I've known more than my fair share of hotel rooms. Waaay more than my fair share, but this was the first and only one I'd come back to, just for the pure joy of what Gary has done with the place. For the same price (or cheaper!) of a bog standard hotel room in a soul destroying hotel chain at the University town 30 minutes down the road, you can find yourself cocooned in a tempurpedic bed with rich cotton sheets, after stepping out of the jacuzzi in your palatial bathroom, sipping on the best of the local wineries, dreaming about the fluffy chocolate chip pancakes Gary, the owner, has promised you for the morning....bliss. Each of the rooms in this old school house has been painstakingly restored and uniquely decorated to retain original blackboards, classroom reading circles, hard wood floors, school house memorabilia, and loads of charming antiques from yesteryear (I even found a pair of old ladies bloomers hanging in my closet!). All this is combined with the best of modern air-conditioning, flat screen televisions, a fridge, kitchenette, sink, and microwave, enormous bath, dining table, and lounge area. Perhaps the wifi has been updated since the previous reviewers, because I had no trouble. Gary has a meticulous attention to detail, which shows up in the decor, the handmade and locally sourced breakfasts, the personal orientation to the town's restaurants and vineyards, and the extra effort to make every guests stay in Anna not just comfortable, but sublime. Being in Anna on a business trip, we were expecting to hustle in and out of the rooms on the way to meetings and not see a soul; but Gary took extra efforts to make sure we had a hot healthy breakfast served to our rooms before dawn, to prepare different meals for different tastes, stocked the rooms with complimentary bottles of water, cookies, and nuts, and even packed us delicious snacks for the road in case we were hungry. If you are here for the first snow falls of the season, I hear Gary will lavish you with one of his mind-blowing Skor Bar brownies, but I'll have to come back for that next time. I would recommend a stay at the Davie School for a romantic getaway, a girls weekend on the wine trails, a family hiking vacation, a company retreat, or somewhere just to rest your weary mind, drink some wine and get fat on Gary's duck egg omelets. Or like me, just get out of your hotel membership program funk and be reminded of the joy of travel and the art of customer service again.

Such a wonderful well rounded family weekend complete with live music at beautiful wineries, hiking in parks, mass at the Catholic Church next door, memorable breakfasts, historical interests all around town (and the Inn), unique local breweries, and friendly proprietors & guests. Our son is a spirited 16 mth old explorer and the Inn was a great fit with a playground out back in the city park and child friendly amenities. There is also a nice city pool with a slide out back during the summer. Looking forward to future visits.

Huge rooms, feels like you're staying at someone's home. Amazing accommodations and hospitality, homemade breakfast is incredible. Gary gave great recommendations for food/activities in the area. Best customer service I've ever experienced. This place is second to none, would/will recommend to anyone looking for lodging in the area.

I agree. A very well kept secret of southern Illinois. Good weekend getaway. Excellent value. 4 Stars easily but 5 Stars rated because of the value. I dislike Bed & Breakfasts. Why? Because the thought of losing privacy to stay in a kitchy antique place gives me the chills. But this place is DIFFERENT and off the beaten track. Located in Anna in southern Illinois, this inn was formerly a school as far as I know up until 90's. Each room is huge and can easily count as two standard urban city hotel suites combined. The ceilings are high. The windows are as you would expect tall letting in much light during the winter season. There are curtains that are drawn to allow for privacy. Wood floors. A hot tub, two sinks and mirrors, couch. you can easily fit a party of 3 or more in these rooms because they are so big. The bed is TEMPUR-PEDIC. Best bed I ever slept in a hotel / inn. Seriously. Interestingly, what many have not caught on is there are specialty suites. If you want that flat screen, recessed lighting, contemporary look, those rooms are available. I went with the cheapest room which was incredible. For close to $100 I had a huge room as described in the first paragraph and with breakfast for two served to us to eat in privacy of our room! Without breakfast, $85. yes, there is a table and chairs that could seat four in there. Yes there is a microwave, small refrigerator, kitchenette inside, large coffee table. yes, there are alot of old school literally antiques. Satellite tv. I can see myself coming here for a retreat and working on a novel in one of these rooms. A relaxing vacation would be to head out and stay here a night, then proceed to the Little Grand Canyon of Illinois a short drive away. I posted a few pics of this little known trail. The Davie School Inn is a great place. I think they have to parlay all the local flavors as an attraction. The owner is distinct by his Indiana Jones like hat he wore. He's friendly, and funny. The place is large and you may hear his kids possibly walking down one of the halls... so no, it's not ghosts. 17th Street Bar & Grill in O'Fallon, Ill is one of my favorite BBQ places. HOWEVER, the ORIGINAL nearby location in Murphysboro did not taste like the O'Fallon location at all. Its close to the inn. It was part of my southern Illinois trip but given if you are at Davie School Inn, you will have to see for yourself on your way back up to St. Louis and rate it on Yelp. Recommendations: Top floor room is awesome and most quiet. However, if online looks like inn is less than half vacant, I think first floor will suffice for quietness. Do go to the Little Grand Canyon for a hike. Do get the optional breakfast in the morning served to your room. Bring your GPS. Note.. it may not work on some of the outer roads. If you are really frugal, bring snacks or lunch to place in fridge to heat up. I recommend bringing some drinks, water bottles, soda. If owner offers you a tour of other rooms and the building, do it. You will be impressed with the new masculine suite he's building. Romantic getaway? You can really suffice w/standard rooms. However, $200 will get you the ultra gold or purple room. Winter actually is a solid time to travel because of tall windows for light. Whirpool tub is 1-2 person size and modern. Avoid filling it twice in short period of time. Had a problem with hot water. The purple and gold rooms have a large tub that I envied! Wifi does exist but I didn't get a good signal. Luckily, I bypass this everwhere by tethering my laptop to my mobile phone's internet.

A great inn and a unique experience. The rooms are HUGE and the rooms in back have a nice view of the fair groungs. Gary is a great host and provides fantastic breakfasts. Centrally located for the wineries and hiking.

One Word...Amazing! I have now been to the Davie School Inn 3 times and the majority of the reason we have begun to frequent the Shawnee Wine Trail is because of Gary and his spectacular place! I love that if my husband and I go alone, we can have breakfast in our room and not be forced to make conversation with people we've never met. However, when there is a large group (we've had as many as 13) we can all meet on the landing and have breakfast in our pajama's and start the day with great fun and laughs. Not only are the rooms unbelievably spacious and clean and the breakfast delicious (not to mention plentiful!) but the background we have learned from Gary on the town, the school and history of the area in general has been an awesome addition to an already wonderful visit. We initially went to Sountern Illinois for the wine trail...we continue to go back because of The Davie School Inn.

My boyfriend and I just returned from our weekend away at the Davie School Inn for his birthday. We read a few reviews online and researched each suite prior to making a reservation, and I have to say - we were blown away. The service was casual and professional, the room was HUGE, the bed was comfortable [the sheets were THE most comfortable I've ever slept on...], the bathroom was clean, the decorations were right on point, and the breakfast was AMAZING. Literally my only 'complaint' is the occasional creaking of the stairs and floors, but the school was built over 100 years ago, so there's not much to be done about that. The typical crowd isn't exactly one that would cause a great deal of movement, and we were never disturbed. Also the website does say that wi-fi is available, but neither my boyfriend or I tested that, so I can't add an opinion on its reliability. If you go for no other reason, go for the breakfast! It is ALL homemade. Day one for us was a spinach omelet with breakfast sausages and home fries, accompanied by homemade strawberry/cream cheese pastries, toast, fruit, and juice. Day two was French toast topped with fried apples and whipped cream, bacon, scrambled eggs, fruit, and juice. Food allergies are taken into consideration at check-in, and adjustments can be made to the menu if necessary, but I promise you, if you love comfort breakfast food, you will love what Gary prepares! We stayed in the Blue Suite, their most affordable and located on the first floor, which included Dish TV, a king-sized bed, a small refrigerator, microwave, sink, glasses/mugs, a wine bottle opener, table for breakfast, hair dryer, jacuzzi tub, and the fluffiest towels I've ever felt. There was nothing we didn't enjoy about our weekend away, and we are already planning our next trip to try out a different suite. Locally, I have to recommend the Brick House Grill - a 2-block walk from the Inn. Amazing food and wine, and also reasonably priced [depending on the entree] - I got the Italian Beef, which was phenomenal, and my boyfriend got the Brickhouse Burger, which he loved. The staff was very welcoming and accommodating, and we were glad we added that restaurant to our trip. For next time, we plan to check out the entire wine trail [which can be in a package deal for shuttle service to each of the local wineries], and the pumpkin patch. Lots of local small businesses to check out in the home-y town! I loved my experience with this stay, and I can't wait to go back!

Great place to stay! My wife and I stayed here for a long weekend getaway on our anniversary. Gary was friendly, helpful, knowledgable and a great cook. Breakfast is brought to your room at a time appointed by you, it is hot, big and delicious. Gary gave us ideas of things to do and places to go. He gave us his personal cell number so if we had any problems we could call or text him. Other than check in and out the only time we saw him was when he brought breakfast. The room was large, comfortable and nicely decorated. If you are looking for a place to kick back and relax, this is the place.
