Italian Cuisine
The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.
Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.
If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.

Calabria is a fantastic Italian Deli in "Downtown Beverly" right off the 103rd St. Metra stop. You can get fresh meats, cheese, bread, and anything you need to cook a great Italian dinner or just order and wait and take it home cooked. They also have prepared dinners frozen to take home alo. You can eat in or take it to go. My favorite is the eggplant parmesan sandwich. It is excellant! See my blog: beverlymorganpark.net for more

I know that mostly everyone else had a positive experience but I certainly did NOT. The staff here is awful and rude. One guy in there was extremely nasty when I wanted to order a sandwich like he didn't want to make it all. And the food there is not good at all...The bread is hard, the meat was dry and there is no taste to their cooked food at all. I will NEVER go back to this place.

Pretty good mom and pop deli. I had the chicken parm sandwich, and wish I woulda got it with giardinara. Pretty reasonably priced, plus, they have black cherry soda, which for some reason, is really difficult to find.

We had them do catering for a party, and also went here to pick up some stuff before a trip to Ravinia. Here's my impressions: 1. Catering: Best in Beverly/MoPo. We ordered a full tray of lasagna, salad and garlic bread. The lasagna and salad were absolutely delicious- the garlic bread was too crispy for our tastes. The cost was cheaper than Fox's. Definite hit. 2. Deli: Also, really really good. Really affordable as well. 3. Service: GREAT to deal with, no attitudes, super-friendly and usually pretty quick. It's a really nice find, and I'm glad they're in the neighborhood!

First off, let me say that I have had almost everything on Calabria's menu at least twice. I live right down the street so naturally I gravitate to this eatery. I have to say that some things on the menu are pretty darn good, like the chicken parm ! But yesterday i ordered the grilled chicken salad at a cost of $ 6.00 and change. It was absolutely inedible! I tried the slices of cucumber and I had to spit them out because they tasted like they were coated in some kind of hand sanitizer., The "grilled" chicken was more like jerky. And to boot, the tomatoes were turning brown. I didn't have the heart to tell the owner, he is a nice fellow. So I just chucked the whole salad in the trash. Word to the wise: skip it ! Go to Subway instead.

Calabrias is a great deli, we love getting their pizza setups and sometimes subs. They taste great and are pretty reasonably priced. One summer we even took up their offer in our local paper to do a backyard bbq catered by Calabrias. Everyone enjoyed the food and the chef who grilled for us couldn't have been more friendly. We loved it and it was such a big help! We continue to stop in and pick up some meats and cheeses on a regular basis, we love it!

I love Calabria. Every one who works there is so nice, the food is prepared quickly, and the prices are good. My favorite sandwich is the Caprese, and I also LOOOOVE the Blue Heaven (although I ask them to go easy on the bleu cheese). They also have great frozen pastas, and their pizza set-ups are good and cheap (three crispy cheese pizza set-ups for under $10). Their grocery and deli items are good, too. I love their bruschetta, and their breads (pretzel rolls, too!) are fresh and delicious.

Very old school Chicago. Service can be hit or miss-they are a moody group an not overly friendly. I am usually coming off the train toward closing time and they can be come across as a little grumpy and you can tell they are excited to close up and go home but aren't we all. It gives it character so I kind of dig the attitude. None the less they accomodate and the spagetti and meatballs, lasagna, sandwiches and salads are all really good. I'm a fan.

It's like a new restaurant/deli with great food that I already love now. Inside Calabria, there's been a remodel that's made a world of difference. More tables and chairs now throughout the interior since the center aisle of shelves of speciality items, oils, sauces, pastas, etc, have been shelved to a wall to open up the place. What a nice improvement. And best of all, still really good, quick tasty food.

We recently catered two- 3 foot large subs from the 95th street store in Evergreen Park. They gave us the lettuce and tomato on the side , but only enough for one of the 3 ft. subs lettuce arrived wilted and brown already and tomatoes were not ripe ...ended up going to Jewel and buying fresh lettuce and tomatoe for sandwiches. Another time I was there, they again didnt know what they were doing, waited 25 min. for a 2 sandwich carryout (and no one else was in the store.) Lastly, I once catered chicken lemone, and it was just so so. I have not found this worth while at all, wont try it again .

I had the pizza. I wish I hadn't.

It's just my favorite sandwich shop in the whole city because the Blue Heaven is just the best sandwich in the whole city. I always look at the whole menu and am tempted by at least three or four of Calabria's other lovelies, but the Blue Heaven always wins out. But let me just admit this to you - my second choice is the Grilled O'Donnell, a grilled turkey and cheese (mozzarella? provolone?) on flavorful rye. Sometimes, when I'm really hungry, like I was today, I get a sandwich as a side for my other sandwich. And it is nice. For full on pleasures of the carb, they make great curly fries and those freshly fried spiral chips. And their new redesign has really opened up the place a lot. I know where my bread is buttered. Heavily buttered. Mmmm....butter.....

Grabbed a foot long Italian to go with a jar of their homemade Giardiniera. This was the biggest foot long sub I've ever seen. Seemed more like a 15 inch sub. The bread was awesome. Their home made chips are great. Really enjoyed their take home pizza kit. The crust turns out really good. Will probably add spinach next time we make it.
(5)Amy P.
So far I am a fan! We grabbed take out sandwiches once and they were great. Last weekend we used their catering to get a couple of subs, pre cut and on trays. They were good - no complaints. I did however cut what they sent me in half - we were really looking for smaller sized pieces. (which worked well, because when we got the trays it seemed like a small amount of food. Cutting them smaller and putting on a nicer tray worked out perfectly.

Calabria's has one of the best if not the best Italian subs in town. I bought one of their sandwich trays for a party of mine, and everybody devoured the sandwiches. They used to have some great pizza puffs too but I'm not sure if they have those anymore. I remember going to Calabria's when they were located on Western Ave. before moving to 103rd and they still have the same great food and service.

A nice enough neighborhood sandwich, and Italian market place, which the Chicago has a lot of other examples of out there(i.e. Piatto Pronto, Alpine, Bari, etc). I was starving really badly just before I hit my friend's wedding party last summer, and couldn't wait any longer for a snack to eat after riding the Metra Rock Island train. And of course, preferred an option that wasn't Subway if available, though I know that isn't always possible everywhere. So this ended up being a good bet, with a good enough sandwich. They even had a World Cup 2014 soccer game airing on their TV, which was really cool. Whenever in the area again, I'd definitely come back. Keep in mind they are closed on Sundays and aren't open late, but great option for the Monday-Saturday daytime and early evening hours.

Before commencing my review, I had to say yelp disappointed me by shutting down for maintenance at approximately 1030 hour today. That was the reason why I couldn't check in or post pictures. Now back to business, I've regained my faith in Italian food in Chicago so here's another one that I would recommend. I ordered the Mickey (fried eggplants, marinara sauce, and cheese wrapped in a baguette) and hubby chose the caprese (Mozzarella, tomatoes, and basil in a baguette). My Mickey was a mischievous boy who really made my hands and mouth messy (lol)! However, it was quite tasty if you could manage to eat it. Likewise, the caprese sandwich looked pretty hearty in terms of the amount of mozzarella. The ingredients were fresh and were made to order. The menu is pretty extensive. Other than sandwiches, they have pasta, soups, panini, and antipasti. We were the only patrons in the house, but the workers were busy working on some catering orders. That's a shame that the Subway next door still gets business because it's a mockery of Chicago-style Italian sandwiches. Calabria Imports is way better for sure! This is located within walking distance from 103rd. St./Beverly Metra station. The prices are comparable to a "Subway" sandwich that's SO all-American (I guess Americans run on corporations...Well, I thought the founders wanted Capitalism). If you like the old America, support the local business then. They also sell some light Italian-brand grocery items and house-made pasta sauce. The dining area is pretty spacious. Overall, it's a lovely lunch spot in the neighborhood.

Been going here for awhile and have always liked it but some prices are just a rip off. Do not get the Curley fries which cost 3.99 for about 5 fries. Absolute rip off.. Disappointed being a loyal customer.

I treat this deli like a restaurant...because it is a restaurant too. The weekly specials are fantastic! All dishes and sandwiches are great! I highly recommend it for a lunch if you're looking for a relatively quick stop. A good value.

Great deli, great food and great people. I've been going to this place since it was in Blue Island and I've never been disappointed!!! They also cater to all events so check them out.
(5)Pat H.
I have had most things on the menu and I like everything I've had. I usually get the chicken Cesar wrap or buffalo chicken wrap. The home made chips that come with the wraps/sandwiches are great.

Office now located in the city instead of south suburbs so I spent all last week looking for good lunch spots. After reading many reviews I headed to Calabri Imports in Beverly. I got the blue heaven with steak. Great sandwich and handmade fries come with it. I cannot wait to come back and try different sandwiches. Staff is very friendly and the service is quick.

Friendly staff, good food, and a nice selection of branded and self-branded Giardiniera sauce, make this the go to place in this area for good Italian American food and provisions. The bakery goods are top notch, and the meatballs were good. But the house branded Giardiniera is some of the best I have ever had. Truly amazing stuff. The girls working here the night we visited sold us some "nut cups" that are made by someones grandma and are yummy and go well with coffee. Just a bunch of friendly people here selling some great food. Excellent place.

Warning! If shopping do not go into Calabria hungry! Every time I go I can not resist all of the wonderful fresh homemade Italian specialties. I love the bruschetta and fresh ricotta in the deli, the fresh bread from Molino and their homemade pasta and soups. I usually get the pizza set ups and stock up on the fresh Romano cheese. Often I do all of this shopping while waiting for a dinner or two to go because I can not wait to go home and cook. What a delicious dilemma to have. Thanks Calabria for being there when I get off the train and have a hungry family to feed!

I feel lucky to have this little gem so close to my house. We stopped in today and took advantage of their special - buy 2 foot long subs and get one free. Huge subs, totally delicious, and more than enough for 4 adults. Staff is also really friendly. Our toddler was getting antsy waiting for our subs, so the guy behind the counter sliced our daughter a fresh slice of cheese for a little snack. This place will be a weekly stop-in for us.

This used to be a good Italian deli, and in some ways it still is. The lunch meats, cheeses, and breads are good. However, the formerly good buys of the frozen dinners & soups are no longer. In fact, they have gotten very bad over the last few years. Portions have been cut back dramatically and quality has suffered. Made to order sandwiches are decent, but the hot soups (much like their frozen counterparts) are not good. I recently had to toss an $8 frozen soup because it was so bad - no flavor and missing ingredients. And it wasn't the first time I found a soup deficient from its labeled ingredients. Too much money spent on wasted food. Unfortunately, too big a gamble to go back.

Best italian deli around !! Everything is so fresh and home made . Perfect place to just stop in and have a sandwich .
(5)Karen M.
Love the chicken blue heaven sandwich. Great take out dishes for dinner! My family loves the Italian beef set ups! The employees are very nice. Deli counter offers a great variety of meats, cheeses and salads.
(5)David N.
Visited twice now for their breaded eggplant sandwich, and have yet to be disappointed. Plenty big and packed with thinly sliced eggplant. A slight attention to detail during construction would help, as the marinara and cheese have been inconsistent, but it has all the makings of a 5-star meal. Add some hot giardinera, and its a meal fit for a king. Dining in will net you some of their homemade chips, but they're nothing worth waiting for. Grab a sammie and some napkins...you're going to need them.

Great Italian place in a Irish neighborhood because we all know that Irish can't cook!God rest my mother she burnt & boiled everything this place is got excellent flavor its my third time here and I think it is awesome! They have chicken noodle and minestrone soups every day 12 ounces for $2.99 32 ounces for $ 6.79

Great Subs - love the italian! And super easy and delicious pizza set ups!

Go to the deli here about once a week, sometimes more! We often get the coupon for the 3 ft sub in the Beverly Review! Great deal on great subs! They have some of the best macaroni salad on the south side, only once did they switch it up the recipe, but the next time I went it was back to normal. Thank God! I would suggest you get the Italian chicken salad and add it to your spaghetti with marinara or on top of a salad. It will take your spaghetti and salad to a whole new level of deliciousness. The homemade potato chips are also a special treat. Fresh and made to order. For some odd reason I have never really eaten any of their hot sandwiches. After reading all these reviews I am questioning why I have never had the blue heaven before and how fast I can get there to get one!
(5)Theresa C.
I absolutely love Calabria!! It's so good that I'm willing to drive from the nasty suburb of Naperville to here (with gas at $4 a gallon) just to get a sandwich. To me, that's devotion. I like to play it old school, no hot pressed sandwiches for me. I went with the Italian sandwich and a cup of Shrimp Bisque. The soup was quite tasty and I don't think I came up for air at all. I kept wanting to eat it, it was that good. The Italian sub was excellent! All the flavors of the Italian meats, cheeses and spices literally melts in your mouth. I've really never had a sandwich that good before Calabria. And yes I'll say it...definitely meat-gasm for sure. Nothing beats a freshly made deli sandwich. You just don't get those flavors anywhere else, especially from a cheap chain sub shop. Love, love the place. It's definitely a place to make a special trip just to enjoy one of their sandwiches. Totally worth it!

I am handicapped and getting into places and ordering stuff can be a problem This place is very understanding and cooperative. I try to order on off hours so I won't disturb the workers there - and - they have been absolute ANGELS! The food is incredible - their home made potato chips (comes with hot sammies for FREE) are fantastic. They make spagetti with meat sauce that is TO DIE FOR! Great Sunday gravy (ragu). The prices from the deli counter are wonderful - and their home made pecan crescent cookies melt in your mouth. Italian food from here is a tiny bit of italian heaven!
(5)Dee D.
I've been eating here since early teens, and I will continue to be a regular customer! Local guys and gals who work there really care about your experience. I love the place, try their Blue Heaven sandwich. You will be sold!
(5)Linh L.
Lasagna was nasty. Beef sandwich was good. Fried were delicious. Tirimisu was probably the best I ever had. I have to come back. I think the lasagna was a huge flop. :( Gotta come back so I can love it like everyone else.
(4)Jason A.
First, I would like to thank the reviewers that came before me. You convinced me to come here, and to order the Blue Heaven. The Blue Heaven, it was unbelievable. The steak was kind of Philly like, in that it was thinly sliced and chopped, slightly charred and crispy, as well as tender. It had a great beefy flavor, mixed with grilled onions and plenty of blue cheese under it that had melted slightly. I'm not a french fry person, but I finished all of them. They were steaming hot, very crunchy, and seemed to be slightly battered or something. They were certainly worth getting, and came with my sandwich. The natural sodas they have come in a myriad flavors, and are made with ingredients like "pure cane sugar" and "cherry juice." A child could pronounce all of the ingredients. They don't have fountain pop, but with flavor like Black Cherry, why would you want fountain pop? The deli itself had great prices. Muenster cheese was $2.99/lb, and off the bone ham was $3.99/lb. Even though we had to pay for metered parking, we'll be back.
(5)Colleen L.
Started going here about a year ago for sandwiches which are awesome, but it is now a regular stop. Won't go anywhere else for deli meat and pizza setups. Prices are great and the freshness can't be matched at the big grocery stores!
(5)Barry J.
Authentic Italian deli, formerly of the more working class Blue Island neighborhood. High quality domestic and imported Italian staples at reasonable prices. Carried out two sandwiches from their daily lunch specials menu. This menu updates weekly and is posted online, check before going if you're one of those be prepared types. "Chicken Fontina" - Crispy chicken on a gourmet wheat bun w/sliced fontina, deli mustard, lettuce, & tomatoes w/fries. A little heavy on the poupon but tasted great. "The Fresh Tomato Panini" - Fresh mozzarella on a 6" pretzel roll w/tomato vineger, red roasted peppers, & fresh basil w/a .33 bag of chips. Loved it. This one was just a little heavier on the balsamic than I care for but it was a fantastic sandwich. Nice families were eating in at the spacious, clean dining area. Enjoyed some great samples of pasta made with Italian sausage, pesto and artichoke, and some locally-made gelato. Friendly service all around. Keep up the good work guys.
(5)Lana C.
Pizza set ups are good. Beef sandwiches are great, with fresh au jus and not the greasy nasty portillo's kind. Chips are great. I've liked all the different sandwiches I've tried and the mini cannoli are tasty as well. They sell THE most delicious pecan cookies ever, which I guess a little Italian lady makes from scratch. I will say though, that I liked the Evergreen location better, as the staff were much friendlier and welcoming. I'm sad that location closed, but the food is the same over here, and overall very good.
