinese food... and these guys put my east coast favorites to shame. Their crab rangoon is awesome! I have pretty much only stuck with the sweet & sour chicken, but recently tried the chive pancakes. They were excellent & the sauce it came with was incredible. Delivery time is good & the folks on the phone & in the store are very nice.

lychee shrimp is yummy! I try something different everytime- have yet to be disappointed

Really tasty, seemingly good quality chinese. We were happy with our experience, the only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because it took TWO HOURS for the delivery to reach my home, less than a mile away. Kind of ridiculous... no? Besides that, we were quite satisfied and will order again.
(4)Joshua L.
Good sushi, cheap price, great for take out for lunch. This is my first time and I will return.
(4)George P.
These guys are amazing! Really quick, not the hands down greatest good but really does the job when you're hungry and don't feel like cooking. Prices are very reasonable and they have the nicest delivery guys on the planet. They remember you too! Special shout out to the crab Rangoon!

Great Hyde Park Delivery! Just wanted to give a quick review of De Rice. It's good, solid delivery for Hyde Park. The food is prepared fresh (at least everything that I've had). The quality is consistent, delivery is quick and reasonably priced. Personally, I love the MooShu Chicken, the green beans and the hot and sour soup, but other menu items have been good. I've order their maki rolls and have been happy with them - not high end, but fresh and good and the spring rolls are great. The only think I don't like is their fried tofu dishes as the tofu is more chewy than crispy. Anyway, if you are in the mood for carry out - it's the place to order from. Also, as most reviewers noted - the delivery guy is super nice. So, do it - order from them!

De Rice is the best (cheap) Chinese food outside of Chinatown in Chicago. I've been to the physical store on 47th, although with delivery only $3.00, I've more often bought massive quantities of food to sustain me over the week. Every time I order from them, I get the Jumbo Chicken Fried Rice, which is a steal--that alone is two meals'' worth of food (the Pineapple Chicken fried rice uses the pineapple, as opposed to soy sauce, to provide flavor, which isn't very effective). The scallion pancake is best in my opinion without meat, and I've begun calling the nameless sauce it's served with Crack. I've had some misses here, the Singapore noodles among them (even though my boyfriend loved it, so your mileage may vary), but I've always been incredibly satisfied with my meal. Other recommendations: Broccoli in Garlic Sauce, Eggplant in Szechuan Sauce, Crab Rangoon (if you don't have to move in the next 12 hours), and Peking Duck. The black mushrooms with baby cabbage was one of my least favorite dishes, but it was probably just because I wasn't familiar with the taste of that particular (gamey) mushroom.

WARNING: this review is sushi biased!!!! I mean... I was really disappointed in myself for eating the rice because Im PALEO and all. However it was worth the sugar headache. It was good AF. Please excuse my F.

I was pretty disappointed in the food from de rice, especially after all the awesome reviews! I ordered delivery and they arrived way before expected, which was great. I ordered crab rangoons, sweet and sour chicken, hot and sour soup with fried noodles, an egg roll, and shrimp fried rice. The crab rangoons were not as crispy (could've been due to the delivery, though), and they were way too full of a creamy substance. I intentionally say creamy substance because it was unlike any cream cheese I've ever seen (very slimy and barely any crab). The sweet and sour chicken was very dry and looked/tasted like it was old. The soup was pretty good, some of the fried noodles were stale, though. The egg roll was perfectly fried, but the inside was filled with some unidentifiable substance...definitely wasn't chicken and/or vegetables (although, I did detect some cabbage). The shrimp fried rice was probably the best thing I ordered, I actually finished all of it and they gave me a pretty large amount even though it was part of the lunch special. I like that they give shrimp fried rice with the lunch special instead of white rice or plain fried rice. I wouldn't recommend this place and I'm not much of a picky eater when it comes to Chinese food.
(2)Derrick A.
Lunch special too pricey for lack of flavor and soft breading on chicken instead of crispy chicken. Also not to friendly when ordering. I won't visit again.
(1)Paris W.
Just ate here tonight for the first time and the food was fresh, delicious and reasonably priced! $22 filled up 2 adults and 2 kids. They also made my son a special gluten free dish that he really enjoyed. Great service and great food.
(5)Whitney W.
I liked this place. I ordered a Szechuan eggplant that was good, but very, very greasy. The sushi was pretty good as well. I can definitely say that I had enough food to last me for 4 days. Not expensive, and quick delivery.

Food is amazing, only restaurant in the Bronzeville-Hyde Park-Bridgeport area that dares deliver to my area without crackhead delivery fees. Portions are fairly large for price. Crab Rangoon is absolutely AMAZING, and so is fried chicken (best in the area, IMO). Also, best won ton soup. Customer service is A+++. They may not be the fastest but they always make sure to explain to you and comp you accordingly, should any issues arise. Delivery guy is the nicest guy ever. Overall, sweet spot.

Portions: large. Prices: low. Service: great. Ambiance: not what I go there for. Neighborhood: Kenwood not HP This is a great delivery & take-away place, but not somewhere you would want to go for a romantic date. There are other places for that. Where you'll pay an arm & a leg, I might add. The food is prepared to order. There is at least one misspelling on their take-away menu: a sure-fire sign that the food is legit in my book. For simple, fresh, well-prepared asian cuisine, this is de spot.
(4)Georgia M.
Lots of food for the price. Not the best food, but not bad. It's pretty good the next day, so good leftovers place.
(3)Hannah D.
This is an amazing Chinese place. By far this is the best in the neighborhood. The delivery was right on time and was made by a very cheerful gentleman even on the coldest night of this winter. I was very impressed with all the high quality fresh vegetables and meats used in the dishes we ordered. Well done, De Rice. JD

as a vegetarian who loves asian cuisine, i was curious about this little take-out restaurant. after enduring one two many lackluster meals from another chinese delivery with poor customer service, i was so pleasantly surprised to discover this kenwood gem. i have thoroughly enjoyed the consistently tasty vegetable fried rice and veggie egg rolls. the ma pao tofu was also really delicious. i tend to stick with what works a few times before exploring additional dishes, and they have provided me with several yummy and guilt-free non-cooking nights of chinese takeout. also, i highly recommend that you try their smoothies. they are quite different from some of the other neighborhood eateries insomuch as they are actually good and seem to have a higher nutritional value. i have tried variations with pineapple, coconut, and strawberries. treat yourself well, and order one of these if you need a good refreshing drink. also, i find the portions to be quite shareable even in the smallest orders. they are not a stingy lot. in fact, they are quite kind. i am glad that they are in my neighborhood. this is a local business worthy of our support, especially we it tastes as good as this.

Super friendly staff and decent grub. We only ordered delivery but the delivery man and the woman I spoke to on the phone were incredibly kind and helpful. Now, normally if we want Chinese food we go to Chinatown, but sometimes we are lazy. Or tired. Or we are depressed because it's gloomy and -20 outside with the windchill. In such cases there's no way in hell that we're getting off the couch to go anywhere to eat dinner... and that's where De Rice delivery comes in.
(3)Michael L.
De Rice catered a lunchtime fundraiser at our university, and it was phenomenal! The food sold out within an hour, and people loved it. They provided Orange Chicken, Chicken Fried Rice, Vegetable Egg Rolls, and Crab Rangoon. The Orange Chicken was incredible -- cooked just right, perfect texture. The orange sauce with chilis was a great mix of sweet and spicy. I'd definitely have it again. I didn't get to try the Chicken Fried Rice, but it looked great. Big chunks of chicken, good amount of vegetables. Looking forward to trying this in the future. The Egg Rolls were awesome, very tasty and substantial. Looked and tasted homemade -- I highly recommend them. The owners were extremely helpful and wonderful to work with. They had the food ready precisely when they said they would, right on time. I wouldn't hesitate to go there again, whether for a large catering event or dinner with my wife.

So I am obsessed with fried rice ... OBSESSED .... seriously. De Rice has the best fried rice in Hyde Park. That's the bottom line. The combination "De Rice Fried Rice" is delicious and has tons of all the different meats. But my go-to is the Shrimp Fried Rice which is equally delicious, generous on shrimp, and slightly cheaper than the combination. Hubby also loves the Chicken and Broccoli stir fry. For a buck extra I also get some crispy noodles to munch on all day/night. Crab Rangoon and egg-rolls are both perfectly acceptable and the Fried Chicken Wings are large and quite good. Best part is that they are consistent. Everything tastes like it should, every time you order. The delivery guys are great - friendly and super-quick. A note on the competition: Nicky's has it's moments, but is WAY overzealous on the soy sauce most times. Not worth the risk. Wok 'n Roll is fine for a cheap lunch special, but you have to eat everything while it's hot because, much like McDonald's fries, after 15 minutes or so, it turns into packing peanuts.
(4)Eric S.
De Rice should put Nicky's and Wok N Roll out of business. It's quite good, in relative terms - i.e., given its location, Hyde Park, and thus its meager competition. Each crab rangoon was over-stuffed with cheese-crab filling - a problem I wish I had more often. The General Tao's chicken was hot and crisp, with fresh red and green peppers, and sauce with character (unlike the mystery goop at Nicky's). To repeat, all of my praise is to be understood in relative terms. The Singapore Vermicelli was amazing, but I don't have anything with which to compare it, which is a shame because it was even better than the Gen Tao's. On the other hand, if you've ever experimented with a noodle stir fry and curry powder, the dish will ring familiar, which makes it disappointing to some. The delivery was super fast. After several orders, it is worth noting that the dishes are hit and miss. The mango beef is very good, as is the black pepper beef. My roommates love the dumplings. The watermelon smoothie is delicious. Yet, the garlic lovers dish is mediocre (despite fresh ingredients and real garlic, which I usually love), and most of what comes in the 2-person combo special is hard to eat. The eggrolls have a strange chalky taste, and, despite tasting okay, the spare ribs have a funny smell which indicates that they have been frozen for too long. The strawberry chicken is a failure. Hyde Park finally has decent Chinese take-out (it always did, i just didn't realize it). Compared to the competition, De Rice is a Hyde Park standout, my criticisms notwithstanding.

Decent food, inexpensive, and what you expect for inexpensive chinese food. We are from Oregon and had a craving for americanized chinese food. Egg fu young in Oregon, is green potato like patties with weird yellow cream gravy (seriously, you won't find the real thing in Oregon). However, at De Rice, the Egg Fu Young was great and the gravy was spot on ~ nice to have an old east coast favorite! Tasty, salty, not too spicy and not too greasy either. Food reheats well and we are impressed given all the negative reviews of chinese food in Hyde Park. I think this may be the hidden chinese gem in Hyde Park. Veggies were fresh too. Not amazing, but solidly good, clean, fresh. Thank you.
(4)Wesley J.
The food is definitely better than your standard chinese food (especially in hyde park). but man. they are the nicest people in the area. they are always willing to give recommendations (that are good and in line of what you're generally looking for). that delivery guy. he's the nicest guy in the world. loves to have a conversation. he also always smiles and always says "i hope you have a nice dinner". really the nicest delivery guy in the world.
(5)Maria L.
I will give this place four stars for two reasons (1) its probably the best Chinese food you're going to get in Hyde Park and (2) their delivery driver is the nicest person ever. They're also super fast. The food itself is alright. Their crab rangoon is pretty freaking delicious. Their eggrolls have the strangest texture to them (like cat food), so I would steer clear of that. Out of everything I ordered, their fried rice has been my favorite... but I will say, its not super consistent. When I ordered the BBQ pork fried rice it was pretty much what you'd expect, but when I ordered the Hawaiian fried rice, I'm not sure it was even fried... it was more like plain white rice with stuff in it (it still tasted great, and even better when I fried it myself the next day with some soy sauce). Everything else I've ordered has been good. Not amazing, but edible, which if you see my review for Wok N Roll, that's not always a given in Hyde Park. Needless to say, as long as I live in Hyde Park, this will be my go-to spot.
(4)Adam S.
Not sure why this place has not been Yelped more, but I will add my two cents. Good food. Fast. Friendly delivery guys and the person on the phone that takes the order is actually patient and friendly (hate to say it, but that is RARE with Chinese takeout restaurants in Chicago). Good variety of options and they serve large portions, though you may want to ask for more rice as they give you an itty bitty teeny carton of rice unless you ask for more. Beef and Brocoli is awesome and the Fried Rice with Chicken has HUGE pieces of chicken breast.
(4)Michael H.
Really good food and very nice people. Worth the money for sure.
(4)George L.
Ordered a vegetarian dish for delivery, and it came with meat in it.
(1)Claire F.
Below average chinese food. It is edible but not super satisfying or delicious. The employees are very nice, and the portions were very large. The fried rice was soaked in soy sauce.
(2)Ian T.
Pretty good food for a local place. If you are in the area and craving Chinese food check it out. I have yet to really explore the menu. I have only tried the Chinese. I will check out the Japanese food and re-review, but for now it's only a 2-star...
(2)Keisha T.
I personally didn't have the best experience there. I really pay attention to what is going on behind the counter. I saw the fruit for the smoothies uncovered with fruit flies flying around. With being able to see through to the cooking area, you would think they would keep it clean. Perhaps, this is the place where you want to order your food for delivery so you won't have to go inside. I wasn't overly impressed with that I ordered (orange chicken). I personally think if you go about 4 blocks down to Fung's on Lake Park and 47th, you will have a better food experience. They also deliver and the prices are reasonable. I'm sorry, I just wasn't impressed. It's not horrible, but with all the other options around, I won't be going back.
(2)Melissa W.
Great tasting food, nice people and fast delivery--what else can you ask for? After years of settling for all of the other Asian delivery options in Hyde Park, we only are ordering from De Rice.
