The only reason I give this 2 stars instead on none is bcs they have $1 beers on Thurs. I went there last night for cheap beers and decided to eat dinner there so as not to become too intoxicated on the uber cheap beer. I ordered a simple grilled cheese and salad. Who could fuck that up, right? This place figured it out. Instead of a hot and gooey sandwich I was served a hard, cold, crunchy nastiness that I couldn't eat. The little "salad" was an iceberg bag mix with purple cabbage and carrots--you know what I am talking about. Now, I wouldn't normally expect much from bar food except that when I was in college I worked at this restaurant in Moscow and the bar food was exceptional--the owners took great pride in their homeade fare. It was family owned and operated with recipes that resulted in fresh, hot meals that were tasty and delicous. I wonder what happened...

I have spent a couple of pleasurable evenings with the Goose. The first one was on the patio with friends. Their patio is out the back doors and has plenty of seating, umbrellas to shade you, and horseshoes to entertain you (even if you're not the one playing...trust me on this). The second evening I spent with a date, a particularly tasty porter (the beer, not..you know...an overly attractive baggage attendant), and a few heated rounds of foosball. My people...amazing. Come on a Tuesday night around 10pm and you'll have the place to yourself. You can be as competitive and utterly ridiculous as you wish. Upon foosball victory, you could even stomp your feet, hoot, and then point at your opponent across the table and shout, "In your face, Sucker!" Not that I've done that or anything. It IS divey (which is mostly why the scenario described above isn't utterly inappropriate). But, sometimes, when faced with two roads diverged in a yellow wood and down one is uptight respectability and down the other is loosy Dutch Goose diviness--a walk down the divey path can be just the thing. And, it does happen to be a dive that offers foosball, an odd assortment of video games, and horseshoes...so, there's that. And that, my friends, makes all the difference. Get to it!

*****please be aware the star values I give places are based on the category of the restaurant. This is a five-star dive!***** This is the perfect New York sandwich stop. The Phillys are phenomonal! To the low-star ratings I say those people can't be pleased and don't know anything about good'ol AMERICA! The prices here are very affordable...and no reason for wait staff to screw up your stuff as its cafeteria style ordering. The kitchen is full open; so you can watch your stuff being prepared. No one is dickin' around and they're working feverishly to get your food out to you. They call out your name (or whatever you say your name is- I might try Miss America next time for giggles!) when its ready. Sure its a little dark, a little dive-ish...but its a bar called "The Dutch Goose" for goodness sakes...its not the Palmer House of Chicago! But the food can carry this place without the booze- that says a lot. Totally recommend this place for groups...lots of seating and large tables.

Tues and thurs. are the best nights. Why? Because it's 2 for 1 burger night on Tuesday. and you can take your date there and say you'll pay for her dinner and actually not have to. It's great. Thurs. same thing only with beer for dollar beer night.

Ever been to a dive bar? Now go to the Dutch Goose in Boise! This place has everything you want and more. Quality food. Good beer. Oh, have kids? Enough room to keep them busy and entertained so they don't get under foot. (The true definition of family accessible). Have a Reuben. Try a Buffalo burger. Eat some clams. Play horseshoes, foosball.... relax! Keep coming back.

To the guy who gave the Goose a four-star rating and said there were a lot of "hipsters", I'm inclined to think he means "people needing hip replacements", or "those with broken hips", because on the Wednesday night I went, the median age appeared to be 50...and counting. Up. Not down. On my life-long quest to find the dive bar of my nightmares, we stumbled upon the Goose. A very large space with pool tables, darts and other pub games. The tables were curiously spread far apart, making us feel like an impromptu line-dancing party or a gun fight might be the norm here. There are specials here every night, and on a Wednesday night, i had the luck to participate in the Goose's two-for-one wine special. This meant that the server literally deposited almost half of a ottle of wine into my glass, making my cup runneth over. I wasn't sure if this was the actual two-for-one, or I could actually go back up and get another glass for free, but after that one glass I was unable to walk nor drink out of a glass without assistance. The steamed clams - their specialty - were a disappointment. For $13 I got one or two dozen clams - many of which had sand inside and a few which never opened. The drawn butter with garlic was a nice touch, but it wasn't extraordinary in any way. The fish and chips were also below our expectations. The chips appeared re-fried and the fish were little balls of fish without any flavor nor fish, for that matter. On their website the dish is listed at $8.75 or so but current prices are $9.50, which makes the cost of the meal comparable to a nicer restaurant. There's also no table-side service - you have to go up and order at the register, and the food's later brought to you. Even with the two-for-one wine (which gave me a hangover the next day) we won't be back anytime soon.

Can't go wrong at the Goose. Great food, awesome prices and amazing staff. They even have Keystone in cans. Tuesday's have 2 for 1 burgers. Pool tables, darts, video games and horse shoes are available and lots of seating. It's a very relaxed environment and a blast when the months get warmer!

Oh, how I love this Goose. This Goose that is Dutch. I've been on a personal mission to find the best fish and chips in Boise, as I have in every city in Southern CA. So far, I have found nothing better than the Dutch Goose. First time I came here... was when I had been in Boise maybe 2 weeks... probably less. I was at Terry's on State Street on a random Saturday afternoon, and since the BSU game was on, Happy Hour was crackin. After a few too many Cherry Bombs, I was asking my newly aquired friends where to get some delicious food. It seemed as though every person there sang in unison, "THE DUTCH GOOSE!!!" So I had to check this place out. We went up the street a little bit and found this quaint place that looks like a total dive from the outside... riiiiight up my alley. Going inside, I was shocked at how BIG this place is.. It is a "order at the counter" type of place.. and this particular visit, I was super stoked to see that they had ACE Pear Cider on tap... Much to my dismay, they were tapped out... and my heart was breaking, until the AWESOME bartender suggest a Calimocho! Oh. my. god. Way to my heart... I am such a fan of Calimochos, Tinto de Veranos... anything with red wine and soda, really. If you haven't had a Calimocho, I suggest you take your happy ass to your nearest wine bar and order one up. But I guarantee they wont be 3.25 like they are at the DG. I ordered the fish and chips, because I had heard they were quite famous. Manfriend ordered the french dip... weird... haha! The f&c is AMAZING!!!! Its enough food to feed an army.. or a drunk and hungry Kayla. I've been back probably 4 times since then, and every time... fish and chips. They have a great assortment of food, but I just can't stray from my sure thing... Plus I love fish. And chips. Best $9.00 I can spend, in my opinion. So far, all of the employees have been super rad... plus, the cook has renamed me "Pretty". God damn it, he must know I looove the compliments. Oh! and they have $1 beers on Thursday nights... its a small cover ($3 I think, and well worth it), but really, I can't think of a better time. I was a little weirded out by the crowd the first time I came here... it was chock full of BSU students, decked out in BSU gear, chanting and what not.. but Im used to it now. Its a type of place where ANYONE fits in. And really, who CAN'T appreciate that?

Don't go here for the food while it is busy. Try 11 am on a Saturday morning for an early lunch or anytime when it isn't packed for $1 beers and the food will not disappoint. Great sandwiches and great finger steaks. There is not wait staff so when they are busy it is a little tough to get a beer/incredibly tough to get food because the person pouring beer is usually the person cooking as well. Cheap beer all the time, great regulars, and a great staff. Good local joint! Plenty to do as well, horse shoe pit, video games, pool, and darts.

Something happened...I used to eat here, but quality and service is now poor. Ordered the finger steaks and fish n chips...too much batter and Super greasy. When I needed a to go box I had to wait for the bartender to finish sending text messages to get one. I thought all businesses don't allow texting in customer view. Can't see myself going back or recommending it.

Really cool bar! A little dive-y but great food and decent beer selection!

I love "the Goose" for many reasons, not the least of which is I met The Mister there, but when it comes right down to it the Goose is a total dive. It's just a dark dank could use a good scrubbing local dive bar. They've got bar food (really good greasy bar food, made right behind said bar), pool tables, video games, tons of TVs, and a great patio out back, they even have horseshoes. They also have daily food/drink specials, and all the fizzy yellow beer you could want and a nice selection of good craft beer (occasionally local stuff too). What they don't have is air-conditioning, which can really suck during the 100+ degrees days of summer here; they do have a swamp cooler which cools it down okay, but it mainly just makes things humid and really sticky feeling. They also have very minimal staff, I think at the most I've seen 3 people working at once (including the cook) and that's about it (although they did used to have a local fellow who would buss tables for free beer, but I haven't seen Iceman in a while so you're gonna have to buss yourself). This is a wait in line order at the bar and listen for your name over the crackly intercom kind of joint so do not expect anything special as far as service goes. One word of warning, the Goose now claims they are a "family establishment" they even have a kids menu *sigh*, so be forewarned that while you are throwing back a few pitchers there just might be an unsupervised tot running around picking the pool balls up off of your table while you are in the midst of a game (I've seen it happen).

Decent beer selection. Dive/sports bar type atmosphere. Lots of hipsters. Finger steaks were good. I came on a Thurs night and they have Dollar and Dollar Fifty beers for a small buy in. Great deal overall.

Tuesday is the best at the Goose. Why? 2 for 1 burgers. Take a friend and enjoy. They cook up amazing burgers. And I've not tried their finger steaks here, but if they're anything like Sully's their other restaurant - I'm sure they're amazing.

If you are expecting yups in ties and micro-brews keep movin. This is a local hangout with cheap food and cheap beer. The food is good especially considering price and the beer is served cold. They have outside dining/drinking in the back which is nice to chill during the summer. As an added bonus, they have 3 horse shoe pits in back. It's a very laid back "joint". Every now and again its nice to go to a place that doesn't require combing my hair.

I've never eaten the food here (aside from a basket of fries) but there was a span of several weeks during the summer where I went to this place every Thursday to sit in the back patio, drink $1 beers and play horseshoes. I love the crowd that goes there; everyone is completely unassuming and just there to drink cheap beer and play horseshoes as well.
