Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

This place is better than any Mexican place in town. The food actually has flavor here.

I judge a Mexican restaurant by how the do on the carnitas. They nailed it. My wife jokingly ask for cerviche. Well for the price of coming back a second time (the next day). They are going to make it for us. Bad Ass!

Great Mexican food, delicious margaritas & awesome friendly staff. Can't ask for much more!

Glad we decided to take a chance on eating here. Service was fast, the house special margarita was good for the price. Warmed chips and good salsa while you wait was worth the three bottles we had. I'm sure if I ever come across the bridge again to Alton, this will be the place to eat.

Incredible! My husband and I had been to this location when it was El Mezcal and we were excited to see that it was new since we had not had good experiences before. Riveria Maya was EXCEPTIONAL!!! The server gave us just the right amount of attention, the salsas were fresh and I definitely recommend trying the spicy tomatillo salsa if you're into hot salsa! Our children both cleaned their plates of quesadillas and enchiladas, and they have very discerning palates. My husband had the pork adobo burrito and wowzers it was flavorful and fresh as were my chile poblanos. I am somewhat of a connoisseur of chiles rellenos and these were absolutely top notch! The margaritas were on special so myself and my hubby both decided to partake and they were absolutely fantastic! They were the perfect blend of tequila and surely they were full of grand marnier because they were just a little orangey without being too overpowering! I will definitely recommend this place to friends in the area and all of you! The manager even stopped by our table just to quickly ask how our evening was and I gave him an earful about how awesome our dinner, drinks, and our overall experience was and I he brought me a free drink! This girl is sold! Yum! Thanks for the delicious dinner...and drinks!

Can't recommend Riviera Maya highly enough! This is our favorite restaurant in Alton. The food is amazing (the bean enchiladas are my wife's favorite, I love the Alton tacos) & the service is incomparably prompt/friendly. Their specials (both food & drinks) are always worth a try, as well, & are a great deal (especially the awesome margaritas)!

We have been to this restaurant a couple of times, apparently they do a boom lunch business due to the buffet but are quiet in the evening - which is nice if you like personal attention and want to get served fast! The food was tasty and the employees were friendly and helpful, even returning my ball cap after I accidentally left it in the booth. The wife and I recommend!

Ugh. We were pretty excited to try RM based on the previous reviews--we just moved from Indianapolis and have yet to find a mexican restaurant that even comes close to our local favorite over there, El Rodeo. When we arrived, we weren't even sure if they were open. There was not a single car in the parking lot. We were the only customers in there and it took nearly ten minutes to get our drinks. I ordered the steak fajitas and there was next to no meat on the plate, it was mostly green peppers and onions. The beans were crusty and the rice could have been from the previous day, it was so hard. Husband ordered a steak burrito and it was tiny (at least compared to the ones from our favorite places in Indy) and the meat was lukewarm at best. We couldn't get our drinks refilled at all. My son's cheese quesadilla looked (and tasted) pretty good at least. For a $34 (with tip) meal, we were sorely disappointed and won't be going back.

The Pollo and Chorizo is my new favorite. I also asked for salsa Verde, and was given Verde and a red chili salsa, both were good. Best Mexican in town.

Not the best Mexican place around but the only buffet. Cheap lunch buffet! Like most buffets, u wanna show up early. 11-1 Mon-Sat. If its on the buffet and u want it fresh, just ask. They will bring it right from the kitchen. Nice staff, tv's, full bar.

My wife and I tried this restaurant on a whim and we were pleasantly surprised by how awesome it was! If you know Alton, IL very well then you know that the previous restaurant that occupied the building Riviera Maya is currently in was a Ponderosa. It was a typical, not very cool restaurant. The owners of Riviera Maya have managed to turn this into a pretty nice place! Our server was phenomenal, and the food was really good. Try the Guacamole Salad....their guacamole is the best I've ever had. I'm definitely a fan!
