The ribs are incredible, definitely the best ribs in the area. The selection of sides is massive, and all the one's I've tried have been great. The pork egg rolls are a must-try item, it's a brilliant appetizer. The pulled pork is great, but the brisket wasn't very good when I had it.

Stopped at Grumpy's this evening feeling good to go on a rack of ribs. Let me first say the sides were very good and many of the sandwiches others were eating looked very good too; however i had ribs on my mind. Description on the menu sounded fantastic, but shortly after my ribs arrived, I was highly disappointed. Great cut of meat, but they came out of the smoker about 3 hours too soon. I would eat there again, but would not hesitate sending the ribs back if they weren't good and tender.

While traveling cross country, decided one night we had to have BBQ, this restaurant is out of the way, but we found it. I had high hopes, but they were dashed, fried food was greasy, the meat was tough and the portions not impressive.

Poor service, For the hour we were there our table was not visited but about 3 times. I found my glass empty more then full and nobody to interested in filling it. The food is mediocre at best. I found lots of fat in my BBQ sandwich.

Great BBQ on first visit, But came back on PRIME RIB night and it was Awesome! Big Slice of Prime Rib and cooked on the Grill, gives it a great taste, better that a regular grill in a restaurant! 5 STARS oh, And the Beer was Very Cold, especially on a Hot Day!

While traveling for business, I always like to try the local hometown restaurants. Last night I ate at Grumpy's Smokehouse in Carterville. It may be a well kept secret , but only because it is off of the 13 without a direct exit. The food was absolutely fantastic! I had a signature pulled pork sandwich which was finger- lickin' good. To compliment, the Cole slaw was tasty and the fried corn was something I had never experienced before - surprisingly, I could have even a basket of this! I even had the fried cheesecake - not on my normal diet - but well worth the extra calories! The staff was friendly as was other customers and my food came quickly and hot! I was surprised to find out that they have been open for a few years - great ambience with very stylish surroundings - not what you would expect from the outside of the building. I would highly recommend this for dinner or lunch for travelers or even this locals who have never ventured past the parking lot.

Great service. Extremely hard working staff. They have the best dry ribs around (yes folks no sauce added while smoking like some places). I will go back anytime I am in town. Thanks Grumpy's!

I was impressed with this place. Great pulled pork sandwich and french fries for dirt cheap. Pay special attention to the saying on the back of the waitresses' shirts for a good laugh.

5 stars for the prime rib...restaurant is probably 3 stars I live in Dallas and Marion is my overnight stop when driving to Indy, I found this new restaurant online (maybe Yelp) and thought I better check out the BBQ when I got there they were all pushing me towards a steak or prime rib...I guess saturday is steak night or weekends??? Reluctantly I ordered the Prime Rib, the girl brought out my salad and it was a little wimpy cafeteria looking thing and right then I thought "oh hell" I should have ordered BBQ (it is a BBQ restaurant) about the time I finished my salad the girl brought out a platter with the nicest piece of prime rib you could imagine...I was in shock, it looked great and it tasted even better. it was big 16 - 18 oz maybe bigger, and tender and tasty the baked potato kinda matched up with the salad, very basic kinda cafeteria style, I would rate both of those maybe a 2 but the meat was a 5 (more like a 10) TRY THE PRIME RIB...I can hardly wait to go back

While in town visiting friends, we decided to check this place out. It looks new- clean interior and exterior, and some undone construction by the parking lot here and there. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted by a nice waitress, who took down our order to go. We got out food in 15 min (from the time we placed it). So perhaps the other reviewer went on a bad day? The service was fast and friendly when I was there :) Ordered: The Grumpy (pulled pork sandwich), The King (beef brisket sandwich), The Smokehouse chicken (pulled chicken with chipotle mayo dressing). the friend who had the Grumpy said it was good, but not too memorable. It looked ok- ciabatta bread, could use a little more meat. The smoke house chicken got rave reviews, for the chipotle mayo. This was also on Ciabatta- which i rarely see in BBQ restaurants. Nice switch.. Now on to the star of the meal- my "the KING". The beef brisket was so juicy tender and plump. i LOVED it. I don't usually like brisket since they tend to overdry, where i've had them before. But this was good. They also gave ton of meat, so i pulled some to enjoy off the sandwich. I'd get this again. The sauces: original grumpy, hot, and sweet. we got original and sweet. The sweet was my choice- it went well with the brisket. The original sauce is too watery and vinegary for my taste. But BBQ being as subjective as one's favorite color, everybody wins with sauce variety. As sides, we ordered Sweet potato waffle fries, regular fries, and Onion rings. The onions rings are good, the fries are average, sweet potato fries were good, but I think they meant to give me ranch dressing (the best way to have Sweet Pot. fries!), but instead included whipped honey butter with it. Strange. Overall, i was happy with the meal. Oh and everything came up to $45. Not bad at all!

The place looked promising enough on the outside but that was misleading. The interior was kinda blah and poorly laid out, the food was high priced, the sides served in styrofoam, mac and chee was bad. Worst part of the experience was the lewd and sexually inappropriate slogans on the back of the staff's shirts. Truly offensive. Won't be back.

I was in Marion for a concert and was looking for a place to have dinner before the show. As a big fan of smoked meats, and being that Grumpy's was in close proximity to the concert venue, I decided this was the place to go. Unfortunately, I was disappointed with the food. I ordered the brisket sandwich. The brisket was edible, but not very good. The meat had a smoke ring but did not taste like it had ever been smoked. The texture of the brisket was very strange also. It was more the texture of a dried out roast beef. Brisket should be moist and have a snap to it when pulled apart. This brisket was dry and just broke when pulled. The available sauces were also lacking in flavor. The vinegar sauce was, well, a vinegar sauce. The other two sauces were rather uninteresting. My friend had a smoked burger which he said was pretty good. I would not make a special trip to eat at this place. In fact, if I was back in Marion again, I would probably go somewhere else.

I ordered take-out one fateful night... and this is my review. The Order: I ordered a family four-pack for the lady-friend and I so that we could eat and have leftovers. We got the brisket, onion rings, and hush-puppies. Right off the menu, nothing weird. Should be easy, right? The Ordering Process: Wrong. I placed my order for the Family of Four order of brisket and sides. Except, they never asked me what sides I wanted. Since I was staring at the menu when I was ordering, I asked what I got. The person taking my order didn't know I got sides with my order. He had to ask someone else. Pathetic. But I did get my order placed correctly. Getting My Order: If you order take-out, beware. There is no one around to actually talk to you. The sign said "Please seat yourself," so I did. The third person who worked there finally got around to talking to me. Finally, she got me my order after a few boring minutes of being there. Getting There: I have to say that this place is located in one of the most inconveniently located spots in Southern Illinois. It's on an access road off 13 with small, barely visible roads leading to it. I know the area and I had to look at a map multiple times and program a GPS to figure out how to get there. Food: The food was surprisingly awful. The brisket can best be described as "brittle." It was softish and tender, but stiff and only broke apart in specific spots corresponding to the grain of the meat; it was chewy if you didn't chew it correctly. And it had relatively little flavor. The onion rings were mediocre. Fine, but nothing special. The hush-puppies were offensively bland and boring. They were all an over-fried dough with exactly zero flavor. I can only imagine that it was the flavor of fried flower. Not even sauces could overwhelm the taste of this disgust. Portions: The portions are the only reason I'm not giving this place a 1-star rating. For what I ordered, I got a crap-ton of food. The "pints" of sides where ridiculously large-sized and a very pleasant surprise. I got two large containers of onion rings, which was great. Be very careful when ordering from/going to here...

We really like the smoked wings. We get them with sauce on the side because the sauce covers up the great smokey flavor. Saturday night is ribeye steak and prime rib night. My husband likes them both. Since I am compelled to get the smoked wings everytime, I have missed out on the steaks. It is true that the service was slow when they first opened, but it is greatly improved.

We visited on a Sunday afternoon. The restaurant is located on the southside of Highway 13 near the Marion Airport. The restaurant is decent size (probably 15-20 tables) with a mixture of booths and tables. There was a sign in front that said "seat yourself" so we did. Our orders were taken within five minutes. The waitress was nice enough. Our food came out within 10-15 minutes. We ordered the slice grumpy (sliced pork on bun), a fish sandwich, cole slaw, grumpy's taters, and the hashbrown casserole. The food was okay. The fish sandwich was better than the "grumpy". The restaurant is getting two stars for their lack of service. Once we were served our food we never saw the waitress again. The restaurant was not full or even busy. There were possibly four other tables there. There were four servers on. The three other servers passed by our table and did not ask if we needed anything. We didn't see the waitress until we got up to leave and needed our bill. Overall, the restaurant is okay. Definitely could get a better experience at the other BBQ Joint in Marion.
