Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

One of the worse experiences I have ever had. Went with friends to have a nice dinner. Three little girls a mother of two of them. Everything started out find until the food and drinks came. The kids would not eat the food because it was cold. The drinks were watered down and we could not drink them. They the bill came we explained the problem and thought something could be done, so the overly large manger started out explaining to is that we were drunk and that we were as he put it ( deceiving the inn his own words ) and that we needed to pay for the food. We said no and he then said if we don't pay he was going to call the police. We told him please do. And then he left us. He then back I then asked then to please redo the food order for the kids and replace the drinks we did not drink since we only tasted them. He said no! You are both drunk! Mind you we had only tasted the drinks. I then asked for the bill and he would not give it me to pay. I then said if you are not going to give as the bill to pay then we are leaving. He then said if you do then I will have you arrested. At this point I'm now trapped and can not pay the bill or leave. So this started an argument. Now I'm confronted with a over 300 pound manager and words were said which lead to the manger getting so mad that he grabbed my neck an strangled me and I fell to the floor from lack of oxygen and injured my neck from the mangers strangle hold. My friend tried to stop him and she was pushed and hit in her chest by the manger also, all the while this is being recorded by the restaurant cameras. I feel sorry for the staff that works there. You can tell by their faces that this manger must have a temper and they can nothing about it as to fear losing their jobs.

Horrible food and horrible service. I will not be back. We were seated on the patio and it seemed the staff completely forgot about us. Our very simple queso appetizer took over 40 minutes, we had to continually ask for refills of chips and then remind them that we had asked for them. Menus weren't offered so someone in our party had to get up and track them down. We had to ask for water and once that was brought to the table it wasn't refilled once. Apparently Sunday is all-day happy hour and the quality of food and drinks is exactly what you pay for. I'd be surprised if the margarita I ordered had any alcohol in it at all. It tasted like a watered down lemon-lime Gatorade. I ordered a mango chicken salad, which was so awful I had to send it back. The lettuce, which was very obvious from a bagged "salad mix" tasted like it'd been sitting in their fridge for weeks. The texture was soggy and there was nothing but a horrible flavor to it. The manager did come out to let me know he was sorry and that when he looked at the salad he could tell there was too much dressing on it. I informed him it had absolutely nothing to do with the very tasteless dressing, but the very old product they were trying to pass off as a "fresh" salad. My husband's meal was a little better - chicken fajitas and a draft beer. The beer took 15 minutes and we were right outside the bar area. The fajitas were just okay. Happy hour specials are great, but I'd much rather pay full price somewhere else that has good food AND good service. There is nothing worse than feeling like an afterthought while dining in a restaurant.

Our server was awesome! His name was Jason. The food was excellent and our whole family had a fantastic time!
(5)Nichole D.
Food is really good 90% of the time however the staff is hit or miss. Some of them are really awesome but the manager and many others really don't care. The manager is extremely rude and unhelpful. His behavior and attitude is enough that I will not return to either location. People don't normally drive 30 minutes to be ignored by the waitstaff or have a manager roll his eyes at you.
(2)Madam M.
It was just okay. I love Mexican, food arrived in about 2 minutes, Margaritas..Okay Found a hair in my food which just about to gross anyone out.
(3)David B.
It is what it is, have not found a good Mexican restaurant on Boise yet you always know what you get when you come here, ok food and ok service, nothing to write home about, but ehhh.
(3)Jeff B.
Whenever I feel like going to cabo or cancun Mexico, I remember I don't have a lot of money and go to on the border and feel like I'm in Mexico. Prices are good. Great food, service, music, and happy hour. Staff always makes adjustments at my requests.
(4)Kira K.
The staff was wonderful, they're basically the only good thing about this restaurant. It's decorated like the living room of a white Grandmother that's trying to be "ethnic". The food is terrible and its the least authentic I've ever tasted. Honestly you would be better off eating a frozen Hungry Man enchilada in your living room than eating at this establishment.
(1)LeeAnn C.
My husband and I have come here twice. We like to sit in the bar, lots of TV & they always have the games on. The beer selection is good & the chips are delish. I tried the guacamole this most recent time and it was DESPERATELY lacking flavor. I had to salt and pepper it like crazy. I was disappointed. If we find ourselves back out in the area & wanting mexican food, we will probably go to Cafe Ole.

After seeing all these one and two star reviews for the Eagle outlet, I think I'll repeat what I said awhile ago in reviewing the Spectrum outlet. These places are crummy Mex food because they do not cook at these places, they get most of their food from a central kitchen and it is heated and served. The Manager at the Spectrum outlet told me to my face that this was the case. Avoid On the Border like the plague.
(1)Gisela J.
The staff here is very welcoming.. The food was okay.. if you are looking for authentic Mexican food I don't recommend coming here. The mango chicken salad needed more mango and jicama in it. The fajitas where okay beans didn't have much of flavor.. the guacamole dip was just avocados with cilantro. No flavor. It was missing the onion the tomato the lime juice the salt. The only thing I liked about coming here was the services. Our server was great. On top of it all food was way over priced for the quality of the food.. I can't believe the avocado dip was $7 bucks I can buy everything I need to make homemade guacamole for $7 bucks.

Came in, after I was seated the seating hostess sighed and stated "I forgot again", only to walk away and return with their special menu, afterwards, my brother, fiancé and I sat down, quietly, for 10min without even the glimpse of an associate. Needless to say this is unacceptable, we are at the RAM now, much better service right off the bat. Also, On the border tonight was very slow, one family finishing their meal, a couple behind us, and an employee eating to our left. Not busy at all, 0 excuse for this behavior.
(1)Michelle C.
My husband were in the mood for Mexican and were close by so decided to stop in. The service started out fine but once we got our food were were completely forgotten about. The busboy was actually the most friendly and helpful person in the place. The food was bad just bad. I had the Baja plate which is a stuffed fried avocado and an enchilada. It was dry and very over done. The sauce was dried to my enchilada like it had been sitting under a warmer for awhile. My husband had a burrito that came cut in half. Half of the burrito had the chicken while the other half had the rice and beans. It was really salty and dry. We paid $30 and left feeling completely unsatisfied and regretful!

Entering the restaurant my husband and I decided on going into the bar. We picked an empty table, hostess followed as we started to sit I noticed the hostess hurried and wiped broken chips off the table, no big deal but after I sat I seen spilled dried salsa, when waiter Finally came to take drink orders we ask table to be wiped as we sat to early at dirty table. Chips salsa came (which were great) drinks came, they were good, shaken margaritas. Table not wiped. Chips salsa gone. It is a all you can eat chips and salsa. No one came to offer more. When our dinner arrived it was delivered by someone from the back. Our waiter did not check on us. He finally remembered to come clean our table. When I tried my flauta it tasted like over fried in bad grease. My husbands fajaita was great except for the end peice of inedible onion. We decided to stay and have one more drink but for 15 minutes could not make eye contact with anyone. Decided to just get the heck out. I have never left a bad review but I came 3 hrs from the mountains and was looking forward to a great mexi dinner. So disappointed! I just wonder if managers were not there that night. They all seemed like young kids that didn't know how to care for everyone.
(1)Matt V.
We had some great service and great food! We highly recommend this restaurant. The superior dinner was well worth the price. The enchiladas were yummy and the environment was over all quality. Room to improve with making us feel more welcome. :)
(4)Keith A.
I eat here a lot. The food is good. I have eaten at other on the boarders and it hasn't been as good. One thing g of note. The service is typically very slow. If you know that God g in, you won't have any surprises

Do NOT come here if you're expecting good food. My family and I are just finishing up the worst dinner we've had in Idaho. Took 1.5 hours to receive our food. $17 ultimate fajitas were over cooked and literally included 3 small shrimp, 4 strips of steak measuring 1/4" wide (that generous) by 1.5 inches long and the same in chicken. This was accompanied by a fistful of shredded pork that was too dry to eat. The food was served a dish at a time over about 20 mins on top of that. The only good thing? The manager was very nice. Apologized and took off our fajitas and gave us coupons for an additional $10 off. Very nice. Overall a tasteless, dissatisfying evening. Nice manager, wish I knew his name. Probably will NOT be back.
(1)Deanna S.
When we arrived, it took almost 10 minutes to even be acknowledged and seated. Once seated, we were not acknowledged for another 15 minutes. We were just about to walk out when our server arrived. He complained about being under staffed and the majority of the servers being in mc call. Finally got our drinks another 10 minutes later and my glass was so sticky I had to go wash my hands. It's been 35 minutes and my husband still has yet to get his drink or have chips and salsa brought to us. This is my first time here and I will never be back! Very poor service. Can't comment on the food because it has yet to come Update.... an hour and 10 minutes later our food arrived, my order was totally wrong. Had a chat with the manager who was sweating profusely, and not very helpful. Got chips and salsa at the same time our order arrived. Food was decent, once I got what I ordered. Nothing special. Definitely avoid this place in the future.
(1)John C.
Epic fail at customer service. Received 3 napkins and asked for some more. Upon asking for the additional napkins, was given a strange look. Don't question me, just give me some freaking napkins!!!!! Manny was our server and he was kind of useful at best. Was attentive at first but then lost interest. Food is just ok too. If you can make it to the On the Border in Boise, I recommend it!
(2)Alexandra F.
My husband and I eat here ALL THE TIME. They have $2 Tacos Tuesdays which is my favorite. They seem to be able to accommodate vegetarians pretty easily. I wish they hadn't started putting corn in their lime rice though. The service is always a bit slow every time we go in, so they could work on that. There are also inconsistentancies in how spicy their food is, it can be frustrating. All in all we keep going back though!
(3)Teresa V.
Celebrated National Margarita day here. The service was extremely slow. If you like long and I mean long lunches this is the place for you. 2 1/2 hours to eat a meal is a little long. The Drinks took forever to come as well. Probably will not visit this On the Border again.
(2)Kellie D.
I ordered guacamole as an appetizer and when the waitress brought it over she said we were lucky because they only made it an hour ago and it was way fresher then normal ! I thought that was gross/weird to say our food was made an hour ago. I also ordered a chimmy chonga and it was gross. Don't eat here!
(1)Kelly S.
I don't know why I chose to come here, I should've known better. I almost feel like Taco Bell's food is better. I know, that's going far. They're Spanish rice and has to be pre-made and come in cans. Also, Rosarita refried bean are way better. I'm giving them two stars because they have good salsa.
(2)Katherine J.
Food was ok. Beans and rice were cold and way too much meet on their Posada and meat was dry. And not favorable,
(3)Jennifer H.
Have I mentioned I love this place? There used to be one at the mall where I lived in Northridge and I had missed it so much after it closed. So when I moved here it was one of the first places I went to, to have dinner. It's by far one of my favorite Mexican places. Drinks: you cant go wrong with just a house margarita. If your in the mood for something different you can get a Sangria Swirl Margarita or MY personal favorite the Pefect Patron Margarita. Starters: Do yourself a favor and get the Steak Nachos or the Gac Live those are my favorites. If you want leftovers, get the Sampler. Lunch: They have a wonderful lunch menu with everything from smaller burritos to a lunch sized fajita. AMAZING!! Entrees: I highly suggest the Ranchladas. I love them. Always have. I recently tired the Queso Chicken for the first time. You cant go wrong with that either. Just go. Get some margaritas and get some food. Be happy and come back.

We had a late dinner here tonight and I was skeptical at first because I thought maybe the restaurant wouldn't be up to the task since they were due to close in an hour. I was wrong. We were seated right away and the server was there to get our drink order. We ordered the food and it was out and piping hot in about twenty minutes. My husband and I chose the combo special where you select two or three items. I had Chile Rellenos and a chicken enchilada---both were delicious! I sampled some of my husband's cheese enchilada with red sauce and it was really good. In the past the menu did not have flan for dessert which to me is a must for any Mexican restaurant. It is now featured so we ordered some and it was excellent--served with a few strawberries and blueberries. Good job, On The Border! We'll be back!
(4)Ricardo R.
The place looks good. The food, however, not so much. I ordered the three fish tacos and they were pretty much flavorless. I was only able to taste the tortilla and the veggies. My plate had side servings of rice and beans, a staple of Mexican restaurants everywhere. It's not to difficult to mess these up, but this place manages to excel at it. The beans taste like the bean dip out of those little Frito Lay cans. The rice, in my opinion, tastes like instant rice that comes in a box you buy at grocery stores... the generic brand, not the good stuff. I won't be returning for the food at this place.
