We had dinner at The Mill last night. It has been several years for both of us since our last visit. We were seated in a smaller area next to two other couples, greeted by our servers quickly, it was quiet and very nice. The menu had a nice variety, though too expensive for what you are served, food and beverage. That being said, my ribeye was tasty, hot, a cooked to request. My bf's porterhouse was not very warm, over cooked, lacked flavor. Then, it happened. . . the hostess seated a group of 3 adults & 4 kids at the table next to us & the other adult couples who I would think it would it would be obvious were enjoying a quiet meal. We enjoyed children whining, banging silverware on the table, kicking the table legs, and unconcerned parents. We picked up the pace of finishing our meals, one of the other couples got the remainder of their meals boxed to go, and we then asked for our check. $101.05 for two steak dinners, one glass of wine, one beer, and loud children,,,,, we won't be back. We walked around the other dining areas before we left. There were a few other full tables scattered around, not quite sure why the family we experienced were seated next to us. Note to self: remember to ask for the non-kiddie section when making a reservation in advance at a "nice, expensive" restaurant.

The service was friendly... But the food is only fair and way over priced. The shrimp was small and chewy and not worth $32. The primrib french dip was not good. (Meat was dry and not good). Can't recommend this place and wont be back unless its to just stop by the bar and enjoy a cocktail. The huge fireplace is pretty awesome.

Not a fan of the mill. I've had a few meals there and much like the other reviewers it's an over hyped overpriced old place. I think people just go there out of habit of because they have it in their heads that's the only place for Fine dinning in McCall. Nothing could be further from the truth. There are some great chefs in McCall that take pride in their work. None of them work here.

We have been coming to McCall, ID for the last five years for spring break. One of the things that brings us back is drinks by the fire in the bar area prior to dinner. We usually sit for an hour or more before even moving on to dinner The food is alway spot on. Some reviews complain of price but considering we're from Dallas we are always more than happy with the costs. We usually split a small prime rib and salad and have more than enough food. A bottle of wine between couples is always enjoyed. The bartender is more than happy to tell about all of the beer taps and odd ends hanging throughout the restaurant. It is not a five star dining room but is exactly what we desire. Quaint local feel with good food and ambience. Dinner can be completed with another round of drinks by the fire before leaving. I would recommend The Mill over any place in town for steaks and bar ambience.

Friendly wait staff & fast service. Fair wine selection. Prime rib was cooked to perfection. Bite size beef tidbits tasty but a bit dry. Bread pudding warm & delicious.

This place was a huge disappointment!! The food was mediocre at best and kind of expensive!! The restaurant was very old in looks and feel. The wait staff were really nice and friendly.

The best prime rib in Idaho. This western restaurant isn't formal or fancy, but it has great meat. The prime rib is always seasoned perfectly with lots of flavor. The staff is friendly. Prices are a bit steep, but go ahead and spend a few extra bucks and get the large cut -- you'll be thankful you did.

This is our first time visiting McCall and we topped off our week with a prime rib dinner at the Mill. People have been pretty harsh with their reviews, but we enjoyed our dinner there . First of all the atmosphere was great . So much to look at. They even have a few old lift chairs from Brundage in the bar. Our salads were good. The prime rib was a very generous portion. The baked potatoes were a disappointment though - really hard. Not soft and fluffy. And imitation bacon bits?? Really, get in the kitchen and fry up some real bacon. But overall good. Loved the setting. An old time steak house!

We have been on the road for three weeks and without a doubt.....this was the WORST dinner yet. Started off badly when I asked the waitress what she would rec from their extensive and expensive menu. She said she would tell me if I would give her an idea of which dish I was leaning toward. WRONG answer maam. You know the quality if you work there and just give a little direction for godsake! Bread basket had four thin slices of warm rye? which was acceptable. Salad came and it was bagged lettuce with a very decent blue cheese. It all goes down hill from there. Prime rib was the worst I have ever had. Gristly, fatty and so poorly sliced, it was hard to cut it with a steak knife. That piece of crap meat was $25. My hubby had their giant french dip for $19. Old, well done leftover gristly fatty meat that had no resemblance to "giant" as described on the menu. This place was awful. Save your money and find a better alternative.

I'm giving The Mill four stars because from what I understand about McCall area restaurant standards -- my mom lives nearby -- it's about the best you're going to find for dinner. I'd probably give it three stars if it were located in a bigger city or if there were other/better places in the area. (It's a shame this great little mountain town does not have better eateries. If you're an aspiring restaurant chef/owner, you should consider moving here and opening a place. You'd probably do well.) On our first night in town, we ate at the bar "Beside" The Mill (that's what the sign says!) which is next door to the restaurant and allows smoking. (If you're anti-smoke, just go to the main restaurant. They have a bar area over there, too.) The "Beside" bar walls are adorned with all kinds of memorabilia and strange collectibles; it's worth a visit just to check it all out. (They also have a couple of pool tables and a pretty fun atmosphere for hanging out, so it would be a good place for a group to go for happy hour or an evening hang-out.) At the bartender's suggestion (Hi Danny!), we first tried the battered, deep-fried filet mignon tips. It may sound a little strange, but they were surprisingly good. I also ordered a meal, which was pretty good. (I wasn't crazy about the dressing on the caesar salad so if you're a caesar salad fan, go with something else.) The next night, we ate in the restaurant. I liked the atmosphere a lot; it is very "Idaho". The service was excellent (so the restaurant must have made some improvements, there, based on some of the bad reviews here). The waitress took our drink order right away and was quick with the service and refills throughout the meal. I ordered the 10-12 oz. prime rib. Although it wasn't the highest quality cut of meat on the planet, it was cooked as requested (medium rare) and actually exceeded my expectations in terms of tenderness and flavor. My dinner companion had the New York steak and said it was "decent." The bar area in the restaurant has an old-school stone circular fireplace in the middle of the room, which gives the room a really nice ambience. After dinner, we walked over and sat on one of the ski lift chairs (suspended from the ceiling) next to the fire for awhile, which was fun.

Absolutely loved the ambience of this place. The decor/artifacts are so interesting, there was always something to look at. There was a piano player at the bar providing music that was piped around the restaurant. We sat in an old ski lift hanging from the ceiling while we waited for our table to be set. So cool! The food was excellent. I had the prime rib from the "Lighter Fare" menu, and it was perfectly done. I guess by "lighter" they just meant it was smaller. They say it is a 6 - 8 oz prime rib. Mine was definitely more on the 8 oz end. Yeah! It came with soup or salad, so I ordered the soup because it's winter. The soup was clam chowder, and it was phenomenal. Everyone at the table loved the clam chowder. My kid got a cheeseburger with their thick cut fries, and those fries were the best fries I have ever had. Crispy and tasty. nom nom The wine was overpriced, but that's probably to be expected at a fine dining establishment. That's pretty typical anywhere you go. Service was prompt and friendly. Next time we are in McCall, we will definitely come back here and pig out some more.

Great ambiance. 3 waitresses?! Just need one! They take division of labor to a whole new meaning. The appetizers were good (clams) the prime rib was good but a bit pricey for what it was. The salmon was ridiculously overcooked. When it was brought to the waitresses attention she looked at us like we were crazy " I've NEVER had that complaint before". Anyone who has had any fish before would know this was destroyed fish. For $30 a plate it was unacceptable. The salad seemed like cheap bagged lettuce that was drenched in dressing. Oh but the atmosphere is nice.

Went to the Mill for dinner mid-week. The prime rib was very good, the mushroom soup was excellent, and the baked potato was alright. Service was very good. Two complaints: 1) we were there during happy hour, and found that meant only $0.75 off beers that were expensive in the first place -- no HH specials for food; 2) baked potatoes don't come with entrees -- instead, I had to pay $5.95 for a small potato add-on. When I pointed out to the waitress that the menu states "$3.95 for baked potato with dinner, $5.95 a la carte", she said that management only considers it "with dinner" if the diner states they don't want the vegetables that come with entrees but want to substitue a baked potato. The Mill used to have nice potatoes with their entrees, but the waitress explained that the new owner changed the policy. In Idaho, not having a potato with your entree and charging six bucks for a small one added on seems like nickel-and-diming your customers. Overall, 4 stars for food and service, 1 star for the new manager, whom our waitress explained has made changes that dozens of diners don't like (she even said she tells diners to send a letter to the manager telling him to stop messing with a winning formula). In the future, I'll skip the Mill to try Steamers, the restaurants at the Shore Lodge or the Hotel McCall, or other similar "high end" places.

Weird.... Was seated quickly and glanced at the paper menu/place mat in front of me. Most meals were around $30. I would have eaten in the attached bar area, but could not stand the smoke. A gal came over and asked what I would like to drink. Water was fine with me for now and I asked, " Do you guys have burgers or sandwiches?" Her reply was, "uhhhh, I'm just here for the beverage order you'll have to ask the waitress." REally??? Kept seeing the waitresses' head popping out from around the corner, but my wife had run to the car, so she wasn't coming out of her hiding spot until my wife came back. Finally she came and explained that they had burgers, but would have to go check on the price of them from next door. Again, weird. IT was late and I was over it so I decided to suck it up and spend 28 bucks on prime rib. They're out of it except the well done end cuts. Not for me. Ordered a different steak which came out tasty, but not $30 bucks worthy. Upon leaving we were warned of the mom and 2 cubs that have been seen in the back by the dumpster. Decided to drive back that way when we left and sure enough, there's a cub black bear leaving the dumpster. I've lived in bear country for many years and by not securing a dumpster full of meat trimmings and bones is a great way to get someone injured or be forced to kill a "problem" bear. Take responsibility for your town folks and wildlife and lock up your dumpster!

The Mill is our families favorite place for prime rib and a must visit whenever we visit the McCall area. The service is always wonderful, the atmosphere warm and cozy and the food is amazing.

Well the good : steak was cooked precisely. Staff was prompt and accommodating. The bad: my steak was not seasoned well at all. overpriced. The ugly: bagged lettuce for the salads. Seriously???? if I'm paying $30 for an entree ... come on.

What a terrible experience. Stopping here instead of the pancake place was a mistake. We were seated just fine, but then there are two waitresses, the food and the beverage. The beverage waitress came long after the food waitress did. When we got our meals my halibut was okay, but the kids ordered a hamburger, ribs, and a chicken sandwich. The hamburger and ribs were charred and inedible. The chicken was unflavored like it was boiled and not grilled. For the prices they charged you would think the quality of the meals and the preparation would have been better. Please avoid this place if you can.

This restaurant was recommended by three different people but was disappointing and overpriced. It's as if the people who are running the place think it's a top restaurant but are clueless about how to go about it. The salad was boring, slightly stale, iceberg lettuce straight from a bag. The vegetable beef soup was ok. The trout was overcooked. The steaks were ok (we do better at home with steaks from Costco). The ribs were a bit charred. We're not sure how you make a baked potato come out so tasteless, dry, and rubbery, and the corn was apparently from a can. The fries were overseasoned, but we suppose some people like them that way. (They forgot our daughter's fries, but quickly brought out a plate of fresh ones.) The bread pudding was hard and dry. The cheesecake at least was quite good. It would have been a tolerable meal at a cheap steakhouse, but for such high prices we expected something vastly better. (In fact, later in the week we went to Brick 29 in Nampa with more people, had more appetizers and desserts, and paid about the same price for a meal that was in an entirely different class.)
