Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

Truly authentic Mexican food in Charleston, IL? My how things have changed since I graduated. I sure do miss La Bamba's, but this place is a great sit down restaurant. I understand the food is the same as El Rancharito, but Los Potrillos seems to do it way better. Somehow, they look like they've been there for 30 years. And the staff barely speaks English, which is a good thing! The chips and salsas were awesome. Queso dip rocked. Cheese enchiladas were on point. Check it out!

Out of the hundreds of choices on the menu I only get one. The Acapulco Special is the BOMB! The manager at this restaurant is one of the best I've seen. He runs a tight ship and is friendly and accommodating. Great prices and good service. If you like grilled chicken, beef, and shrimp you have got to try the Acapulco Special you will not be disappointed and you may be like me and not even need a menu because that's all you will ever order in the future. I've had Acapulco Specials elsewhere around Mattoon, Arcola,Tuscola, Arthur and Paris and they can not hold a candle to here.

One of the best Mexican restaurants I have been to and outstanding service. Highly recommended!

I used to go to El Rancherito on the regular, but after a couple not-so-good meals there, I made the switch to Los Potrillos. The beans and rice aren't all that great. I've certainly had better, and if they improved I would bump this place up a star rating. That said, the things they do well are pretty good. The cheese dip, like most people mention, is worth getting (although they do put it on a lot of entrees too, so I'd pick one or the other - not both). I love mixing in a dish or two of salsa. Their chunky salsa is fresh and very good. The Caldo de Pollo con Arroz (Chicken and Rice Soup, entree-sized) is a nice surprise, and quite good. The enchiladas are standard but definitely tasty. I'd say my favorite entree to order is the Parrilla Suiza, which is chicken/beef grilled with peppers, onions, zucchini/squash, and tomatoes and topped with cheese. You certainly get a bang for your buck with the "Super Special Dinner #1", which features a taco, an enchilada, a tamale, a chalupa, a chile relleno, AND rice and beans. Definitely a good deal for a college student. The Horchata is homemade and really, really good. If you're getting takeout, consider getting an order of horchata to make milkshakes later. You will not regret it. Portions are a great size, and you can usually get two meals out of a single entree. Prices are very reasonable. Service can vary, but if you're dealing with the manager (who is quick to call you "amigo" or "amiga"), you'll get nothing but professional, friendly, prompt service. When comparing LP to El Rancherito, it's definitely better. When comparing it to Don Sol in Mattoon, the line gets a little more blurry - LP has better prices and portion sizes (and better cheese dip), but I prefer the grilled items and margaritas at Don Sol. It all depends on what you're in the mood for.

Los Pos is the restaurant of choice if you're looking for quality Mexican food in the middle of the cornfield. Last time I was there I had the enchiladas suizas, which were extremely good. Oftentimes, enchiladas can be overcooked and tough to cut through and eat. Not so at Los Pos. The delicious margaritas are also recommended. Plenty strong and reasonably priced. Only complaints are that the sides are somewhat overpriced and the dining area can get pretty loud pretty quickly. Otherwise, I definitely recommend!

It was not good. They give a lot of food, but not worth it.

"I don't always plan to visit Charleston, but when I do, I'll stop at Los Potrillos." And I thought the Mexican restaurant by my house was good..... On the Sunday I dined here, 'Los P' had $6 flavored margaritas served in a 26oz mug. I opted for the Pina Colada, and not only did it taste good, not only was it pretty strong, not only was it in a giant glass, but it was merely six bucks. Best. Value. Ever. All it needed was a pineapple wedge garnish and it'd be the perfect colada. As far as food is concerned, I had the combo plate #17, which was an enchilada, burrito, refried beans and rice. It's pretty hard to mess up that style of Mexican food (which they didn't), and the four 'salsa picantes' provided on the table ensured that my combo plate was sufficiently sauced. They must have known I was coming--a plethora of hot sauces is a must when I'm eating Mexican. The flan for dessert was great, and the free chips + 2 kinds of salsa that's included is always appreciated. I'd come back, f'sho!

Stopped here with my boyfriend before catching the Amtrak to Chicago. We both love Mexican and when we saw the place we figured we'd give it a shot. Here's the run down: the service is friendly and zippy. They have a large dining room with two sides. It wasn't crowded or overly busy, but there were always people coming in and out (and the restaurant is basically in the middle of nowhere to us city gals), despite the fact that EIU is out for the summer. So that means it has a decent reputation among the locals as well - at least that's what it means to me. The chips and salsa and pico were generous and good. Typical Mexican restaurant fare. Nothing extraordinary but good. What I especially liked was the special Vegetarian section on their menu. They had lots of combination plates for those us who do not eat meat. I ordered the "A", which included an enchilada, a small burrito and a tostada and beans. It was filling, cheap ($6.75!) and delicious. My boyfriend said that the fajitas here were THE BEST he'd ever had. They brought him a steaming plate of meat - chorizo, steak, chicken AND shrimp. Omfg. This dude is a beast. He eats all of the animals I don't eat and when he says it's a lot of food, it is. Along with the giant meat lovers plate he had tortillas, rice and beans and a little taco shell filled with sour cream, guac and pico. He paid extra for all the meats but he was happy and would not shut up about the damn fajitas. So if you're like him, you'll probably enjoy it too. All in all a good Mexican joint if you're in the Charleston-Mattoon area. 4 stars for the great prices and awesome entrees! Yum!

I love coming here to eat! The food is fantastic along with the added bonus of awesome staff.

Good Mexican for the price, better food than Los Rancheritos and a friendlier staff than don sol. Los acapulco, Don Pancho (?) and the tilapia tacos are definitely recommended

The food here was marginal at best. I really would find another place to eat in town before selecting this restaurant. It was edible, but it just wasn't good. I had a combo plate that was supposed to have a Chile Relleno, Cheese Enchilada and a Beef Taco. The enchilada came with beef in it, which wouldn't have been a big deal, but its the finely ground beef that actually reminded me of ground turkey. There was really no flavor to anything, other than the cheese they used on top of everything was oddly strong flavored. Ususally a mexican restaurant uses a "farmers cheese" which is typically mild, this was not which gave the food a strange taste. The beans seem like they were canned beans, nothing special here either. I must say the service was fast, the margarita was fantastic, but the food was not good. Also, worth noting - there was a large group of 18 people dining. They were so loud you couldn't hear anything else and it made it tough to carry on a conversation.

My fiance and I had our first date here as students at EIU, and we continue to go here every week. Love it!

Best Mexican restaurant in the area. I would visit this place for most celebratory occasions. The service is courteous and the wait is never long. A little crammed but not doesn't distract from the experience.

The place was very full on a Saturday night, but we were seated and served promptly. Service throughout the meal was good. The food is nothing special but not bad either. Margaritas were very good. The price was reasonable. The menu was more extensive than the average college town Mexican restaurant. The amount of food on the plate was appropriate.

Food was top notch, but was charged way too much and they would not budge, despite their mistake. They said the price on the menu was wrong, after I had ordered, but would not give in on their price. 3.99 for rice? After not giving in, and charging me their price, I was charged close to 20% in tax! Cashier said they would talk to the manager, but still took my card out of my hand and swiped it without my permission. Will not be returning.

Fun restaurant. Food predictably good. Authentic. Great beans and rice.

I am so glad there are a couple of bad older reviews here because that leaves more food for us people who really LOVE good Authentic Mexican food. I have always has a superb lunch or dinner here and we drive 90 miles to eat here. My husband loves their Tacos Al Pastor and I always have Steak and Shrimp Fajitas. The service is always friendly and prompt. This has always been a great dining experience.

So, we went here on a Saturday and it wasn't that busy, but it took a bit long to get service once we sat down. I had the Milanesa, a dish I get often at Mexican restaurants if they offer it. It was okay, I've had better Mexican food. Honestly, this is no place to write home about. I will probably not eat here again.

My fam and I went here after my brothers graduation from EIU. That's the only reason we would go to Charleston, IL. The food was very tasty, pretty authentic and the portions were large. I ordered some carne asada. Two pieces of skirt steak for you to cut up how you'd like. The service could have been a tad better. The one thing that just blew my mind was how CHEAP it was! 93 dollars for 8 people, including drinks, liquor and appetizer!! Amazing! I mean $2 Coronas, you can't beat that!

I'll pass.

The chips come to the table warm with 2 salsas: one blended and one chunky, both with medium spiciness. Large portions. My godmother is a regular and loves their enchiladas (you can order a plate with mixed varieties and she says they reheat well.) Another order was the Tacos al Pastor which were declared the best carnitas ever even thawed and eaten 3 days later. I had the something Especial. The shrimp were cooked perfectly, slim pieces of chicken and steak and I liked the cheese on top. Only drawback was it was salty. Thank goodness for the delicious pitcher of margaritas.

Raise your sombreros high for everyone here! The chicken is Mexican magnificence. The fried goodies are Selena and J. Lo in a pair of leggings and stilettos. This place is sumptuous down to your socks. Strum your Spanish guitar for LP, ladies and gentlemen, it's the real deal.

Favorite restaurant in Charleston, hands down. Delicious food and the prices are extremely reasonable. Can get a little crowded on the weekends, but nothing too crazy. Staff is pretty attentive, and the food is always delicious. Queso dip is a must when you go there. Soooooo good.

I have to say that I had quite an enjoyable time here while visiting friends in Charleston. The decor is quite... colorful. I mean the horse art was a little much, but really after you finish that first pitcher of margaritas on the rocks, who cares!Los Potrillos also has one of my favorite things which is that delicioso queso dip. I was s oexcited about it that I ordered tamales that were covered with the queso dip. It was a heavenly experience for me. I am salivating now just thinking about all that delicious food. It probably was not the best choice before a night of drinking, but as I said a few times at the restaurant, When in Rome...
