I stumbled on this place when searching Yelp. The reviews were encouraging so I decided to try it. The reviews were way to generous. The service was good and a tasteful atmosphere but that was it. The food quality and taste wasn't worth the prices they charged.

I can't believe this place got the ratings it did! The staff was great but when you pay $7.00 for a kids plate and it comes looking like something I could get at KFC....The fried chicken I got wasn't as good either and I am not a KFC fan. It was over priced and the food was sub par. $12.00 for a 2 piece. meal.. Not worth the money, we won't be going back.

Castellis is a very nice place to eat at. The chicken is very tasty and this last time ordered the chicken Parm. Yum. Must visit here!

I have been eating here since I was a child and the fried chicken hasn't changed at all!! It is still the best you can get around here. We have had plenty of Christmas and birthday parties for our family here. They also have the most delicious onion rings that I have ever eaten anywhere. Nice atmosphere and a nice bar area also. Counting the days before I can go back!!

The food is consistently good and normally so is the service. That was not the case today. I sat and watched while people who came in after me were given water and waited on. Finally my waiter showed up and I ordered my shrimp cocktail and grilled tenderloin chicken salad. I asked for iced tea and was not asked if I wanted lemon. This same waiter asked every patron besides me if they wanted lemon. When my salad arrived the chicken was crispy fried. I told the waiter it was not what I ordered. He did not offer to make it right. He also did not offer me ground pepper as I saw him do for every other person he waited on. I wrote a review and gave it to receptionist. Have received no response.

They had a great fish it was pond raised. I think it was called Paganini fish and it was terrific, kind of like a freshwater grouper anyhow the fish the rest of the food and the service were just delightful and our server gave us a perfect recommendation on the bottle of wine from Dave Matthews which was a superb mixed red. this restaurant is in a wonderful classy building and a location for everything from large groups to in my case a couple of folks who needed to have a productive business meeting which we did and much of the credit for a great meal goes to this excellent wonderful facility. A bit out-of-the-way but worth it.

We use to eat here often back in the 60's. In 1994 we hosted a surprise 80th birthday party here for our father. That was the last time until tonight eating here. We are here from Tennessee to attend a wedding. Had to go back there tonight to eat. The food quality and quantity as well as the service and atmosphere are just as good today as it was in the 60's and 1984. And the prices are very reasonable. If you are in the area and want a great dinning experience this is where you will want to go.

THE best fried chicken in the St. Louis Metropolitan Area!

This place has class. I honestly cannot recall how many times I've been here over my lifetime. This restaurant shares a special place in my heart and mind. It was here that I would visit with my grandparents on Sunday afternoons after church. I go here for chicken. My wife likes their pasta. I've never had a bad dinning experience. The Sunday crowds can be fierce, but the wait is worth it. My one critique is they need a decor makeover. Its got a mid 90's feel and needs updating.

I went there for a work lunch and ordered the toasted ravioli. I didn't think there was a way to screw it up. Castelli's figured it out. Not only was it disgusting but I got sick from it. My co-worker had the fettuccine Alfredo (another easy thing to make) and she got sick too. Unless you want to spend the next 24-48 hours in the bathroom, I would suggest avoiding this place.

Great fried chicken and salads. Pasta has room for improvement. The service is always great and attentive. Good place to dine in or carry out. My family has been going here for years. It's worth a try.

The staff is friendly and helpful. They don't have a wide variety for vegetarians. Watch out the Raviolis are not cheese! Just a heads up! But definitely try the house salad, its the best house salad around! This is a fine dinning restaurant so its a little more pricey than your regular restaurant. ( i would wear church clothes) They have seating enough for large banquets and parties. They cater also for large numbers. And they are closed on Mondays.

I am not positive, but I am fairly certain that Moonlight was the first restaurant that I experienced as a child. I remember all the special occasions, we celebrated here enjoying the Talk-N-Chic, which is their house secret, trademarked recipe for fried chicken. It has been passed down 4 generations and it is so good I'd be tempted to marry into the family just to get the recipe. Living in Saint Louis now, Moonlight is close, but yet so far away. I agree with George O. and wish they'd open a location on the west side of the river. However, with family still on this side of the river, I will coordinate my visits around lunch or dinner time to satisfy my fried chicken cravings. Our recent lunch was no disappointment, as with every visit memories floated through my head. We ordered two 2 Piece Platters; one with two thighs and fries and the other a wing and breast with a baked potato. All the pieces were huge, crispy golden brown and juicy. The fries were crispy and the baked potato was baked throughout. As a bonus, you can order a small side of chicken livers with your dinner, which we did. I am not a liver fan, but here at Moonlight is another story. When those livers are breaded in the family secret and fried to perfection, I become a fan. Let me regress for a moment, and talk about our salads. More importantly the dressing. Their house dressing is Ramon, which is the off spring a Caesar and Mayfair. This is a dressing that should be on your local grocers shelves, not that stuff from PH. Along with the salad they serve up a basket filled with warm, thick sliced Italian bread and whipped butter. The service here is always stellar. Best way to describe it would be "down home friendly". They are attentive and know how to hustle. When your order of chicken is ready, it is out to your table in no time flat. Lana took care of us on our last visit and when I found out she'd been there 32 years, she and I strolled down memory lane. In my book, Moonlight has the best fried chicken, period.

Excellent food, Filets are always perfect, fettuccine sauce is the best I ever had, and the house salad is to die for, everything they cook seems to be from scratch with their own recipe, staff is friendly, Debbie is the best waitress ever!

Great fried chicken! The six piece chicken dinner is enough to feed two! The atmosphere is very nice as well. Nothing like a nice family restaurant. I highly recommend this place to anyone.

Have you ever had one place that just screamed one dish, well Castelli's Restaurant at 255 that dish is the specialty fried chicken. However much like Ravanelli's they don't only serve chicken here, however they could and I would be perfectly fine with it. The menu here consists of Italian specialties, grilled items, and Yes, Chicken! I remember eating the chicken from here for 10-15 years ago, it simply stands out that much. Back in the day Castelli's Restaurant at 255 was known as Moonlight, and I think at some point it transitioned owners and because Castelli's Moonlight and now it is Castelli's Restaurant at 255. Overall the chicken recipe has stayed the same, which is a good thing, light flaky crispy chicken that isn't greasy and is just seasoned perfectly all while the meat is tender and juicy, its simply mouthwatering. I personally cannot vouch for any of the other entrees, as I have never been able to visit and not get the chicken. However if it is half as good as the chicken they have a winner! The atmosphere here is still casual, however its a bit more upscale casual. The staff has always been friendly and helpful. Overall this is a great dining option, I just wish that it wasnt such a drive!

I've grown up in the area and have visited this place a lot of times. In the past, it's been a great experience. However, in the last few years the place seems to be going downhill. The only thing that we order if we go there is the chicken

What a great Resturant in Alton. My grandparents took me here for dinner while I was visiting them and we had a great time. I had the toasted ravioli with the bolognese sauce and the ravioli were these adorable little flying saucer/sombrero hat looking little things that had a pretty tasty meat like paste inside. You dipped them in the bolognese sauce which was also pretty good. My grandmother got the clam chowder which she said had lots of clams and was very tasty and she also got the house dressing salad which she loves. My grandfather got the catfish which he devoured and I mean devoured so I'm going to guess he really enjoyed it. Their ranch dressing is Delicious and they give you free bread which are two of my favorite things at a Resturant. The interior is really nice, the decorated for the holidays and the staff were very pleasant. I had to fight my grandfather for the bill and the waitress chose me which I really did appreciate!

Sum it Up in One Word....*YummmmmmYlicious* I've had several items, off their menu. Grew up going here, as a kid - when it was Moonlight. Live on the MO side now - but, still go as often as possible!! :) Their house salad dressing cannot be beat...Chicken is GREAT...Prime Rib is Awesome...

The best thing to get is the chicken. Pasta is ok. The house dressing is great but they ruin it putting it on old lettuce that is obviously out of a bag. Service has always been great, even when busy. Since we live close, we go monthly. Chicken always great. Just don't get a salad.

First timer last week. What a great restaurant in all areas, food, service, ambiance, and personal touch. At our table of six there were NO complaints regarding food or service. Chicken is their specialty along with Italian and American fare. I had rigatoni with meatballs. The sauce was thick with meat, tomato, and perfect seasoning except it tasted heavy with pepper for my tongue. It likely was the style of sauce and I certainly would not hesitate to order it again. The meatballs were dense, seasoned perfectly, and both were about half the size of a baseball, plenty even for my hearty appetite. My wife and I had an opportunity to meet the owner Tracy. She is a wonderful person, full of life and humor, and very dedicated to making sure the restaurant is perfect in all areas. She seemed to be very hands on which is the only way to maintain a high level of customer service and base. I have no hesitancy in recommending this restaurant. I certainly will return myself.

I have been blogging about food for 10+ years and this is hands down the best Fried Chicken I have ever had. I have tried it 8 times in the last 2 years and every time I am amazed on how good the chicken is. Moist, crispy, postion size is always the same. They have a fantastic and simple house salad with their famous house dressing which is my kids favorite. The livers are a huge hit with my wife and everyone loves the onion rings. I can honestly say the rest of the Italian is just good, not great, but you come for the chicken and will remember it for the rest of your life!!!

Castelli's offers their specialty fried chicken. I went while they were having their 75th Anniversary and I can see why they've been in business for so long. Great service, very friendly and always with a smile. They actually have quite the selection of beers/wines; some local too. I'm not going to lie, but their salad was to die for... I couldn't wait to try anything I had ordered by this point. The appetizers are fairly delicious, but the big reason I came was for the Fried Chicken. It keeps me coming back over and over again. There wasn't a long wait and they even had a band playing that evening. Live Entertainment! I won't say the food is the cheapest, but in this aspect You get what you pay for! I would suggest any family event/dinner. Always a good time.

What a kick! Loved this place! Was visiting the fiancee's family and they took us here. What's the thing that's really good that everyone says to eat? Can't--FRIED CHICKEN. EAT IT. Prices are pretty reasonable for this kind of place. Felt a little like a banquet hall but hey - for that fried chicken, whatever works!

Last night had the spaghetti and meat balls. Very awesome meat sauce what little I had of it, requested a side dish for extra, but was told cost 1.99 which I refused to pay. Little later a small bowl was brought out, no charge.. Still wasn't enough, but much improved. I hate eating plain spaghetti with very little taste. When I prepare this meal at home, I make sure every noodle is covered, making a complete meal...

Amazing! We generally get the chicken strips (easy to share with little man and my husband doesn't care for chicken on the bone). My favorite part of going to Moonlight? The fact I can get some of the most amazing fettucini alfred I've ever had as a side to my favorite restaurant-made chicken anywhere. I would have given them 5-stars, however their kids menu is pricy. IMO, there's NO reason that a kids meal should ever be over $4-5. Honestly, we've quit getting him a kids meal and have started just ordering extra mashed potatoes or something and sharing him our son. I think the service is good, not excellent, but we've never had any issues other than waiting too long on occasion to get our drinks refilled. Mmmm. Maybe we'll go tonight :-)

My all time favorite place. Grew up going to Moonlight every Sunday after church. My Grandparents were good friends with founder Pete Castelli. There are lots of wonderful things to try. But if you walk through the doors you better order the world best fried chicken, otherwise you will miss the best part of life....Moonlight Chicken. The salad dressing is amazing as well. I know you will return time and time again...bring your friends and family.

Love the ravioli! Love the ravioli! Not so much the seafood ravioli, but the regular ravioli is superb. The service is just the right mix of homey and fancy. Decor a bit old fashioned but the place still seems solid. The chicken is very good as well, but its really the ravioli thats the best.

My sister's late father in laws fave restaurant. The fried chicken in here is incredible, perfectly coated and juicy inside.. Do yourself a favor and stick to a quarter meal because you will never be able to eat more than three pieces. The half meal is six pieces, gah. My parents have gotten livers and declared them tasty but I have never gotten anything but chicken. Service is friendly and they have recently redone the place so the atmosphere is nicer. Dressy casual dress is appropriate.

Ok I am a conosieurr with chicken. Heard from some people this place has best fried chicken. Event though it's in Alton, Illinois, it ranks among the top three fried chicken joints in the greater Saint Louis, Missouri region. I like Porter's chicken and King Edward's chicken in St. Louis area. Juicy meat and tender. Not over floured. Crunchy but not deep fried. Meat falls off the none. Different flavor. Prime rib wasn't too bad either!

Fried chicken is outstanding. Italian salad dressing is very good. Their homemade version of toasted ravioli is unique, and quite tasty. A friend swears by their steaks, many favor their Italian dishes, and I have had prime rib in the past (good); but, nothing can compare to the fried chicken. Prices are reasonable (a half-chicken is actually five or six large pieces, but gives plenty to take home - and is an excellent "leftover"), and the service is generally fine. Highly recommended!

Our first visit to what is now called Castelli's Restaurant at 255. Service was good, but the food was bland. The bread basket was quite ordinary, the creamy bleu cheese and ranch dressings were tasteless. The fried chicken cried out for more seasoning as did the prime rib. I asked for grated horseradish, the server brought a small cup of something that was so dark brown that I thought she had brought me brown sugar by mistake. Once horseradish is grated, if not used immediately or mixed in vinegar, the root darkens, loses its pungency, and becomes unpleasantly bitter when exposed to air and heat. The food was totally unremarkable and nothing compels us to make a return visit to see if the food quality improves.

I've been dining at Castelli's Moonlight since my parents took me here in the '60's, and it's always delivered great food at reasonable prices. So what should you order at this Italian restaurant and steakhouse? Awesome fried chicken, of course! Their fried chicken, which is fried under pressure (often called "broasting"), sealing in all the moist goodness with the minimum of grease. If you don't try this fried chicken, you'll be missing one of the great tastes of the East Side. Heads up on the size of the chicken entrees, the quarter is 3 pieces and the half is 6 pieces! Atmosphere: 4 Service: 5 Food: 5 Value: 5 Between Castelli's and Ravanelli's in Granite City, folks in this area have two outstanding Italian restaurants that both serve that great broasted chicken. I'm jealous of all of you who live there!

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
