Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

Workers weren't helpful and the tortillas were mushy and soggy with grease. The meat was delicious, I'll give them that. And I like the atmosphere inside. But I probably won't ever come back. The employee at the cash register was rude and seemed to be put out when I asked for extra salsa. I hope they fix this soon.

I came here with my girlfriend a few days ago. We have been here before and had excellent service and the food was great! The other day when we where waiting to pay for our food the girl and the register asks "are you a cop" and I said no I wasn't (I had my .45 on my hip) then the managr standing next the girl at the register starts to tell her "oh he's like one of those guys at Black Sheep" (a sport/hunting store where employees open carry) in a negative way. NOT a good way to welcome a guest. There are no signs saying it is prohibited to open carry in the restaurant. being from Idaho ive never had a problem with this anywhere else. I just don't feel like I need to be made fun of for exercising my right. It was very unprofessional. Im not too sure if he was the manager or not but he was just standing there for a long period of time while everyone else around him is working. Something need to be addressed. I have worked in restaurants before and ive seen people loose jobs over something as small as this.... My point is if you don't want firearms in the building post it!

Food was average. Guy behind counter not too friendly or accommodating but overall we would go back. The tortilla soup was good!

Burritos are pretty good when you want something quick and not wait too long, but if you're vegetarian, you really get ripped off. They charge you the same price as a meat entree and always forget that the guacamole is suppose to be free, the prices aren't that great for what you get and they'll charge you for anything you want to add. And don't even consider ordering the nachos vegetarian because all you'll get is cheese, a few beans scattered about, sour cream, and oh, a dollop of guacamole of they remember. The counter service pretty much is mediocre, but does depend on who's working (A majority of when I've gone there it is bad.) All in all it's alright, but I wouldn't consider this as a first option.

I love their burritos enchilada style, oh my! Chicken is my favorite, with extra lettuce and squeezing some lemon on top. I prefer either the mild or medium sauce, tried the hot and it was okay, but not my favorite. Sometimes the service is great, usually depends on who is behind the counter making your food. Usually the cashiers are girls who... don't talk much and can be pretty unfriendly. Which sucks. The prices are... well... Okay? They're a bit more expensive than you'd expect but a far cry better than Taco Bell, Del Taco or Atilano's at the very least. Too many calories though, so I sadly have to avoid for my health.

We do a family dinner out once a week and my son picked this place. If it had been up to me, I would have left the second I read the menu. But he had his heart set on it. It was terrible! They don't have refried beans, the rice is so salty it was ridiculous. Their tortillas are good but it leaves a weird powdery residue on your hands. Easily one of the worst meals I've ever had. I wish I had eaten at home. I'll never go back again, don't waste your money.

Food is amazing! And the mint limeade is divine. 3 stars because the service is horrendous. Staff doesn't explain choices well or up charges. And slow. I keep going back just for the pork tacos though and grin and bear the bad service!
(3)Emmanuel S.
Great food! Awesome daily specials! Excellent service! & they have home made tortillas all day! I really enjoy this restaurant and it wins for the most authentic Mexican restaurant in town...
(5)Jessika H.
Good food tastes fresh. Tortillas were great, they make them fresh all day they are thicker than most but really good. I had the chicken tacos rice and black beans, all good. Only drawback is you have to stand in line to order but u can watch them make everything as you wait
(4)Doug A.
If your looking for average, unauthentic mexican food then this is a good place for you to go. But if you want something really delicious, go to any of the local taco trucks in town. They are cheaper and taste a billion times better. But if inauthenticity is your thing, indulge.

Okay, 1st. I visited this restaurant and I thought that it was okay for Mexican food prepared by high school and college kids. However I remember the service to be pretty rude as you are corralled through the line. You wait even when its slow and the face on the other side of the counter is not making any effort to make food quickly and appealing. It's slopped together. The kids think they are running the joint. 2nd. I went back and took my family and this time it was busy, the line wrapped around the livestock like corral. The kids were moving really slow this time and like before the wait was not pleasant. The phone in orders were backing up the flow of the restaurant and the kids were over-there-head with confusion on what to do next. And this is where it gets spicy for me, the owner and the manager where standing in the back of the open kitchen where all the melting down was taking place and I am not talking about the cheese on the burritos, and they didn't lift a finger to help the staff help the customers. They sat back while everyone was feeling uneasy. I thought to myself I will never eat here again if these two people who are supposed to be, 1 teaching their employees good customer service skills, and 2 taking care of the guests don't really care. These fellows didn't give a hoot and as an American who thinks customer service in this country is taking a nose dive to catch up with the rest of the world, will not be giving my money to this place if the owner or GM or whatever and the manager won't lift a finger to satisfy hungry guests and impressionable college students. Overall the food is just okay, a little pricy for Mexican fast food, and the customer service is awful. Maybe if some of these bad reviews get to the owners they can change their attitudes about good customer service, it isn't difficult to care about people and show it. It isn't my privilege to give you my money for this kinda BS RIO Mexican Grill.

If you like to pay $8 for a taco...go for it. I prefer the smaller hole in the wall places that charge 1.50$ for a street taco. Just another fancy mex place sticking it to the gringo.

Big disappointment! I am a huge fan of Cafe Rio and was beyond excited when I found out that they were opening a store close to home - sadly I will not be returning. The line was short but the employees moved SO SLOWLY it took forever to get through it. I almost left before I even paid for my order. My tortilla was stone cold by the time I sat down to eat - not sure if that is because I waited in line for 15 minutes, or because it was cooked before I arrived and was just sitting in a stack behind the counter. The three people behind the counter didn't seem to have a clue as to how to actually make the food. When I finally ate my salad, it was just okay. Nothing special. I had Cafe Rio at the SLC airport a couple weeks ago that was 10 times better than the salad I had for dinner tonight. My advice is to eat here if you are desperate - if not, drive to Spokane and find a similar restaurant with MUCH better food (like Costa Vida or Chipotle).

Just tried it for the first time. Friendly staff, fair prices, and the food was great. It's like Chipotle but better quality. I had the quesadilla and it was fresh and tasty. The only hang up was depending on what a customer said the staff would break into song. They trudged through the song as if they were in pain. Frankly I don't blame them. You could tell they were trying to be cheerful but it wasn't working. Very gimmicky and you just feel bad for them... Nevertheless it was a great experience.

We went there for late dinner on Tuesday for a 1.95 taco deal. The wait was painfully long, however the tacos were very tasty. My mom got a chicken taco, my son three pork tacos, and I got one chicken and one steak. What's different about these tacos are the tortillas- they are handmade and have a unique flavor of the grill. If you like different hot sauces this place has a shelf with at least half a dozen of different brands and varieties. I would choose to go there on a different day or at least be ready for the wait next time. I was so hungry that taking a pic didn't even cross my mind.

My wife and I have been coming to this Cafe Rio location since it opened. The food was great and we liked the fast service. I have also used them to cater a party at my home and also several lunches at my office. The catering is great and the food always hot and fresh. For the past 9 months things have been different. Especially when eating at the restaurant. The service is now terribly slow. They appear to have lost the organization of their assembly line. Frequently run out of ingredients and have to wait while more is prepared. Don't call in a phone order. Often the tacos are prepared before the pickup time and are cold and soggy when we pick them up at the designated time. My wife and I would love to give this a better rating but in order to do that they will need to bring their level of service back to what it was during the first year it was open.

Food was great as always. Cashier was rude, unapologetic for messing up and over charging us and impatient. Won't be back to this location bc of her.

I've eaten here twice, and was disappointed both times. I had a shredded chicken burrito the first time, and a "fire grilled chicken" burrito the second time. The good: they make their own tortillas, and while the texture isn't great, the flavor of their tortillas is decent. The bad: It's expensive. The food is really, really bland. (First time I have ever needed to add salt to my food in a Mexican place.) The pico de gallo tastes of just plain diced tomatoes, no lime or other flavors that make for a good pico de gallo. (Heck, a can of Ro-Tel would have been way better). The "spice rub" on the grilled chicken was nonexistent, flavorless. The burrito is served in an aluminum pie pan, which is surprisingly difficult to eat out of, not to mention incredibly wasteful. The burritos are so wet and soggy that they are impossible to eat without making a mess: you can't pick it up because it falls apart, and it's so wet and rubbery that eating it with the provided plastic utensils is a chore. I was embarrassed just trying to get the scraps of soggy dripping tortilla into my mouth hole. (And when I went to wash my hands, the soap dispenser was broken. Nice touch.) For the record, one of my burritos was served "enchilada style" (ie. soaked in bland sauce and cooked in a conveyer oven) and one was not "enchilada style", but both were horribly soggy and gross. The staff is friendly, and reasonably attentive. The problems with this restaurant are not their fault. It's just a very bad concept, and bad recipes I think. There are much, much better burrito places within a 4 minute drive- don't waste your time or money with this place. (Hint: there is a taco truck a couple streets over that is mind blowing.)

I don't know what has changed in the past few months but I will not be back to this location again. Actually, I think I'm done with Cafe Rio all together. I know food can be expensive to produce but I will no longer be nickled and dimed to death anymore. I ordered a sweet pork quesadilla with a small side of house ranch dressing all to go. Apparently to go means shove my quesadilla as hard as possible to get it into the bowl so the lid fits. Then, I find out the small side of dressing is $.50 extra. WHAT!?!? 2oz of dressing for $.50 has to be a 2000% percent markup! Now that I'm done eating my quesadilla, I feel it was nothing special. I could have gotten a ton more food at Del Taco up the road and been just as content.

Oh hell no! I gave this place a better review! Now, no way Jose! This place is expensive! Offensively expensive! No one! No one! Should pay 10 bucks for a burrito! Don't over pay! Find a taco truck!!!!
(1)Christina G.
Worst management i have ever seen!!!! We were probably one of their best customers eating there once a week for the last year! However, we will never go back, nor will we recommend to anyone. Had an issue with a gift card that had been purchased there and given to us as a gift.... Card didn't work, had the receipt that was given with gift card, but for some unknown reason, it had been voided. The manager, Lisa, was horrible!!!!! Worst manager ever!!! She was Extremely confrontational, even following my husband out the door, laughing and raising her voice at us. We received a call later from another mgr apologizing on her behalf saying she was even being confrontational with him. We will never go back because of her!!! Beware of Lisa, the mgr!!!!!!

Food is fresh and tasty. Sometimes service is a little slow and too often they are out if key ingredients. That may be a result of trying to keep the ingredients fresh. I have tried the enchiladas, tacos, tostado, and salads. The tacos are probably my favorite so far. Love the fresh tortillas. I have also used Cafe Rio for catered dinner events. The food was delivered fresh and hot. The group really enjoyed the food. Also the ordering for catering was extremely easy.

Was passing through on a roadtrip. Between the three of us we ordered 2 enchiladas and 3 tacos, which was the perfect amount of food. My buddies liked the tacos. I stuck with the enchilada. The medium sauce was not spicy at all - not a problem. The pork enchilada was my favourite as it was slightly sweet and had a more distinct flavour than the beef one. Both were drenched in cheese! Yum! The downside was the lady making our food was a bit of a cow. She was grumbling and muttering under her breath. Wouldn't even look at us. However, the rest of the employees were friendly - offered us cups for water without us even asking. If I am ever passing through again I'd go back. Tasty enchilada, great location.

Was not impressed with the chicken burrito my first time here. Trying the tacos today. Fingers crossed! they were pretty decent. they were topped with romaine lettuce, which i just found incredibly bizarre and whole cilantro instead of chopped, also just odd (silly gringos). if you take the lettuce and whole cilantro off and just use the pico de gallo, they were pretty tasty. but upon further review, atillano's has the best tacos in town.
(2)Carrie M.
We love cafe rio! The food is great and fast! The only thing I have to complain about is they didn't keep the soda pop fountains full. And the strawberry lemonade has no flavor. We will definitely be coming back
(3)Ashley T.
Love the homemade tortillas. Rice was different since they add, I think collard/mustard greens, but it's still good. Rice and beans was tasty. I'd def come back. Oh, we got some more tortillas to go . Yeah, it was that good!

I visited Cafe Rio twice this week (January 7-8, 2013). I had a pork burrito the first night and chicken tacos the second night (Taco Tuesday). The burrito was wet and tasty but the chicken tacos were awesome. I agree with the earlier post that the hand made tortillas are excellent. They made the chicken tacos taste great. The low ratings from others strike me as nitpicking. For being so close to the Canadian border, this place does a pretty good job with Americanized Mexican food.
(4)Stef K.
Ordered a taco salad, lettuce is giant sized, had to cut up entire salad with knife, the amount of salsa and guac I received was extremely small. I realized after they did not offer cheese. The service was strange, one girl was very unfriendly, did not say a word. I feel the price is a bit too much also for this kind of food, and I wasn't impressed with the tastes. Not going again....
(2)T J.
Ditzy fake people. Food is okay though. Seemed to be behind on food prep even though the place wasn't busy.
(1)Eric H.
If you love over priced middle school food line Americanized Mexican food, this place is for you! Why not charge 10 bucks for two small enchiladas when you can get bigger and more authentic, better tasting food down the road at any real Mexican restaurant? Long lines and over priced food is all they offer here.
(2)Chris M.
Look, it's not authentic, but if you're looking for a big, wet, sloppy, eat-if-with-a-knife-and-fork kind of burrito or other Mexi food ... Appreciate it for what it is. If you want authentic, go to Atilano's on Appleway. If you can appreciate something Americanized slathered in red sauce and cheese, this is good stuff. I like it.
(4)AJ G.
Fresh and tasty. On the day I went, Coconut Shrimp Tacos were on Special. $8.95 for two large tacos, rice and beans, and a drink. I was starving and could not finish my meal. I asked for extra cilantro and got a lot. The tortillas were great as they make them fresh in front of you. The shrimp with tasty, fresh, and crunchy. After you pay, there are sauces on a rack. They had a great one from Costa Rica. For drinks they have great iced tea, but you have to try the Horchata! Its a milky sweet cinnamon drink. It was one of the best meals and values I had in a long time.

Omg.. There was an actual organ in my ten year olds taco.. She spit it out and was like what is this.. It had tubes coming out of it and ventricles all over.. When I took it to the counter the man said it was a giant artery cluster.. Waaaa:( it was absolutely the most disgusting thing ever..and it was the size of a fist..
(1)Kim M.
This place is huge in Utah. Coeur d'Alene hasn't discovered this gem yet (seeing that every time I go it's empty). Order the Barbacoa Pork Salad...you won't be disappointed. The house dressing (cilantro lime) is a must.
(5)Kasey L.
The food is pretty good, good flavor, but they are so expensive! $9.22 for a salad with chicken and rice. I got their mild green chile sauce instead of dressing and got charged $0.95 for it. Shouldn't it be a substituion?!? The food is generally always good, as well as the service, that it's unfortunate that the price is making me not want to go back.
(3)Frank C.
Slow service and the food is just slopped together quickly, even if no one is in line. 1 taco gets you 1 pico de gallo, 2 tacos gets you 1 pico de gallo, 3 tacos gets you 1 pico de gallo. Geez, after paying nearly $9 for 3 tacos, you would think enough pico de gallo for all 3 would be included. That's almost $9 with no beans or rice or drink; just tacos!
(1)Chad P.
Fun, clean atmosphere. Walk up to counter and order, then hope for a table. Really like their fresh tortillas and drink bar. The rest of the cuisine is not fantastic, but still best in town for this type of restaurant. Would be blown away by either Chipotle or Baja Fresh if they ever deign CdA worthy of their establishments. Would go back until then though. Food is very expensive for what you get, would be cheaper to go to a traditional sit down Mexican restaurant. Tip lines on the credit card receipt even though its walk up and order, I find this very offensive.

We had the "pleasure" to eat at this establishment Thursday 5/11/2012 at about 9pm. Our first impression was that the surroundings were bright and inviting, except for the extraordinarily loud music. As we tried to order it became increasingly obvious we would have to yell over the music after the person taking our order asked us to repeat ourselves three times, but we endured. When we got to the register my wife asked for nutritional info a common practice at chains, which they did not have; although I was assured the food was "good" for me. By the way the receipt had a line for a tip, not only do they have the audacity to charge 45 dollars for fast food but they want a tip for walk up service. Also the wait staff was a but short perhaps even rude; but they are new, right. So we sat down to eat our 45 dollar fast food, to find it very bland. The meat was under seasoned really overall the whole meal was kind of flavorless; the tortillas appeared homemade but were gummy and very thick. So we just decided to finish our food and listen to the music that appeared to become increasingly louder as time passed; eventually the "crew" changed the music to Bon Jovi and began screaming semi inappropriate things across the dining room. Unfortunately this was not the worst of it, eventually two of the louder of the young ladies began pushing each other in the dining room; this eventually became a full blown wrestling match in the middle of the dining room floor (rolling on the ground and all). These "employees" almost knocked my son over as he was coming out of the restroom. My wife considered talking with a manager but seriously what's the point, I assume said manager would be as inept as the crew; if there even was a manager. They have good lemonade, perhaps the "crew" was using it to mix vodka or something with; I think vodka would taste the best. Also a young lady that I am not even certain works there, as she was sitting in the dining room the entire time, went in the back and fixed her hair on the proximity of the food....YUCK! Anywho the whole experience was a kind of one strike your out type of deal. First off I can have sit down Mexican for 45 dollars and be happy with the meal, or spend a fraction of that at a truck or Qdoba; either option is far superior. Second off, I expect to not have to listen to blaring loud music as I eat my 45 dollar fast food. Thirdly, I'm not a huge wrestling fan, unless I am going to a meet. Oh ya, they have nutritional info on the website, I met my entire days worth of caloric intake in that meal; mostly in fat. They have a punch card though, I left mine there. Oh and my wife did call the manager the next day, well tried too, four times; no answer or machine. One would think they may at least have a recording containing hours and such but they don't.....I cant give zero stars UNFORTUNATLY!

Great food and friendly service. We had the nachos and pork soft tacos, amazing!
