Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

Great meats - their burritos are fantastic and reasonably priced!

Nice little place. Very clean has a little corrugated steel like decor but much warmer than a Chipotle. The beef burrito is awesome. We always split because it is such a generous portion. It's nice that alcohol is an option. I've taken business clients here several times for lunch. The only thing negative I can say is that the music is a little too loud and they don't give you enough guacamole. Two quick adjustments and it's the perfect place to eat some lunch or dinner.
(4)Diana S.
This place has tasty food, great horchata, and very accommodating staff. We asked for vegetarian refried beans and they said no problem since they make it on site from fresh. The only thing was the main dining area is so close to the door, and with the wind and people coming in and out it was pretty cold so we took our taco plates to go. If you do stick around they have two TVs playing sports if you like that kind of thing :-)
(4)Joe Z.
Limited menu, but great tasting fresh food. It's also very odd walking into where diced used to be, decor changed a lot

Was excited to try this place since it is owned by the same owner as firebar. But very disappointed it's definitley not Authentic Mexican food very Americanized would much prefer going to El Norte as someone mentioned this on here too My wife ordered a taco bowl with ground beef there were 2-4 chunks of steak in there very sloppy.. The size of the salsa and guacamole is a joke another reason el Norte blows this place out of the water, but nice try..

This place is amazing! ! My boyfriend and i are always eatting here. They never mess an order up and the customer service is always stellar. We dont have alot of mexican joints around the area with clean meat and flavorful food so if your looking for some great authentic mexican food drop on by!!

This place is AMAZINGLY Delicious! I just left here with my brother and daughters. It is right down the street from where we work. It is in front of Meijer on Randall Rd. I ordered 3 chorizo tacos, with rice and beans and a coke. My brother got five tacos, 2 steak, 2 barbacoa, and 1 chicken with rice and beans, we also got a chicken quessadilla. ALL that was 30 dollars. The food was delicious. It tastes like authentic mexican food. The use corn tortillas and have refried beans. You order your own food and the call you to pick it up next to the register. There are no servers. The staff making the food and taking your order is super friendly and knowledgable of the menu. They have plenty of open tables and 4 or 5 large booths. I'm so glad I found this place. We will definitely be back again and again. I'm so glad I dont have to drive to crystal lake anymore whenever Im craving mexican food.
(5)J R.
the food was good, service was good, prices were good, atmosphere was good, location was good, only reason it didn't receive 5 stars - not a big fan of the hot sauce. wasn't very hot
(4)Mike D.
Didn't know what to expect but was extremely impressed. Tacos were great, while the taco bowl was even better. Awesome customer service.
(5)Tortuga M.
The burrito I tried was packed with meat. I got the Asada burrito and was surprised at first because it was a bit juicy and there was some juice at the bottom of my basket. However, the flavor and amount of meat made up for it quickly. I would recommend this place for good Mexican food. I'm from Los Angeles and know good tasting burritos. Not to mention I'm kinda picky about my food. I got this burrito without sour cream, but I'm sure if you like it it'll be just as good. I wasn't planning on coming here, I just happened to see it on my afternoon walk so I'm glad I did. The only reason for the 4 stars instead of 5 is because I think if you're eating in, they should add some chips to the burrito order, just like Baja Fresh does.
(4)Jimmy M.
I used to be their favorite fan. However, lately they have resulted in less than acceptable tasting food. You can put up all the Mexican themed wall art and like you can hire as many Hispanics as you'd like however if the food is not to par then I cannot be a customer. This is the third time I've been back there and their food and quality has reared its ugly face. I simply went in for a $6 burrito. I don't know if what they gave me they call a burrito but it was disgusting. Disappointed
(1)Liz B.
This is a nice place. I got a vegetarian taco plate. To be completely honest, it was a little bland. Sometimes that happens with vegetarian dishes. It wasn't terrible, but I would recommend getting a sofritas bowl from chipotle instead. However, I got some beef tacos for my family and they liked them, so there's that. I also got some horchata which was delicious. The customer service was excellent. The guy who took my order and girl that gave me my order were SO NICE. I spilled my horchata all over the table and floor while I was waiting for my order and they were both really chill about it. Without even asking they gave me another cup. It's good customer service... but also I think they were just really nice people.
(4)Jami J.
I really had high hopes for this place after reading other reviews. To me it tasted like average Mexican food, nothing special. I had a ground beef tostada and a guacamole tostada. The guacamole one was not on the menu, I made a special request and they accommodated to it. I did really appreciate that. The place is also very clean which deserves extra stars right there.
(3)Taylor M.
Fast food Mexican at its finest here! The restaurant is clean, the service is great and the food is savory. What more can you ask for? We ordered a taco salad and nachos. There was too much food for just the two of us to eat. Our taste buds were telling us to eat more but our bulging bellies told us to stop! I will be back for more!
(5)Jared W.
I dig it. It's easy for places like this to get lost in the shuffle much like the Chicago hot dog/beef places that are everywhere, but I truly enjoyed my burrito from El Fuego. From the outside, it's perhaps easy to miss, but absolutely worth trying if you haven't already.
(4)Xiaoyan A.
Found this place a couple of weeks ago and have been back many times. The food is so good--fresh ingredients, well seasoned meats, and elevated flavor with them! I have had taco and king burrito with pork, steak and chorizo, love them all! Hochata drink is great too. Highly recommended!
(5)Alyson L.
We picked this place for an easy week night meal. We called in an order of a couple tostadas, a flautas plate and a burrito plate. The order was ready in 10 minutes. The food was delicious and very fresh. We were impressed with the portion size as well. Both dinners came with a side of beans and rice. The rice is really good and the beans were not too bland as many restaurants do. We will be dinning at this place again.
(5)Kaitlin T.
Just moved from Texas and was afraid I would never have good tacos again. Devoured the vegetarian taco plate. Love that they offer black beans as a side for the vegetarian options. They doubled up on the tortillas so my delicious little street tacos didn't fall apart.
(5)Jessica L.
Great steak tacos. A bit expensive. Paid over $5 for 2 and waited pretty long time but everything was fresh and steak was seasoned so yummy. Will go again
(4)Alex W.
Great place in a good location. Their tacos are well priced and are absolutely incredible. I recommend doing them cantina style (onion and cilantro) with one of their salsas. Their salsas are awesome too, their hot is to die for. Their horchata is well done and we'll priced. Could use an extra large size though!
(5)RK D.
Tacos, burritos and sauce are all great. I think this is more of a one $ sign place but I'm not expert.
(5)Des C.
I saw this place on a drive up Randall last week and decided to give it a try. I stopped in just after 10 and ordered a mix of steak, chicken and al pastor tacos. The guy that took my order was a bit slow on the draw, but they had just opened. The other guy I spoke to while waiting for my order was very nice and actually gave me a coupon for their other bar/grill they own. Nice touch. I got home and was not impressed with the steak. The chicken was better but the al pastor was the best. I am spoiled by a Chicago taco joint near my office, otherwise they probably would've gotten an extra star. I'll definitely go back due to proximity and the al pastor.
(3)Jim L.
Great food, fast and friendly service. The seasonings are perfect. Try all the different salsas they are all very good.
(5)Peter D.
The food here is very delicious. I had an order of Quesadillas and guacamole. They were great. One note though, the quesadillas come with onion for the steak ones. Service is with a smile and the sauces taste very good. They have a home made habanero sauce that brings a good spicy kick to your meal. The meat is tasty and tender, not dry, flaky or too greasy. My wife had the fish tacos and had no complaints. The fish was fully cooked and full of flavor. My son had the child's burrito. He ate it up like a beast. My son usually takes his time eating, he did not that time. The rice is very good, soft and not dry. I would recommend this to anyone.
(4)jeniffer c.
Great food for the whole family. I love their salad bowls very filling fresh taste. Husband and son loves there steak torta and kids like their steak taco. Horchata is delicious.
(5)Jason C.
First time here. Ordered a king burrito (15"), with chips and salsa. Not too crazy about the salsa (I prefer a more red salsa with tomato chunks), but I do like the cilantro in it. The steak burrito however, was delicious! I will definitely come back and try more. I can't tell if I like the red sauce or green sauce more. Both are very good.
(4)Mike M.
Good food, good friends, and most of all great conversations are held here, this is the best Mexican I have ever eaten in a long time. Thanks guys for opening this place
(5)Borris Z.
Food is good. Ive been here many times, but 4 times i get home and wrong order. Last time I asked for steak tacos i got home and had 2 chicken burritos. I called back to let them know they should pay more attention to orders and guy on phone was giving me attitude saying " what can i do you are not here and we are closing!" I said neverminnd and good luck. Check your food before you leave!!
(2)Chris F.
I have gone here multiple times for lunch. I have eaten the burrito, tacos, and nachos. Everything was very fresh, and cooked to order. I thought the prices were decent. The place is always very clean, and the people working the counter are very nice. Their guacamole is amazing. I usually go here when I need a break from Chipotle.
(4)M K.
Never had a burrito like this before. GREASE was pooled in the bottom of the dish and dripping out of the burrito and all over my hands. Most disgusting thing I've ever had. If this is how they do food...I'll never return.
(1)Steve K.
Waited until a 2nd visit to review. The 1st visit, ordered the nachos, which were delicious! 2nd visit was for lunch, and a more traditional meal. This place really has good food, big thumbs up on the steak, juicy, and cooked perfectly. Prices are reasonable, good crowd on a late Sunday morning... Going to be a regular stop!
(5)Sarah M.
Not terrible. Went here for take out after hearing the wait at Tacos el Norte was 90 minutes! It's Cinco de Mayo, so that makes sense. Anyway, there was no line when I placed my order but a good amount of people waiting for food and I guess I ordered too slowly because there was a line when I was done! I got the steak taco plate. The meat was good and everything was warm and fresh. The beans and rice were gray and lack luster like another reviewer mentioned. I also got an order of chips and guacamole. The chips are not made in house, but they're decent. The guac was sour...like it had bottled lime juice in it...or maybe just way too much lime?? And I add a lot of lime to my guac, so idk. I had to turn back for the chips and guac because they were left out of my order, but the guy behind the counter was apologetic and gave me an order of chips and salsa. The red salsa was great. Not really authentic, but it had a nice smokey chipotle flavor. The salsa verde I had on my tacos was a strange color...green, but cloudy, not like what I'm used to. I likely won't go back...unless the wait at Tacos el Norte is 90 minutes and I'm craving for Mexican.
(3)Phil T.
Just your average mexican joint, this place says they are authentic mexican with a borderline twist. This place is far from that, if anything its your typical American-mex taco joint. Tried two different menu items: steak burrito and the veg burrito. Steak was chewy, bland, and missed that nice grilled flavor. Veg burrito lacked the best ingredient. Beans! It had more onions and green peppers that just overpowered everything and anything. I still smell and burp smells like a onion....No bueno! This place has a few major problems in my eyes... 1 - The little salsa containers need to go! Use the squirt bottles, salsa is so cheap you are probably spending more money in those containers. 2 - It was unbearably cold in the restaurant, yes it's freezing outside as well but when you have to eat with your jacket it makes an uncomfortable experience! Ill spare this place two stars bc they are new and hope to have them turn this place around in the future!
(3)Toni S.
This place is really fantastic. Whether you're getting your food to go or enjoying a casual dine in experience, you can't go wrong with El Fuego. The basic steak tacos are truly delicious. I love that they use corn tortillas instead of flour. The staff is really friendly and they service your food pretty quickly as well. Prices are average and the dining/kitchen area is really clean.
(5)Steve H.
Stopped for a take out lunch. Got the taco plate. Ordered 1 with chorizo and 1 with steak. Also got some chips and salsa. The worker gave me 1 each of the sauces for the tacos. Mild, hot, super hot and a pico de gallo. When I got home I was pleasantly surprised with the size of the tacos. Both had plenty of meat. The chorizo was non greasy. The beans and rice were good. Nothing too special. The tortilla chips were good, but I was surprised at the salsa. It looked like a chipotle sauce. It was a bit chocolatey actually. Not bad, but I was expecting the usual veggie salsa you get at other Mexican places. When I'm over on that side of Randall rd I will stop in again.
(3)Chris K.
I pre-ordered my food on Cinco de Mayo and was told 25 minutes. I arrived 30 minutes later and stll waited 30 min. The employees cooking the food were working as fast as they could. With this said when my food finally arrived it was hot, fresh, and prepared with the same quality I expected. The owner of this place needs to give these folks a bonus... they worked so hard and still maintained reputational excellence. I was frustrated with the wait but it was out of their control... next time serve long waiting guest chips and salsa or offer a soda, it would have kept them happy. This restaurant still has my business simply because they are the best in area!!
(5)Greg H.
Wasn't to impressed... El Norte Taco is a lot better. Don't get me wrong food was fresh, made to order, but no plans to return. I only tried this place because we had a coupon...
(2)Alber A.
Let me start by saying that this place is definitely better than Chipotle. I came here because I was tired of the same old Chipotle/Taco Bell and I prefer local places to chains. I was a bit hesitant as it's kind of small and not too busy, but I'm glad I did. Their steak burrito is good as is their horchata and the portions are pretty big. I give them a 3 because Cocula's in Chicago is 5 star worthy and they are quite a bit off the mark. If you live in the Algonquin or Lake in the Hills area, give this place a visit and you will likely stop going to Chipotle.
(3)Jeff W.
I've been here several times and each time the food has been great. The tacos are small but very good, and available with onions and cilantro or lettuce and tomato if you want to mix and match. Unlike the tacos the burritos are huge and one makes a meal. The service is a little slow, but at least the food is freshly made. If you like heat ask for the habanero sauce- it packs a lot more heat than the red or green sauces.
(5)Renato P.
Sorry, I was not a huge fan of this place. I have been searching for a new favorite Mexican place in the area. I saw this place moving in and was excited to try it. Let's start with my first impression of the food, I will never confuse it for what I think is traditional Mexican American food. Any place that serves orange cheese sauce loses that designation. Was my beef burrito bad, no, but much in the same way as taco bell isn't bad. To be fair it reminds me more of a suburban mall's Mexican restaurant in the food court. If that is your idea of tasty eats, you will probably enjoy this place. If you want cilantro, queso fresco, and any sort of legit home cooking feel, you may want to dine elsewhere.
(2)Dan P.
This is a good place that is more Mexican/American with a leaning to Mexican. Solid menu and good food.
(3)bill s.
Great torta and the chip and guacamole are great .also nachos very good the only thing they need to work on is there a little slow behind the counter.
(4)Marybeth B.
Love love love! Authentic food always frrsh. I'd eat here everyday if I could. The pork is outstanding and the service is good.
(5)Becky B.
Food was delish! Staff was super nice and took extra care with my husband's order because he can't chew for several weeks - they went above and beyond, can't wait to go back! My tacos were out of this word - so authentic!
(5)Kenny L.
I eat at a lot of Mexican restaurants and this place stands out pretty well. Their steak nachos are delicious, and the steak tasted fresh. I really like their king burrito also. My siblings buy from here a lot, and I get to eat their food ;).
(5)Kim F.
Good basic Mexican food with some tasty sauces. I think the fillings for the tacos and burritos should be more "authentic". Sour cream and orange cheese isn't part of authentic Mexican. There are too many "American-zied" Mexican places around and El Fuego would stand out even more if they would make that little effort.
(4)Karly M.
We don't have a lot of GOOD Mexican food out this way. I thought this place was really tasty. Will definitely be back!
(5)James W.
This has become one of my new lunch spots. Good food, good service and close to my job. Definitely worth a try if you're craving mexican food on a budget.
(4)Stephen T.
Very friendly, clean, and the food was delish. Burritos are a good size.
(5)A R.
Had high hopes for this place, when it opened so close to home. It was deserted when we got there, not a good sign. The chips and salsa were very good, but not complimentary. The refried beans were watery and tasteless... The rice bland. The rest of the food was decent, but not enough to make me choose El Fuego over the better places in town. The prices should be much, much cheaper for what you get.. They are the most expensive taco joint around.
(2)Myles R.
I ordered a steak burrito and it was pretty good. It was a little juicy which made it a little hard to eat. Overall, its a cool little joint to go for a quick bite!
(4)Max L.
Finally a challenger to Taqueria Las Cumbres in this area. Authentic and fresh tasting, go with the taco plate cantina style, which gives you limes so you decide however much juice you want on your taco. Pretty good value as well (around $7).
(5)Crystal T.
This place has some incredible food. I recently moved here from the West Coast and I miss the Chili A LOT but the chili here is pretty good and the food is on my number one list.
(5)Christina D.
I ordered the kids meal that comes with beef tacos. I opted for a healthier option for my 2 year so I asked for chicken instead. This was subbed with no additional charge and I was a happy customer until my 2 year old spit it out saying it was too spicy. I thought the manager would understand and make my toddler a cheese quesadilla possibly. The manager said it was our fault for substituting the chicken for the beef. In my defense I suggested we should have been told the chicken might be too spicy for a young child. We were told we would have to pay for another meal or they could just give us one taco. We opted for the damn taco so our child wouldn't be hungry. The food is very American and lacks any authenticity as they claim. This is the kind of customer service that closes down and fast! We will not be returning. We will drive a little further and go to algonquin mexican restaurant....way better and actually authentic!
(2)Jimmy K.
Really good Mexican food here. I will definitely be going back. Nachos really didn't have much meat in them, but burritos were great!
(4)Dave O.
Very friendly employees and pretty turn around time on preparing the food. The food itself is very tasty. What prevented a higher rating was pricing/.portion size. I swear the container my side of rice came in cost as much as the rice that was in it. Whenever I order a burrito form a place like this, I can only eat half. Today I finished the burrito and rice and was still a little hungry.
(3)Chris S.
We were excited about the prospect of a good homemade burrito in the neighborhood. And we were disappointed. This is a place where you order and pick up and the counter so a take out order shouldn't take 15 minutes. It was freshly cooked but that's about the best I can say. The ground beef is amazingly greasy, the steak was touch and chopped so fine that you couldn't taste it. The habinero salsa was bland and barely spicy. My wife said it best " chipolte is 10 times better."
(2)Catherine G.
Wonderful service, atmosphere fun and full of life! Affordable and very tasty! I personally love the variety in their vegetarian choices! Eat the habanero hot sauce it rocks!!!
(5)Daniela H.
It really bothers me that the vegetarian options are marked vegetarian but contain animal products such as lard in the beans and chicken stock in the rice. I understand that they are trying to be "authentic" but even with their attempt at authenticity, everyone seems to dislike their rice and their beans. Tacos El Norte on Algonquin Road makes their beans and rice REALLY vegetarian and still tastes extremely authentic to me. So I ordered two vegetarian tacos without beans, and of course, they added beans to the order. I went back and told them and I still had to pay for the new tacos without the beans. These tacos contained some grilled peppers and onions, and the rest of the tortilla was filled with overwhelming amounts of lettuce, and very runny sour cream. I took one bite of the taco and was disappointed. Took another bite, this time with the green salsa (that seems to have sour cream in it? It was a strange color and lacking in flavor) and got a piece of steak in my mouth. Clearly, they are very unaware and careless as to making sure their meat and vegetables are segregated. I'm glad I'm not allergic to beef or poultry like some people are, or else I would have sued. When this place becomes more aware and cares enough to make sure their vegetarian options are actually vegetarian, and maybe wash the pan or clean the grill when making a vegetarian meal after having cooked meat on the same surface, I may come back. Tacos El Norte has never disappointed me and is far better priced than this place. Try going there.
(1)Ellman M.
I stopped in this place the other day while working. I had the steak nachos, which were pretty good. The cheese was very "canned" looking, which I wasn't too happy with. The food was prepared quickly and the presentation was great. The blonde cashier was very friendly and helpful. I'll be back
(4)Sarah H.
The staff was nice and the food Tasted good, but both my boyfriend and I got terrible food poisoning from this place. We were sick for days...we tried it once sand haven't been bank since...
(1)Rosie G.
Wonderful food!! Love going to this place!!!! The people that work there are really nice and its clean and welcoming. The salsas are awesome!!i hope they stay around for a long long time!!
(5)Mirza B.
First off i would like to start by saying that the place is very clean and inviting. Service was prompt and friendly. This is your typical mexican taco joint you can find in the suburbs so I dont agree with some of the bad reviews that i see on here. Some of you are being very critical and if you want real mexican food go to mexico. And I am 100% positive that those same people go to Chipotle and love it. El Fuego is a lot better then Chipotle. I thought the tacos were very tasty and the habanero sauce was spicy, just how i like it. The meat was fresh and not chewy which is extremely important. Tortas and Burritos were good as well. If you are on your lunch break and are craving tacos this is the place to go. Or if you are at the bar on the weekend and you got the munchies visit this place rather then Taco Bell. It hits the spot and does not give me the bubble guts in the morning. Overall pretty satisfied with this simple taco joint and will visit frequently.
(4)The Truth ..
The name of this restaurant should be "El Blando". I decided to try this new restaurant the other night and was hoping for a good dining experience since the area is lacking a good Mexican restaurant. I ordered steak tacos and al pastor tacos. The steak tacos had no meat flavor at all. It was like they dumped a lot of meat on the flat-top and instead of the meat grilling, it steam cooked all the flavor out of the meat. As for the al pastor, all I could taste was pineapple, no pork flavor at all. These are two types of tacos that if you are going to open a Mexican restaurant, you better be able to make without any issues. Tried to save this dinner by trying all three of their salsas, but even the salsa had no authentic Mexican flavors. The salsa verde was bitter, the salsa roja was flavorless and their attempt at a habanero salsa was laughable. The only thing that had any flavor was the tortilla chips which comes with another type of salsa which I put on my tacos in order to add some flavor to them. Oh, let me not forget that the chips and salsa are not complimentary, they cost $2.00. Just because you put meat on a tortilla and serve what you consider salsa does not qualify you as being a Mexican restaurant. Even though the taco is a simple street food, it takes years of practice to understand the complexity of how to use the various chiles in order to make delicious tasting salsas that are a staple in authentic Mexican cuisine. El Fuego falls way short when it comes to understanding and executing this time honored tradition.
(1)Adam P.
I'm a pretty big fan of Mexican food. El Fuego has converted me from Tacos El Norte. I've only had their steak tacos, but I can say that they're damn good. While the steak from Tacos El Norte can be rough and a little fatty at times, the steak at El Fuego is very tender and tastes great! The prices are pretty comparable as well. I'm not really sure what is with all the bad reviews that this place is getting. I just don't see it. Give this place a try; you just might like it!
