Fantastic. Asian chicken salad was superb. Excellent service at the bar. I'll be returning for desert!

Wow! A gem in Alton, IL with a nice view of the Mississippi. We had delicious, full sized Fish Tacos for only $5. A fresh, crispy Asian Chicken Salad with juicy, flavorful chicken(not the dried out chicken too often provided with a salad). And a zesty Ahi Tuna Salad. Gentelin's fresh baked rolls(served warm) are so good you will be tempted to fill up on them! We plan on returning to Gentelin's this weekend to try out other items on their menu.

Chicken drummies were very good. House salad was spot on, simple but very good. Chili rubbed pork ribeye was cooked to perfection and had great flavor. House pinot noir was very good. Rolls serves with dinner were average. Service was outstanding! Great view...

My husband, son, brand new daughter and myself met up with some friends at Gentelins for dinner one night, they had their infant son and toddler daughter as well. Thankfully, they gave us a small room in the back, which was nice as we didn't have to worry about the noise of the toddlers and babies. My friend and I each ordered the wedge salad and soup and it was good enough that we both crave that salad now. And for ~$7, you can't beat it. Ironically, our husbands ordered the same meals and they were both very happy with theirs. I would have given it five stars if the service was a little better than it was....

Food was great at a reasonable price. You get what you pay for and then some. Friendly service, haven't had a bad experience with them.

We have been here twice recently, once for a drink at the bar and once for dinner after a show at the nearby casino. The experience in the bar was nice. It was crowded and busy, so service was a little slow. I was overcharged, but the bartender told me it would reverse off my bill right away, and it did (phew, so grateful, always a hassle when it doesn't!). We had to stand for about half of our stay. I understand that it was a busy weekend evening, but there is plenty of room to add a few bar seats in the very open space. Dinner was good as well. We arrived right at 9, and it was already winding down for the night. I asked our waiter when they closed and was surprised to hear 10 PM. On a Saturday! They did not rush us at all, however, and we were the very last people in there. Service overall was good. There were two items that we ordered that wound up being out for the night- always nice to know that in advance. They have great weekly specials on a separate sheet and we got a few of them, such as the fire roasted shrimp and the pumpkin pie martini, both delicious. My goat cheese salad was also tasty, my BFs greek salad a solid standard version. He had a Broadway burger ordered mid rare, and it was a little overcooked but still good. Traditional french fries accompanied. I ordered the phyllo mushroom cups with boursin and they arrived cold, as if they were chilled. I asked my waited about them and he said they had been frozen before and must not have cooked through. Not really thrilled with that, but I would have never known had they been cooked properly as the flavors were there, just not popping and blending at that temp. I sampled the salmon, which was good, and the strip, which was also slightly overcooked. They do have a stellar wine list, with a Caymus family member's brand, Meiomi, being available for a lower cost, but almost comparable flavor. Overall, I agree that this is one of the better spots in Alton for creative, quality food!

I was expecting more from the tasted cannelloni. It was good but I couldn't finish 2/3 of the plate. I would definitely recommend the kabobs. They were tender and succulent. But the rest of the food was ok, nothing amazing. The decor is sophisticated.

My boyfriend and I came here for my birthday dinner and we both loved it! I am a vegetarian and my boyfriend chose it specifically because there are some great vegetarian options. When we arrived, we were seated right away. Our waitress was very nice and attentive and I liked the clean, modern decor. I ordered the goat cheese salad for an appetizer and my boyfriend got the caesar salad. I absolutely LOVED my salad; it was delicious. I love salads with dried fruit, nuts, and goat cheese and this salad did not disappoint. My boyfriend also really enjoyed his caesar salad. We also received warm rolls with our salads that were served with a garlicy butter that was very good. I ordered the tofu steak for my entree and I really enjoyed it. It came with rice and vegetables and a good soy-sauce type of sauce. I liked that it was light and tasty and the vegetables seemed very fresh. My boyfriend ordered the filet and he absolutely DEVOURED it. It came with steamed spinach and a blue cheese potato au gratin that was to die for. My boyfriend can be very picky about his meat and always ends up cutting away fatty pieces, but this was the one time he ate absolutely every bite. He is STILL talking about that filet! He called it the "steak of the year"! All in all, we really enjoyed our meal here and I would absolutely recommend it.

I have a feeling we just had an abnormally bad experience due to an unbelievably bad waitress, but the fact that this place would even employ such a person makes its entire operation suspect. My wife and I were there on a Tuesday. Our waitress bitched VERY loudly throughout the restaurant that she "fucking hated" working Wednesdays because it's so slow. When we ordered, she talked to us in this very strange, over exaggerated tone of voice, like she was speaking to children. Our food was OK, nothing great. My wife ordered a shrimp-based dish that consisted of two shrimp, one of which was very hollow of meat. When our meal was finished, our wacky server was no where to be found. A different waitress noticed we were just sitting there, finished, and boxed up leftovers for us... about 15 minutes of me sitting there, snapping my credit card on the table, the wacky waitress reappeared and took it... another 10 minutes later, a male waiter came back with the bill saying "Your waitress asked me to drop this off for her." ... Problem, it wasn't my card or bill. His response, "Oh, of course it isn't." In a tone that let us know that he realizes we got the worse waitress ever.... another 15 minutes later, the wacky waitress returns with the correct card and bill, hurls it at me like a frisbee. The restaurant might not be bad, but this waitress alone ensured that we will never return. She needs to be let go. Belongs at a Burger King, at best.

The food wasn't terrible. I had the spinach and artichoke dip (delicious, they poured a hefty amount of olive oil on the bread which is always good.) My chicken was cooked perfectly, the pasta was sub par though, quite bland. I would tell you how my dessert was, but my server thrusted the bill in my face before asking us if we wanted dessert. We did mention it before we ordered our food though. She seemed preoccupied talking to another table about her honeymoon at Yellowstone. Go for the food, expect bad service and a terrible old fashion.

By far the best fine dining in Alton. Its good but not amazing, and they do care about what is on your plate. Albeit they do not always execute it to perfection, i.e. steaks not cooked to temp, overcooked tuna, but its not far off, just not perfect for fine dining, hence the 4 instead of 5..The staff rocks, and they handle a large group perfectly. They have a good wine list, any drink you want, solid deserts, and great salads. Its laid back, quite, and just a solid place to eat in a town not known for culinary greatness. It stands out, so stop being a snob and go eat here.

After reading all the rave reviews I really had my hopes up. Boy was I in for a disappointment. Don't get me wrong, I'm not one of those people that are impossible to please, but the quality of the food was pretty bad at any price, for what I paid, it was down right awful. My wife and I both had the ribeye dinner so I can't comment on the other entrees this place had to offer, but I have had much better steak dinners for one third the price from Ponderosa when they used to be in town. The steak itself had no flavor and tasted like it was pan fried. When I pay $70 for two steak dinners, I should not have to use steak sauce. It was also served cold and full of gristle and very hard to cut with a knife. This was definitely not USDA prime beef. In fact, I would say it wasn't as good as what walmart has in their frozen food section. Their salads were served warm and wilted and their dinner rolls were about the size and hardness of dog biscuits. After eating there, I have come to the realization that these other reviews could only of come from family and close friends of the owner because I do not believe these were honest reviews from real customers.

Great food and service!

Excellent food, service and atmosphere. Great views of the Clark Bridge and Mississippi River.
(5)Natalie L.
I eat here at least once a week. They have a great atmosphere no matter what type of experience you are looking for. They have a small bar, private rooms, and a dining room with a view of the Clark Bridge that cannot be topped. The service is some of the best there is, and the food goes right along with that. You can come in and get a meal that ranges from $8-$30 depending on what type you are looking for. I would recommend this to anyone who is in the area and it is worth the drive from St. Louis too. You will not find anything of that quality for this price across the river.
(5)Stephen S.
They have a main dining room that is a decent size with the tables nicely spaced and nice decor. Awesome view of the river and bridge. They also have a bar that seats about 10 with a few tables, that is secluded from the dining room. There is also a private room that fits about 10 and another larger banquet room, not sure on the size. We came on the Friday after Thanksgiving with a 7 PM reservation for a birthday dinner for my brother in from San Diego. It was just the four oldest plus Jacki and my parents. We waited at the bar for the parentals. They had Schlafly on tap, currently Pale Ale and Coffee Stout. They also have Blue Moon and one other. Pale ale was my choice of drink for the evening, For dinner I had the shrimp pasta. It was with linguini, artichokes, and tomatoes in a shrimp broth that was peppery and sooo good. The shrimp was the best I have ever had shrimp. I haven't liked shrimp for too long, but it was awesome. Jacki had the filet that was requested medium well and came out more medium. It was seasoned really well. It came with bleu cheese potatoes that were interesting in a good way. The spinach was pretty plain. Barry also had a filet he ordered medium rare, and it was rare. He enjoyed it none the less. James and Chas had the Aunt Jayne's Chicken that they both said was a little spicier than they thought it would be, I believe it said lightly blackened. I should have gotten a try of that. The Greek salad was pretty standard, but got the job done. The bread is served with an herb butter that is very good. Our server was excellent and our meal was nicely paced with the decent sized group. She brought out a pumpkin crepe even though we didn't order any dessert. The bartender was a good friend of Barry's who told the waitress. She even took a picture for my mom. Drinks were always being offered and waters were kept full. There was an awkward glass filling towards the end but it provided a good laugh. Nice place to celebrate special occasions or people...

Went for closed party so didn't experience restaurant during open hours. Great presentation on cannelloni. Salmon with cous cous was in a red sauce, not a big fan of that combo. NY Strips looked great.

Wow, would have never known this was here in Alton, my husband and I won this at a ski auction and it was the best dinner, proportions were excellent, servers are excellent and they clean up your plates promptly. Nice decor, not crowded, can here your own conversation. Love the timing in-between courses, didn't feel like I had to hurry with my appetizer because a salad was coming or because my dinner was going to get here before I was done with my salad. We are going to tell all our friends about this place and I would recommend to anyone.
(5)Mark S.
We dine here frequently and have always been extremely pleased. Highly recommended!!
