Fast seating, awesomely friendly staff. Food was ok, although I have to admit, the hash browns were terribly bland. Didn't seem to have any butter or salt or anything. Was a little disappointed as the rest of the food/experience was so good. Hopefully it was a fluke and next time we go they were be great!

my favorite place to have breakfast!!! the staff is super friendly, and nothing beats their food! try the cinnamon roll French toast!!!!!
(5)Tanya M.
This is by far the best place for breakfast I've been in the Boise area. The food is flavorful without being too salty. The portions are very generous. I'd probably share with my daughter next time. They were very accommodating of my substitutions. The service was crazy fast and very friendly. We will come back next time we want breakfast!
(5)Jim G.
You have to stop in here. The breakfast's here are fantastic. I always get the biscuits and gravy with eggs, bacon and potatoes. Lots of good old fashioned home cooked food. Lunches are a little bit of a let down, but you can't beat this place for breakfast. The staff makes you feel like everyone there is family. The old timers are great to listen too. Stories of long ago in Meridian and Boise. On the weekends expect a 10 to 15 min wait ..... at least. But it's worth it.

I've been to this restaurant at least 30 times in the past 10 years... When we have the day off of work and we want a nice filling breakfast or lunch, this is the place we go. Love their scrambled eggs, soda is awesome, waiters are always friendly, but the best thing is the homemade donuts right when you walk in the door. Read the daily paper, watch the people come and go and enjoy the meal. WISH they were open for dinner!

My wife and I have been here around 5 or six times now. The service has always been fast and friendly, and the food is great, especially for the price. There are other places to go for breakfast in Meridian but this is the only place we go!
(5)Rachel Z.
one of my absolute faves! GREAT PRICES, LOVELY FRENCH TOAST!
(5)jason b.
Good, fresh breakfast in a diner atmosphere. I had the chicken fried chopped pork patty (not it's real name but I can't remember so... that's what it was) that was crispy, flavorful and tender.
(4)Mitch M.
Love this place!!! If we are going out to breakfast this is the only place we go. The food is always great and the service is awesome! Make sure you grab a homemade donut. They only make a limited amount so I always order one to go first thing and eat it later in the day after the food coma from there amazing breakfast has worn off. From the outside it doesn't look that special but trust me it is awesome!!

This place is great. First time I came here I was seated promptly and a cup of hot black coffee was sent in front of me. Their coffee cups are huge so they don't have to keep coming back for refills and you can sip on your coffee for quite some time. I ordered bacon and eggs with eggs over easy. Do you order came out quick and exactly as planned. Sick cut bacon that was perfectly crispy, and over easy eggs that were perfectly cooked. I had wheat toast and country potatoes which were not greasy. All in all this place isn't much to look at from the outside, in fact it looks like an old gas station. But once you get on the inside you're treated like family and serve delicious breakfast food from what it appears to be a very consistent performance.

Here's another place I've driven past 100 times. It looks like some old diner & ain't much to look at from the outside. I was doing a couple of business meals with a client and she recommended meeting here instead of a little better known joint in town. I wasn't sure about this place, but it exceeded my expectations. I had the chicken fried steak & eggs. You can choose between a pancake or hash browns & toast. I choose the hash browns & toast. It was a very full mean and I was already planning on skipping lunch & only having an grapefruit. I probably got my full day allotment of calories for breakfast, so you have to sacrifice to get what you want, right? It was worth it & I enjoyed every bite. I held off licking the plate and just used my bread to clean the plate as best as possible. We had one more follow-up meeting for the business at hand & when she asked if we could meet there again, I didn't hesitate to agree.

The food was good but is rather highly priced for breakfast. Our waitress wasn't great, I think she may have been new. We had to wait for refills on water several times. I would go again but I don't like spending $11-$15 / person on breakfast.

My family has been going to Express Cafe for 14 years and loved it. We felt like friends to the staff. Then things changed which is a long story. I was thrown under the bus. I have tired 3 to 4 times to feel like we did for the 14 years, but it will never happen not because of me. The food is good so I would try it, just go for the food tho.

One of life's most under-appreciated pleasures is a good, local breakfast spot. Express Cafe has become our go-to, especially if we don't want to schlep down to Big City or Goldy's. I go into chicken-fried steak & eggs withdrawal if it's too long between visits. My wife says the other menu items are very good -- I wouldn't know. If you're looking for innovative artisanal cuisine or ambience , this isn't your place. It's straightforward, unfancy breakfast fare, consistently well-prepared and served up by some of the most pleasant wait-staff you can imagine. Be prepared to wait during weekend prime-time. Weekdays are also busy, but there's always room after the morning rush or at the counter.

I live in California, everytime i go see my little brother...I GO HERE and multiple times! Great people, great food, great prices!!!! Simply Awesome!!!
(5)Mike H.
Great little cafe. Had an omelet ( tasted just like home made) with hash browns. Really friendly servers. A lot of food, so ask to split the order. They are happy to do it. The wife and I will be coming back soon.

Consistent things about this place: very clean (as in spotless), extremely nice staff, good food. That's in order. I've been here a few times now and today I used it as backup after another breakfast joint snubbed us. Food is great. The menu is standard breakfast items but everything tastes and looks great. That's the only reason I gave them 4 instead of 5 stars. The waffles are incredible. I was hurrying up to eat it before my stomach realized it was full long ago. Disclaimer: This place doesn't look like much from the outside. But give it a shot. The staff have all been there for a long time. There's a short wait to be seated. The longest I've ever waited was still less than 10 minutes. I always recommend sitting at the bar though. Be social for once and meet some new folks. The coffee is very smooth and it never ends. We had the chicken fried steak and the strawberry Belgian waffles. If that doesn't make you happy for breakfast, I don't know what will.

I just cant say enough good things about the Express Cafe. Ive never been there for lunch until today. Best hamburger I have eaten in a long time. I had the BBQ Bacon and my hubby the Jalapeño Burgers. Both were juicy and flavorful. The meat was cooked perfectly and the cheese and sauces complimented the burgers. I liked that the fixings come on the side and I could choose to eat my tomatos not on the burger. Fries were delicious especially with the homemade fry sauce. The staff is a whole other story. Muliltiple waitresses that have been there over 15 years. Obviously this is a good place to work. They are all friendly and remember us from visit to visit. They are friendly and very efficient with out being rude or pushy. Upon leaving I counted 5 thank you and come agains.
(5)Jeff S.
Me and my daughter's favorite place to eat. Everything on the menu is delicious. My family has been going there since I was a young lad & now I take my child there. The staff is family like & they seem very tight with each other. When my friends suggest somewhere else to eat, I always get them to go here. I come here because I know what I'm going to get & I know I will leave satisfied.
(5)Andrea D.
Great place for the older crowd but not a place for people who actually like food. The service was great, the establishment was clean but the food was mediocre at best. We ordered biscuits and gravy, sausage, bacon, hashbrowns, and eggs. Biscuits were cake like in texture, gravy tasted like it came out of a package, and the rest was ordinary. Again, nothing to write home about.
(2)Christy L.
My favorite breakfast place! Delicious food, cooked to order just how you want it. The staff is so friendly, the service is fantastic and the food is so good. A great start to the day which keeps me coming back. Highly recommend!
(5)John M.
A repeat visit. How do they do it. The staff doesn't change. The food only gets better. The portions are large. Talked to the owner - what a nice guy. Doesn't look it from the outside, but there are good reasons people line up outside for a seat.
(5)Taylor R.
Delicious food, WONDERFUL service. We'll visit here again and recommend it to friends and family.
(5)Lori N.
Great traditional breakfast and fantastic staff! Large portions. Definitely get your money's worth!
(4)Armani D.
These guys NAILED IT!!!! Being a fitness freak, I am EXTREMELY PARTICULAR on how I want things cooked, and prepared, and these guys just deliver flawlessly EVERY TIME!! I'm posting a pic of my customized fit for life omelette comprised of proteins, fat and greens....yummy!!
(5)Angela K.
Pretty good food, but this is not a single $ place. It's more like $$. Our average family of 4 had breakfast....$52. Little painful since we're used to around $40. On the upside, the service was great & food was tasty. So if your looking for good food & not on a budget, this is a good place to come.
(4)Jeanette M.
I'm a die hard chicken fried steak fan and....they did a GREAT job! Their gravy is home-made which always makes a difference. I was good and shared a bite with my husband but just one. The nice thing it seems that they always have a different special listed on their sign everyday. The customers did seem to be an older crowd but that could have been due to the fact that we went on a weekday morning. It was still a good group of people and everyone seemed to be glad that they were there. It's good to find a comfortable restaurant to eat at.
(4)Desiree L.
I think we found our new favorite place for breakfast! Express Cafe exceeded even the great expectations set by fellow yelpers :) The staff was super friendly and did a fantastic job. They made us feel welcomed and appreciated while handling our large table seamlessly. All our food came out piping hot and my special order came out perfect (I had the veggie omelette no eggs, sub hash-browns) and it was *heavenly*. This dinner is a great, low key local place I was so excited to find. ENJOY!
(5)Crystal N Colin G.
This place usually has a wait list in the mornings for good reason; it's the best breakfast in town. Large menu, the best staff, and incredibly quick. Don't let a wait deter you, it's usually just a few minutes and is well worth it. I've eaten here about once a month for years and never been remotely disappointed. So delicious.
(5)Sheila C.
Great food and excellent service. My coffee and water were always filled immediately. They also have other side options if you don't want the potatoes and toast. They even have a drive thru window to order breakfast or lunch. All the staff were extremely friendly.
(5)Sharif B.
A typical diner, but lacking compared to other Boise counter-parts. I went here do to the high star rating, but found the food to be above average, but the prices and decor were just average. Nothing too special, WYSIWYG Service was above par and deserves 4 stars, but the overall experience left me wanting more. Maybe it was the school cafeteria florescent light feel or just the customers there on the day we went.
(3)Christopher S.
I tried the biscuits and gravy half portion. It was really quite good. The staff is friendly, fast, and courteous. The price is excellent footer the quality of the good. Definitely give this place a try.
(4)Jenn C.
Great breakfast place! Food was good; big servings. Great customer service. We went on a Monday morning and it wasn't busy at all, but I'm sure it would be on the weekend. Glad we finally tried this place. We'll be going back! Typical diner setting, but very clean and seems to be well run.
(5)E B.
One of the best breakfast in the Meridian area. Never been disappointed in the food or the staff. An easy four stars always.
(5)Kevin Q.
Still LOVE the staff here. My favorite place to have breakfast. However, today it's like my favorite cousin died. I went in for breakfast and Express Cafe did something that can't be forgotten. They changed their Bacon. They no longer carry Daily's Bacon. Some stuff was on my plate that didn't taste like Bacon. The eggs were still fantastic but breakfast wasn't the same breakfast I've been having for years. You know when family can mess things up and you don't visit for a while? Well today, I feel like that's what has happened with my favorite breakfast spot. No matter how much you love the people, the Bacon is what called out to me. They're back to Daily's... I am a 5 star in love with this place again guy. :)
(4)S R.
Hands down one of the best places to have breakfast in the valley. The food is great and the staff is better. The owner is a really nice guy. We love it.
(5)Carl Y.
Great for breakfast. Really a locals type place, old building, but clean. Fast and personable service. Food was good, well cooked, and large servings for a fair price. Really liked their bacon, tasty and good sized strips. One thing we would improve is their coffee. Farmer Bros. doesn't cut it for me. Wonder if they would let me bring in my own? Next time I'll ask.
(4)Cheryl M.
Best breakfast in town! Ken runs a great kitchen, staff is friendly, food is consistently great! We frequent Express Cafe often. They even have a drive-thru for those times you can't sit and visit.
(5)Troy G.
Usually when I go out for breakfast I use chicken fried steak and eggs as a benchmark for how good the place is. You can tell in one bite if the chicken fried steak or gravy is pre-packaged junk. Not here. Also in my eyes a skilled line cook should be able to make sunny-side up eggs with all the yolk runny and none of the whites. I very...very rarely find this but they hit my second mark here. I love nothing better than sopping up a mix of gravy, yolk, and tabasco on toast at the end of my meal. Coffee was never more than half empty. But that's just the food. This place has been here for over 20 years and you can tell. Not because it's worn down and dirty (which it isn't) but because you can see a steady stream of regulars in and out of the door. You can tell they've been coming here for over 20 years with their families and friends. Great small town feeling in this place and the staff is warm and welcoming. Quite possibly the best meal I've had in Boise.
(5)Damian S.
Fast friendly and delicious, exceeded my expectations. I wasn't expecting much from exterior. I was amazed at how fast I was served and had my order in front of me. Great quality food, too easy to overindulge though on all the home cooked goodness

If you look up 'Greasy Spoon' in the dictionary, chances are, you'll find a picture of Express Cafe right alongside the definition. Nothing flashy at all, just a room filled with bright florescent lights, cheap silverware, friendly servers who've likely worked there for 20+ years, and not a single item of fruit to be found anywhere on the menu. If you're trying to eat healthy, look elsewhere. But if you're looking for a meal that's bound to slay even the mightiest of hangovers, pay 'em a visit. With breakfast items like biscuits and gravy, country omelettes, waffles, pancakes, hash browns and the like... it's the kind of wake-me-up that's sure to make you want to take a nap about 45 minutes later. Great if you're planning on watching the entire Star Wars trilogy with the remainder of your day, but if you have any important business to attend to, stick to the home pantry for brain food like oatmeal or blueberry yogurt.

This place has been in Meridian for over 20 years. Good food, good prices, very friendly staff, and breakfast served all the time. Easy parking. Looks like they have a drive through, but not sure if it is in use. The Cinnamon roll french toast was great. The biscuits and gravy was very good. The fresh dough-nuts were delicious - they are mini-cakes, so split one with someone else - very filling. The breakfast burrito was nothing special. I would skip the orange juice. There must have been a dozen people over 300 lbs dining here, one of which was on oxygen. Calories are NOT listed on the menu. Waitstaff knows everyone by name - nice touch. I will probably return after I try out the Sunrise Bakery & Cafe.

After reading the reviews, we decided to try this place out. We ordered takeout. When we called in the kid that took our order sounded confused over everything we asked for (toast, eggs - sunny side up, hash browns and french toast). They were fast. They said it'd be ready in 5-10 min. When I arrived to pick it up I think I dealt with the same kid. When I asked him how much he looked confused and then when I gave him a $20 he didn't seem to know what to do with it and I wondered if he knew to bring me the change. I get home and the eggs were scrambled, they forgot the toast and the french toast came with no syrup! The food wasn't anything to brag about but filled us up. I would consider going in and ordering and trying it out in house but would never order out from there again. The customer service that we received deserves NO stars. I'm giving 2 stars because the food didn't taste bad, it just was mediocre. I've had better and will probably seek out another diner/cafe if I decide I want a little breakfast fix and am not in the mood to cook. $15 was way too much money for what we received and our experience.
(2)Shagen M.
My husband and I came here on a Sunday morning. It appeared to be very busy but we decided to stay anyway. They had coffee and tea while you waited so that was a nice touch! We were seated probably within 10 minutes or so. The staff was very nice and friendly and the food was delicious!! We'll definitely be going back!!
(4)Beauford W.
This place is a decent greasy spoon. They seem to focus on Breakfast. The place was exactly what I expected. It's basically a diner that makes a good traditional breakfast. It's not anywhere near the quality of Goldy's but it is sufficient.
