Italian Cuisine
The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.
Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.
If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.

Great atmosphere, friendly staff and most important the food is fantastic... Always a meal here.

I am right around the 4 stars. This is not a place that you go if you want to get in and out in a hurry but that is not really a bad thing. Drinks take a while to arrive and are on the really small side but very well crafted and tasty. The pasta is great insanely fresh! My wife loved the gnocci and I thought it was quite good but the Bolognese sauce was a little bland for me. That being said I like things to be very spicy and this did not hit that level but as I said, the wife and another friend both were big fans. Our fourth friend had the surf and turf and he said it was fantastic. The atmosphere is much more casual than I thought it would be but it was still very nice. Don't go unless you plan to drop some serious coin. I have no problem paying $9.00 for a cocktail but it should be a decent size. Over all a very good experience and I would send friends there.

Took my mom here for her birthday and, yes, it was "good" but not sure I would call it true "Italian". Been to Italy many times and would consider this more of a trendy place that uses local ingredients with a nod to Italy. I do like the number of booths for 2 people and the house made pasta but it seemed odd to not hear modern Italian music in the background and see some of the antipasti and aperitivos commonly served in Italy. A tad pricey for Boise but nonetheless good.

Very average. Food was bland. I had the $20 chicken which had nicely cooked skin but was very dry, so was the rest of the very boring dish. Dry bland potatoes, limp plain steamed asparagus. Not even butter on it. Needs some fresh herbs, roasted lemons - anything!! Disappointing. My husband had the lobster ravioli & said it was equally dull & way overpriced as it was so small - esp. for $18! We shared the burrata to start which was quite nice. It could do with some arugula & perhaps some honey toasted pistachios or walnuts. Chefs - take a trip to Gjelina in LA. All in all the meal was nothing to remember. Such a shame, the decor is gorgeous & the staff were very friendly.

The service was excellent and the food was very very good. Loved the burrata, it was a perfect balance of sweet, savory, spicy and creamy. The lemon-pepper fusili was also delicious and had a generous helping of parmesan cheese on top and some delicious prawns. I loved the Black ravioli with the lemon cream sauce. So why is it 4 stars? I have to insist that modern interpretations of Italian are a great way to broaden the spectrum of the genre. It is great to see such a restaurant like this in Boise. What I can't do is put it in the same rating as a place like Asiago's that does modern Italian cuisine without trying as hard to be cutting-edge. This is of course an opinion, because both are technically variations in the same cuisine, but I just like what Asiago's is doing better.

Have been here a few times and it just doesn't disappoint. From service to atmosphere to the quality of the food you'll just be amazed. They just got a new menu and it was incredible. Enjoy.

Creative cocktails, homemade pastas, great service, wonderful beet salad, overall a very enjoyable dining experience. Order the gelato!!!!
(5)Emma M.
I've eaten here twice and had an excellent dinner and drinks each time. I enjoy a nice relaxing dinner with friends so don't go here if you want to rush in and out like you are dining at a fast food place. Sit back and enjoy their homemade pastas, breadsticks, bread, and have a cocktail or two. They have awesome desserts also. Be sure and make reservations if you are going on Friday or Saturday because it can get crowded.
(5)Heather S.
Took my parents here and they LOVED it! We split a chopped salad (amazing!) and we had two delicious entrees, of which I don't think you can go wrong with any of them. Service was spot on, drinks were yummy too. Let's just say when my parents come to town, I know where we will be eating.
(5)Kevin S.
Good food. Great service. Slightly high prices and extremely small portions. The overall ambience of the restaurant is pretty cool however if you have a larger appetite do not come here I repeat do not come here. $18 for a child's portion of pasta is a bit to much for me.
(3)Danielle C.
Excellent food and service. Our waitress was there when we needed her, but never lingered. She described the dishes well and made a great suggestion. The scallops and jumbo shrimp were cooked perfectly. The smoked salmon and cream sauce went together well. I expected the squid ink linguine to be fishy, but the food was fresh and the sauce complemented the flavors.

Twice a year, we make reservations here for a nice family meal. We've eaten through this town on every vacation and really prefer this place. Nice atmosphere. Cocktails are super on point (and the non-drinking family loves the selections for them, too), noodles are so fresh, and the appetizers are super solid. Once we had an entree that was not liked, but that's just because my little brother didn't know what squid ink tasted like, but insisted on the black pasta. Servers are always the right amount of attentive, meals are leisurely in their pacing, and the location is great. Will be back again and again.

We had friends visiting from out of town and thought it would be a good reason to give this restaurant a try. It was a Monday night and we did make reservations. Our server was very friendly and accommodating, she was also very friendly to my kids. ( which was nice because I feel like even though they are well behaved I sometimes get the "oh no kids look" at trendier restaurants). I admire the fact that they take the time to hand make all of their pasta, though they don't make their gf option ( which is a bummer), so I can't personally vouch for their pasta. But everyone else seemed to like it. I would recommend not ordering any of the stuffed pasta options, if you have a big appetite, as portion size is very small. I had the " Angel Hair" with prawns and gf penne. It came with sundried tomatoes, gorgonzola, garlic and scallions. Kind of bummed I only got four prawns. Overall it tasted very good. They give you these little crunchy breadsticks while you wait. Consensus at our table was they were too salty. It did take some time for our food to arrive, but we did have a fairly large group, so I'm sure it took some time to gather all of our orders. Atmosphere is definitely trendy, lots of cool art deco lightning. Definitely no tacky checkered tablecloths, Chianti bottles with candlesticks, or serenades to be found here ( think Lady and the Tramp). Seating is limited, so reservations are definitely highly recommended. I would say it is a toss up on whether I would return. Honestly, there is something I love about good old traditional Italian food that somehow doesn't translate exactly the same for me when it is served so simply. Don't get me wrong, the food and service are good, I think I would just need to enter without the mindset that I am there for Italian food.

Scene: Lunch. Mid-week. Empty restaurant. Empty iced tea glass. Empty belly. Empty wallet. I wanted to enjoy this place, as I work downtown so any good downtown eatery is welcomed! However, I paid $17 for a salad and iced tea at lunch. My salad was adequately sized but plain and uneventful (no clowns jumped out, no confetti or balloons, nothin'!)... it was: lettuce tossed in sauce. On the side: sliced chicken breast, sliced portabello mushroom cap. It was odd that the salad lacked anything else and was more than $10... it wasn't super satisfying. My iced tea glass stayed empty for longer than I would expect considering the mostly-empty restaurant. We were 1 of 4 tables with customers and there were only 3 of us. It wasn't like we were a party of 15 at 6pm on a Friday night. Maybe some of the more "Italian" options are better. Maybe our server was having an off-day. Maybe $17 for a small salad lunch is reasonable to some. For me, it was pretty mediocre and I doubt I'll return.
(3)Colleen G.
Great experience on Friday night. We sat at the bar and shared the burrata and halibut, both were super yummy. Good service and nice ambience. They also serve late which is rare in sleepy Boise! Get some tasty grubs and nice service here!

So I couldn't really tell you much about this place in the way that their food tastes or anything like that. What I can tell you however is that their staff, in particular the hostess, asked me the dumbest question I've ever had anyone in a restaurant ask me. After walking into this place today with my wife, the hostess proceeded to look at us like we had assholes growing out of our foreheads and asked us "can I help you with something?" All the while her body language and tone was saying "what the hell do you two want?" Not sure if we were under dressed or maybe they aren't fond of fat people in this establishment, but the comment and demeanor was so seriously off putting that I immediately walked out with my wife and refused to be seated. I gotta say that every time I walk past this place it is empty, except for the staff. I'm beginning to wonder if this is one of the reasons why. Not sure if I'll even attempt to try this place again, at least not for a while. After all, if you have to ask me what it is that I want when I'm standing in the doorway of your restaurant, then you must be one dense individual or you are purposely trying to dissuade people from patronizing your establishment. Here's a common sense clue! If I'm in your restaurant, I'm fucking hungry and I'm looking to eat your damn food. It's a pretty simple concept.
(1)Rebecca B.
Although I've never eaten here I had to write a review because on 2 separate occasions we have come in here to eat and both times have encountered such terrible customer service we left! The first time we were seated and started to ask about the menu and the waitress said it was pretty self explanatory and walked away. The second time we never made it past the hostess stand as the hostess greeted us with "yes? Can I help you?" When we told her we were here to eat she looked at us and said "oh you want to eat? let me see if we even have a table we can seat you at." Mind you this was at 4:00 in the afternoon and there was no one in the restaurant except staff. The condescension and poor attitude was enough that we left and will never go back. If I had my way I would give this place a -1 star!

My husband and I are vegetarians and came here for date night. I got the Mushroom Tagliatelle with parmesan cream sauce + cherry tomatoes + chives fresh grated parmesan-the favors were rich and the sauce was not heavy or overwhelming. The pasta was wonderful. I also got a house salad and their house dressing is TO DIE for! I am seriously salivating just thinking about it;-) My husband got the cast iron baked manicotti (vegetarian option). We were not very impressed with that dish --it lacked flavor, needed salt and the filling was underwhelming. I think the dish would probably have had better flavor with the meat but if you're going to serve the dish with a vegetarian option, taste it that way and see what else you may need to add to make up for flavors... The ambiance was nice and trendy. We would go back but would order one of the other vegetarian dishes for my husband.
(4)Becky R.
Good service. Very well versed wait staff. Interesting drinks. I appreciate the very local focus (they list farms/sources on their menu - and they are small family farms). Pasta is all fresh - with well sourced ingredients. A very thoughtful menu - lots of options (although never a fan of veal - no matter how nearby it's sourced). Seems their interesting twist on Italian is chile. My potato/leak soup was spicy. Breadsticks are spicy. They have a cocktail that seems to follow suit. For locally sourced and quality faire - the prices are higher, but *not* high.
(4)Nora B.
This is by far the best Italian in town. Don't forget to order the deconstructed bruschetta. Their beet salad is refreshing and I always order their Blood Orange Bellini. Their pasta selection dishes do change here and there, but you really can't go wrong with what you order.
(5)Ana P.
This place is hit or miss. We had a great meal a few months ago and a terrible meal this evening. The service was very slow. We were there for two hours. The food was mediocre. Should have gone to Olive Garden for half the price.
(2)Kristin S.
I had dinner here. It was good food. Pasta was fresh and the chicken was cooked just right. I also had a basil peach martini type drink which was delicious! They make great drinks! There was also a great ambiance here. I would recommend this to others who are in the area.
(4)Charlie V.
If you can beat the ambience and style of this little restaurant, please tell me. I could care less about the food......ha, I do care and I think it is very good. The first time I had nicely preared, moist, flaky Halibut and the second time I had a spice Arriabiata or something spelled like that. I really enjoyed both. tHE FOOD was all fresh...that is a bid deal to me and some places in town.....The Calamari was very. good...the dinner entrees is not huge however. If you find what you like, I had no problem I think most will enjoy this place, it is Quaint. The service I wonder. At times we did not see our waiter for a while and we stood in the doorway waiting to be seated until the bartender came to help us. Of course, we will be back and always enjoy a cold glass of Prosecco....
(4)Brian M.
Good food, but the service was slow and constantly waiting; to be seated, to get a drink and waiting for our check. Not from Boise so my expectations could be different. 25 minutes late for a Thursday night reservation and almost 2.5 hours for dinner and a drink. I get the science of keeping customers in the establishment to spend more money, but your staff has to be available to take an order. Won't be back in the future.
(2)Michael T.
We were given a GC to Alavida by a friend of ours and made it a date night. We were seriously impressed :) food was amazing, service was amazing and we loved the little book they give you at the end to write a message or draw a picture about the experience. We had the manicotti, which I thought was a little thick, but tasty. The buratta, which was amazing, and unique- I would come back for this alone. We had a perfectly cooked Veal piccata. Dessert, a layer of hot caramel over vanilla pudding, was also memorable. I like the decor, the music, the food....the service. We will be back :)
(5)Michele R.
Advertising itself as an "Italian Joint", we were surprised by the "I'm too sexy for my shirt..." decor. But it worked thanks to the juxtaposition of friendly service from staff dressed in jeans and black shirts, casually sophisticated menu and reasonable enough pricing. A very good dining experience on visit one, we are eager to go back to Alavita. I realized 24 hours before our arrival in Boise that I didn't make a reservations at Alavita and then they only had openings after 9pm. Fortunately they have some seats open for walk ins. My husband and I were able to get a table in the bar when we arrived about 5pm on Friday. The learning is remember to make reservations if you want to be sure of getting a table in the dining room. VIBE / SEATING Dining room has step up banquettes and standard height tables. Bar has high seating at the horseshoe shaped bar, banquettes and table seating. Love the open kitchen beyond and lighting above of other-wordly drum lights and crystal chandeliers. Music mix is a good one but seems set two times too loud early in the evening with few people (only six others in at 5p when we arrived) but is less overwhelming for conversation when the place is full later on. SERVICE It was top notch service, from our entry into the restaurant and through the meal, that made our Alavita experience such a great one Our server was friendly without being familiar, knew the menu well to make recommendations and timed each course perfectly to not hurry us but not make us wait either. Food arrived at the table at the right temperature which is more indication of professional coordination with the kitchen. LIBATIONS My husband ordered their special version of a Manhattan ($9). He found it a bit sweet. I had the vodka based Tart Cherry ($8), with cherry, blackberry and fresh thyme flavors which was very good, Unique single large ball of ice in it so as not to water down the drink. Well crafted wine list had several interesting whites and reds by the glass at decent prices and a good bottle list. The glass of Roero Arneis (9), one of my favorite Italian whites and seldom seen on menus, was a generous pour that came in an individual carafe with good quality stemware. MENU / FOOD ./ VALUE See photos for menu. (Some of my detail oriented Yelp friends will point out the sizeable stain on the menu In a restaurant of this caliber, this should have been tossed out. Still, it was the menu I had so it is the one photographed.) Interesting starters, pastas, salads and secondi on the front, with specialty cocktails and desserts on the back. On the table for a munchie as we perused the menu with a cocktail were housemade grissini called Angry Goldfish that are just a tad spicy and really tasty. We like to graze our way through a meal and ordered four items to share,,. ...burrata served with basil salt, crisp crostini and an apricot mostarda was remarkably good. I could happily eat only that for a meal. ($10). ...grilled apricot salad with butter lettuce, candied almonds and cheese with a blood orange vinaigrette was easily sharable. Delicious flavors but a couple of the butter lettuce leaves were coarse enough that they should not have been on the plate for a kitchen serving at this price point. ($12?) ...kabocha squash filled tortellini with an herb pesto sauce, pepitas, cherry tomatoes and a generous grating of fresh cheese had great flavor, if a modest portion, but the tortellini were significantly underdone. ($13) That should not be so at this level. ...vanilla budino with caramel sauce ($7) was one of the best we've had. One might argue whether the accompanying toffee with pretzels and chocolate drizzle served along side was too much given the amount of caramel on the budino. But one of the two pieces was unarguably too thick to eat without risking dental work and it went back to the kitchen. Lttle errors of food preparation which should not be so in a restaurant that sets itself up with this grand flourish. That may just have been our luck of the draw on this evening.. A relatively new "joint" (opened January 2013 by Fork owners) so things evolve. VALUE Dinner for two, including two cocktails, one glass of wine, one espresso and food as above was about $71 before tax. Good value. Great experience. THIS N THAT: 1) PARKING: in garage up the block or on street. At 5p on a Friday we were able to find on street parking just a block away. 2) ACCESSIBILITY: is good with level in and some standard table height seating in bar and dining room. Having spent the A.M. in an ER, on this visit I used a wheelchair to get in the door and felt equally as welcome as on a day when I might walk in. 3) OUTDOOR: sidewalk seating outside the bar windows. Windows open in nice weather.
(4)Sarah B.
Every time we go here we have the server order for us from start to finish. This is the best place to do this at, we haven't had a bad meal yet.
(5)Nicole D.
We came to Alavita with reservations which was good because the place was packed. Had a table by the window but also near the door so got a bit of the cold Boise weather throughout the meal. Luckily the food and drinks made up for the undesirable seating location. The drink menu was thorough and included beer, wine and cocktails. They have a lot of what I would consider old-school cocktails. We had the Basil Foam and a Sidecar. Our cocktails were served with pretty little ice cubes that add an extra touch. For dinner our table had the squid ink linguine and the gluten free version of the Cavatelli. Both dishes were excellent, they come in smallish bowls but it is hard to finish the dish. I was under the impression that the gluten free Cavatelli would be an actual gluten free version of the pasta dish but instead they used spaghetti noodles. Might be helpful to clarify on the menu. Overall we had a great meal and drinks and will definitely be back.

Mother's Day, 3:30 p.m. 7 of us and the restaurant was 1/3 full... so no excuse I say to the Chef. How dare you serve three main courses so gray in color I wanted to cry. No thought given to presentation on any dish served, dreary and thoroughly unappetizing. I ordered the beet salad ...what was served was an enormous, I repeat enormous bed of greens with 4 square tiny itty bitty canned beets. And the veal piccata my dog could not have chewed through.Excellent service but shame on you to the Chef only!!!
(3)Leesa H.
Really??? The only thing good about this place is a few of the chandlers they have. The food.. eh... the drinks..cheaper than most but still... MUCH better places to grab a drink l. Skip the this place and go elsewhere
(1)Andrew R.
Was quite excited to learn that this place was ran by the people who founded Fork as well. So I had to try it since Fork is amazing and tastes great. Well short story is the service was awful, our refills took forever and ever. The waiter would ask if we needed anything and we would say a refill and then they would go off go check on their other tables bring them their refills and check on them again and then bring us our refills after 15 minutes. Food took forever to cook and tasted pretty good. For how much this place costs the service can't be that bad and painfully slow. If you want a good dining experience and faster than a 3 legged turtle speed, go to Fork you will leave more satisfied and spend the same amount of money.
(2)Staci V.
Amazing deserts and salads. Great cocktails and appetizers. Perfect date night! Atmosphere casual and classy.
(5)Brian W.
This place is two for two so far in my book. Very good Italian with a great ambiance. Nice open kitchen with circular bar in the middle of the room makes it comfortable to dine solo, without feeling like a loser! The food is great. I am working on the pastas one per visit. They have a nice blend and GF too.
(4)Gwendalyn P.
The atmosphere was very elegant. The lighting was perfect. The servers were excellent with customer service. The wine was fantastic. They could use to add a few local beer choices. The entrees were mediocre. My dinner was cold when my husband's was piping hot so they do not have timing down. I could have got a better tasting dinner at Olive Garden. It was very expensive for what tasted like boxed dinner. I had the Cavatelli and my husband had the stuffed manicotti in a skillet.
(4)David C.
Progressive and contemporary Italian dishes, great taste, large portions, and incredible value. All the pastas are handmade. Calamari: Boiled, not fried. Definitely refreshing and innovative served with a vegetable ragout. Buratta with Crostini: Cheese was soft and could be sliced effortlessly by the weight of a knife. Almost had a poached egg texture. Spread across crostini made for a delicious appetizer. Parpardelle: Rich 4 meat sauce with large flat noodles. The noodles were pretty thin for a parpardelle, but were cooked to a perfect al dente. Texture was just right, and sauce was simple but perfectly seasoned. Alot of traditional Italian tastes, and very innovative takes on authentic dishes. Would definitely come back here again!
(5)Andrew H.
One of the few places in Boise I recommend to people coming from New York, LA, or Chicago. Excellent Italian. Great cocktails. Best desserts in Boise. Impeccable service.
(5)Hayley B.
We loved it! My husband had the three cheese tortellini and I had the baby lettuce salad and they were super yummy! But my favorite was the appetizer the burrata I could have had two plates of that!!! I'm a picky eater and I thought it was sooo good!! We will be back!!
(5)Steve S.
Fantastic. Food was tremendous, drinks great (and reasonable prices), delightful staff and really slick decor. Will be back!
(5)Chelsey R.
With fantastic food & unparalleled ambience (for Boise), Alavita is the classy younger sister of Fork. Their pasta is handmade in house, their deconstructed bruschetta is to die for, and the wine list fits well with the Italian fare. The menu changes a tad depending on the season, but never fails to delight. Growing in popularity, make sure to book a reservation; open seating at the bar for last minute plans. Bonus: the wallpaper is fuzzy.
(4)Jennifer F.
The food is very contemporary. I would recommend reservations on A Friday or Saturday night. We had the mushroom bruschetta, calamari and olives. We split a pasta dish with the meat on the side and I got mushrooms on the side. The wine list is fairly priced. The service was great. I would go back again. I would recommend. The Calamari was sautéed not fried and more of a flank steak calamari. The mushroom Bruschetta had portobello mushroom and tomoatos. The warmed olives and olive tapenade were perfectly seasoned. Go enjoy yourself. The place has a lively bar area but if you want a table I would either go early or get a reservation.
(5)Becca T.
Our server was extremely informative and respectful, the food was wonderful and we enjoyed the evening. ...perfect
(5)Twosox S.
Amazing experience and amazing food. Modern Italian in Boise? Wha Wha. Cannot wait to go back for some more indulgence.
(5)John L.
Great place for Italian food! The buratta is to die for! The veal is great. And the angel hair and garganelli pasta are fantastic! Expensive, but will go once a few weeks to satisfy craving for good food!
(5)Kristina R.
Had a great experience here last week. We were seated promptly at our reservation time and had a great server (Tina). Started with the clams & calamari, both were great. Had the arugula and pancetta salad which was phenomenal & huge! Split the (can't remember the name) pasta with calamari and shrimp which was delicious as well. Great service, drinks & food- you definitely have to give this place a try!
(5)Mohsin S.
Nailed it on the angel hair pasta. Been there three times now, and 2/3 times it was amazing!
(4)Patty F.
So good! Great food, great service. A little spendy for quantity of food, but affordable.
(4)Nathan R.
Great, cozy atmosphere. Excellent service. Decent food- and I don't even like Italian.
(5)Scott B.
I reviewed The Joint before and that was influenced by poor service. We visited last night and had a wonderful dinner. Claire offered us wonderful, thoughtful service and the food, as before, was delicious. There were some new pasta dishes that we enjoyed. Recommended: Brushetta, Buratta. Pappadelle, Cavatelli, Tortellini, Zucchini Soup, Vanilla Budino. (and Claire as waitress) The only thing we didn't care for was the warm spinach salad with duck.
(5)Emily S.
Good food. Small portion. Yuppy bartender didn't seem to care if I was there or not. Guess I'm not enough of a hipster. Probably won't come back.
(3)Gloria C.
Meh. Go to Asiago's for good food and generous portions. Alavita is mediocre food and small portions. Drinks were ok I guess.
(2)Bernie K.
Disappointing meal, food was OK overall nothing I would go out of the way for. Service was disappointing as they didn't even ask us what we wanted to drink.
(2)Sarah E.
Easily the best Italian food in Boise. I appreciate that they update their menu with the season and use fresh/local ingredients. Because they offer "locally inspired ingredients," there is a Pacific NW influence, which I think is only an enhancement on the Italian dishes they offer. The Butternut Squash Ravioli is the best ravioli dish that I have ever had. Ever. Do not leave without trying the Vanilla Budino. It is my favorite dessert in Boise. Great drinks, great service.

Boise restaurants have to be graded on a curve to be fair. The restaurants in Seattle, Portland, LA earn their Zagat ratings. In the 20 years we've lived here there have been perhaps 3 or 4 that could be viewed as exceptional. We had thought Alivita might join the ranks of exceptional restaurants in Boise, and they may yet, but after last nights dinner, they still have a ways to go. We have visited Alivita 3 or 4 times with similar experiences of so-so service and hit-or-miss food offerings, The decor is fabulous and has a contemporary up-scale look. We like to sit at the gray granite bar when having dinner here. We shared a Prosciutto Mozzarella salad, which was a tall mound of arugula with tiny bits of Prosciutto and very small pieces of mozzarella, Disappointing. My wife had their Affogato, which is a delicious surf and turf style risotto dish. Excellent. I opted for a manicotti because I hadn't seen it on the menu before. Very disappointing, and when I asked about it, the bartender said the chefs have been 'working on' the dish to make it less flavorless and mushy I'm guessing. Fair enough. The restaurant manager came over and apologized, saying they just haven't gotten the dish right yet. But instead of taking it off the bill he offered us gelato. Hmmm...I guess we're not in Seattle.
(3)Ashley M.
Call me crazy, but I didn't think this place was that great like many people have claimed. The ambiance of the restaurant is great. Very cool decorations and it makes you feel like, well you aren't in Idaho. The staff was great and provided a lot of useful information and made great suggestions for food and drinks. When it came to the food I wasn't that impressed. We ordered clams for an appetizer and it was ridiculous. We maybe had about 12 clams for a $12 order. A dollar for each clam, really? For dinner, my mother had ordered the Flat Iron steak. This came back raw, and I mean raw. She had asked for medium rare, but not that rare. She asked the waitress if they wouldn't mind throwing it back on the grill for a little and she took it back to the kitchen. Moments later it came back out just as raw. We decided not to complain again. We took it home and cooked it properly and were able to enjoy it there. I ordered the Angel Hair (gluten free noodles). I thought this dish was lacking flavor. The shrimp I had added were flavorless. It tasted like they had been de thawed and boiled in water. At least add a little salt, pepper and garlic for additional flavor. I ended up adding more salt and pepper to the entire dish than I would have hoped. Overall, the place has a nice atmosphere and the service is great. I wasn't extremely impressed with the food, but maybe it was an off night.
(3)Mandee R.
Have had lunch here twice now. The chicken sandwich is bland and needs something added to it. The pasta salad is boring and needs a little more pizazz. Prices are high for lunch and the meal is unmemorable. The atmosphere however is really nice but not many tables.
(2)Charles S.
When we came in we were asked if we had a reservation of course we did not. They said if we were done in about an hour they would seat us. We agreed and were seated, yay! Service was friendly and our needs were anticipated well. We had the pretzel pieces with fondue. The pretzels were good but the fondue had a bit more wine than necessary. Melting pot fondue is much better. My wife had a cheese tortellini dish that was really greasy. I had a chicken salad dish that had a bad tasting dressing. We ended up with about a $45 bill before gratuity. Atmosphere was nice . Overall we will not be going here again and will frequent our usual reliable Italian restaurant in meridian.

I don't even know where to start, and I'd rather not go on endlessly. I'll sum it up by saying we are still talking about Alavita since our dinner.....5 weeks ago. But I have to start somewhere and it may as well be with the service. Damian (sp?) was perfect. Honest, no-upselling, gave great recommendations based on what we said was our "style" or taste of food. The kitchen deserves big kudos for getting things out quickly, too! Liquor is spendy, but no more than other nicer joints. Think I paid $8 or $9 for a small potent and smooth beverage. Wasn't mind blowing, but it is what it is. Water is always free.... She is gluten-free. I can eat anything anywhere anytime. Alavita has a nice selection of hearty delicious meals. I've been to Italy several times, away from the tourist traps, and feel I know what good Italian food is. I'm not going to say Alavita is genuine or authentic. Heck, we ordered fish and dead cow. Anyway, my steak and potatoes were very good, didn't skimp on portions and had great flavor. Her fish, on the other hand, was a perfect 10 out of 10. I will definitely be ordering that next time or secretly chowing it down when she goes to the little girl's room. Whoops, looks like I'm starting to write way too much. Hmmm, I'll sum it up with "the gluten free chocolate was so good I ordered two, we're recommending Alavita to anyone looking for a night on the town and are willing to pay a little more (of all the spendier joints in Boise I felt Alavita was worth every cent), and I have reservations for a surprise Valentine's Day dinner (read: I'll be getting laid, boo-yeah!)."
(4)Eric B.
Absolutely the best dining experience ever. We had our daughter's graduation party and everyone was accommodating. It was an experience everyone will talk about for years.
(5)Brian M.
Dinner on a Tuesday night. (Sept 2013). Fantastic dinner, plate looked a little small, but I could not even finish it in the end. Extremely rich food, but delicious. Home made noodles. took a little time before the waitress came to the table. but the food made up for any delays.
(5)Rae W.
This place was recommended by one of our hotel employees. Wow! We were running late and showed up a few minutes late for our reservation but were seated right away. After reading other reviews we started with the burrata. Absolutely delicious! My husband had the agnolotti stuffed with salmon and I had the veal chop. I know many are opposed to veal, but it's one of my favorites. Both entrees were perfect. The only complaint is that the veal chop is HUGE! There was no way I could finish it. We each added a side salad and the house dressing is wonderful. Highly recommended! Great atmosphere, great service, great food!
(5)Jessica B.
My favorite restaurant. I've never had anything I wasn't in love with. My favorite appetizer is the burrata, and favorite dish is the butternut squash ravioli. I love the dimmed atmosphere, it's perfect for dates. The service is always above and beyond. The servers are eager to help and are great with explaining the menu and giving recommendations. The pricing is higher but fair. You get what you pay for!
(5)Autzen D.
I love this place. I moved to Boise from Oregon a few months ago and I was looking for a great Italian restaurant. When friends come to visit, this is the place I take them. They make their pasta in house. So good. And it's so well priced. The last time I went we had an extraordinary meal. So good!
(5)Beth C.
We had a reservation on a Saturday night and were quickly seated. Ambience: loud, tables close together, they are going for a trendy vibe. Service was rather slow. But, it was a Saturday night so somewhat understanding. We got the burrata with crostini appetizer. We were not fans. However, that was our fault... we had never had it before and tried it as an experiment. Well, now we know, we don't really like it. The drinks came, and were small for what you pay. They try to make it look larger with a huge round ice cube that fills the glass. My husband got the Torchiette. It was okay, tasted like beef stroganoff that I make at home. I got the spaghetti and paid extra for the chicken. They overcharged a dollar more than what was written on the menu (so watch your bill closely!!). The fresh parmesan and basil was a nice touch. However, the spaghetti was WAY TOO al dente. It was really chewy and off-putting. $18 (supposed to be $17) for basic spaghetti and chicken, tiny portion and chewy pasta? We won't be back. There are too many other good Italian places to try around the area.
(2)Meghan H.
Best nice Italian place in town! I has butternut squash ravioli & loved it! Beautiful restaurant inside- perfect for a night out with friends! Will definitely come back here again.
(5)Shelly K.
Whenever I'm in Boise, Alavita is a MUST! If not only for the amazing Burrata...highly recommend!
(4)Mary A.
It always takes a visit from out of town company to sample menus at new restaurants. This restaurant has been a part of the downtown for over a year, so today was the first time we gave it a try. We elected to sit outside on the patio, but the interior also looked very inviting with a simple décor, an open bar with barrel shaped lighting over it, and nicely upholstered booths. We ordered an appetizer of Grilled Broccolini which had a crispy poached egg on top---delicious with a sprinkle of chevre and balsamic glaze. For entrees, we had Pappardelle with Bolognese, Fava Bean-Ricotta Ravioli, Warm Spinach Salad, and Baby Lettuce. Everyone was happy with their choices. Would like to come back and try some dinner entrees. This is a great addition to the downtown!
(5)Josie S.
Wow, what an amazing lunch. There exists a list of the usual foodie suspects for my visits to Boise which are rarely strayed from, if ever. Alavita has managed to make its way onto the list. We shared the smoked salmon ravioli with asparagus (fresh homemade pasta is always the way to my heart) and the roast beef sandwich, thinly sliced with gorgonzola and horseradish. Add some bubbly and good strong coffee and the meal was perfect. Food was excellent (I will be attempting the ravs as soon as I get home) and the service great. The place is also beautifully decorated - there is even a chandelier hanging above the outdoor patio! A must-try in BoDo.
(4)Lynn J.
Food, as always, was outstanding. Service was exceptional. What was a little disappointing this time was that we were hustled out to make room for the next reservation. This was a business dinner, and Alavita was OUR recommendation to the client. Our tab was well over $250. Is the profit margin that tight? It was a bit embarrassing.
(3)Cory T.
Best of Boise! I have ate here several times and the service and food is solid every time. Take a trip to a true Italian culinary experience and check them out!
(5)Linzi A.
I will admit that I'm kind of an Italian food snob, so I was pretty sure they were not going to meet my expectations upon walking in there. First off, just know that you need to make a reservation -- even if it's just for lunch time dining. The restaurant is small, but I kind of liked that about it. We were still able to get seating at the bar during the lunch rush without reservations, but had I made them we could have been seated at small booth. The ambiance is modern and funky, and left me many times wondering if I was still actually dining in Boise, Idaho. It felt like a place that should be in downtown Seattle or something. We ordered the manila clam linguine and the cured meat pannini. Both had excellent flavors. The fresh pasta noodles were amazing, and even though the portion was more on the small side (more typical to what you would actually eat in Italy) it was just the right amount of food. Also, the blood orange vinaigrette that accompanied my salad was full of flavor and refreshing! The prices might seem a bit steep for a bowl of pasta, but I think the quality of the meal was well worth the price!! I honestly can't wait to go back to this place and try something else.
(5)Trent C.
Had a phenomenal meal here while in town for work. Tina was an amazing host for our party and the food was exceptional. I would recommend the turf and surf.
(5)Elise D.
I really have enjoyed this restaurant. The manager is personable and attentive, the food is excellent and the service way above average. There is usually a unique offering on the menu which appeals to me. I feel this is one of the finest restaurants in Boise.
(5)Joe R.
Hands down one of the best meals I have had in Boise. It's nice to see a trendy, upscale, big city'esque Italian restaurant hit downtown. Some things to try when you visit: - Burrata(Which I am told is flown in daily) - Crisp Prosciutto + Mozzarella Salad - Angel Hair w/Prawns - Grilled Northwest Flat Iron Steak (Non-pasta option) - Extra Virgin Olive Oil Cake Get a reservation as this place is small, as it should be!
(5)Scott T.
My wife and I had a Valentine's Day lunch at Alavita. It was her second visit and my first to this new Boise restaurant. Got a kick out of their check-in/reservation system. It used an iPad with a keyboard made out of a old modified manual typewriter. The keys on the typewriter are the keypad for the iPad. I have never seen one -- cute idea. The restaurant is open, bright, and welcoming. They have a great U-shaped bar in the center of the floor where you can sit, eat, drink, chat, etc. It would be a great place to camp out if you don't score one of their comfortable booths or tables. When the weather warms up they can open the windows on the front and will have patio seating out front. That will be fun and great people watching as well. Just need to wait for the weather to warm up. Of course what really matters is the food and we had a great meal along with a good bottle of wine. All their pasta is made fresh and perfectly cooked. I had the Garganelli which is a unique hand rolled pasta I had never had before. It is served with shortribs, arugula, and pecorino cheese. it was truly wonderful. I could have that same meal every day and not tire of it. My wife had the Angel Hair with prawns and was equally pleased. For Dolce we had some hazelnut gelato which was perfect. And, of course, don't miss on the spicy breadsticks at each table. Our service was great -- attentive but not hovering even as the lunch hour packed the place. if you have not been yet, go. It will be a great experience and a great meal. Make a reservation which can be done right off their website.
(4)Sarah C.
Ah, at last! A fine Italian restaurant in Boise! From the pre-dinner cocktails to the pecorino with truffle honey, to the Barolo braised short rib ragu, such a lovely experience. Heather, our server, was charming and accommodating, happy to help with all my gluten-free requests. The wine was served in a carafe, so that your glass could always be filled to that perfect tasting spot- just where the bowl begins to curve upward. Asagio has been blown out of the water.
(5)André C.
Good food but bartender not very happy and not friendly at all...
(2)Jennifer D.
thumbs up! moved here from San Fran, 6 months ago, and was very happy to find this place. Food, décor, wine list etc were excellent!! Thank you, Boise needs more quality places like this!!
(5)Ian T.
Alavita is one of our favorite restaurants in town. The food is amazing with service to match. The atmosphere is laid back yet elegant. The wine list is phenomenal. The surf and turf with truffle risotto is easily one of my favorite entrees in Boise. My wife loves the ravioli and we both love the cheese fondue. Only a few beers on tap but they are always great and beer isn't really the focus here. Must try the "alavita" cocktail, It is heaven in a glass.
(5)A D.
Overall a great place for a nice business meeting or a date. Ambiance and great service are their specialty, with solid food to back it up. Good: Service was really good Ambiance was really pleasant and trendy OK: The food was good, but for the price, not "oh my gosh amazing". Wife got the mini surf and turf and steak was a bit overdone. Appetizer a bit salty. At a lower price point, I would call it amazing, but for the price it was, I'd just say it was good, and what I would expect Bad: No ice in the water. I know... strange complaint, but on those hot summer evenings, room temperature water is kind of unappealing. I don't know if this was intentional to get us to buy drinks, if its somehow trying to be "cool" or "authentic" or something, but I wasn't a fan. Overall, solid choice, especially for Boise. Only a small handful of restaurants in the town at this level of service/food for those nice date-nights. Worth checking out! Tip: The gelato for desert is very inexpensive and worth getting. At $1 a scoop, you can try a few different flavors and share and still have a cheap desert.
(4)Kirsten V.
I came here on a self date, because a friend told me to eat some damn meat because I've been exhausted on my low carb b.s. They made me fall straight into a plate of their garlic mash and right off my diet :D. Words cannot express how tasty their steak + brocolini is. OMG. Expensive? I feel like I've had more expensive places in Boise.... but this was great. As far as portions go, I wasn't dying from over stuffing myself, and I cleaned up my whole plate. The waiter did a great job of pointing that out to me too, which wasn't appreciated :). This is honestly the best food I've had since I lived in California. It's old $ though, so I felt out of place, even though I dressed up. Got some asshole looks from customers, which will keep me from coming back probably. But the food is amazing. Big city high quality melt in your mouth, exploding flavors kind of worth paying for. :)
(5)Nora B.
My boyfriend surprised me for our anniversary and chose Alavita to celebrate. We had a reservation and the atmosphere is amazing. The food was beyond exceptional. I tried the blood orange drink and it was by far one of the best drinks I've had. We ordered the brushetta with pesto and garlic ricotta as an appetizer, a portobello and grilled chicken salad and then the most savory pasta dish I've ever eaten. Although I can't remember the exact name, their pasta dishes range from lightest to heaviest (richest) going from top to bottom. Well I chose the very most bottom of course. It was raviolis stuffed with smoked salmon and capers with grilled asparagus in a cream sauce. There were only 5 tortellinis but between the two of us, I only was able to eat like one and a half and my boyfriend finished the rest. It was rich, creamy and we were stuffed by the time we left. We will definitely go back again and try a different pasta !!
(5)Eric S.
I've been several times and each was great. Can't miss on the menu.
(5)Ashlen T.
First time dining here and I would come back. Came in with the boyfriend and my 11 month old in her stroller...I was very iffy about coming in with a little one but they were quick to accommodate us and pull a chair away from a table for us to sit at. I enjoyed the deconstructed bruschetta and the service was nice. I stuck with a simple tortellini for lunch but it was good. On the way out three different people thanked us for coming in, friendly hosts and servers.
(4)Soo K.
I have to give this place a 5. I'm here in Boise on business. The service, at least tonight when I went, was terrific. I called for a reservation. All tables were booked however they told me they can hold a table at the bar if I was within 5-10 min away. As promised they had a table ready for us. The food was terrific. I ordered a house salad, porcini tagliatelle and had the tiramisu. Excellent! The salad had the right balance of gorgonzola and pear. My tagliatelle was great. Didn't come with much sauce, but it didn't need it given the freshness of the pasta. The pasta was great homemade pasta but in my opinion, not amazing as I've had better homemade pasta in San Francisco. Nevertheless, it was great food. Lastly, I ordered the tiramisu. I LOVED it. Unlike other tiramisus that I've had, this wasn't drenched in rum. It had a hint of rum which was nice but the part I enjoyed the most is the lightness of the dessert. Very delicious. As for the ambiance, I liked it. It was modern, warm and eclectic. Overall, a great experience.
(5)Delta D.
Good food. Friendly service. Great Atmosphere. Make reservations.
(4)Abdulrahman A.
my experience at first was the best, there were a guy who served us perfectly with a friendly personality. I am not exaggerating if I said that we wanted to give him more than the tip that already counted. Our second experience we were served by a drunk rude female which gave us the worst experience ever. The manager also as well rude as he was accepting this behavior.
(1)Clint W.
Great italian joint emphasizing and incorporating the culture of the Italian dining; no ice in the drinking glasses (facilitates proper digestion). Pretzel fondue was delicious. The clams were tasty. Entrees we savory, full of fresh flavor, pasta was cooked to perfection and was portioned correctly. BEST TIRAMISU I have had (it is even better than my own). The atmosphere at Alavita is creative, cozy and stylish. Heather, our sever, was friendly and informative about the food and drink menu.
(5)David C.
Fantastic service, awesome food, and a great wine menu. Nice atmosphere with a very diverse choice of background music.
(5)Claude C.
While traveling through Boise we found Alavita. This place was amazing! The service was excellent. Accommodating for late night service, very friendly and knowledgable staff. Had a tasty risotto dish with grilled shrimp as well as the agnolotti dish. Both dishes were fresh while flavors melded well, rich and fulfilling.
(5)K A.
The food has been excellent every time we have gone. The Burrata is amazing as well as the surf & turf. Don't leave without trying the vanilla budino for dessert. great service and great food. Great atmosphere.
(5)L. C.
I've really enjoyed dinners and lunch at Alavita. Every dish has been creative and tasty. The service couldn't be more attentive. It's an unhurried, indulgent experience. It can be a little hard to get in, but they take reservations and I recommend it.
(5)Nicole H.
I had lunch here with my mom. The decor is fantastic, great ambiance. But I was very disappointed in my lunch. I ordered a salad that was supposed to have a bacon, dijon dressing. I asked for more thinking it would help but the dressing had absolutely no flavor. I ordered a different one that was supposed to have a citrus dressing and it was a little better but again pretty bland. I hope they step up their seasoning profile!
(3)Stephanie W.
Went there for the first time at lunch yesterday - had the apricot butter lettuce salad - delicious. Was in a group of five "foodie" gals and everyone was pleased. Pannini's were loved by everyone - burrata bread was also a hit. Our server was especially helpful in making our selections and gave great overall service. I will definitely add this place to my list of Boise favs.
