We found it! After a decade of searching we finally found really good, clean, and delicious sushi in Boise. Seriously though, I haven't eaten at happy fish in a very, very long time and we (my wife, and two of our friends) gave it a try tonight. It was amazing. EAT HERE!

The menu is great, the food good, and the prices reasonable. For the last 5 to 6 years I have continued to try to like them. After you get you food and drinks thugs are fine. However, consistently waiting 1/2 hour to get service is unbelievable. Their wait staff is sub-par, not customer friendly, and frankly useless. We stared at the cocktail girl to at least get drinks and she shunned the table. Their partner restaurant, Ha Penny, never has this service problem. I simply don't understand why the service is that awful on that side of the building. Don't go there if you have somewhere to be.

The sushi I received was the Chef's special! It was absolutely delicious. We shared a few Chef Specials and Sushi for 2 amongst a group of about 15 people. It was great! The only thing I would recommend to the consumer is make sure you have time to really sit and enjoy. The food took about an hour and thirty minutes to hit the table. We all devoured the sushi as it came out. They came out at different times depending when it was done, so some waited even longer.

We have been coming here for years and it's been very consistent. Great service, and even though they have changed their sushi chef, the food is still great. Vegas roll is a favorite! And the caterpillar roll is great with some tobiko on top! The only thing I don't like that they have changed is no more eel sauce, now they just use store bought teriyaki..

Loved the Fire, Rainbow and California rolls! Finally, sushi sliced thin enough to comfortably eat! Jalapeño Margarita and Sweetish Fish Martinis were an amazing start to a great experience. We're traveling and will most certainly be back.

I am surprised to see the low ratings, but then again it has been quite awhile since we have been there so maybe things have changed. We stopped in for lunch a couple of years ago and the sushi was awesome, among the best I have had. I have some Japanese friends that said Happy Fish is the best sushi they have ever had, here or in Japan. But again, it has been years since eating there.

Wasn't impressed by their sushi at all. Seemed far too overpriced for the quality and quantity of the services rendered. I was in a group of 4 people and we were unsure as to quantity so tried to order more after the first round. The wait staff did not check on the food or return in a timely manner to take the additional order. When we were finally able to order a second time the rolls came out with hair in them. They were kind enough to return and make a new batch, but it took longer than the first time. We left without having an enjoyable experience, having paid too much, and not having had our waters refilled. I would not recommend.

Eh Average I'd definitely stick with the amateur sushi at this place. Good location though, so it's super convenient if you're in the neighborhood on a weekday for lunch!

*****five star cafe***** 1st, I have to say the low star ratings are years old. The food has really become impressive! I won't reiterate how charmingly decorated it is (yes it is) or retell about nice and clean (yes it is) as all this should be. Secondly, I love how unpretentious it is. You're not nosed up or snorted at when you ask about flavors, ingredients, or advice (not that I need any- I just like to check attitudes way before I allow someone's food inside me!) They have pretty usual sushi, nothing so wild and different it makes even Jiro Ono raise a brow. Thirdy, they made my friend, whose first sushi experience ever, very relaxed and confident to try sushi. Which, by the way- they enjoyed so much want to go back and have again! I mean- that's big; this is a person who used to think sushi would be disgusting, but now has had his mind changed on ONE visit for the first time! Also want to add, music was nice- not loud at all, but could've been lowered a notch. I think I've found my happy place at happy fish! :-)

i always really enjoy their sushi. it has taken the place of one of my fave sushi restaurants. the service can be slow and lacking at times, but i think the food makes up for it

Didn't know where to go for lunch on Wednesday so I looked on Groupon and found this hidden gem. We had a Philly Roll and Fire Roll. Both were EXCELLENT and the service was friendly. We will definitely go back and might just buy another Groupon!

Every once in a while life gets too predictable, so I do things, like get a coupon to a sushi restaurant in downtown Boise that has received a plethora of 2- and 1-star reviews and is attached to an Irish pub. Because, as the doctors say, food poisoning is usually not fatal, and any psychological issues brought about by bad sushi experiences can be cured with lots of anti-depressants and a good shrink (read: drink). For a Monday night, Happy Sushi was pretty busy. When we arrived past 8pm there was a large table of 6 and several couples on the patio. (The large group was using a coupon, too, because we got their bill). The waitress/busperson/bartender also hadn't gotten around to clearing any of the tables, and from the dirty dishes it seemed like there was quite a crowd earlier. The biggest failure of Happy Fish is the number of staff they have. There was only ONE sushi chef making ALL of the rolls/nigiri. There was only ONE wait person doubling as two other people. We waited quite a while for our two rolls - Fire Roll and Spider Roll...which were not bad. The chef did later apologize as did the waitress, since the large group had a few orders for rolls. For $11.99 I didn't expect the rolls to arrive with fish roe spilling onto my shoe and fireworks going off with every bite, but the portion was large enough. They didn't skimp on the tuna for the Fire Roll, but the Spider Roll was a little disappointing - the outside was wrapped with seaweed, which I don't usually expect for a $11.99 roll. But given that the sushi guy was making ALL the food, I should be grateful he didn't use Saran wrap. My Sidecar came out without any brandy taste and was a little on the sweet side. My boyfriend had a bottle of Kirin and was given what I call "Asian" glass - a glass that's short and thin and looks like it holds 6 instead of the usual 8 ounces. Overall, a pretty disappointing experience, which could be easily solved by adding just one other staff. The food was a little better than average, and our server was friendly and tried hard, but being short staffed showed.

WORST PLACE EVER!!! As a former manager for the best restaurant company in America, I've learned to deal with horrendous service. Never do I post on Yelp. Tonight, I received the most disrespectful to-go order in my life. George should lose his job. As an executive at a respectable Boise company, I will ensure cash no longer flows through here. My group of friends who regularly eat here will find a new establishment. Advice: when you forget to place someone's order and the customer is running late, do not blame them and then ask them to leave with no food but a credit card receipt. Rather, comp the whole bill.

No salmon? They ran out of salmon. Boo!! We love sushi and simply because we bought a groupon we will be going back. Hope they don't run out of salmon next time we make it over there. I like the patio seating option!

I went there on a real cold night (a few nights ago) and the only reason I mention is this is just to share a word of Caution: don't sit by the doors. It's not a big place by any means, only a couple tables in the front area, but it's DRAFTY by those doors. Anyways. First, I tried the miso-glazed salmon appetizer. I'm not sure what they were going for here, though, because that didn't taste like miso. And I love, love fish (and salmon especially), but I really just didn't care to eat this. Eh. Then, one of my go-to to-try-out-a-sample-of-a-place's-fish dish, Chirashi-zushi: What happened? Was someone playing Thanksgiving in the kitchen? There were so many extra THINGS piled up on what would be an otherwise normal chirashi, or well, what would Actually be chirashi-zushi. It's a clever way to use all the cucumber rinds (and more! wait....) from the cucumber rolls. Kudos for not wasting, I guess. Also, there was some Costco seaweed salad and squid salad in the bowl. Except the squid salad, though identical in contents to the Costco kind as far as I could tell, was even gooier than the Costco version. And the rice desperately needed more vinegar! So, overwhelmed and confused, I tried to eat everything that Didn't Belong first, but eating half an avocado makes you quite full, quite fast (wait, I didn't mention that that was sitting in there, too?). But then when I did that, and accomplished normal Chirashi-zushi status (just my fish and rice), I was plainly reminded how...plain the rice was. This was a battle I couldn't win. [i should mention that the escolar was good, and perhaps the best that I've had, but I wouldn't suggest you to go and order ten pieces of it with a drink to comprise your dinner; I didn't and haven't personally experienced any escolar-ic side-effects, but there is apparently a reason it's banned in Japan and Italy, and others stick it with warning labels...(look it up if need be, eww). So good job on the escolar, Happy Fish? Maybe? This is a questionable congratulations. Oops, Happy Fish, oops.] The unagi sushi was alright, but it was cut rather thin and the rice portion was, again, not vinegary enough. Additionally it was a rather large round mound that could eat the fish itself (aka too much). They're trying to "up" the traditional cuisines, but personally, I enjoy my Japanese food traditional. Plain grilled salmon, chirashi-zushi un-"spiced-up", and well, I guess, just figure out the portioning on the sushi. When I'm old enough to legally drink in a restaurant, I might come back for that. Those look promising -- green tea and midori liqueur, and ginger vodka. Mmm.

I've had some of the best sushi Seattle, Portland and Vegas have to offer, and this place hangs with them. They go way out of their way to make the customer a happy fish too. My buddy and I got here at 11 am for an early lunch. Happy Fish wasn't open yet, but Ha' Penny (same ownership) was, so we walked in, ordered a beer and inquired about Happy Fish. Buddy's wife was joining us but was on a tight schedule...the waiter said he would pass this on to the HF manager just as soon as she got in, which would be a few minutes. Sure enough, just as my buddy's wife rolls in, here comes the HF manager and the HP waiter ready to take our order and answer any questions, in effect opening early just for us. FYI, apparently you can eat Happy Fish food whilst sitting in Ha' Penny, but not vice versa. We shared two rolls and some tempura...dank stuff. Nothing at all wrong with it. Needless to say further, the service was outstanding. It wasn't dirt cheap, but compared to what you'd pay in a larger city it was very reasonable. One of my favorite sushi spots anywhere. And just a BTW, I don't know how y'all Yelp around here, but where I come from, talking about how other people should have reviewed is Verboten. Everyone is entitled to their opinion whether it matches yours or not.

great location, to bad they have a boring menu, there is no flair to what they have to offer. Some one should explain the correct way to slice a sushi roll. Nice that they are open late and on Sundays, but if you wants something better cross the street to PF CHANGS not sushi but at least there food has flavor and style.

Rolls are pretty decent, but slightly over-priced. Same goes for the sashimi. Entrees are awful and ridiculously over-priced. 14 dollar noodle bowl is more bland, boring and flavor-free than a 99 cent cup-of-soup. Atmosphere and decor are fine, but nothing to write home about. Service is adequate. If you're already in the area and desperate for sushi and, give it a shot. But don't go out of your way to dine here. Especially if anyone in your party does not eat sushi and is looking for an entree.

Well--we are traveling through the state to get back to WA State where we are accustomed to getting OUTSTANDING sushi , so maybe we expect too much while traveling inland? Anyway--good things first---the staff were incredibly friendly, helpful and top drawer all the way. The sushi? Well, it was okay but not exactly what we wanted. The spider roll had a bit of a sweet taste which was disconcerting; the rainbow roll was just pretty good. I wanted an amber beer, so the waitress quickly got one from the Irish Pub just next door (the Ha Penny) which I thought was a pretty nifty thing to do. We don't know about other sushi offerings in Boise, so can't compare it to anything else here.

Worst sushi in Boise! the rolls were so small and they were very mediocre! For the price you would think that were giant rolls! The service was bad and I was really really upset when they wrote themselves a larger tip! I wasnt impressed and I think that I wrote in for a $3.00 tip and when I check my account there was an added tip of $7.00! Stupidly I lost the receipt and didnt have that as evidence! So I called numerous times letting people know about the issue and was promised a call from the GM so they can talk to the bookkeeper! And it never got fixed!! So F them! I have restaurants that have made mistakes too and they look it up right then and fix it without me have to come in or keep calling! I wish I could give no stars because I would!!

Worst dining experience of my life! My girlfriend and I had dinner here a few weeks ago. The food was okay but when it came time to pay our bill there was a problem with the ticket. An hour and fifteen minutes and three employees later we get out of there. Never once during this ordeal did anyone: employee, manager, anyone, offer to buy us so much as a cup of tea. I called down there the next day to speak to the owner, Dell. I've since left three messaged for him and I've never heard a word. Don't support this guy and his faulty program. Otherwise he won't be forced to make things better. Go to Shige's instead!

Hmm this place was a little limited to my liking but i tried to make the best out of it. I ended up getting some kind of roll -- i forgot what it was called. sorry but i did end up try a lot of stuff such as the bumble bee roll! and OMG it was great! I order another roll after that cause it was so good. The atmosphere was relaxing a tad bit small but nice to have lunch with a friend or a nice and comfortable setting for a nice dinner. Food ***** Location ***** Price : cheap

This was my second time dining with Happy Fish. Today was carryout and they did an excellent job. I'm a big fan of spicy tuna and the Rainbow roll. Both were awesome. The staff is very friendly, but that was a little different when I dined-in a few weeks ago. One big problem with dining-in is the place is rather small. I'm not a fan of hi-top tables and they have only to regular (low-top) tables for dining. I'd probably frequent there a little more if the seating was better. Although the place is both attractive and clean. Moved here 2 months ago and haven't tried sushi anywhere else... and it'll probably be a while before I do since these folks do it right. One of the locals recommended it. I highly recommend as well!

I wanted to try a new place for some sushi. I ended up getting sick about an hour after leaving. It just didn't sit right with me. Some of the rolls turned out being $2 more then what the menu stated. I won't be going back.

if you read the previous 3 star ratings, you'll see they really meant to give this place 2 stars. i have yet to have a good server, and i've eaten here at least 10 times. WHY?! why do i keep going back? because i'm out with idiot friends who want to try it regardless of my warnings. as for the food, prepare your mouth... for disapointment. boring and uninspired. instead try Superb Sushi, Kyoto's, or ANYWHERE ELSE!

Okay, this place has got to go down! I am not usually a hater, but time after time of inconsistancy has finally done me in. Everytime I go there it's either average or god-awful. The event that did me in? Lunch on a Wednesday that took well over an hour... we were one of three tables and a couple at the sushi bar, we were the second group(2 people) in the door and the people that were at the bar arrived 20 minutes after us and got on thier SECOND round of cocktails before our food order was taken. The service? 'Biiittchhh pleease!' And ohhh her attitude was precious... like an evil, bitter cat lady. I usually get the spicy tuna roll (pretty basic and run of the mill)... oh god, GROUND UP OLD TUNA. If I wanted cat food, I would have gone to the servers house, I am sure she is loaded with it, since she will grow old, alone and with her cats. And I love repeatedly asking for the same thing over and over again. PS: miso and seaweed salad was pre-ordered, and I got my salad after my cat food. So, in conclusion: bad service, funky sushi and so 1992 atmosphere. Blah.

I LOVE sushi, and this place is definitely not the best I have had, but it's certainly not the worst. The ahi sashimi is excellent. They have a fairly large menu so its easy to find something you will like. I also like that its a pretty small place, feels intimate and quiet, like a good sushi place should.

I was in Boise with a friend who was originally from the area and she used to go to this place all the time. The server was great, but the food was ehhhh. It was not worth the $4.50 nigiri or the $ 10+ rolls that taste bland. I will give props to the scallops that were awesome (mostly due to the dipping sauce) Growing up in a Japanese family maybe I just have higher expectations of what sushi should taste like, but I think next time I'd skip this place.

I have been there twice more since my original review and have been happy with everything. Based on the reviews here I half expect to go there and be wildly disappointed. So far I have been treated better than average and the food is solid.

We walked out after waiting over an hour for our food. Even with a reservation they were not prepared. The waitress actually avoided our table and making eye contact with us. It took over 30 minutes just to bring us miso soup and even when she did it wasn't hot and we didn't have utensils. Sorry for walking out but it was a miserable experience.

We dined there on a Saturday evening, and found the service inattentive, the food extremely slow, and the music much too loud to hold a decent conversation. Food was fine when it came.

If you want sushi and you're in Boise, please don't go here. The sushi wasn't even fresh and it made one of my friends a little sick. It's also over-priced for the lack of taste. Try Kyoto's or Koi if you're in the area.

Small Sushi restaurant. Major pitfall is how small it is. Sushi is superlative and expensive. While it's not the best Sushi I've ever had, it's easily the best Sushi bar in Boise.

This one is a bit of a puzzle. Not horrible I guess to most people but to me a puzzle and at times awkward - not what I want in a dining experience. I am a sushi fan, could eat it 7 days a week, but not a sushi snob - big difference. I am fairly aware of service though. I had been told, as I asked around while out having a glass of wine here and there where good sushi was. Repeatedly told by people in the industry that Happy Fish was the best; even learning that they get fresh fish 3x a week whereas other places just 2x. So my experience was Friday night, after Flicks, we arrived about 9PM. I was surprised how small, empty and bland it was for a sushi place but being with a group of 3 others I quietly went along. 2 girls ordered a large sake to share and.. after some hesitation I asked the server girl with the cat eye glasses if they had Asahi Dry beer.. after some back and forth about it not being extra dry but the regular dry I said " Yes, the regular Ashi which is Dry, I suppose I will have a can of that.". with that I turned to a girlfriend next to me and mentioned "you want a glass so we can split it? I dont want a whole beer." She concurred so I asked, although the server heard, for 2 glasses so we could split the beer. When I saw the lil milk glass (perfect) of beer in front of me I was delighted but then her pouring my friend's glas from a HUGE bottle which she then put on the table I thought WTF? I didnt make an issue, I was with new company but now I have a 24 oz bottle of beer? The other 2 issues that were actually striking to me were the LONG wait for our simple order. My friend had a rice bowl and the other three of us each had a single roll. I am not kidding when I say it took over 30 minutes. There were 2 people dedicated to the sushi prep station, then the GM guy and my server. WOW... The 2nd real issue was my roll. Having eaten before the movie I just had a spicy sushi roll (which you pay a premium for above the regular sushi roll). It was a regular sushi roll with a HUGE, nickel sized topping of straight sirachi on each piece. Not sirachi with japanese mayo, nothing spicy incorporated into the roll.. In all the cities and all the states and all the countries I have had sushi I have never been presented with something like that?! Super lame.. and even odd.. no? And for what its worth our lil jug of soy sauce ran dry - come on keep up on the tables. Lastly the presentation of the check. So 9 times out of 10, yes lets just split the bill evenly, (after the age of 28 they is how you have to get use to rolling.. just find friend that eat and drink like you do). But this evening was unique as for some of us it was all on dinner and others just a roll. So when she offered to split the check in 4 by us we were all like, "well, no.. we had different levels.. un ah.. " and she replied.. "no like by 4... for like each of you".. and again our "ums, ah..er.." then she said.. so you have a check only for what each of you ordered.. "yes!" we all concurred... Not a big deal but just a bit akward. Think about your table before you approach dont just wing it. So my conclusion to the puzzle is to offer these hypothesizes: (1) They just under order low or have cash flow problems (2) Industry people get exceptional service and exceptional sushi, not saved for regular, unknown folks like you and I I have to say hands down that was such an odd experience. Come on this is Boise people, step it up, figure it out and get it right. visit Fukoyhama over the mall (see my other review). They never let down.
