I don't know about other dishes, but their beef boat noodle soup is outstanding authentic & taste just like home! I definitely a big fan!

Nice place, very convenient to Edens Expressway. We met our daughter for lunch there the other day, and shared Vietnamese Roll, Spicy Beef Salad, and a Yellow Chicken Curry. We finished it off with Sticky Rice and Mango. Food quality was excellent, very tasty, We weren't in a huge hurry, and didn't notice any particular delays. The hostess / server was very pleasant and fairly attentive.

This is a great place to have a fun dinner with friends. As other reviewers have mentioned, this place can be a little slow, so if you want a quick meal, this isn't the place for you. I usually head to Chai with friends I haven't seen in a while, and we always have a great time. And with BYOB with no corking fee, how could we not? The spring roll is good - usually 3 of us share it and we all get a few pieces. Their pad see ewe is really good, as is their sushi. One of the biggest cheers for this place comes from Chai being so very accomodating to food allergies. One of my friends has many severe allergies, and Chai takes extra care to prepare the meal she wants in a way that she can have it. Looking forward to heading here again soon.

I had Thai food for the first time last week for my birthday and i have already been back since. The services was acceptable and the food was good. I specially liked the shrimp rolls, and i really don't care for shrimp all the much but these where delicious. I am glad I chose to try this place out.

My first dish at a Thai place is always Pad Thai, and it was fairly mediocre here. The service was awful too. There were only five people in the restaurant when I went, and I still felt like I needed to bring a whistle to order / get some water / get the check. Too bad because it's close to our new office.

Family and I are new to town and my wife and I came to Sauganaush to look at homes. We found this place on yelp and have to agree with the reviews. I had the fried rice lunch special with a combo of all three meats, egg roll for appetizer. Wife had pad Thai, chicken with spring roll appetizer. Both meals were fresh and very flavorful and a healthy serving for a lunch special. I would give 5 stars but service is "eh."
(4)Jingles J.
I was gonna give them five stars but then when we went In nobody greeted us we have to seat ourselves and grab our menus (this was last Friday night) .... What really did it was their food .... We ordered fried tofu (yummy!) , fried rolls( yummy again! ) , crab Rangoon ( yum!yum!) , boat noodle (ooooohhhh!!!) and traditional beef fried rice ...
(4)Linda L.
The food was good, but the service was horrible. I don't know if the server has something against us Asian, but she was acting like we were begging for her food. Seriously, stop. We ordered crab rangoon, chicken satay, yellow curry, and thai roasted chicken (must-try) All the dishes were good, but I would never go back again.

This review is strictly about their take out service which is spotty at best. Sometimes I call and they say 15 minutes and it's ready when I arrive. But sometimes they tell you the pick up time and you still have a long wait. Tonight was one of those times. I arrived at 6:30, the time I was told my food was going to be ready and when I arrived they told me 5 minutes. 30 minutes later they brought my food out. There were two tables in the restaurant, one that already had their food and another that ordered their food after I arrived. Their food was delivered to their table 10 minutes later as I waited 20 more for my food. They were not busy. They did not offer to compensate me for my wait. While the food is fresh and good, this may be our last time to order from this restaurant. A shame since options in Sauganash are limited.

Just ordered and picked up my food , Rama curry chicken dish was with super dry and old chicken , and it seems like every chicken dish you get is like that , brown rise was tasteless and broccoli undercooked , the only dish that is good is Tum yam soup !! Seriously you have a restaurant don't try to fool people by giving than an old or not good ingridients

Stopped in here on a Saturday evening. The place was empty, which made me nervous. But the food and service was great! We got the crab rangoon and potstickers, which were some of the best I've had, the red chicken curry and a side of sticky rice (because I love sticky rice). I have absolutely no complaints about this restaurant and I know we'll be back. I'm excited to find a place nearby where I can get sushi and my husband can get something else that he likes, since he doesn't like sushi. Can't wait to try their carry out option when I don't want to cook.

I rarely stop at this place, despite the fact that it's the closest Thai restaurant to me. However, a few nights ago I was hungry, it was a little later in the evening and I knew that Chai's Asian bistro didn't close until after 9 p.m. So, I ordered some chicken pad Thai - pretty simple - picked it up (from the absolutely deserted restaurant) and took it home. Now, I'm a Thai junkie and I'm not ashamed to admit that I'm a girl with a good appetite, but I couldn't even take down half of my meal. The chicken was dry and everything else was terribly bland; I would even say it was a little bitter. It was so not worth the $11 I paid for it and I ended up throwing half of it away anyway. I was so disappointed with this place and I will surely not be returning, no matter how close they are or how late their open. I would suggest to whoever's reading this that you just drive the extra few minutes over to The Elephant Thai Cuisine in Edgebrook for a far better meal.

Service is pretty slow. And I was the only one there. Sushi is not good. Guess their specialty is Thai food only.
(3)Kim L.
This was my first Thai food experience and it was wonderful! I tried the garlic chicken entree, the crispy sweet and sour chicken entree, and the pad Thai noodles. Everything was delicious. Nice atmosphere and service as well.
(5)Annmarie G.
I've been going to this place ever since they opened because my parents live nearby. I haven't dined-in in awhile, so I can't really comment on service .Yet, I find the food just average. My family and I ordered take-out from here last night - mainly because it offers both sushi and traditional Thai dishes (we couldn't agree on cuisine). I hadn't had food from here in awhile so I had forgotten what I liked. However, I was in a sushi-mood, so I ordered the dragon roll. My mom ordered the Pad See Ewe. The dragon roll was fine, but the pad see ewe...The broccoli was not fresh, making the dish blah. As we ate, I remembered why I don't really ever crave this place. It doesn't really offer any outstanding dishes, just decent dishes to give you your Thai/sushi Fix. When I have the time, I go somewhere else to get tasty Asian food. As the Yelp rating for three stars identifies, this place is only "A-OK".
(3)Jeremy S.
Best real thai food I've had ever had it was really really good! I got the basil chicken rice and my bf got pork blood soup made spicy so amazingly tasty I don't know the real name though. The only thing I will say is they didn't offer me their lunch menu that is on the take out menu so be sure to check that out if you go there before 3
(5)Louisa F.
Crispy chicken was insanely dry. Miso soup was okay but was almost all broth. Hardly had any seaweed or tofu in it. Egg rolls were okay but nothing special. Those three items were not worth the $25. The only nice thing was the food arrived much sooner than expected.
(1)Carlos V.
Stopped in for lunch a couple of times and also for dinner. Food has always been really good, never really had bad service, and the place is always immaculate. I knocked off a star because it seems like their lunch portions have gotten really small. I picked the pot-sitcker appetizer and basil chicken off of the lunch menu and was disappointed to only get 2 pot stickers and a really small portion of basil chicken. My husband received the same portion size on his lunch order. We both left hungry! We will most likely skip this place for lunch going forward but will still return for dinner.

This is my first time ordering from Chais's. Wow! I am really impressed. The food arrived earlier than promised, hot and looking good. Everything was so delicious and fresh. The shumai was perfectly cooked and attractively arranged in the container. I've had Pad Thai about 100 times but no one ever asked me the level of heat I wanted before. I ordered medium and it was spicy but a great change from the sweet kind I usually have had. The Tom Kha was also super great! I will definitely order from them again - and soon!

After reading some of the other reviews, I have to share my own opinion/experience... My advice to those of you who posted good reviews: Get out of the neighborhood and try something better cause this family owned establishment sucked!!! This place is terrible! Sushi is nothing to write home (for those of you who think its good "get out and try something else") There is more to Saugaunash/Chicago than this crap! For the price we were unimpressed to say the least! In addition, we have ordered from them a couple of times (due to the fact that they're little to no other alternatives in the area for Thai/Sushi) and have never once had a memorable experience. In addition to dining in, we ordered delivery from them which was cold, we were charged for food we didn't receive, and when we called and complained the employee gave us attitude. That said, when they finally understood their mistake (especially on a $100 delivery order) the owner called back and apologized for the misunderstanding and brought us an extra chicken dinner (and the food forgotten) back to our house...At that point I could of cared less, and in all actuality felt as though they spit in our food because of how nasty I got with them over the phone...More importantly, when I am charged for something I didn't receive and am told I did it just gets stupid...I prefer the consumer is always right attitude especially when it comes to something forgotten, but billed nonetheless. We have not ordered from them since and have passed on our negative experience to others..

This little BYOB place is perfect for the Saughanash hood. The service is a little slow, which is odd for such a small place, but it's tolerable. I have never been disappointed by this place and the dine in and take out crowd seem to agree. Everything from crab ragoon to pot stickers to sushi can be found on their menu. The food is always flavorful and lip-smacking. Everytime I go here, we order one of something and love it so much we have to order another. It's perfect for a low-key dinner out with any companion. The sushi is notable as well! Enough to choose from that I haven't tried all of them already but not limited to the standard rolls like california and spider. I'm pretty sure there is no corkage fee either- this place is great for a cheap night out that isn't lacking in flavor or variety!

Small place. Modern decoration. Good pad thai but I have had better. A little pricy. Skip on the egg rolls...not that amazing.
(3)Stephanie D.
So happy there's a restaurant near my new house! I ate here for lunch one day and it was packed. It's small, but neat and clean when dining in. I ordered their Pad thai with Chicken and liked it a lot. It was a little more brown than some others I've had, but I like that style. I look forward to trying more dishes on their menu!
(4)Janette L.
This place has more ambiance than most other Thai places (trendy and modern but small) and BYOB. I come here if I am in the area and am too lazy to venture to Lincoln Square (it is right off the highway and right next to Whole Foods!) That said I like the pad thai and curries from here. Trust me and skip the sushi completely. Portions - adequate, Parking - fairly easy (Cicero or Peterson), Service - good (family owned)
(3)Michael B.
Simple is sometimes the best way to go. They are good at creating thai food that people enjoy eating. They don't need to broaden their menu because what they have works. Simple setting, Great food, always a destination to go.
(5)Ari T.
Well, Chai's USED TO BE our "go-to" place for carry-out when we we're too tired to cook -- and then they started getting chincy with the portions. The last straw was a $5 order of crab rangoon that had only 4 dumplings -- and they were small to boot. Sorry Chai's, you had your chance. Now my appetite and my business now go to Noodles Party on Lawrence.
(2)Ifi S.
Sauganash is not known for its variety of restaurants, so Chai Bistro is probably the best restaurant in the area. It's a very cozy family run place with delicious Thai/Japanese cuisine.
(4)Bianca G.
This is a hidden treasure! It is a small and unassuming storefront, but don't be fooled by the look. The food is delicious and is authentic thai. The sushi menu is small, but what they do have they do great! The Thai food is authentic and fresh, I have never been disappointed. Give it a try, it's worth every penny!
(5)Karen H.
Fabulous Thai food!!! Always fresh! Perfectly made to order! And they have great Sushi too! It doesn't get any better....a little Sushi appetizer with Pad Thai.......or full Sushi meal! It's the best Thai I've ever had and the Sushi is top of the line too!
(5)Mike H.
I work in Skokie and have been on the prowl for a Thai restaurant with a good lunch special for a while now---and I think this might be the place. For $7-$8 you get your choice of an appetizer (Crab Rangoon, Egg Roll, California Roll, or Spring Roll) and a decent sized entre. The food was good--I had the Crab Rangoon that (shockingly?) appeared to have actual CRAB MEAT in them and the Ginger Chicken, which was great. The service wasn't too hot (one server for the whole restaurant--and people at my table were being served entres before everyone had received their appetizers), but overall it was a pretty good meal. I wouldn't drive out of my way to go to this place, but it's a nice for a cheap Thai lunch if you're in the hood already...
(4)Rachel R.
Honestly, I have never "dined in" but I pick up sushi from Chai Asian Bistro at least twice a month. I'm not a big fan of their noodles, but have been happy with all of the sushi rolls that I have tried. They also have an affordable lunch special.

There are maybe 3 - 4 Asian restaurants in the Sauganash neighborhood/area, and Thai is definitely in the top three. :) I had the pad thai many times and it is very similar to the pad thai at Cozy Noodles in Evanston - spot on texture of noodles, great blend of tamarind and fish sauciness, AND orangish yellow color. I dont know why but I am very attracted to the the orange/yellow colored pad thai, eventhough it's probably just tumeric powder (which is arguably flavorless). I am glad that there is atleast one decent dish I can get on the run in my parents neighbhorhood. For those familiar with the area, it is nice not having to drive that far for good asian food. For those not familiar, the neighborhood is on the outskirts of the city, bordering Skokie, Niles and Lincolnwood; Anything remotely good is atleast a 10-15 minute drive.

I have been to many many Thai restuarants that are great for certain dishes and warned to stay away from other dishes. At Chai's so far I've tried 5 entress and 4 of their sushi plates and all were beyond my expectations. I had just gotten back from Bangkok and I really missed the smell of the food, I found my go to place now! Must try dishes are the Pad See Ew, combo fried rice, crab rangoons, and spider rolls. Chai's Asian Bistro is not your hole in the wall establishment where food is prepared quickly and tastelessly. They use quality authentic ingredients and great cuts of meat and I'm willing to pay a little more to have that. See for yourself y'all. I'm just glad I live so close to them.

I've been dining at Chai for over two years now and today the service was so horrible that I don't know if I can return. Co-workers and I went here for our lunch today and were greeted by sub par service that took so long to get our food we ended boxing it up and leaving. We only get so much time to take lunch here in corporate America, so when it takes almost an hour to receive my Chinese food, I am not a happy camper. To top it off, they comped us all of 10% off our meal for the delay. Mind you we've spend a good deal of money at Chai Bistro over the years that they could have comped at least one of our meals. 10% isn't much on a $40 tab. I hate leaving bad tips but this time it was required. Hopefully they get their act together because the food is good here.

Crispy chicken is to die for!
(5)Jennifer Q.
I've been here before and can't believe I had forgotten to Yelp it! I was here Monday night -my friend Anna (bless her heart) took me out for a bday dinner. I really do like this place. It's very small and the food is good. My only complaint is that the service is pretty slow. My boyfriend got his dish a good 10 minutes before ours came out. So, he was being polite and ate slowly, but he probably could have finished before ours even came out. I suspect they only have one cook in the back who literally cooks the entrees one dish at a time. Other than that, I really like this place. That said, if you have time to kill and a fun group of 2-4, you can chit chat and pass the time. However, if you are in a hurry or have a large group and need things to come out at once, this might not be the best place.
(3)D. M.
Excellent service, sweet waitstaff and INCREDIBLE maki rolls. Sooo fresh and delicious. Highly recommended. Cute interior for the area, too:)
(5)Kristen J.
Amazing food! I like to think of myself as a Thai food aficionado and this place is incredible! The crab rangoon is the best I have ever tasted! The salmon deluxe roll is so fresh; the rad naw krapraw is unbelievable - the magical sauce is to die for; the panang curry tastes like it was made with all fresh ingredients - not the pre-made bulk stuff you get at a lot of restaurants. We topped off the dinner with the banana wonton dessert, which was a perfectly delicious way to end a fabulous meal. Chai and his family are all so friendly and welcoming - we cannot wait to go back!!
(5)Allison S.
Being a huge sushi & Thai fan I was extremely pleased to see that one had opened up a few blocks from me. I love that it is BYOB and there are many places close enough to walk to buy a bottle of wine before stopping in to get our fill of pad woon sen or volcano rolls. Both of which i highly recommend. It is a small location, but never too crowded, service is a little slow, but mainly because the staff is small. But, that just leaves room for conversation in the comfy atmosphere of friends and wine. Plus a bonus is delivery and pickup. Which I have taken advantage of as well!
(5)Jeff P.
Went there the other day for a normal lunch outing and the food was outstanding as usual! Sometimes we pre-order our food before we dine in. We are in and out fast. Thank you Chai Bistro. Also they are expanding their restaurant knocking out the wall to make their restaurant larger. I highly recommend their lunch specials and have NEVER had a meal there I didn't like. Always a lot of flavor and always leave full!
(5)Chris S.
While it may not be the best Thai food in the city of Chicago, it is outstanding for a neighborhood restaurant. The food here is very fresh and quite tasty. I love all the Thai noodle dishes and the sushi is always good. The wait staff is always very cordial and the owner is very friendly. The only downside is the fact that the dishes are brought out in a random fashion with one coming out when its done and five minutes later another coming out. Its a bit pricey, but a good, intimate neighborhood restaurant.
(4)Sharon H.
Great food. Love this place an the owners are nice and friendly. I love the rice and soups. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu. Mr. Chai is nice guy and wife is great cook.
(5)Kenji T.
I have a feeling that all the 5-star reviewers of this place are Sauganash locals who have never ventured south of Foster and east of Pulaski.. There ARE better Thai places out there in Chicago (see Bucktown, Lincoln Park, Old Irving, etc.). That being said, the food here is NOT bad. I ordered the Beef Pad Thai and Chicken Rice Soup, and I thought they were pretty decent. However, I'm giving this place 2 stars mainly for the customer service. When I went here with a party of eight tonight, all of our dishes were brought out at different times. The last person received his dish when the first person who received it was well done with half of it. THAT can ruin friendships. Also, I saw the server on two occasions have his thumb/fingers touching the food when he brought out the dishes. That is not very... sanitary. The stubborn owner (I'm guessing the mother of this mom and pops business) gave us the biggest attitude when we were trying to pay for our bill (there were eight of us so we were all trying to pay for ourselves with cards/cash..). She didn't even try to hide her frustration. I understand that it's more cumbersome for the restaurant to swipe five credit cards, but AT LEAST change your face from a :( a :3. All in all, okay food (a bit pricy in my opinion), bad customer service. Am I being a little too harsh? Maybe. Are you a hater? Yes. (jk). Happy yelping!
(2)Troy V.
Amazing Thai food! I came with a group of 4 on a Saturday night. This place hit the spot. It's BYOB, but there's a Whole Foods across the street with anything you could want. We had appetizers, sushi, pad thai and dessert. This was the best and most authentic Thai food I've had in Chicago.
(5)April P.
Another disappointment. Had their panang chicken, and it was CALIENTE. I like my Thai food with some heat, but I purposely chose this type of curry, thinking it would be on the milder side. Not so...I think too much heat takes away from the flavoring of the rest of the dish. Bummer. Guess I will have to try another dish. Why am I so adamant of finding my favorite dish at this place? Three's a try, I guess.
(3)Anthony M.
Excellent Food. I havent been here in awhile but went there tonight. The prices habe gone down but the quality is there. I felt that the menu could have had a few mote beef dishes. Still a hit
(4)Jacob J.
Sushi and Thai cuisine. I've been here a few times for their lunch menu. Approx $5.95- $7.95 & $9 for sushi. Lunch portions are satisfying, you get the entree with choice of meat / veg (tofu) and choice of appetizer(Egg, Spring, or California roll or Crab rangoon). Crab rangoons are not sweet, just plain, served with a light sweet and sour sauce. I've had the Pad See Ewe and Crispy Chicken. I'd say skip the Crispy Chicken, there's nothing to the entree, its chicken battered, deep fried and chopped to smaller bite size pieces. Also served with tangy chili sweet and sour sauce. Cool interior, well, cool enough for Sauganash. Few tables, mostly seating 4-6 people, those seating two are cramped. If dining alone, you can also sit at the bar. Service is quick and takes requests. Located near the off/on ramps for I-94. Ample street parking. Once Whole Foods, opens on the corner, Chai AB, will surely become more popular. I'm not the biggest fan of Thai food, I really don't have a clue about the food and I stick to those dishes I know. What I've had was good and filling. I would/do come back with friends for food and drinks, before starting my weekend evenings.
(4)Sandy R.
I've been here several times and have never been disappointed. Combo of Thai and Sushi both are great. Service can be a little slow, but all around very pleasant. Try the Spicy Basil.
(4)sarah s.
Yum! Yellow curry with sweet potatoes, sooo tasty! Great texture, really rich flavor. Tasted the delectably moist and not-at-all greasy chicken teriyaki too. Lunch specials come with a side or crab rangoon, egg roll, or soup. They only deliver within a 1 mile radius, and I'm just out of that range, but will definitely be back. There is a parking lot in the back too...
(4)Paul K.
This little strip-mall bistro is one of the best restaurants in the area. It's small, but the atmosphere is modern without being too trendy. It seems like a family-run place and the food is always excellent. There's some normal 'asian restaurant' type dishes, as well as a good selection of thai dishes. They have pretty excellent Pad Si Eiw, but my favorite dish is the Crunchy Chicken. They also offer sushi, but i've never had it, so i'm not sure how it would be. If you're looking for a reasonable meal in this neighborhood, you can't do much better.
(5)Marlene S.
Chai is a family run BYOB neighborhood restaurant. Chai is small, clean and spare in an attractive manner. The food is good and attractively presented. The wait staff is pleasant, if a bit slow, and there is pleasant jazz music playing softly in the background. I love having such a nice neighborhood restaurant.
(4)Jon M.
I've had Thai food all over Chicago and I think that this is one of the best restaurants to get it. The food is extremely well prepared, authentic and you have a lot of choices. Besides the Pad Thai(which is one of my favorite dishes on the menu), I really enjoy the: 1. Pad Woon Sen 2. Basil Chicen 3. Thai Fried Rice I've also had their Sushi rolls and think the quality is top notch. In addition, the service has always been terrific for me and they will make good suggestions depending on what you are in the mood for. Lastly, I think the prices are very reasonable at about $8-$12 per plate for dinner. Its BYOB which works out nicely because there is a Whole Foods right across the street and you can have your pick of any beverage you want from around the world. I usually go here with 2-3 friends and we always have a great time without breaking the bank.
(5)Al B.
As you know from my other reviews, I am big on owner presence. This is a great thai place that rivals the best downtown has to offer. Their spicy beef is a great low carb dish that will knock your socks off. Pad Si Eiw is the best I have tasted. Fine selection of sushi. I have never had a bad dish at this place. Be a little adventurous-try something off your usual list. The owner is present almost every hour they are open. And while it is a small place, I have never had to wait long for a seat. It seems like those who really like Thai have discovered it but not many others. With the quality and service the owner puts out, it won't be long before word gets out.
(5)Angie R.
Had lunch here a few weeks ago. Great food, beautiful presentation. The only reason I didn't give them 5 stars was because the noodles in my pad Thai were a tiny bit under done. Not a big deal because the flavor was perfect.
