I've eaten here a few times since moving to Boise from Nevada a little over a year ago. Coming from a city where just about every sushi place was all-you-can-eat, it was a bit of a shock to have a difficult time finding AYCE in Boise. We tried a few other places besides Sushi Ya, but when the owner/manager or whoever he was recognized us when we came back only the second time after a year of living here, that got them bonus points. The price is also right. We've never had a problem with the service here. All our servers were pretty prompt and friendly. The rolls were good, but I really like to fill up on nigiri, especially salmon. Sushi Ya is perfect for nigiri lovers. I'd love the option of having a thin slice of lemon on my salmon nigiri, though. And if they'd add surf clam and quail egg shooters to their menu, they'd have a fan for life. Sushi Ya owners, if you read this, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE add quail egg shooters to your menu! I haven't had a quail egg shooter in over a year!

Dad & I love sushi, and we were excited to see that another option had opened up for us in town. We started out with the miso soup, which was OK. We ordered three rolls, scallop nigiri, and upside down shrimp. We were disappointed with the upside down shrimp. We've had them elsewhere and they just didn't taste that good. For our next order, we ordered two more rolls plus a tako (octopus) nigiri and another scallop nigiri. It was really all just OK. The service was pretty good. They had a much larger service staff than the poor individual that has to wait all the tables at IOU. We were impressed with the size of the restaurant. There was a big sushi rolling station & counter, and a lots of tables of varying sizes. The tables and chairs were all nice, heavy wood. There were some large tables, too, so it would be a good place to bring a group. The bathroom was very nice. We had an OK experience here... but for the money I'd much rather eat my all-you-can-eat sushi at YoiTomo or IOU (in that order).

This is 1 of 2 sushi places I will eat in Boise. The all you can eat is a great value. The salmon and yellow tail nigiri is excellent! It's not too much of a formal setting so it is comfortable for any time you decided to go. I would have given more stars, but our server wasn't the best. She didn't understand English very well and got confused by our questions and requests. But she was very nice and tried hard.

I'm not sure what Kevin Q and Jenn C. Experienced but you can see by all of the pics from other yelpers that there is no small portions here and I have always received out standing service. I have to think that it may be another Sushi Ya. I have tried others and they are the same but the one on Overland is 5 stars period and I go to sushi places where ever I travel

If I could leave zero stars I would! I have eaten here before and the sushi was decent, but not once but twice we came in at 8 PM with a group of roughly 12 and the employees threw sissy fits and said it's too late! I guess they don't need the business!

This is my go-to sushi place in town. I love the variety of the rolls and since it is all you can eat, you can try several of them. I like to go with a big group because there are so many rolls I love: the Hurricane, the Alaska, CK Special, Mama! Their unagi and the sauce they put on it is particularly delicious. The fish is fresh and the rolls are so tasty I usually don't even use soy sauce because they are already very flavorful. Whenever I want sushi, it is hard to go anywhere else when I KNOW that Sushi Ya is consistently excellent and a good value for the price.

Eh. Fish was decent. Some interesting rolls. Very slow service and not very friendly. 1.5 hours for 2 orders of nigiri and 3 rolls. The all-you-can-eat option might be a good deal if you have unlimited amounts of time to wait on your order.

  • Rina K.

Good spot for Sushi? Ya! Decent selection of pretty good quality fish (e.g. the nigiri). Unagi!! Best I've had in a while, which was exciting. I also felt like there is less of that fried nonsense you'll find on most sushi restaurant menus (esp. for all-you-can-eat). Some creative rolls as well. Service was a little slow during my visit, but it was worth the wait (atmosphere is nothing to worry about).

I forgot to add, I got food poisoning. I was violently ill the night/morning after I ate here for lunch. Be careful...

The service is horrible. We put in an all-you-can eat order, and when it hadn't shown up 30 minutes later we asked the wait staff if they could check on it. The waitress said there was a rush and brushed it off. Another 20 minutes later, she comes and says she dropped our paper with the order and it never got made. They were very unapologetic. Horrible, horrible service. I would recommend any other sushi restaurant.

For as much as you spend for a lunch All-You-Can-Eat price at Yoitomo ($18.99), you can get the full selection here at a Sushi Ya dinner. We've come here several times to eat, and while the rolls are delicious and there are many options, the service has always been meh. They're usually pretty good about coming around to pick up our orders for more sushi, but when they are busy the servers tend to overlook it and I have to get their attention. We constantly have to remind them to refill our drinks, even when they aren't busy. The last few times they've only refilled our drinks once during our visit, and that was only because we asked them to (and the glass is CLEARLY empty...). If there service were a little bit more on top of things, this place would definitely be getting 5 stars. Food = 5 stars. Service = 2 stars.

Have I had better sushi? Of course. Have I had better sushi for $14 that was all-you-ca-eat? Not even close. The value here is fantastic. The sushi is pretty good and the price is wonderful. I cant give it 5 because the options didn't include some standards (No spicy salmon? No yellowtail scallion?) and the spicy mayo wasnt too great. But I would go back if I was in Boise again.

  • Sandi D.

The one in Twin was my first experience with sushi, so I was really happy to have one come to Boise. Introduced my kids to it here as well, because, frankly, the price was right. Its fun to have all you can eat with my buds, but my kids only like certain rolls, and they are about $5 each, so its cheaper for us to go that route with the kids around. I liked the soup, and the tempura veggie roll is really yummy. No problems with the staff and the guy behind the sushi bar was sweet to my kids while he was rolling! :D I know I'll be back!

I was nervous to go after reading some poor reviews but me and the Wife really wanted some sushi. We did the All you can eat lunch and got there before the lunch "rush". We had great rolls and service was very good. I could see if they had a full house how service might get really poor/slow. I really hope this can be a "go to" place for Me and Family/ Friends.

When you read the reviews, there's a general consensus about this place whether the reviewer gave three, four, or five stars. So I don't really have that much to add to what's been mentioned repeatedly. Yes, it does hold high value for AYCE, especially when you compare it to the higher prices and incessant deep-fried, cream-cheese ladened, fake krab, five special-sauced offerings at AYCE Yoi Tomo. No nigiri restrictions here either, which is a major plus for me since that's all I do here: pound nigiri 'til I can't take it anymore. Yes, it's not the highest of quality, which as a purist snob means I can't elevate it above three stars. But if you just want to stuff your face and aren't worried about not getting high-quality fish, then this place offers great value for the price point. Though there are still plenty of landmines on the menu to avoid, those who are also put off by Americanized sushi tactics will still be able to find rolls with a more pure aesthetic

Well let's see...walk in the door, right away the waiter says "No more all you can eat, we are closing early." It is 9:15 PM on a Saturday, they claim to be open until 10. Ok fine, my party agreed to just order off the menu. So on top of not feeling welcomed at all, he told us we can only order once. Fine. Waters not refilled and the waiter actually comes back and says we are eating too slow. Awesome. Food's great but service is a joke. We leave a $.01 tip and when we leave, the waiter runs to an ear shoot of my party and says, "Bitch."

Bump up one more star. The quality and the selection had improved.

this place has terrible service. we were denied service twice! We called and they said as long as we get there 10 minutes before they close we were good. We got there 20 minutes till close and they said we can't serve you. Done, no more business with them

It is so nice to have a place you can have all you can eat sushi for $14. You can spend $5 more and have all you can eat sushi with some of there more expensive rolls. I just love to have that option because I like Ngiri the best and that is included with the $14 price. Restaurant has nice tables and chairs and the staff are typically friendly and provide good service. I've been here a lot of times and once in a while they get busy and the service is ok. I read a review that said the service sucked. If it happens to you go back because they typically provide good service. As for the sushi it's good for the price. The Albacore and Seared Tuna Ngiri are my favorite. Being from a coastal town there is much better sushi out there and also in Boise such as Yoi Tomo and Sakura but you will be paying more for that sushi. Out of all the sushi places in town I go here the most because I am thankful for their discounted all you can eat price. Thank you Sushiya for being different in your pricing. You have earned my business as I am sure I have made a couple of your rent payments. Enjoy this place Yelpers it's good sushi for the price. If you spend more money on the $19 dollar all you can eat the Playboy is a great roll.

Took another large party to Sushi Ya for lunch yesterday and as always everything was wonderful. Jimmy and his staff always take great care of us and everyone has a great time and always gets plenty to eat. $14 for all you can eat sushi is incredible and the quality of product is always wonderful!

My husband and I are complete sushi junkies! We had heard of Sushi Ya but never got the chance to go down to Twin to have it. We were thrilled to see they finally came to Boise. The rolls are great sized for my husband and I to share Most rolls are 8 pieces which are decent. The staff is great and soup and a cole slaw like salad comes with it. $18.95 for dinner is a total deal compared to other all you can eat sushi places in town. And you get a choice of all the rolls. At lunch for $14 you get a choice of the front side of the paper menu and the nigri. Some of my favorite rolls are Rockie Mountain, Hybrid, Godzilla and Crystal shrimp. I haven't had a bad roll there. I didnt like the sweet and sour like sauce on the Orange Julius but the chef put eel sauce on it instead and it was awesome! There upside down shrimp is a little different tasting than IOU but just as good. They have a few rolls with a fish I never had called Escolar which is really good as well. It's a white fish that isn't very fishy to me. The place is big and had nice modern decor. I think it used to be a Mexican restaurant. I highly recommend it! GO THERE NOW!

All-you-can eat sushi for a good price. Pretty good sushi being that Boise is landlocked away from fresh ocean seafood. The staff were friendly and the service was quick.

this place is great for good sushi for a good price. The all you can eat (lunch) is only $14. Love the hybrid hand roll. Fantastic.

I absolutely love this place. I enjoy eating sushi on a regular basis and have tried several places in the valley. Sushi ya tops them all for quality and price. At $18.99 for all you can eat rolls is unbeatable. If you can eat, you will get your money's worth. Service used to be awful but lately they've been better. I go to sushi ya at least once a month and eat about 6 rolls of sushi. Definitely a win for the valley in sushi! I edited my review to 4 stars instead of 5 as last time I was there the cucumber in the rolls was bitter! Still pretty good place.

We come here about once a month for all you can eat sushi. We've always had great sushi and good service. The great thing is kids are really cheap for the all you can eat sushi. The sushi has always been fresh and this is the only place I've seen escolar served. I can't recommend this place enough!

Restaurant isn't a big fancy sushi restaurant but that is some what expected when the main goal is all you can eat. From my experiences it has been clean every time. Food comes as fast as possible. On busy nights it takes a little longer than normal (10+minutes). The sushi itself is pretty good. Salad or miso soup comes with each meal. For someone who is more interested in sushi than anything else at a sushi restaurant I would recommend sushi ya. I usually would go to Fujiyama with my wife by the mall and it would cost me the same amount I pay here for all you can eat but at Fujiyama I would only get one roll per person and that is too much and I usually leave hungry. I gave it 4 stars because there was one experience where my party felt rushed to leave so they could close shop ( it wasn't supposed to be closed for another 45 minutes ).

This is an update to my review from 2012. My family and I stopped going there after my mom, who became vegetarian, had a vegetarian roll, and told the waiter that it tasted overwhelmingly like fish. Turns out, all their cooked foods are cooked in the same pans. We were more concerned for those with food allergies that could get cross-contamination from this. When we asked about it, the cook came to our table and admitted to this practice and acted like it was no big deal. We were kind of in shock. We asked if they ever wipe down the pans or rinse them and he said they clean them after they close. We decided that was our last visit.

Bam.... I'm in this joint less than a full minute and already they've managed to display one of my biggest pet peeves. They cleaned my table with a sopping wet dish towel and didn't bother to dry it. At least she had the sense to warn me that she had just mopped my table. Even after she watched me dry off a spot for my utensils with a napkin she just smiled and walked away. I can't imagine the crap that was living in that sloppy tag. Sushi Ya is located in a strip mall and, as such, lacks any real character. The place is packed with the newly trained redneck sushi types. Why? Because for less than $20 you can sidle up to the trough and choke down all the seafare you can handle. I had actually ordered off the menus and when my waitress return she took one look at my fat ass and suggested the all-you-can-stomach special. I, obliged happily. This deal comes with a nice miso soup and a coleslaw salad. Both were good. The rolls and sushi were fairly good if not predictable. There was really nothing interesting nor unique about the venue or the food. But, if you are craving sushi and want to "grub it up" there are worse places to do it. Overall, SY gave a solid effort of both service and food... Aside from mopping the table.

I'm sticking with my original advice: go on a Friday night! They are on their game, in terms of service and fish quality, which meant great things for us! We didn't wait long for any particular order an we put in 3-4 orders total, that evening. We ate like pigs and still wanted more. Again, it's AYCE sushi, so nothing is mind-blowing, in terms of quality. But we got exactly what we expected: everything was edible, at least, if not great AND we got lots of it.

    (4)
  • Jill L.

I have never, ever given anywhere less than 3 stars, but this place deserves less than a star. The food was not very good...little flavor and poor quality. We waited 45 minutes for 3 rolls with no apologies. We will never go back. All of the servers seemed like they hated there jobs!

It is unfortunate that "all you can eat" causes folks to give praise simply because large amounts of food can be consumed for a flat rate. It is also unfortunate that offering "all you can eat" seems to give a restaurant permission to provide inferior quality. Walking into sushi ya for our first time this evening was a pleasant surprise. The decor is simple but modern and clean. The staff wears all black and they all were busy working and while not overtly friendly, they were pleasant. The menu was clear, easy to understand, but they had the "rules of engagement" for selecting the all you can eat option. This puts me on the defense. It tells me you are going to try and fill me with rice with traces of fish on them to buffer the profit margins. But, remembering the reviews here on yelp, I had fair warning that the rice was an issue. After determining that all you can eat was, indeed, a financially sound prospect for me (since I really like sushi and can eat a lot with or without having a flat rate for an endless supply of food). I made my selections, my husband and children made theirs and we waited. We watched the restaurant fill up quickly. It was clearly a favorite on a Friday night. And it was clear the all you can eat was also the favorite. We had ordered tempura appetizers as well and when they arrived, while the presentation was appealing there was simply no flavor present except for a hint of oil beginning to turn. It wasn't in your face bad, just a hint of it. The dipping sauce was flavorless (we used soy sauce instead) the batter was heavy and flavorless. The shrimp and vegetables were flavorless. Our boys sashimi arrived, our daughters Barney rubble roll arrived all with lovely presentation. and my husbands and I received our salad that came with the all you can eat. It was coleslaw. When did that custom begin? Coleslaw to whet my appetite for my yellowtail? At least the coleslaw had some flavor. And I would have appreciated it and even enjoyed it had I ordered steak, or ribs. Then the all you can eat orders arrived. LOTS of rice. Massive amounts. With, you guessed it, NO flavor. And zero presentation. The fish was cut sloppily. And not created equal with the cuts of sashimi my sons had (although their cuts were oversized, yes I am an American who doesn't always want my order super sized). Even though I was famished, even though I ordered what I normally could eat on my own with normal amounts of rice with my nigiri, I couldn't finish. The flavorless, overtly sticky, massive rice I was forced to endure with each bite I took was continuing to expand in my stomach and clearly accomplished what the "rules" set out to do, curbed my appetite. We are, as a family, who drove all the way from west Nampa (because we no longer have even decent sushi let alone stellar sushi) sorely disappointed and will not be back. I will state clearly that we are not afraid of becoming sick but we cannot spend our hard to come by dollars put aside for our occasional family splurge on sushi at this restaurant. I do believe they could rise up and do their sushi better. I just wish someone would...

I love this place! It's the only sushi restaurant that I have ever liked and I've tried places in Florida, Las Vegas, etc. Yes they will get a bit upset if you waste sushi. ..so then don't waste! Love the people and the atmosphere.

    (4)
  • Chris S.

I am a sushi fanatic, but I am not a sushi snob. Sushi is an expensive "habit" and so I am more than willing to try "lesser" presentations in order to get my fix. Enter Sushi Ya. Now let's be honest, anything labeled as "all you can eat" is not going to be of the highest quality. You know that going in. That said, Sushi Ya easily meets all my expectations in terms of a low cost sushi restaurant. So why does it only get three stars in my book? Well... despite being precisely the kind of restaurant I would expect it to be, it does fall down in a couple of key respects. The first is the atmosphere of the restaurant itself. There is not a lot of care shown in the interior. I don't have a problem with "cheap" decor, but I do have a problem with poorly maintained "cheap" decor. Poor attention to the front of the house always makes me wonder what is going on the back of the house. In other words, if they can't keep the dining room looking good, what is going on in the kitchen? Now this is somewhat mitigated at a sushi bar as typically the sushi chefs work in a fairly visible environment... but a little more effort to keeping the dining room looking its best would go a long way. The other major issue I have with Sushi Ya is that they do not season their sushi rice AT ALL. It is completely bland and devoid of ANY flavor of its own. It adds nothing to the rolls and just sits in your stomach like a lump of lead............. which considering this is an "all you can eat" establishment is probably their precise intent. They want to make the rice less palatable so you will order (and therefore eat) less. Properly seasoned rice is a vital component of any sushi dish no matter how much you are paying for it, and to overlook such a simple thing is almost inexcuseable. But again, penny pinching is the order of the day.... not that salt and vinegar are that expensive. That all having been said, I have found the "best" way to get your money's worth at Sushi Ya. First... order nigiri. They are one of the few places I've found to offer nigiri as part of an "all you can eat" and nigiri is simple to dress up on your own with a dab of wasabi and soy sauce. I could eat my weight in salmon nigiri alone. The second trick is to order rolls that are either fried or come with some sort of sauce (or both.) I know this might offend a lot of sushi purists, but remember where you are. A little sauce goes a long way to making the unseasoned rice edible. Follow those two "rules" and you will easily get your money's worth here. So overall Sushi Ya is exactly what you expect it to be... a large amount of lower quality sushi for a decent price. If a higher quality sushi bar isn't in the budget, this place will fit the bill and you will generally leave feeling satisfied.

We always receive excellent service when we visit. The rolls are good, but not the best I've ever had. The price is fair for the all you can eat. We will keep going here as they have beaten out some of their competitors simply by having awesome staff.

  • TheStranger 2.

Four and a half stars really. As stated in my review for other all-you-can-eat sushi restaurant, Sushi Ya is not for the sushi snob. The food is very-very good, but not outstanding. But that is a gimme, in the all-you-can-eat sushi game. The service is excellent. The atmosphere is comfortable and clean. But the real stand out here is the price point. A full $5.00 less per person for the unlimited sushi rolls and nigiri sushi. Plus you do not have to sit at the counter for outstanding service. This IS the place to go in the Treasure Valley for the major sushi munch.

They have a couple inspiring rolls like the Rocky mountain, but most are pedestrian and too reliant on sauces. You're definitely not going to write home about how this place gives Sukiyabashi Jiro a run for his money. What makes this place a four star place for me is their above average nigiri selection, consistently quick and decent service, and most importantly, games-free all you can eat. You're not going to get the age old trick of stuffing massive scoops of rice under a paper thin slice of fish type deal here. Mysterious missing rolls from your clearly marked order sheet? Never. Not even the early check instead of a second order sheet trick. In fact, the one time I actually made it passed 2 rounds, I about barfed some raw fish when they gave me another order sheet to order another. If I had to nitpick, I guess a good classic spider roll, dynamite roll, dragon roll and a more loaded shrimp tempura roll would be nice. But hey, the fish has always been fresh, the price is really just right, and all in all, I leave satisfied all the time. Good job.

We have gone for sushi all over the valley and we always come back to Sushi Ya for the price to quality ratio. It is definitely not the highest quality sushi we have had but you can't beat the AYCE dinner sushi for $18.95. We have come here alone and with groups, have sat at the bar and at the tables. The service has increased and improved over the last couple of years. There is a plethora of nigiri and rolls to choose from including a handful of tempura fried ones. The Miso soup has a nice smoky flavor that I love, I only wish they had cubed tofu in it that I also love. Some rolls definitely worth trying: Idaho, Alaska, Hula (slightly sweet), Caterpillar, Mama, Mountain, and for tempura fried try the Las Vegas and King Kong. It is a fun place to come with a group so you can order all sorts of rolls and find your favorites. Whenever we leave a sushi restaurant in the valley with a bill of $50-$100 we always agree it was not worth it, and that is why Sushi Ya is our go-to sushi place!

For $20 you can't beat the all you can eat sushi. The sushi is not the best, but is by far very good for an all you can eat sushi place. Highly recommended trying the mountain roll.

If you want great service, don't go here! The employees seem less than enthused to be here. However, the sushi is good and the fish always tastes fresh and they have quite a variety of rolls. My favorites are the Rocky Mountain and Orange Julius rolls. All you can eat for lunch is $16.99 and only $2 more for dinner with a larger selection of rolls to choose from. Can't beat that! However, you have to eat all of what you order or they will call you on it and charge more. I was with a group once and we assured them we would finish it all so they would bring the bill, but we ended up paying and running because we just couldn't force it down!

I'm a huge fan of all-you-can-eat sushi, but dropping $19-$25 per visit makes it a big treat for this semi-unemployed recent college grad. I was thrilled to hear that the AYCE at Sushi Ya was just $14. The $14 lunch special comes with your choice of miso OR salad (I tried to order both--oops). The miso was fine, as expected. I was there with 4 friends and we started off ordering 5 or 6 rolls for us all to share. The rolls were delicious, and though AYCE only allows you to order off menus A and B, there is still a nice variety of rolls, and several rolls that are NOT the standard deep-fried-with-cream-cheese that so many places rely on to fill customers up. The food didn't blow my mind, but it was a nice meal that tasted good and was affordable. Their salmon nigiri is particularly nice, with a great texture considering we're in Idaho. My favorite roll was the Godzilla roll. The staff was friendly and helpful. In fact, they almost seemed too eager considering how empty the place was (Monday noontime). I appreciate the enthusiasm, though. I figure that eating mostly AYCE sushi removes me from the sushi connoisseur crowd, but I don't care. I love sushi and Sushi Ya gave me my weekly fix. Will definitely go again and recommend to friends.

Not a bad sushi place but definitely not the best either. I got the all you can eat lunch deal and was satisfied with what I got. The service was good and quick, the place seemed clean overall. My favorite rolls are the crystal shrimp and hula rolls. I would come back when in need for a quick sushi lunch.

I have never, ever given anywhere less than 3 stars, but this place deserves less than a star. The food was not very good...little flavor and poor quality. We waited 45 minutes for 3 rolls with no apologies. We will never go back. All of the servers seemed like they hated there jobs!

  • Mike C.

For $20 you can't beat the all you can eat sushi. The sushi is not the best, but is by far very good for an all you can eat sushi place. Highly recommended trying the mountain roll.

  • Jennifer W.

  • Hai T.

  • Jenn C.

  • Steve I.

We leave a $.01 tip and when we leave, the waiter runs to an ear shoot of my party and says, "Bitch."

this place has terrible service. we were denied service twice!
