I've enjoyed visiting this quaint place in Brookfield. It's a busy, colorful place, with great food (especially the al pastor - seasoned pork) and staff that are very clearly family. I drive 15 minutes for pick-up; the,s nothing anywhere near me that is as good (that I have found!) This is one of the few places that I have visited outside of the city proper where a ground beef taco actually have an authentic flavor - not just ground meat, but a delicate seasoning that mixes the beef and spices to that the favors mix in your mouth and leave a delicious aftertaste. Ah, authentic Chicago Mexican food! The burritos are great, also. I can say that they definitely have a good portion great tasting food for a decent price. The al pastor tacos, especially on the handmade tortillas, are something of an amazement, leaving the beef tacos far behind on the race. Actually, all of the tacos I've had are great with one exception: the steak. It was pretty average, which was a surprise, especially since that's typically my favorite. As I mentioned, they have handmade tortilla for the tacos. I can strongly suggest that the tacos are eaten that way; plain flour tortillas just don't do justice to the favors. Ordering ahead seems to be the norm for the place; good food takes time to make. Dining in and ordering are both sort of slow; plan ahead if planning to pick up. This issue alone has lost the a star on the rating; they need to get their kitchen act together. The interior has been nicely updated; the place stays clean, and the bathroom is very neat, though very small. If time is on your side, add a star to this rating; the place is worth driving to and stopping for.

We made the trek from Downers Grove to try this recommended place and it was well worth it. The food was excellent and the staff was very attentive. The place isn't expensive but it isn't cheap either. The only thing keeping it from 5 stars in my book is that it isn't really kid friendly with no kids' menu and the seating isn't designed to accommodate kids. Also, the place isn't all that comfy with bright lighting and wood chairs. But really, go for the great food and service!

My big taco day was built around going to this place, and they didnt disappoint. First we got there just as they were closing and they still made us food. The staff was amazingly nice and super friendly, plus I loved how the place was decorated. I was confused why my gf kept calling it Ralph's but now I get it...plus its hard not to like a place that has the words 'Burritos Mondays". We were there for taco tuesdays, and were easy the best of the four taco places I'd been today. I lov this place, and can't wait to go back.

It's the super-cute taco joint right on Ogden. Easy parking, good eats. Hubby digs the carne asada sandwiches. I dig the chicken tamales. Hint: the awesome flaming hot-sauce is the red one. The green is mild. New discovery: they were still open after we caught the first blues set at Berwyn's Harlem Avenue Lounge... though they did stack chairs on the tables while we ate. Still. Friendly, fast, affordable, authentic Mexican food. Now if they would only turn down the volume on the TV...

Had some fantastic pork tacos from this place. Get them mexican style (cilantro and onion) add a little of their spicy salsa and a splash of guac = money. Friendly staff, laid back atmosphere, reasonable prices. O, and did i mention they're open until midnight on Fri & Sat?! Perfecto Will def. be going here more often!

Preface: Mexican food has always been a personal fav, but more so not that I don't eat meat. It's a helluva lot easier to find something to eat on a Mexican food menu than it is with a lot of other cuisines. El Pasidito definitely won my vote with my visit here not too long ago. Not only did they not roll their eyes when I asked for a veggie quesadilla with jalapenos (apparently Mexican's don't eat veggie quesadillas I have found...) the girl who took my order said, " Wow, that sounds really good, I'm going to have to try that...jalapenos huh?" This place has a lot on the menu, with lots of variations to some of the classics. They also make their own tortillas! They give you an option since the homemade is more expensive...by about a dollar and is 100 percent worth it. I really enjoyed my quesadillas and they gave you a ton of chips for your guacamole. On that note, the guacamole was really good! Fresh ingredients and and just really good. The pico de gallo is also delicioso. The carry out wait was not that long and the guys in the kitchen seemed to be having a good time back there- service with a smile is always appreciated! Definitely hit this place up if you are in the area...you can dine in or take out and they serve beer. They also had SpongeBob playing on the TV's but no kids were in there....

This is premier Mexican food (they deliver, too). We've lived within blocks of La Cabanita for five years and order regularly but avoid it on Cinco de Mayo. Three years in a row, we TRIED to order food for 5/5 but have had bad service. The menu features standard Mexican fare: great tacos, tortas, burrtios and enchiladas. Friendly people, great service and tasty food with Jarritos soda and Mexican (real sugar) Coke available. Except for Cinco de Mayo, this would be a 5/5 review.

Great authentic tacos, and great people, too. A recent fire in the rear of the restaurant closed their doors temporarily, but they are back up and running. My wife and I didn't realize how much we love these tacos until they were suddenly unavailable to us. Go support this great business that does plenty to support the community.

Used to eat here all the time. Owner ralphie is great but something is changed with the chow. Beef tacos much greaser then they used to be. 99 cent taco night (Tuesday) has tacos that are about a third of the regular size. No wonder they're 99 cents! Also the waitress staff used to be prompt and friendly, now they're much younger girls who move slow and don't seem to care. Too bad

I've lived near this place for years and only tried it 2 weeks ago. I'm so mad at myself because now I know what I've been missing. Burritos on Monday are just $2.99 and others have mentioned Taco Tuesdays (99 cents!) so my new normal routine is take out orders on those days. The chicken burrito is excellent, tender and flavorful chicken and refried beans with lettuce and cheese ( I omit the tomato) is a great meal in itself. Tuesday I tried chicken, ground beef and pork tacos. I am VERY fussy with meats...if there is fat/gristle I just can't eat it. I knew the chicken would be good (burrito), the ground beef was very good but the pork was over the top! It was well seasoned, tender and a generous portion to boot at just 99 cents! The green (mild) salsa was great too...in fact it's the only green salsa I've ever liked. People there have been very friendly, orders are filled in a reasonable amount of time....my wait wasn't too bad considering the person ahead of me ordered 14 tacos. Some people were eating at a table near me, don't know what they had (didn't want to be rude and stare) but whatever it was came in huge bowls and smelled wonderful. I plan on trying several more things on the menu but you can't beat the daily specials.

Delicious food, ready quickly. We've ordered take out from here several times and will keep coming back! Have tried 2 other nearby Mexican places over on LaGrange Rd, and they're bland and unsatisfying. La Cabanita is the real deal.

  • Jessica M.

After reading Yelp reviews about how tasty their al pastor tacos were, we ordered some taco dinners for delivery. Everything was very flavorful. We tried their handmade tortillas and they were really good, too. They're worth a try. Their guac seemed to be missing something, but it was still pretty good. We will definitely be back! But...the prices seemed a bit high. We spent nearly $30 for dinner for 2.

I have not had grab and go Mexican as good as this, it beats many sit down restaurants. Try the beef, I know what you are thinkin but the beef is spiced great. The nachos will fill 2 people and you will like them so much you will try to fit the rest of the menu in your stomach.

  • ANNIE M.

Well I have tried this place a few times and I dont understand why they charge so much for their food, I personally think that Burrito Express is less expensive and they stuff their food with more meat, they just dont sell beer like these people do and as for the owners they didn't seem very friendly..

  • Peter S.

I've been eating here for the past year. Excellent taco's...try their chicken taco's....Mexican style (onion and cilantro). Staff is friendly, prices are great and the food is excellent. They're also open until 12am on Friday and Saturday nights.

I'm always on the lookout for good, cheap Mexican food, and La Cabanita is close to home, right here in Brookfield... They serve a fantastic carne asada taco! We order them Mexican style, with the handmade tortillas, and they are quite divine. We just squeeze some limes on them and dig right in. Wash it down with a Tecate! The food has always been delicious here, and that is what brings us back. The service has been hit or miss, but seems to have improved greatly on our last couple of visits. It's really got a kind of "hole in the wall" ambiance, but that is how I like my Mexican restaurants, so it's all good by me! I don't care for the fact that they charge for chips and Pico de gallo. I understand they are trying to make a living, but so many Chicagoland Mexican restaurants offer them free, you feel kind of cheated. But either way, those carne asada tacos will bring us back.

I moved to Illinois from Texas and grew up in California, so I know my taquerias. La Cabanita is the real deal. I stopped in on a whim while driving by today and had a chicken burrito. Everything about it was spot on, especially the seasoned stewed chicken. The staff was super-friendly, too. I will definitely be back and am glad that I don't need to be homesick for tasty Mexican food!

I ordered a Torta on Torta Thursday. It was pretty huge. It was pretty yummy. It was only $2.99. I will probably come back for Torta Thursday. I am even more likely to return if I can get a co-worker to go pick up our Tortas again. :)

It's usually hard to find good pozole that tastes like home. La Cabanita has the best pozole out there! And I like the fact that they have it available all week long, not just on the weekends like most establishments. They would have gotten 5 stars but the delivery is hit or miss, sometimes they do sometimes they don't. But the pozole is very worth the trip!

Got take out from here after having driven by and admired the mural for years. We were disappointed. The tacos were bland, wet, and mushy. We won't be back. Taco Taco on La Grange road is much better for takeout and there are plenty of much better sit down Mexican restaurants nearby.

A small authentic Mexican restaurant with great tacos! I always get the steak tacos with lettuce, tomato and cheese and I haven't been dissapointed.

Good tacos & burritos, Mexican breakfast good too! Taco Tuesdays = $1.00 tacos! Quaint little place with bottled beer & wine, delivery & takeout. Nice addition to Brookfield!

Warm beer, hair in my food and they charged my credit card 3 times! I had to call and drive there twice to get this fixed! Save your money and go somewhere else.

I think La Cabanita is great! It's typically my go-to when I want Mexican food. The patio area outside is nice, but can get really noisy since it sits by Ogden Ave and a lot of semi-trucks and traffic pass through. If that bothers you, take a seat inside. Their food is quality, but I think the prices are a little on the high side. Overall, a good place for Mexican food in the area.

  • Andrew M.

$99 taco Tuesday is easy for them to pull off, just ignore customers when they come in and sit at a table for 10 minutes. Won't be going back here, they don't really need the business, old lady stood laughing with 3-4 servers she should have asked one of them to wait on the only table inside, pretty weird but no mas'

  • Andrew B.

What a great little find! Good service, great food (shrimp and fish fajitas were delicious), and reasonable prices. What more could you want? True, it's a bit small, but the tables vary in height, there is a patio, and the single unisex bathroom is clean and well appointed. Muy Bueno, La Cabinita!

  • Jose G.

I'd love to give this place five stars but the two things I think bring this down to about a 3 1/2 for me. Those two things are: price and inconsistent service. It is definitely on the pricier side for Mexican food and I've had both great experiences with their service as well down right bad. The bad service was consistently when I called in orders and sometimes the driver would be rude but again, it wasn't very consistent and perhaps were just a few bad apples...? Their food is authentic but I think they have the best Milanesa (breaded steak) Torta in the sw burbs. Their carne asada (steak) is okay. Love their chips and salsa and their guacamole. Sometimes they have tamales available which are homemade and delicious. Their menu is big and have plenty of extra items most Mexican restaurants don't have so explore it a bit. Xtra note: they do offer delivery which is rare for Mexican food.

Small neighborhood Mexican joint, nothing fancy. The outside decor isn't appealing. But the food is really tasty. I've been here a handful of times. Friendly servers when dining in and quick take out service.. A bit pricey for tacos, but still worth it location wise for me. Decent proportions, fresh toppings, delicious salsa.... Will gladly return!

Can i just say yummy! Such a cute place, clean and colorful. And they have the real coca cola glass made in Mexico the real way with no corn syrup but cane! Enchiladas was the best for me! Cant wait till next time! Thank you

  • Brittany M.

The food is ok but the service is horrible . The lady is very rude and when I told her they messed up the order she insisted she was right . I used to order it when they delivered but I drove all the way there this time and back home with half of my food gone !!!! Never again !!!

  • Melody C.

They have great rice, rice water is kind of watered down and their pozole is alright, but their service is what got me.i told one of the waiters that my rice water tasted watery and asked if I could get a refund or change it. He just goes behind the counter, takes a sip, and asks the other waitresses if it tastes water down, and never comes back to me with an answer. Well then. I'll definitely give them another chance because according to my boyfriend they're one of the best in Brookfield with good prices.

I am so disappointed! After looking forward to their 99 cent tacos on Tuesday for my family, I arrived at 4pm and the tall, gray-haired male told me not now because it was cinco de mayo. Really? How can people do business like this? The customer service of the place is awful!!! The parking is a hassle!!!

    (1)
  • Davin L.

The food is decent. And in Brookfield, that puts you ahead of most of the pack. Wish they were open a bit later so when I take a Galloping Ghost break, I'm not always stuck with Tony's or Brixie's.

After my most recent visit to La Cabanita, I felt I had to lower its rating to three stars. I think the food is still quite good, but I have some issues with their menu and portion sizes. First up - they break one of the cardinal rules of dine-in Mexican... they charge for chips and salsa (I think it's technically chips and Pico de Gallo). Not just a little either; I think it was $3.75 (!) for a small-sized portion. This seems bizarre in a place where the entrees venture up to $15. My other issue is with the famous $0.99 tacos on Tuesday. I freely admit this is an incredible price for any taco found outside of national fast food chains who rely on things like "taco meat filling." However... I was dismayed to see how little ground beef or chicken was actually in the tacos. In the case of the chicken - we're talking a heaping tablespoon of protein. Maybe a bit more for the ground beef. These were certainly the smallest taco portion sizes I'd ever had at a real Mexican restaurant. If I were paying the normal price of $2.50 for these little guys, I'd be pretty miffed. Are the tacos worth $0.99 on Tuesdays? It's not a simple question. Maybe your best strategy is to co-opt a technique used by fast food devotees who order a couple of small cheeseburgers, remove the bottom bun of one of them and the bottom of the other and stack them up together. If you put the fillings of two tacos into a single tortilla, it becomes normal. Apart from these issues, I do like the food here. The elote had a nice flavor - the corn was complemented by the mayo, grated cheese and spice. I also like the flavor of the refried bean here, though I prefer mine a bit less liquidy. The tacos, especially the chicken, taste really good, in spite of their wee amount of protein. I'd encourage La Cabanita to remove the page from their playbook which they borrowed from the airline industry -- downsizing and nickel and diming may not be the best strategies.

First off, if there was a 4.5 star option, I would pick that; however, there is not... So, my group went in for lunch, and sat down. The waitress was nice, and helpful. Kept the chip basket and the salsa bowl full. The chips were not super fresh but not bad, but I think they makes them there (I think!). The salsa was decent, not the best, not the worst. One guy ordered a steak torta, and he said it was really good; two guys had burritos, they also said they were good; I didn't try them, but I thought I would tell you all. A coworker and I each had a ground beef, a chicken, and pork a taco to start (all with onions and cilantro), it was taco Tuesday after all. They were pretty small tacos, I know it's taco Tuesday, and you are making the tacos cheap, but still. The meats have really good flavor. None are dry, which is one of my main deciding factors on whether or not to go back to a Mexican place. So, since the tacos we had were so small, we each decided that we needed another taco. We each got a steak taco, on HOMEMADE corn tortillas, with onions, tomato, cheese and lettuce. The full price tacos are much larger, and the fresh tortilla is really good. We will definitely be going back, I believe it just became our Mexican restaurant of choice. I will skip the taco Tuesdays, and just go for the full price tacos on the homemade tortillas. I will also try their beans and rice next time, and the burrito, and the torta.... and probably everything else.

Overcharged after being anxiously reminded for the last 35 minutes by the waitress that they close at 10pm. We ordered, ate there, and made it home by 10:05pm. I was a big fan, but my first timer husband never wants to go back. We were just overcharged by $1 on the dinner, but it was icing on the negative experience. Is this ok by you Ralphy? I was a long time customer. Funny enough, I was there once and a piece of plastic from the to go bags was accidentally in my Chile Rellano taco, but the waitress was so plesant and made up for the experience simply by apologizing and removing the item from the bill.

This is my go-to Mexican place in Brookfield. The tacos and burritos can't be beat. I am particularly fond of their salsa; tasty and a little bit spicy. The only reason I wouldn't give it five stars is their guacamole is a little hit or miss.

  • Mike H.

Slow slow slow. Took 2 hours to get the cold, pricey food. The girl taking the order was incredibly rude....real joke. $42.00 for 3 steak to co dinners...Really. I would rather eat at to co bell. Its that bad....

I've never had a bad meal. Takeout is mainly what we order and I have never been disappointed. My new favorite is the elote, in a cup, smothered with creamy spicy limey deliciousness. I prefer to not order the full meals, it's too much food! Great value, delicious and fresh food made by super friendly people.

I love this place...I love Brookfield in general. They have an extensive menu for such a small place, and everything we've had has been good. However, the stand out is the AVOCADO TOSTADA!! I'm not a big veggie person when it comes to Mexican, but this is one of the best things I've had as far as Mexican is concerned. Staff is nice, you can watch them cook your order. Always a bonus in my book. In a town full of Mexican choices, this is a stand out.

  • Bill O.

Ralph's is a solid Mexican joint, whether you want a burrito or a dinner. Good horchata, and they have Mexican Coke and Jarritos. The steak burrito is my yardstick for quality Mexican joints, and it's a solid bullet...great steak, and the veggies are always fresh. The restaurant itself is clean, with some heavy paintings on the walls - they are a tripper's dream! They always have good table service - but PLEASE tip here folks...I left a 20% tip after good service and they remembered my order the next time I came in. Like I said, good place. Enjoy!

I am harsh on Mexican restaurants. For good reason, I have been to some amazing Mexican restaurants here in the states and in Mexico. I was eating Mexican street food way before Bayless was on PBS showing regular folk Mexican food joints and I was born in Mexico so I KNOW Mexican food. La Cabanita is pretty close to being authentic. They have a bin, full of ice, with bottles of Mexican sodas and beers just like they do in Mexico. They let you pull out the ones you want, just like in Mexico. They make home made tortillas to order just like in Mexico. They make to order churros of your favorite flavor just like in Mexico. Are you getting what I'm saying? Its almost just like your in a real Mexican restaurant in Mexico! I personally had the Chile rellenos tacos and they were delicious. I had them with the Mexican made to order tortillas. Their home made salsas were wonderful, not too watery and not over powerful. I want to go back soon and try their other dishes because what I had and what I saw other people have made it feel like you were in Mexico.

This place is great! Very friendly staff (Ralphie, his mother and sister!) and nice recently upgraded decor. My husband and I are total fans of this place. It is always quick and easy. The carne asada tacos on homemade tortillas are the way to go-- Mexican style --- that is with cilantro and onions!! So good! They have changed their guacamole since the last time I was there for the BETTER! It was really, really good (before it was bland). I love their chips and salsa. My husband had the pork stew and loved it. Really a cute and fun place.

Good, simple, Mexican food! A bit pricey when compared to other "taco" places, but it is good. The homemade tortillas are excellent and a great selection of jarritos soda if you are a fan.

Just had tacos (pork) from here this Tuesday and they were really, really good. I will be going back again for their weekly special. We also had the guac and chips. The guacamole was good but the chips were just not that great. Very pain and did not have a ton of taste. Maybe we got a bad batch?

La Cabanita is a great neighborhood joint for Mexican food. The burritos are awesome and the Chile Relleno dinner is absolutely delicious. They are busy, so don't expect super fast service. We have done both pick up and delivery. Delivery was within an hour and the food was hot. Totally worth the wait.

This place is cuter than your average Mexican takeout/fast food place, and they have beer. We like beer. And it wasn't expensive beer. We like cheap beer. We went on one of those Sundays when you're out dinking around all day and then you realize that you haven't eaten since 9am and the sun is sinking fast. Mexican is always good on those days because they throw you a basket of chips as soon as you sit. And they did. With some really good homemade salsa. It's a small little place (thus the "ita") but the food is really good and reasonably priced. I had the chile relleno dinner, hubby had something called "Ralphy's steak" something or other that looked kind of like hash. He said it was good. The waiter was really quick and friendly (yes they have table service). He may have been Ralphy. We were too busy eating to ask. My dinner was excellent. We'll be going back again, I'm sure.

The food here was incredible and the service was speedy with a very friendly staff. They had the t.v. on the whole time, which I found distracting, but this is a great place for a quick, inexpensive, tasty Mexican meal. And their homemade tortillas are amazing!!

I've been going to La Cabanita for many years now, and I'm never disappointed. The people are friendly and the food is fantastic. I highly recommend the tacos - get them "Mexican style" on the house made fresh corn tortillas with cilantro and onions for a real treat. (My favorite is the Chile Relleno taco.) The tortas are authentic, with the softest bread. I'm also a sucker for the Elotes, fully loaded corn on the cob with mayo, cheese, and chile powder. This is my go-to option when I'm trying to figure out what to eat. They are open until midnight on weekends and they have delivery.

Hands down the best mexican food I've had in the suburbs. Carne asada mexican style on homemade corn tortillas is heavenly... and heavy on the onions and cilantro... just the way I like it. Make sure you leave room for the desserts. Tres leches is to die for, but then again so is the flan. Great service from the daughters of the owner. This little storefront should be on Check Please!

Before I start this review just know if this review was based on the taste of the food it would be 5 stars all the way! But unfortunately as much as I want to give then 5 I can't because the service and cleanliness of the restaurant weren't up to par. There was a very foul smell emanating for somewhere throughout my entire meal and me and my friend were both put off by it.

The guacamole is more onion and tomato than advacado. Quesadillas have no cheese. They skimp on the important ingredients and the food is poor quality. Perhaps they were just having a bad day.

Okay something is going on here that's gotta be fixed. The last two times I went the red salsa was completely off. It was spicier and very vinegary. Since there's no vinegar in homemade salsa it makes me think it's old and fermenting. New owners? New cooks? What's going on!? :(

I am sorely disappointed in this place. I have been coming here for YEARS and I finally had enough. While the food is still good, the service is horrendous. Ever since the Burbank site opened, the Brookfield site has gone downhill dramatically. I had placed an order to be delivered. The person on the other end had all sort of problems, but finally got the order taken. She related my order back to me in full, gave me a total, and told me the time for delivery (an hour). About an hour and 15 minutes later the food arrived, however I was missing part of what I had ordered. I call to complain. As I am trying to complain, their fax machine is going off and they said they would call me "right back". 10 minutes later I call them again. After many minutes of back and forth with them telling me my burrito never got it ordered (and, yes, I will admit I was pissed and being a bit of a jerk), I finally told them I wanted my order delivered within 15 minutes, I would pay for it, but I would not pay the delivery.... That's all I got out. I got hung up on. Now then, in reviewing what I had ordered and what it cost, I got overcharged somewhere along the lines, even though I was told my burrito was not made. Delivery charge is $2.95 (check their website, it's right there), I was told on the phone it was $5! Even with that excessive charge, I was still over charged by another $2 some place, even after factoring in taxes. By the way, I NEVER got my receipt from the driver, so I have no idea what it said, only what I was charged. Anyway, I am done with this place. I place I used to love and visit no less than once a month, sometimes twice a month! See ya, Ralphie...

Nothing fancy, just a little neighborhood place. But there's something special. They have the most amazing chicken tacos and their al pastor is my favorite ever. While I'd say their guacamole is nothing to write home about, their homemade tortillas more than make up for that.

I've driven past this place many times and didn't go in because I wasn't impressed with the exterior, but we tried it last night and have found our new fave local Mexican restaurant! You MUST try the handmade tortillas. Salsas are good, too. We both had steak - mine tortas and my husband's tacos - and the meat was excellent quality and had good flavor. Not the fatty beef one often finds in Mexican foods. Also very clean, good service, and attractive, colorful decor. Small (about 12 tables), but the flow of business seemed to be just right. Carry outs available, too. We'll be back!

Will definitely stop by again when I'm in the area and craving Mexican food. The place is small but yet charming and the staff is really nice and accommodating. The highlights here: the tacos Mexican style (with onion, cilantro and lime) with homemade tortilla, guacamole, the horchata and the flan. I'm still salivating while writing this review. Truly authentic Mexican food, in a no frill setting with good service, cheap prices and clean bathrooms, what else do you want? They even have beer and wine if you feel like partying it up.

Open 'til midnight on Fri and Sat. I decided to try the Friday special-- tostada's for $1.99. When I called for pick-up the lady was quick and friendly. (I have otherwise only called on Sunday nights when they are likely slammed.) Food: Tostada was a bit greasy, but, hey, it's homemade Mexican. We got vege, pork and ground beef. Each was good, and absolutely worth $2! Place: Parking will never be a problem-- they are next to a lot. They have a nice, big outdoor area which must be really nice in summer. The place is really cute and clean (painted traditional multi-colors). They sell alcohol. There is a huge TV screen (which backs up into the kitchen--- kind of funny, but very resourceful). Now that I've been there, I like this place a lot more, and will likely dine-in next time-- the experience makes it better.

Hooray for yummy, authentic Mexican food! Double hooray because they also deliver! This is the fifth time now that we've ordered from La Cabanita, and it has definitely become our go-to Mexican place in the area. Here in downtown La Grange we have a number of overpriced Mexican places that serve flavorless food at obnoxious prices. No me gusta. We hadn't had Mexican food in a long time until we discovered La Cabanita. We've ordered the steak flautas, steak chimichanga, chicken tacos, chicken quesadilla, horchata, tamales, and tres leche cake - all have been really good. The homemade tortillas are delish. I've never dined in at the restaurant, but pick-up and delivery have always run smoothly.

This place was due for an updated review... and an increased star. I frequent La Cabanita and they are clearly doing well -- they've stared building an outdoor patio, which makes dining right off of Ogden more bearable and the food still is lights out. This weekend I quite possibly had the best "al pastor" taco I've eaten... EVER. It was juicy, had a little spice, a little sweet, the perfect combination. Make sure you get the handmade tortillas and order your tacos Mexican style (with cilantro and onions). Delish!

This was a happy find! We had come across the street from Galloping Ghost and were delighted with this place. Bright, fun decor. Jarrito soda in an open cooler in the dining space was a nice tough. Horchata came a gigantic glass and was smooth, creamy and spicy - perfect for putting out the fire of flavorful food. Chips and salsa were GREAT - salsa was super fresh. I had a tostada that came with generous quantity of avocados. My companions loved their burrito and tacos. Service was warm, patient, quick and friendly. The place doesn't look like much on the outside, but do go in, if you are a mexican food fan!

I must say I do love La Cabanita. Authentic Mexican food. Great service with a few wines and beers to choose from. Michelada anyone? Tasty! Daily specials, Taco Tuesday, Al Pastor = Awesome, Steak Burritos. Great for lunch, dinner, or late night. They recently added a patio seating area. Love it. Definitely a go to Mexican eatery. Cheers!

Handmade tortillas! Amazing. Get everything mexican style. El Pastor burrito and the handmade tacos are amazing. Their service is excellent. Delivery, carryout and in resturant is great!

Super yum!! Try the Ralphie's Own dinner, SO good!! One thing many people don't know about this neighborhood restaurant is that they make homemade tortillas. So when they ask you if you want corn or flour, say, "neither, I want the homemade tortillas", and you will not be sorry :). They only don't get 5 stars from me because they consistently mess up our order when we do take out... Check your bag before you leave the restaurant!

After living in Brookfield for several years we finally tried this place last weekend. All I have I say is why did we wait so long!?! The food and service here are amazing. We ordered for take out but everything was prepared on time and was nice and hot still by the time I got it home. Like everyone says, the homemade tortillas are worth the extra charge. Torta was good and so were the beef tacos. No complaints and I will be checking out their outdoor patio before summer is over!

Definitely have had better. The only plus to this restaurant was the homemade tortillas of course, who doesn't love them fresh out of the tortilla press, and the pastor. They could definitely improve on their salsas and their customer service. I could not believe that for 4 of us, the bill was over $75 dollars. WOW I don't think I've ever paid that much for Mexican food. Needless to say, I will not be going back. Psshh I have my own tortilla press.

decent food, HORRIBLE, RUDE customer service! WOW, just wow! I ordered delivery last night and I realized they got my order wrong. I called and explained and the lady ( patty as she called herself) told me I WAS WRONG, that she took my order. I calmly explained that we are all human and people make mistakes. She CONTINUED to tell me I was wrong! I had the receipt right in front of me too! THEN she hung up on me! Are you kidding? So I called back and I was mad at this point. I asked to speak with a manager and she struggled with her words and told me the manager wasn't in. So I asked for a name....finally she told me it was Lorraine. She continued to be rude to me and I finally just gave up on her ignorance and hung up. I mean this was just stupid. I got a voice mail about 1 hr later from "Lorraine" ( which I think was this crazy "patty" just calling me back pretending to save her butt!) HORRIBLE! What a bad experience with RUDE IGNORANT people! Save yourself the trouble, order from somewhere else! Oh another thing, I got my order at 630pm, I sat down to eat at 7:45pm ( thats when I called and noticed) SHE QUESTIONED why I was eating so late! OMG! BECAUSE my kids wanted to go on a bike ride bc it was beautiful out! REALLY QUESTIONING ME?! Uh! I could go on about this chick!

Stopped in on the way to the zoo this weekend for a quick lunch. The waitress and other patrons were super-friendly and service was pretty good. We had a cheese quessadilla and a couple of their chicken and pork tacos with the homemade tortilla / Mexican style (cilantro and white onion) option and enjoyed them. The meat, especially the chicken, was very tender and juicy. Flavor was a little lacking in the meat and the pico de gallo but the hot sauce helped. My homemade tortilla seemed a little pasty and undercooked. My wife's was better. I would definitely come back here when in the neighborhood for a chicken taco, oh yeah, the horchata was pretty good too.

I did it! I did Taco Tuesday! My fellow Yelper Patty sent me a reminder yesterday that it was Taco Tuesday. I smiled to myself, "Oh yeah, that's right!", but didn't give it too much thought afterwards. As I've previously mentioned, Mexican food doesn't really thrill me. So I get home last night, and my husband says, "I drove by La Cabanita on my way to a call early today and it's all I've been thinking about. Wanna go?" I stood there, frozen, just blinking my eyes. "What," he says, "No?". "No....I mean, yeah! Yes! Ok!" Because I am not one that ignores profound signs that come my way. It was written in the stars last night that I shall eat Mexican food from La Cabanita. (Editors note: That is a TRUE story. Cross my heart! I did not make that up.) We arrived about 7:20, ordered our food about 7:30, and got a beer apiece to drink while we waited. Tick tick tick tick tick....... The Bulls game was on. There was a family with a cranky baby that got up and left as soon as the kid started screaming. My husband and I talked about our day. Tick tick tick tick tick..... Halfway through my beer now. There was a plant on the window sill that I leaned over to touch to see if it was real or fake (real). I caught my husband staring at a zit I have on my chin so I leaned over and punched him in the shoulder. He winced. Tick tick tick tick tick..... At 8:05 a man who I assumed was the owner popped his head out from the kitchen and said our order would be ready in a minute. I was damn near starved, and now buzzed from my one beer. We approched the counter and he told us that he put some "extras" in with our order and sincerely apologized for our wait. We are pretty easy to please. If someone admits that there was a wrong doing, no matter how big or slight, and apologizes for it, they're OK in our book. "Extras" or not. When we unwrapped out goodies at home we come to discover that the "extras" included: bag of chips, large salsa, large guacamole (LARGE GUACAMOLE), and a piece of their tres leche (sp) cake. Um....holy *hit! We appreciated the apology as it was, now were looking at like, at least $10 worth of free food? I was floored. Our food was fantastic. I mean it. Now I know I've been eating at "fake" mexican places all my life. I had a chicken taco and a pork taco on a corn torilla, and a side of rice. Plus, the comped guac and chips. Fresh and authentic. Delish. Worth the wait, in my opinion. Next time I'll just phone ahead. No biggie. Friends forever, La Cabanita.

Went to La Cabanita for the second time on Sunday. It's a slip of a restaurant, really a fast food joint in Brookfield. They've spruced the place up and made the dining area nicer and cleaner. If you're dining in, they have table service which is nice but a little unnecessary. We had the tacos. They were pretty good and obviously, homemade so you've got Taco Bell beaten right there. We paid the extra $1 for homemade tortillas and that really makes a difference in flavor. I wouldn't make a special trip to visit here considering there are many Mexican options in nearby towns but it's pretty good, certainly cheap, and fast.

Delish AND inexpensive! Love this place for noncomplicated authentic Mexican dishes. A four star rating for the speed of your order; although, the explosions in your mouth make you forget how long you waited. I order their avocado Tostadas. Crispy and fresh with beans, lettuce, tomato and cheese. They offer breakfast too. I've had their Mexican Style Eggs many times. They use fresh cheeses and veggies so that the ingredients really pop when you bite into them. They sell sodas without high fructose corn syrup and have Taco Tuesday when tacos are...that's right ladies and gentlemen....99 cents!

I don't like eating there but for a take out Mexican place it is really tasty. I will never understand paying for chips and salsa when you dine in. Really? you cant come off with some c and s? I gotta buy those? But as far as flavor, quality ect, this place is delicious. Love the handmade tortillas. def worth trying!

I have been going here about 8 years. This place USED to be amazing, but it seems they just don't care anymore. I first noticed the meat not being as seasoned, veggies not as fresh. My breaking point was last visit. I ordered a quesadilla, and I saw the cook use a microwave to prepare it. Really?! I can do that at home. Sad.

The service was too slow! It was only 2 tables, us and another table! 2 waitresses. Ordered chips and guacamole and the lady forgot. I had to remind her. They came shortly before our food. The salsas had no flavor. The food was ok . But nothing special. No authentic flavor. The location is nice. Good parking. Outside seating. And the beers were cold! Nice design and decorations. Big plasma tv. But it doesn't feel Mexican. More like a mini Texas grill.

I stopped by La Cabanita before going to play some games at Galloping Ghost, which is right across the street. I tried a steak torta and the chips and guacamole. Both were decent, but nothing too special. I might come back for the food, but I think the lackluster service will keep me from returning. Each time we needed our waitress (to order drinks, to order food, and to pay) she was MIA for a good 15 minutes even though we were her only table. The other waitress seemed to be more attentive, so maybe we just had bad luck? I certainly wouldn't actively avoid this place, but I won't be rushing back either.

Went last night for their little Cinco de Mayo festivities. They had a bounce house up for kids to jump in, tables set up outside with great music playing. It was a lot of fun. Their food was delicious as always. However, this was the first time I had dessert. Supposedly their flan is awesome, but I don't like flan. I had a churro, it was pretty tasteless. Maybe it needed more cinnamon? Also, their elephant ear was this rock hard dough with powdered sugar on it, not so appetizing. Still a good time, I just wouldn't waste my $$ on their desserts. mmmm 99 cent taco Tuesday!

Great tacos and quesadillas!. Service staff is nice, but can be slow and inattentive. Atmosphere is usually cramped and noisy. Overall, the food quality more than makes up for any negatives. One of our favorite takeout spots for sure!

Best carne asada taco I have ever had! Would recommend this restaurant for take out as the service was not wonderful. The employees were nice but inattentive. The guac was delicious but mu husband was underwhelmed by the queso which was essentially processed nacho cheese.

We stopped in here one night with Osi V and her hopefully soon-to-be hubby! *Wink Wink O!* HAHA She found the place on here so we decided to give it a try. The place is TIIIIINY inside and has some major draft issues coming out of the wall unit air conditioner in the wall...but besides that... =] We had a guisado and tacos between the four of us, all with homemade tortillas, which were really good...but for like $2.50 a taco...I don't think so! The meats were good, the tortillas were better but the prices were out of control for a little hole in the wall place like this. I really don't think we would make the drive to come back.

Okay La Cabanita should be happy I gave one star! My boyfriend and I just moved to Brookfield and after a days worth of painting we just wanted some good tacos. We knew nothing about the restaurants in Brookfield, but saw this place while driving by and thought we would give it a try. We walked in and there was only four people eating. We wanted to eat there so we waited while the girl at the counter was on the phone. As soon as she hung up she went to the kitchen and then came back to the counter and didn't even acknowledge us while we were standing right in front of her. We didn't know how this place worked. Do we order then sit down or sit down and they bring us menus??? We were never greeted so we didn't know what to do. I said excuse me and she picked up the call that came in and never even looked at me. We were getting ready to walk out and then this other girl came from the kitchen and brought menus for us, so we sat down. Before we got to open the menu she took our drink order and asked if we wanted chips and salsa? We said yes. It took about 15 minutes for her to come back over to our table and that's only because I waved her down. Again....only four customers in the restaurant. She took our order and I have to be honest. If you want good mexican food at least decent then drive down Cermak and head towards Berwyn only a few more minutes away. This was garbage. The beans tasted like canned beans. My rice was hard and my boyfriends was mushy. The steak tacos had absolutely no flavor, so we had to drench them in salsa. We get the bill and notice we were charged $3 for chips and salsa. WTF??? That was offered to us when we sat down and now your charging us? We got to the counter to pay and told the same girl that never acknowledged us before that we shouldn't be charged for that because it was offered to us. Had we known we had to pay we wouldn't have said yes. She rolled her eyes and went to go ask our server something and just walked away from us. She came back and said well she asked you guys said yes you wanted the chips and salsa. Okay did she just not understand what was just explained to her? I was so annoyed and frustrated we paid the $3 just so we can hurry up and get out of there. One of the worst places EVER!!!!!!! with the WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE! I will NEVER EVER go into this place again.

Mexican Potato Patties? What are those? Well, I found out over the weekend. A few of the meaties came out to the 'burbs for dinner and then arcade fun. As this joint is basically across the street from the arcade it was a perfect choice. It was considerably smaller inside then I expected. Lucky for us we showed up at the perfect time as no one was there. We pushed a few tables together and made ourselves at home. They have Mexican Pepsi and Mexican Coke (no corn syrup folks) and they come in the old fashioned bottles. I may have become a little overly excited about this. It's the little things in life. I ordered the Potato Patty Torta with just meat and cheese. The patty is a lot like a potato pancake or some flattened hash browns. I think I'd try it with a burrito next time as I'm not a fan of the torta shell. The service is friendly and attentive if not a little confused. The waitress obviously wasn't used to having a party of 10 smooshed into this small space. Eventually the food found its way to the proper recipient and everyone munched away. The bill was around $100 for all of us which is really not bad at all considering a few people had beer and dessert. Overall, cute place, decent food, and for me a very convenient location. I think I've found my new place for hangover food.

Customer service was lacking big time here. They do not have napkins at each table, so they will just give you a single cheap napkin that is as thin as toilet paper. You will definitely need more than one napkin, but you will have to go ask for one at the counter, since it will take a long time for someone to come to your table to ask how things are going. As far as the food is concerned, it is OK. If the customer service had been good, then I would have given this place 2.5 or 3 stars.

Very good authentic Mexican Food. They have excellent Elote ~ which is Mexican corn on the cob. Their Carne Asada is an excellent quality of meat. Their tortilla's are very good. I am a HUGE fan of their Taco Tuesdays :P

It seem like this is my place to stop on my way back from Menards.........and sadly on my way back from working out! Nothing like undoing your work out with some yummy Mexican food. I can't say that I have a favorite thing here. I just get whatever is on special. Like today I got two pork tacos for two bucks(sounds like Arby's add). What can I say, I'm cheep! If you find yourself driving down ogden in Brookfield, stop in, you will love it!!!!!!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
