We order a combo of this and of that. There was a lot of food on the table. And, we all tried a little of this and that. No one ordered crab though. Hmmm. There was a fisherman's platter and lots of shrimp. Everything was pretty good. Love the kitschy decor, from the sharks, fish, turtles hanging from the ceiling to the Corona bottle salt/pepper shakers on the tables and the metal buckets carved into the tables for shells. Also gotta love the Joe's merchandise for sale including the "Bite Me (w/crab picture)" t shirts. Ha-ha. Always noticed that it can get loud in here, sometimes straining to talk or hear dinner conversation (they do play music in the background here which can be loud), but overall always enjoyable. It's a fun restaurant, good for groups and families. One last thing - I appreciate that each time we've been here, we're never rushed to finish our meals...even on this night when they literally had a line going out the door and we had a big group. So kudos for that. Overall, it's a bit expensive for a lot of fried food, but when hunger strikes and you need a place that everyone can agree on...Joe's worked. Add a lot of noise and a lot of kids and you've got a place to bring the family.

Food was really good. One should come here for crab and atmosphere. If you come for something different prob be disappointed.

Love the food and never disappointed for a chain sea food restaurant! It's definitely not fresh off the coast but the food is always good, portions are decent sized and the service is excellent!

Surprisingly good for a chain. I would definitely go back. Fun, tasty food, pretty spot, cold beer, good drinks. Warning: I ordered the the crawfish boil and it was too spicy for my taste (and I like hot food!). Great wait staff and manager took care of it. Kudos.

The food is not bad, I mean it's crab after all, which is awesome. One major complaint for tonight's visit, seating. We arrived, asked for a table outside in the shade and we were told that they didn't have any available. 90 very hot minutes went by wherein we saw three other couples ask to be moved and accommodated. The entire time we sat across from one very shaded, very unoccupied table. Bad job Joe.

Have never had an issue with this Joe's. The prices are a bit expensive so we don't eat here very often. Had a super-difficult time finding anything about Joe's happy hour in Boise which sucks. Joe's happy hour drink specials aren't very special but its very hard to beat half price appetizers. We'll be back for happy hour for sure! The only down side for some reason beyond me, the smell when you walk in is overwhelming. It smells like three day old fish in a fish market at the end of the pier that no one wants to buy fish from. I'd recommend hanging and air freshener or 12 to help out.

So the service is so so, I was very disappointed when the sampler appetizer came out. The chips were stale, the calamari tasted like mostly fried batter, the "great balls of fire" were just a knockoff of jalapeño poppers. A bad version of them. My dog sat on the patio with us and he didn't even want to eat the food scraps we were giving him, lol. The prices are outrageous for the tiny little crab legs I got.

I have a love hate relationship with Joe's. On one hand, I like that you can find southern dishes like hushpuppies and crawfish that are a rare find here in Boise. The location by the river is relaxing and the decor inside is pleasantly campy. Also, I do love the peel & eat shrimp and their bloody marys are pretty good, (plus you get to keep the cute mason jar its served to you in!) On the flip side, I've received less than stellar service on at least one occasion, and I do think the prices are too high for what you get. The steam pots from joes are typically skimpy on seafood and heavy on cheap filler items like corn and potatoes. I'd say unless you are really craving southern style seafood and willing to pay big for it, just skip Joe's.

Great service and great food. Perfect outdoor seating with a great view of the river.

Crab stuffed mushroom caps were filled with baby shrimp instead. Fish and chips - fish was dry/chewy but clearly not fresh. Also had crab dip which was heavy on cheese sauce and light in crab! And the lobster bisque was well, pretty bad, in fact the worst I can remember. Perhaps the crab itself is good, but tough to mess up boiling water.

Food is decent. Ate at Joes a few nights ago, took the server 9 minutes to greet us, had to go to the front you ask if we had a server. Service was average after that. Took 22 minutes to receive bill, again had to go to front to ask for the bill. Unfortunately that wasn't the first time service was like that at Joes. Management didn't bother to come check on us after knowing the service we had received, 2 stars because the food wasn't half bad

First time at JCS. I was happy with the food and service. Andrew was excellent especially for only being there a couple months, very professional and super nice, especially for being way busy. It was a bit pricey but we did have crab lol. Definitely recommend.

Went there for dinner on a Tuesday. No one was there which should have been the first clue. The wine list is virtually non existent but the service was actually very good and Maddie did an excellent job. Food was marginal and actually got an upset stomach from it. Ordered the Mahi Fish Tacos. If it were not for Maddie would give it one star.

Joe's Crab Shack was very active and crowded which is a good thing for a seafood restaurant in the middle of a land locked state. The service was excellent, but the crab portions were quite small, thus the three stars. I thought, going to a crab shack that there would be mountains of crab.

  • David W.

Had early dinner there today, great old building on the river, nice personel, food was close to poor.......fish and chips was way over breaded and greasy, very little fish left when the coating came off...........we should have gone to McGraths.

  • Rach G.

Just okay. It seems that the crab is all they know how to do as myself and others have tried other menu items just to be disappointed every time. The only decent appetizer is mozzarella sticks. The crab cakes are bland but somehow still overly black peppered flavored. I guess the French fries are the best non-crab food item they have.

I was terribly disappointed! I went to Joe's at a friend's recommendation, who said she always goes there for her birthday. That made it sound like a very special place. I arrived ravenous, and I was really looking forward to the meal. I ordered the "Bucket of Crab" which is advertised as 11/4 lbs. of crab. The crab seemed less than fresh, tasteless and rather puny, (certainly not 11/4 lbs.). The potatoes with it were nothing more than unremarkable boiled potatoes which granted, were not advertised as anything other than that, but they were only slightly warm. The corn served with the "Bucket of Crab" tasted like old field corn and in my opinion, was inedible unless a person were truly starving. I was so hungry, and since I didn't want to eat the corn, I was left with potatoes and the little bit of crab that I could glean from cracking the puny crab in my "bucket". I kept thinking "$25.49 should buy me a lot more than this!" The combination of crab and potatoes were not filling me up, plus it seemed it was taking forever to crack this crab, so I ordered a side of French bread to go with the meal just to get full. I was thinking at the time, they should at least include bread, as much as they charge for this mediocre meal! I will never go back. There is nothing I saw or tasted to recommend this restaurant and when you factor in the high prices, I am mystified why my friend goes here every year for her birthday.

I have been to other JCSs and the food was tasty, the staff was fun and the dining experience was enjoyable - this location however lacked all three and more. My salad was rotten and the staff made me feel like it was my fault to return it, our order came out wrong and the food was greasy, gross and tasteless. The manager eventually came out and offered free appetizers for our next visit, but I really have no intention of ever going back and declined the offer. I did appreciate his effort. however after bad food and questionable service combined with yelling, singing and loud goofing-off from the kitchen area I felt they really don't care if this ship sinks. My advise is to skip it.

I am not a fan I sea food but my wife is. The environment was fun and I had a steak. The steak wasn't great but it's not their specialty. My wife seemed to enjoy her meal and it was cool that the table basically has a trash bin in the center and a roll of paper towels. Get as messy as you can. Lol. Worth it if you like sea food.

Absolutely horrible! Alas, I so miss the Chart House that used occupy this building. They were so good!! I'm next door at a hotel for a convention every year and used to look forward to the Chart House for dinner. 5 or 6 years ago they closed and this dung heap opened up in it's stead. Yes, good idea.... let's go somewhere that trains their wait staff to insult you! Great fun! If you absolutely love the taste of butter, you "might" like some of the food here.... "might". They should rename the place "Overly Buttered, Low Grade Seafood Hut". Hut. Yes Hut. What a dump they've turned this old Chart House in to. Disgusting. Filthy. Don't dare probe the underneath of the table. Serious! The bathroom? It's great if you don't mind trash, uncleaned mirrors, and unflushed toilets. It probably smells bad too but all you can smell in Joe's is butter so that helps the bathroom. Don't bother. I'd sooner have vending machine potato chips in the lobby of the hotel than go here to eat. Avoid!

great chain, bad location. super overpriced, uneducated servers, and horrendous service is what did this place in. asked for a substitution was flatly told no without checking with the kitchen, had to walk into the kitchen just to get basic service like water. drawn butter was cold, food was overly fishy, wasnt told specials till we saw a table tent and had to ask to be explain, by then our orders were done. .. oh and I asked for water without ice, and by this time our server must have had enough of us, cuz she roughly slammed a glass down and promptly left, but the water was warm!

GREAT atmosphere! Sit out on the patio by the river. Get a drink, and relax. I held my post wedding lunch here & it was great. They roped off a huge section of the patio and we were fitted with our own two servers. They were great. I love the food personally & the drinks are always good. I love their mudslides. I always order crab, and yes WEAR THE BIB :) It's a good time, fun place altogether. :)

This is the worst Joe's Crab Shack I have ever eaten at. The fish was not fresh, the melted butter was served cold, and the service was terrible. I have eaten at many of the restaurants in this chain, and this was by far the worst one.

  • Larry W.

The decor is tacky. I guess I was expecting more. I ordered a burger, really at a seafood place? So it was one of those frozen jobs you buy in the big bag at costco that you serve to people you really don't care about. For over ten bucks it really should have been good food. Don't save me a table I don't need to go back to this place.

Great location, very nice venue, ample parking, good selection of beers, great bartender (Reagan), good eats. Spendy, but I'd rather eat here than at McGrath's or Red Lobster. Outside seating when the weather is nice is the best way to experience Joe's.

Sadly the Carb Shack is becoming hit or miss. Sometimes you get great service & great food, sometimes its great service & less than great food or visa versa, and sometimes it's just a bad experience all the way around. The most recent trip I ordered the a steam pot (which I almost always do) and noticed while the price stayed the same, the portion was smaller. 4 tiny shrimp and a small portion of crab for $25? It was cooked well and tasted great and the service was awesome but I don't think it was worth the price. That said, I will probably return again once the weather starts warming up and we can sit outside on the patio and watch the ducks on the river.

  • Craig L.

Joe's is a very good option for crab if you are not on the coast. They do a good job and their stream pots are very good, however, the portions are a bit small. This location is right on the river and they have an awesome patio. Lots of windows facing the water also so a very nice view. Service was good after our waitress noticed that we were there. I had to ask her to help us after we waited a long time.

I don't know how these other reviewers possibly have given this place anythign above two stars. The food here is TERRIBLE and I am serious about that. Ate here with a date and another couple and everybody's food was terrible. I eat a lot of seafood and will never, never, never come to Joes again. To make the experience worse the wait staff actually tried some entertainment. It was like watching a crew of zombies go through the motions of some terrible nightmare song. How is this place even stilli n business? It was really obvious that the waiters hated doing the song they way they rolled their zombie eyes at one another. Will never come back...

Joe's Crab Shack is like someone took a blender, threw in mixed cds, glitter, fish and alcohol, pushed blend and some how that crazy mixture of ingredients creates an entertaining experience. This is not a place for a quiet dinner because the servers sing and dance (this became far more tolerable as the evening goes on, that is, if you are enjoy a distilled beverage). This is a place to eat a lot, drink a lot and be rowdy with your group of friends. The more people you have in your party the better. Covering the basics: The Booze. Keeping with the beach, south, summer time style, most of their drinks are very sweet but full of alcohol. They are very tasty (if you don't mind sweet drinks that is). I had a Pomegranate Mojito, which was tasty and actually worked as a flavored Mojito (sometimes they just taste weird). I also tried the Shark Bite, which is as much liquid sugar you can get in one drink-- lemon rum, vodka, heavy on the blue curacao, sweet and sour and grenadine that you pour from great white sharks. yes I did type great white sharks and you do get to keep them. The Food: The dinner I ate was the Grilled Malibu Shrimp meal, with broccoli and rice. I really wanted to like it but the it was really salty. The flavor was there but don't know why they added so much salt. The broccoli was really good, not overly done and not underdone. In fact I wished I had more of it to eat. The Service: Our server was friendly but it took her awhile for us to first see her. I definitely would go for the drinks and I would be willing to try a different meal to see if it was less salty. I would give Joe's another crack.

First where is the crab cocktail ? No changes allowed on menu. You get only what is on menu. Food quality was average. Pricing a little high given average food.

Loved the food esp. That we don't have a Joe's in Hawaii so this rating isn't about the food but the service. Service leaves a lot of room for improvement.

Not bad food but the dancing thing their servers do it gratuitous. I'd prefer when I asked for a refill on my salad if the answer were "that's not our policy but why not.". It's the unexpected that makes one a true fan.

Stopped here for lunch with my family on a Saturday afternoon. I ordered the Dungeness crab steamer pot (garlic herb). The crab was good, but my hands were covered with grease after eating it. It was like they doused the crab in oil while cooking it. I can't say that there was much garlic herb flavor on the crab. The steam pot came with an ear of corn (over mature and over cooked), and two small red potatoes. I had low expectations of Joe's, and the restaurant didn't even meet those.

While I really enjoy the ambiance and atmosphere at Joe's Crab Shack, the food is just really over-rated. The last time I was there (and I do mean last), I ordered calimari, and it came out greasy with "parts" in the calimari that didn't belong. Nasty, nasty, nasty. It looked as though they had dumped fish parts in batter, deep fried it, and served it. Still makes me shudder just thinking about it. The rest of the food was merely so-so. For the prices, location, and time it takes to get a table--I really expect some excellent seafood. If they would improve their menu and food quality, this would be my go-to restaurant for large groups and out of town friends. I like the singing waiters and fun atmosphere. But, it's one of those restaurants that relies on its good looks and charm, not its food.

Based on his charm, personality, wit, and enthusiasm, I'd have given this restaurant 5 stars just for the AMAZING service we received from Adrian. He did an outstanding job, and made my first visit to Joe's Crab Shack memorable and fun. The food was average, and as one other person posted, kind of the "Applebee's of Seafood". However, great service and patio dining alongside the Greenbelt trump average food (perhaps I just ordered the wrong thing). Thanks Adrian ! I'll definitely be back !!

Atmosphere at Joe's Crab Shack is ok, it feels like a chain establishment, which it is. The menu was a little intimidating with all of its options. I went with the King Crab Bucket. I figure I may as well try the speciality. The crab was good enough, nothing to rave about, but def a good meal. Our waitress had a fairly annoying voice, and she checked on our table a little too often, but hey some of you people may like being interrupting when your trying to drink your margarita. Patron Margarita was pretty good, just too small. By the third margarita I realized I should ask for less ice, whic h didn't help much either. Ohh yes, and some really annoying song came on and the whole staff came out dancing and singing, which might have been ok, if you couldnt tell everyone dancing and singing hated that song, hated there job, and hated the fact that they had to sing it just to work there. Would you like people singing to you while they are pissed and you are trying to eat and/or enjoy a conversation? The bill for two people came to $100, which was a little high for an establishment of its kind, and yes I do realize we had Crab and 4 Drinks. When I first starting writing this, I wanted to give them four stars, but now I remember the entire experience, and it has been downgraded to a 3 star establishment. Enjoy

I had a great time at this restaurant. As far as seafood goes, it is admittedly not the greatest restaurant. This place does have a fun ambiance, however, that I appreciated. I visited the shack while staying next door at the DoubleTree Inn. The Shack has fun music playing, and the servers dance to certain songs (which I would estimate play every half hour or so.) My group was served by Mallory. When we were greeted, she explained the "bucket" in the middle of the table. She was friendly and approachable! She was able to judge the "character" of our group and react appropriately. She briefly explained the menu, and quickly began to rattle off the beers on tap when I asked. I say began, because I told her to stop as soon as she mentioned Blue Moon! She brought our drinks quickly, despite her joking about the fact that they had a new bartender. I ordered the BBQ Dungeness Crab dinner, which was served with potatoes, drawn butter, and corn on the cob. I have been spoiled by living in the San Francisco Bay Area with fresh crab delivered daily. Despite this spoilage, I found that the crab was mighty tasty! My dining partners ordered the Shrimp Trio with a "Shark Bite" for a beverage (Basically looked like a margarita with Blue Curacao, into which a shot of granadine was dropped) and the Garlic Mussels appetizer with some kind of blended alcoholic drink. The bucket of mussels arrived with the rest of the meal. Unfortunately, half of the bucket had not opened during cooking (one should not eat mussels that have not opened.) When the problem was brought to Mallory's attention (the kitchen's problem, not hers,) she immediately and quickly fixed it by ordering up another full bucket of mussels, despite our already having eaten half of the first bucket. Aside from being a great server, Mallory was friendly and cute as a button. I would definitely dine here again, and would request to be served by her! Maybe the next time I'm in Boise I'll get a shoulder rub when she ties on my crab bib? As a server, Mallory gets 5 stars.

Definitely over priced touristy restaurant and not somewhere you would ever eat on a regular basis. I am not going to lie, I love all the varieties and flavors of crabs but as with lobster there is a limit as to how much I am willing to spend to enjoy it annually. The staff is always friendly and they even dance (macarena style) along the river walk next to the tables on the patio area. For sure you spend more time cracking shells and digging out succulent morsels of crab meat than you do actually eating but I can only guess that's what you are actually paying for, the adventure and experience. It's sort of like going to Disney Land on a plate. You had fun but after all is said and done, you leave wondering if it was really worth spending all that money. Guess this doesn't really matter if you are female and a guy is picking up the tab or mom & dad is treating you while on a short visit. The corn on the cobb is always devine. The Garlic bread in my humble opinion, should be free, considering how much you are paying for the crab meat that you have to work so hard just to savor.

I'm actually a little shocked at the poor reviews on this establishment. I'm not really a chain restaurant type of consumer but as far as this place goes, I could care less because the food is always SO yummy! Not to mention the service which has always been superb! I've been several times and have never had a complaint. Obviously this isn't the place to go if you're looking for a romantic getaway but if you're looking for a relaxed, casual atmosphere to have fun with family and friends and even just for a fun date then this is the place. Of course it helps if you love seafood but they have a few other options as well. The location on the river can't be beat! It's so fun to sit out on the patio during the summer and if it's too cold then the windows from the inside provide an excellent view as well. I can't speak about the mixed drinks as I've only had either beer or martinis but the martinis are always good!

Joe's Crab Shack food has gotten better. Joe's employees try to make it fun while your there, they make a sincere stab at it. When the right tune starts playing, staff will dance and can be fun, as long as the dancers are having fun. Any employee that ever thought about show would want to take advantage of this opportunity as a performer and show their stuff. They will throw subliminal jokes like 'muscles' meaning buy a mussels appetizer. You might notice a sour odor when you walk in that a mopping could fix. I head for the patio which has the best river views in Boise. Traffic along the Greenbelt provides a boardwalk vibe, think Venice beach 7 in the morning. Joe's freezes their beer mugs which is super on hot days, and when I say frozen I mean glaciated; be careful to not get your hand accidentally stuck. Test the chef by ordering a calamari appetizer; it'll be great. As you eat your calamari remember its used as bait on fishing boats in the pacific. So, if Joe's can make bait taste great, take it the next step and order a dinner. So, you can drink a beer from a frosty mug, sit on the patio listening to a professional sound system, see a floor show, and watch ducks float down the river. Joe's in Boise is a great place to go and can be fun if you give them the chance to entertain you.
