BOISE: Was excited to go to Raw today for lunch. Ambience (2 stars): It is fine here; nothing special, pretty basic booths and probably a little too much on the boring side. Service (3 stars): Service was slow but friendly. They offered to refill my glass at the end of the meal right before tip. They were nice though. Food: I can only comment on what I experienced. Rattlesnake Roll: (4 stars). This was a solidly executed roll. The rice was moist yet firm and stuck together nicely. The sauces on it were mildly complex, a little spicy with the aoli and a little sweet with the eel, and the meat was good, even a little tempura thrown in their for the Americans. Its a nice presentation (see photo) The price was too high for the roll ($15ish), but it was good food and I would order it again. Salmon Run: This was a good looking salad that three in our group ordered, who had been here often. I didn't taste it, so I can't provide a rating, but everyone seemed to enjoy it and it looked good. Take their word for it if you like. Sorry I can't help with more menu items! Summary: a little lacking on ambience and service, but a good roll to be found (and in Boise) if you've got a mid-teens budget.

Another overpriced and overrated sushi place in boise! Very fishy and poor service. Nice decor but that's about it.
(2)Mike C.
Bento box was good nothing special. Quality and amount of the food for the price was not worth it.

Friend and I went for the sushi making class on December 20th. I've been there before for their sushi making class but it was another gentleman leading it and I had no issues. This time, I noticed a few unsanitary practices such as dispensing of the avocado pit in the trash by banging the knife onto the actual trash can. Additionally, their rice containers everyone was using looked unsanitary, and all the raw fish was touching. Both of us became extremely ill almost 24 hours later and it was the only meal we shared. We haven't left our bathrooms for the last 10+ hours and I've become severely dehydrated. I paid $80+ to be sick for two days. Never going back, that's for sure. If anyone else experienced food poisoning, make sure to call the Environmental Health Section at Central District Health Department at 208.375.5211.

For sushi in Boise (land-locked area), this place is alright. We tend to visit this place more often than not because the quality is better than most. The only downside to Raw is the prices are OUTRAGOUS!!! We ordered 4 rolls and it cost $50+. There are other options in Boise but if you end up here, you won't be disappointed.

As I sat looking over the high prices in the menu while the waitress ignored me I seriously considered getting up and leaving. I wish I had. The fish was okay, nothing special. Tempura was soggy like it sat for a while. Service was nonexistent. The tastiest part of my meal was the seaweed salad. People at the table behind me were ordering hamburgers-- that should have been a sign. TO LEAVE.

Definitely deserve more than 3 stars... this place had great sushi. The wine is marked up a little too much but they have a good selection. Did I mention they have great sushi. Friendly staff.
(4)Cindy V.
I like this place, have been there twice. They have a great variety of rolls with lots of different and unique flavors. My only complaint would be that the rolls aren't rolled as tightly as I'm used to (or I like) so they did fall apart a bit when dipping in soy sauce or moving around my plate. Overall, good variety, good quality and good prices.

I travel a lot and often look for sushi restaurants. Using other ratings on Yelp I decided to try. Very pleasant experience with very good sushi. Sushi was fresh, the restaurant was clean and the staff was very pleasant. Would have liked the sushi to have more fish on it...but it was good.

I'm far from a sushi snob, but I have had enough sushi to declare this is very good at least. By far my favorite sushi place out of the 20 or so i have visited. I love RAW!

I've been here once and I won't be back. A friend and I stopped by for lunch one afternoon, and as I wasn't feeling particularly hungry so I just ordered avocado maki. It inexplicably came out as a fried roll, which was greasy and honestly just gross. I left over half of it on my plate, and when the server came out she asked if I was done rather than attempting to correct the problem. Then she went ahead and brought out the bill where I saw that my 2 pieces (3 if you count the one my friend tried before agreeing it was terrible) of avocado maki cost me $8. To be fair, my friend said her roll was "ok".

The Sushi was great! The service was the worst I've ever had. We sat down and waited 10 minutes to get water when there were only 2 tables of 3 people in the restaurant. When we asked can we please get some water the server said "that's what I'm doing". When I asked for a recommendation from my server for a sushi roll that had a few things I enjoy in it she replied "there are a lot of rolls" and then just looked at me. When I asked for the spicy mayo I requested in my initial order that was not brought to the table with the food she turned around and said "yeah that's what I'm doing". After this enjoyable experience my 2 colleagues and asked for her to please split the check once and she just looked at us and said "okay" completely annoyed. I will probably never go back because the service. Some the most unprofessional, rude service I've ever had.

This place is amazing. I am from NYC and I can say that this is the best sushi I have ever had in the lower 48. It is as good as the best I ever had and that was in Anchorage Alaska.
(5)Sarah B.
I order one thing from Them every time, the Rattlesnake, roll so I don't know if they make anything else?! The two restaurant thing, you guys have to get it together! When you walk in, you have to go to the "right side" because the hostess can't be bothered to seat you. It's really lame, good luck if there is a waiting list. prices are high service can be slow, hostesses (blah, some of the worst in town) but I have to have that roll!! It's like sushi heroin!
(4)Cory P.
I'm by no means a sushi aficionado, and I definitely don't care about what a lot of people have listed in their reviews. I don't judge a restaurant by the color of the skin of the employees, and I think it's ridiculous that you would let that bias you before you even try their food. My experience the couple of times I have been there has been favorable. We had a large group of 10 on one trip, and I was able to try many of their rolls that day, and I was very impressed. The fish is extremely fresh, and I didn't care if the person rolling it was Asian or not. They were great sushi rolls and I would definitely go back. As far as price, it didn't really seem that much more expensive then other sushi restaurants in town. To me all sushi is a little expensive, but you have to pay to have fresh fish delivered every day.
(4)Karma L.
The best sushi joint in Boise! Superb quality, talented chefs...what's not to love?!
(5)Shanna T.
OK, maybe you categorize this as fusion sushi, but I totally heart it. Love love love the rattlesnake and many of the other rolls on the menu. Plus, the staff is almost always wonderful. The other thing that I totally love is that it's one of the few "sushi and something" places I can take my 5 year old and know that he won't be disappointed either... with their neighboring restaurant, Willowcreek, there's something for everyone.
(5)Damon A.
Absolutely amazing rolls. Great staff always make me feel welcome and the sushi is among the very best in the valley. A must try for any sushi lover!
(5)B M.
We just moved back to Boise from Arizona. A friend turned me onto sushi there but my husband was not a fan. We drove past RAW and decided to give it a try because Willowcreek was connected and had food for my husband (plus their menu looked flipping yummy too. I'll review it next) I'm definitely not a sushi connoisseur. I just like what tastes good. Their sushi was the best I've ever had. I loved their menu described what the sauces were. I read them to my husband and he decided to give a roll a try with the Fuji Sauce on the side. He wanted a simple fresh roll, so I got him the Sake roll. He loved it! He even said, "what crap did you feed me before?" So now he likes sushi. (Of course if you're a sushi connoisseur that tells you my level of expertise in this field. So take this rating as is or leave it ;) ) I ordered take out. They were made fast. Will come back again.
(5)Nick T.
Overall the sushi was acceptable, I found the experience to be middle-of-the-road. The crab in the California roll did not taste fresh at all, my kid is not a picky sushi eater but she wouldn't eat it because the crab had a weird texture and flavor. The spicy tuna was probably the worst I have ever had, it was pretty much all cucumber and the tuna was all but missing. The spider roll was good but the crab was very dry and flavorless. The highlight of the meal was the tempura veggies in the appetizer. Overall the dynamite roll was swimming in spicy mayonnaise, it was applied excessively.

Sat in the willow creek side because the sushi side was reserved for two hours before my party of 2 showed up. My party was followed in by a party of 4. Not only did they seat the larger party in front of us after they split the tables but they sat my party half way in the entranceway behind the hostess desk. Leaving me in the walkway. I've never been treated like such a burden walking into a restaurant before. Happy new year....
(2)Malia D.
I don't care if the sushi isn't authentic I don't care if I've never seen a single Asian at this place I don't care if maybe they charge a little more than the average sushi place I'm a fan of Raw and I don't care who knows. The fish here is fresh and the rolls they have on their menu are unique and fun. This isnt the home of sushi purists, but if you're perfectly OK with that (which I totally am) Raw is a hip little place offering some fun takes on raw fish. Try it. Love it. I do.
(4)Jessica T.
First, I should probably admit that I'm fairly picky about sushi. I've lived in Tokyo so I tend to be a bit of a purest--I don't really like any of that fusion sushi that is so easy to find in Boise. That said, they do serve a lot of fusion sushi here. However, there are definitely things on the menu for purests like myself. After listening to many people say Blah Blah sushi is the best place in Boise, only to try it myself and totally DISAGREE, I've decided (at least in my own opinion) that Raw serves the best sushi in town. They have very fresh fish and their rice isn't super vinegary like other places here that I've eaten. Their "raw deal" seems to be the way to go because the specialty rolls they make, while expensive, are pretty tasty. Negatives: -rolls are on the spendy side -service isn't that great. We eat here regularly and the waitress (virtually always the same person) doesn't even seem to recognize us. -awkward atmosphere--feels very casual. There are always kids in the restaurant. They would have done better making this feel more like an upscale sushi experience. I think I would ordinarily give them 3 stars, but the quality of their fish makes up for the shortcomings. Update (downgrading from 4 to 3 stars): In a strange turn of events, I ended up at Raw last night right after I wrote my initial review. We were there with a group of 12 or so. Although we had a reservation, it was made the same day so they didn't really have a chance to prepare for us. They tend to do horribly with big groups. There were so many mistakes with people's orders I can't even list them. They told us one couple we were with they were giving them a bottle of sake for free to make up for it, and then charged them for it anyway (and it wasn't even the correct price for the sake they ordered). If you are going to Raw with a group, make a reservation a few days ahead so they have enough servers and won't run out of foods (common problem at Raw).

I have ate here for a number of years and recently became very ill for a sushi roll. I was with three other friends and they became ill as well.

"BLAH RAW" C'mon, If we were rating an Amerasian sushi feng-shui contest then I'd hand out the stars like half of the people on here. This is what I rate a sushi bar on: 1. service - which should be hospitable, friendly: food took 70 mins to come out with only 5 tables being served, waitress jib-jabbed with friends and I literally felt like I had to set myself on fire to get a refill on water. 2. Sashimi - The temperature, thickness, firm-ness, & flavor. If you can't get this right I'm not going to waste my time with high expectations for a roll. 3. Authenticity - There's a fine line about catering to a customers needs and diluting the entire cultural experience... Good Job Raw you're entire experience was AT BEST luke warm. SUMMARY:Overpriced, SLOW serving (there was no service, just the delivering of our food), Diluted authenticity, Mediocre food. Age Dashi- Very bland fried tofu - needed spice or... SOMETHING Calamari - Tasted very "freezer to fryer" - wasabi mayo tasted like lard. Rattlesnake roll - The better of the rolls we ordered. Not worth the price The Raw Roll - Skimpy on sauce and the rice they use isn't "sticky rice" - it's like a drier jasmine?! Over the Rainbow - Looked neat - tasted Blah Ton Ton Roll - I really loved the scallop however, the tuna tobiko looked like the fatty leftover tuna bits. Sashimi Sample Platter - 6 out of 10.

Disclaimer: I don't care about the ethnic purity of sushi. I'm just not that smart. Whew! Now that I've got that off my chest, I'd have to say that if you're getting Sushi in Boise this is a pretty good spot to get it! The pricing, as others have said kinda sucks. It's spendy, but in the defense of Raw, you do get bigger portions than a lot of Sushi spots I've been to. I had the Rattlesnake roll, California and Big Island Rolls there today, and they were all very good. Fresh ingredients and excellent flavor. It may be dumbed down ethnic food, but I frankly don't know the smarted-up Sushi, so can't judge it based on that. If you want a good sushi roll though, and don't mind the price, Raw is pretty tasty. Would've been 4 stars except the prices are too high for a low-brow guy like me.
(3)Mazal S.
Mediocre for the price. I think I counted 6 people behind the counter busy making food while the placed had a total 4 people eating. Service was still slow (4 people. really!!!) and the sushi was just OK. Won't come back. Sorry. Better ones out there (aka Yoitomo/ Mai Thai...)

Our family loves Raw. Good service, nice atmosphere, relaxed feeling; there's always good music on. The Samurai Roll and Spidey's Wild Ride are two of our favorites. We like to get The Boat, which is a combination of choices off of the menu. If someone in your party doesn't like sushi, they can order off the Willowcreek menu.

blehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.urp.gag.urp.i am the prod mama of a newborn girl, and so it's been very hard to get out.if you are a new parent, you know what I mean, so I decided to spoil us with takeout sushi.Went here cuz it was close. BIG. Mistake.Got home and realized they forgot a roll, the roll that we did get was barely edible, the calimari tasted like stale dog shit, and I specifically told them NOT to put pineapple in my poki, and they did, and it was in such small pieces that I couldn't pick it out, and made my poki taste like shit. I thought...well... at least I have the miso... they even managed to fuck up the miso. How do you screw up SOUP?! I am not even talented enough to do that! I cook like shit! I'm pissed because we spent 50 fucking dollars for a meal we had to throw away. Thanks for pissing away my money and time away from my infant.

Never expected to find a great place for sushi in Boise. Price for the rolls is a little pricey but they are good. Specialty seems to be their rattlesnake roll and it was excellent.
(5)danger m.
i agree with the others that this place is pricey. (~12 dollar per roll, 2 rolls will leave you full though). the rolls are pretty awesome. I am not japanese, and therefore I cant comment on the authenticity, but i really like the taste anyways. My party ordered a combined 6 rolls, and all were awesome: -the fish was very fresh (this is probably the most important) -the rolls were well made and individually, the sushi were the right size. places that have sushi that is too large or too small really irk me. -the rolls are all individually larger than what you would typically expect, possible 1 or 2 additional sushi pieces. -two rolls easily filled me up, and i am not a skinny dude. I would go back, and would recommend this place to anyone, but be prepared drop $30 for the meal.
(4)Brian H.
Hard to top Tim's comments about the place, as I share the same mindset with him (although I think five years of apprenticing only entitles the prepping of fish but not the actual cutting). Authenticity and not dumbing down the food or menu to cater to the customer (a real problem with ethnic food in Boise) are important to me. So I get uneasy anytime I see an Asian restaurant run solely or predominantly by lily-white folk. The uneasiness is usually well-founded (helllooooo Yen Ching!). Group birthday dinners have led me to Raw twice now, and I'd have to say that Raw doesn't really buck the trend much either. But Raw had one thing going for it on both occasions: the fish was some of the freshest I've had in Boise. What was done to the fish in the maki rolls is a different story. The rolls there are some of the more ridiculous that I've come across. After glancing through the options, I wondered if the purpose of the rolls was for the fish to accentuate the toppings and not the other way around. I opted for one of the safer rolls featuring unagi (eel) and was disappointed in the amount put in there. Sashimi is the way to go here. One trip yielded really thick cuts while the other yielded thin ones, which leads to possible consistency issues with the itamaes. While it has less value, the thin ones were cut better. The fried calamari didn't have much taste to it. The seaweed salad was alright, and the miso soup was surprisingly strong and had some kick to it. Service was lacking but good quality when we actually got it. The pricing here sucks. Standard maki rolls like California and spider rolls all run $9.50. $9.50 for a California roll is ridiculous. All nigiri pairs run $5, a dollar more than average. The fancy rolls are $11 minimum, with most being in the $12-$14 range. They don't seem to carry any seasonal or special fish outside of what's on the menu. Borderline two/three stars, but I'll give three given my fish quality. But you are paying extra for it here whether your fish ends up being fresh or not.

I have to agree with a lot of the negative reviews I've read here on Yelp. My wife and I decided to go out to a nice dinner this past Saturday night and we were in the mood for some good Sushi. The service was mediocre, our waters were more empty then full most of the time. The place was pretty dead for a Saturday night too, maybe 4 tables in the whole joint. We've been here several times and the food is never consistent. We ordered the Seaweed Salad, Miso Soup, Hamachi Nigiri, and 2 Japanese Burrito rolls. the Seaweed Salad and Hamachi were pretty good but the rice on our $14 per roles was well undercooked, in fact, it was chewy. The waitress had looked at our rolls and commented: "So you like to pick at the good stuff, eh?" We responded: "No the rice is undercooked and hardly edible". She said she would let the cooks know and thanked us for our comment while she still graciously charged us full price for the $14 rolls. LOL. This place is way over priced, way over priced. This will be our last visit after dropping $80 on mediocracy. Do not go here, you will regret it. This was our last and final visit.
(2)K. F.
Not fantastic, but we enjoyed it more than some others in Boise. They have an interesting selection, but the fish wasn't very good in any of them, and it was rather expensive. Glad we tried it once, but since there are places with better sushi, we'll probably frequent them instead of Raw.
(2)Tara E.
Raws fish is very fresh. They put some new spins on standard sushi rolls. For those of you who dont like sushi you can order from the willow creek menu! A great lunch place!
(4)Tim M.
This place is the second half of a dual restaurant, the other half being Willowcreek Grill. I think they are attempting to ride the wave of sushi popularity and cash in. It wouldn't be the first restaurant that thought, "Hey, I can give the customers a sliver of fish and charge $5.00 and make a mint!" The decor is nice and new which is great, but is an American's view of "asian", having essentially no Japanese elements or authenticity. There is nary an asian person in sight. All the "sushi chefs" (My fingers can hardly type the word) are young white-boys. I would bet $1000 they never apprenticed for 5 years like a real chef would. We got the usual choice of standard sushi, bluefin tuna, yellowtail, unagi, saba. The pieces were OK sized, not that big and tasted fine, though not superior. The service was sproradic, I had to stand up, walk over to the spaced-out waitress and hand her my wife's bone-dry cup to get a refill of tea. That is the other huge insult, they charge for tea. If the owner has any clue about Japanese restaurants (or Chinese for that matter), he should know that tea is free and they should be jonny-on-the-spot with refills. You and I both know the bulk giant pot of tea costs you nothing, but I know you want to cash in and charge $1,99 for a small cup of watery tea, then have the customer beg for refills. In the end, this is just a strip mall white-bread sushi fad restaurant with OK sushi and premium prices.
