Italian Cuisine
The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.
Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.
If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.

I've never been a big fan of lasagna. It almost seems like an Italian cliche. It's the first dish non-Italians try to impress family and friends with after mastering spaghetti. Growing up, my sister thought she made the best lasagna in the world. Sadly, it wasn't and it turned me against the dish. Until now. I heard good things about Cucina Di Paolo and after viewing their menu online, I decided to try them out for lunch. Co-owner Mary Jane Wegner greeted me warmly and after I hesitated while viewing the daily special menu, she asked if this was my first visit. She then went on to explain the specials and the regular lunch items. I decided to try the traditional beef and sausage lasagna, served with a salad. The lasagna, which came with a white cream sauce and real parmesan cheese -- not the sawdust in the green can -- was very flavorful and a nice portion. It changed my mind about what lasagna can be. Chef and co-owner Paul Wegner came out from behind the open kitchen and asked what I thought. He also thanked me for coming in, as did his wife as I paid my bill. What a gem of a restaurant. They have also preserved the iconic Maytag washerwoman sign that has graced the Boise Bench for decades.

I am here at Boise for training with the Forest Service, and I looked on YELP to see what restaurants are good to eat at. I saw that Cucina Di Paolo was rated very high; and the rates are not kidding. The food is good; I had the meat loaf sandwich with the soup of the day. It was very good, just like your mom and dad were cooking for you. The best part of this restaurant is the owners: Paul and Mary Jean Wegner. This couple is great!!! They are very engaged in their restaurant and are passionate about their craft. I will be back.

I brought more friends and my wife with me today. They concur... Best. Burger. Ever. Next time, we will have to venture off into their specialty menu, although if we happen to be in when the Kobe burger is back, it would be hard to resist.

Found this place on Yelp, walked in and said "oh wait this is a deli" and almost decided to walk out. I'm so glad I decided to stay! The food is exceptional and the service is superb. Lasagna was great, bread was great, soup was great, sandwich was great, cheesecake was great. Highly recommend!
(5)Heath W.
Rockstar food, and no need for advertising with the word of mouth that is bound to happen with the food that is created here and overall atmosphere. Paul and his wife are so friendly and hard-workers, and couple that with the exceptional food and it's a winning combination for the customer experience seen here. I'll be coming back and telling many more people of the experience had at Cucina Di Paolo!!!
(5)Steve M.
This place is a treasure for Boise and i am surprised its my first time here. Food is amazing and the people that work are so kind and sweet. It has a great European atmosphere but not much seating. I had the chicken spinach lasagna and its just the right amount of cheese, sauce, and noodles but packed with a ton of flavor! My friend had their Italian sausage and mushroom lasagna and she enjoyed it too. They do take and bake meals also! Check it out, your taste bugs and stomach will than you.
(5)Vic R.
The food was amazing, can't wait to go back. The hardest thing was trying to decide what to order, because the entire menu interest me.
(5)ronny h.
Let me start of by stating I have spent years in Europe. This place in a European hole in the wall. I ordered the 3 sausage fettuccini which was fantastic . I just wish the pasta would have been a little more Al Dente. Little over cooked , but it was still molto delicioso. I love how we could see the kitchen , and the freshness of the ingredients was top notch !! Fresh tomatoes garlic .. The sausages were fantastic !! If you come to Boise, make sure you check out this place ! Amazing customer service and very friendly people.
(5)April W.
Loving this place!!!! Delicious food and outstanding service!!! My daughter and I had the 3 sausage Alfredo. My husband had the meatloaf sandwich and clam chowder. My other daughter had the baked mac and cheese in 4 cheese sauce... They were all delicious however my favorite was the mac and cheese!!!! We had the peanut butter cheese cake & the bread pudding!!! Love this place when we move here we will definitely be back!!
(5)Tony C.
My vote for best Italian food in Boise. It's too bad they close at 7pm (understandable; it's family-run) but haha it seems not in keeping with the Italian stereotype of eating late.
(5)Vicki L.
You feel the love the minute you walk in the door! We chose it based on reviews and are SO glad we did! Had traditional lasagne lunch and walked away with lots of items for our freezer. Worth moving to Boise for!
(5)Alisha L.
Had lunch here the other day and oh my gosh it was good. I literally scraped every little bit off my plate. It is just good Italian comfort food. The lasagna really is amazing. I can't wait to come back and try more. I really like that the environment is very casual and relaxed. The outdoor seating offered is nice during warm weather. Felt very welcoming and staff was pleasant.
(5)Nicholas R.
I frequent Cucina's for lunch, and I have yet to be disappointed with regard to either the service or the quality of the food. The flavors have been consistently rich, portion sizes are appropriate, and the service is prompt. The restaurant itself is fairly small, with limited seating. If you're going to dine-in I'd suggest you arrive earlier in the lunch hour. The menu varies with many dishes disappearing and reappearing from time to time. The soups are a personal favorite of mine, with the mushroom soup sitting atop the list. It is a bit spendy for a lunchtime meal, but I'd consider it a worthwhile splurge. 4 stars for unique, tasty Italian food. A Bench staple.
(4)Ken T.
While traveling out of town is not easy to find good eats or use yelp a lot tonight I used it to find this restaurant and was definitely not let down the three sausage fettuccine was to die for I took home a piece of German chocolate cake for dessert I will definitely come back to this restaurant whenever traveling through Boise
(5)Michelle S.
This is hands down my favorite restaurant in Boise. Mary, Paul, Robbie and Richard are always so sweet! They are incredibly accommodating of my dietary restrictions. Not to mention, the best food ever! You MUST go there.
(5)Kimberly P.
Yelped this place 2 hours away and chanced it with our three year old. Completely not expecting a place that was more likely a deli with some small tables and an outdoor dining area. One of the reviews said you can bring your lasagna dish and have them fill it while you dine...they were not kidding. Great authentic homemade food. Good portion size and super friendly people. It is worth the chance.
(5)Bill H.
I strongly recommend this place to anybody who appreciates good home cookin. Paul is a phenomenal chef, from a BLT to homemade lasagna, you can't beat it and when you follow that up with Mary's personality, it's a home run!!! I recommend you try the spiced ice tea and some of Mary's sinful deserts. All in all, one of the best places I have ever eaten at. I frequent this place every time I travel to Idaho.
(5)Janice B.
My husband says every restaurant deserves a second chance, so we stopped in for lunch here a couple of weeks ago. This time I ordered artichoke ravioli, and it really was very good, although perhaps a bit pricey for a lunch item of modest proportions. My husband had the New England clam chowder, which he found it to be fairly bland and flavorless. Although my ravioli was indeed better than what I had before, three stars still seems like the most appropriate rating.
(3)Khaled J.
Wow! I travel all over the country for business and I got to say. This is the best potato soup and cod sandwich I had. Family owned Paul is super laid back passionate about his food kind of guy. His food is fresh and from small farms. His wife is so sweet and have good selection of deserts. Hands down hall in the wall great food!
(5)Missy B.
Best Italian in Boise, hands down. They close early and they're also closed on Mondays, so you have to plan around their hours, but it's worth it. There is very limited seating, just a few tables, but the owners are so fun we don't mind the close quarters. If you don't see something you want on the menu, talk to Paul (the chef/owner) and he'll create something custom for you.
(5)Kevin R.
I've driven by here many times, and thought I really need to stop in. I've passed their booth at the Saturday Market and thought, I should pick up some lasagna. A month ago, a friend said that he highly recommends this place, and their desserts. He says that they have a few desserts that are always available, and then several others that are made daily that are unique. This past weekend, my wife and I decided to try it. Holy cow, I have been missing out. I ordered the Clam Linguine, which was one of the best meals I have EVER had. It was delicious. It had the right bite to it, and was cheesy, and creamy, and the fresh cooked clams were outstanding. My wife ordered the Cheese ravioli. They were OK. I wouldn't say that they were my favorites, but they were good. I really want to try the lasagna now. We tried two desserts, and they were both good. My wife REALLY enjoyed the peanut butter chocolate cheesecake. This place is a place I highly recommend. Very Delicious food. It is inexpensive for what you get. My biggest complaint is that they close a bit early.
(5)Park L.
This sucks we came here and they were closed !!! Not cool Yelp maybe we should indicate the hours.
(1)Jill S.
Guess I've been sticking with my home town and not writing too many reviews out of state I love me some Italian so I did find this little place and enjoyed some good lasagna . Kinda funny looking on the outside, maybe that's what drew me in, but I got great service and since I was by my lonesome I seemed to get extra attention. But that's always a good thing when you are by yourself. I will go back next time I am in town.
(4)Hilary H.
I stopped in during a trip to Boise to pick up some sweet treats. The brownie mint dessert was amazing, rich and delicious. The brie apple crisp and banana cream pie were also great. The gentleman that helped me at the counter was also top notch. Give this place a try if you want some dessert that is out of the ordinary.
(5)Moose D.
Really tasty food, fresh and done right. Portions are just right, prices are a bit high but if ya want quality food you've gotta fork out a bit extra. I would definitely go again.
(5)Truong L.
Taste real good. Kids had the macncheese and they loved it. Homemade feel and atmosphere. Quaint lil place and was super friendly. He predicted the hawks to win the Super Bowl so extra kudos! Can't bring a big group or anything as seating is more for small lunches and dinners.
(5)Kara D.
Such great food and fun people!! We arrived just before closing but were fed anyway. And we were brought a dessert treat before our meal. Food was excellent and owners a kick! We will be back!
(5)George S.
Was looking for a place to eat after landing in Boise and found this little gem. Paul and Mary Jean are the greatest. Husband and wife team cranking out some of the best Italian food around. He does the cooking, she does the baking. Everything is made from scratch and cooked to order. The pasta melts in your mouth. Outdoor patio very nice. Don't miss this one.
(5)Steve R.
True to its sign, the lasagna is indeed killer. The chipotle meatloaf was moist, tasty and well prepared. Dinner was served fast and friendly by MJ. Desserts were heavenly.Great operation.
(5)Nita M.
Delicious and friendly, friendly service! My husband and I stopped here for dinner just before flying out of town, what a great find!
(5)Brad W.
There's Boise, and then there's the weird parts of Boise. Cucina Di Paolo on Vista Avenue is located in one of those weird parts. (My apologies if you live in this area. Nothing personal.) When I stumbled upon the stellar reviews for this hole-in-the-wall eatery, it certainly piqued my interest and caused me to ask "could this conceivably be one of those diamonds in the rough?" Well, this restaurant became a blip on my must-try radar, because of that exact question in my mind. I really, really wanted to be in the know! Despite some reviews that mentioned tight, limited seating inside (almost a sure star-killer for me), I decided to give increased weight to the more than two dozen reviewers raving about the quality of the food and friendly owners. Now mind you, regardless of my professional culinary training, I'm perfectly capable of giving (and have given) 5-star reviews to eateries with less atmosphere than the moon. Yet what I failed to carefully pay attention to until now was that only ten of the twenty-seven 5-star reviews for this establishment were written by reviewers from Idaho. That means that an overwhelming majority (63%) of those 5-star reviews are from out-of-state. And while I can't prove the existence of rigged (or bought on Fiverr) reviews, the statistic itself is undeniably a huge red flag. Huge! But should you decide to see for yourself what all the supposed hype is about, here's what you'll find... As you enter the door, you'll immediately view a few prominently exhibited deli display cases separating the aforementioned tiny dining area and the kitchen. And what, do you ask, is inside of these display cases? Well, the best that I can describe it is that it appears to be none other than all of the leftovers from last night's church potluck dinner. At a quick glance inside the cases, you'll observe about a dozen uninspired-looking desserts, several wilted garnishes, and a few crusty, unappealing casserole dishes with various half-eaten lasagnas. Then to top it all off, a plate of shriveling salmon fillets... with a side of listeria, perhaps? I don't know for sure, but Lord, please bless the stomach of the person who decides to find out. Overall, the taste of the food that my party and I did dare to order and consume was hit and miss. The biggest miss was the tiramisu -- virtually flavorless and ruined even further with a generous squirt of some cheap-@$$ store-bought chocolate syrup. How any food establishment would be considered "the best Italian in Boise" with dull-as-dirt tiramisu is beyond me. But this mom-and-pop did actually squeak out 2-stars from me. One star for the option of dining on their grapevine shaded patio seating area, plus the welcoming, friendly people even collected a star of their own. However, there's simply nothing here that impresses me to desire a repeat visit. Recommendation: Search high and low for your friend's Italian grandma, and eat at her house instead.

If you're looking for great food look no further. I have utter faith that I could have ordered anything on the menu and thoroughly enjoy it. Great service with a family feeling! I hope to come back real soon. Ps. Don't miss out on their awesome desserts!.Ds
(5)Nick T.
My favorite place in Boise for lasagna and eggplant Parmesan. Just like prior reviewers I couldn't get a picture of the food before it was all in my belly. Paul has an exceptional gift, everything he makes is handmade and exceptionally good.

To start out this is a very small restaurant probably smaller than many starbucks. There are probably less than 10 tables and they are very close together in a 20-30x20-30 foot room. The kitchen is attached to the main "dining" area and there is a cooler case separating the two which houses much of their take home menu. We decided to eat in and the menu is fairly spectacular for a restaurant so small and the staff was very kind. The primary issue I have with this place is how everything we ordered seemed to be simply reheated in a microwave. The sauce on our sausage pasta was very thin and the sausage itself resembled something from a can, thinly cut and texture-less. So at first glace I was pretty disappointed and the utter lack of AC on a hot day didn't contribute anything positive. Still I decided I was hungry enough to eat anything and it smelled far better than some other restaurants I'd been to. The flavor was exceptional and spice usage hard to parallel. The sauce was still thin, the usual problems existed with microwaved food and the sausage left something to be desired but that flavor redeemed the entire thing. Upon talking more with the counter employee we realized that the place had gotten famous for take and bake food which is many ways explained the reheat preparation of our own. So without a doubt their in house service was ok at best but as a take and bake Italian food they are among the best I've ever had. I would not recommend this place for a romantic night out but for an exceptional take and bake lasagna you would be hard to come by better.
(4)Paul H.
The food here is really good. They are known for their lasagne, but I tried the ravioli as it is a temporary special. It was amazing. Everything is home made, hand made. If you want to get out of the world of chain restaurants and want a quant place with fantastic food, go here. Delicious deserts too.
(5)Jorge H.
Not only was the food excellent, but, the owners are extremely warm, friendly, and passionate about their food. It's obvious that everything here is made with love. Don't miss it!
(5)Terri L.
We took a pan of chunky vegetable lasagna home and just finished eating it. It was absolutely delicious and I can't wait to have another piece tomorrow night!!!
(5)Selena F.
We read great reviews about this restaurant and it lived up to it's reputation. The menu was extensive with great lasagna and wonderful dessert options. Also, if you are in the area, they have many of their dishes to go and heat up at home. Very nice people and a great experience! Thanks!
(5)James F.
Great food and quick a la carte service. The menu is also quite huge which was surprising for such a small mom and pop. You get to choose between the standard menu, a variety of pre made quiche/lasagna or whatever specials they have going on. I got the sockeye salmon special and it was way better than the $13 they charged. They also have NO corking fee and gave me time to run over to grocery store to grab a bottle. Great spot that I will revisit if I ever return to Boise.
(5)Cammie C.
Lick your plate good! Cute restaurant, quaint & cozy. Sweet owner and family. Nice patio seating available with limited indoor seating. Wish we had this restaurant in Coeur D'Alene!
(5)Cathy J.
This place is great! We were visiting Boise and wanted to get a take home dinner to share with family. We met Paul who told us, in a nutshell, that he would be happy to do whatever we wanted and have it ready at whatever time it was needed. And he seemed genuinely happy. The service was really top notch. So we ordered his recommended meat lasagna (Italian sausage and mushroom) and his recommended veggie lasagna (chunky veggies), with salad and garlic bread. We came back later and everything was hot and ready. Except the garlic bread, which Paul told us exactly how to heat when we got home. Paul even carried the order to the car for us. That's right, the owner takes personal care of his customers. Nice! Speaking of service, while we were picking up our order we watched Paul help a very elderly couple settle in. He stored the old fellow's walker in the kitchen so he wouldn't trip over it, helped him sit down, then brought him the pillow from his walker. Meanwhile the kid at the register was super nice too. Can't say enough nice things about this place. As for the food - it was fabulous! Perfectly done with lots of flavor. These folks get everything right.
(5)Lorell R.
My husband and I were looking for good Italian place to eat for lunch, and discovered Cucina Di Paolo on a Google search. If you haven't been there, you should go! The food is fresh and nearly everything is made from scratch. There's a whopping 15 different varieties of lasagna...my husband had the chicken and spinach one, and it was amazing. You can also bring in your own casserole dish, and they will fill it with one of their lasagnas, and you can take it home and bake it. I had the bruschetta chicken sandwich and a salad, which was heavenly in its own right. They also offer several daily specials --- I think there were 10-12 of them available on the day we visited. Additionally, they have a wonderful assortment of desserts. We couldn't leave without ordering an individual sized banana cream pie cup...it was so delicious. Be aware that this is a small establishment; there's just a few tables inside, and they have a small, shaded patio that has about five more tables available. Don't let this stop you from coming in. We also had the chance to actually speak to the chef, Paul, and his wife Mary Ann, who are friendly and very nice. There aren't many restaurants left in town where that's even possible. I would say this place is one of Boise's best kept secrets and you are missing out if you haven't been there.
(5)Dan F.
Just visiting the area and decided to check Cucina Di Paolo based on the other Yelp comments. What a fantastic decision!! It's a small family run restaurant/catering business where amazing food and relationships are clearly a passion. We had the baked ziti, traditional lasagna and chicken parmesan. All were fantastic! Bring your own bottle of vino and they will open and serve it with no corkage fee. Don't forget to save room for the homemade desserts. The dining room is quite small but they have a nice outdoor eating area if it's nice outside. Strong recommendation!!
(5)Dave S.
This is my favorite place to eat of all time, anywhere, past-present-future. All the food goes through the Paul's expert hands so the quality and consistency just can't be beat anywhere. Paul's wife Mary Ann provides the entertainment, you just need to come in to see what I'm talking about. If you understand how a small place run by true artists can make all the difference between mediocre and great then you know where you need to be the next time you are hungry.
(5)Elizabeth O.
The first time we ate here for lunch, they gave us a quick run down how the place works, and treated us amazingly - it was just as much the incredible food as the service that had us raving and promising to come back. However, no matter how many times I go back, the service is still amazing!!! And the food...can't even tell you how incredible it is. I barely get to look at the amazing menu because the specials are always superb. Once they had these incredible crab cakes...real, big chunks of crab...and after complimenting the chef (he always shouts over the counter to customers to see how their food is) he told us he believes you should see real chunks of crab in crab cakes! Amen, sir. AMEN. The soup is always great. If you like soup, go here. And any time there is a special with bay scallops...get it. I promise. Get it. A place like this, great pricing and great lunch service (in and out in 30 minutes) is unbeatable in Boise. Add to that the amazing to-go menu, lasagnas made to order, and even the cute decor - it's the crown jewel of the Bench!!
(5)Vannessa S.
Food was delicious. One star deduction for the fact that their credit card machine died while we were being rang up and the owner asked us to walk next door to the bank to withdraw cash from the ATM. Get a better CC system and you'll be five stars, Cucina!
(4)Beth K.
A real city kind of dive! NYC, Boston, Philly and now Boise. Fabulous food and entertaining experience. Best Boise food since DesertSage!
(5)Big J.
Been going to Cucina Di Paolo's for a couple of years now. The food is FANTASTIC. You cannot go wrong with any dish they offer. Large selection of desserts too. The place is small and has maybe seating for a dozen or so. THey do have some outside seating when weather permitting. Service is always top notch and Chef Paul is right there where you can see him work his magic. Service is quick enough that you can have a relaxing lunch and still make it back to the office in under an hour. The food. It is just damn good food. I would say the best in Boise. Especially for the price you just can't beat it. I would recommend the three sausage fetticinni. Chef Paul has the sausages for this dish made especially for him locally to his specifications so you will not find them anywhere else. Another recommendation is the Chicken Fiore. If you still have an empty space in your tummy after the fabulous main dish you should check out the desserts. I am not much of a bread pudding fan but the bread pudding here is really really good. They have a brisk take out business too. I have picked up lasagna to go. Just call before you leave the office they will have it ready for you to take home when you get there.
(5)Andrew E.
I love this place. It is top notch food from a legit chef for a great price, about $10/entree.
(5)James W.
FIrst time eating at this restaraunt. We loved it. The food is so full of flavor and the service was great. In fact we came back 2 days later for lunch.
(5)Regina D.
Wonderful food and friendly owners!!! I felt like I was at home!!
(5)Dani S.
Absolutely amazing! The service was great, the food was even better and this little family owned gem should be frequented by everyone! Watch out for the dessert case. You'll end up taking more than one home! Homemade goodness!
(5)Jason P.
Great Place, Great people, and Great Food. I ate here because all the positive reviews. It's well worth the trip and wait for a table. Believe all the other good reviews. Be warned its a very small dinning area.
(5)Todd P.
Wow. My new favorite place in Boise. A small " mom and pop" place that started as a "take and bake" as well as catering. Extremely friendly as on my first visit, I ended up talking to both "mom" and "pop" as well as their son. Food was outstanding... Mostly Italian, but also some fish and some sandwiches. Go...you will not be disappointed.
(4)John S.
I just ate at Cicina Di Paolo for the first time...I had the ziti bolognese and it was really good. It came with a side salad and the dressing (Italian) was delicious, don't usually rave about salad dressing but this one was really tasty. I finished with some lemon poppyseed pie which melted in my mouth in the best of ways. The gentleman behind the counter is super friendly and accomodating. I will be back.
(5)Robin S.
This is a local place not a chain and we almost drove by it, it was so small. We went in and the owner told us how it worked and while we struggled to decide what we wanted he answered questions and told us what was in each dish we were interested in. When the food came out it was the best italian I've had since returning from Italy. If your expecting a Ragu or Prego type red sauce you will be disappointed. Authentic italian sauce is more of a pink sauce, rich and tasty. They have everything from soup and sandwiches to full blown meals. Or if you want take a pan of lasagna your guest will never know the difference. His wife makes the desserts and a mean Strawberry Rhubarb pie.
(5)Ed G.
A local treasure. Ditto to all the other 5 star reviews. Don't miss this place!
(5)Kathleen S.
I just dropped into this place by chance for lunch and am so glad that I did! This is a small cafe with great food and nice people. The wild mushroom ragu was super delicious! The rest of my lunch was also tasty and the desserts I shared were fantastic. I will be returning next time I visit Boise! It looks like they do a fair amount of take-out business as well.
(5)eric j.
This place rocks! Just stopped by tonight and owner Paul and Mary Jean recommended a linguine with bolognese sauce, to go. Food was incredible, flavorful, fresh and hearty. Almost out the door for under $10 when Mary Jean tempted me with a chicken pot pie (house specialty) for an extra $5!
