The food is outstanding. We don't have many upscale steakhouse options in Antioch,IL. Whenever we want to treat ourselves, this is the place to go. The ambiance is nice, everything is dark wood and dimmed lighting. They offer booth's and tables for seating choice. The service is great. On our last visit we have a really engaging waitress and she did a fabulous job. The food is outstanding. the serve, 30 day aged steaks which is what my fiance had, pasta and seafood. I had a seafood pasta dish. All meals come with a basket of bread, soup or salad and then entree. My Fiance had a fillet cooked medium. He said it was juicy and tender and just plain out of this world. My pasta dish was equally outstanding! They have a decent size parking lot. We've only gone during the week, so we have not experience a significant crowd at the restaurant. Prices are fair. Most dishes range from about $12-$35 depending if you get something small all the way up to a cowboy cut steak.

Very nice restaurant. My steak has always been very good, flavorful and cooked just right. Other's have commented favorably on the salmon and pork chops. Waiters have always been very helpful, attentive and friendly. Nice atmospere, nice music playing just loud enough to hear. I have always enjoyed dinner here. It's not too pricey for the quality and generous portions you get. Nice restaurant for a date night.

First visit to this place was for a Saturday night dinner (~4:30 PM) in mid-Sept 2007. It wasn't crowded when we got there, but started to fill up around 5:00ish. I had lamb chops, my husband had a hamburger. We were happy with the pleasant, gracious server and the food, which was slightly pricey but portions were very generous. I got 4 thick chops cooked exactly to my specification. I couldn't finish them in the restaurant, it was such a large portion. I ordered a gin and tonic that was nicely made - it wasn't a call drink, but the gin was good, it wasn't watered down. I would've liked a green or other vegetable with my meal, but I didn't see any on the menu (a pdf download from their site). I didn't ask, so they 'might' have something other than the obsequious potatoes as a side dish. That is 'so' Midwestern - not a vegetable in sight except potatoes. You can tell they are VERY OLD SCHOOL. The menu is 'hearty', none of your downtown Chicago fancy stacked-up, bizarre combinational food. Rather typical chop house fare - steaks, seafood, pasta, burgers. They have one vegetarian entree - grilled mixed veggies, that also comes with a potato of your choice, because you want it, you know you do! They're open 7 days a week. See web site for hours. The google map Yelp shows for Johnny's is INCORRECT. It's on Route 83, between Grass Lake Road (on the south), and 173 (on the north). The photo I added is a correct map. SUNDAY BRUNCH BUFFET - No buffet menu posted anywhere-not in the restaurant, not online. Some 'steam tray' presented dishes which may vary. They had a guy behind a table slicing an extremely rare sirloin roast (NOT prime rib), he also made waffles and eggs to order. There were several covered steam trays, one w/ an unidentified cream soup, mixed veggies (nice! - steamed w/o butter), lamb stew, some kind of halibut dish, eggs benedict, sausage, bacon, french toast. There was a whole smoked/roasted (?) salmon, served with shrimp cocktail sauce (Why? A cucumber dill or honey-mustard sauce, but not shrimp sauce!). A large green salad bowl w/choice of 3 dressings - none of which were identified, rolls, a sweet table with presliced, assorted cakes, mini-cheesecakes, and a nice cinnamony bread pudding w/creme anglais sauce (it's like thin vanilla pudding). The fresh fruit was not ripe, but there was lots of it, 3 kinds of melon that were all tasteless, ripe pineapple (that was good!), pitiful overripe strawberries (in poor shape -brown spots all over - why did they put them out? Mimosas and Bloody Marys were $4, the Mimosa I had was good. The food was OK, I ate a lot, as did my husband. We'll probably go back, but won't rush there, it's just very close to where we live. Brunch is $12.95 per person plus tip, brunch only served from 10 AM - 3 PM, they return to the regular menu from 12-10. Our server was very good - helpful, prompt and pleasant, earned a nice tip. My impression is the kitchen at Johnny's is staffed by some non-American chefs. They do fine on the ethnic-y stuff (lamb stew!), but don't have the right cultural feel for some things (shrimp sauce with smoked salmon?). This is not 'haute cuisine', but it'll do. The place was packed. We went back again in Dec 2007, and it was really good. I found more vegetables on their menu (yay, fresh asparagus!). Also ordered a 14 oz. prime rib (on special), with sauteed mushrooms (whole baby Creminis) and grilled onions (very generous portions of each), without the ubiquitous potato, and with blue cheese topping AND bearnaise sauce on the side. Oh yeah, it was good. Somebody back in their kitchen actually uses real butter in their sauces. My hubby had a strip steak and fries, he's kinda boring food-wise, but he was happy with his selection. Portions were so large that leftovers became 2 'extra' meals at home. I had a potent well gin and tonic and a glass of Sandeman's ruby port for dessert. We'll be back. :)

Went here for my girlfriend's birthday, and both of us had a great time. Nice, old-time steakhouse atmosphere. She ordered the Greek-style pork chops, which were tender and juicy, with a really great flavor. I had a filet, which although it was cooked medium-rare as I has ordered, was oddly just a bit on the dry side, but still quite delicious, drizzled with a truly tasty demi-glace. We both were REALLY happy with our appetizer of seared tuna with slices of ginger. We were so full, we couldn't sample the desserts, although they sounded pretty darn good. The house Cabernet I had would have good at even twice the price. The service was attentive and friendly, but not annoying. Will definitely go again when I'm up that way.

Johnny's has more to offer than great steaks and generously poured cocktails. The menu is big and they have an Awesome Sunday brunch

I have dined in every decent restaurant within a 20 mile radius of Lake Villa/Antioch and there is nothing close to rivaling Johnny's. I think I've tried just about everything on their menu from the calves liver and onions to their cowboy cut rib-eye steak and I have always been extremely impressed with the quality, portions and the service. There is no reason to experiment with any other place-they are the best in town-hands down.

In my visits to Antioch, I've mostly eaten in places where I thought the food was bland, atrocious or overpriced, or blandly atrocious and overpriced. Curiously, the cocktails are almost always decent and something close to cheap, and the waitresses are usually full of charm. So I had fairly low expectations as I walked into the Chop House--the menu seemed not inexpensive. But it was really good. I ordered a low-expectations special--a steak burger. It was bounteous and tasted of quality meat, and the shrimp bisque that came with it was really well-prepared and pretty delicious, really. Plus, the bread basket came with some pretty sinful little squares of cheese-covered rosemary focaccia--served warm, like pizza. And the cocktails were reasonable, and the servers were great. I doubt I'll ever order a steak, but that's ok, because the menu is varied. I do wish maybe they'd offer a few more salads. In short, I'll gladly go again.

A good local place for steaks. The outside and location can be deceiving for once you enter the place, it really has a nice finish. The steaks are good, come out warm and as ordered. The soups are also good, especially the clam chowder. They also do a good job with Lobster and Shrimp. Recently we went for Brunch and overall the spread that they had was good. I found the breakfast portion a bit better than the ham and roast beef they served, but nonetheless, I'm sure we will be back there for brunch. The wait staff is always friendly and prompt.

I went in here really wanting to like it but the food was very poor and half was cold they offered to replace the cold food but my kids had already finished their food so it wouldn't have worked out, it got two stars only because the the waitress was super nice.

Johnny's Chophouse... Great place for a birthday, family get-together, anything! I had the Tenderloin Tips which is beef tenderloin strips over linguine with a delicious Cabernet sauce. Very tasty sauce, meat was tender but not especially flavorful but still would recommend this dish. The 2 best dishes I sampled from our party were the Quatro Mignon which was absolutely flavorful, tender, juicy, PERFECT. Highly recommend. Also the NY strip was cooked to perfection. Both were amazing. The main courses were all amazing.... but let me tell you MY two FAVORITE THINGS about Johnny's 1. Long Island Iced Tea. These were the best effin L.I.I.T's I've ever had in my life. You MUST order one. 2. Saganaki. We ordered four of em, they're that good. Overall, great dining experience, waitstaff was great considering how large our party was. We will be back!

I love this place! Every time my husband Marshall and I go up to visit his family and friends we go there to eat dinner at least one night of our stay. The service was wonderful, and a nice atmosphere for having dinner with your friends.

I hadn't been in several years, but I don't remember it being so bad. I went on a week night, it was moderately busy. I had my wife, 2 kids, my parents, brother, and grandfather. The good was that they seaed us right away, the bad was pretty much everything else. In general the waitress was nice, engaging, and pleasant. But attention to the table was bad, and everything took for ever to come out. I suspect she might of been working to many tables but we could not see in to the other section of the resturant. The food for the most part was room temperature and took well over 90 minutes to hit the table. Several of us had significant issues. I had the ribeye which had little to no flavor and was at room temperature....very dissapointing but edible. We had 3 lasagnas ordered. Also not served hot, also made with a throat gagging amount of sugar in the sauce. My brother and father refused to eat there's. My wife had white sauce pasta of some type she was content with. My mother had ribs which she said tasted fine but where dry. Not a single meal was served hot, unacceptable. The one bright side they did comp one of the lasagnas on the bill. Bottom line, in years past I don't recall it being so bad, nor so good that I would return more then every 4 years. Even if the price points where half what they are this would still be a 1 star.

The owners here seem to really care. The service was really excellent and the food quality was great. I had the prime rib and while it was a little more cooked than I'd like the seasoning was nothing short of spectacular. Good place and I'll come back.

Sorry Johnny's but I didn't love it...Based on all the positive reviews maybe you were just having an "off" night. That being said, here are the reasons for my low rating (NOTE: I gave it the 3rd star for décor). * I ordered my 12 oz. top sirloin med rare and it was served a solid medium * The demi-glace on which the sirloin sat had a canned, preservative flavor and the consistency was too thick * Though the waitress was attentive but overly talkative * The music volume overpowered the room and made conversation difficult

Stopped on on a Sunday night and enjoyed my dinner so much i came back on Wednesday and ordered the same entree. Generous wine pours. Recommend the Mediterranean chicken. Service on Wednesday was less than optimal - another customer and myself waited 10 minutes before our drink order was taken. Regulars seemed to be taken care of before casual customers. Got tired of waiting for my order to be taken, so I called the restaurant from the bar and told them to he bartender needed some help.

My first review ever. Im feeling disappointed and slightly ripped off. We met a group of friends. They couldn't manage a "neat" scotch. I sent my dinner back and I never do that. When we brought our concerns to the management (drinks on the bill all wrong and different prices & tough over cooked broiled cod) the manager actually said "well, that's your opinion and you don't have to order it." They discounted $20. Not impressed.

I've been here twice now and I will not be back. The first time I went, we ordered the shrimp cocktail appetizer for 3 people and the portion was a joke. There were like 5 shrimp, which would've been only enough for 1 person, not 2 or 3. Maybe this is a nice choice for the area, but it was nothing special at all. The second time I went, my sweet potato fries weren't even edible, because they were so under-cooked and my entree was a ridiculously small portion, so I felt like I hadn't even eaten dinner. This place tried to be fancy shmancy, when they should've just focused on the food, which is one of the most important things to me, along with customer service. Also, our waitress was extremely pesty. My bf went with some friends and from the time we sat down, she wouldn't leave us alone for a second. I was irritated after being there for 5 minutes. She didn't know anything about their food or the menu whatsoever and and we didn't ask complicated questions. She seemed very overwhelmed and frazzled and the place was empty on a Friday night. I don't know if she wanted to go home or what, but she was so annoying, that she literally came every 2 mins, 3 mins max, over the course of our 2 hour dinner. My friends and I couldn't even have a conversation, because she kept trying to rush us and take our plates from us and she asked us if we needed anything and if we were doing ok constantly. She was overly-attentive. She never gave us a chance to need something, which would be ok, if it wasn't so frequent. We couldn't wait to leave.

We have never had anything but incredible meal and experience here and our meal last weekend was no exception. You get a lot of food and it always tastes great. I always get my favorite: the Filet Mignon. Always cooked perfect and delicious. I will continue to return and enjoy some damn good food!

  • Rosa C.

We went on a sat night and the place looked empty..not ever a good sign. Although it seemed we were the only ones there, the waiter appeared annoyed that we took time to look at the menu. She also didn't have any knowledge of the menu because she had to go find out the answers to our very simple questions about some of the menu items..I had the salmon..although I believe the fish was fresh, the creamy sauce that was layered over it was sour and did not compliment the dish well. We also felt very rushed by the waiter..I was with 3 others and none of them were that impressed with the food either. Too bad their fancy ambience doesn't match their mediocre food..I wouldn't go back.

Went there on a Friday night, parking lot was reasonably packed. Once we got seated, noticed overly sticky menus. Bread was subpar, beer selection was limited and tasted extremely watered down. Ordered a calamari appetizer which came completely saturated with oil. Ordered new england clam chowder, barely any clam, came way too salty. Ordered beef fettucine, even saltier than the clam chowder. The bathroom was dirty, resembled a park bathroom with different toilet colors in each stall. The waitress took forever to take the check away at the end. Waste of time and money, not coming back again.

We come here about once a month. Their steaks are very good, always cooked perfectly! Oysters are delicious! Their Greek Lamb Chops are amazing! Last night we came in for a birthday dinner, and were pleasantly surprised to find a steak and lobster special for $27.95! Once again, amazing!! They served us a bread pudding cake for dessert, surprise, and it was to die for- highly recommend! Our kids really enjoy coming here, they seem to have something for every taste, and you can dress up or down depending on your occasion.

Sunday brunch is wonderful. Food was AMAZING and the owner was running around making sure everything was full and customers where happy....he even gave us a personal thank you as we where leaving. We go here every Christmas Eve for a family dinner and now going to their brunch.....Yep, I'm a Loyal fan! NEVER disappointed.

  • Candy H.

Haven't been here in over 10 years and must say it was quite a disappointment. The calamari, rolls, and wine were good. That's it! Prime rib (one of the specials) was very tough. Mushrooms as a topping were so salty they were not eatable. My husband had boston clam chowder had huge chunks of potato in it and it also was way too salty. He ordered shrimp dejonghe that should have been called "ala mexican". Really? $75 for that? I guess there are a lot of people that don't care about the quality of food as they were very busy. Yuck! Certainly won't be back.

Absolutely my go to place! Great atmosphere. Great service. Family owned. I have never been disappointed with anything on the menu. They just painted. Updated the bar and upholstery, and added outdoor seating. I just had a party for 25 people in the dining room and they were amazing to us! We felt very pampered.

Had to go again, unfortunately, for a friend's birthday, my initial review on this place years ago remains. I only stayed for drinks. But, was told by my girlfriends they understood why I recommended going elsewhere. At least this time the waitress was more competent.

Had a great time! Valentine's day was the first time here. Food was great. Service was OUTSTANDING!!!. Make a reservation you will need it. we had steak and lobster. Very good with outstanding seasoning on the steak. Asparagus soup was homemade and wonderful. A must try. Sunday brunch $12.00 and worth it. Tv in bar only.

We have been going to Johnny's for several years and have recommended it to several people. Unfortunately, the place and some of the staff are starting down the road of Restaurant Rescue. I ordered the 14oz Prime Rib and about 6oz was edible. The petite filet was burnt char on the outside which ruined the taste of the meat. The lighting in the bar area tables is so dim, I was unable to see my meal. Our server was nice and kind, but there was another server who spent her time joking it up with some regulars for the whole hour. Now this is still a quality restaurant, but for the first time we will probably start looking for other options for steak houses.

  • Nicky S.

We used to go there quite often and we stopped because the food was not up to par. But this past weekend we decided to try it again. It was wonderful. The menu was streamlined and minimized (there were so many items on the old one). It was a nice atmosphere and I had the best scallop dish. Really good. My only complaint is the main dishes came way too fast we did not even get a chance to finish our soup and salads and the booths. The smaller booths are so tight that fitting 4 people in them is not comfortable. Otherwise it was very good. We will go back again.

This is a great family owned steakhouse in Antioch. It's really one of the better places to eat in town if you are looking for something other than bar food. It always reminds me of a 20's gangster hangout, with the dark woods and all the historic pictures of town hanging on the walls. The food is a little on the pricey side, but very good and very generous portions. The bread basket they serve is excellent. Always great service.
